Vibrant Celebration of the Arts in Zanzibar!

J

ahazi Jazz and Literary Festival is now in its fourth season since its inception in 2011. The Festival’s organizers are more determined than ever before to reach the public. They hope that the Festival will continue to be a cultural medium to raise awareness and lead the general conscience to the essence of aesthetics. “Inspiring learning through literature and music is a cornerstone for Jahazi Festival, but turning Zanzibar

14 I Dar Life I August 2014

By Sara Maro into the Mecca of art, music and literature is the truest of its good intentions. As the co-founder of Jahazi, Abeid Amani, questions, “Does it get any better than Zanzibar?” He is frequently heard repeating the mantra that “Zanzibar believes in anyone who believes in her.” Jahazi 2014 is set to be even more colorful and exciting as previous editions, with a special showcase of male artists leading their bands. The Malian musician, arranger

and composer, Cheick Tidiane Seck, will be amongst the exceptional artists performing this year. He has written for and played with world-famous African bands (Fela Kuti, Mory Kanté, Salif Keita, Youssou N’Dour) as well as jazz bands (Hank Jones, Dee Dee Bridgewater) and pop musician Damon Albarn (Rocket Juice & the Moon). Alongside Seck, the other famous artist performing is Moussa Diallo, a fantastic bass player, singer, composer and story teller. Diallo has in recent

years released a number of albums and volunteered with children in Africa. Beyond the music performances, the literature genre will also be wellrepresented by famous authors. Perhaps most prominent among them will be Shereen El Feki, a writer, broadcaster and academic. El Feki is an expert on sexuality in the Arab region, and recently published her book Sex and the Citadel: Intimate Life in a Changing Arab World (Random House 2013). At TEDGlobal

University, Shereen El Feki shows how some Arab cultures are borrowing trademarks of Western pop culture — music videos, comics, even Barbie — and adding a culturally appropriate twist. The hybridized media shows how combinding two civilizations, rather than dividing, can dovetail. Alongside El Feki, Dr. Sheila Ochugboju and Dr. Gus CaselyHayford will be present to represent the literary world. Dr. Sheila Ochugboju self identifies as a “Creative Scientist”, and

for good reason. She has a Ph.D in Biochemistry from London University and was a Daphne Jackson Trust PostDoctoral Research Fellow at St. Hilda’s College, Oxford, where her work at the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology focused on genetic virology. She was trained as a “Creative Agent” by the Arts Council England, through the Creative Partnerships Programme. She is also a co-founder of Africaknows, a media consultancy associated with Pamoja Media East Africa. Her debut as an actress began as a August 2014 I Dar Life I 15

Dr. Gus Casely-Hayford is well known for his major BBC TV series The Lost Kingdoms of Africa. Former Executive Director of Arts Strategy, Arts Council England, and Ex-Director of the Institute of International Contemporary Art, Gus has offered leadership to some of the most high profile arts organisations in Britain. He initiated and became the Director of Africa 05, the largest African arts season ever hosted in Britain, when over 150 venues collaborated to host more than 1000 events. He is currently a Research Associate at the School of African Studies, and Kings College University of London, a member of Tate Britain Council, on the development board of the Young Vic and a Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery. He has chaired the Caine Prize for African writing. Gus’s book to accompany the BBC series was published by Bantam Press. Tanzania in Top Five of The World’s Most “Stunningly Beautiful” Countries To Visit

– “COMPOSITE CYLINDERS”, which is the first of its kind in Tanzania. In Tanzania, the use of metal cylinders has been the most prevalent up to now; henceforth a discerning consumer shall now have a choice as to what type of cylinder best suits their family.

Tanzania has been chosen as one of world’s top five most stunningly beautiful countries to visit. Tanzania packs a lot of game reserve into a land area that is only two-fifths larger than Texas, including the incomparable plains of the Serengeti — 6,000 square miles of savannah teeming with hordes of wildebeest, gazelles and zebras and their predators. Their annual search for new pasture and waters is the largest remaining unaltered animal migration in the world. Tanzania also boasts Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro, whose forest slopes and savannah are a last refuge for many endangered species. The snowy peak of Africa’s highest mountain looms over a vast savannah as well as mountain forest on its higher slopes and an Alpine desert above them. The park is home to 140 species of mammals, many of them rare or endangered such as the African elephant, and a wide range of flora.

