Mara Mara Tented

Lodge -

Let nature inspire you

Modern, clean-lined tented camp with a traditional African feel, Mara Mara Tented Lodge has one of the Serengeti’s most coveted locations. Just a short drive takes you from the serenity of camp to the exciting drama of the annual Wildebeest Migration’s most anticipated chapter: the river crossings. Arriving around June – but sometimes sooner or later, depending on regional rainfall the wildebeest herds have to cross the rivers in order to reach the Masai Mara on the other side; giant crocodiles have been waiting patiently and the result is nature at its most heart-stopping.”

Towns & Cities A Guide to Tanzania

ARUSHA

Located in the north of Tanzania, in the shadow of Mount Meru, Arusha is the safari capital of the country. Tourists usually overnight here before their safari around the Northern Circuit. Built by the Germans as a centre of colonial administration, Arusha is now one of the country’s most prosperous towns. The site for the United Nations Criminal Tribunal and the headquarters for the tripartite Commission for East African 26

co-operation, Arusha is also the centre for the trading of Tanzanite, a rare gemstone only found in Tanzania. The National Natural History Museum, with its collection of antiquities demonstrating Tanzania’s natural heritage, is housed in an old German Fort in the centre of Arusha while the nearby Cultural Heritage centre and its adjacent, four storey Art Gallery are also well worth a visit.

BAGAMOYO

Bagamoyo is a centre for dhow sailboat building on the Tanzanian coast. A quiet village with a few German colonial buildings still standing, it was once one the most important trading ports on the East African coast, and the penultimate stop of slave and ivory caravans travelling on foot from Lake Tanganyika on their way to Zanzibar. Missionaries active in abolishing the slave trade made Bagamoyo a centre for their

activities. The name ‘Bagamoyo’ means ‘lay down your heart’ in Kiswahili, this is particularly poignant given that the town was the last stop on the mainland before captured slaves were sent to destinations unknown from Zanzibar, never to return.

DODOMA

Located in the heartland of Tanzania, &QFQOC KU VJG PCVKQPoU QHƂEKCN RQNKVKECN capital and the seat of Government in the country. Comparably much smaller and less developed than the country’s commercial centre, Dar es Salaam, Dodoma remains a centre for national politics. Situated on the eastern edge of the southern highlands, the city is surrounded by a rich agricultural area and pleasant scenery. It is the centre of Tanzania’s growing wine industry.

Historically, Dodoma was a stopover on the overland caravan route that travelled from the Swahili Coast inland towards Lake Tanganyika. Early in the 20th Century, the city became a major point on the Central Line Railway, which carried agricultural crops for export to the harbour in Dar es Salaam.

KIGOMA

The bustling town of Kigoma is the regional capital of western Tanzania and a central port in the area. Located on the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, Kigoma is surrounded by rugged mountains and forests that make it a pleasing and beautiful location. In the past, Kigoma has been in competition with nearby Ujiji, but over the last few decades Kigoma has gained a strong economic foothold in the region and its port is of central importance to the

activities of the area. The town makes a good overland base for visting the Chimpanzee Safari to the Gombe Stream National Park and Mahale Mountains National Park.

MBEYA

Near the Zambian border deep in the southern highlands, the city of Mbeya is the major agricultural capital in the country’s southwest region. The Mbeya Mountain Range lies to the north, and the Poroto Mountain Range lies to the southeast. Coffee, tea, bananas and cocoa, all of which are grown in the region, are sent to Mbeya for packaging and transporting. Mbeya’s location also make it an ideal transit point with goods and people travelling by road, rail and boat between Tanzania and neighbouring Zambia and Malawi. In addition to its agricultural prosperity,

JUNE 2022 I Dar Life

27

Mbeya’ mineral wealth has attracted investment and ovides the country with a good source of income. The town was originally founded in the 1930s, when gold was discovered and a ‘gold rush’ ensued. The Mbeya gold supply turned out to be large giving for the city an opportunity to become properly established and saved it from becoming a ghosttown status as so often happened after the gold ran out. The city continues to supply the country with a regular amount of gold. Its mountain views and pleasant weather make it a good stopover point for over land travellers heading south.

