LIFE’S CHANCE by Andrea Hui
• Why can’t I have a chance? Why do I have to end up in jail? You see, I lost my mind and broke into an extremely famous jewelry store...but I was desperate! My family was starving, and I needed to provide food for them or they would die.
•
Oh, how rude of me, I forgot to introduce myself! Well, my name is Rob, Rob Chance. I used to think that my last name had a meaning… Chance - a meaningful nickname as well… but I don’t think it has a meaning now…or has it ever had a meaning?
Anyway, where was I before my selfintroduction? Ah! Yes, I was so stupid, horribly stupid! How could I just run into a jewelry store and steal jewelry without even noticing the police who were waiting for me outside?
" So there I was, stuck in a jail cell with a pen and some paper, waiting for my execution and feeling so hopeless. I was just terrified in the darkness and loneliness. What I was trying to say is...I just want to escape from this HORRIBLE STINKY PLACE!!! I just wish I had a CHANCE to change. I did not think I would have one though. My execution was just two days away from then. I had to hurry for coming up with a plan to escape.
Out of the blue, I heard a familiar voice outside the sturdy iron bars in the dim light.  This person also looked strangely familiar to me. As the person walked closer and closer, I noticed that the lady was wearing a police uniform and holding some keys and a crumpled paper bag. As the light passed over her face, I could make out her brown hair streaked with orange tints, a pointy nose, body as skinny as a stick, two long legs, shoes with a metal tips‌ I couldn’t believe it- it was Molly! She had come to save me! Molly was one of my best buddies since childhood and was a very kind person who always gave people hopes and chances. I thought about how she somehow tricked the police and managed to get in here! Molly unlocked the black iron bars, handed me another police uniform, and pointed straight down the hall at the bathroom door and motioned me to be quiet.
“How do you know I am in jail?” I puzzled. " “Your mother told me. I just tried to save my best friend!” Molly whispered. But, I grinned ear to ear, shouting out too happily and too unconsciously, “Thank you!!! You are like lady Robinhood!”. That moment, a police looked around, “ HANDS UP!!! I CAUGHT YOU THIS TIME! YOU, GIRL, GET OUTTA HERE! YOU, PRISONER, GO BACK TO YOUR LITTLE DEN! YOU HAVE NO REASON TO LEAVE!”
That moment, Molly whispered something in my ear that I didn’t really understand...well it doesn’t matter now… All was lost, and I was back to my “Little Den”. I had lost hope...again! Everything became dark.
The sound of some keys banging on the bars startled me awake. It was five in the morning, who would be visit me??? I opened my eyes slowly and imagined for a moment that everything was just a dream! I was in my comfy… hard… bed...huh? But nope, I was STILL IN JAIL!?! Oh come on! In the dark spooky jail, I saw again a skinny figure approaching me quietly. “Is it you Molly?” I questioned myself as I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes to make the blurred vision get clearer. "
“Yes, it is.” Molly my friend said calmly.
" “Are you here to help me escape? How could you manage to come back? You should have left me behind if you have a chance and leave, silly!” " “If I am silly, how could I escape and return for you” she said with a smile. “You should remember that I am skinny but powerful. I just smashed the police who caught us and threw him into another cell!”

She positioned her finger to aim directly at the mens bathroom and handed me the uniform and motioned for me to be quiet once again. After fitting into the guard uniform, I managed to keep quiet as I crept into the lavatory, slowly and steadily, to avoid making any noise. Molly was following me. Then I realized something. When she whispered in my ear last time, she was actually telling me she would return for me.

There was another exit in the bathroom that led to the hallway and then back-door of the jail. We dashed down the hallway after my disposing of the prisoner uniform. Molly and I pretended to be the guards on watch all the way. To tell the truth, we were actually shaking to the bones. It seems that we disguised ourselves perfectly. We got passed the guards safely. At that moment on, I vowed to Molly that I would take this chance to make a new life for myself. I would not be committing crimes again even though there were great difficulties in living. I should treasure this CHANCE to live all over again!
Throughout the night of escape, Molly and I hurried to leave the city with my family by the boat arranged by Molly. We finally left the country peacefully. My family were so grateful for this friend Molly who just came so suddenly for rescuing and changing my life. We kissed Molly farewell with respects. We managed to find a quiet farmland in another country. In order to stay away from being caught again, I have to reluctantly change my family name, CHANCE. Guess what my new family name is? NEW it is. I am Rob NEW. Oh, wait a minute. I should never call myself Rob again. How about a name called Chance NEW!
