DAR ES SALAAM CITY

Dar es Salaam is set to transform into a round-the-clock business hub, with plans to launch 24-hour operations across key sectors of the city. The initiative, announced by Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila, aims to formalise the informal sector, create opportunities for unemployed youth, and boost economic activity. Speaking at the Taxpayers’ Appreciation Awards on 24 January 2025, Chalamila highlighted that preparations are underway, including the installation of CCTV cameras at strategic locations like Kariakoo to enhance security. This landmark development is anticipated to benefit both residents and visitors by increasing access to goods and services at all hours. The move aligns with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision of modernising urban centres, starting with extended business operations at the soon-to-be-completed Kariakoo Market. Once implemented, the 24-hour initiative is expected to revitalise Dar es Salaam as a vibrant commercial hub, attract regional investors, and position the city as a key destination for business, tourism, and economic growth in East Africa.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day in a New Way this Year

Celebrate Valentine’s Day in a New Way this Year

“To love is nothing. To be loved is something. But to love and be loved, that’s everything.”
T.Tolis

The more we love, the deeper our understanding of life will be. In the midst of all of life’s challenges and complications, love stops us in our tracks and changes everything. The power of love is something we should celebrate every day, but Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to be reminded of how special the people we love truly are.

In honor of this annual holiday, Dar Life brings to you some ideas for how to celebrate the occasion, whether you’re single, dating, or have been married for years.

• Buy some roses – give them away or use them to freshen up your living space and remind yourself how much you are loved.

• Make a homemade card for someone.

• Take a weekend trip to Arusha, Zanzibar, Mwanza or Bagamoyo. If you can’t afford to travel, try a “staycation”. Book a hotel room in your city for a night or two, turn off your phone and laptop, and enjoy complete relaxation with your loved ones.

• Have a classic movie date at the theater with friends and/or your partner. Or set up a drive-in at home, complete with a projector and snacks.

• Look for restaurants with Valentine’s Day specials, get all dressed up, and enjoy a special dinner with friends or your partner.

• Cook dinner for your partner or your friends at home. Go all out with a fancy outfit and festive music and decorations.

• Go to a concert or take dance classes with loved ones.

• Surprise someone you love with a gift that they really need or want.

• Alone? Show yourself some love! Who says that people need a companion for this one day of the year? Treat yourself to a spa visit, a nice meal, or some new perfume.

• On small pieces of paper, write down every kind of kiss that you can think of (examples: passionate, on the cheek, etc.). Then fill an inexpensive red felt bag with your “kisses” and give it to your partner.

• Order food from a take-out restaurant and have a picnic for all the Valentines in your family on your living room floor.

• If you are separated across the miles, send a care package filled with things that are red.

• Say “I love you” a lot, and mean it!

Exploring Zanzibar at its fullest with Maru Maru hospitality

On the historic island of Zanzibar, amidst the quaint, narrow alleys of Stone Town is Maru Maru Hotel, once a townhouse now boasts 51 well-laid rooms.

Maru Maru Hotel consists of two wings – the Classic Wing with 11 rooms, which have undergone restoration, and the New Wing with 33 modern rooms built around a small courtyard with a star-shaped fountain. The courtyard is ideal for spending time quietly reading, the noise of the water in the fountain a soothing backdrop. On the way to the courtyard, there is a coffee shop which also serves freshly baked pastries and cakes just in case you want to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea whilst rewinding.

The rooms are well equipped with modern amenities, a comfortable bed in Zanzibari style, swathed in a mosquito net, which is not only essential but also creates a romantic atmosphere with the stained-

glass shades.

An elevator connects both wings to the rooftop terrace, which is a delightful place to be, largely because of the stunning view of the ocean, so you can witness the gentle traffic of dhows, a vista that’s barely changed in generations.

Climbing the flight of wooden stairs leading to the terrace restaurant and reflecting on the hotel’s personality, it’s evident why Maru Maru has been the

preferred property for eminent personalities like Bill Clinton and his daughter, Chelsea. And it wasn’t just the atmosphere that struck me, the scent of the place did too: the hotel smells wonderful as day-long diffusers burn perfumed essential oils.

Maru Maru serves a delightful variety of cuisines, especially Continental and Asian – quality is great and portions are generous. I especially loved the way an array of sauces was offered which you could blend with the main ingredient – poultry, meat, seafood or vegetables.

All the staff right - from the General Manager, receptionist, chefs –lead and supporting roles were super friendly and helpful. Services and requests were promptly addressed.

So, if you’re after an affordable Stone Town break – Maru Maru is a great option and delivers the perfect launch pad from where to explore this historic little place.

Rufiji River Camp

An Adventures Safari Experience

Rufiji River Camp enjoys an enviable location high up on the banks of the Great Rufiji River. Spectacular sunsets are chorused by hippos grunting and a plethora of bird songs. Selous Game Reserve is dominated by the Great and Sprawling Rufiji River, so what better place to stay than right along the banks.

