National pan-hellenic council There are nine historically Black Greek Letter Organizations that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council. These organizations are referred to as "The Divine Nine." Each of these fraternities and sororities is rich in history. Ties to one or more of these organizations may be found in many collegeeducated Black families in the United States. The stated purpose and mission of the organization: “Unanimity of thought and action as far as possible in the conduct of Greek letter collegiate fraternities and sororities, and to consider problems of mutual interest to its member organizations.” Neither the NPHC, nor its member national or chapter organizations discriminate on the basis of race or religion.

There are members of the Divine Nine in all professions, including the Congress of the United States of America. A member of Congress serves as a legislator, advocate, educator and communicator. They translate the work of Congress and the complexities of modern issues to constituents. Presented here is a list of the members of the Congressional Black Caucus who are members of the Divine Nine. We would like to call your attention some of the work of these important individuals. The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation each year produces the Annual Legislative Conference, a four-day event held in September (Sept. 16-19, 2015) at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. Thousands of elected officials, business and industry leaders, celebrities, media, emerging leaders and everyday Americans descend upon the Annual Legislative Conference (ALC) and its dozens of policy forums, general sessions, massive exhibit showcase, job fair, book signings and vast networking opportunities. The Congressional Black Caucus – comprised of the African-American members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate – headline ALC every year. The conference program includes more than 70 workshops, seminars and information forums on relevant topics that capture and portray the concerns of African Americans. Participants discuss the challenges facing underserved populations, including health care, economic success and failures, global and domestic security as well as highlight successes and provide critical information that will help to build strong communities, organizations and individual families. The Annual Legislative Conference is one of the most important gatherings of African American leaders. For more information, visit the website at: http://www.cbcfinc.org.

The Programs of Alpha Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-trained women. Driven by its commitment to service and sisterhood, Alpha Kappa Alpha has evolved into one of the world's leading service organizations with more than 265,000 members in 986 graduate and undergraduate chapters in the United States, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Caribbean, Canada, Japan, Germany, South Korea and on the continent of Africa. Alpha Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was chartered on February 16, 1929 in Indianapolis, Indiana and currently has a membership of more than 350 women. The chapter, a part of the sorority’s Central Region, is dedicated to cultivating the community through the implementation of meaningful programming, taking action to improve the lives of others, seeking collaborative efforts and partnerships, and staying true to our love for our great sisterhood. Alpha Mu Omega also has a rich heritage of women making a difference in the Indianapolis community and internationally in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for the last 86 years. Alpha Mu Omega is not only the home to the designer of our sorority crest, Ms. Phyllis Wheatley Waters, but also four former international officers of our sorority: Mrs. Maenelle Newsome, Mrs. Annetta M. Lawson, Ms. Yvonne Perkins, and Mrs. Nadine C. Bonds. Under the leadership of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s International President, Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, Alpha Mu Omega is reaching the community by utilizing the current international program “Launching New Dimensions of Service.” This program addresses the growing needs of local and international communities through the implementation of five targets: Educational Enrichment, Health Promotion, Family Strengthening, Environment Ownership and Global Impact. Target I: Educational Enrichment - The heart of the Educational Enrichment target includes the ASCEND youth enrichment program, the AKA One Million Backpacks campaign and the Think HBCU initiative. ASCEND focuses Achievement, Self-Awareness, Communication, Engagement, Networking and Developmental Skills and provides students with opportunity to receive academic enrichment and life skills training. With AKA One Million Backpacks, one million backpacks and related school supplies will be donated and distributed to students through 2018. Think HBCU supports active advocacy for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and highlights their contribution to the sorority and society.

