Trabajo, ilusión y confianza Ya

estamos nuevamente en un Campeonato Mundial de Fútbol. El de Brasil, amigo y vecino. Un pueblo que vive, siente y palpita el fútbol con nuestra misma pasión. No tengo dudas: será una fiesta, ofrecida por las 32 selecciones y la multitud de simpatizantes que irán a ver cada partido allá donde juegue su propio equipo. En las canchas y en las calles. Sin descontar aquellos otros que también estarán sin que sus equipos nacionales jueguen. Además, se calcula que unos 2.500 millones de personas, casi la mitad de la población mundial, seguirán el Mundial por televisión, disfrutando la modernidad tecnológica, por todos los nuevos medios que permiten ver los partidos desde cualquier lugar y a través de los más diversos y modernos equipos. Allí estará una vez más, como desde 1974 de manera ininterrumpida, la Selección Argentina de Fútbol, respaldada por la dirigencia de la Asociación del Fútbol Argentino toda. O sea, todos formamos parte de un mismo equipo y respaldamos con esperanza a nuestros jugadores y a nuestro cuerpo técnico. Nuestra aspiración coincide con nuestra historia: ser dignos desde el principio hasta el final. No dudamos de que así será.

Work, hope and trust We

are already back at a Football World Cup. It is the turn of Brazil, friend and neighbor, to host it. Brazilians experience and feel football with throbbing hearts; their passion equals ours. I am convinced that the 32 national teams and a host of fans, who will seek to watch each match their own teams play, will serve up a true feast, both on the pitches and on the streets. I am not leaving out those who will be there, even though their national teams are not playing. In addition, an estimated 2,500 million people, almost half the world population, will follow the World Cup on television – a gift from modern technology. A variety of modern equipment used by the new media will allow supporters to watch the matches from every spot on the planet. Once again, as it has done uninterruptedly since 1974, the Argentine National Football Team will be there, with the backing of the entire leadership of the Argentine Football Association. In other words, we are all members of the same team and we give our hope-filled support to our players and to our technical team. Our wishes are in harmony with our history: to be worthy participants from beginning to end. We are sure it will be so.