MOSHI

Nestled at the base of Mt Kilimanjaro, Moshi is the coffee-producing centre of the country. Vast plantations of coffee blanket the area, surrounding the town and rising up the slopes of Kilimanjaro. Coffee is the mainstay of life in Moshi, and the seasonal coffee auctions, where international buyers bid for wholesale coffee, is an event not to be missed if you’re in town. Sugar plantations are also of central importance to the region’s economy, and can be seen outside the town. Cultural tourism programmes can arrange short hikes and day-trips to local villages, and also tours to nearby coffee farms. The main reason visitors come to Moshi is to climb Mt Kilimanjaro, the mountain whose thick clouds and snow-capped peak tower over the agricultural town. Climbing expeditions depart for

Kilimanjaro National Park early in the morning, before the clouds that cluster daily around the mountaintop have risen, and when the air is fresh and cool. Whether you’re in Moshi to scale to the top of Africa or learn more about coffee growing and production, Moshi is a quiet haven of tranquil peace, its sedate streets offer a warm welcome in a beautiful setting.

MWANZA

Situated on the southern shores of Lake Victoria, in the north west of the country, Tanzania’s second city is the perfect base from which to visit nearby Rubondo National Park, Saanane Island and the Bujora Sukuma and Nyerere museums. It also offers easy access to the Serengeti being only a 2 ó hour drive from the Western Grumeti. Other attractions include lake cruises, ECPQGKPI UCHCTKU CPF ƂUJKPI HQT VKNCRKC or giant nile perch. Mwanza s also known as Rock City because of the gigantic rock outcrops jutting out of the lake and strewn around the city. The most famous of these are the Bismarck Rocks, named after the German chancellor under whom this originally small town was established as the administration centre of German East Africa.

PANGANI

Once a centre of Swahili trade with the African mainland, the town of Pangani is now a sleepy backwater that remembers little of its splendorous past. An old German administrative

boma still stands behind a colonnade of tall shade trees and the former prison, painted a fading ochre red, looks over the river’s lazy waters. Old houses along the main road offer lived-in examples of colonial and traditional Swahili architecture, with buildings slowly crumbling against the monsoon winds. Visitors passing through the area would do well to explore what remains of the old town on foot. Even a short walk rewards visitors with a glimpse of quiet life in the old trading towns along the Swahili Coast.

TABORA The sleepy town of Tabora, in the hinterland of western Tanzania, remains a key transit point in the country. The Central Line railway branches at Tabora to both Kigoma and Mwanza, and visitors travelling by train often use Tabora as a stopover point during their journey. The regions around Tabora are famous for the honey they produce, and large jerry cans and bottles of the famous nectar can be bought in the village market. Tabora was once a major trading point and stopover for caravans that connected Lake Tanganyika and Central Africa with the coastal town of Bagamoyo to the northeast. Its historical importance is illustrated by the fact that the infamous slave and ivory trader Tippu Tip, who lived during the 19th Century, made extensive use of Tabora as a centre of his vast trading empire.

TANGA

The bustling port of Tanga is Tanzania’s second port after the urban centre of Dar es Salaam. Although the port is a centre of marine export, import, and trade, the town of Tanga still has a quiet, laid-back feel to it, as if not much has changed over the decades. Indeed, along the older sections of the town, examples of old colonial architecture and a few Arab houses still give testament to the area’s importance during the heyday of Indian Ocean trade. 6JG ƂUJ OCTMGV CPF DGCEJGU OCMG a pleasant stop during a day trip, and the city is a good place for buying supplies if you’re headed to one of the more remote areas of beaches on the northern coast.

The remains of these two great East African ports admired by early European explorers are situated on two small islands near

the coast. From the 13th to the 16th century, the merchants of Kilwa dealt in gold, silver, pearls, perfumes, Arabian crockery, Persian earthenware and Chinese porcelain; much of the trade in the Indian Ocean thus passed through their hands. Serious archaeological investigation began in the 1950s. In 1981 it was declared a World Heritage Site, and noted visitor sites are the Great Mosque, the Mkutini Palace and some remarkable ruins. However, the ruins are also on the List of World Heritage Sites in Danger. The list constitutes a call to improve their safe guarding and is designed to rally national and international efforts for their preservation.

High zinc sources include oysters, organ meats, lean beef, turkey, lamb, herring, wheat germ, legumes and nuts. . Wh e ou o To Tell Them? Write a marketing message directed specifically to your target customer. Focus on the benefits (not features) you offer. Concentrate on one thing: what’s in it for them!

Use the Six-Step Process Below to Create Your Basic Marketing Plan;

1

Wh Do You Sell? Clearly define your product, including the features and benefits. Make a list of each product or service you offer, and under each one, list the corresponding benefits to the consumer.

