DITF, which is popularly known as the “Saba Saba” Fair, marks its 45th year and will run from 23rd June - 13th July 2021 at the Mwalimu J.K. Nyerere Trade Fair Exhibition Grounds, Kilwa Road in Dar es Salaam with theme: Agricultural Crop Processing for Continuous Sustainable Development. It is a major promotional event organised by the Board of External Trade (BET) to spearhead Tanzania’s business endeavors. ZIFF is one of the highlights of the island’s cultural calendar, with thousands of people attending every year. Filmmakers, film lovers, and tourists all flock to the nine-day event that celebrates music, the arts and the spirit of the island itself.

Known as the biggest cultural event of its kind in East Africa, the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) will take place on 21st – 25th July, 2021 in Stone Town, Zanzibar.

Now in its 24th year, with a record 400 films submitted from 40 countries, this year’s competition promises to be the most exciting to date.

July - 2021 YOUNGEST AFRICAN WOMAN CONQUERS MOUNT EVEREST

Tanzanian woman and the youngest African female has conquered Mount Everest, setting a record of being the first Tanzanian woman to reach the highest point in the world. Rawan arrived back in Northern Tanzania amid a grand reception by her parents and a section of Tanzanian tourism officials after staying in Nepal for 2 months during her Mount Everest climbing venture.

Saray Khumalo was the first African woman to conquer Mount Everest on May 16, 2019, after several climbing expeditions on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and other mountains in the world to raise funds for childrens’ education and libraries in Africa. The peak of Mount Everest on the Nepal-China border is the world’s highest at 8,850 meters above sea level. She has risen to be the second Tanzanian national to reach the peak of Mount Everest, 9 years after an experienced Mount Kilimanjaro porter, Mr. Wilfred Moshi, raised the Tanzanian flag on the world’s highest mountain. He set the record in May 2012 after spending 10 weeks trekking the mountain.

- Martin Mhando- ZIFF CEO A key theme of the festival’s Workshops is the focus on women. The festival will be a hybrid affair with the pandemic in place. The festival will take off with a Webinar – Women in Conversation on the gender struggles in the film industry.

A workshop on acting for the camera for Women run by women including Tanzania’s own Seko Shamte will be a major attraction to ZIFF. Seko Shamte’s film Binti will open the festival making it only the third time that a Tanzanian film has opened the festival.

The Masterclass will involve 12 selected actresses to undertake an ACTING FOR THE CAMERA workshop with a view of enunciating the Gaze of the woman film director. So, while the training is essentially about acting it is also meant to entice the actresses to begin the journey towards becoming film

directors.

Other workshops include a Writing for the Screen workshop to be run by one of Hollywood’s master Dialogue writers, CHRISTOPHER DOHERTY. Doherty, writer of the blockbusters Baghdad Café and Name of the Rose, has volunteered his services to ZIFF to lead a workshop that would unfold new talents in the industry.

The workshop will explore the rules and principles of successful drama and comedy. Why writing is rewriting and when not to overdo it.

The Women Panorama, a key program of the festival, will also focus on women film productivity, with the EU supporting the screening of short films and animations made with women in creative positions of the films.

Screenings in Nungwi, Paje, Jambiani and Makunduchi will also allow audiences to share their experiences with women filmmakers from Europe.

At ZIFF this year, we again shall stop the festival to talk about this most urgent matter to Africans and Tanzanians in particular since we have many stories about

our fights against Covid 19 and Malaria.

Malaria has killed more people than all other diseases and wars on Earth combined. What if there was a herb that could defeat the deadly malaria parasite and save a thousand lives per day, every day? Sounds good? Not everybody thinks so. Likewise indigenous knowledge around both Malaria and Covid 19, used extensively in Africa, continues to suffer as nations battle to understand how best to utilize technology without putting lives in danger as well as without undermining indigenous knowledge. This is the Difficult Dialogue of our days.

The Blue Economy is a factory of opportunities for Zanzibar Youth Photography, it is a key link to Tourism that affords a huge scope for creative entrepreneurship including photographing landscapes, portraits, culture, food and wildlife. The objective of this workshop is to learn how to represent Zanzibar’s beauty through photography as a creative enterprise.

