*CARACTERISTICS *PROS AND CONS OF CABLE-STAYED BRIDGES *COMPRESSION AND TENSION *RIO-ANTIRRIO BRIDGE *CONSTRUCTION OF THE RIO-ANTIRRIO BRIDGE

* The first modern cable-stayed bridge was completed in Sweden in 1956. * This bridge’s desing and success were made possible as new material construccion techniques were developed.

* Cable-stayed bridges have one or more towers, each of which anchors a set.

and

PROS: *Spans medium distance (500-2.800 feet). *It is less expensive and faster to build. CONS: *They are the most typical type of bridges, except for suspension bridges.

COMPRESSION:

*As

traffic pushes down on the roadway, the cables, to which the roadway is attached, transfer the load to the towers.

TENSION:

*The

force of tension is constantly acting on the cable, which are stretched because they are attatched to the roadway.

*The

Rio–Antirrio bridge is one of the world's longest multispan cable-stayed bridges and the longest of the fully suspended type.

*This bridge is located in Greece. *Its total lenght is 2.880 meters (9.450 feet) *Its width is 27,2 meters (89 feet) *Its official name is the Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge. *Charilaos Trikoupis was a 19th-century Greek prime
