As Chi Chi Omega grew and evolved, the concept behind Books and Breakfast with Santa evolved as well. Every year members of Chi Chi Omega rally together to donate the food, giveaway, craft and set-up supplies
But Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Chi Chi Omega chapter in conjunction with Emerging Pearls Foundation has worked hard to change that reality. On Saturday, July 27, 2013 hundreds of backpacks were donated stuffed with school supplies to students in Central Indiana.

Over the years, members of Chi Chi Omega became increasingly concerned over the achievement gap experienced by children of color, focusing on the most recent reports that featured insights about children who attended schools with the highest poverty percentages, the ongoing connection between morning nutrition and achievement, and intentional wanting to make a difference beyond a one-day event.

But many students in Central Indiana head to class with nothing but a plastic bag to carry their books and school supplies in. The painful reality is that hundreds of Central Indiana students don't have the tools they need for school.

Currently, Alpha Mu Omega chapter serves the community under the Global Leadership through Timeless Service Initiatives: Emerging Young Leaders program, Health– Sustainability Initiative, Global Poverty Initiative, Economic Security, Social Justice and Human Rights and Internal Leadership Training for External Service. Through these initiatives, in 2012, the chapter led 83 service projects totaling 3,781 hours and impacting 88,267 individuals in the Indianapolis community. 28
Signature Program Highlights Emerging Young Leaders (EYL) Initiative - This introductory program impacts the lives of young ladies in grades six through eight by providing leadership development, civic engagement, enhanced academic preparation and character building. The increasing demands of the twenty-first century mandate our youth to be better leaders at a younger age making smart choices with positive consequences. For Alpha Mu Omega chapter, EYL is the beginning of the learning and leadership pipeline for young ladies. From EYL, young ladies can continue on to Rosebuds, a program for 9th and 10th graders, and eventually participate in the chapter’s scholarship program, Debutante Cotillion. In January, (EYL) participants experienced a fun-filled day with learning the importance of philanthropy, managing their money, why giving back to the community is important, the future outlook of STEM careers and the proper use of technology to build their social network. EYL participants also had a wonderful opportunity to hear from a local youth speaker, Kayanna Lovette, and learn more on the importance of entrepreneurship and how this young lady was able to make her dreams come true by hosting an annual Miss Indy’s Dazzling Star
Pageant for young ladies in grades five through 9. Kayanna Lovette, a 15-year old motivational speaker and coach, shared some of her struggles and mistakes made as a youth. She also explained how she was able to turn her life around by following her passion of motivating students to follow their dreams. Additionally, during the spring of this year, Emerging Young Leaders participated in an elegant dinner and workshop centered on teaching young ladies the proper way to dine and carry themselves in a sophisticated environment. All young ladies were asked to dress for success and had the privilege to enjoy a full course dining experience and learn several etiquette tips for fine dining. This included: proper table settings for formal dining, placement of eating utensils, resting and finishing positions, table manners if someone needs to be excused, proper ways to care yourself in public as well as social etiquette.

Many of those participating had recently taken part in our Spring 2013 Project Alpha, the first phase of a continuing program we hope will be a model for future years. The purpose of this trip was to honor the memory of a recently deceased industrious Brother, who dedicated his life to the uplift of youth. Our goal is to reinforce values of homage to elders, acknowledge sacrifices of ancestors and to enhance the rich legacy of our culture. It is our desire that the trip ignites a passion and goal achievement for this upcoming school year. As the pictures suggest, the first annual ride was a pure TKO !!!!!!! The Freedom Ride Committee included Brothers J. Davis, V. Davis, J. Reynolds, R. Sweatt, and Dr. L. Wright. Twenty four young men had the opportunity to interact with 21 Brothers in person (and 30 Brothers behind the scenes additionally) on April 27, 2013. We didn’t have enough “day” left to do everything in one session, but this allows us to set our sights on an overnight trip to accomplish and encompass all the great feedback offered. We had to make extra food runs (mental check for more pizzas next time). I almost had to call for ambulances because a few of our Brothers were about to collapse at
lunch time, but Jimmy John’s perked them up before having to call 911. We had prepared for 6 months, the last three with pre-conference sessions on Saturdays. The room was prepped the night before and most importantly we were well-prepared for the 24 youth who arrived as early as 7:40 a.m.

