Jalada Mobile Literary and Arts Festival in Dar! A full day of literary events, hosted with Nafasi Art Space By Rebecca Corey

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Jalada Mobile Literary & Arts Festival isa a hybrid between a traditional place-based festival and a bus tour.â&#x20AC;?

ince it began at the beginning of March 2017, the tour has covered cover 5 countries (12 towns): Kenya (Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu, Mombasa), Uganda (Kampala, Kabale), DRC (Goma), Rwanda (Kigali) and Tanzania (Mwanza, Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar). The festival celebrates diversity and creates living connections between writers, artists, and diverse audiences in the big cities and small towns across East Africa. The Dar es Salaam leg of the festival was a full day of activities including discussions, readings, performances, masterclasses and workshops. This leg was co-produced by Nafasi Art Space in Mikocheni B, where all events took place.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The festival program featured the Jalada Masterclasses on Creative Writing & Travel Writing. The masterclass was facilitated by Amy Gigi Alexander, Writer of Panorama Journal of Intelligent Travel, and Richard Ali and Richard Oduor Oduku - both from Jalada Africa.â&#x20AC;?

The Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Poetry Workshop, to nurture talent among the young, was facilitated by Joanna Brown from Africa Writes (UK). Ten young students from the Dar International School came to learn about writing, and wrote poems based on artwork by Tanzanian artists Nicholas Calvin, Amani Abeid, Minzi Thobias, Lute Mwakisopile, and others. Nafasi Art Space also presented CHAP CHAP Narratives and Illustration to headline the afternoon - a Public Art Workshop, featuring the work of resident visual artists. The activity took place from 3-6pm, and was facilitated by Artist in Resident Delphine Buysse, and Nafasi artist member Cloud Chatanda.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The evening was graced by literary readings from writers from Jalada Africa, the Caine Prize, and Nafasi Art Space. Spoken word performance, by Kenyan DUWLVW DQG ÂżOPPDNHU 1JDUWLD DOVR lit up the evening with inspiring words spoken in both English, Swahili, and Sheng.â&#x20AC;?

“The annual Francophonie is a platform for the promotion of French cultural and linguistic diversity. The festival is a great way to learn about other cultures and explore the creative artistry of the many countries that speak French.”

Francophonie Festival 2017 had a special focus on conferences, movie screenings and concerts. The opening of the Francophonie Week took place at the Golden Tulip Hotel on Monday 20th March 2017. On opening night, the High Commission of Canada, presented The Mighty Popo who was accompanied by seven musicians.

Both of them share a similar creative sensitivity and the idea to work together on a same topic became evident. For this exhibition â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nostalgiaâ&#x20AC;?, both artists have been working about what the topic evocates, inspires them. Nostalgia is a sentimental affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations. A feeling of pleasure and also slight sadness â&#x20AC;&#x201D; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bittersweet emotion â&#x20AC;&#x201D; when you think about things that happened in the past. It is a desire to return in thought or in fact to a former time in one's life, to one's home or homeland. Nostalgia also reminds people that they are loved and valued by close others. It makes life seems more meaningful. This exhibition is the accomplishment of conceptual analysis and practical approach by the both artists, through mixed media, photographs and paintings. Open Stage at Goethe-Institut An interactive art performance By Daniel Sempeho â&#x20AC;&#x153;This open stage resulted in an album release by reggae artist Black Fit, a German tour and live show contract with an international hotel in Dar es Salaam for Christopher Kihwele, who sings Jazz tunes. The platform also established a band lead singer Upendo Manase, who is being sought to participate in live shows for cultural organizations.â&#x20AC;?

and examinations. At present, the Goethe-Institut operates 159 institutes in 98 countries, 12 of them in Germany. Open Stage is an event for emerging artists and musicians from Tanzania. The highlight display of the excavated Laetoli footprints of early humans was specially selected to push Tanzania’s Tourist Board agenda of promoting Tanzania as a historical site. Together with other wonderful Tanzanian tourism attractions such as Mt. Kilimanjaro, animal migration in Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro crater to mention only few, the hominin footprints and its unique history has impressed PRUH YLVLWRUV ZKR ÀRFN DW WKH Tanzania pavilion. While some artists have managed to establish themselves, many more hustle on a daily basis to be recognized for their unique talent. Dar Life caught up with the newly emerging artist Luba L. Roshchyna, who shared with us a bit about her history, what inspires her, and how she envisions the future of art in Tanzania.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;... we are all creators... we are all artists in a way....â&#x20AC;?