“Cheshire Cats” is a two-act play written by Gail Young that centers on the story five women and one man taking part in the London Moonwalk – a yearly charity event that takes part in London, England. The Dar es Salaam Players performed their own version of the play this month to raise money for The Tanzania Breast Cancer Foundation.

One of the oldest festivals in Zanzibar is the celebration of Mwakakogwa. The festival is celebrated in many parts of Zanzibar, but it is in Makunduchi, on the island’s southeast coast, that the ancient rites are most enthusiastically followed. Festivities are accompanied by ancient rituals, such as symbolic fires and mock fights, which are believed to ensure peace and harmony for the coming year.

Swahili International Tourism Expo A Unique Platform – Hon Nyalandu By Geofrey Tengeneza

n February 2013, the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) entered into partnership with Pure Grit Project and Exhibition Management LTD (formally known as Witch & Wizard Creative (Pty Ltd)) to establish an International Tourism Fair in Tanzania, known as Swahili International Tourism Expo (S!TE), set to kick off in October 2014. Pure Grit Project and Exhibition Management LTD is the company that manages the INDABA Tourism Fair, one of the largest tourism marketing events on the African calendar and one of the top three ‘must visit’ events of its kind on the global calendar. has appealed to tourism stakeholders to make use of the newly established International Tourism Fair in Tanzania, soon to be known as Swahili International Tourism Expo (S!TE), as a tourism business linkage between local and international enterprises as well as unique platform to market and promote destination Tanzania. Unveiling and officially announcing the establishment of the new International Tourism Fair in Tanzania to be known as Swahili International Tourism Expo (S!TE) at Serena Hotel, Minister Nyalandu said “I urge all tourism enterprises to seize this opportunity which will enable them to link

their tourism businesses with regional and international tourism markets.” He said that though Tanzania is blessed with unique natural and cultural attractions, we cannot rely merely on the abundant tourist attractions. It is important that we work harder than ever to capitalise on the ‘top of mind’ awareness that our previous efforts have generated for the country. As a nation, we need to make concerted efforts on strategies to promote our attractions. “S!TE, Tanzania’s first ever International Tourism Expo, will be held annually in October at the Mlimani City Convention Centre in Dar es

of its geographical location, adequate air access; the existing ‘state of the art’ and readily available infrastructure and amenities suitable for establishing an international tourism fair. The first S!TE will be held from October 1 – 4, 2014 at the Mlimani City Conference Centre. The effort to establish S!TE in addition to promoting Tanzania as a preferred tourist

destination is intended to link the Small and Medium Tourism Enterprises (SME’s) with the international tourism market. It is a fact that many Tanzanian tourism agencies are small-scale enterprises, which have limited capital and ability to access to international tourism markets. The S!TE and in particular the hosted buyer programme will help address this challenge. August 2014 I Dar Life I 27

Dancing for Life

Contemporary Dance Inspires & Educates ‘’Art is more heart.” - ASEDEVA By Isack Peter Abeneko

D

ar es Salaam was privileged to again host Art for Social and Economic Development in Africa (ASEDEVA) collaborating with Lumumba Theatre Group in presenting the 5th annual Haba na Haba Contemporary Dance Training Program. ASEDEVA is well established as a non-profit organization working in Tanzania for the benefit of the performing arts community and society as a whole, inspiring Tanzanians to engage in social issues through creative work and discussion of that work. Established in 2010 by Tanzanian dancer and choreographer Isack Peter Abeneko, Haba na Haba Contemporary Dance Training Program aims to put on contemporary dance performances in both indoor and outdoor spaces in order to reach new audiences in the local community, increase the value of contemporary dance and provide life skills, business and professional training to local dancers in Tanzania. 34 I Dar Life I August 2014

While Haba na Haba Contemporary Dance 2014 sponsors hosted various workshops and seminars, life skills, and networking meetings at locations around the city such as Russian Tanzania Culture Centre and Alliance Francaise for the entire 4 weeks of the month, the program’s main performances took place in various local community areas and ended with

a brilliant performance at the Russian Culture Centre Venue. While the weekend was packed with powerful performances, one highlight was a performance by Haba na Haba Creative Productions choreographed by different choreographers and students from various nations. Haba na Haba Contemporary Dance would not be possible without the generous support of the Vijana Vipaji Foundation (VVF), the Russian Tanzania Culture Centre, Alliance Francaise Dar es salaam, Nanasi Studio and the New York Live Arts Suitcase Fund. For more information about the Haba na Haba Contemporary Dance Training Program, to learn how to apply to participate, or to sponsor the event, visit www.asedeva.com August 2014 I Dar Life I 35

“‘Haba na haba’ means ‘little by little’ in Swahili, which reflects the hope of building up the contemporary dance scene in Tanzania in exactly that way. We hope to connect with people in the society through contemporary dance trainings and performances as part of a mission to advance the situation of contemporary dance and contemporary dancers in Tanzania,” says Abeneko.