What We Do
The programs of the Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter (IAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. are based upon the organization’s Five Point Programmatic Thrust – Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement. Five of our top service programs are Financial Fortitude, Scholarships, our youth initiatives, the Black College Tour, and Health Awareness. Financial Fortitude is a program designed to increase financial literacy and stability. The signature event each year is the Economic Empowerment Breakfast and Seminar covering topics such as budgeting, home buying, and entrepreneurship. For over three decades, the Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter has awarded scholarships to deserving
young African-American women in their senior year of high school. Scholarships are awarded based upon academic achievement, character, community service and extra-curricular activities, and financial need. Delta’s youth development programs include the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy for girls ages 11-14, the Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS (Growing & Empowering Myself Successfully) for high school aged girls, and EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) which focuses on African-American males. Since 1985, the Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter (IAC) has taken high school students on campus tours of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The Black College Tour (BCT) occurs annually
during spring break, and to date over 1200 students have toured at least 30 HBCUs. The BCT provides students the opportunity to gain first-hand experience on campus; participants interact with administrators, admissions officers, students, and faculty. Students can ask questions, look at dorms, investigate extracurricular activities, and make comparisons to other colleges in which they are interested. This tour allows Central Indiana students to see what an HBCU can offer and whether this is the path they want to follow for their college career. One thing not left to the imagination is the impact that the 28year old Black College Tour has made on the participating students and the Indianapolis community. Based on the numerous testimonies the sorority has

THE FOUNDING OF IOTA PHI THETA FRATERNITY Iota Phi Theta Fraternity is a nationally incorporated, predominantly African-American collegiate fraternity. It was founded on September 19, 1963 at Morgan State University (then Morgan State College) in Baltimore, Maryland. At present, it consists of over 70,000 members. There are currently around 300 undergraduate and alumni chapters, as well as colonies located in over 40 US states, the District of Columbia, the Bahamas, Japan and South Korea. The fraternity holds membership in the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), an umbrella organization comprising nine (9) International Historically AfricanAmerican Greek letter Sororities and Fraternities, and the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC). The Centaur Magazine is the official publication of the Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. First published as a newsletter, the Centaur has evolved into a biannual magazine. Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. takes pride in its continued effort to facilitate and participate in various community service ventures and initiatives throughout various communities, especially the disenfranchised. The fraternity was founded by 12 men—Albert Hicks, Lonnie Spruill, Jr., Charles Briscoe, Frank Coakley, John Slade, Barron Willis, Webster Lewis, Charles Brown, Louis Hudnell, Charles Gregory, Elias Dorsey, Jr., and Michael Williams—in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement even though there were already 4 other prominent Historically Black Fraternities at the time. Influences included organizations such as the Black Panthers, SNCC, plus individuals like Malcolm X, and Stokely Carmichael. Iota brothers participated in various protests and sit-ins throughout the city of Baltimore. The Iota founders were distinguished from their peers as they were all non-traditional students. Three to five years older than their peers, many had served in the military, worked full-time while attending classes full-time, and had families with small children. These elements gave the Founders a different perspective than the typical fraternity member.
Iota Phi Theta sought to eradicate segregation with a protest that was organized against the Northwood Shopping Center in Baltimore, Maryland shortly after its founding. Big Brothers of America was supported throughout the 1960s and 1970s. In fact, in 1974, then Grand Polaris, Thomas Dean appeared in a local television commercial on
behalf of Big Brothers of America. Their idealism continues to strive with service initiatives to involve the fraternity with the NAACP, The United Negro College Fund, The National Sickle Cell Foundation, The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, The National Federation of the Blind, and Project IMAGE. Most recently, the establishment of the National IOTA Foundation and Iota Youth Alliance helped extend Iota Phi Theta idealism regarding service and the building of traditions in the community. In 1992, the fraternity established the National Iota Foundation, a TaxExempt entity whose purpose is to assist the needy through scholarships and other financial assistance. Since its creation, the foundation has distributed over $250,000 in programs and services. They have a strong commitment to bring about empowerment to the African American community.

