The Cheetah is the World’s fastest land animal, and can go from 0-68miles an hour, in only 3 seconds!

It is a daylight hunter with a distinctive spotted coat, allowing it to blend easily into high, dry grasses….

Cheetahs have exceptionally keen eyesight to scan the grassland environment for signs of prey.

At the right moment, it will sprint to bring down its prey. Such chases cause it to use a huge amount of energy as its usually over in under a minute!

Cheetahs are the only big cat that can turn in mid-air while sprinting.

Its unique body structure, flexible spine, semi-retractable claws, long legs & tail allow it to achieve the unbelievable speed of 70miles per hour.

Female cheetah, typically have litter of 3 cubs, and stay with them for about 2years. The first year, the cubs learn from their mother and practise hunting with playful games.

Those black tear lines on either side of the cheetah’s nose function like a football players black face paint, keeping the sun out of the big cats eyes while they hunt.

The cheetah’s claws don’t retract when they run. Instead they act like cleats to help the cheetah reach its top speeds.

When running the cheetahs use their tail to steer, like a rudder for a boat.

August - 2020 SIXTY YEARS OF DEDICATED CHIMPANZEE RESEARCH

Tanzania and other regional member states of the East African community are marking sixty years of chimpanzee conservation, setting a new path for regional tourism development through visits to chimpanzee communities. Counting the closest human natural relatives, chimpanzees are mostly found in East and Central Africa in the equatorial and mountain forests, providing the most exciting visits in which tourists could observe their human-related behaviour.

Jane Goodall, the famous world primatologist arrived in Tanzania in mid-July 1960 then devoted her time to research chimpanzee conservation and campaigned tirelessly for a healthier environment in Gombe, western Tanzania.

COVID-19 pandemic is moving towards a new stage as many countries are starting to ease their lockdowns, and even in our own Tanzania, flights are being opened up. Whilst closely monitoring and following the guidelines set by the Tanzanian authorities and WHO, Auric Air Services Limited have resumed back and increased their own vigilance, including ramping up hygiene and cleanliness standards, of their facilities and aircraft by having developed internal procedures for the safety of their employees and partners. For the confidence of passengers, they have implemented sanitizing procedures at all our check- in desks as well as at aircraft boarding points and office and aircraft disinfecting procedures whereby all our offices are being disinfected twice daily while aircraft are being disinfected after every arrival. MKOMAZI: RHINO TOURISM SANCTUARY

Mkomazi National Park in Northern Tanzania is set to become the first wildlife park in Africa specialized for black rhino tourism. When planning their African safari, tourists from Europe, America, and Asia would add to their visiting itineraries, a few days’ tour of Mkomazi National Park to see the rare African black rhino, now on the verge of disappearing from Earth. Looking to diversify tourism and wildlife safaris in Tanzania, Mkomazi National Park will introduce rhino tourism in July this year as a new attraction to attract tourists who are interested to see and learn more about the African black rhino. Under the management of Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), Mkomazi is expected to be the only wildlife park in East Africa and the rest of Africa where visitors may see the black rhino.

TANZANIA TRAVEL ADVISORY FOR COVID-19 ADJUSTED

Recently Tanzania announced that all travelers, whether foreigners or returning residents entering or leaving the country will be subjected to enhanced screening for COVID-19 infection.

There will be no 14 days mandatory quarantine upon arrival. All travelers whether foreigners or returning residents whose countries or airlines require them to get tested for COVID-19 and turn negative, as a condition for traveling, will be required to present a certificate upon arrival. Travelers from other countries with symptoms and signs related to COVID-19 infection will undergo enhanced screening and may be tested for RT-PCR. While in the country, all international travelers should observe adherence to infection prevention and control measures such as hand hygiene, wearing masks, and keeping physical distancing as deemed appropriate.

DEEP SEA AND INLAND FISHING The water around Zanzibar and Pemba islands is considered by experts to offer some of the best fishing in the world, especially the Pemba Channel, between Zanzibar and Pemba, and around Mafia Island, south of Zanzibar. Rivers are stocked with trout around Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru. Large rivers such as the Kilombero and Great Ruaha offer fabulous sport fishing for Tiger Fish, and large Nile Perch can be caught in the great lakes.

highest free-standing mountain in the world. It is a free-standing mountain because it is not a part of a mountain range; it just rises abruptly from the open plains to kiss the clouds with a snow-capped peak at an elevation of 5, 895m (19,340 feet).

1. Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano but not an extinct one. The most recent activity was about 200 years ago; the last major eruption was 360,000 years ago. Ominous rumbles can sometimes be heard â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and gases emerge from fume holes in the crater.

2. Almost every kind of ecological system in the world is found on the mountain, right from tropical crops on the cultivated slopes, to the lush alpine forest inhabited by wild animals. Above the forest lies the moorland zone where a cover of heather, giant lobelia and huge, cactus-like plants grow. Then there is an almost-lunar landscape, the saddle, which stretches between

the two peaks of Kibo and Mawezi.

TO GO IN BONGOYO ISLAND One of the most entertaining things to do in Dar Es Salaam is swim in the beautiful warm tropical Indian Ocean.

COCO BEACH ON THE WEEKENDS Coco Beach, also known as Oyster Bay, is a stretch of beach located on the Msasani Peninsula of Dar Es Salaam.

AZANIA LUTHERAN CHURCH Originally built by German missionaries in Tanzania, the Azania Lutheran Church is an iconic structure located at Dar Es Salaamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s harbor front. From the cathedral youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have easy access to other tourist attractions around town.

NYAMA CHOMA Nyama choma (roasted meat â&#x20AC;&#x201C; often goat) is wildly popular â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and incredibly delicious. Go to a local restaurant, order your choice of meat and wait for it to slowly roast. In Tanzania, nyama choma is served with a few chillies and sometimes a tomato and red onion garnish. Many Tanzanians choose to wash down their nyama choma with a few beers.

In 2016 I competed and won the Swahili Fashion Week Emerging Designers Competition which led me to showcase my very first collection in the 10th annual Swahili Fashion Week.”

Tanzanian designers are not letting that opportunity pass by, they use all their imagination to create masterpieces.

They are claiming the fashion industry stage from the Swahili Fashion Week in Dar es Salaam to the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in South Africa. Tanzanian designers are pushing the

Every month Dar Life dedicates this section to young emerging and well-known designers who want to create brands and use the fashion platform as a stepping stone towards achieving their dream. This month we met Shahbaaz Sayed Yusuf whose ideas in designing clothes and accessories are amazing, you must watch out!

Shahbaaz Sayed is a very young fashion designer who is pursuing his dream of becoming the best fashion brand in Tanzania and the world at large. He has participated in various fashion competitions since he began his journey in the fashion industry in 2015 to showcase his talents and build his brand.

“At an age of 18, he joined a modelling/talent agency in Dar es salaam. He took the time to understand and learn a few tricks

about the fashion industry. He had to do his research before he dive into the fashion world and being in the industry at a very young age had its own advantage, everyone around him was very supportive rather than seeing him as a competition and through them got to learn so much.”

After winning the emerging designer’s competition by Swahili fashion week in 2016 as the youngest title holder and launching his brand in 2017 he is

now taking the Tanzanian fashion industry by storm. His personality and charms is what set him apart from other designers

Shahbaaz Sayed is a fashion brand that offers both women’s clothing and apparel specializing in statement pieces and evening wear. The brand creates unique garments pieces which aim in enhancing female form and paying attention to the uniqueness in appearance and fit.

BREASTFEEDING MYTH A guide to patients & families

Breastfeeding is the act of feeding a newborn from a mother’s breast. It has numerous benefits and is recommended to be the only source of food to a newborn till 6 months of age.”

B

reastfeeding has been practiced from time immemorial; millions of women have done it, from the early dark ages to the modern woman.

So, it should be easy right? Our bodies should kick into action as soon as a new born baby is placed on the mother, right? The answer to both those questions are no. While breastfeeding is a natural experience there are barriers and challenges that parents face that prevent them from having a successful breastfeeding journey. Recently, all a mother needs to do is mention she’s breastfeeding, and instantly, everyone seems to have an opinion or a piece of advice. While you can pick up a few pointers from well-meaning friends and relatives, too often the wrong information is passed along -- sometimes through several generations. This article will focus on common myths that hinder successful breastfeeding.