â&#x20AC;&#x153;

My artistic self expressions started early in my life, but not in the form of drawing or painting. I was always drawn to the beauty of jewellery, gemstones and fashion design. Music, poetry, creative writing and dance were also â&#x20AC;&#x153;my thingâ&#x20AC;?. So much to choose from! And so I tried everything I could get my mind and hands on. Until I met a beautiful family of gemstone experts and spent a decade working with them. This wonderful experience led me to take a jewellery design course with the Gemmological Institute of America, where I discovered that working with brushes and watercolours was actually very exciting. 22 countries later, eleven of which I lived in, I came across a wonderful Mauritian artist who took me under her wing and I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t looked back since. Painting has become a huge part of my life.â&#x20AC;?

Luba was born in Russia. She travelled extensively with her parents when she was little and then continued travelling around the world by herself, discovering new places and QHZ FXOWXUHV +HU ÂżUVW YLVLW WR Tanzania was in 2000, where she fell in love with the country and people. Since then this country became a home to her. Although travelling never stopped for her, every journey would bring her back to Tanzania. In 2016, Luba has discovered a passion for

painting. She would daily spend long hours self-educating herself on various techniques and media, and practicing. With a nudge from her Mauritian teacher she started participating in various international online contests for artists where her work would get into the top 20 participants and get good reviews and feedback. In -XO\ VKH KDG KHU ÂżUVW VROR exhibition in Zanzibar. Right now she is in the process of creating a series of paintings called â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Soul of Africaâ&#x20AC;?. This series is a tribute to the mysterious continent of Africa and its people that became home and family to her nearly two decades ago. It is inspired by the images of ancient Russian orthodox icons, textures of crumbling walls of Zanzibar Stone Town and bursts of colours of the surroundings. It is an intricate fusion of the modern times characters of this majestic land and emotions and visions that come over you when you connect to the very Soul of this place.

DL - What inspired you to start painting?

Luba â&#x20AC;&#x201C; It was a desire to express an overwhelming feeling of a loss, grief and hope that I was trying to

It was also a feeling of a massive relief and silence that I experienced when I tried my hand with the paints and canvas. DL - How long have you been an artist?

Luba â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Actually it is quite a recent thing for me. I started to paint exactly a year ago when I ran into a prominent Mauritian artist Gilberte Marimootoo Natchoo who invited me for an art therapy lesson at her home and started guiding me on daily basis while I was in Mauritius. Then I continued on my own. But she would always check on me and my progress.

DL - What mediums do you like to use?

Luba â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I love acrylics for their vibrancy and versatility. I used mixed media a lot: sand, coffee grinds, fabrics, etc â&#x20AC;&#x201C; all goes to add texture and energy to complex backgrounds.

Luba â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Oh, life! Life is a pretty beautiful experienceâ&#x20AC;Ś My main focus is to know my true self. There is nothing more important for me than that. And everything around me and within me supports me on this journey: the people I meet, the journeys I take, everything my eyes can see, what my heart and all my senses feel. I welcome all RI LW LQWR P\VHOI DQG WKHQ ÂżQG endless ways to express it.

DL - Where do you feel art is going?

DL - Do you prefer a perfect smooth technique or a more energetic expressive technique and why?

La Taperia. When I was taking breaks from painting process I would often go to this tapas bar to rest and socialize. I would often share news about my progress with the manager of the place. Eventually he suggested to exhibit my work at their small gallery place. I was thrilled, a bit scared and happy at the opportunity to make the next step in making my art known. It was a beautiful experience!

Luba â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Everything goes: slapping on, splashing colours, making grooves, combing, polishing, smoothing, exciting, calming. It all depends on the emotion, my own or the one I would like the viewer to experience.

DL - What do you think makes your work stand out?

DL - Do you work from life, or from photographs or from imagination?

Luba â&#x20AC;&#x201C; EVERYTHING! Photorealism requires me to have a good collection of high quality images which I make myself with all means available to me â&#x20AC;&#x201C; often my smartphone does a pretty good job! Then imagination comes into play for complex backgrounds and secondary images. Life is so full of colours, emotions and texturesâ&#x20AC;Ś It never seizes to inspire me.

DL - What moves you most in life, either to inspire or upset you?