Today, October 17th, the new administration for Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. officially takes office! First, I would like to thank those of you who supported Bro. Rich Gilbert and myself during our campaign and in the past election. We greatly appreciate your support and are humbled by those expressions of confidence in our abilities to lead Iota Phi Theta for the next four years. However, as I have said and will continue to say, WE (the current administration) will only be effective and successful with the support of the Brotherhood. It is my hope that under our administration, Brothers are inspired to become more active at all levels of leadership, as well as activity within the Fraternity in order for US, collectively, to be successful!
L O C A L
“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” President Barack Obama.
However, in order for our Brotherhood to continue being the ‘relevant Change Agents’ that we were founded to be, there is much internal development that needs to occur, from the individual Brother to the chapters to the regions, which ultimately will strengthen our Fraternity, overall. To that end, for the next four years, there will be major focus on training and development. Although ‘esprit de corps’ in regards to chapters and regions, as well as the concept of Individuality within Brothers can be positive dynamics, it is crucial that Brothers understand that there is truly only ONE Iota - One Handshake, One Oath, One Brotherhood, One collective Mission and Focus.
A N D
A message from the 21st International Grand Polaris
For the next 4 years (of this administration), it is my hope that our Brotherhood continues that ‘Tradition’ of being ‘Relevant through Service’ ... service to our communities and our people, both nationally and internationally. To this end, my administration will embark of ambitious community service endeavors to address the plethora of issues affecting our people both at home and abroad. It is my sincere hope that all like-minded Iota Men join in these endeavors to maximize our impact, hence our relevance, on our people and communities.
L E A D E R S H I P
Since its founding date, Iota Phi Theta has continued to grow and has become the fifth-largest, and fastest growing predominantly black fraternal organization in the United States. As of now, there are over 70,000 members in the United States and overseas. A key appeal of Iota Phi Theta is, as an organization, it refuses to have its members bind themselves to a defined fraternal image but celebrates the individuality of its members. More importantly, its members continue to build upon the fraternity's commitment to success and excellence with individual and collective achievements in such fields as politics, education, law, business, healthcare and the performing arts.
H I S T O R Y,
For the past 50 years, Iota Men have been “Building a Tradition” through our perpetuation of our cardinal principles of Scholarship, Leadership, Citizenship, Fidelity and Brotherhood within the organization, but more importantly, within our respective communities. Founder John Slade once stated that the Founders wanted to create an organization that was relevant to our communities. Without question, over the past 50 years, the Brotherhood of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. has done just that, albeit often quietly and behind the scenes, without much fanfare. For those we’ve served, our contributions are both well-noted and appreciated, and we’ve earned their respect. However, it is time for the rest of the world to know of our Fraternity’s positive contributions and impacts.

their color, religion or national origin. It is a fact of which KAPPA ALPHA PSI is justly proud that the Constitution has never contained any clause which either excluded or suggested the exclusion of a man from membership merely because of his color, creed, or national origin. The Constitution of KAPPA ALPHA PSI is predicated upon, and dedicated to, the principles of achievement through a truly democratic Fraternity. Chartered and incorporated originally under the laws of the State of Indiana as Kappa Alpha Nu on May 15, 1911, the name was changed to KAPPA ALPHA PSI on a resolution offered and adopted at the Grand Chapter in December 1914. This change became effective April 15, 1915, on a proclamation by the then Grand Polemarch, Elder Watson Diggs. Thus, the name acquired a distinctive Greek letter symbol and KAPPA ALPHA PSI thereby became a Greek letter Fraternity in every sense of the designation. Taken from: “A SHORT CHRONICLE OF KAPPA ALPHA PSI FRATERNITY”
a brief history of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi , a college Fraternity, now comprised of functioning Undergraduate and Alumni Chapters on major campuses and in cities throughout the country, is the crystallization of a dream. It is the beautiful realization of a vision shared commonly by the late Revered Founders Elder Watson Diggs; John Milton Lee; Byron Kenneth Armstrong; Guy Levis Grant; Ezra Dee Alexander; Henry Tourner Asher; Marcus Peter Blakemore; Paul Waymond Caine; Edward Giles Irvin and George Wesley Edmonds. It was the vision of these astute men that enabled them in the school year 1910 - 11, more specifically the night of January 5, 1911, on the campus of Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana, to sow the seed of a fraternal tree whose fruit is available to, and now enjoyed by, college men everywhere, regardless of 44