Fashion Chronicles of

Mustafa Hassanali The Emergence of a Fashion Design Legend By Simon Sameja

“Fifteen years ago a new face emerged in Tanzania. Mustafa Hassanali has significantly changed the direction and style of the Tanzanianan fashion industry. Fashion was once a myth in the Tanzanian market. It now is a prominent aspect of our daily lives and Mustafa has played a major role in the change.

M

ustafa Hassanali, a celebrated name in Tanzania, pursues fashion as a religion. His personable and affable demeanor in parallel with his bohemian work of art has landed him among the premier designers in Tanzania and Eastern Africa. No wonder then that he sports an A-list clientele including the crème de la crème of the society. Considered a fashion guru, his designs reflect the deeply embedded cultural heritage of Tanzanian society along with the avant-garde, couture and contemporary styles. A medical doctor by profession, Hassanali’s interest in fashion started as a hobby in 1999. One of his first creations was worn by Hoyce Temu, who was crowned Miss Tanzania 1999 as she donned his signature evening gown. Thus began the rollercoaster ride that has launched the Tanzanian fashion industry to another level, largely thanks to Hassanali’s zeal and zest. Hassanali’s passion for fashion is not limited to fostering his own creations and offering something new to his target audience; he also believes deeply in the enhancement of the Tanzanian fashion industry as a whole. He has taken up the task of responding to late American President John F. Kennedy’s legendary call: “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” “Mustafa has showcased in 27 cities in 18 countries around the world, representing Tanzania as a cultural ambassador. Apart from designing for renowned shows in the country like Miss Tanzania, corporate and television based shows and various other events, Mustafa’s work has been highly appreciated at the international level. He has worked alongside a number of celebrities (including Naomi Campbell, to name one) and high-profile leaders who have adorned his couture.” Mustafa Hassanali was appointed by the Minister of Information, Youth, Culture

and Sports to be part of the steering committee charged with choosing Tanzania’s National Attire. He is also the only designer who was invited by the Tanzania Embassy in Sweden and Russia to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 2011 and 2014 respectively. What adds a unique dimension to Hassanali’s persona is his constant initiative in going out of the way, in supporting various causes such “Breast Cancer Awareness” and “Violence against Women”. In Zanzibar he has supported the Zanzibar Mental Hospital, and his medical background contributed to the establishment of the brand “Fashion 4 Health”.

As 2014 marks 15 years since the commencement of this fashionable journey, whereby various women have made Hassanali part of their life whilst choosing him to design their wedding and statement evening gowns, He truly has been touched and mentored by many of such women over the past 15 years, thus the adage, “behind every successful man there is a woman” has been made a reality. Hassanali was named as one of Africa’s “Top Ten Male Designers” by UK’s NEW AFRICAN WOMEN, and Kenya Airways MSAFIRI magazine named him “Count of Couture”. He launched Swahili Fashion Week seven years ago, creating a promising platform not only for established designers and models, but also for aspiring entrants to the field. It has since become the largest fashion event in East and Central Africa. Meet Mustafa Hassanali and you know what makes him special – he believes in the ‘never say die’ attitude and uses his talent and creativity in making a better today and tomorrow for the fashion industry so very close to his heart.

Razor thin at the tips, with a new display that allows for better viewing angles, it’s a remarkable upgrade. Performance is stepped up a notch thanks to the latest Intel chips and a new technology Apple’s coined Fusion Drive which works to meld together the hard disk and the solid state drives to create one large hard drive that’s leaps and bounds faster than traditional drives. CAREER

Career Assessment Guidelines Navigating the Self-discovery Process

Here are the keys to successful career assessment. Follow these simple rules and guidelines and you should achieve success in this career and vocational self-discovery process.

