Dear Neighbors, As we embark on our fourth year here at Danville Living Magazine, I am thankful and humbled by the success. First and foremost, our purpose is to bring neighbors closer together. We have dozens of residents contributing to the magazine each month and we want to invite you to participate by adding your articles, stories and photos! Secondly, our sponsors choose to contribute a portion of their ad budget to making this magazine possible for you as a West Danville resident. They truly love the idea of a neighborhood newsletter-style magazine and wanted to be part of OUR neighborhood. These sponsors make this magazine possible. There are no paid subscriptions; it’s delivered free to you each month. We ask that you please take a moment to thank our sponsors, and let them know how much you appreciate them! Without their generosity, this magazine would not exist. Also, please welcome our new Content Coordinator Alex Sullivan, a West Danville resident since 2017. Send your ideas, stories, and community events to asullivan@ bestversionmedia.com. In Gratitude,

Resident Feature

Meet the

Soine Family: Living with joy and purpose By Alex Sullivan, Resident since 2017

L

ike a scene from your favorite movie, this Pacific Northwest couple met at a grocery store in Portland, Oregon in 1998. Following a dream romance they were engaged only a few months later and married the very next year. This summer, Jeremy and Jenn Soine will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary with the same joy and excitement they had as newlyweds. Jeremy has a BS in Economics from the University of Puget Sound and an MBA from University of Chicago. Jenn received a BA in English and History from University of Oregon. They’ve since welcomed two kids, Jackson, 14, and Madeleine, 12. The family also has a 6 year old Yorkie named Lily. Looking for a walkable small town that fostered their love for outdoor activities they could do as a family, the Soines landed in Danville in 2008. “Our first week in our home, our neighbors came over with food, a neighborhood contact list and welcomed us as if we were born and raised here.” Building on that sense of community, the family dove right in with their own involvement around town. The whole family is active in Mustang Soccer and Del Amigo Swim Team, with Jenn serving as a team manager for the former and Co-President of the latter. Jenn also helped start the Run Club at Montair Elementary School, which is still running strong! Further cementing their deep love for sports, the family enjoys cheering on the San Ramon Wolves soccer teams, the University of Oregon Ducks, and the Golden State Warriors.

Jackson and Madeleine take great pleasure in traveling the globe with their parents, and the feeling is very mutual. “We enjoy taking the kids on a cultural vacation each year, both in the United States and Internationally.” One notable adventure was in 2017 when Jackson and Jeremy spent two weeks in Malawi, Africa building a school with the organization buildOn. This organization works both nationally and globally to provide safe

and accessible education to children living below the poverty line. A trip like that is one that is not easily forgotten. The family’s last trip was a road trip from Barcelona, Spain to the southern coast of France. Looking forward, the whole family is ready for their upcoming trip to Israel. In addition to being globetrotters, the kids are also involved in Community Presbyterian Church Wildside youth group and both belong to their schools’ Pledge MARCH 2019

for Humanity. Ever growing as individuals, Jenn and Jeremy have had successful careers outside of the home as well. They were both working for food and beverage companies at the time they met. Jeremy started out working

for E&J Gallo Winery and remained there for 17 years. After working for a couple of other companies, he is now the EVP/General Manager for EVER Beauty based out of San Francisco. Jenn left the corporate world and is now an entrepreneur; “I spent 15 years at PepsiCo, Nintendo and a couple Bay Area startups… and most recently combined my love of fitness and small business startup by opening StarCycle Danville.“ With a central downtown location, StarCycle has given Jenn the opportunity to become a physical part of the Danville landscape. The best thing about combining work and passion? The people, of course. “The fitness community you find, your tribe, are the people who will allow you to walk in to the cycle studio feeling however you feel that day. They will let you ride in quiet, they will let you share your joy and life struggles, they will be there to support YOU.” The Soine family would like to say “Thank you neighbors for welcoming us when we were new and without family in the area.