What We Do white house initiative on guide right program
H I S T O R Y,
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated is proud to announce that as of Tuesday, August 6, 2013 it is now working closely with the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans to ensure that all caring adults, especially African American fathers and male mentors are engaged in supporting African American learning and development, through a recently established working group focused on fatherhood and mentoring. This development comes upon the heels of the successes of Kappa Alpha Psi’s National Guide Right program and the positive outcomes it has provided to young men of color ages 8-18 throughout the country in the areas of personal development, academic achievement, mentorship and college access. Kappa Alpha Psi aims to provide assistance to the White House’s initiative and its executive director David Johns on understanding the best practices and strategies to address the educational issues that concern African Americans and youth about the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans On July 26, 2012, President Obama launched a new White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans to help accelerate national efforts to support African American students. Improving educational opportunities for all students is critical to ensuring that we increase college completion and employment rates to strengthen our nation’s economy.

sharing the news of the omega psi phi fraternity achievement week activies for 2013 This article is taken from a conversation between two men at the Indiana State House. A member of Omega Psi Phi shared the story with the speaker of the House of Representatives.... Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize the men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. for the events of the 2013 Achievement Week hosted by the Zeta Phi Chapter. The chapter provides meritorious service to the Indianapolis community. The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity was founded on Friday evening, November 17, 1911 by three Howard University undergraduate students, Edgar A. Love, Oscar J. Cooper, and Frank Coleman, and their faculty adviser, Professor Ernest E. Just. Together they laid the foundation of an organization based on the principles of manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift. For one hundred and two years, the membership has upheld a strong tradition of friendship and civic engagement. The men of Zeta Phi Chapter is a group of alumni members. It was founded on April 29, 1925. At this year’s Annual Achievement Week Banquet, the Zeta Phi Chapter honored the Achievement Week Award recipients from the City and Zeta Phi. These awards are given to the men and women who, through their character and actions, display Omega Psi Phi’s four cardinal principles. I congratulate the following individuals on being awarded these honors: the 48
Citizen of the Year Award: City County President Maggie Lewis; Omega Man of the Year-Graduate: Brother James Officer III; Omega Man of the Year-Undergraduate: Brother James Innis; Founders Award: Brother Charles Price Sr.; and Superior Service: Brother Rocky Harvey. Mr. Speaker, I ask that my colleagues join me in conveying our appreciation for years of civic service by the Zeta Phi Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. It is civic groups like the Zeta Phi Chapter that define the character of our communities and give measure to our generosity of spirit. Mr. Speaker, I ask that you recognize the guest speaker for this year’s Banquet, Brother Benjamin Crump. Benjamin L. Crump is a principal with the Tallahassee firm of Parks & Crump, LLC. He has provided legal representation and recovered large awards on behalf of their clients in some of the most high profile cases in the United States. Crump is also known for taking on pro bono cases with civil rights implications. A notable case was Trayvon Martin who on February 26, 2012 was killed by George Zimmerman who followed the unarmed African American teenager for blocks as he walked from a convenience store to his father’s house before Zimmerman confronted and shot him. Brother Crump shared stories about that and other cases with civil rights implications. M r . Speaker, this year’s banquet was held on Friday. Would you like to know what happened earlier in the week? Well, I am glad that you asked.... In the week leading up to Achievement Week , we visited 3 Omega Elders, brothers in their

On Tuesday, November 12, over 25 brothers came together to present an Assault on Illiteracy Program at IPS School 51. The brothers divided up two by two to visit grades 1 through 5 and work with the students on their reading skills. The program served as the kick-off of our QUES Mentoring program that is operating at IPS School 51 and IPS School 48. Mr. Speaker in my humble opinion, the highlight of the Achievement Week was the 3rd Annual Revival hosted on Thursday, November 14. The revival featured Brother Bishop Dr. Joseph Walker III, at Light of the World Church. Brother Pastor David Hampton presided the event. The praise team was led by Lamar Campbell and the Eastern Star choir. The Revival entitled: “One Night Stand” was a powerful experience with hundreds joining us for an incredible time of bold preaching and amazing worship. There were lives changed and souls saved.... As you can see Mr. Speaker, Achievement Week hosted by the men of Zeta Phi Chapter representing the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity for the good of the citizens on Indianapolis, was truly inspiring. All of the events took place while in the midst of our annual leadership transition. Omega’s fiscal year ends October 31. I can’t wait to see what is in store for next year!