• •

Do be aware that assessments are available to help guide you toward the right career for you. A qualified career counselor can administer, score, and interpret these assessments. A number of free career assessments also are available on the Internet, though many experts question their reliability. Do compare online career assessments to see which ones might meet your needs. See our detailed assessment comparison chart. Do keep your expectations in check when you take free online assessments. You may attain some direction and guidance from these tests, but don’t be overly reliant on them for magic answers. Don’t discount the possibility that these free online assessments might suggest to you some career ideas and directions you had never thought of and that are worth further exploration. Do take several different assessments to help you learn more about yourself and to help you determine which tests provide the most reliable results for you. Do print out and retain the results of the

assessments you take online. Compare results, and see if you can see patterns -- a “career snapshot” -- beginning to emerge. Do trust your gut. If a free online assessment tells you something about yourself that doesn’t ring true, disregard that information. Don’t rely on free online assessments alone for self-discovery and career guidance. Meet with a career counselor; college students and alumni usually have free or inexpensive access to counselors. Supplement the results you’ve obtained from free online assessments with other assessments the counselor might administer. Ask the counselor to help you interpret and integrate the results of various assessments. Do use career assessments with a variety of other self-discovery activities, such as examining your strengths and weaknesses and the activities you most enjoy and least enjoy. Do have fun taking career assessments. Selfdiscovery is almost always an enlightening and often entertaining process.

Artist of the month:

Stina Focus on: Tanzanian Art By Brittany Karima

“The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without work.” “The final product, as witnessed in Stina›s latest work, is the culmination of a real journey through the life and architecture that makes up the rich tapestry of Tanzania and its people. Each and every image presented here is itself suggestive of the journey, with layers and details that only become clear once the viewer has taken the time to appreciate it. Colour is a powerful tool here, and Stina›s use of the faded, washed out palette highlights the very nature of her visual take on her environment. « Name: Stina van den Idsert Profession: Visual Artist Born: 1973

52 I Dar Life I August 2014

“I was born in Nairobi to a Kenyan mother and Dutch father. I spend my first years living in Turkana , Kisumu, Eldoret and Nairobi. We moved to the Netherlands when I was about 4. After some years my parents decided to move back to Nairobi where I attended the Dutch Primary school. After completing that I went to Hillcrest Secondary. When I was 16, my father moved to Tanzania where I attended the International School of Moshi. This is where my passion for art really blossomed and I knew I wanted to make it my career. After completing my IB diploma I went for further education to the Netherlands and attended the Gerrit Rietveld Art Academy. Soon after graduation, I moved to Oslo with my Norwegian husband. I exhibited my work in a number of galleries in Olso including the Cultural Museum of Oslo. My family has since then lived for more than a decade in Asia including Nepal, Pakistan and Bangkok, before moving to Tanzania in 2012. I have combined teaching and and arts during much of this period and held numerous exhibitions and workshops in all countries.” Dar Life - What inspired you to start painting? Stina - From a young age, I was surrounded by several family members that were artists. My mother is a very talented fashion designer. My grandfather was quite a successful painter and sculptor. Then there were several aunts and uncles that were professional artists. Looking at and discussing art was in a way something I was brought up with. Watching a blank canvas turn into something beautiful was magical each time. DL - How long have you been an artist? Stina - I think I always have been... DL - When did you start? Stina - I was drawing/ scribbling as long as I can remember. It›s all I did in my free time, when I wanted to relax, or just be. However it was not until I chose to take IGCSE Art and later IB Art higher level. Then I was slowly but surely going towards choosing it as my career path. August 2014 I Dar Life I 53

DL - Where do you feel art is going? Stina - Globally with the internet and using the computer as a tool. This «new» medium most definitely is effecting art today- it can be in a good way, when used as a tool, but a piece of art produced by a computer alone lacks soul. DL - What is the place of your work in society? Stina - I think my work is there to show and highlight the ordinary and to make the ordinary special by presenting it in a new perspective in a way. It’s about appreciating the simple things in life. DL - Why is your work so pretty! What do you think makes it stand out? Stina - I think having been brought up in a multicultural home, having travelled and lived in so many different places and countries. This aspect shines through my work. All the places always have inspired me and it’s obvious I combine so many different elements of those places in my work. I think this fact makes my work different and unique. To purchase any of Stina’s paintings or to inquire further about her work please contact her via email at stinahaldorsen@hotmail.com or too view more of Stina’s work check out her FB page “Stinart “

