Meet the

Gordon Family: From Beach to Bay, and Around the World

A

s a flight attendant for a private airline, Patty Gordon spent her time flying the most interesting people and celebrities all around the world.

It was on a blind date at Billy’s, in Newport Beach, in 2003 however, that Patty met the person that would capture her heart, Bob Gordon Jr..

A year and a half later Patty and Bob entered wedded bliss. They lived in Huntington Beach, where Patty grew up. Bob is also a California native. He earned a degree in Business Administration and Marketing from San Diego State University in 1988.

From there, Bob continued on with his family’s business legacy as a 4th generation funeral industry leader. In 2017 Bob accepted the position of President and CEO for Cypress Lawn Cemetery Association in Colma, and that is what brought the entire family north to the East Bay. He recently began giving historical trolley tours of the older campus, “where stories are told of many Bay Area notables that helped form the Northern California we know today.”

The Gordon family is comprised of Bob and Patty, Zachary (26), Kenedi (21), Jackson (11), Payton Grace (8), and Mason (6). They also have a Persian cat named Peek-a-boo, and three Labrador Retrievers, Max, Bear, and Mason “The Dog”. How does a family end up with two “Masons”?

with our youngest son, Jackson asked if he could name him. He wanted to name him Mason... (Which is Patty’s grandfather’s name)..., but we also have Mason the dog who at this time was only 5. We thought about it and then agreed. So for the last 11 years we’ve had Mason the boy and Mason the dog!” Surely those two are best friends for life.

As a family, the Gordon’s love to travel.

They have been Disney Passholders for over a decade, and take every opportunity they can to travel back to SoCal. Last year the family went to Vail, Colorado, where the kids learned to ski for the first time.

With their love for international travel, Jackson was actually only 8 weeks old when he received his first passport, so that he could go to the Dominican Republic with his parents. Bob, Patty, and the kids also enjoy taking cruises and visiting Cabo annually. And to soak up a little taste of the East coast- they travel to New York City each November.

This year they have some amazing adventures planned. Aside from their spring break Caribbean cruise and their annual trips to Cabo and NYC, the Gordons are also visiting Maui, Waikiki, and Whistler, Canada. Bob says, “If you were to ask the kids what their favorite, most memorable, trip was, I think they would say cruising! They love it! It’s almost like their own private vacation away from us.”

Patty and Bob will be flying to China in May for two weeks for a funeral expo.

There they will tour granite and casket manufacturers with some other employees from Bob’s company. The kids will stay behind with Patty’s mother, Nancy, who also lives with them, “the kids love having their Nannie in the same house, and she provides much needed support for the kids and the household.”

Back on this side of the world, the three youngest kids keep Bob and Patty busy around town. Various sports, including lacrosse, flag football, gymnastics, and MAY 2019

baseball serve as weekly activities. They are also on the swim teams at Del Amigo Swim Club. Bob is an active outdoorsman, whose passions include wake-boarding, surfing, mountain biking, and skiing.

Patty loves being an at-home mom and volunteering in the kids’ classrooms as often as she can. This is the last year that all three kids will be at the same school! Aside from her volunteer work, Patty has spent the last five years working and promoting her own skin care business with Rodan + Fields. As a family, they enjoy meeting their friends once a month for dinner at the Blackhawk Country Club. You can find them attending Community Presbyterian Church and taking strolls down the Iron Horse Trail.

One of the greatest draws of their westside home was the accessibility to downtown.

As we all know, the Iron Horse Trail is not only a shortcut straight to the heart of our beloved Danville, but it is a perfect family activity in and of itself. After spending

the last two years here in Danville, the Gordon’s have grown a deep love for their new home - “We love the small town feel of Danville. We sometimes miss the beaches of Southern California, but we are beginning to love the seasons that we get in the East Bay. or many individuals, the first tax filing under the new federal tax law has proven to be confusing and in some cases, painful.

Here are a few potentially tax saving ideas to consider now in anticipation of next year’s tax filing.