elder years that today are sick or under the weather. The legends of Zeta Phi included: B r o t h e r Taylor Baker, retired judge; Brother William Malone, educator; Brother Jerry McCord, retired businessman and insurance professional. This was a special year of visits, there was laughter and tears of joy shared by all. Mr. Speaker, the chapter hosted a local version of the Omega Essay Contest. We solicited college bound high seniors to engage in a contest to write an essay entitled: “What Do You View as the Critical Skills Needed to be Successful in College and Beyond?”. During the banquet, we announced the winners and presented them with scholarship awards. Olivia Odle won 1st place and $1,000. Jaquantey Bowens was won $500 and 2nd place. Desiree Anderson won 3rd place and was awarded $300 and Alexander Olaidmeji was awarded $200 for 4th place. On Sunday, November 10, we hosted a spirited Omega Worship Service, at Antioch Missionary Baptist, with Brother Pastor Dr. Clyde Posley, Jr. presiding. Brothers and their families were truly blessed by the message shared by Brother Posley and the fellowship of the church family and friends. On Monday, November 11, over fifty members of Zeta Phi convened to fellowship and watch the Monday Night Football Game featuring the Miami Dolphins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the Peace of Mind Pub & Eatery. There were new and old friends present.

A MESSAGE TO CELEBRATE THE 91ST FOUNDERS’ DAY Her story began under the most bluest of skies with a sun so golden that it could only have been created to denote the birth of royalty. On that faithful day 91 years ago it began, seven mighty women came together for one purpose to birth what over 90,000 women are honored to hold to our hearts today; Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. It was no act of serendipity that introduced this organization to the world. It was through the hopes, dreams, and the desire of seven women who wanted to answer an unanswered call to stand together as women; as women of color in an unfriendly climate to build an institution that would greatly impact the quality of life and progress society through service. At the Teachers’ College at the Irvington Campus of Butler University located on 13th Street and College Avenue in Indianapolis, INFounder Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Founder Bessie Mae Downey Rhodes Martin, Founder Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford, Founder Nannie Mae Foster Gahn Johnson, Founder Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Founder Cubena McClure, and Founder Vivian White Marbury on a crisp fall day; namely November 12, 1922 “laid the cornerstone and foundation for the greatest adventure.” This adventure grew from the beginning at Alpha to reach the furthest parts of the globe with over 500 chapters nationally and internationally. These 56
women were trendsetters, trailblazers; simply put they were the courageous sheroes of their time. They founded an organization for women whose hues glistened in all shades of mahogany while ivory sheets rebuked their sheer existence; they stood resolute and determined to leave a legacy for all womankind. These extraordinary women were relentless in their endeavors to implement a beacon of light only two years after the suffrage movement they knew what others had failed to conceive that through the hallmarks of education and a deep commitment to the community through selfless acts, that society would truly gain the knowledge to propel and reap the benefits of “Greater Service, Greater Progress.” Embossed in their hearts was the notion to “Go Forward”, because they knew that “The World was waiting for the sunrise”, and that golden sunrise could only be realized through the efforts of the ladies who would become members of Sigma Gamma Rho. In less than a decade, the sisterhood will embrace a century of excellence. The
word says the first shall be last and the last shall be first, Sigma Gamma Rho was last created best designed. This Sorority has been exemplary from the start; there was no reason to follow trends because the Founders set them; from pivotal programming like the legendary partnership with March of Dimes for our signature programProject Reassurance to the current grant received from the CDC for HIV/ AIDS research. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. has always been comfortable with exploring unchartered territory; as she was not born with a spirit of fear. On this day we walk upon an open book with torches in our hands, blazing lights exude from the center of our hearts. Great is the woman that chooses the royal blue and antique gold, Greater is she that truly exhibits her true works and what the Founders have called each of us to do. Sigma Gamma Rho is not a hobby it is a calling. It is something that speaks to you when you first stepped foot on campus, read her story, or met her membership. She was the lighthouse that summoned you home. She remains vital, innovative, and a cut above the rest to this day. To Thee Only 91 years in the making, a sisterhood that is breathtaking, a bond that is neverbreaking, and a love that is forever illuminating! “Greater Service, Greater Progress”
H I S T O R Y,
my dear sisters carry her essence in our spirits…her truth in our minds….and her vision in the crux of our hands…. and we continue to celebrate her birth… Today we represent the culmination of the heights of the highest attainments and the strength of the brightest light. Sorors, today is the day that we relish in the prophetic words spoken to our Founders by Attorney R.L. Brokenburr, “You young ladies have started something Great and Wonderful for the Women of our Country.” Today is the day that we epitomize that Great and Wonderful thing. Today is the day that we remember the truth about 10 pearls and two rubies; and enlighten the world. Today we are reminded of the exact moment that we fell in love with the essence of the fellowship of the royal blue and gold. Today is the day that we reminisce on when we were hoping to find the way that opens the door for all that seek. Today is the day we honor the spirit of our most precious cultured pearls and guide the enthusiasm of the newest aspirant. Today we pay homage to the sacrifice of seven bold women who fervently worked on Saturdays and evenings to birth what we now know as the most amazing and blessed sisterhood. Today is the day that Sigma was made let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Happy Founders Day Sorors Of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.!
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. (ΣΓΡ) was founded on November 12, 1922 at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana by seven young educators. It was incorporated within the state of Indiana in December 1922 and became a national collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929, when a charter was granted and the Alpha chapter was established. The sorority is a non-profit whose aim is to enhance the quality of life within the community. Public service, leadership development and the education of youth are the hallmark of the organization's programs and activities. Founded in the midst of segregation, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is the only sorority of the four historically African-American sororities which comprise the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) established at a predominantly white campus. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority,Inc. has over 100,000 members with more than 500 undergraduate and alumnae chapters throughout the United States, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Canada, Africa and Korea. Sigma Gamma Rho also supports two affiliates: the RHOERS, a group of young women, and PHILOS, women who are friends of the sorority.