Picture Courtesy of Stina van den Idsert

DL - What is your genre of painting and what mediums do you like to use? Stina - Structures, especially doors and windows, portraits, stilllifes and sometimes landscapes. Like my background, I have always been interested in mixed media, using it in a way where it blends in and it almost looks like one medium. In some of my paintings I use five or six different mediums, but when people see it they often only recognize a few. I like that. DL - Tell us about your first exhibition? When was it? Stina - It was a group exhibit of students’ work while in high school at the International School of Moshi Tanzania in 1992. My first solo exhibit was in Nepal at the Siddharta Art Gallery in Katmandu in 2003. DL - Where do you do your work? Stina - At home, it’s the easiest way for me to combine doing my art work with raising three children. DL - Do you work from life, or from photographs or from imagination? Stina - I work from my memories. And I try to recapture a moment, a feeling that I felt then. With my latest work where I have combined photography I obviously used photographs and painting to create the final image. 54 I Dar Life I August 2014

BUSINESS

Making a Lasting Connection Tips for Business Telephone Etiquette

I

By Myron Curry

n this fast and furious age we live in, one of the more important issues being addressed in the workforce is a lack of effective and proper telephone skills and etiquette. How many times have you been upset or put off by a call center or business representative who had no telephone etiquette?

“This professional deficiency will create a negative perception of your business and cause a loss of customers and revenue.” The following 10 tips to improve telephone skills will help you develop a positive and professional atmosphere with regard to your business: Speak precisely. The caller cannot see you to discern your facial expressions and it is therefore important you talk in a clear manner that is slightly slow with a positive effort. Do not shout. Using a normal tone of voice is imperative in order to keep the level of stress at a minimum. Talking loudly will annoy the caller and create tension. No drinking, no eating, and no gum. The person on the other end of the phone line has no desire to listen to your chewing or gulping. It is rude and very unprofessional. Use proper language. Do not swear or curse, stay away from slang words and improper language. It is offensive to many individuals and shows disrespect. Use their proper name. Never address the caller by their first name as this will impart a familiarity that does not exist. Always use their proper (last) name and title when addressing them. Listen attentively. Allow the caller to express their reasons for contacting you and listen to what they say. Restating what was said or repeating it back to them is a sign of a good 56 I Dar Life I August 2014

listener. Plus it is always best to verify a message to ensure accuracy. Patience is a virtue. Allow the caller time to vent their frustrations. Do not engage your emotions and become rude or snappish. Remain calm and speak with a low and monotone voice in order to assuage the caller’s rage. Incoming calls. Always ask if you can place the caller on hold for a moment. Never set the phone down without asking or placing the call on hold. It is unprofessional and the caller may misunderstand something they overhear. Once you have placed the incoming call on hold as well, go back to the first caller and thank them for holding. Focus on the call. Do not allow any distractions as it is critical to give the caller your full attention. If you allow someone in the office to pull your attention away from the phone call, the caller will become upset and angered. Properly identify who you are. Make sure you tell the caller your name and your company’s name so that they know who is on the phone with them and that they have called the desired place of business. When leaving a message, be brief, to the point, and clearly state your name, the company you work for, the call back telephone number and the date and time of your call.

anzibar will again be dressed with glamour and excitement with the arrival of one of the most anticipated events of the year, Zanzibar Fashion Week 2014. Fashion Week Zanzibar is proud to announce its programme for the live streaming of catwalks directly from the Mtoni Palace ruins. Inspired by the wondrous, mysterious and enchanting land of Africa and particularly Zanzibar, a place known for its rich history and architecture, the designers based their range on the flow of sand dunes and regal motifs.

From 25 to 27 September 2014, established names, emerging designers and accessory labels will show their fall 2014 collections to fashion professionals and the public. There will be a special focus on established names such as Farouque Abdela, Kanga Kabisa, Kihaga Designer, Made in Africa, Rizwan Janmohamed, August 2014 I Dar Life I 61

Zanzibari designers generally keep their pieces simple, adding minimal glamour by incorporating kanga, kitenge, trims, tassels, braiding, weaves and sequins in the Mtoni Palace Ruins. Rather than promoting the unattainable, this fashion show will all be about accessibility without sacrificing style. Once again we have succeeded in drawing up a catwalk programme comprising a number of runway shows and events. Together these events will highlight a cross-section of Tanzania fashion, our identity and our society. 62 I Dar Life I August 2014