2

. To Whom Do You Sell? Create a detailed customer profile. If you market directly to consumers, list demographics: age, gender, lifestyle, location, preferences, interests, etc. Where do they go? What do they read? Listen to? Watch? If you market to businesses, describe your ideal business client, include the size of company, number of employees, gross sales, location, etc. What do they want? What concerns and challenges do they face, especially those your product

Define specific, realistic marketing goals. Plan how you will measure the results. Decide which marketing strategies you will use, for example: networking, cold calling, mailings, advertising, website, emails, & promotional events. Select two or three you could use to jump-start your marketing. Brainstorm the best tactics for each of the strategies you’ve selected. For example, if you chose networking as a strategy, your tactics might be to attend certain events each week, revise your 30-second commercial and produce marketing materials to hand out. Assign time and dollar resources for each strategy you’ve chosen. Follow your plan, regularly review progress, track the results and modify where necessary. When something produces good results, stick with it. If it doesn’t work, stop or adapt it. By writing one step a day or one step each week, you’ll soon have a simple written marketing plan to guide you and ensure that you get the best return on your marketing dollar as you grow your company in the right direction.

anzania is rich with artists of all caliber ranging from those tingatinga artists we’re all come acquainted to, to those more mainstream. They all represent a Tanzania from their individual views, backgrounds and beliefs. Dar Life caught up with the newly emerging artist Foibe who is taking a more active and vocal approach to showing her work.

Name: Foibe Makundi Profession: Visual Artist Born: 1974 I was born in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania in 1974. My parents are both from the Marangu, Moshi region in Kilimanjaro. In 1987, my family relocated to Geneva, Switzerland. My interest in Art started in 2nd grade. At 18, I moved to the USA to pursue further studies in the Arts. In 1997, I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Arts and in Art History from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I lived and practiced in the Washington, DC until 2009, when I returned back to Tanzania. I now live in Dar-es-Salaam and teach at Ardhi University. I am currently painting a serie on the of "Waswahili: Watu wa Pwani", part of continuous studies of East African people and Cultures. DL - What inspired you to start painting? Foibe - Wanting to get accurate depiction of people, kijiji, mlima. My older sister was good at drawings people. I asked her to help me... class mates found out, in proving them wrong, that it was I who did the work. Redrew the image...and again and again... realizing its getting better...then started drawings more and more... I think we started Sanaa period on 2rd grade, which became one of my favorite classes. In 1987, my family moved to 64

DL - Do you work from life, or from photographs or from imagination? Foibe - I use all means – My favorite is drawing and painting from a model. However, many of my recent work were photographs that I modified in photoshop until I captured the lighting and the tones. Then painted the new images. DL - What moves you most in life, either to inspire or upset you? Foibe - Day to day activities that are part of our culture. The tangible unity I experience among the extended family, friends and colleagues. Regardless of your personal issues and responsibilities, there are routines imbedded in the culture that you just know you have go thru because its the right thing to do, the thing that is expected of you. For example, birth, wedding or death... of anyone you know... or are distantly related to... the emotional and financial support that one can expect during this time. DL - Where do you feel art is going? Foibe - I think art is finally evolving in Tanzania. I have faith we are finally waking up from a deep sleep and starting to explore more medias and local subjects. DL - What is the role of the artist in society? Foibe - Reflection of the Cultures and the Society. Dar Life I JUNE 2022

History keeper. DL - What is the place of your work in society? Foibe - Telling the world an uncommon view of the people of East Africa. Subjects that are yet to be mainstream, but are yet oh so part of our lives. DL - What technique do you use? Which is more important to you, the subject of your painting, or the way it is executed? Foibe - Oil painting- textured brush strokes. I feel that both, the subject and the execution, are equally important. You may have a very important subject, but if the execution is done poorly, or inappropriately, then the message may not reach the target. DL - Do you prefer a perfect smooth technique or a more energetic expressive technique and why? A more energetic /expressive technique Foibe - I think it makes a painting, a canvas come alive. DL - Why is your work so pretty! What do you think makes it stand out? Foibe - Both the Subject and the painting technique. The technique - I usually stop when I feel a piece is done, even if the painting is not finished. I use the subject that I feel comfortable expressing an opinion on and also common subjects that many people can relate to. To purchase any of my painting and other exhibition queries please E: foibe@aol.com.

DL - Where do you do your work? Foibe - In my house. My Dining Room is my Art Studio.

he lack of to-the-point quality video content in Tanzania is clear now more than ever. Instructional videos are on the rise globally and are gaining mainstream relevance at staggering rates. However, non-English speaking Tanzanians, which are the majority of the populous, fail to benefit from this development because of the language barrier. Diko is geared to face this challenge and is prepared to contribute to the distribution of content via cuisine. The primary target audience is predominantly, mothers, students, working ladies, food service

The ultimate goal is to promote the simplicity of making wholesome and otherwise seen as intricate meals at home. The mediums used to share this information are largely based on digital platforms such as social media and video sharing sites (e.g. YouTube).