zeta phi beta organizational leadership conference
This mobile application allowed us, during the conference to remain as up to date as possible with any changes. Not only was Guidebook an efficient tool, it also saved the sorority money. Also prior to the conference, Sorors completed a survey that gauged their leadership style. Based upon how a Soror answered the questions, she was scored as ‘D’ for Dominant, ‘I’ for Influence, ‘S’ for Steadiness, or ‘C’ for Conscientious. The survey results lead to an educational opportunity which allowed Sorors Boulé 2014 is less than a year away and we want the Great Lakes Region to be recognized for our service and many achievements. So let’s turn it up! Have a phenomenal year and I will see you at the state conferences. God Bless each of you! Wow, where did the summer go? Time flies and now here we are in September. Welcome to fiscal year 2013-14. Much has taken place since our last newsletter. Our Undergraduates are back on campus and our Youth are in school for the school year. Congratulations to Grand Basileus Wright and the ZOL Team on a spectacular ZOL conference in July. THANK YOU GREAT LAKES for your generosity & hospitality. Special gratitude to the Indiana State Organization and to the Indiana State Director Dr. Susan D. Johnson. We had highest number of attendees and the Great Lakes Region extended the hospitality wholeheartedly. Each & every attendee; Zeta, Amicae, & HQ staff member received a nice gift on behalf of the region. I say to you, the GREAT LAKES REGION, I am so proud and deeply moved by those who rolled up their sleeves and just
The 2013 Zeta Organizational Leadership Conference took place in Indianapolis, Indiana the weekend of July 19th - 21st. There was much anticipation surrounding this weekend, due to the fact that over 900 Zeta Phi Beta women had registered. This was the first national conference that took the “green” approach by making training less about papers and more about utilizing our electronic resources. It was stressed to Sorors to bring their I-Pads, tablets, computers, or smart phones so that instant access to all of the materials for the conference. Before the conference began, Sorors were encouraged to download a program called Guidebook. 60

Zeta Phi Beta (ΖΦΒ) is an international, historically black Greek-lettered sorority founded on January 16, 1920 by five collegiate women at Howard University. Zeta Phi Beta was founded on the simple belief that sorority elitism and socializing should not overshadow the real mission for progressive organizations – to address societal mores, ills, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day. Zeta Phi Beta is organized into 800+ chapters, in eight intercontinental regions including the USA, Africa, Europe, Asia and the Caribbean. In 1948, Zeta Phi Beta became the first Greek-letter organization to charter a chapter in Africa (in Monrovia, Liberia). It was also the first organization to establish adult and youth auxiliary groups and centralize its operations in a national headquarters. Today, there are also chapters in U.S. Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Bahamas, Japan, Korea, Barbados, and Haiti.