Se trataba de un plantel de gran calidad -como después quedó demostrado con el bicampeonato 82/83-, y con la particularidad de tener varios jugadores con potencial para ser directores técnicos en el futuro. relationship with Alejandro Sabella began in 1982, when I was managing Estudiantes de La Plata. This was a top quality squad, as the 1982/83 bi-championship proved, and displayed the peculiar characteristic of having several players who had the makings of future coaches and managers. Desde los años 60, cuando Osvaldo Zubeldía fue un verdadero maestro para mí y para tantos compañeros de ese equipo que llegó a ser campeón del Mundo, se habla de “la escuela de Estudiantes de la Plata”. En el club se conversa mucho de táctica, de técnica, de la importancia de los entrenamientos. Si bien Sabella es de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires y había comenzado en River, enseguida entendió y se acostumbró a la filosofía del club. La mística, su gente, los dirigentes, la capacidad de los técnicos... Como Alejandro es muy inteligente, se acomodó rápido y podemos ver hoy hasta dónde llegó. Para mí fue una satisfacción también haber tenido que ver con su llegada a Estudiantes como técnico, en el año 2009. Yo estaba trabajando en el parte de Deportes de la Provincia de Buenos Aires y se lo recomendé a los dirigentes del club. Por suerte, no me equivoqué. En realidad, estaba designado para dirigir a las divisiones inferiores, pero un problema con los profesionales le abrió la puerta. A partir de ésta situación, el mérito, sin duda, es de Alejandro. Hizo historia con la Copa Libertadores y con el último título local que consiguió el club, en 2010. Cuando al año siguiente Julio Grondona me preguntó cómo lo veía a Sabella para hacerse cargo de la Selección Argentina, le respondí que era una muy buena elección. Más allá de sus éxitos recientes, también era muy importante su experiencia como ayudante de campo de Daniel Passarella entre 1994 y 1998, cuando trabajaron en el Mundial de Francia. A partir de mi responsabilidad como Director de Selecciones Nacionales de la AFA, mi contacto con Alejandro como así también con sus ayudantes Claudio Gugnali y Julián Camino, es muy frecuente. Realmente lo encuentro muy bien, compenetrado en su tarea y dando pasos seguros en la preparación para la Copa del Mundo. Tranquilo como siempre, tomando las decisiones lógicas de su cargo y como buena gente, algo que se nota en su llegada a los jugadores. Los resultados mandan, pero estoy muy confiado en su proyecto. Talk at the club mainly concerned tactical and technical matters and the importance of training. While Sabella was originally from the city of Buenos Aires and had started playing for River, he understood right away and grew used to the philosophy of the club: its mystique, its people, its leaders, the capability of the technical staff… Alejandro is very intelligent and he therefore adjusted quickly; today we can see how far he has come. It was very satisfying for me to have been involved in his becoming part of the technical staff in Estudiantes in 2009. I was working in the area of Sports in the province of Buenos Aires, and I recommended him to the authorities of the club. Fortunately, I made no mistake. In fact, he had been designated to coach the lower divisions, but a problem with the professionals opened the doors to him. From that point on, the credit is undoubtedly his. He made history in the Libertadores Cup and in the last local title obtained by Estudiantes in 2010. The following year, when Julio Grondona asked me what I thought of Sabella as a likely candidate for taking over the Argentine National Team, I replied that it was a very good choice. Beyond his recent successes, his experience as field assistant to Daniel Passarella between 1994 and 1998 when working for the France World Cup was also very important. Because of my responsibility as the AFA Director of National Teams, my contact with Alejandro as well as with his assistants, Claudio Gugnali and Julián Camino, is very frequent. I think he is doing very well: he is quite absorbed in his task and he is taking confident steps in preparation for the World Cup. Serene as ever, he makes the relevant decisions expected from his position and because he is the kind of person he is, Alejandro clearly gets through to his players. Results have the last word, but I wholeheartedly trust his project. Let us look forward to celebrating a new title and to contributing to the joy of the Argentine football community.

El nuevo ámbito donde funcionará la AFA se emplaza delante del destinado a Selecciones Nacionales. Proyectado como un edificio inteligente, su inauguración se estima hacia fines del año 2015. 4 Los jugadores de las Selecciones Sub 15, Sub 17, Sub 18 y Sub 20 cuentan con un gimnasio instalado con maquinas e infraestructura para el entrenamiento y la recuperación física. The players of the U-15, U-17, U-18 and U-20 have a fully outfitted gymnasium with the adequate machines and infrastructure for training and physical recovery.

El Complejo Número 1 alberga a las Selecciones Juveniles y cuenta con 16 habitaciones, gimnasio, dos utilerías, sala de juegos y esparcimiento y sala de conferencias. Complex No 1 hosts the Youth National Teams and has 16 rooms, a gymnasium, two kit-rooms, recreation and games room and conference room.

4 Un entrenamiento de las Selecciones Juveniles. Desde los comienzos de su carrera, los jugadores sienten en Ezeiza la pertenencia a la Selección Argentina. A training session of the Youth National Teams: from their early beginnings, E zeiza gives the players a sense of belonging to the Argentina National Team.

La utilería del Complejo 1 se encuentra al lado del vestuario de las Selecciones Juveniles. The kit-room of Complex No 1 is next to the Youth National Teams changing-room.

Las piletas de agua fría (menos de 10 grados) y de agua caliente (entre 35 y 36 grados) son el complemento ideal para la recuperación y relajación de los juveniles. The cold water (-10° C) and warm water (between 35 ° C and 36° C) pools are the ideal complement for the recovery and relaxation of the youth players.

El piso de parqué, similar al que se utiliza en los estadios de las mejores ligas de Futsal del mundo, permite entrenar a las selecciones masculinas y femeninas mayores, Sub 20 y Sub 17. The wooden floor, similar to that used in the stadiums of the best Futsal leagues in the world, allows the senior men’s and women’s, the U-20 and the U-17 teams to train.

