Our purpose is to improve lives. I grew up in the South during a time that wasn’t so inclusive. From the age of seven, I was made aware I was different from other people. But I had as much to offer as anyone else, and I was going to figure out a way I could contribute.

At Lilly, our purpose is to improve the lives of our patients — which, by their very nature are diverse. A diverse workforce helps us deliver on that. Plus, an inclusive environment fuels creativity, which, in turn, drives innovation. And innovation benefits our patients. It makes absolute business sense.

My father worked for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. At the dinner table, he’d talk about his work and about the people who were trying to drive change. So I look at my work as a natural extension of his.

It’s my job to cultivate diversity here at Lilly. I get to work with very smart people and we all have the opportunity to help deliver life-changing, life-saving medicines to patients. It’s a noble task. And I don’t take it for granted. lilly.com

In an effort to effectively prepare undergraduate students with a solid and stable understanding of credit card abuse, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. has partnered with the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees, National Foundation of Credit Counselors, and the Council of Presidents on behalf of the National Pan-Hellenic Council to actively promote the Credit Abuse Resistance Education Program (CARE) and a new college financial literacy program called Greeks Learning to Avoid Debt (GLAD).

The Sprite Step Off Service Challenge was a national program designed to spark individuals and organizations nationwide to refresh their communities by donating a collective 1.5 million hours of youth-focused volunteerism and service. The Sprite Step Off is only open to students in undergraduate chapters of fraternities and sororities. The $1.5 million prize pool is the largest ever awarded during a step tournament.

The 50 Million Pound Challenge is an amazing way for the African-American community to unite and overcome the vastly growing health crisis of obesity. Headed by Dr. Ian Smith, known for his Fat Smash Diet and role on Celebrity Fit Club, and partnered by State Farm Insurance, The 50 Million Pound Challenge’s goal is to bring African-Americans together to collectively lose 50 million pounds during the next two years. To date, Dr. Ian’s fight against obesity has helped people lose more than 1.1 million pounds- and the number just keeps rising. 10

WHO WE ARE

The Benefits of Membership Why were the Divine Nine Organizations founded? First and foremost, it is important for you to understand why these organizations exist. During the time in which the first Divine Nine Organization was established, African Americans across the country were faced with the harsh realities of race-related discrimination. Repercussions from slavery were well saturated in the fabric of the American culture, and due to situations resulting from these discriminatory practices, various organizations established by the African American community began to surface and some of them were Black Greek Letter Organizations. Since 1906—the founding year of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.—nine fraternities and sororities (affectionately known as the Divine Nine) have had the privilege of developing and establishing chapters throughout the United States and the world. These organizations provided a common ground for a common purpose. The establishment of these brotherhoods and sisterhoods brought together men and women who were passionate about the goals and ideals of their organization and made a commitment to work together to make a difference in the world in which they lived. What is the purpose of these organizations? If you were to research the initiatives of each Black Greek Letter Organization, you would discover programs ranging from voter registration drives and economic empowerment programs to campus clean-up initiatives and beyond. Underneath the surface of most nationally recognized activities implemented by these organizations lies the desire to enhance the local and international community. Community service plays a significant role in the foundation of all Divine Nine Organizations. For example, the first public service initiative completed by the newly founded Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was the 1913 Women’s Suffrage March in Washington, DC. Members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. also showed a unique interest in women’s rights during the early stages of their organization’s existence. Early interests of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., founded in 1914, also heavily focused on the enhancement of the world in which we live. Their interests included anti-lynching laws and international issues occurring in the Republic of Haiti. As you can see, the scope of these organizations does not solely lie on each respective college or university campus, and their impact is evident worldwide. The Benefits of Divine Nine Membership The group of friends you’ll find in black sororities and fraternities is just one of the benefits of Divine Nine life. Here are the primary benefits: • Career networking. Sharing similar career interests within a social organization means you have an automatic list of contacts potentially willing to share and support your dreams. 16

