THE GREAT SERENGETI MIGRATION MARATHON 2021

An annual Marathon event that brings together professional, amateur and fun runners under one roof. This year the event will take place on 14th -15th August 2021 at Mugumu, Serengeti from 7am. The run will be of a half marathon, 10Km and 5.2km fun runs and it will later be advanced to a full Marathon run. This event will allow participants to not just witness the animal migration but be part of it by running between the groups of migrating wild animals along the Serengeti National Park. Participants will include both local and foreign, however; there will be special fun runs for local companies, institutions and special groups for special courses.

It is organized by the Serengeti Tourism Sports Agency (SETSA) which uses sports to promote tourism along the western side of the Serengeti National Park.

August - 2021 RHINO TOURISM INTRODUCED IN TANZANIA MKOMAZI PARK

ZANZIBAR INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL TO BOOST ISLAND TOURISM

Mkomazi National Park has been set as a Rhino Sanctuary where tourists across the world could visit and view the rare African black rhino protected inside the park. Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr. Damas Ndumbaro, launched Rhino Tourism in Mkomazi National Park. The Ministry hopes to target and attract tourists interested in going on picture rhino safaris. The government’s target is to attract 5 million tourists which will then increase tourism gains from the current $2.6 billion to $6 billion by the year 2025. Mkomazi is under the management of Tanzania National Parks (Tanapa). It is located some 112 km east of Moshi town in the Kilimanjaro region, between the northern and southern safari circuits. Rhino tourism could be easily combined with hiking of the neighboring Usambara or Pare mountains and a few days relaxing on the Indian Ocean beaches of Zanzibar.

ZIFF was launched 24 years ago with great success in Zanzibar. This year’s event took place from July 21 to 25 at Stone Town, Zanzibar’s leading tourist hot spot and a tourist heritage site.

Organizers of this year’s ZIFF have attracted over 240 films from 25 countries. Tanzania has 13 films while Kenya has 9, Uganda 5, and South Africa 5. The festival aims to raise awareness and promote international cinema as art, entertainment, and as an industry, promoting dialogue, human rights, and freedom. Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi supported organizers of the annual Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) and said the event would expose and develop the island’s tourism and heritage. President Mwinyi said at the Zanzibar State House that the festival will help to develop and advertise Zanzibar’s tourism. Mwinyi confirmed that the government will continue working together with ZIFF to ensure it continues to attain more achievements.

QATAR AIRWAYS AND RWANDAIR JOIN FORCES TO GIVE CUSTOMERS GREATER CHOICE

TANZANIA TO HOST MAJOR EAST AFRICAN REGIONAL TOURISM EXPO

Qatar Airways passengers will be able to explore even more of Africa following its new partnership with Rwanda’s flag carrier, RwandAir via their hubs at Doha and Kigali. As a part of the strategic partnership, the extensive interline agreement will give customers access to the networks of both airlines, providing a seamless travel experience and enhanced customer service including the frequent flyers programmes. Customers can pick and choose from over 160 destinations in the combined networks of both airlines, which are perfectly connected via their home hubs of Doha and Kigali. This latest cooperation comes hot on the heels of the airlines’ recent loyalty partnerships announcement, giving RwandAir Dream Miles and Qatar Airways Privilege Club loyalty members access to each other’s destinations with the opportunity to ‘earn and burn’ points across their reciprocal route networks.

Marketing tourism as the regional economic product, the East African states are going to hold a major tourism exhibition in October this year under the spirit of regional integration and regional tourism marketing drive. The first and a major regional tourism exhibition is set to take place in Tanzania, attracting the six member states of the East African Community (EAC) to showcase their tourist attractions under an umbrella of regional integration in tourism. Reports from the East African Community head offices in northern Tanzania’s tourist city of Arusha said that the first and major regional tourism exhibition is scheduled in October to attract participants from member countries of Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan. Tanzania Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Dr. Damas Ndumbaro had announced the regional tourism expo during a virtual meeting with the East African Community (EAC) Council of Ministers for Tourism.