COCO BEACH Also known as Oyster Bay Beach, featuring a lively atmosphere, Coco beach presents a perfect avenue for everyone to enjoy the ocean. SOUTH BEACH The south beach is also referred to as “Kingamboni” and it’s the standout choice of the many beaches in the city. It has a picture-perfect setting with powdery sand, pristine waters, and waves that are ideal for swimming. It is located off Kigamboni Road on the south coast of the city. If you are looking for the best of regular live music, the south beach provides a perfect option. MBUDYA ISLAND BEACH Mbudya Island beach is one of the most untouched beaches in Tanzania. While the island is no secret to locals, many tourists have no idea that it exists. You can get to the island by taking a 25-minute ferry ride from White Sands Beach Resort. You can also take a 10-minute boat ride from

Msasani Slipway to the island.

You can hole up on this piece of paradise and enjoy its seclusion and solitude. The island has no hotel or restaurant but you can enjoy some delicious grilled seafood freshly caught from the sea with a beer or soda in a banda.

BONGOYO ISLAND BEACH This leisure island is a marine conservation area and it features beautiful beaches and a range of fun activities including snorkelling and swimming. You can get here by taking a boat from the Slipway shopping centre on the peninsula. The island is uninhabited so you can only spend a day here and go back to the city. When you get here, you can rent a banda – the little huts on the beach, relax and order your lunch. The beach combines a spectacular outlook, exceptional snorkelling conditions and walking opportunities along the stretches of the coastline.

KUNDUCHI BEACH “Remarkable”, “postcardperfect”, “speechless” are some of the words used to describe Kunduchi Beach by tourists when

they step on its shores. The white sandy beach sits on the lap of the gorgeous Indian Ocean and it’s perfect for an ultimate getaway.

If you feel like lazing around, sink into the soft sand and let in the breath-taking sunshine.

BAHARI BEACH Bahari beach situated at the North of Dar es Salaam is a perfect private paradise with plenty of space, consistent waves and a soothing atmosphere that makes for a great relaxing spot throughout the year. A very quiet and calm place, Bahari is perfect to relax, read a book, see some local life, swim in the ocean and drink a few cocktails at the local beach bar. “Haji Chilonga’s first exhibition took place in 1995 at Bamayu Gallery in Tanzania. He has since exhibited his work in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, USA and Canada. He has participated in three international art workshops and four solo exhibitions. Recently Chilonga ´s style was picked up by a very skillful young artist named Thobias Minzi, who had some success at an AFRICA/NOW exhibition, much to dismay of Chilonga.

Recently Haji Chilonga visited the USA and we hope we will get some interesting observations from him on AFRUM.”

H

aji Chilonga was born on January 24th, 1969 in Lukuledi in Southern Tanzania. He comes from a pottery and blacksmith family background.

As he was interested in drawings since he was young, he started off earning his living by painting commercial advertisements. He became a serious painter in 1992 when he was tutored by more experienced artists. At this time when Chilonga started to paint, he drew a few artists to himself. For instance he taught Aly Kitogo and he considerably influenced Florian Ludovick. All of these painters had very similar styles initially, but as time went they each found their own personal style and developed a distinctive imprint. Chilonga prefers

to paint portraits and local life situations.

DL - What inspired you to start painting?

Chilonga – For the most part I got inspired just by observing daily life around me.

DL - How long have you been an artist?

Chilonga - I have been serious about being an artist since 1992.

DL - What mediums do you like to use?

Chilonga - I prefer acrylic over oil paints.

DL - Tell us about your first exhibition. When was it?

Chilonga – I was so excited to have the opportunity for the first time. It was held at JULY 2021 I Dar Life

Chilonga - I work from my imagination for my abstract style paintings, but sometimes I paint from real life too.

Chilonga - There are so many things I can’t mention all of them, but I’m always inspired when I travel and meet new people and new challenges.

DL - Where do you feel art is going?

Chilonga - In my country the current state of art is not good, because very few people have an understanding of art and its role in society.

DL - What is the role of the artist in society?

Chilonga - Musicians and actors have come to play an important role in society, but visual artists still have a very long way to go to be respected.

DL - What technique do you use? Which is more important to you, the subject of your painting, or the way it is executed?

Chilonga - The technique I use is abstract, but the most important thing to me is the subject of the piece.

DL - Do you prefer a perfect smooth technique or a more energetic expressive technique and why?

Chilonga - To me it doesn’t matter, either smooth or energetic expressive technique.

DL - What do you think makes your work stand out?

Chilonga – My passion comes through in my work and I think people can sense that.

Sun rays can wreak havoc on our skin, especially as the depleting Ozone layer increases the number of harmful UV rays that directly penetrate it. As a result, we face numerous skin problems such as premature aging, black spots, redness and blotches which make us look older than we actually are. It therefore becomes important to take care of our skin to keep it healthy and radiant.