Rufiji River camp is one of the oldest and the first camp established in Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous), owned and run by the Foxes family. Located on the banks of the Rufiji River, inside the Nyerere (formerly Selous Game Reserve close to Mtemere entry gate and the airstrip, about 280 km or 6 hour’s drive from Dar es Salaam via Kibiti; access via Morogoro, Uluguru Mountains and Matambwe gate will take about 11 hours by road.

Carbon-neutral sister airline, Safari Air Link has twice daily flights in the morning and afternoon to and from various airstrips across Nyerere National Park. This schedule allows for onward connections out of Dar es Salaam and onward to southern and northern national parks across Tanzania. Flights from Dar es Salaam are 45 minutes and Rufiji River Camp

Imagine Tanzania a country by the great Indian Ocean, and the largest lake in Africa, the country prides in a number of water sport activities among which are some of the finest diving spots in the world on freshwater-lakes and the ocean, boat trips, yacht trips, snorkelling, white-water rafting among others

is located a short distance from Mtemere airstrip.

At the heart of Rufiji River Camp is a large central area with wonderful views over the Rufiji River. The

lounge and small library, bar and dining area are all under one high thatched roof with lovely stone floors and comfortable soft furnishings. A few old board games are dotted around for playing before or after dinner. There’s a second floor to this area too, providing more seclusion and good spots for taking in the scene. The whole area has a rustic African feel to it, with thatched roofs, stone floors and the occasional piece of carved furniture.

Outside, some simple wooden seating is set around a campfire, and set a little further back from the river is Rufiji’s shaded swimming pool, which stays very cool in the heat of the day. There are loungers around the pool for those wishing to relax and sunbathe in between safari activities.

ACCOMMODATION

The Fox family rebuilt and renovated the camp in 2010 to set it further back inland to protect it from the might of the Rufiji River during El Niño and the rainy season. The classic tents at Rufiji River Camp are designed with comfort and game viewing in mind. They are set beneath thatched roofs with spacious verandas that overlook the Rufiji River. For those looking for a more luxurious experience, the three larger suites feature two large tents each on a shared wooden platform with a private plunge pool and open-air living spaces, making it ideal for families or groups. The adventurous at heart can book a fly camping experience where a mobile tented camp with cold bucket showers is set up within driving range of Rufiji River Camp, complete with a private guide, tracker, chef and vehicle which allows for exploration of the seasonal lakes further afield.

DINE & WINE

With the focus on the river views and wildlife, the restaurant and bar are built to reflect this. Al fresco dining lit by star light, private dinners along the river bank or that end of the evening coffee sipped from the depth of a sofa in the upper-level coffee lounge - it can be difficult to choose!

LIFE IN CAMP

The focus of the owner is to provide the guests with an ‘off the beaten track’, immersive wildlife experience.

The remoteness of the camps and lodges is a big part of achieving this goal. This means some elements of everyday Life in the African Bush will be different from what you are used to at home.

One of the marvels of Rufiji River Camp is the wildlife that roams around camp, meaning your safari doesn’t end after a game drive. For safety, Maasai guides must be requested to escort our guests between their rooms and other camp areas.

To get truly off the grid, combine your stay at Rufiji River Camp with an adventurous night or two at one of Rufiji’s remote fly camps, where you’ll enjoy a private camping experience in a simple, mobile camp with very little between you and the wilderness.

ACTIVITIES

The Camp offers a wide range of activities to the guests that makes it more reliable and unique. Its strategic location favours more activities the guests can do like:

Game Drives: All game drives are taken in open vehicles with a sunshade roof, so there are no impediments to anyone’s view. Guides at Rufiji are locally trained and are experts in the Selous area.

Game Walks: A game walk at Rufiji will really open your eyes to the finer details often missed on game drives - the spore, footprints, the ‹little five› representing the insect Kingdom are fascinating when evaluated and explained by your Walking guide.

Boating Safaris: Boating safaris in flat bottomed boats are perhaps the most relaxing way to game view. Sharing the river with pods of hippo and floats of crocodiles giving you the opportunity to view birds nesting in the banks, monitor lizards and many water birds are just some of the highlights.

PLAN WITH US

Foxes Safari Camps offers a threenight, fly-in safari from Zanzibar to Nyerere National Park. Or perhaps you’d prefer to explore Tanzania’s mighty rivers during a sevennight itinerary between Nyerere National Park and Ruaha National Park, starting from Dar es Salaam. Meanwhile, our 10-day Tanzania Safari Explorer itinerary is geared to travellers wanting to experience three regions during a longer trip.

You won’t be disappointed staying at the lovely Rufiji River Camp. The Camp promises a relaxing and unique experience and the stunning scenery and wildlife in the park, we wish our stay would last forever!

Tanzania is one of the best tourists’ destinations in Africa. It has numerous must-see places that visitors love to explore. At one end, there is exotic adventure hidden in exploring wildlife, while there

Island, known as the best diving site, where you can

enjoy activities like scuba diving and snorkeling. In order to add to the comfort level of visitors, there are numerous tailor-made safari Ideas based on your needs.