Stone Town, or Mji Mkongwe in Swahili ( meaning “ancient town” ) , is the oldest part of Zanzibar City. The old town is built on a triangular peninsula of land on the western coast of the island and was awarded World Heritage Site status in 2000. ustification for the inscription includes its rich cultural fusion and harmonization; its great symbolic importance in the suppression of slavery; and the intense seaborne trading activity between Asia and Africa, which is illustrated today in the exceptional architecture

and urban structure of Stone Town.

K I LI MANJ ARO NATI ONAL P ARK

The K ilimanjaro National Park is located near Moshi, Tanzania.

It is centered on the iconic and dramatic snow-clad slopes of Mount K ilimanjaro, which covers an area of 75 3 km ( 29 1 sq uare miles) . In 19 73 , the mountain above the tree line was classified as a National Park and was opened to public access in , but it wasn’t until 19 87 UNESCO listed the park as a World Heritage Site.

K ONDOA ROCK ART S I TE

The K ondoa rock art site is a series of caves carved into the side of a hill looking out over the steppe. The cave site is nine kilometers off the main highway from K ondoa to Arusha, about 20 km north of K ondoa. The site has a spectacular collection of images from over 15 0 shelters depicting elongated people, animals, and hunting scenes. Today many of the shelters are still considered to have ritual associations with the

people who live nearby, re ecting their beliefs and cosmological traditions.

TH E NGORONGORO CONS ERV ATI ON AREA

The Ngorongoro Conservation rea NC boasts the finest blend of landscapes, wildlife, people and archaeological sites in Africa and is situated 180 km west of Arusha. The rich pasture and permanent water of the crater oor supports a large resident population of wildlife

of up to 25 ,000 predominantly grazing animals.

The conservation area is administered by the NCA Authority, and its boundaries follow the boundary of the Ngorongoro Division of Ngorongoro District. It covers an area of 8,288 km ( 3 ,200 sq uare miles) .

one of largest fauna reserves of the world, located in the south of Tanzania. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 19 82 due to the diversity of its wildlife and undisturbed nature. The reserve is home to typical savannah animals such as elephants, hippopotami, the rare African Wild Dog and crocodiles, which are all found in larger numbers compared to any other African park.

S ERENGETI NATI ONAL P ARK

The Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s oldest park, and one of the world’s last great wildlife refuges, hence its World Heritage Site status. It is most famous

for its annual migration of over one million white bearded ( or brindled) wildebeest and 200,000 zebra. The park covers 14,76 3 km ( 5 ,700 sq uare miles) of grassland plains and savannah as well as riverine forest and woodlands.

The park lies in the north of the country, bordered to the north by the national Tanzania and K enyan border, where it is contiguous with the Masai Mara National Reserve.

The remains of these two great East African ports admired by early European explorers are situated on two small islands near

the coast. F rom the 13 th to the 16 th century, the merchants of K ilwa dealt in gold, silver, pearls, perfumes, Arabian crockery, Persian earthenware and Chinese porcelain; much of the trade in the Indian Ocean thus passed through their hands. Serious archaeological investigation began in the 19 5 0s. In 19 81 it was declared a World Heritage Site, and noted visitor sites are the Great Mosq ue, the Mkutini Palace and some remarkable ruins. However, the ruins are also on the List of World Heritage Sites in Danger. The list constitutes a call to improve their safe guarding and is designed to rally national and international efforts for their preservation.

The winners of the NMB 5K Run 2021 were Inyasi Nicodemus from Arusha as first winner, followed by Sylvester Naali and Emmanuel Gadiye (from Police Force) while Aisha Luvuma from Arusha became first winner for women, followed by Valentina Michael from Arusha and Catherine Lange (from Mafunzo).

Speaking after the marathon, Dr Mwinyi called on stakeholders and sports enthusiasts to promote the beauty of the revived ZIM and make it gain a global status.

He directed the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage to prepare a calendar for the International Marathon so as to enable stakeholders in the tourism industry advertise the race at the International level through Trade Fairs and Tourism Exhibitions and festivals held annually to make it popular.