Julitha Kabete is a Tanzanian beauty pageant title holder who was crowned Miss Dar City Centre 2016, Miss Ilala 2016 and was selected in the top 5 in the national Miss Tanzania pageant. She won the ﬁrst Miss Africa Tanzania in 2016-17.

er name is Julitha Kabete and she was born in Dodoma, the nation’s capital. She has two siblings and her family was mostly based in South Africa. She is currently studying at University level in South Africa but in 2016 she took a year off to follow her dream of modeling. She won three titles; Miss Dar City Centre 2016, Miss Ilala 2016 and the first Miss Africa Tanzania. Julitha describes herself as being very ambitious and is fond of traveling, reading and particularly is into sports. She started an environmental campaign, Mazingira Safi Campaign where she focuses on investing on the promotion of the better management of our environment and encouraging sustainable development. She wants to become a well-established environmental activist and advocate. We caught up with Julitha Kabete to find out more about her, her background and her future.

DL: How do you start off your days?

JK: The most essential part of starting my day, is praying. I believe we have our days planned out but God knows exactly what your day will look like so I take my time to pray my day goes as planned and full of success. DL: Did Competing for Miss Tanzania change your life in any signiﬁcant ways?

JK: Of course, there are some things that aren’t same. But one thing for sure, my goals and focus haven’t changed. Miss Tanzania competition lead me to be discovered, it’s the platform that if you use it to the great advantage of connecting and working with different people then I believe you will reach your destination of success in whatever you want to do. It’s all about your reputation and how you maintain your image. I believe that my journey just began. “In this generation, we are so consumed by things that are trivial and shouldn’t be central part of our lives. There are tremendous issues in the world that require our attention as much as we are attentive to social media and gossips. Climate Change, this is the talk everywhere in the world but people don’t show concerns at all. And I don’t blame most people, as there are many causes to that, there is lack of education in that area. My main aim as one of few environmental activists in Tanzania is to partake in activities and start a campaign that implements actions and education to stop the ongoing effects of climate change.” DL: You are quickly catapulted to fame, what is the biggest lesson you’ve learnt?

JK: I don’t think that it was such a sudden rise into fame, and weird fact I don’t think I am in fame or spotlight at all. But if referring to the rise of becoming and slowly progressing then I can say that 56 I Dar Life I APRIL 2017

DL: Who have you really enjoyed working with so far, and is there anyone out there you havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t worked with yet that would like to?

JK: I am very blessed to have such inspirational people to work with and be part of my growth on my movement to reach my goals. There is huge team that made a lot happen for me, really opened me to see my goals clear. I have absolutely enjoyed working with intriguing personalities like my lovely sister Millen Magese, Flaviana Matata, Loveness Hoyange, Anitha Moshi, Kebby Designs and Maktukio Chuma. DL: How do you keep yourself motivated to go on and keep turning it into something better?

JK: I will keep this short and lucid. Reminding myself my goals and where , ZDQW WR EH LQ VSHFLÂżF SHULRG LQ OLIH EXW focus is key. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am a strong believer in God. I believe that with his guidance, I will be a successful entrepreneur in the fashion and beauty industry, own brand.â&#x20AC;? DL: What charity projects would you like to pursue and why?

The main MDG that climate change hinders are eradicating extreme poverty and hunger and combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. DL: Tell us two things that we would be surprised to know/learn about you?

JK: I am very ambitious. Funny thing, I started writing my future and business plans from a very young age and one of them was to compete for Miss Tanzania and be my own brand in beauty and fashion industry. My parents never understood why but now they get the concept. I was such a serious child. JK: I love taking pictures and I am comfortable in my own skin. I am short to be a model, but I don’t take that as a weakness or disadvantage. I love that I can present the way I am. JK: My goal in anything I do is to simply never lose myself. In modeling industry, I want to portray an image that people can relate. I am naturally curvy, and short therefore I want women to feel that they can relate when looking at my images. DL: Any wise words for aspiring models?

Katavi National Park

Only a handful of adventurous souls ever make it to Katavi. Those who do are treated to a mesmerizing experience. Tanzania’s third largest national park, Katavi is a legendary wilderness: remote, free and undisturbed. The sheer number of animals on show is mindboggling, in quantity and variety.

