STEAM Learning Case Study Discover STEM Academy Grimm and Parker Architects Newport News, Virginia | 2016
Project Highlights • 97,600 sf, 850 students, New Construction • Extensive indoor and outdoor collaborative learning spaces • Holistic learning experience Awards • Best Design Award, New Elementary School, Virginia Chapter of Association for Learning Environments (VA4LE) • Grand Prize Award, Learning By Design Magazine • Silver Design Award, Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Exhibition of School Architecture Located in a low-rise, urban area, the new Discovery STEM Academy will replace the existing primary school on the same site. Through a collaborative design approach with the client, the new academy encourages learning everywhere and facilitates student-driven, realworld, project-based learning. Today’s learners must constantly be challenged to become innovative, adaptable and collaborative. Opportunities are provided to allow students to learn how, when, and where they work best, from individual reading nooks in the Nutrition Lab to I-Wonder Walls where students can write a question or engage in online research.
The academy approaches teaching and learning as a holistic experience, educating not only the mind, but the body and spirit as well. The four main aspects of learning at the school are Leadership, Nutrition, Fitness, and Discovery. By training all four aspects of learning in unison, the student can see the synergy between them, marking connections that foster a greater educational experience. The four elements of the holistic student are represented in the organization of the building’s floor plan. The main corridor, dubbed “Learning Lane,” provides displays and places of inquiry to nurture impromptu learning. Open laboratories such as the FoodLab, EcoLab, and FitLab allow the students to explore, hypothesize, and experiment in dynamic spaces. Formal and informal learning spaces are provided throughout the entire building and campus to provide a variety of areas where students can collaborate in small groups, participate in peer-to-peer learning, or engage in individual discovery. The Collaborative Learning Zones located at the center of each classroom cluster, the Central Learning Commons, the Outdoor Learning Classroom, and the Outdoor Amphitheater with edible gardens provide unique learning environments for student groups of all sizes. Public and circulation spaces are expensive to build and maintain over time. They have potential to be utilized as valuable learning zones. Work can be displayed to inspire other students, or the space can be used as an extension of the classroom.

A student’s entry on his/her first day can be made less intimidating if there are clear directional elements (signs or maps) to help him/her get to where he/she needs to go and elements to help isolate certain age groups or subjects from others. Consider assigning a color or theme to different areas as a tool of differentiation or consider other wayfinding techniques.

Design Mentorship | Global Architecture for Children Architecture for Children was created as a diverse volunteer program with the purpose of educating future leaders in New York and Hong Kong in topics of: geometry, environmental problems, science, history, creative thinking, and model building. These valuable lessons are taught through collaboration and experimentation to build from initial lessons of structure and design to complex systems of high-rise sustainably-powered towers. This program is supported by La Salle Primary School in Hong Kong and Pratt Institute in New York. Relationships between universities and schools can be formative in showing children the very realistic possibility of high education and developing job opportunities in a diverse range of fields. Relationships with international schools can create powerful cross-cultural connections helping students negotiate social, cultural, and linguistic differences. GOULDTURNER Architecture . Planing . Design Mentorship | Nashville Girls Who Build Girls Who Build! is a Nashville summer camp that works to expose 12 girls to the opportunities of the construction field. Many in the field only learned of the potentials of the field through the encouragement from a friend or friend of a friend. The traditional male-dominated industry typically intimidates and discourages prospective females who lack the encouragement of a female mentor. This movement works to educate young females on the very real opportunities that are available in this field for them by exposing them to the process of construction with the training of power tools, guest lectures, job site tours, and the crafting of a concrete cast lamp as a keep sake and reminder. This opportunity exposes many females to a field previously believed to be too exclusive to join.

Design Mentorship | Nashville Nashville Civic Design Center Nashville Civic Design Center has been shaping the fabric of Nashville and Middle Tennessee since the early 1990s when the Urban Design Forum was founded. It focuses on conducting design charretts to involve the communities in the planning and development of the urban fabric of the city. They focus on translating the concerns and desires of the residents and the longterm needs of the city into plans for the future. They work to educate the public through presentations on issues of civic design, consult on community design development projects, facilitate public dialogues, and conduct civic research and planning. This institution can serve as a valueable teaching resource to expose students to the civic design and community issues.

Design Mentorship | Nashville ACE Mentorship ACE is a local mentorship program that connects professionals in architecture, construction, and engineering to high schoolers who are interested in those fields. These relationships allow for students to better understand possible futures in those respective fields. Connecting students with professions gives students connections to the field for advice about higher education, job or internship opportunities, long term mentorship, or specialized advice beyond what a parent, teacher, or career/college councilor could provide. Activities throughout the program give the students experiences and resume builders that can help steer their career aspirations and provide a deeper understanding of the fields. ACE also awards multiple scholarships every year to college bound seniors.

Resources Design Competitions as a Lesson Competitions are lesson activity opportunities that can be enhanced by the instructor before and after the competition. Lectures can provide the tools and information to complete and analyze the activity, and teamwork can enhance the learning experience. Design Competitions are an invaluable teaching tool for STEAM classes. Competitions whether STEM, STEAM, Robotics, ect are opportunities for students to take a given problem and work through it with the existing parameters of the competition with the opportunity to validate their creation through the competition judging process.

Resources Lesson Plan: Urban Planning CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE FOUNDATION: URBAN DESIGN LESSON PLANS ‘No Small Plans’ This graphic novel follows characters in Chicago as they wrestle with designing the city they want, need, and deserve.
Each chapter explores the urban design problems of a different era: past (1928), present (2017), and future (2211). Character profiles for each chapter show the changing demographics of the city representing the prevalent cultural and social issues of the time creating a relatable connection between the reader and characters as both learn about the difficulties of urban design. There are vocabulary lists, zoning activities, discussion questions, maps, and contacts for community contacts for Chicago.

Chapter 1: The Past In 1928, at the height of the construction boom following the 1909 Plan of Chicago, characters struggle with contradictions of racial and class discrimination in public space. Chapter 2: The Present In 2017, characters deal with issues of zoning, fair housing, gentrification, and displacement/eviction through Chicago’s history of development and organized resistance as they work toward change in the community. Chapter 3: The Future In the year 2211, characters struggle making decisions that will affect a neighborhood in which none of them live in a geographically segregated Chicago with virtual reality as the primary bridge for staying connected between neighborhoods.