The ZIM 2021, included a distance of 21 km, 10 km, and 5 km with a cash money, the highest being 3m/- for the first and 500,000/- to below, and an additional 400-meter race as well as a race for children and people with disabilities got a special recognition, featured about 2000 athletes from Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, France and Switzerland and locals Zanzibar.

He said having the calendar for the grand race has to be in line with the main objective of reintroducing the race last held in 2003, which is to make it one of the attractions to boost the Isles tourism industry, create employment opportunities especially for the unemployed youth and contribute to the

growth of the national economy.

“The government is already committed to co-operate in reviving and developing different sports as well as ensure that the new international Marathon is held annually in Zanzibar, also a step towards providing opportunity to the talented athletes to compete internationally,” he said as he commended the organisers to revive the marathon after more than a decade of suspension.

Dr Mwinyi said his Eighth phase government has been encouraging innovation and having better policy and environment, to facilitate the implementation of development programs including sports and other new tourist attractions to boost tourism industry.

Gombe National Park

The ancient forests may look tranquil and serene, but don’t let looks fool you. Underneath the canopy, adventure awaits. Home to many marvellous creatures, one stands out in particular. Get ready for a thrilling encounter with our closest genetic relative: the chimpanzee.

Gombe is one of the smallest of Tanzania’s national parks and is easily made up by the sheer excitement of meeting its famous inhabitants. It was Jane Goodall the world reknown conservationist that gave the fully habituated chimpanzees their celebrity status. Her behavioural research program started over half a century ago and is the oldest of its kind in the world, running until this day. Gombe is a haven for researchers, in part due to the large group sizes, with the Kasekela group of at least 40 chimps being the largest.

Eight different primate species are present Herbivores and carnivores are a rarity on the steep Rift Wall and its fringes, making Gombe a dreamland for walking safaris.

open areas in the park – prepare yourself for some remarkable encounters. Chimpanzees have true character that they like to express through wild gestures and yelps. With 98% of our genes shared; the feeling of bonding between our species can be a truly magical moment. Although the fierce display of a dominant male can be frightening, no harm is intended; he is just showing his power. Don’t run away, just stay calm and make yourself small!

Gombe is a dreamland for walking safaris But chimpanzees are not the only primates here; no less than eight different species are present. Scan the forest canopy for red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys and colobusses while staying on the lookout for the habituated beachcomber olive baboons, themselves an object of another scientific study. Two nocturnal species occur: the Senegal galago and the South African galago (or bushbaby).

Another remarkable character is the palm-nut vulture; a nearvegetarian common to Lake Tanganyika that prefers fruit over carcasses. The lake itself lies on the base of the Rift Valley and harbours about 350 various species of fish, most of them endemic.

• After being designated as a game reserve in 1943, it became a national park in 1968.

• It covers 56 km2 – plus a 100 m wide strip of coastal water – and stretches 13 km from north to south.

• Height: 773 m to 1,500 m (Mitumba).

• Average temperatures: 26-30 °C (daytime) and 14-17 °C (night-time).

• Dry season: mid-May – October – November, wet season: November – mid-May (less rainy in January – February), no seasonal changes in the dense forest.

• Best time to visit: wet season, for plants and insects and better chimpanzee spotting (they don’t roam as far in the wet season).

• Just like Mahale National Park, Gombe is a rather remote park, only accessible by boat.

• To get to Kigoma: there are scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam and Arusha (private flights organised by safari companies), rail services from Dar es Salaam and a ferry service from Mpulungu in Zambia. Or go by road (4 days): from Dar es Salaam first 980 km on tarmac, then 780 km on earth road (difficult in the wet season).

• From Kigoma to Kasekela: by local lake-taxi (up to four hours), or motorboat (two hours, bookings through the park).

he 24th ZIFF Festival of the Dhow Countries came to a thunderous close amidst fanfare of award winners at the glorious Old Fort amphitheatre in Zanzibar. The resplendent location was bathed in bright lights as the evening wound up towards the climax of the festival- the awards to the best and brightest in African and International films at the Zanzibar International Film Festival.