Target II: Health Promotion - Health awareness of Alzheimer's Disease, Stroke and Mental Illness is the focus of the Health Promotion Target. Alzheimer's disease is one of the fastest growing health challenges among African Americans and the Alzheimer's Disease and Caregiver Support Program generates awareness and support for Alzheimer's programming and research. A stroke prevention awareness campaign with an emphasis on managing high blood press, diet and exercise promotes Stroke and Heart Disease Awareness and Mental Health bring attention to mental illness among populations who are less likely to seek support. Target III: Family Strengthening - This target tackles critical issues facing many families. Community based Childhood Hunger Initiatives will partner with local agencies, food banks and community pantries. The Family Seasonal Wraps Program is a major initiative to collect and donate hats, gloves, socks, scarves, coats, sweaters and other seasonal wraps for families in need. In addition, the Fiscal Responsibility Programs partners with organizations and families to help increase financial planning awareness and the benefits of home ownership. Target IV: Environmental Ownership - This target provides healthy environments and improves the quality of life in the underserved communities. To ensure children have safe and inviting places to play, the AKA 1908 Playground Project Sorority will restore and renew 1,908 existing community and school playgrounds with its Restore, Refresh and Renew Project. The Acts of Green Program promotes environmental sustainability by encouraging recycling, litter prevention and waste management in the community. Target V: Global Impact - This target is based on partnership with the UNA-USA (United Nations Association) to expand understanding of the UN, its mission and focus. A biennial Intergenerational Model U.N. Conference will be held and with a continued Africare partnership youth hunger initiatives will be implemented in Africa. There will also be the following annual Community Impact Days and International Community Service Days to highlight collective impact in program target areas: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January); Pink Goes Red for Heart Health Day (February); 1908 Playgrounds Mobilization Day (May); The Longest Day™ Alzheimer’s Support Activities (June); Mental Health Awareness Day (July) and Childhood Hunger Awareness Day (October).

Fraternities and Sororities host step shows annually at the regional and national conventions. The local collegiate and alumni NPHC host steps shows at their annual picnics. There has been a new movement that has evolved over the years, step shows are being hosted and sponsored by corporate, for profit organizations. These events are bringing more focus on the culture of the Divine Nine. Some are hosted in the summer in the form of Picnics. Stepping: It’s more than the rhythm. It’s more than the dancing. It’s more than the music. It’s stepping. Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines step as “to move by raising the foot and bringing it down elsewhere or by moving each foot in succession,” stepping involves much more than that. In Elizabeth Khalil’s article “Steppin’ Out,” Rashid Darden says that “stepping incorporates cheerleading, military, and drillteam moves, especially the call-and-response element inherent in those forms. That aspect is not only important to the energy of stepping, but to the cultural history to which stepping provides a link.” “The whole call-and-response thing is based in African traditions,” he said. “It’s evolved throughout the years; through slavery and old Negro spirituals to what it is today.” Stepping has evolved over the years. If you have ever been at a night club and have seen a line of people moving through the club with the same motions, then you probably have seen Divine Nine members “strolling”. Strolling is a tradition that traces back to the early 1900’s to Divine Nine organizations such as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and is a tradition practiced by all of the organizations to this day. Strolling functions by having members of a particular Divine Nine organization to line up one after another. Similar to saluting, they begin to move forward through the club in the same dance motions, or many times alternating dance moves. The practice of strolling is a very organized event, as members in a line know every step of the choreographed stroll. Some of the Steps Shows and Strolling events have moved outside. They have evolved into Greek Picnics. Greek Picnics are one of the best times of the year. As the popularity of step show continues to grow, so do the crowds. The Greek Picnic Weekends boosts some of the largest annual gatherings of Divine Nine members in the country. They are designed to provide members of the Divine Nine a unique experience that caters to them. The events have grown from its subtle beginnings to become the most popular destination and focal point for all Greek Chapters, Line Brothers, Line Sisters and Sands to reunite and socialize for one exciting weekend of unity, service and bonding. More importantly, these events have served to put the Divine Nine culture on display for non members to witness and enjoy. For 54

those who do partake, they begin to understand the culture and diversity of its members.

Greek Picnics have grown to become some of the popular annual events of the year. Some of the more popular annual picnics include: Atlanta Greek Picnic Weekend, Midwest Greek Weekend, New Orleans Greek Picnic, Chicago Greek Weekend, Carolina Greek Picnic, Dallas Greek Picnic, Nashville Greek Picnic, Birmingham Greek Weekend, Kansas City Greek Picnic, Texas Greek Picnic, Baltimore Greek Picnic, Orlando Diversified Greek Picnic. For more information visit: blackgreekpride.com and watchtheyard.com Most of the Greek Picnic Weekends today feature a job fair, day parties, happy hours, cookouts, Stroll Competitions, Step Show, a variety of Nightlife events for all ages and community service activities. The evolution of the step show to the Greek Picnic Weekend has been profound!