Myth 1: It’s normal for breastfeeding to hurt.

Fact: While initiating breastfeeding in the first few days can sometimes be tender and uncomfortable, it should never hurt, and that discomfort should never last more than these first few days. Nature designed breastfeeding to feel good by flooding our system with hormones that contribute to relaxation and mother-infant bonding. If you dread breastfeeding because of the pain, chances are something is wrong. If you have consistent pain during breastfeeding, your baby could be latching poorly or you could be suffering from an infection.

Myth 2: I will not make enough milk until my breast milk “comes in.”

Fact: Under normal circumstances a new mother makes exactly enough breast milk for a newborn’s needs. The first milk that is produced is called colostrum, a yellow thick version of the milk. This is essential for the baby and should not be discarded. A newborn’s stomach is about the size of a marble and at first the mother’s body will make about five millilitres (ml), a seemingly small

Though biologically natural, breastfeeding is actually a learned behavior. Like any other new skill, it may take time, practice, patience, and persistence to master. During the already emotionally fragile period after having a baby, it’s even more difficult to cope with frustration and difficulties. But breastfeeding will become easier with time and professional help, if necessary. Many mothers need practical support with positioning their baby for breastfeeding and making sure their baby is correctly attached to the breast. amount but perfect for a newborn’s stomach.

As the baby continues to breastfeed regularly, the mother’s body will get the signal to increase the volume of milk as the baby’s needs demand it.

Myth 3: My baby is feeding all the time, she is not getting enough milk – I should supplement with formula milk.

Fact: Because breast milk is so easy to digest, babies generally get hungrier sooner and therefore feed every two to three hours.

Breastfeeding is a positive feedback cycle, the more a baby sucks the more milk the breasts produce. Remember, babies also use the breast for comfort and not just feed.

If you’re worried that your baby isn’t getting enough to eat, count the number of dirty diapers she has—she should have at least six wet diapers plus two or three “seedy” stools daily. You can also schedule a weight check with your pediatrician.

Many mothers can continue breastfeeding after going back to work. If your workplace permits, you can breastfeed during working hours, go home and breastfeed or ask a family member or friend to bring your baby to you. You may also need to express your milk, store it and take it home. Talk to your pediatrician or lactation consultant on how to achieve this successfully.

Myth 5: Breastfeeding is an effective form of birth control.

Fact: If you are having unprotected sex, it is completely possible to get pregnant, whether you’re breastfeeding or not. But unless you are ready for another baby, you should discuss birth control options with your OB-GYN. Myth 6: Small breasts won’t make enough milk.

Fact: The capacity for a woman’s breasts to make milk is determined by 50

the breast tissue (milkproducing cells), not by the size of her breasts. Breast size is determined by fat, which has no bearing on milk production.

Myth 7: You can’t take any medication if you’re breastfeeding.

Fact: Most medications have no effect on the baby and may be used when breastfeeding however be sure to ask your doctor first before taking any medication and check the labels when buying over the counter medication.

Myth 8: certain food can increase milk production.

Fact: Various cultures advocate for food such as oatmeal, black pepper, pumpkin seeds, barely, nuts, and herbs that help in increasing the supply of milk production. A breastfeeding mother does not require special foods to produce milk or increase her milk supply. Milk production is determined by the amount of milk removed from the breast. A mother is required

to stay hydrated and have a healthy balanced meal.

Always discuss with your pediatrician/obstetrician or better yet a lactation consultant to help you figure out your path and make your breastfeeding journey a pleasant, bonding experience one for your child and yourself.

Sweet Almond Body Scrub

Almonds are packed full of nutrients like vitamin E, magnesium, and healthy monounsaturated fats. These compounds make them nourishing to your body inside and out. Try this recipe to exfoliate and moisturize your skin.

Oats and Honey Facial

Besides giving you energy all morning long, oatmeal is a gentle exfoliant with soothing, antiinflammatory properties. Here is a simple face scrub that can also be used as a mask.