Tax-free Municipal Bonds:

Municipal bonds issued by the state of California generate income exempt from federal tax and for California residents, state income tax. For a California resident in the highest federal income tax bracket of 37%, a municipal bond yielding 2.5% offers the same net return as a taxable investment, such as a corporate bond or CD, yielding 5.03%.

Long-term Gains:

Waiting a few extra days before selling any appreciated securities can make a significant difference in your taxes.

Profits on sales of securities held less than one year are taxed as ordinary income, which for an individual in the highest tax bracket, can be upwards of 37%. Gains on securities held for greater than one year are taxed at the federal capital gains rate of 20%.

Tax Deductible Retirement Contributions:

Maximize deductible contributions to any qualified accounts including company sponsored retirement plans, IRA’s and SEP’s. Doing so will lower your taxable earnings for the year.

mpending change often prompts gratitude for present comfort.

I have come to truly appreciate and admire the sublime beauty of the area in which we live. It is simply spectacular, particularly during this Spring season.

Spring is all about renewal. Life lightens as the land is washed over with a fresh, lighter complexion. It brings new existence and color after a lengthy rainy season. Birds sing varying melodies, adding to the tranquility. Their hymns signaling the dawn of a new day. The grass becomes a screaming bright green color, demanding to be cut on a regular basis. Blossoms grow rampant in numerous shades of soft and dazzling colors, overflowing the once barren trees with pristine buds. The flowing rivers and

A shot of the glorious views found on a spectacular hike What is the best way to embrace these hills? Hiking. There is more hiking than conceivable in and around Danville. The bulk of trails are in the Las Trampas Regional Wilderness with most featuring top-of-the-world type views along the way. My favorite trail is the Las Trampas Ridge Trail starting at the Remington Loop entrance off Remington Loop Road. The trail ends at Elworthy Ranch. On a clear day, one can see from Livermore all the way to Pleasant Hill. I absolutely love this hike in the west hills. Another one of my favorites is right behind Sycamore Park.

I have watched spectacular sunsets while hiking along the ridge on this trail. Also, if one deters from the path slightly to follow a narrower trail, there is a hidden swing amid a small grove of

trees. For those that want to venture out a little further for a more rigorous hike, the Lafayette Ridge Trail is a great one. In the hills around the reservoir, this 6.2-mile trail is a roller coaster of fun.

I am continually stunned to find new trails that reaffirm my love for this place. While some physical effort is required to hike, the views as one gains elevation cannot be replaced. Every trail is a new adventure. Even as the hills begin to turn their golden color in preparation for Summer, the hikes offer incredible glimpses of Mother Nature. So, breathe the fresh air, enjoy the pleasant sunshine, and accept Springâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s invitation to explore the hills. Above all else, be grateful for the now because change is always looming.

rom high tech to conventional occupations, it’s not surprising that being an effective communicator is consistently one of the top three skills employers seek in a candidate. Being able to listen to others, articulate thoughts, and express ideas in writing are invaluable skills which are not developed overnight.

Communication literacy is formed early and refined over time.

Self-expression blossoms when toddlers begin to acquire language and builds as they expand their vocabulary. When children possess the words that best describe their emotions and ideas, others can more easily understand them. Their capacity to communicate facilitates making friends and paves the way for harmonious play.

Enroll your three- and four-year-old in a preschool that focuses on vocabulary development to help children communicate. The preschool sandbox is the work place group project.

Follow quality preschool education with a K-5 language arts program that sets the stage for successful interpersonal interactions, delivers a solid writing curriculum, and provides ample opportunity to take center stage. Kindergarteners can learn to identify the audience, choose words carefully, and look peers in the eye to gauge whether the message is being well-received.

Elementary school is the perfect time to teach children to stand up straight, make eye contact, and speak with a loud, confident voice. Schools with strong language arts programs teach students to determine if a source is credible and how to logically sequence information. Utilizing an interesting opener, meaningful repetition, and salient data and examples are refined as students mature and develop their writing ability.

Junior high is when students can really find their voices and are able to digest constructive criticism to further explore and articulate their ideas. Assist your children by selecting a school with specific times set aside to teach grammar, writing, and literature; quality instruction in each subject enables students to learn and practice expressing themselves clearly and confidently.