Katavi is one of the few parks with the highest biodiversity in Africa. Your view changes from seasonally flooded grassland plains to the steep escarpments of the Rukwa Rift Valley. Yet the park is dominated by miombo savannah in its purest form. The large herds of antelope feel particularly at home; even the more elusive species. Katavi is one of only two parks home to both sable and roan antelope; the latter easier to spot than anywhere else. If you’re looking for the ultimate spot to tick your game-viewing boxes, head straight to the Katuma River and her floodplains, including the seasonal Lakes Katavi and Chada. Their appearance differs greatly between the wet and dry season. During the rains the grass grows up meters into the air, turning the barren grounds into seemingly endless green sheets. Waterbirds appear in abundance alongside the lakes. But it’s during the dry season that game-viewing becomes truly overwhelming. The drier it gets, the more animals find their way to Katavi’s remaining sources of drinking water.

Buffalo, elephant and zebra are the most abundant. Each population boasts thousands and thousands of individuals; herds of buffalo often triple the size one would ﬁnd in the Serengeti. Add to that a great number of giraffe and other large mammals. All of them on the lookout for roaming lion prides, spotted hyena, cheetah, leopards and wild dog, excitedly working up an appetite all round them.

The remoteness means animals aren’t so used to humans and vehicles as they might be in more popular national parks. Katavi offers you a real sense of venturing into the wild, making the park even more special. Katavi National Park was established in 1974, but doubled its size in 1997 to 4,471 km2, becoming Tanzania’s third largest national park. • The Rukwa Game Reserve (4,000 km2) borders Katavi, together forming the Katavi-Rukwa eco-system. • From northwest to southeast it stretches 125 km2. • Height: in general no higher than 960 m.

• The average temperature is 22-26 °C: 24-30 °C during the day (up to 40 °C at the end of the dry season), 16-18 °C during the night. • Dry season: June – October, wet season: November – May (less rainy in January – February and the only period in the rainy season in which all park roads might be passable). • Best time to visit: May to October. • Katavi is accessible by road or air. • By road, from Dar Es Salaam to Tunduma 980 km on good tarmac road followed by 435 km to Sitalike on rough road. • By air, several companies organize private ﬂights to either Mpanda airport or air strips at Sitalike or Ikuu inside the park.

owhere else in Africa does such a varied cast of animals gather to graze, live, hunt and die. On one of Ngorongoro’s Crater you will encounter some of the 30,000 animals in the crater’s diverse range of habitats: swampy wetlands, open savannah, woodland and lake - all within the steep rock walls that climb through thick forest some 600m to the rim. The Ngorongoro Crater, one of the eighth wonder of the world, is set in northern Tanzania, sharing part of the Serengeti plains to the north-west and with the towns of Arusha, Moshi

and Mount Kilimanjaro, to the east, and forms part of the unique Serengeti ecosystem. A major ecological survey of the Serengeti Reserve (which at the time included the Ngorongoro) by Dr. Bernhard Grizmek and his late son in the 1950’s resulted in the establishment of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in 1959. At the moment the conservation area is administered by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, an arm of the Tanzanian government, and its boundaries follow the boundary of the Ngorongoro Division of Ngorongoro District. It has also been believed to have been taller than the famous

Kilimanjaro before its inactive volcano collapsed and formed unbroken caldera crater 610 meters deep, 13 mile (20km) wide about two million years ago. The conservation area covers about 3185 sq miles (8250 sq km), the crater covers about 100 sq miles (260 sq km). It is also home to over 3000 different species including the endangered black rhinoceros; the crater has a forest and lake which support ecosystem in the park. Ngorongoro crater has been listed by UNESCO as world heritage site. On Ngorongoro conservation area is where the world famous archaeological

site of Oldupai George is allocated. The discoveries of fossil footprints on lava rock as well as ancestral humans remain which are believed to be 3.8 million years old can be seen at the museum. Two main geological rifts run through the Ngorongoro area. Nine volcanoes in the Ngorongoro highlands were formed during the past four million years. One of these, Oldonyo Lengai (Mountain of God) is still active. Over millennia the ash and dust from each eruption has been carried by the winds to form the fertile soils of the Serengeti Plains.

The earliest sign of mankind in the Ngorongoro is at Laetoli, where hominid footprints are preserved in volcanic rock 3.6 million years ago. Further north on the tourism circuit, Olduvai Gorge has yielded a wealth of hominid and animal remains.