Our hope is we can pass on the same support to other new families as they move in to raise their families.” They have found that compassion is readily available, as well as a sense of pride in this town. “Our community is small but mighty, and I have found each person has an active voice in supporting each other’s families through success and tragedies, celebrations of our town and history,… our school system, and local school teachers/staff, small businesses, and overall morale.” For a family as busy as theirs, paring down their values helps keep focus on what is most important - “Our family lives by two simple mottos: Choose Joy and Assume Positive Intent.” Sounds like they make some great neighbors!

Do you know a neighbor who has a story to share? Nominate your neighbor to be featured in one of our upcoming issues! Contact us at asullivan@bestversionmedia.com.

KEEP PAYMENTS FROM RISING

If you want to get out from under high interest rate charges from credit cards, student loans, or other forms of debt, then a cash-out refinance might be the solution for you.

A great way to save money on your home loan is to refinance for a lower interest rate. Just a small drop in interest rate can lower your mortgage payment significantly.

Refinancing your home to take advantage of its equity can be a great way to get the funds you need for home improvements, retirement, vacations and more.

Do you plan to stay in your home for an extended period? If so, then refinancing to a fixed-rate mortgage is a great way to keep your payment from rising.

Designing Your Dream Home By Jim Long, S&J Properties, General Contractor, Resident since 1991

B

egin to sketch your ideas and make lists of features you want each room to have just get your ideas out of your head and onto paper. Even rough sketches can help your home design team understand what you want. Think about the future, do you have or plan on having children in the coming years? Do you have aging parents? If so, you’ll need to think about accommodating close family members in many different scenarios, such as returning college students, accommodating grandchildren and grandparents, taking care of elderly parents even accommodating extended family for holiday occasions. Likewise, if you’re hoping to transition from an office job to operating your own business out of your home, your custom home design should include an office or flexible space. Basically, when you think about the amenities in your custom home plan, you are deciding what kind of family you’d like to become. Include features your future self will find handy. Showcase and maximize your lot, oftentimes those who are in the market for a custom house plan already own the property where the home will be located. If you already know where your custom home will be situated, be sure to consider the topography, size and best features of the lot. For instance, if your lot overlooks a nature scape, you might choose to face the living room toward the feature so your family members can watch nature in action. Alternatively, if you have a brook or stream running through your property, you might choose to place bedrooms nearest the stream so you can enjoy the beautiful sound of running water while you sleep. In addition to thinking about which windows should face the home’s best views, you’ll want to consider whether the land is sloped. A custom home design for a steep slope will look very different than a design for a flat lot. Once your ideas are recorded in rough form, begin prioritizing features for your new house. A custom home design can easily exceed a budget if you let your fancies run wild. With so many luxuries to choose from, it’s important to prioritize the most important aspects of your design. As you and your designer begin playing around with where various rooms should be located, consider how your final design will flow and how your family might function in each space. For instance, to reduce noise in sleeping areas, it’s wise to place bedrooms away from the communal areas of the house.

Likewise, if you’re the kind of family that tends to gather around the kitchen, an open floor plan with easy flow between the living room, kitchen and dining area will suit you well. This kind of design also allows for excellent flow between rooms. Light has a powerful influence on humans. Light also figures into the placement of rooms in a custom home plan. As an example, if you want to enjoy natural morning light in your dining nook, it would be wise to face the nook east, where it will catch the morning sun. It’s also wise to think carefully about how electrical lights in your home will facilitate comfort. For instance, a custom home designer would suggest installing bright task lighting for kitchen countertops to facilitate food preparation. Lighting can also create a mood – for example, dimming sconces in the bedroom can create a sense of romance or peace. Meditating on the items listed above can help you create the home of your dreams. As you work with your home designer, take your time. Remember that it’s far easier to be upfront about what you do and do not like than it will be to remodel your custom home later. If you are thinking about designing your dream home, getting the help from a qualified professional design builder is worth the investment and long run value.