Interdisciplinary units require students to transfer skills learned in one class to other classes. This creates multiple opportunities to practice and refine research, writing, and speaking skills. Look for schools with active debate teams and school-wide speech contests. Students have incentive to “step-up their game” when competition is involved. Listening to an opponent’s argument, reading their nonverbal communication, evaluating their stated facts, and finding a counter point all become “real” rather than academic. Students begin to view listening, speaking and writing expertise as important and powerful tools.

High School Prom, Still One of the Most Anticipated Nights for Students

O

n March 16th, San Ramon Valley High School students gathered at the Scottish Rite Center in Oakland to experience a “Midnight in Paris.” Students arrived at the center looking picture perfect, ready to embark on a new adventure. For decades, Prom has been considered a magical night for high school students, and SRVHS lived up to that reputation. Although I had never been to Prom before, tv shows and movies gave me a taste of what was coming. As the final countdown to Prom began, I started to imagine what the night would bring for my best friends and me. It was, however, the events leading up to Prom that would become the memories that would last with me forever.

Prom itself was a magical time, but I didn’t expect to enjoy the process of getting ready

for the dance as much as I did. Before that week, I thought the actual event would be the most thrilling, joyful aspect; however, the quality time I spent with my friends was far more special. In hopes to get as glamorous as we could, our prep started on Tuesday, with a trip to the nail salon. While selecting our nail colors, we eagerly chatted about how thrilled we were for the weekend ahead. We laughed and drank boba tea for the next hour, and it was at that time that I realized that these moments were important too! When my friends and I parted ways for the evening, we were filled with excitement and anticipation.

After countless amounts of tests and projects due, the Friday before Prom finally arrived.

On Saturday morning, I sat in the hair salon with my friends, where we recognized many

other Juniors participating in the same pre-dance rituals. The place was packed with girls with various hair styles, such as curls, braids, and up-do’s. Once our hair was done, my friends and I returned to my house to add the final touches. We began to apply makeup, laughing away our mistakes and attempts to fix our creations. Powder, eye shadow, and foundation stains covered the floor, but we continued to laugh and let our inner “beauty gurus” take the wheel. When we reached a place where we felt confident and beautiful, we slipped into our dresses. It was hot outside when we gathered to take group photos, but it gave us a wonderful chance to admire one another.

Since the dance was off-campus, we loaded onto buses at SRVHS to take us to the Scottish Rite Center. Once there, we were surrounded by our Junior class. The outfits we saw were so vibrant, original, and showcased everyone’s different personalities. It was a sea of colors. I was shocked at how large the Center was. I never thought that there would be activities other than what’s shown on tv - the usual dance floor surrounded by scattered tables. There was a large casino floor, chocolate fountain, photo booth, as well as a grand ballroom. My friends and I rotated between each room, trying to absorb as much as we could. I admit, we spent the majority of our time on the dance floor. We loved the variety of music the DJ showcased, as well as the electric lights that lit up the floor. Although I expected prom to be a little chaotic, I found it to be far more relaxed than other dances, allowing for easy conversations to be made amongst all my friends.

Now, after attending my first prom, I can say that it’s truly a night to remember. From getting ready with friends to the dance itself, it’s clear that the “real deal” quickly overrides the ideas that you get in films. Personally, the event was more of a social gathering filled with laughter, joy, and dancing, than a night of competition and stress. In some cases, the reputation of Prom has been a more of a popularity contest. However, at SRVHS, the event unites the Junior class and allows us to de-stress and enjoy one another’s company. In high school, all students should experience their Junior Prom, it’s not just a night, but a whole experience filled with endless laughter as well as possibilities.

Top Pool Safety Tips for the Summer Swim Season

ummer is almost upon us, which means it’s your pool’s busy season and a good time to brush up on pool safety. To maintain a fun and safe environment around your swimming pool, there are several basic pool safety tips I advise all pool owners to follow.