It’s a man’s world Total Time-out for Men By John Lindsay

L

ong gone are the days where the word “spa” is only associated with women. Research shows that the spa industry continues to see significant growth in male clientele. So what can be the reason be for this phenomenon? Spas have now created a gender-neutral atmosphere where both men and women feel comfortable, with treatments that are named specifically for men like the “Total Time-out for Men”. Quite recently I called a good friend of mine just to say hi. After asking him what he is doing, he gave me a shy giggle and told me him and another friend went for manicures. Based on this information I decided to start a survey with 66 I Dar Life I August 2014

women and men on what they think is the must do’s and don’ts in male grooming. “Thinking I was going to get bombarded with comments from the ladies, it was the guys who responded first with that they thought was the rules and regulations on male grooming. The comments were insightful, hilarious and to the point. This indicated on how much more aware men are about their physical appearance. More than I would have imagined. This showed that even if your guy is tough and robust on the outside, inside there is a metro man waiting to come out and show of his manicure.” The top five comments from the guys on what they thought were most important when it

comes to male grooming was as follow and in this specific order: Control the body hair. Not all men are blessed with baby smooth chests but if you are one of the unlucky guys who border on looking like a grizzly bear consider to wax, shave, laser or trim the excess all over your body. “I love the smell of my daddy” was the words for an Old Spice advertisement many years ago. And it is true. Just the right amount of fragrance is a must for any man. Body odour is a big no-no and bathing in your aftershave is a waste of money. Facial hair can be quite a controversial topic. Nothing wrong with a beard if it is kept neat and trimmed. My mother

Darkness Visible - by William Golding Darkness Visible opens at the height of the London Blitz, when a naked child steps out of an all-consuming fire. Miraculously saved but hideously scarred, soon tormented at school and at work, Matty becomes a wanderer, a seeker after some unknown redemption. Two more lost children await him, twins as exquisite as they are loveless. Toni dabbles in political violence; Sophy, in sexual tyranny. As Golding weaves their destinies together, his book reveals both the inner and outer darkness of our world. “A brilliantly spooky novel … Written with great insight and a surprising humour, it is a thorough pleasure to read.” The Flavours of Love - by Dorothy Koomson “It’s been 18 months since my husband was murdered and I’ve decided to finish writing The Flavours of Love, the cookbook he started before he died. Everyone thinks I’m coping so well without him - they have no idea what I’ve been hiding or what I did back then to protect my family. But now that my 14-year-old daughter has confessed a devastating secret, and my husband’s killer, who was never caught, has started to write to me, I know it’s only a matter of time before the truth about me and what I’ve done will be revealed. My name is Saffron Mackleroy and this is my story…” “A powerful thriller … we were hooked from the start.” Dr Michael Mosley and Peta Bee investigate the fascinating science behind a radical new approach to exercise, one that is incredibly time efficient. Research done by leading sports scientists has shown the extraordinary impact that “ultra short bursts” of high intensity intermittent training can have, whether you are an athlete or a sedentary couch potato. In Fast Exercise, Michael Mosley, a sloth, teams up with super-fit health journalist Peta Bee to dispel myths and show you how to get the most out of exercise, whatever your age or level of fitness. They offer practical, science-based advice and a range of novel workouts designed for the time-starved generation. With workouts that can be done anywhere, anytime and which fit unobtrusively into even the busiest day, this is a book for those who, like Michael, don’t enjoy exercising but want to lose fat and stay healthy. It is also for those, like Peta, who love exercise and want to get the most from it. It is also for those who are simply curious about how their bodies work. 68 I Dar Life I August 2014

Ledger Plaza Bahari Beach To Host The Stars of Real Madrid

edger Plaza Bahari Beach, the new outstanding five-star beach resort in Dar es Salaam is set to host the Stars of the Legend Team of Real Madrid. The resort has great potential and impressive facilities to attract big sporting teams. It has already hosted the Elephants team of Ivory Coast during the last World Cup Qualification Round and also Yanga Sports Team, the champions of Tanzania, on several occasions. Tanzania seems to be the place to visit this year if you are famous and looking to enjoy an African safari. After billionaire Warren Buffet’s visit, which increased tourism in the country, the next famous people to visit Tanzania this year will be a group of Madrid football legends. A group of 25 Real Madrid stars plan to visit Tanzania in August for a game against Tanzania Eleven. Football legends such as Luis Figo, Micheal Owen, Fernando Morientes , Fabio Cannavaro, Fernando Hierro, Reuben De la Red, Christian Karembeu, Michel Salgado, Steve Mcmannaman, Ruud van Nisterlooy, Jose Maria Gutierrez Hernandez ‘Guti’, and Fernando Redondo will be present at the match. A few more such as Zinedin Zidane and Roberto Carlos have not been confirmed but may also make an appearance. There might also be some current Real Madrid players involved in the trip such as Christian Ronaldo, Ika Cassilas and Gareth Bale, which would significantly up the trip’s tourism-boosting potential for Tanzania. The football legends will arrive in Tanzania on 22 August 2014, and the match against Tanzania 70 I Dar Life I August 2014

