The Brief Establish a 3000 word essay and a practical to support it. We need to establish and create a 3000 word essay as well as producing a practical that will help benefit the essay. We need to come up with a question of our own choice and then work on it whilst going to lectures and seminars.

Research Existing posters

Looking at propaganda posters

For my research on my practical a lot of it was based on May 1968 posters. I wanted to create a similar minimalistic rebellion poster that would have a similar meaning.

Although I am doing my poster on rebellion I decided to look at propaganda posters because they were used especially to grab your attention and convince you to join the army.

May 14th. Started to make revolutionary images around France for the people in university. The student were standing up for what they believed in. Students Visually communicated a revolution. Catalysed by student action at the Sorbonne, which were occupied and declared as an autonomous people’s university “open day and night, at all times, to all workers”. This revolution led to the french saying ‘Egalite! Liberte! Sexualite’. The students rebelled for education for everyone as well as student wages.

Looking at Uncle Sams ‘I want you for U.S Army’ it is the typography of the word YOU that caught my attention. By using the word ‘you’ you are directing it to someone. Therefore by Uncle Sam pointing at you with the word ‘You’ you are already the centre of attention. Almost making you want to join the army.

Although this is has a similar resemblence to the Uncle Sam poster. This is a parody poster that uses Star Wars to promote you to join the alliance I believe it is still a very strong use of image and text. Instead of pointing directly at you the woman curls her hand to show power in her posture. The words coming out of her mouth saying ‘we can do it!’ shows unity and makes you believe it. Although this poster is a mimic of Star Wars I believe it is an inviting poster and shows unity. I intend to use strong typography throughout my practical to create a bond with the viewer making him stop to read and understand the poster.

Initial Ideas Mindmap I really struggled to come up with various concepts. I am aware that I shouldn’t always follow your first idea however, I really wanted to create a set of posters which related back to the May 1968 rebellion because that is what brought me to start this essay. I really wanted to focus on the word rebellion and creating something that is going to relate back to the May 1968 posters. I wanted to keep it simplistic and effective. I don’t want to overcomplicate the posters as they need to be eye catching and rebellious. I decided to start my drawing up a mind map to help me further my practical however, after disputing it with my peers I have been advised to take on the series of posters that would relate back to the May 1968 posters. I intend to create a poster that will communicate a message of rebellion that will help contribute towards the essay. I want my essay to be linked directly with my posters. I have also experimented with the way that my poster could beinteractive too. I decided to colour in the man and cut him out so it looks like he is being hung by technology.

Development Developing the posters At first I really struggled with the development of my work. I couldn’t find a statement in French that worked well with the images behind. I also wanted to keep all my poster designs minimalistic and sticking to 2 colours. I also decided from the start of my practical that my final outcome would be highlight the colour green because throughout my essay I mention that consumers want to ‘go green’ and be more environmentally friendly. Therefore I wanted to create a poster that would be influenced by the May 1968 posters as well as linking something subtle in my practical to my essay. After struggling a lot on my designs I decided to take forward my ‘Finir avec la technologie’. For me it was the most simplistic and the one that could be developed even further to make it look even more like a 1968 poster.

Final Outcome Final poster designs. Here is a digital version and screenprinted version of my final outcome. I was very satisfied with my final outcomes as they look very simplistic but portray a powerful message using typography. I wanted the posters to be look similar to a May 1968 poster and I believe I achieved that. The posters are eye catching and remind me of rebellion. I decided to keep the colour green because it related back to my essay and worked very well with the various different stock that I decided to use. This poster was created so that when people look up the translation on the internet it would come up with ‘Finish with technology’ and ironically they would of probably used some sort of technology to translate it.

Digital Version

To conclude I am very satisfied with my final outcomes however, in the future I hope to experiment more with laser cutting and wood blocks.