Make pool safety a priority in your backyard by following these guidelines: Have Compliant Drain Covers (VGB) Virginia Graeme Baker, after whom the Pool and Spa Safety Act is named, died from drowning due to a suction entrapment from a faulty drain cover. All pools and spas should have drain grates or covers that meet safety standards to avoid incidents like the one that took Graeme’s life. Powerful suction from a pool or spa drain can even trap an adult.

Safety Gates Secure your pool with appropriate barriers. Completely surround your pool with a fence or barrier with a self-closing, self-latching and outward facing gate. Place a safety cover on the pool or hot tub when not in use and remove any ladders or steps used for access. If you have small children, consider installing an alarm to alert you anytime anyone goes from the house to the backyard.

Consider a Poolguard® Safety Buoy Pool Alarm This is a pool alarm that meets county and city requirements for safety and is innovative in that it will alert you in your home, any time something substantial falls into your pool. It’s floats in your pool and is easier and more effective than many door alarms.

GFCI and Pool Lights The ground fault circuit interrupter, better known as the GFCI is a safety device used on installations with a higher than normal risk of electric shock. GFCI is a fast-acting circuit breaker designed to

shut off electric power in the event of a ground-fault within as little as 1/40 of a second. Pool lights need to be linked to the GFCI to prevent electrocution.

Learn CPR Ensure everyone in the home knows how to respond to aquatic emergencies by having appropriate safety equipment and taking water safety, first aid and CPR courses.

Keep All Glass Away from Your Pool This summer Atlantis Pools has had to drain three separate pools due to glass tables in backyards that broke resulting in glass in the pool. I can not stress enough how important it is to keep all glass out of your backyard if you have a pool.

his legendary car show event has been produced for 25 years, and this year will take place on two Sundays: July 21 and August 18. Show times for the public viewing are 11am until 4pm.

Admission to the general public is, as always, free!

The event will include an appearance by ABC Channel 7 news anchorman Dan Ashley, who will sing the National Anthem at 12 noon in the parking lot of Primo’s Pizza. He will also give out his Channel 7 ABC “Breaking News Award.” Don’t miss this chance to meet our local TV celebrity in person.

Everyone is invited to “Dancing in the streets” with DJ Dave on Hartz Ave., the fabulous voice of Tresena Griffon at Primo’s Pizza’s outside parking lot on Hartz Ave and Diablo Rd. On Prospect St., two world champion high-speed dragsters will be featured. Kids will be able to sit inside of a true racing powerhouse and be photographed by their parents or guardian.

About Rats

ats are incredibly hardy animals who have never shown any problem adjusting to change. Usually that change is the introduction of a new poison, as humans constantly work harder and harder to exterminate these animals. But perhaps no other animal resists such attempts better than the rat.

Rather than looking for more powerful and potentially dangerous ways to kill rats, the only real answer to people’s conflicts with these animals is to alter the habitats in which they choose to live to make them less attractive and acceptable.

Common conflicts and solutions Food: Rats will eat anything a human will, and more. But worse damage is done by their urine and feces, which are left behind on any uneaten food.

Burrows: Although rats may create damage with their burrowing, it’s usually more superficial than structural.

Chewing: Since their front teeth grow all their lives rats, chew on things to keep them worn down. This can be dangerous when they gnaw on electrical wiring.

Public Health: Rats can carry many diseases that are harmful to people.

Tolerance Tolerating rats is not something many people want to do. For many reasons people and rats are unlikely to coexist peacefully. But coexist we will, as perhaps more than any other wild animal, rats have adapted to living among humans. That we do not generally tolerate their presence does not mean that we need to use dangerous and inhumane methods to destroy them—or accept a no-holdsbarred way to controlling their numbers.

The best way to control rats is to discourage them from taking up residence in the first place. Typically, conditions that support high rat populations are left until there is a real crisis at hand. Then the poisons are used or trapping employed to reduce the population, only to leave unaddressed the cause of the problem in the first place.

Any effort to limit rat populations must be followed by taking the necessary steps—exclusion and sanitation—to make sure the same problems never happen again.