• 1 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup almond oil, 2 tsp honey and 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

• 1/2 cup oats, any variety and 1/2 cup honey

Mix all ingredients together in a shatter-proof bowl. In the shower or tub, massage the scrub into your skin in circular motions (after washing your skin with soap), concentrating on rough or dry areas of the skin. Rinse with warm water, allowing the residual layer of almond oil to remain on the skin. Pat dry

Blend oats and honey in a blender or food processor until smooth. Apply to clean, dry skin in small circular motions, covering the entire face, neck, and décolletage areas. Rinse with warm water, or, for a mask treatment, allow leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse.

Double Almond Body Scrub

To make almond meal, toss a handful of raw almonds, with skins, into your blender. Blend for a few minutes until the almonds are the consistency of whole wheat flour.

With its harsh and rocky landscape, no other park in Tanzania epitomises the definition of “wild Africa” quite like Ruaha National Park. After the annexation of two other major conservation areas, Ruaha is now the largest national park in Tanzania, covering a vast area of 23,000 square kilometres (substantially larger than Wales!).

RUAHA NATIONAL PARK Second Largest National Park In Africa

F

or anyone seeking a true African wilderness experience, a visit to Ruaha National Park is essential.

One of Tanzania’s wildest parks, Ruaha can only be described as a true, unspoiled, natural wilderness. Because of its distance from any major city, very few tourists visit the park each year. Yet those who do are treated to unsurpassable wilderness and complete isolation. Ruahas’ greatest secret lies in its extraordinary diversity of animals, plants and birds.

The vast majority of the park above the escarpment termed “Miombo Woodland ‘’ is rarely visited by tourists, as it is relatively difficult to reach and known for challenging game viewing and an abundance of tse-tse flies. The scenery in Miombo is quite dramatic, with tall Brachystegia trees forming continuous woodland housing for some specialist species of antelope, such as the magnificent sable, as well as several miombo-specializing birds.

The low-altitude Ruaha Valley is the more developed section of the park, which covers little more than a third of

the park’s total size. The Ruaha Valley has a decent road network for game viewing and a variety of vegetation types, thus offering a diverse game drive experience without the annoyance of tse-tse flies. The Great Ruaha River, which is known as the park’s lifeline, attracts big herds of animals of all shapes and sizes and flows right through the Ruaha Valley. Some of Ruahas’ best features are found in the valley, from massive rocky hills and outcrops to dense, impenetrable bush and open grasslands in the east. The most striking features are numerous serpentine dry “sand rivers”, which crisscross the park and are lined with dense vegetation, where many animals take refuge.

Birding in Ruaha National Park For birdwatchers, Ruaha’s birdlife is sure to please. There are a recorded 530 different species of birds in the park, including giant herons, saddlebilled storks, white-headed plovers and white-backed night herons. Located in south-western Tanzania, Ruaha sprawls within and along an ancient arm of the Great Rift Valley, covering a unique transition zone where the eastern and southern species of both fauna and flora meet against a dramatic topographical background. Because of its location on the rift and surrounding geological formations, Ruaha is extremely diverse, with access to several different habitat types.

is a characteristic sound of the southern bush, can also be found in Ruaha alongside central Tanzanian endemics such as the yellow-collared lovebird and ashy starling.

The park’s birds make their home among the branches of Ruaha’s 1600 species of trees, which is twice as many as the number of species in the great Selous Game Reserve, although Ruaha is only half the size of Selous.

Wildlife in Ruaha National Park Only two words can define the wildlife at Ruaha National Park: wild and beautiful. The park holds an incredible array of animals. Among Tanzanian parks, Ruaha possesses one of the highest species counts of large mammals. The park holds an estimated 20,000 elephants alone, and it is not

uncommon in the dry season to see well over 100 elephants in a single drive. Hippos rule the river, and vast quantities of these animals can also be seen sunning themselves along the stunning river sandbanks in the early morning. Massive herds of buffalo, with up to 500 animals plus seen in a single herd, coexist alongside giraffes, zebras, impalas, elands, crocodiles, lions and leopards.

Ruaha is also home to some very rare creatures. Sable antelope can occasionally be found in the Miombo areas as well as in the springs in the western part of the park. Roan antelope are also sometimes seen in the eastern area of the park. Lesser kudus and grant’s gazelle are intermittently spotted at the southernmost point of their geographical

range. Dik-diks abound all over the park, and rarely does a drive return without having glimpsed the noble greater kudu. Ruaha is also home to the second largest population of wild dog in Africa. As the majority of the park’s wild dogs live in the inaccessible wilderness areas of the north, only a few lucky visitors spot them.