Natural ingredients are often inexpensive, can be easily prepared and applied, and have few negative side effects. Following are some natural beauty recipes which you can make and use at home.

NATURAL SKIN CARE CLEANSER RECIPES Kiwi Facial Cleansing Cream

This natural cleansing cream can be used regularly without side effects. This mixture will deep clean the skin down to the pores, removing dirt and trapped bacteria to leave the skin soft and supple. * Pulp from 1 peeled kiwi * 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt * 1 tablespoon of almond oil * 1 tablespoon of honey * 1 teaspoon of finely grounded almonds

Procedure: Put the kiwi pulp in a food processor. Then add yogurt, almond oil, grounded almond and honey and

blend well until a thick cream. (Hint: You can mix by hand if you do not have a food processor.) Apply the paste to your face and neck by gently rubbing it in circular motion, then wash your face with cool water. Your skin will immediately show improvement, but for best results use once or twice daily. Store face wash mixture in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Buttermilk and Fennel Seeds Cleanser for Oily Skin This is a useful recipe for oily skin, as it helps reduce oil secretion as well as deep cleanses. * ½ cup of buttermilk * 2 tablespoons of crushed fennel seeds

Procedure: Heat the buttermilk on a double boiler and add crushed fennel seeds. Let it boil for 30 minutes, and then remove the mixture from heat and let it sit for another 2 hours. Apply to face and neck in a circular motion and rinse off with cool water. Your skin will immediately show improvement, but for best results use once or twice daily. Store the face wash mixture in the freezer for up to two weeks.

RECIPES FOR NATURAL FACE MASKS Orange Peels Natural Bleach Mask * Orange peels from 1 orange * 1 cup of milk

Procedure: Dry the orange peels under the heat of the sun until they are dry enough to be pulverized into pieces. Mix the powder and the milk thoroughly and apply this paste to the skin for 25 minutes, then rinse off with water. Repeat this daily or on alternate days for fairer skin.

Honey and Oatmeal Face Mask

Healthy, gowing skin is the epitome of beauty. A homemade honey and oatmeal face mask exfoliates the skin to make it radiant. This recipe is safe and natural, and can be made easily at home. * ¼ cup of finely grounded oatmeal * 4 to 5 tablespoons of honey * ½ cup of water

Procedure: First, cook the oatmeal in ½ cup of water for about 15 minutes. Then set aside to cool off for another 15 minutes. Add honey to the mixture and blend well. Apply the mask to your face and neck and let it dry for about 20 minutes. Completely wash off the mask with cool water.

SIMPLE SECRET FOR BASIC LIP BALM Smooth, full lips are the sign of youth. Natural ingredients can help retain moisture in your lips and prevent them from chapping. This recipe for basic lip balm can be prepared at home and stored. * 1/2 ounce of beeswax * 4 ounces of almond oil, preferably sweet almond oil * 1 teaspoon jojoba beads * Few drops of essential oil * Few drops of essence of your choice

Procedure: Put almond oil in a measuring glass and then add beeswax to it. Heat the mixture in the microwave or in a pot on the stove till the wax melts. Stir in jojoba beads and essential oil, as well as the essence. Pour the mixture in a clean jar and let it cool. Once the mixture settles you can store it in a cool place and use it as lip balm.

NATURAL SOLUTIONS FOR HAIR CARE There are also natural remedies available for hair problems. Here are some quick natural hair care tips: * If you are suffering from dandruff, you can benefi t from using lemon juice on your scalp. Dab a ball of cotton in lemon juice and apply it in the scalp. You can use it before bathing, and then wash your hair thoroughly. * Olive oil is a great solution for dry hair. Applying a few teaspoons of olive oil to your locks will improve their health as well as add shine to them. * Mayonnaise is a great conditioner. Massage your hair with a half a cup of mayonnaise and rinse it out completely for bouncy and shiny hair. * Mix egg whites with yogurt to prepare a paste for your hair. Apply the paste to your hair and let it sit for about 30 minutes, then wash out with shampoo. This will improve the overall health of your hair. * Vinegar adds shine. Add two tablespoons of vinegar to a cup of water and wash your hair with it after shampooing.

HISTORICAL AND UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES OF TANZANIA Tanzania is a country, which encompasses an astonishing history and a wealth of natural wonders; therefore it is no surprise that most sites have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

T

anzania has a long history of human habitation stretching back to our most distant ancestors. The socalled ‘bantu migrations’, occurring between 3,000 and 5,000 years ago, brought agriculture and pastoral knowledge to the area as competing groups spread over the country in search of fertile soil and plentiful grazing for their herds.