REAL LEADERS DON’T SEEK FOLLOWERS, THEY INSPIRE! The benefits of joining a Divine Nine Organization are endless. For many, one of the greatest benefits is the opportunity to network. Networking is essential in today’s society. Now consider being a member of a Divine Nine Organization. Most of the Divine Nine Organizations have at least 100,000 members worldwide. Membership provides a common bond not only among fraternity brothers or sorors, but also within the Divine Nine community as a whole. Even more important than networking is having the ability to serve your community in the name of your organization. There is power in numbers, and when the world has the opportunity to witness a group of individuals working together for the common good of the community, more and more people will want to become involved. This is one reason that the legacies of the Divine Nine have continued over so many years. Although life in the Divine Nine has changed over time, members who take their membership seriously are still equipped with skills that can be used in their future careers. The Divine Nine organizations help to improve the leadership and interpersonal skills of its members. There is a correlation between the skills being developed and the ability to be successful in any endeavor. This is not necessarily just famous-successful, like a president or CEO, but successful as a community leader or as a small business owner. What makes Divine Nine life rewarding is that members are given the unique opportunity to interact with and lead their peers. Sometimes members who don’t get along are forced to work together — skills that are vital in the post-college work force. And most importantly, members are given the chance to practice and fail in their endeavors, without losing their network of support. You get the opportunity to fail miserably and have brothers and sisters that love you and care for you pick you up and dust you off and challenge you to do it again – just better. These experiences are truly life changing and uplifting!

What happens when a people is without institutions to articulate its concerns, preserve its heritage, or make manifest its desires? It is vanquished, made into an oppressed caste, or is assimilated into the majority culture--losing its distinctiveness, diminishing its voice, and dissipating its ranks. Fortunately, African Americans have not met this fate. Established in an age when racial segregation and disenfranchisement plagued African Americans, the rise of each of the black fraternities and sororities that make up the “Divine Nine” bore witness to the fact that despite hardships African Americans refused to assent to a status of inferiority. Serving more than just their immediate members, the “Divine Nine” joined with business, civic and professional organizations to provide service to the entire black community. As the twentieth century progressed, black social organizations rose to reflect the middle class aspirations of many African Americans, and more recently civic groups have emerged to address the community’s social, economic, and political challenges..

Phi Beta Sigma celebrated its centennial during the week of July 16-20, 2014 in Washington, D.C. The year 2014 marked a pivotal year for one of the nation’s historically Black fraternities. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity kicked off its centennial year by announcing several events that commemorated the milestone. Staying true to its commitment to service, Phi Beta Sigma engaged in several initiatives, including the Bigger and Better Business program, education and social action involvement and the Sigma Beta Club youth mentoring program. “As we celebrate one century of continuous service within our communities, we march on toward the next century of exceptional service embracing our motto, ‘Culture for Service and Service for Humanity,’” said Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity International President Jonathan Mason. “This celebration marks our rededication to our principles of ‘Brotherhood, Scholarship and Service.’ http:// amsterdamnews.com/news/2014/jan/23/sigmas-celebrate-their-centennial/

Thousands of delegates of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., convened for its national convention in Indianapolis, in July of 2011 and made an “historic pilgrimage” to Indiana University in Bloomington, IN, where the organization was founded nearly 100 years ago. The historically black fraternity also hosted a National Founders Day event in Bloomington in January to mark the centennial of the milestone, which took place on Jan. 5, 1911. Kappa Alpha Psi was the second African American fraternity incorporated as a national organization. Elder Watson Diggs and nine other African American students at IU embraced a mutual vision to form a fraternity that today has 730 chapters and 120,000 members worldwide. Alpha Kappa Alpha celebrated their first century with a year-long commemoration in 2008. The celebration coincided with the sorority’s biennial Boulé. Internationally, some Alpha Kappa Alpha members began marking the festivities by making a pilgrimage to Howard University from January 12 to January 15, 2008. The activities included sorority members financially donating scholarship funds to Howard University, contributing libraries for Middle School for Mathematics and Science and Asbury Dwelling for Senior Citizens, and unveiling a digital version of the entire Ivy Leaf publication. In addition, sorority undergraduate and graduate members who were not available to attend ceremonies in Washington, D.C., held celebrations in local cities. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_Kappa_Alpha#Centennial_celebration:_2008