Motivated by a swift start, the brand's growth strategy remains driven by the intent to gradually expand by providing more culinary related services and products outside of video and media. Friends and family took notice of this and started to request that Monalisa caters at gatherings, she took on the challenge and received numerous positive reviews and requests for recipes. This led her to investigating the current market for food

instructional content in Swahili and found that there is room for improvement. Monalisa then put together a plan and alongside the digital agency, Blink View, devised a plan to bring Diko by Monalisa to life. The rest is history. Kilimanjaro National Park 72

Climbing Kilimanjaro scores high on countless ultimate to-do lists. Reaching the summit feels like being on top of Africa, with the whole continent lying at your feet. And best of all: most people reach the crater rim with no more than the right clothing, a humble attitude and a good measure of willpower.

Dar Life I JUNE 2022

Africa’s snow-capped giant bursts out of the savannah to an almost haughty 5,895 metres. Mount Kilimanjaro is a stratovolcano and therefore boasts three peaks: Kibo (5,895 metres), Mawenzi (5,149 metres) and the Shira plateau (3,962 metres). Today, the volcano is still partly active. Don’t expect any display from Shira and Mawenzi – both collapsed over a million years ago – but sleeping beauty Kibo is still capable of some action. During the past century its cone has been seen smoking and expelling ominous rumbling noises from deep down its core.

Reaching the summit feels like being on top of Africa. When the German missionary Johannes Rebmann wrote about a snow-capped peak on the Equator in 1848, people didn’t take him seriously. But his words did trigger some daredevils to conquer the remarkable colossus. The first attempt in 1861 failed and it wasn’t before 1889 that the German geographer Hans Meyer became the first foreigner to reach Kibo Peak. The summit was baptised Kaiser Wilhelm Spitze (Kaiser Wilhelm Peak), after the Prussian ruler Wilhelm I. After independence in 1961 it was given a more local name: Uhuru (Freedom) Peak. All adults of normal health and fitness should be able to make it to the top. There is no need to bring serious climbing equipment, but waterproof, windproof and warm gear (don’t forget mittens and a hat) is highly advisable. The conditions may change rapidly so bring a set of clothes for each day.

The six-day Marangu trail: the oldest way up Mount Kilimanjaro Day 1: an 8 km trek from Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut that will take about 4-5 hours (ascent 760 m) Day 2: an 11 km trek to Horombo Hut that will take about 5-6 hours (ascent 1,053 metres) Day 3: Rest day Day 4: an 11 km trek to Kibo Hut that takes about 4,5-6 hours (ascent 970 metres) Day 5: a 21 km trek from Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, back to Kibo Hut and Horombo Hut that will take about 14-17,5 hours (ascent 1,142 metres, decent 2,112 metres) Day 6: a 19 km trek to Marangu Gate that takes about 5-6 hours (decent 1,810 metres)

Alternatives There are several other routes that take you to the summit of Kibo: Machame, Rongai, Umbwe and Londorosi/Lemosho. The Mweka route is used as a descent corridor for the Machame, Umbwe and Londorosi/Lemosho routes. Note: although climbing Mount Kili is feasible for the many of us, no one said it is going to be easy. Keep in mind that it will be a challenging hiking experience at all times and the oxygen content of the air on top is 40% of that of sea level.

All adults of normal health and fitness should be able to make it to the top. It is not only about reaching the top however. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a journey from the tropics to the Arctic and back. The higher you climb, the colder it gets; Mount Kili encompasses several major climatic zones. You start from the surrounding hot, tropical region (800-1,900 metres). You then walk through the dense and lush montane forest (1,900-2,900 metres) inhabited with primates, antelopes and even elephants. After the forest you reach the bushy and grassy heath and moorland (2,900-4,000 metres) with huge heather and giant, alien-looking lobelias. The final vertical kilometre takes you through sparse, barren alpine desert (4,000-5,000 metres) to the chilly summit (up to 5,895 metres), consisting of lava desert and glacier patches. Mission accomplished: a vertical tour around the world in unrivalled beauty.

• Kilimanjaro National Park is a World Heritage Site and established in 1973 (yet officially opened in 1977). • From west to east it stretches 45 km. • Height: from 2,700 metres (Mandara) to 5,895 metres (Kibo). • The park is easily accessible, arrival by tarmac road (steep slopes in the last section). • It’s a 123 km drive from the town of Arusha, which will take about 2 hours: 1 hour to the town of Moshi (first 80 km). From there it takes another hour to Marangu Gate (1,970 metres), through the village of Himo. • Although there are lots of hikers on popular Marangu route all year round, it is relatively quiet on the less frequently used routes.

