LAB EXPERIMENT: DENSITY OF IRREGULAR OBJECTS 1. Purpose/Aim To determine the density of an irregular object (a solid material) using a measuring cylinder. 2. Background to Experiment The experimental task is to determine the density of an irregular solid object. Since the volume of an irregular object cannot be determined directly we use indirect means by employing a measuring cylinder method (displacement method). 3. Density Density is regarded as the degree of compactness of a material or substance. If a body is very compact, it has a higher density and when less compact, it has a lower density. Density, ρ can be defined as:



m v

4. Equipment/ Materials/Apparatus    

measuring cylinder lever balance water three irregular objects which do not dissolve in water and whose density is to be determined.

5. Procedure (1) Find and record the mass, m, of the object. (2) Add water into the measuring cylinder about a third of its depth (3) Record volume V1, of water in cylinder (4) Lower solid gently into liquid, avoiding splashing (5) Record volume V2, of the water plus solid (6) Empty the contents of the cylinder

6. Results and calculations Tabulate your results as shown Table 1 . Objects

Mass (g)

V1(cm3)

Therefore average value of (V2 – V1) cm3=‌.. cm3 The density of the irregular object can be calculated. 7. Conclusion The density of the solid 1 is ..................... g/cm3 The density of the solid 2 is ..................... g/cm3 The density of the solid 3 is ..................... g/cm3