Who We Are National pan-hellenic council There are nine historically Black Greek Letter Organizations that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council. These organizations are referred to as "The Divine Nine." Each of these fraternities and sororities is rich in history. Ties to one or more of these organizations may be found in many college-educated Black families in the United States. The stated purpose and mission of the organization: “Unanimity of thought and action as far as possible in the conduct of Greek letter collegiate fraternities and sororities, and to consider problems of mutual interest to its member organizations. Neither the NPHC, nor its member national or chapter organizations discriminate on the basis of race or religion.

Who We Are
The Phi Beta Kappa Society, founded on December 5, 1776, at The College of William & Mary, is generally recognized as the first Greekletter student society in North America. The main developments associated were the use of Greekletter initials as a name and the establishment of chapters at different campuses.

How We Grow Promote: The Benefits of Membership
The benefits of joining a Divine Nine Organization are endless. For many, one of the greatest benefits is the opportunity to network. Networking is essential in today’s society. Now consider being a member of a Divine Nine Organization. All Divine Nine Organizations have at least 100,000 members worldwide. Instantly, that classroom of 25 grows. Membership provides a common bond not only among fraternity brothers or sorors, but also within the Greek community as a whole. Even more important than networking is having the ability to serve your community in the name of your organization. There is power in numbers, and when the world has the opportunity to witness a group of individuals working together for the common good of the community, more and more people will want to become involved. This is one reason that the legacies of Black Greek Organizations have continued over so many years.
O F T H E D I V I N E N I N E I N I N D I A N A
• Career networking. Sharing similar career interests within a social organization means you have an automatic list of contacts potentially willing to share and support your dreams.
By reading this article, it shows that either you or someone you know is interested not only in Black Greek Letter Organizations but also in learning more about attending college. Just by attending college, you will have the world at your disposal. There are so many opportunities that can arise from just stepping foot into a classroom. Imagine the experiences and knowledge that each person brings with them and consider the opportunities that lie before each student after graduation.
G R O W T H
The Benefits of Divine Nine Membership The group of friends you’ll find in black sororities and fraternities is just one of the benefits of Divine Nine life. Here are the primary benefits:
Lifelong friendships and community building experience are just a few of the benefits of joining a black fraternity or sorority.
F O R
What is the purpose of these organizations? If you were to research the initiatives of each Black Greek Letter Organization, you would discover programs ranging from voter registration drives and economic empowerment programs to campus clean-up initiatives and beyond. Underneath the surface of most nationally recognized activities implemented by these organizations lies the desire to enhance the local and international community. Community service plays a significant role in the foundation of all Divine Nine Organizations. For example, the first public service initiative completed by the newly founded Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was the 1913 Women’s Suffrage March in Washington, DC. Members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. also showed a unique interest in women’s rights during the early stages of their organization’s existence. Early interests of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., founded in 1914, also heavily focused on the enhancement of the world in which we live. Their interests included anti-lynching laws and international issues occurring in the Republic of Haiti. As you can see, the scope of these organizations does not solely lie on each respective college or university campus, and their impact is evident worldwide.
• Charitable opportunities. Because fraternity and sorority members are required to complete a certain level of charitable work yearly, you’ll have an automatic outlet to give back to your community. • Leadership training. Greek organizations typically put a large emphasis on leadership positions, giving you a chance to prove your management ability to potential employers.
S T R A T E G I E S
Why were the Divine Nine Organizations founded? First and foremost, it is important for you to understand why these organizations exist. During the time in which the first Divine Nine Organization was established, African Americans across the country were faced with the harsh realities of racerelated discrimination. Repercussions from slavery were well saturated in the fabric of the American culture, and due to situations resulting from these discriminatory practices, various organizations established by the African American community began to surface and some of them were Black Greek Letter Organizations. Since 1906—the founding year of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.—nine fraternities and sororities (affectionately known as the Divine Nine) have had the privilege of developing and establishing chapters throughout the United States and the world. These organizations provided a common ground for a common purpose. The establishment of these brotherhoods and sisterhoods brought together men and women who were passionate about the goals and ideals of their organization and made a commitment to work together to make a difference in the world in which they lived.
There is also a social advantage to becoming a member of a Black Greek organization. You may have heard that the most important thing to get out of your college experience is a quality education. However, you should also take time to enjoy yourself. Becoming involved in organizations on campus can help you to gain a greater sense of ownership of your college or university. If you think Greek life may be something you are interested in, check it out. You may cherish your experiences in the organization for the rest of your life. For more information, we suggest that you do your homework and conduct research.