Ubicado entre el complejo 2 y la cancha de césped sintético, el quincho se utiliza continuamente para reuniones dirigenciales y agasajos a los futbolistas. Located between Complex No 2 and the synthetic grass pitch, the covered barbecue area is continually used for executive meetings and for entertaining the footballers.

Además de estar equipada con lo necesario para todos los comensales, la cocina cuenta con un horno industrial, cámara de frío y freezer. Besides being equipped with everything the guests might need, the barbecue area kitchen has an industrial oven, cold storage chamber and freezer.

Dos parrillas con capacidad para 10 kilos de carne flanquean el comedor y dan un estilo campestre al quincho. Two grills that can hold 10 kg of meat each flank the dining room and provide rustic atmosphere to the barbecue area.

En el ala derecha del edificio se encuentra la habitación del entrenador de la Selección Mayor, equipada con las mismas comodidades que las de los jugadores y un escritorio de trabajo. The room allotted to the Head Coach of the senior National Team is in the right wing of the building, is similar to the players’ rooms and has a work desk in addition.

Una de las 18 habitaciones del complejo 2, con espacio para dos personas: cuentan con calefacción central, TV por cable, baño privado, wifi y sommier king size. Junto a la utilería se encuentra la zona húmeda, que consta de una pileta de agua fría, otra a temperatura ambiente y un jacuzzi. Footballers can relax their muscles in this area, after their demanding training sessions.

Dotado de aparatos de última generación, el gimnasio ofrece múltiples opciones para el entrenamiento físico y la recuperación. Equipped with state-of-the-art machines, the gymnasium offers multiple options for physical training and recovery from injuries.

El complejo 2 también cuenta con un espacio de recreación y esparcimiento. Cuenta con una mesa de ping pong, metegol, PC con Internet, señal wifi y amplios sillones. Complex No 2 also has a space for recreation and relaxation. It offers tables for ping-pong and table-football, PCs with Internet, Wi-Fi and comfortable armchairs.

En el primer piso del Edificio de Selecciones Nacionales se encuentra el depósito de videos, donde almacenan 4.158 DVD y 16.234 VHS, sumando en total 40.784 horas de grabación de partidos completos, compactos y seguimiento a jugadores. Mario Distéfano, Juan Cruz Souto y Maximiliano Ledesma son los encargados de la utilería de la Selección Mayor en Brasil. Ante cada viaje transportan más de 40 bolsos y baúles con indumentaria deportiva, de tiempo libre, accesorios para el entrenamiento y medicación e instrumental médico. Mario Distéfano, Juan Cruz Souto and Maximiliano Ledesma are in charge of the equipment kits of the senior National Team in Brazil. Before each trip, they arrange transportation for more than 40 sports bags and trunks with sport and casual free-time gear and training accessories, in addition to medical supplies.

Walter Arditto está a cargo del depósito de indumentaria de Selecciones, y administra cerca de 5.000 cajas con ropa oficial. Walter Arditto is in charge of the storage room for the National teams’ sports gear and he manages almost 5,000 boxes of official clothing. El comedor tiene capacidad para más de 100 comensales y brinda el servicio de desayuno, almuerzo, merienda y cena durante la concentración de la selección mayor. The dining room sits over 100 people and offers breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack and dinner during the training camp period of the senior National Team.

El vestuario del Complejo Número 2 cuenta con lockers para cada jugador, donde se les brinda la ropa del entrenamiento y una muda de ropa para que utilicen luego del trabajo. The Complex No 2 changing room has individual lockers for each player, where they find training clothes and a change of clothing for wearing after their preparatory work.

En la Sala de Conferencias entran 70 personas sentadas. Allí se ofrecen conferencias de prensa, reuniones de directivos y cursos Future III de la FIFA. The Press Room accommodates 70 seated people. Press conferences, board meetings and FIFA Future III courses take place in this area.