Identifying rat signs Inside • Gnawed holes up to two inches wide in baseboards or at doorframes (indicates they’ve been there a while).

• Smudge marks (body oils) on walls.

• Sounds of movement in walls and attics.

• The family pet staring intently at a blank wall.

Outside Burrows may indicate the presence of rats. To find out if the burrow is in current use, loosely fill it with soil or leaves and check it in a day or two to see if it has been reopened.

Keeping rats out Rats can enter buildings through many openings: • • •

Holes as small as 1 inch wide (about the size of a quarter).

Heating vents.

Gaps anywhere electrical conduits, utility or air conditioning lines, or water pipes enter a building.

Town of Danville Sponsors Second Annual Open Studios

ast year, Danville enjoyed the first Open Studios in several decades. 27 artists showed their work across Danville and over 1200 Danville and nearby residents enjoyed the opportunity to see a broad variety of outstanding art, much of it on sale.

This year, Open Studios will take place on May 11 and May 12 – Mother’s Day weekend. This will be an excellent opportunity for mothers and their families (and everyone else!) to wander around the neighborhoods in Danville at their leisure and see or buy from the very high standard of work to be presented. Each location will be clearly marked with a street side sign.

Tricia Grame is one of the featured artists that will be participating in Open Studios. She will be hosting a couple of other artists in her studio as well.

How Involved Parents are Helping Our Kids

Matt serves as President of the Montair Dads Club, while Stephen serves as Treasurer. They appreciate the role that Montair Elementary School plays in developing their children for the future. They know that Montair Elementary is not just a public school, but an integral part of the community.

appy to inform you that there are two new clubs on the westside. Both the Montair Dads Club and Montair Run Club are new organizations focused on enriching the lives of the kids that attend Montair Elementary School.

U.S. Department of Education, students with involved dads have higher rates of academic success, fewer problems with truancy, suspensions, and expulsions, increased self-esteem and self-confidence, and better child-father relationships.

Montair Dads Club

The Montair Dads Club meets on the second Monday of each month at Norm’s Place in Danville where the members discuss ideas and strategies for making a positive impact on the school. Their flagship event is the annual pancake breakfast where the dads prepare pancakes, fruit, sausage, and orange juice for several hundred attendees. Other on campus events have included donut day, interacting with the students during lunchtime activities, and participation in the Montair Run Club.

The Montair Dads Club is a Not-ForProfit Corporation formed in March 2018 by four dads with children at Montair Elementary School. What began with a few dads spending time with their children during their lunch hour has turned into a club with over 100 members and growing. The organization’s mission is to support the Montair Elementary School community through time, energy, effort, and financial resources in order to build stronger relationships with the students. According to research by the

Recently, the Montair Dads Club hosted an off-campus bocce event raising over $1,500 in donations. A portion of that money, along with plenty of human capital, was used to build a Kegerator which was gifted to the Monitor Education Foundation and later sold at their annual auction for $3,500.

Additionally, the Montair Dads Club supports the Montair Elementary PTA by helping with setup and tear down of its carnival and movie night.

The Dads Club also helps with beautification and maintenance at the school as well. Last year it funded and installed new hooks for the children’s coats and book bags. Although the Montair Dads Club is new to the scene, it has already made a considerable impact on the Montair Elementary School community

The Montair Run Club is an association that started in 2013, funded by the PTA, and now managed by the Montair Dads Club. The club meets before school each Wednesday at 7:30 am and encourages all fitness levels to come and join the fun.

The group has approximately 100 registered members who have run a combined total of 640 miles this year.

Parent volunteers use QR codes and an app to track laps, and students earn a charm for every five laps (equaling one mile), that are proudly displayed on a necklace. Students are recognized by their fellow classmates for high mileage achievements.

The Wednesday morning exercise is a great way to start the day. Occasionally the group will have “special guest runners.” This year Danville Police Chief Allan Shields joined the kids.

Both clubs have helped our community in special ways. Be sure to look out for future events hosted by the Montair Dads Club and honk the next time you see the Montair Run Club exercising before school!