The Beauty of Boredom By Peggy Arman, The Dorris-Eaton School

“I

’m bored” is often accompanied by eye rolling and slumped posture, which sends many of today’s parents into “uberparent mode.” If kids are bored, soccer, piano, and Spanish may not be enough. Should an art class be added? With the best of intentions, many parents believe they should eliminate periods of time when their children aren’t feeling entertained or stimulated. However, when the majority of the day is choreographed by the adults, children miss valuable lessons and skills acquired from unscheduled time. Experiencing boredom and constructively responding to it sets realistic expectations for life, stimulates creativity, and cultivates self-reliance. In the 70’s and 80’s when a road trip didn’t entail downloading podcasts, movies, or games, siblings had to figure out how to fend off boredom. Discussions often centered around which radio station to listen to and what game to play. Territorial disputes - the comical “You’re on my side!” complaint - developed the ability to negotiate. For the most part, parents left children to settle their own quarrels, so they learned to work together and compromise. Trial and error allowed children to identify strategies that work, honing their powers of persuasion. Running out of things to do is also fertile ground to develop creativity and imagination. Unforeseen things happen when children experience monotony. Adding another class is not what’s needed, and parents aren’t neglecting their responsibilities by providing unstructured time. Boredom is useful. Eliminating the “noise” that comes from video games, television, and electronic devices opens a space for discovery. Building a fort, concocting something in the kitchen, or drawing may be how time is spent. When children are responsible for entertaining themselves--they day dream, create

stories, or invent. Great ideas, and some not so great, are born in quiet time. It’s the process that takes place that’s valuable. When everything isn’t exciting or it takes several attempts to make something work, children develop a realistic view of life. Parents know every aspect of their job isn’t entertaining, enriching, or stimulating. This is not to say a chosen occupation isn’t meaningful… every part of a career isn’t. There are mundane tasks to be done. When children have to struggle with disinterest, they come to the realization that not all parts of life are enjoyable. By providing times for children to grapple with humdrum activities and constructively cope, parents are countering the life their children see on Instagram or SnapChat, where life is portrayed as a series of good times. Raising children in this age of soccer moms, helicopter parents, tiger moms, and most recently, lawnmower parents, can make it difficult to determine how much parental involvement is best for children. Balancing the opportunities inherent in quality extra-curricular activities with the realities of daily living is the key. Providing down time for your children and having them responsible for tackling the possible dullness prepares them for life after they leave home. The beauty of boredom is the skills your children acquire as they work through tedium. Source: Pamela Paul’s New York Times article “Let Children Get Bored Again.”

Polachinta By Madison Farkas

These Hungarian-style crêpes are a quick and easy alternative to pancakes any day of the week. Ingredients • 2 eggs • 1/4 cup butter or margarine • 3/4 cup flour • 1 cup milk • 1 tsp baking powder • Pinch salt 1. In a mixing bowl, beat eggs and add melted butter. 2. Add flour and milk, then mix until combined. 3. Add baking powder and salt. Whisk until batter is smooth and free of lumps. It should have a thin consistency.

4. Grease a frying pan and bring it to medium heat. Using a

ladle, pour the batter into a pan (one ladle of batter makes one large crêpe). Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until surface starts to solidify and small air bubbles start to form. Flip and cook until both sides are light golden brown and crispy around the edges. 5. Transfer the crêpe to a plate. Roll it and serve with butter, syrup, powdered sugar, whipped cream or fresh fruit. Makes about 12 crepes. The batter will keep in the fridge overnight, but it may need to be thinned with a little milk.

Stay Diligent: Help Stop Drug Abuse by Disposing of Your Meds Correctly By Danville Police Department

P

rescription Drug Abuse is on the rise. Help curb access by safely disposing of medication.

Misuse of prescription drugs has several different meanings. It could mean taking the medication in a way or a dose other than prescribed. It could be taking someone else’s prescription, even for a legitimate medical reason. Or it could be taking medication to get high. In any case, misusing medication is not only illegal, but can be very dangerous or even fatal. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the most common medications misused include opioids (usually prescribed to treat pain), central nervous system depressants (often prescribed for anxiety or sleep disorders) and stimulants (prescribed to treat ADHD).