In the past few years, 6 members of the Divine Nine has celebrated 100 year anniversaries: Alpha Phi Alpha in 2006, Alpha Kappa Alpha in 2008, Kappa Alpha Psi in 2011, Omega Psi Phi in 2011, Delta Sigma Theta in 2013 and Phi Beta Sigma in 2014.. In this article we will the explore the celebration of purpose and growth through press releases issued by the organizations. Alpha Phi Alpha declared 2006 the beginning of its “Centennial Era” as it readied for its Centenary, framed by the slogan First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All. These preparations consisted of nationwide activities and events, including the commissioning of intellectual and scholarly works, presentation of exhibits, lectures, artwork and musical expositions, the production of film and video presentations and a Centennial Convention July 25–30, 2006, in Washington, D.C. The 2006 Centennial Celebration Kickoff launched with a “pilgrimage” to Cornell University on November 19, 2005. That event brought over 700 fraternity members who gathered for a day-long program. Members journeyed across campus and unveiled a new centennial memorial to Alpha Phi Alpha. The memorial—a wall in the form of a “J” in recognition of the Jewels—features a bench and a plaque and is situated in front of the university’s Barnes Hall The seven Cornell students who formed the fraternity, known as the “Seven Jewels,” launched a brotherhood that would achieve great success in leadership and influence in the African-American community and beyond that spans its 100 years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_Phi_Alpha#Centennial_celebration

THE DIVINE NINE AND ‘Sorority Sisters’ The united advocacy against the TV Show ‘Sorority Sisters’

It was quite remarkable watching members of the Divine Nine organize so effectively against Vh1’s now defunct reality series “Sorority Sisters.” “Sorority Sisters”, was a show that followed the lives of “sorors” from four different sororities in Atlanta.

December 20, 2014 The claim is that the show did not display the high ideals of the Divine Nine organizations and in many ways has made a mockery out of the organizations.

The response on social media indicated viewers wanted to see the complete series, the channel said. A decision on whether “Sorority Sisters” will continue has yet to be made, VH1 said in a statement Tuesday. VH1 Bringing ‘Sorority Sisters’ Season to a Quick End By Lynn Elber, AP Television Writer,

January 13, 2015 VH1 is pushing the debut season of “Sorority Sisters” to a quick end after facing criticism for the reality show’s depiction of black sorority members. The channel said that the last three of 10 episodes will air back-to-back Friday. The move is intended to satisfy viewer interest by bringing the cast’s stories full circle, VH1 said. A special episode, “Sorority Sisters The Dialogue,” which featured the women discussing why they joined the show and the controversy it provoked, aired last week.

On behalf of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, Zeta Phi Beta Incorporated and Sigma Gamma Rho Incorporated, we condemn this television show for its exploitation and degradation of our organizations and African American women everywhere. It is our collective desire that VH1 carefully consider the ramifications of such irresponsible programming that continues to exploit and degrade the image of African American women. Our members along with many other members of black fraternal groups have lost confidence in the credibility VH1 and those advertisers that support the show, all of whom have already been notified of our discontent. Our sincere hope is that VH1 is interested enough in regaining tis confidence of African American women and do what is decent, just and economically sound for their network by immediately and indefinitely pulling this disgraceful show from their lineup of programming. As with any issue for which we are passionate, we encourage all of our members, their families and friends to continue to let their voice be heard via social media, email, and postal mail to both VH1 and the advertisers of Sorority Sisters to ensure that our collective record of service and sisterhood is not marginalized on national television. Our organizations, along with our respective legal counsels, are taking all appropriate steps to ensure that we protect the legacy of our organizations, while exhibiting true sisterhood by remaining steadfast to our values, mission and endeavors. As such, we are saddened by the producers to elevate harmful, negative, and stereotypical imagery of African American women in their quest for ratings. Moreover, these cast members willfully misrepresent the ideals of our illustrious organizations, betray the privilege of membership bestowed upon them, undermine our collective promise to uplift communities and each other, and detract from the transformative programs carried out by our members worldwide. This cast, these plot lines and the entire show premise represent the antithesis of who we are as African American women, sorority sisters and friends.