All of the members of the Divine Nine utilize honorary membership to recognize a person who has advanced their professional life through leadership and service. Many have made outstanding achievements that set them apart in their communities and careers and make them worthy of recognition with the highest honor. It is for that reason, I think the members of the Divine Nine should select honorary members. Some members of the Divine Nine think otherwise. Some say the organization is hunting glory, seeking famous person to add to the ranks. Some say that the honorees could have taken the opportunity to pledge in college. Some feel honorees should follow the same process as regular members.

questions about honorary membership. Was it necessary? No. Was it good for the fraternity? I feel strongly that it is. As I took the opportunity to meet and greet each of the new members, I was reminded that each had advanced their professional life through leadership and service. They were operating “a cut above”. We were honoring that measure of men. I believe that it was and is the thing to do. One of the members was Shaquille O’Neal.

Should the Divine Nine organizations admit honorary members?
A few years ago during my graduate life my fraternity purchased a new headquarters. It was a much needed upgrade. For the grand opening, the national officers hosted a program to initiate honorary members. There were 14 members bestowed with honorary membership that day. As I think of that day, I remember that I was proud to be a member. Proud to welcome the new honorary members. Proud to be in the midst of greatness. As we sang the hymn with joy, I pondered some 94

Should the Divine Nine organizations eliminate hazing? In 1990 the Divine Nine organizations issued a joint statement announcing the elimination of pledging and each has instituted within its respective organization a revised membership development and intake process.

What do you think???? Did I answer this question the way you think or should we close the door to those with different sexual orientation? Or should those with alternate sexual orientation hide the truth? We welcome your comments, views and opinions on this and other subjects. Please go to www.divineninemagazine and post your comments. I submit to you that the decline in membership in the Divine Nine organizations at the undergraduate levels in Indiana is rooted in hazing. Hazing is not the only reason, alcohol abuse and changing student values challenge the growth in the Divine Nine organizations.

Years ago at my undergraduate chapter, we had a member admitted to the graduate school who by his own admission had “feminine ways”. This occurred while I was still an undergraduate. He was not a member of our chapter, but he did want to participate in chapter activities. During the first fraternity meeting of the semester, a member challenged him about his sexual orientation. He answered, do you think that any man with feminine ways is gay? The chapter was torn by his presence. The hard liners wanted no part. Others confessed, if he was a member, then he should enjoy the privileges. While pondering this issue for myself, I began to equate the discrimination that African Americans experienced in America to the discrimination of religion, national origin, sexual orientation, age, disability, or any other status protected by law or regulation. I decided that I just would not do it..... Yes, I welcomed his full participation in chapter activities.
Hazing exposes the organizations to lawsuits and embarrassment. Today it is this writers opinion as the most critical issue negatively impacting membership at undergraduate chapters. Hazing does not only occur in undergraduate chapters but it is the root cause of chapter suspensions and revocations. When members stop hazing, undergraduate membership will begin to flourish again.

The Divine Nine organizations do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, age, disability, or any other status protected by law or regulation....Therefore they should admit gay people!

Should the Divine Nine organizations admit gay people?
What is hazing and how has it evolved? Hazing began as mere favors (such as delivering requested things on campus, washing member’s cars, baking sweets for members, serenades, etc.) to more intensified requests (buying things for members, doing homework for members, cleaning common rooms of chapter houses, etc.). Eventually, hazing took a dangerous turn when members realized that belittling, embarrassing, and mentally and physically breaking down pledges was an easier way to ensure that only the mentally and physically strongest of the potential new members made it through their recruitment process.