A DRESS CHANGE A Women's Upscale Cosignment clothier

Over the past 15 years, local emergency rooms have reported an influx in ER visits and overdose deaths caused by prescription drug abuse. Also, admission to treatment centers for addiction to prescription drugs has been steadily on the rise during that same time period. (National Institute on Drug Abuse). While there is much debate on what can be done to help prevent prescription drug misuse and who is ultimately responsible for making changes, one easy thing that you can do to protect your loved ones is properly dispose of unused, expired or unwanted medications.

Studio Retreat Ready to Celebrate

11th Anniversary with Master Classes in Acting and Playwriting By John Barry, Eugene O’Neill Foundation, Tao House

T

he 11th Studio Retreat is ready to roll at Danville’s Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site in June. This annual event enables high school students to hone their skills in acting and playwriting during ten days of intensive immersion in these disciplines. Sponsored by the Eugene O’Neill Foundation, Tao House, in partnership with the National Park Service, Studio Retreat is part of the Foundation’s mission of celebrating and promoting the visionary legacy of America’s foremost playwright and is recognized as a distinctive educational program that provides a thorough understanding of O’Neill’s important place in American drama. Maybe another great artist will emerge from the master classes offered in these disciplines. Workshops meet daily from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. In the Acting workshop, students work with industry veterans to learn

the foundations of acting techniques as taught at the college level. Participants gain insight into building characters, the importance of movement, and voice.

The Playwriting master class gives students the opportunity to develop an original ten-minute play, by learning from and collaborating with professional playwrights, actors, and stage directors. The two master classes take place during the first half of the 10-day program. In the second half, budding playwrights rehearse and stage their original works, which are performed by the acting students, culminating in a medley of plays for family and friends. “In conjunction with the National Park Service, the not-for-profit Eugene O’Neill Foundation inaugurated Studio Retreat in 2008 to allow creative, mature, committed students to take advantage of an intensive cultural and artistic immersion program,” said Valerie Cooper, the Foundation’s education programs coordinator. Since then, more than 250 students have participated in the program.

enrichment is the program’s location: the Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site, or Tao House, in the hills overlooking Danville. O’Neill resided at this beautiful location from 1937 to 1944. Inspired by these serene surroundings of quiet and natural beauty, the playwright created some of his most notable plays, including Long Day’s Journey Into Night and Moon for the Misbegotten. The Foundation hopes that Tao House and environs will infuse students with similar inspiration.

A Day of Drama (and Photography) A less intensive but equally valuable program at Tao House is Student Day 2019, going strong since 1991. This free one-day program, Saturday, March 23, 2019, features master classes in acting, playwriting, and photography. Students in acting class work with industry veterans to get a taste of professional acting techniques. Playwriting concentrates on play structure and character development. Photography students receive emphasis on shooting great pictures, rather than sitting in lectures.

through special funding from the Dean and Margaret Lesher Foundation and the Wood Family Foundation.

“The theme of Student Day is “Express Yourself,” said Cooper. “The program is designed for students who want to learn about theater and related arts or enhance their existing knowledge. What better place for such programs than the former home of Eugene O’Neill,” she continued, referring to both programs. Both are made possible

The Eugene O’Neill Foundation coordinates the student programs, in partnership with the National Park Service, which manages the historic Tao House site and provides transportation to and from Tao House. History and Traditions

How Danville Became a Town Built For Neighbors By Newell Arnerich, Resident since 2001