The Guest of honour, the European Union’s Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr Manfredo Fanti could not hold his delight as he spoke to the packed audience. “We are now part of the ZIFF family”, he declared, “and we promise to be here with you at the celebration of the 25th anniversary of ZIFF next year”.

As the jury members came up to award the winners, nationalist banter came to the fore as Kenya began to grab many of the early honors. However, while Kenya was the top grosser so were winners from diverse nations including Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Singapore and Sudan.

Get movin

Men who engage in moderate exercise routines (about 1 hour of exercise, 3 times per week) have been found to have better sperm results than men who do not exercise or exercise less than that amount per week (Vaamond et al. 2009). Regular exercise in moderation helps keep body weight at normal levels and relieves stress and anxiety, both of which contribute to proper production of testosterone and healthy sperm. Aim for about one hour of moderately intense cardiovascular exercise three to four times a week.

Get lenty o rest

Conversely, men with very schedules generally have sperm (Vaamond et al. surprisingly, intense exercise between extreme workouts cellular damage, which can quality and quantity of m

Get clean

Excessive smoking and drinking have been linked to a host of negative health outcomes, HUK IV[O OH]L KL[YPTLU[HS LќLJ[Z VU H JV\WSL»Z ability to conceive. Smoking tobacco has been linked to low sperm counts and sluggish motility, while long-term use of marijuana can result in abnormally developed sperm.

Alcohol can also reduce the production of normally formed sperm needed for a successful pregnancy. Stay away from steroids as well, as they have been found to cause testicular shrinkage, which can result in infertility. As much as possible, avoid environmental toxins such as chemicals, radiation, heavy metal exposure, and pollution, which have all been linked to low sperm production.

Get your vitamins

Eat lots of foods high in antioxidants (carotenes, vitamins A, C, E and selenium) such as green leafy vegetables, kale, JHYYV[Z JP[Y\Z IYVJJVSP JH\SPÅV^LY HUK yams. You may want to consider taking supplements, especially if your vitamin C or zinc levels are low. Vitamin C (2,000 to 6,000 milligrams daily) helps prevent sperm from clumping or sticking together, thus improving the chances for fertility.

Zinc supplementation (100 to 200 mg daily) has been shown to increase testosterone levels, sperm count and sperm motility. High zinc sources include oysters, organ meats, lean beef, turkey, lamb, herring, wheat germ, legumes and nuts. Other nutrients that have been shown to improve sperm counts include essential fatty acids (9 to 12 grams daily), chromium (1,000 mcg daily), selenium (200 mcg daily), copper (2 mg daily), vitamin E (800 IU KHPS` JVLUa`TL 8 (400mg daily) HUK B-complex vitamins (50 mg daily).

Although my wife and I typically leave home for a birding excursion well before dawn, we still encountered some ridiculously congested traffic during a recent trip there while on route to our destination. Public transport clogged the roads as people poured into the city from the rural outskirts; overburdened trucks crashed through potholes and over misshapen speed bumps; pedestrians weaved through moving traffic creating a tapestry as dense as a Persian rug; and streams of men on bicycles commanded valuable space on the tarmac with their teetering loads of charcoal, tomatoes, and eggs. Indeed, leaving downtown by car on a Saturday morning is not for the timid.”

We were on our way to Pugu Hills, where a few hundred hectares of coastal scrub and woodland still remain, more or less in its natural state. Originally, I was hoping to visit the larger public reserve, but after investigating the practicality of both options, I figured it was easiest to book a visit to Pugu Hills, a small private reserve that is adjacent to the stateprotected land. Ultimately, this proved to be a good course of action, as the habitat at Pugu Hills was varied and teeming with birds 50

Dar Life I AUGUST 2021

and the infrastructure for visiting birders was more than adequate, with several trails for walking as well as a variety of delicious options for lunch. Our host, Kik van den Heuvel, later confirmed our decision as she showed us some disappointing beforeand-after photos portraying the environmental destruction of the public reserve in recent years, principally due to illegal charcoal

production.