CAMPING

Camping charms up many different images for different people – memories of scout and guide camps as a youth or perhaps family camping trips – but for the purposes of describing the safaris offered by TATO members, we have divided camping into four categories:

BUDGET CAMPING

Budget camping involves traveling with all your camp equipment, your guide and possibly a cook in your vehicle with you. Once you get to camp, everyone helps to cook and set up. This is economical and fun,

but it means that you will spend valuable time in the evening organizing your camp and food, when you could be out on game drives. These services typically use the less expensive shared or public campsites, but exclusive camps, or campsites with shower and toilet facilities outside the parks can also be booked and used. Beds are

of a small tent.

FLY CAMPING

Fly camping involves setting up small, temporary camps for a night under the stars, more often than not, in a remote part of the bush. Fly camps are the ideal end to a day’s walking safari or game drive, with many unexpected comforts –a canvas washbasin with hot water, fresh towels, hurricane lamps and delicious food

Just For You

sensation of sleeping in a light tent or just under a mosquito net, as the moon shines down and the noises of the African night begin, is the highlight of any safari holiday.

LIGHTWEIGHT LUXURY CAMPING

Like the luxury camps, tents will have metal or wood-frame beds, standing headroom, a veranda and small en-suite toilets and hot showers. However, the tents will be smaller and may be the traditional ‘A’ shape with a central ridge pole. The camps are fully staffed and meals will be three course affairs, served by a waiter in a lantern lit mess tent, or on a table under the stars. Pick-up trucks, rather than lorries, often move these camps, so they don’t have luxuries such as a deep freeze. There will usually be wine,

beer and soda on ice, in camp. Lightweight camps like this can be moved overnight and offer an amazing degree of comfort

of a lighter camp.

LUXURY CAMPING

Imagine feather pillows, soft towels, gin and tonic and four course gourmet meals in a candlelit dining tent, as far from the hustle bustle of modern life as you can get. This is what luxury camping is all about. The tents are roomy and comfortable, with a veranda in front and a bathroom with hotwater shower, washbasin and toilet directly behind the tent. The luxury tents have a bedside table, gas or solar lamps, chairs and a wardrobe for your clothing. A deep freeze will supply your drinks with ice and keep specialty food items fresh. Laundry is done daily. A

large staff will ensure that your meals are gourmet and all your needs in camp are met. Luxury camps are often situated so that you can enjoy the same area for several days.

WALKING SAFARIS

To walk through the African bush is to experience Africa close-up. Smells are suddenly subtle and varied and every and studied, not simply rushed past in the race for the bigger game. And when the larger animals appear, they are met at eye level, standing on the same earth. Safety is not an issue –armed, experienced guides and game rangers accompany all walks. Your camp is packed up and transported to the next location by different methods: pickup truck, porters or donkeys.

The camping style tends to be lightweight and extremely mobile. You will walk for several days, traveling like nomads across the African bush often miles from any roads or tracks.

EQUESTRIAN SAFARIS (HORSE SAFARIS)

Tanzania has few operators that offer horseback safaris, unlike anything else in Africa. Galloping alongside a herd of zebra or wildebeest as they race across the open plains is a lifelong dream for many riders around the world. Tanzania’s horse safaris offer the chance to make the dream a reality with well-bred, wellschooled mounts, professional equipment and the luxury of miles of countryside. The wild animals are not afraid of horses in the same way that they are of cars or pedestrians, allowing you to get much closer than usual. You must be an accomplished rider if you wish to go on a horse safari as these expeditions will take you into the wilderness, riding in the same terrain as the wild animals. You will ride daily, your ‘game drives’ on horseback. The camp can be in situ for several days or can move daily by truck. The types of camps that accompany these safaris

vary from lightweight luxury to luxury.

CULTURAL SAFARIS

A cultural safari consists of several days staying in local guesthouses, eating local ethnic food and absorbing the culture of the people who have lived in the area for years. Each day is usually spent trekking

and visiting farms, houses and local projects. All meals will be in small restaurants and your nights spent in clean but simple local guesthouses.

WEDDING SAFARIS

Begin your big day with a game drive or walking safari, arrive at the altar on horseback and get married with Mt Kilimanjaro

in the background and local Maasai as witnesses. The choices are endless and there are many companies who are happy to work through the plentiful African red tape, to ensure you have an unforgettable wedding day –and legally binding marriage.

BLUE SAFARIS

The blue safari, a safari on water, is by no means a new concept, but it is one that has blossomed all over Tanzania in recent years. From the rivers and lakes of Tanzania biggest reserves, to the turquoise systems, visitors can relax while viewing both land and marine life, from elephants to whales, buffalos to dolphins. A blue safari can offer the most relaxing game viewing possible.

With our ideas of Tailor-Made Safaris, we believe that your dream to explore Tanzania will be accomplished with unforgettable and memorable moments. You can travel where you want, when you want and how you want with these selftailored safari ideas, exclusively for Dar Life readers!