Durante su gestión, la Selección Argentina se convirtió en un equipo de elite mundial y el fútbol multiplicó sus actividades y recursos en todo el país. Un repaso de sus principales hitos y su relevancia como dirigente mundial.

35 years of visionary work The president of the Argentine Football Association faces his ninth consecutive World Cup. During his administration, the Argentine National Team became a team of world elite category and football multiplied its activities and resources in the whole country. We will now review his main landmarks and his relevance as world football executive.

Visión “La gente quiere que la AFA sea manejada por personas relacionadas con un club de fútbol. Estamos en período experimental; queremos demostrar que el fútbol no está tan bajo. En 2004, ante el firme interés de la Real Federación Española de nacionalizar a Messi, Julio Grondona intensificó las gestiones para que el futbolista integrase la Selección Argentina. Actualmente capitán del equipo, fue elegido el Mejor Jugador del Mundo entre 2010 y 2013.

Trayectoria, sueños y responsabilidades de los árbitros que impartirán justicia en la cita máxima del fútbol y en el evento más trascendental de sus carreras.

Ellos son Néstor Pitana, Hernán Maidana y Juan Pablo Belatti, quienes se entrenaron duro y rindieron exámenes semanales durante dos años para estar del 12 de junio al 13 de julio en la elite del fútbol mundial. Durante la recta final de preparación entrenaron semanalmente en el Complejo Habitacional y Deportivo Ezeiza junto a un equipo armado especialmente para pulir los detalles finales y hacerlos llegar a Río de Janeiro en óptimas condiciones. Allí cumplieron exigentes trabajos físicos y técnicos, vinculados con la ubicación, la rapidez en la toma de decisiones y la generación de la conciencia de equipo. Estuvieron supervisados por Abel Gnecco, Miembro de la Comisión Arbitral de la CONMEBOL; y los instructores FIFA Juan Carlos Crespi y Ricardo Casas, además de un equipo multidisciplinario que siguió de cerca el desempeño de la terna durante estos años y colaboró en la preparación final de cara a la cita máxima. “Es un verdadero orgullo estar entre los pocos árbitros que tienen la fortuna de participar de un Mundial. Además, en mi caso, seré el primer representante del interior del país en un evento de tal magnitud y relevancia”, expresó Néstor Pitana tras su designación. Además, el árbitro nacido en Corpus, provincia de Misiones, hace casi 39 años, comentó: “Me siento plenamente capacitado y confío en mis asistentes, por lo que tengo la absoluta certeza de que cumpliremos un buen desempeño y estaremos a la altura de las circunstancias”. Junto a él, los árbitros asistentes vivirán situaciones opuestas y comunes a la vez, ya que tanto Hernán Maidana -nacido hace 42 años en General Pinto, Pcia. de Buenos Aires-, y Juan Pablo Belatti, de Saladillo y y con 35 años de edad- tendrán el privilegio de vivir un Mundial en representación del arbitraje argentino. Fue durante la presidencia del Dr. Raúl Alfonsín, pero es bueno aclarar que el mandatario jamás participó de esta locura, a la que sí se adhirió gran parte de la prensa que no quería a Bilardo -tan poderosa antes como en la actualidad-, algunos políticos de poca trascendencia histórica y algunos empresarios vinculados con los intereses del sponsoreo de la Selección más, obviamente, una porción de la “ familia técnica” del fútbol argentino, partidarios de una manera opuesta a la doctrina Bilardo. Es allí, frente a tanta presión política, mediática y social que aparece la figura del Presidente de la AFA, Julio Humberto Grondona, para respaldar irrestrictamente a Bilardo y marchar junto a él y, solidariamente, hacia el difícil desafío de la Copa del Mundo en México 86. Para Bilardo, México e Italia no fueron otra cosa que el fruto de sus convicciones. Y de su incesante, permanente, minuciosa, constante, pormenorizada y febril manera de trabajar que en realidad es -como dijimos- su manera de vivir.