Why visit Ruaha National Park?

• Untouched, Pristine Nature:

Ruaha is one of the less frequented national parks in Tanzania, which means that the park’s wildlife has hardly been altered by human intervention.

• Personalized Wildlife Watching: Because Ruaha is expanding in size yearly, the chances of bumping into other vehicles that can

startle an animal you may be already watching are limited.

• Lots to Discover: In areas where park authorities have formal tracks, there are no access restrictions, which allows visitors a great deal of freedom to explore undiscovered territory.

Currently, Tanzanian park authorities are adding more routes while carefully monitoring the ecological impact, thus ascertaining that the wildlife remains as undisturbed as possible.

There are plans to add up to 1500 kilometers of road networks.

• Go by Foot: Ruaha is one of the few national parks in Tanzania where walking safari is permitted when accompanied by an armed ranger. This liberty gives nature enthusiasts an opportunity to receive an up-close and personal

experience with wildlife in dense places where safari vehicles cannot penetrate.

Getting to Ruaha National Park

There are two ways guests can reach Ruaha National Park.

One is by road, through Iringa from Dar es Salaam via Mikumi, or from Arusha via Dodoma.

Ruaha is also accessible by plane. Scheduled charter flights are available from Dar es Salaam, Selous, Serengeti, Arusha, Iringa and Mbeya through companies such as Safari Air Link, Flight Link and Coastal Aviation.

When to go

To see predators and large mammals, dry season (mid-May to December); to see birds, lush scenery and wildflowers, wet season (January to April).

Diving in Tanzania is a magical experience. The dive sites in Dar es Salaam, Lake Tanganyika, Mtwara, Mikindani, Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia rival those found in the Red Sea and deserve to place Tanzania on the map as a diving destination.

here are 25 PADI dive centres throughout the country, with skilled instructors and divemasters and world-class equipment and a number of liveabroads offering trips to Mafia, Pemba and Zanzibar.

In case of any accidents, there’s a fully operational decompression chamber in Zanzibar, which opened in 2006.

Whether you’re a novice or an experienced diver,

Tanzania has something for everyone, from the small wonders of colourful nudibranches to giant groupers, sharks and Napoleon Wrasse. The best diving is generally between October and February, when visibility can be up to 30 – 40 metres.

Zanzibar is home to the world famous Mnemba Atoll, a protected marine park with some of the best diving in East Africa.

Hawksbill and Green turtles rest on top of plate corals, oblivious to hovering divers snapping pictures. Lion fish hide beneath the reef, Moorish Idols dart through the corals and Clown Fish dance possessively around anemones. Turn to the sky and watch hundreds of fish, schooling and circling through the water, yellow snappers a vivid contrast to the blue of the water. It’s not uncommon to see White Tip Reef sharks and divers are

sometimes lucky enough to have a pod of dolphins as an escort on the way back to the dive centre or catch a glimpse of humpback whales with their calves.

Pemba is a treasure trove of marine life, better suited to experienced divers due to strong currents, making most dives drift dives.

Pemba’s corals are pristine.

Misali Island, once a hideout of Captain Kidd is now a marine conservation area rich in biodiversity, with over 40 different species of coral, 350 different species of fish and 5 different species of sea turtles. Out on the reefs, black snappers school around Coral Mountain, eagle rays and manta rays glide through the water with deadly grace, while lobsters and octopus peer 74

out at inquisitive divers from coral shelves. Green turtles perch on cabbage coral and hammerhead sharks have been seen coming in with the tide.

The Mafia Island situated along the course of Tanzania is an infamous diving site for the tourists. In the year 1996, a marine park was situated in this place which happens to be the biggest in East Africa. You can get to see some 42 kinds of corals and over 400 types of marine fishes that dwell here. In the Mafia Diving sites, there are great chances of witnessing the Whale Sharks. If you want some exclusive experience of scuba diving while on a trip to Tanzania, consider visiting this place. This place can surely be one of the

leading places for the best scuba diving in Tanzania.