D

anville was established in 1858 with the naming of our town and the opening of its first post office. It was just two years after Danville opened the valley’s first and only cemetery. Our valley pioneers, the Woods, Baldwins, Hartzes, Sherburnes, Glasses, Bettencourts, Inmans and the Podvas were the first civic leaders of our great valley. Their vision started the first schools and churches in the area even leading to importing such notables as a young boy from Oakland, author and poet Bret Harte, to help tutor ranchers’ children. These were to be the beginnings of many ‘firsts’ in Danville. President Dwight. D. Eisenhower stated, on the eve of Danville’s 100-year anniversary, “...this fine residential community has prospered over the years, with a strong sense of tradition, of civic pride, and responsibility, Danville can enter its second century with confidence.” Education was also at the forefront of thought with this quote from The Valley Pioneer Centennial Edition September 4, 1958, “When and where the educational growth will end-the year 2058 may provide the answer, because as the saying goes, the first 100 years are the toughest.” It may be better stated that Danville’s history is based on leadership and community participation in deciding its future. The tradition of civic involvement in the Danville Grange, which began as a family farmers union, early school boards and other such civic functions laid the foundation which built Danville’s reputation for setting high standards and leading the way for the betterment of its community. Civic participation provides the basis to interact in a public forum style of self-government. Our community has been guided by citizens volunteering on civic facilities committees, downtown task forces, general plan task force committees, Parks Commission, Arts Commission, Planning Commission, Design Review Board and Heritage Resource Commission. The process to guide and make changes has been supported by electing civic leaders; councilmembers, supervisors, regional parks representatives and water board representatives. Local control over our community and its destiny has been the foundation of our town since its founding in 1858. Shortly after Danville residents voted to incorporate in 1982, Danville set out on a course to preserve and protect open space. Today, over 40% of the Town’s land area is comprised of open space and park land. The Town’s first General Plan, adopted in 1987, forecast that the Town would reach build out by 2005, with

a population of 43,000. As of 2018, Danville’s population stood at 43,355. Among the 22 cities that make up Contra Costa County and the Tri-Valley, Danville ranks 20th in population growth since 2000. Our population has grown approximately 90 people per year over the past 18 years, a total of 3.93% over eighteen years. In contrast, our neighboring cities, as well as the unincorporated areas that surround Danville, have grown at a much higher rate. For example, the Tri-Valley (San Ramon, Dublin, Pleasanton and Livermore) has added 100,000 new residents in the past 18 years and Contra Costa County over 250,000. The traffic congestion in our area is not from Danville residents - it comes from our neighboring cities and unincorporated county areas. Danville is very different because it was planned that way. We are constantly challenged by the State of California Legislature to increase our population. We are one of the few cities in the Bay area that cannot physically accommodate more housing. This is having two effects: 1. Our property values will continue to rise; 2. It will be more difficult for young families to afford our community. The Westside of Danville developed very differently than the Eastside due to its geography and other physical features that was not as suitable for farming. Other than the downtown housing on Hartz Avenue, the Westside developed the first housing tract areas. Cameo and Greenbrook soon followed the Westside in housing development. We are fortunate to have many differing neighborhoods built around open space, natural amenities, neighborhood schools, parks and a vast number of walking trails. The Westside interfaces daily with the Las Trampas open space with two types of foxes, coyotes and occasionally mountain lions roaming the streets and pathways. Danville is a special place that takes a constant oversight and vision to keep its small-town charm and outstanding quality of life. Danville started as a Township but had to incorporate in 1982 as the ‘City of Danville’ until a change shortly thereafter in the State Constitution to allow the word ‘City’ and ‘Town’ to be interchangeable. Thus, Danville quickly changed its name to the ‘Town of Danville’. The ‘Town of Danville’ name fits well as it really is who we are. See you around Town!

What to Look For in a Contractor’s Bid By Jon Lubrano, President, Atlantis Pools Inc.