When VH1 announced that they would broadcast “Sorority Sisters”there was a ground swell of public opinion in the Divine Nine community that this was not good. When it premiered, on December 19, 2014 that opinion reached a fever pitch. The National Pan-Hellenic Council immediately began to advocate in an effort to cancel the show. --------------------------------The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is a collaborative organization of nine historically African American, international Greek lettered fraternities and sororities. Often referred to as ‘The Divine Nine,’ the NPHC consists of Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta, Alpha Phi Alpha, Phi Beta Sigma, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Iota Phi Theta. --------------------------------Here’s a chronology of events concerning the VH1 TV Show, Sorority Sisters... December 15, 2014 NPHC issued an official statement denouncing VH1’s latest reality show, Sorority Sisters.

With immediate and decisive action, some sponsors have pulled their ads from VH1’s “Sorority Sisters.” The questions is, will VH1 pull the program or continue to air the show that has everyone upset over how Black women are depicted on the show? Despite the four presidents of the Divine Nine Sororities of Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, Zeta Phi Beta and Alpha Kappa Alpha issuing a letter for VH1 to cancel the show and the growing list of advertisers opting out, VH1 says the show, which amassed 1.3 million views, will go on.

January 13, 2015 Five members of Delta Sigma Theta were expelled permanently from the sorority for their participation on the reviled VH1 reality show set in Atlanta “Sorority Sisters.” Lydia Mitchell, Priyanka Banks, MeToya Monroe, Adrene Ashford and Shanna McCormick. Their expulsion date of January 13 coincided with the day VH1 changed its schedule and dumped the show’s final three episodes unceremoniously. Big Brothers Big Sisters of America Mentoring Brothers in Action is a movement led by Big Brothers Big Sisters and the nation’s three largest African American fraternities Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi and Omega Psi Phi to engage more African American men in fraternal, social, faith-based and professional organizations to get involved in one-to-one mentoring to change the odds for African American boys. Mentoring Brothers in Action hopes to create new and broader pathways to provide mentors for African American boys who disproportionately represent children waiting to be matched with Big Brothers. Mentors are carefully screened and matched with youth who face adversity in long-term, professionally supported mentoring relationships. With the support of the Fraternity Collaborative, Mentoring Brothers.org provides direct ways for African American men to become a part of the solution either as Big Brothers or as participants in group mentoring programs and career and motivation events sponsored by our national and local community partners. The site also provides access to support systems for African American families (largely headed by single mothers and grandmothers) to help youth succeed in school; avoid risky/delinquent behaviors; have higher self-esteem and aspirations. The Fraternity Collaborative has partnered with a number of Big Brothers Big Sisters local agencies to host “friend raisers,” barbershop recruiting drives, Bowl for Kids Sake fundraisers, and other efforts that have been successful throughout the mentoring network to engage more African American men in long-term, professionally supported outcomes-focused mentoring.