Spring Asparagus and Onion Frittata

By Suzanne Jacobus, Resident since 1993 One of my favorite spring vegetables is asparagus. They are fresh at the markets right now. I bought these from the Danville Farmers’ Market here in town. This is a great recipe for brunch or lunch. I serve it with a fresh green salad or fresh fruit.

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • •

1 pound fresh asparagus 1 medium sized red onion 1 clove garlic 6 Jumbo sized eggs 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoons virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon butter 1 ½ cups grated Gruyere cheese Salt and Pepper Parsley for garnish

Directions:

Clean asparagus and break off tough ends by snapping where they break naturally Coarsely chop onion and garlic Warm olive oil and butter in 9 inch oven proof sauté pan Over medium heat, sauté asparagus, onion, and garlic for 8 to 10 minutes and add Worcestershire Salt and pepper for taste Crack and whip the eggs Pour over the top Add the cheese Cook for 8 to 10 minutes. I lift the eggs with a spatula so some of the moist top runs over to the edges and cooks. Cook until bottom

Finish off your frittata with some fresh parsley

is set and top still wet and moist.

Place under a broiler for 6 to 7 minutes until browned on top and mixture has set.

Cut into 4 serving and garnish with fresh parsley.

I like to serve with some coarsely ground mustard. Enjoy!

A Spring Break to Remember

F

or years, Community Presbyterian Church students and adults have spent their Spring Break bringing love and building hope with Amor Ministries (amor.org) just east of Tijuana, Mexico.

This year we had 250 students and 75 adults from around the greater Danville community build 16 homes in just under a week! This experience is truly life changing for all involved; it offers perspective and gratitude. Students walk up to a plot of dirt and after just four days, hand over keys to a new home. It is an incredibly sobering and emotional moment for many. Pastor Bill Haslim, the Director of Student Ministries at CPC, has brought thousands of students to Mexico in his 13 years of organizing this trip. He says that, “Our students loved the experience and their most common reactions have been unexpected observation of how happy, content and joyful the families they served were in spite of having so little.”

Some other experiences from the trip include:

“After a botched surgery left 66 year old Raymundo disabled, neighborhood junkies began shooting up their drugs on his property and eventually burned down his house. Raymundo’s 5 grandchildren were inside the house and although disabled, he rescued them all! We arrived to find him living in a windowless cinder block room, his grandchildren displaced, and his son had passed away. Ray was moved to tears and overcome with emotion at the end of our first work day when he saw the new solid foundation we had poured. He looked up to God and thanked him, with tears streaming down his face... it was quite a moment for our students to witness. Our students are brave, open hearted, extremely hardworking and have tons of fun to build with! What an honor it was to serve Raymundo and his family

Of 250 kids (8th-12th grade) volunteering this year, about 150 of them were returning from last year! For some of the high school seniors, this was their 5th trip. After a long day of working with no power tools, the students return to their camps to clean up and have a hot dinner. “Later in the evening the students all come together for a program with music and a message that reflects on what they’re doing from a faith perspective. After that they have some time in their tent groups to talk about their experiences, discuss the message of the night, ask questions, and just connect,

N

ostalgia is something that people rarely turn their nose up to. Who doesn’t have fond memories of curling up on the couch on a Sunday morning to read the funny papers in your pajamas?

For many, it’s the building blocks of a great childhood and answers the age old question “What did you do before the internet was around?” It is rare to see a comic strip classic brought to life.

However, thanks to the directorial stylings of Mike Kasin and The Village Theatre, the brilliant mind of Charles Schultz is making its way to Danville with this fun, family-friendly musical from 1967, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.

Mike Kasin is a familiar figure with the Village Theatre scene. He’s the brains behind Danville’s improv troupe, The Diablo Devils, he hosts the town’s annual variety show case, and most recently directed another play, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. His newest show, Charlie Brown, is a bright and vivid family centric musical that strikes all the right chords and has you leaving the theater with a full heart and all the warm fuzzies. “I love musicals,” Kasin proclaims. “And I wanted to do a show I could bring my nine-year-old to.”