Eleven should take place on 23 August at the National Stadium in Tanzania. The team is also expected to visit various Tanzania safari tourist sites including Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Mount Kilimanjaro. This is an opportunity for the Tanzania eleven team to play against superstars and perhaps learn a few things from them. The tourism industry is of course expected to benefit from the legends’ visit. This visit will go a long way in supplementing Tanzania’s efforts in promoting the country as a tourist destination. Famous names always provide good PR opportunities. The visit will even be reported and aired on several international media channels so Tanzania will get quite a lot of publicity this month. “Former Spanish team captain, Ruben de La Red, believes the trip will be a good opportunity to market tourism in Tanzania and also improve football in the country. He said their decision to come to Tanzania was mostly fuelled by the fact that Tanzania has so many football lovers. He said this would be an opportunity for the Tanzanian football fans to watch Real Madrid playing in their country and perhaps motivate aspiring football players.” Bahari Ledge Hotel has prepared a room package for guests looking for accommodation from 22-25 August 2014. Personal growth is encouraged through inviting great speakers to these events.” Lisa, a member of Rotary Club of Arusha, shared what Rotary International stands for and elaborated on activities that the club supports through thousands of dollars collected from external fundraising and Rotarians’ personal donations. Dawn, a volunteer from Pipi House and a budding lawyer, enlightened us on the plight of street boys and street girls. Libby, the founder of yoursisters.org, shared her passion for helping out women through empowerment programmes.

At the end of the event, several individuals donated money, food and promised to make increased efforts to make a positive difference in someone’s world. The next event will be held on Thursday, 7th August, with Ms. Jane Ntunde, a Management and HR Practitioner, as the guest speaker.

WILD LIFE

Wild & Untouchable Rua Venture Into Wild Africa By Beatrice Maro

“With its harsh and rocky landscape, no other park in Tanzania epitomises the definition of “wild Africa” quite like Ruaha National Park. After the annexation of two other major conservation areas, Ruaha is now the largest national park in Tanzania, covering a vast area of 23,000 square kilometres (substantially larger than Wales!). While few are familiar with the park, national park connoisseurs recognize it as one of the most spectacular in Africa.“

Ruaha National Park

F

or anyone seeking a true African wilderness experience, a visit to Ruaha National Park is essential. One of Tanzania’s wildest parks, Ruaha can only be described as a true, unspoiled, natural wilderness. Because of its distance from any major city, very few tourists visit the park each year. Yet those who do are treated to unsurpassable wilderness and complete isolation. Ruahas’ greatest secret lies in its extraordinary diversity of animals, plants and birds.

Located in south-western Tanzania, Ruaha sprawls within and along an ancient arm of the Great Rift Valley, covering a unique transition zone where the eastern and southern species of both fauna and flora meet against a dramatic topographical background. Because of its location on the rift and surrounding geological formations, Ruaha is extremely diverse, with access to several different habitat types. The vast majority of the park above the escarpment termed “Miombo Woodland” is rarely

visited by tourists, as it is relatively difficult to reach and known for challenging game viewing and an abundance of tse-tse flies. The scenery in Miombo is quite dramatic, with tall Brachysteiga trees forming continuous woodland housing for some specialist species of antelope, such as the magnificent sable, as well as several miombo-specializing birds. The low-altitude Ruaha Valley is the more developed section of the park, which covers little more than a third of the park’s August 2014 I Dar Life I 77

total size. The Ruaha Valley has a decent road network for game viewing and a variety of vegetation types, thus offering a diverse game drive experience without the annoyance of tsetse flies. The Great Ruaha River, which is known as the park’s lifeline, attracts big herds of animals of all shapes and sizes and flows right through the Ruaha Valley. Some of Ruahas’ best features are found in the valley, from massive rocky hills and outcrops to dense, impenetrable bush and open grasslands in the east. The most striking features are numerous serpentine dry “sand rivers”, which crisscross the park and are lined with dense vegetation, where many animals take refuge. 78 I Dar Life I August 2014