Arriving at the entrance gate around 7am, we first encountered a family group of Crowned Hornbills in a tall and sparsely leafed tree. This transitional habitat between cultivated land and woodland would prove particularly fruitful on this sunny morning, as we found Speckled Mousebird, Cardinal Woodpecker,

Green-Winged Pytilia, Black Cuckoo-Shrike, and Red-Billed Fire finch all in the vicinity. We also briefly witnessed a magnificent raptor on the wing, flying low to the ground as it glided through the trees in search of prey. There are a bewildering number of species of hawks, eagles, and kites in this region, though, and I didn’t get a good enough look to identify this raptor. excursion was the Eastern Nicator that appeared briefly from dense cover. The field guide describes this species as being vocal but reclusive, and we were no doubt lucky just to get a look at the bird, much less a photograph of it.

The highlight of our morning was no doubt encountering a good-sized mixed flock that we followed for an hour as it moved slowly through the dense brush along one of the secluded trails.

Although each new bird species observed in the flock was a delightful surprise for us, several new birds in general were simply stunning. The Black-Throated Wattle-Eye took us aback with its ant bird-like qualities, a diverse and cryptic family of birds found in the neotropics. However instead of having a red-colored eye ring, this bird had red skin flaps raised around its eyes. This pair of smart black and white birds foraged slowly, making a unique clicking noise as it moved along. A pair of vigilant Narina Trogons was also a nice find, although I’ve never been 52

very enthralled by this phlegmatic family of birds. The Red-Capped Robin-Chat also enchanted us, as it swooped in at close range in the undergrowth and proceeded to flick through the leaf litter almost at our feet.

Afterwards Aimee and I climbed the hill to get a better perspective of the greater area, walking along the firebreak between Pugu Hills and the state-protected reserve.

As it was near midday at this point, there wasn’t much to see in terms of birds, except for two huge raptors perched in the distance (I had left my birding scope in the car, which is where it always seems to be when I most need it). We decided to make one last circuit of the nature trail before lunch. This time we found a marvelous male Green-Winged Pytilia, one of the region’s several intricately patterned waxbills. A pair of Cardinal Woodpeckers also caught our attention, but the most unusual bird of the

entrance road and picking up a few more neat birds, including Brown-Hooded Kingfisher, we checked in with the host and hit the nature trails.

Before leaving for the day, and the harrowing drive home, we made sure to check out the accommodations for a possible future visit, noting that the rooms were made out of canvas and selfcontained like a yurt, complete with traditional Tanzanian four-post beds. In front of the bandas were rows of flowering shrubs at which a noisy group of sunbirds was busy feeding. Miniscule but lovely Collared Sunbirds seemed to be everywhere around us, but I was struck by a larger and dull-colored species, the Olive Sunbird, that has a small, orange stripe at the base of its bill. hen the colours mix on a fabric to form bold, vibrant designs, you get a stunning African print.

Tanzanian designers are not letting that opportunity pass by, they use all their imagination to create masterpieces.

They are claiming the fashion industry stage from the Swahili Fashion Week in Dar es Salaam to the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in South Africa. Tanzanian designers are pushing the

boundaries with a simple “Kitenge” leaving masterpieces in their wake.

Every month Dar Life dedicates this section to young emerging and well-known designers who want to create brands and use the fashion platform as a stepping stone towards achieving their dream.

This month we meet Jamilla Vera Swai whose ideas in designing clothes and accessories are

amazing, you must watch out!

Born in August 1975, Jamilla’s love affair with fashion started at the tender age of 7, when she came across her auntie’s fashion sketches. At the age of 14 while she was still in high school, she started modeling for adverts on a local TV station in Maputo as well as designing for the agency she was signed with, Estudio Stilo.

Being of a petite stature and not being able to model full time,

Not being content with just studying, she co-founded SuturCouture in 2000. She has participated in various fashion shows in Nairobi, Magadi and Dar-es-salaam, where she has gained recognition. With her ideas and persona, she quickly made an impact on advertising

agencies who hired her to work as a costume designer on TV adverts such as Pilsner ice, Konyagi ice, Kencell and Aids Awareness Campaign.