L

et’s assume you need to hire a pool contractor for either a new pool installation or a major repair or renovation. You contacted a few local companies, and have received a few bids on the project. You will quickly notice that not all bids are created equal. There are a few red flags to look out for and a few things you should always expect to see when you receive an estimate for a project. When receiving a bid from a pool contractor, the first thing to look for is the description of the work to be done. You want an estimate that is very detailed and thorough so there are no misunderstandings. If you receive an estimate and the description of work is vague and open to interpretation, it’s a red flag. Next, the bid should be all-inclusive, meaning that the price on the estimate includes tax, labor and parts. The bid should not change because the contractor ran into “something unexpected.” If an estimate is created carefully there should be no hidden fees over the course of the job. The biggest red flag you can run into when collecting estimates from different companies, is receiving a bid much lower than the rest. Installing a pool is highly technical in nature. If you receive a low bid on your project, there is probably a misunderstanding somewhere. Either the scope of the work was not defined well, or misunderstood, or the products that are being sold are not comparable. It is not uncommon to go with the lowest bidder and then find “unexpected” increases in the price.

are backed by decades of experience. We offer a free estimate and diagnosis on all your pool needs. Please visit www. atlantispoolsdanville.com or email info@atlantispoolsdanville. com to schedule an inspection.

When hiring a contractor for a large project, make sure to do some investigating. Ask for their workers compensation or general liability insurance company, and then call that company to make sure the insurance is up to date. If the contractor doesn’t have valid insurance, the homeowner is responsible if something were to happen. Also, keep in mind that documents are easy to forge and some very shady contractors will produce fake documents. That’s why calling to verify the information is important. Also verify the contractor’s license. A licensed person has the required education, experience, insurance and qualifications to obtain a license. They must pass a competency examination before practicing. Licensed individuals are screened for prior criminal history and their license can be revoke if they are not living up to professional standards. Visit www.cslb.ca.gov to verify a license. Lastly on the list would be to make that the contractor will pull permits, the homeowner is the ultimate say on this, but this adds another layer of protection.

How to Create a Ring Stack By Steve Padis, Steve Padis Jewelry, Resident Since 1989

Stacking (or layering) rings is a beautiful jewelry trend. It’s not only a way to wear a variety of rings, but also a way to express yourself and remember meaningful milestones in your life.

What is ring stacking? Ring stacking (or layering) is a jewelry trend where you wear multiple rings on one or multiple fingers. Many ring stackers start off by adding anniversary rings to their engagement ring and wedding band. However, ring stacking doesn’t have to include wedding rings. How do I stack my rings? There are no rules when it comes to stacking rings. Here are some tips to get you started. Mix rings you already own with new rings you have your eye on. You don’t have to buy all new rings to create the perfect stack. Assess what you already own and which rings would complement each other when stacked.

remembering. Anniversaries, the birth of children, and the passing of a loved one are a few examples. Wearing a ring that symbolizes that life event is a daily reminder of the mark it made on your life. If you’re ready to shop for wedding bands and stacking rings, our non-commissioned jewelry experts are ready to guide you to the perfect choice! Get started by scheduling a visit to the Padis Jewelry showroom. Feel free to contact us at Padis Jewelry at concierge@padisjewelry.com.

Incorporate gemstones. If you’re into the gemstone look, stacking is a fun way to express it. Many people have a strong connection to their birthstone, and others identify with another gemstone like sapphire or ruby. Using a gemstone or two in your stack adds color and energy. Mix simple dainty bands with chunky diamond bands. Don’t worry if two rings aren’t perfectly stacked. Instead, the rings should have an overall cohesive look. Don’t be afraid to mix different metals and band widths. Stacking rose gold with yellow gold is perfectly acceptable. In fact, many ring stackers prefer the unmatched look. Same goes for band width.

Lyric Coloratura Soprano Private Voice Teacher Adjudicator, Recording Artist

How many fingers should I stack? It’s up to you how many fingers you want to use when ring stacking. As a general guideline, we recommend you either wear a couple of rings on multiple fingers, or multiple rings on one or two fingers. Both large and small stacks make a bold statement. Why is ring stacking a trend? Similar to the bracelet layering trend, ring stacking is a fashion trend. It’s a way to express your personal style through your love of diamonds and gemstones. Another reason women start stacking rings is to honor a milestone or occasion in their life. A wedding band is a representation of marriage, but there are so many more moments worth 26