Accommodation On the mountain: several huts on the Marangu route and campsites on the other routes. Outside the park: several hotels and campsites in Moshi town and the village of Marangu. Note: advance booking through tour operators is required.

Kilimanjaro Mount

The roof of Africa

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and one of the world’s most iconic peaks. Rising abruptly from the open plains, covered with snow and frequently fringed by clouds, it is one of Africa’s classic images and one that stunned the geographers and explorers of the 19th century: lying so close to the equator, how could the mountain contain snow?” What reasons inspire people to scale Kilimanjaro today? Wasn’t the mountain conquered many years ago? Our writer Gervase Tatah explores the motives that draw people to Kilimanjaro, right from the days of Hans Meyer. It is now one hundred and twentyfive years since the first successful expedition to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. The mountain was conquered in October 1889 after almost 40 years of attempts by western climbers to explore the mountain in difficult expeditions which included men like: Johannes Rebmann (1848), Baron von der Decken (1861 and 1862), Charles New (1871), Harry Johnston (1883) and Hans Meyer (1887-1889). The presence of a snowcapped mountain in Africa, became known to Europeans in 1848 when the German missionary Johannes Rebmann explored this part of East 74

when the routes to the peak were not known, when the alpine forests round it was much thicker, and when its snow was much, much more prevalent on the slopes than it is today. Hans Meyer’s conquest indeed was difficult and historical.

Africa. However, reports from the explorer that there was a snow-capped mountain in Africa, so close to the Equator, was not believed until Hans Meyer and the Austrian mountaineer Ludwig Purtscheller climbed the mountain to the summit, ending a four- decade struggle among European explorers to reach the summit first and prove its snows. Hans Meyer was a geology professor from Leipzig in Germany. He made four attempts to Kilimanjaro beginning in 1887

Interestingly today, since Hans Meyer’s climb in 1889, the mountain still attracts climbers across the globe as if it is another beginning of discovery. Until today the attempt to climb Kilimanjaro is still the greatest challenge for adventurers wishing to reach the highest point on the African continent. But what really attracts people from every corner of the world, and from every age-set, to climb Kilimanjaro? By and large, there are five good reasons that inspire people to climb Kilimanjaro:

1

>65+,9 6- ;/, >693+! 20304(51(96 0: 65, 6- ;/, :,=,5 5(;<9(3 >65+,9: 6- (-90*( 0; 0: ;/, ;(33,:; 46<5;(05 05 (-90*( (5+ ;/, ;(33,:; -9,, :;(5+05. 46<5;(05 05 ;/, >693+ 0; 0: *36:, ;6 ;/, ,8<(;69 )<; 0; -,(;<9,: ( :56> ;677,+ 7,(2 @,(9 96<5+

. Kilimanjaro is a natural wonder: it is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. It is a free-standing mountain because it is not a part of a mountain range; it just rises abruptly from the open plains to kiss the clouds with a snowcapped peak at an elevation of 5, 895m (19,340 feet).

2

.

Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano but not an extinct one. The most recent activity was about 200 years ago; the last major eruption was 360,000 years ago. Ominous rumbles can sometimes be heard – and gases emerge from fume holes in the crater.

3

. Almost every kind of ecological system in the world is found on the mountain, right from tropical crops on the cultivated slopes, to the lush alpine forest inhabited by wild animals. Above the forest lies the moorland zone where a cover of heather, giant lobelia and huge, cactus-like plants grow. Then there is an almost-lunar landscape, the saddle, which stretches between the two peaks of Kibo and Mawezi. The saddle is just a desert vainly dotted with moss and lichen. Then, finally, the last vegetation gives way to

a winter wonderland of ice and snow – the magnificent beauty of the roof of the continent.

4

. Kilimanjaro is one of the world’s most accessible high summits: With the help of porters and a guide it is possible to walk all the way to the summit of Kibo without specialized mountaineering equipment, or experience, and Kilimanjaro can be conquered by any reasonably fit person. Most climbers reach the crater rim with little more than a walking stick, proper clothing and determination. The whole climb normally takes five or six days and involves four or five overnight stays in mountain huts or tents.

5

.

The highest point on the mountain, and indeed the whole of Africa, is Uhuru

Peak on Kibo. The peak provides views of spectacular glaciers and a yawning wide crater. Also on Kibo is the slightly lower peak of Gillman’s Point. These are the goals for most climbers. And those who reach Uhuru, the actual summit, or Gillman’s Point on the lip of the crater, earn certificates at the end of their expedition for their brave endeavours to walk to the Roof of Africa.