Two-year Progress with the African American Fraternity Partnership • Since launching the Big Brothers Big Sisters fraternity collaboration partnership, the mentoring network has enrolled at least 440 of the fraternities’ members as Big Brothers. (Note: These numbers reflect fraternity members who self-identified during enrollment, a process which differs from affiliate to affiliate. The organization continues to improve its enrollment information data collection processes and believe the actual numbers of fraternity members are greater than reported data reflect. • Fraternity partnership members have joined Big Brothers Big Sisters national and local agencies as board members, agency leaders and staffers and are represented on the organization’s Nationwide Leadership Council. • The mentoring network’s fraternity partners have enlisted support from other National Pan-Hellenic Council member organizations for Bowl for Kids’ Sake fundraisers, for example, bringing in over the past two years more than $15,000 72

for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit; $10,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana; $30,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star and $5,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Flint (Michigan). In the past two years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Flint (Michigan)’s annual Pan Hellenic Big Brothers Big Sisters Wine & Cheese Reception raised nearly $30,400 to support the agency’s “Power of 40” recruitment event. The fraternity partners provided Support to Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliates during nationally syndicated urban radio host Michael Baisden’s One Million Mentors Campaign and Save Our Kids tour, which raised $95,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies and resulted in more than 500 volunteer inquiries. The inquiries resulted in 128 new volunteers who are currently in long-term mentoring matches (60 of them, men). Through Operation Lamp Light, Omega Psi Phi is working with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit to adopt a Detroit high school and build a relationship with a core group of 13- to 14-year-old boys. Some Omegas are spending one-to-one time with boys while the larger fraternity supports bimonthly workshops or field trips to museums and sporting events. • Through Rico’s Roundtable and Theta Omega Chapter’s Men of QUALITY Program in Louisville & Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana have partnered to mentor boys as a part of their project to close the achievement gap between minority & majority students. The fraternity partners held barbershop volunteer mentor recruiting drives, bringing African American male mentors to Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Flint (Michigan); Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cleveland; and other Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliates. In an unprecedented move, Kappa Alpha Psi appointed 12 regional mentoring directors to oversee recruitment and retention of prospective Big Brothers. The fraternity is working to provide opportunities for Kappa “Littles” to benefit from its Kappa League program, which has launched the Diamonds in the Rough campaign, promoting greater access to college scholarships and standardized testing preparation.

the civil unrest of 2014: “BLACK LIVES MATTER” The nine historically Black Greek organizations — known collectively as “The Divine Nine” — were born out of the nation’s racial conflict. All were founded on college campuses in the 1900s when black students faced racial prejudice and exclusion that barred them from already existing fraternities and sororities. All organizations were front and center during the protests of civil unrest this year. Members of the Divine Nine answered the call in 2014 by providing support to the families, by being actively involved in protesting the decisions, by advancing legislation to curb the causes (racial profiling) and by providing legal support to the families.

Since the death of Michael Brown, we have seen the deaths of too many other people of color at the hands of police officers. On November 12, the Spirit House Project held a day of remembrance, at which time they read the names of 1000 black and brown victims of police or other state-sanctioned killings since 2007. As the Spirit House Project continues their research into deaths of people of color at the hands of police officers, there is no doubt more instances will be uncovered.

These systemic issues will only be tackled by organized collaborative efforts of nonviolent protest as well as policy implementation. Our police forces should be spending less time militarizing and more time with cultural competency training. Bills such as the Universal Respect Act, are aimed at limiting racial profiling. Additionally, we have heard the call from Michael Brown’s family requesting mandatory use of body cameras by all police departments across the nation.

We will continue to raise our voices and urge our members and others to do so, against the rising militarization of law enforcement. We find it repulsive when illegal acts of looting, arson and attacks on others are done in the name of ‘justice for Michael Brown’. It is equally offensive when some hijack peaceful protest for their own criminal agenda. In both instances, those people should be held accountable. Many members of the Divine Nine have participated in nonviolent protests in Ferguson and in other communities around the United States. We support the exercise of their Constitutional right to free speech. We do not condone acts of violence – by protestors or police – in the furtherance of the change that has to take place. As one organization representing nine fraternities and sororities, our hearts and prayers go out to all those suffering because of Michael Brown’s death. Each of us is invested in our communities as we have been throughout the years. As advocates of and for our communities, we will continue to fight to provide equal justice for black and brown people in America. We will work to change the narrative that perpetuates the stereotype that black and brown people are dangerous and threatening. We are continuing to work together to ensure that equal justice truly prevails. Release by National Pan-Hellenic Council, November 30, 2014, http://www.nphchq.org/beyond-ferguson-joint-statement/