Birding in Ruaha National Park For birdwatchers, Ruaha’s birdlife is sure to please. There are a recorded 530 different species of birds in the park, including giant herons, saddlebilled storks, white-headed plovers and white-backed night herons. There are six species of both vultures and hornbills, and raptors abound. The crested barbet, an attractive yellowand-black bird whose persistent trilling is a characteristic sound of the southern bush, can also be found in Ruaha alongside central Tanzanian endemics such as the yellow-collared lovebird and ashy starling. The park’s birds make their home among the branches of Ruaha’s 1600 species of trees, which is twice as many as the number

of species in the great Selous Game Reserve, although Ruaha is only half the size of Selous. Wildlife in Ruaha National Park Only two words can define the wildlife at Ruaha National Park: wild and beautiful. The park holds an incredible array of animals. Among Tanzanian parks, Ruaha possesses one of the highest species counts of large mammals. The park holds an estimated 20,000 elephants alone, and it is not uncommon in the dry season to see well over 100 elephants in a single drive. Hippos rule the river, and vast quantities of these animals can also be seen sunning themselves along the stunning river sandbanks

in the early morning. Massive herds of buffalo, with up to 500 animals plus seen in a single herd, coexist alongside giraffes, zebras, impalas, elands, crocodiles, lions and leopards. Ruaha is also home to some very rare creatures. Sable antelope can occasionally be found in the Miombo areas as well as in the springs in the western part of the park. Roan antelope are also sometimes seen in the eastern area of the park. Lesser kudus and grants gazelle are intermittently spotted at the southernmost point of their geographical range. Dik-diks abound all over the park, and rarely does a drive return without having glimpsed the noble greater kudu. Ruaha

is also home to the second largest population of wild dog in Africa. As the majority of the park’s wild dogs live in the inaccessible wilderness areas of the north, only a few lucky visitors spot them. Why visit Ruaha National Park? Untouched, Pristine Nature: Ruaha is one of the less frequented national parks in Tanzania, which means that the park’s wildlife has hardly been altered by human intervention. Personalized Wildlife Watching: Because Ruaha is expanding in size yearly, the chances of bumping into other vehicles that can startle an animal you may be already watching are limited.

Lots to Discover: In areas where park authorities have formal tracks, there are no access restrictions, which allows visitors a great deal of freedom to explore undiscovered territory. Currently, Tanzanian park authorities are adding more routes while carefully monitoring the ecological impact, thus ascertaining that the wildlife remains as undisturbed as possible. There are plans to add up to 1500 kilometers of road networks. Go by Foot: Ruaha is one of the few national parks in Tanzania where walking safari is permitted when accompanied by an armed ranger. This liberty gives nature enthusiasts an opportunity to receive an up-close and personal August 2014 I Dar Life I 79

Getting to Ruaha National Park There are two ways guests can reach Ruaha National Park. One is by road, through Iringa from Dar es Salaam via Mikumi, or from Arusha via Dodoma. Ruaha is also accessible by plane. Scheduled charter flights are available from Dar es Salaam, Selous, Serengeti, Arusha, Iringa and Mbeya through companies such as Safari Air Link, Flight Link and Coastal Aviation and Auric Air. When to go To see predators and large mammals, dry season (midMay to December); to see birds, lush scenery and wildflowers, wet season (January to April). The male greater kudu is most visible in June, which is the breeding season. 80 I Dar Life I August 2014

Where to stay Ruaha River Lodge occupies a unique and privileged position, set around a series of rocky kopjes in a bend of the Great Ruaha River. It offers guests the opportunity to have their own riverside cottage designed to blend seamlessly into the surroundings. The lodge extends along the rocky shores of the Great Ruaha River, affording views up and down the river. Game animals are drawn to the river from the neighbouring hills, and guests can see great wildlife dramas unfold from the comfort and protection of their selfcontained natural stone and thatch ‘cottage’. Mdonya Old River Camp is nestled in the curving banks of a sand-river. The tents are comfortably furnished with double or twin beds and have

large verandas where one can relax and observe the surrounding wildlife. Mwagusi Safari Camp is located on the banks of Mwagusi Sand River. With its ideal location, excellent guides, and luxurious accommodation, Mwagusi Camp is one of the most popular safari camps in Ruaha. Note: All of these accommodation options are designed to highlight different aspects of Ruaha in order to cater to guests with different preferences. For the more discerning safari lover who is looking for an ‘off the beaten track’ pure wilderness experience, a visit to Ruaha to view its large beasts, stunning vistas, numerous baobabs and unique birds and animals must not be missed