• Charitable opportunities. Because fraternity and sorority members are required to complete a certain level of charitable work yearly, you’ll have an automatic outlet to give back to your community. • Leadership training. Greek organizations typically put a large emphasis on leadership positions, giving you a chance to prove your management ability to potential employers. Lifelong friendships and community building experience are just a few of the benefits of joining a black fraternity or sorority. By reading this article, it shows that either you or someone you know is interested not only in Black Greek Letter Organizations but also in learning more about attending college. Just by attending college, you will have the world at your disposal. There are so many opportunities that can arise from just stepping foot into a classroom. Imagine the experiences and knowledge that each person brings with them and consider the opportunities that lie before each student after graduation. The benefits of joining a Divine Nine Organization are endless. For many, one of the greatest benefits is the opportunity to network. Networking is essential in today’s society. Now consider being a member of a Divine Nine Organization. All Divine Nine Organizations have at least 100,000 members worldwide. Instantly, that classroom of 25 grows. Membership provides a common bond not only among fraternity brothers or sorors, but also within the Greek community as a whole. Even more important than networking is having the ability to serve your community in the name of your organization. There is power in numbers, and when the world has the opportunity to witness a group of individuals working together for the common good of the community, more and more people will want to become involved. This is one reason that the legacies of Black Greek Organizations have continued over so many years. There is also a social advantage to becoming a member of a Black Greek organization. You may have heard that the most important thing to get out of your college experience is a quality education. However, you should also take time to enjoy yourself. Becoming involved in organizations on campus can help you to gain a greater sense of ownership of your college or university. If you think Greek life may be something you are interested in, check it out. You may cherish your experiences in the organization for the rest of your life. For more information, we suggest that you do your homework and conduct research.

Julia May Carson (July 8, 1938 – December 15, 2007), was a member of the United States House of Representatives for Indiana’s 7th congressional district from 1997 until her death in 2007. Carson was the first woman and first African American to represent the 7th District. She was also the second African American woman elected to Congress from Indiana, after Katie Hall. Carson was born in Louisville, Kentucky. She moved to Indianapolis while still a girl. She graduated from Crispus Attucks High School in 1955 in Indianapolis. She then attended Martin University in Indianapolis and Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis. She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. In 1990 she was elected as a trustee for Center Township, and was responsible for running welfare in central Indianapolis. When Jacobs retired in 1996, Carson ran as his replacement in what was then the 10th District, and won. Some of her other Congressional accomplishments included critical funding to revitalize the Fall Creek Neighborhood and the new terminal for the Indianapolis International Airport. She was succeeded by her grandson, Andre Carson.

What is the purpose of the Divine Nine organizations? If you were to research the initiatives of each Organization, you would discover programs ranging from youth development programs, voter registration drives and economic empowerment programs to campus clean-up initiatives and beyond. Underneath the surface of most nationally recognized activities implemented by these organizations lies the desire to enhance the local and international community. Community service plays a significant role in the foundation of the Divine Nine. The scope of the organizations do not solely lie on each respective campus, and their impact is evident worldwide. This publication will explore its impact in the Indianapolis community through the graduate chapters of the Divine Nine organizations.

Fall Creek Restaurant 877 E. 30th Street (317) 283-0035 (phone and fax)

Bar-B-Q Heaven, Inc. is a three generation family-owned and operated restaurant located in Indianapolis, IN. We first opened the doors to our MLK store in 1952. Since then, we've grown with the addition of our Fall Creek store, two on-site facilities (Lucas Oil Stadium and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway) and opened a food distribution division. Our mission is to provide our customers with superior food products, excellent customer service and competitive prices. Being driven by our customers' overall satisfaction, our mission is nothing less than our motto..."Best in the WORLD since 1952." We give our customers the "Royal Treatment" to make them feel like Kings and Queens every time they enter our doors. Our customer service treatment is simple...100% customer satisfaction. This proven philosophy keeps our customers coming back. We maintain these same standard with our food distribution division. Unless our customers are totally satisfied, their order is not fulfilled.