On the Swahili Coast, Indian Ocean Trade began as early as 400 BCE between Greece and Azania, as the area was commonly known.

European missionaries and explorers mapped the interior of the country by following wellworn caravan routes, including Burton and Speke who in 1857 journeyed to find the source of the Nile. Traditional ways of life remained largely intact until the arrival of German colonizers in the late 19th century.

towns and trading settlements attracted bantu-speaking peoples from the African hinterland. They settled around mercantile areas and often facilitated trading with the Arabs and Persians, who bartered for slaves, gold, ivory, and spices, sailing north with the monsoon wind.

Between the 13th and 15th centuries, the settlements of Kilwa Kisiwani and the Zanzibar Archipelago reached their peak, with a highly cosmopolitan population of Indian, Arab and African merchants trading in luxury goods that reached as far as China. The completion of Portuguese domination in 1525 meant that trade, for a short time, was lessened, but rival Omani Arab influences soon took control of the caravan routes and regained complete control of the islands, even going so far as to make Zanzibar the capital of Oman in the 1840’s.

German influence on the Tanzanian mainland, slowly suppressed the slave trade and brought the area under the influence of the Empire.

Local rebellions in German East Africa, most notably the Maji Maji rebellion from 1905 to 1907, slowly weakened the colonizer’s grip on the nation and at the end of the First World War Germany ceded Tanganyika to English administration. Under the leadership of Julius Nyerere of TANU, popularly referred to as Mwalimu or ‘teacher’ Tanganyika achieved full independence in 1962. Meanwhile, a violent revolution in Zanzibar ousted the Omani sultancy and established a one-party state under the Afro-Shirazi party in 1963. A year later, the United Republic of Tanzania was formed, unifying the Tanganyika mainland with the semi-autonomous islands of the Zanzibar Archipelago, and merging TANU and the ASP to form CCM, Chama cha Mapinduzi, the Party of the Revolution which rules Tanzania to the present day.

The remains of two great East African ports admired by early European explorers are situated on two small islands near the coast. From the 13th to the 16th century, the merchants of Kilwa dealt in gold, silver, pearls, perfumes, Arabian crockery, Persian earthenware and Chinese porcelain; much of the trade in the Indian Ocean thus passed through their hands. Serious archaeological investigation began in the 1950s. In 1981 it was declared a World Heritage Site.

KILIMANJARO NATIONAL PARK

The Kilimanjaro National park is located near Moshi, Tanzania. It is centered on the iconic and dramatic snow clad slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, which covers an area of 753km (291 square miles). In 1973, the mountain above the tree line was classified as a National Park and was opened to public access in 1977, but it wasn’t until 1987 UNESCO listed the park as a World Heritage Site.

KONDOA ROCK ART SITES

The Kondoa rock art site is a series of caves carved into the side of a hill looking out over the steppe. The cave site is 9km off the main highway from Kondoa to Arusha, about 20km north of Kondoa. The site has a spectacular collection of images from over 150 shelters depicting elongated people, animals, and hunting scenes.

SELOUS GAME RESERVE The Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s oldest park, and one of the world’s last great wildlife refuges, hence its World Heritage Sites status. It is most famous for its annual migration of over one million white bearded (or brindled) wildebeests and 200,000 zebras. The park covers 14,763km (5,700 square miles) of grassland plains and savannah as well as forest and woodlands.

The Selous Game Reserve covers a total area of 54,600km (21,081 square miles) and is one of largest fauna reserves of the world, located in the south of Tanzania. It was designated >>

Stone Town or Mji Mkongwe in Swahili meaning “ancient town” is the old part of Zanzibar City. The old town is built on a triangular peninsula of land on the western coast of the island and was awarded World Heritage Site status in 2000.

The port town of Lindi in southwestern Tanzania, was the final top for slave caravans from lake Nyasa during the heyday of the Zanzibari sultans. In 1909, a team of German palaeontologists unearthed the remains of several dinosaur bones in Tendanguru, including the species Brachiosaurus brancai, the largest discovered dinosaur in the world.

MIKINDANI Another central port in the Swahili Coasts network of the India Ocean trade. In the 15th century Mikindani’s reach extended as far as the Africa

hinterlands of the Congo and Zambia. The area became a centre of German colonial administration in the 1880s and a chief exporter of sisal coconuts.

ZANZIBAR The most obvious historical site in Zanzibar is Stone Town, a world Heritage Site and the oldest continuously inhabited city in East Africa, but Zanzibar has much more to offer visitors.