In 2002, she returned to Dar es Salaam and established JamillaVeraSwai Studio. Since then she has participated in various festival shows through the years, including The Swahili Fashion Week, Mozambique Fashion Week, South Africa Fashion Week and several others.

Her numerous clientele include local celebrities and regular

career women from all walks of life. Besides supplying her designs in her own studio, they are also available in some retails shops in Dar es salaam and Zanzibar - Tanzania, Nairobi - Kenya and North Carolina - United States of America (USA).

Today she is proud to present fashion made in Dar es Salaam to the world and brand outfits to women who infuse exotic vibrant style, glamour and sophistication into their professional and social lifestyle.

Jamilla concentrated on what she was doing best, which was designing. To perfect her skills, she joined Institute de Bela Artes in Maputo to study fashion then later on moved to Fashion College International in Nairobi to complete her studies.

Ingredients

1 package ramen noodles, c shed a o pac et d sca ded 1/4 cup sliced almonds 1 c p s n o e seeds 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, melted 1 head romaine lettuce, washed and dried One 5-ounce bag baby spinach 1 pint strawberries, hulled and thinly sliced 1 cup grated Parmesan

Directions

For the salad: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. In a small bowl, mix the ramen noodles, al onds s n o e seeds and melted butter. Transfer to a baking sheet and toast in the oven, stirring occasionally, until browned, about 10 minutes.

Dressing:

3/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup red vinegar 3/4 cup vegetable oil 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1/2 teaspoons salt 2 cloves garlic, minced

Remove from the oven and set aside to cool.

Tear the lettuce and combine with the spinach, strawberries and cheese in a large salad bowl.

For the dressing: Dissolve the sugar in the vinegar. Combine the oil, paprika, salt and garlic and then add to the sugar-vine-

gar mixture. Mix well and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Just before serving, sprinkle the crunchy topping over the salad green and toss the salad with enough dressing to coat the greens.

owhere else in Africa does such a varied cast of animals gather to graze, live, hunt and die. On one of Ngorongoro’s Crater you will encounter some of the 30,000 animals in the crater’s diverse range of habitats: swampy wetlands, open savannah, woodland and lake - all within the steep rock walls that climb through thick forest some 600m to the rim.

The Ngorongoro Crater, one of the eighth wonder of the world, is set in northern Tanzania, s rin rt of t e Seren e plains to the north-west and with the towns of Arusha, Moshi and Mount Kilimanjaro, to the east, and forms part of t e uni ue Seren e ecosystem. It has also been believed to have been taller than the famous i im n ro efore its in c e volcano collapsed and formed an unbroken caldera crater, 610 meters deep, 13 mile (20km) wide about two million years ago.

THE MAASAI COMMUNITY OF THE NGORONGORO CRATER For thousands of years, a succession of c e er in people moved into the Ngorongoro area, lived there for some me n t en mo e on some mes force out y ot er tribes. way of life allowing them to live in harmony with the wildlife and the environment. The Ngorongoro Crater is 19.2 kilometer in diameter, 610 meters in depth and 304 square kilometres in area. LAETOLI AND OLDUVAI GORGE At Laetoli, west of Ngorongoro Crater, hominid footprints were preserved in volcanic rock 3.6 million years ago and represent some of the earliest signs of mankind in the world. Three separate tracks of a smallbrained upright- walking early hominid, Australopithecus Afarensis, a creature about 1.2 to 1.4 meters high, were found.

Imprints of these are displayed in the Olduvai museum. Bull elephants of the Ngorongoro Crater regularly descend to the Ngorongoro Cr ter oor e r e ree in herds wander throughout the forest rim ere t ey n the most suitable food. The steep inner slopes provide a habitat for dikdik and the rare mountain reedbuck. J ackals thrive in the crater and bat eared foxes live in the short grass areas. Predatory animals in the Ngorongoro Crater like leopards, lions, cheetahs, several c ts i e o t e un nt wildlife; large packs of hyenas roam the Ngorongoro crater, making their own kills and scavenging from others.