These were the Sports Secretary of Argentina as well as his second in command, the Undersecretary, both of whom had spasmodically tried to launch an operation to remove Bilardo from his position and appoint one of the coaches currently and openly active in the local tournament in his place. This happened less than two months before travelling to Mexico, with a stopover in Barranquilla, Colombia to play what was to be the last friendly match. It was during Dr. Raúl Alfonsín’s presidency, but it is only fair to point out that the head of state was never part of this insanity, to which a large section of the press – as powerful then as it is today – that disliked Bilardo adhered, together with a few historically inconsequential politicians and some businesspeople linked to interests in sponsoring the national team and lastly, a part of the “technical family” of Argentine football, who were against the Bilardo doctrine. At that point, in the face of so much political, media and social pressure, Julio Humberto Grondona, President of the AFA, appeared to back Bilardo unconditionally and to stay at his side all the way to the challenging ’86 Mexico World Cup in a gesture of solidarity. For Bilardo, Mexico and Italy were nothing but the fruit of his convictions and his incessant, detailed, constant, and feverish way of working, which is precisely, as we have already said, the way he chooses to live.

El equipo nacional obtuvo claros triunfos ante Francia, México, Chile y Estados Unidos, para llegar a una nueva final frente a los uruguayos. Nadie quería perderse el partido y cuentan las crónicas que cerca de 30.000 personas partieron desde Buenos Aires. La Selección ganaba por 2-1 al terminar el primer tiempo, jugado con una pelota argentina, pero los locales consiguieron imponer la atmósfera y las condiciones del partido, para finalmente darlo vuelta con lo que entonces pasó a conocerse como “garra charrúa”.

Un recuerdo emotivo en sepia, en tiempos de amateurismo, donde danzan los nombres siempre jóvenes de Francisco Varallo (gloria que vivió 100 años), Stábile, Juan y Mario Evaristo, Scopelli, Peucelle y Monti. Los olímpicos de 1924 y 1928 conformaron una base que, al igual que en los Juegos, vivió a la sombra de Uruguay, la potencia de entonces.

The national team obtained clear victories over France, Mexico, Chile and United States and reached a new final with the Uruguayans. Nobody wanted to miss the match, and the story goes that almost 30,000 people left from Buenos Aires. The National Team was winning 2-1 at the end of the first half, played with an Argentine ball, but the local team managed to impose the atmosphere and the conditions of the match and finally turned it round. To do so they applied what we know as garra charrúa or, in other words, the valor, pride and spirit of the native population of Uruguay. x

The forever-young names of Francisco Varallo (who lived to a glorious 100 years), Stábile, Juan and Mario Evaristo, Scopelli, Peucelle and Monti dance on a moving sepia-tinted memory of the times when the sport was amateur. The 1924 and 1928 Olympians formed the base of the team that, just like in the Games, lived in the shadow of Uruguay, the most powerful squad at that time.

Guillermo Stábile. Con ocho tantos, fue el goleador de la primera Copa del Mundo, Uruguay 1930, en la que fue subcampeón. Como entrenador de la Selección Argentina, fue campeón sudamericano en siete oportunidades.

CAMPEÓN MUNDIAL ARGENTINA 78 Para acceder a la final, Argentina estaba obligada a marcarle cuatro goles a Perú. Luego de un par de sustos -remate de Oblitas en el palo de Fillol-, el equipo fue una tromba y accedió al partido decisivo con un 6-0 espectacular.

El capitán Daniel Passarella le ofrece la Copa del Mundo al público que llenó el Estadio Monumental y vibró en todo el país.

Aquel domingo 25 de junio de 1978, el país se paralizó. Fue una final dramática, con Kempes en su hora más gloriosa, un equipo holandés que nunca se rindió y hasta estuvo por ganar, y en la que el equipo expuso su verdadera estirpe de campeón.

En un plantel con talentosos como Alonso, Villa y Valencia, el director técnico Menotti tomó la decisión de dejar a Diego Armando Maradona, de 17 años, fuera del plantel para disputar la Copa.