Imprints of these are displayed in the Olduvai museum. More advanced descendants of Laetoli’s hominids were found further north, buried in the layers of the I00 metres deep Olduvai Gorge. Excavations, mainly by the archaeologists, Louis and Mary Leakey, yielded four different kinds of hominid, showing a gradual increase in brain size and in the complexity of their stone tools.The first skull of Zinjanthropus commonly known as ‘Nutcracker Man’, who lived about 1.7 million years ago, were found here. The excavation sites have been preserved for the public viewing and word continues during the dry season, coordinated by the Tanzania governments department of antiquities.

About 200 years ago, the Maasai arrived and have since colonized the area in substantial numbers with their traditional way of life allowing them to live in harmony with the wildlife and the environment. The Maasai are allowed to take their animals into the Ngorongoro Crater for water and grazing but not to live or cultivate there. Elsewhere in the Ngorongoro, they have the right to roam freely. Visitors normally stop the Masaai cultural homestead, one on the road to the Serengeti National Park and another close to the Serengeti Sopa Lodge at the Irkeepusi Village.

Lions in particular are abundant in the Ngorongoro Crater. Thanks to the anti poaching patrols, the black rhino in the Ngorongoro Crater are relatively safe and the numbers are increasing with time. Travel tips

Language Swahili is the National language of Tanzania, however English is widely spoken, but learning a few words of Swahili can be useful and will be appreciated greatly by the local people.

Currency Tanzanian shilling (Tsh/Tzs) divided into 100 cents. Major foreign currencies â&#x20AC;&#x201C; such as US$, Euro and travellers cheques are accepted and are convertible at banks and Forex bureaus in the main towns and tourist areas. Apart from most high-end lodges, credit cards are not widely accepted. Some banks in major cities offer ATM for credit/debit cards. Parks fees are payable using special TANAPA cards available at local CRDB & Ezim bank. Alternatively payment by Mastercard & Visa card are accepted. Avoid changing money in the street.

Health Yellow fever vaccination is required if travelling from susceptible countries. Malaria is endemic but is preventable: use insect repellant, cover up at sundown, sleep under a mosquito net and take anti-malaria prophylactics as advised by your doctor. Generally dry and hot with cool nights/mornings in June – October; short rains from November to mid-December and long rains March – May, but the seasons can vary. The coastal strip is hot and humid all year round. Temperatures on Mount Kilimanjaro and Meru drop to below freezing.

Car hire

Pack lightweight, washable clothes plus a sweater for early morning game drives, as well as a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Long sleeves and trousers in light-coloured fabrics help discourage insect bites. Shorts for women are acceptable. Women should carry a wrap to cover legs in the villages and towns as revealing clothes can cause offence, especially in Zanzibar and Muslim areas. On the beach and within the conﬁnes of beach hotels normal swimwear is acceptable. If you have plans to climb Kilimanjaro or Meru, bring thermal underwear, light layers, a sweater, rain jacket, proper socks and sturdy boots.

Self-drive vehicles are available mainly for local errands or tarmac use. 4x4 vehicles for safaris usually have to be hired with a driver.

On safari Distances in Tanzania are vast and travel by road can be wearing. Plan to spend more time in fewer parks. You’ll see more and won’t return home exhausted. Keep your distance from animals and be quiet to avoid distressing the wildlife. Follow instructions of rangers or guides. Don’t leave your vehicle in the parks except in designated places. Keep to recognised tracks to avoid damaging vegetation.

Photography Protect your camera from dust and keep equipment and ﬁlm cool. It is courteous to ask permission before photographing local people. If you intend to take a lot of people pictures, please bring an instant printer with you so that you can leave a picture with the people you photograph.

Cuissine Local and international cuissine are served in hotels and lodges.

Driving People drive on the left side of the road. An international licence is required. Plan long safaris carefully, ensuring your vehicle is road worthy. Please bring two spare tyres, an operational jack and tool kit. Carry extra fuel, spares and water.

Travel with children Tanzanians love children and are especially helpful to mothers. However, canned baby food, powdered milk and disposable nappies may not be available outside major towns.

Security Tanzania is a generally safe country, but do use common sense. Keep an eye on your belongings. Don’t walk in the towns or cities at night – take a taxi instead. Don’t carry cameras or large amounts of cash and beware of pickpockets. Use hotel safety deposit boxes to safeguard valuables and obtain a receipt. Leave valuable jewellery at home.
