NGORONGORO LODGE, MEMBER OF MELIÁ COLLECTION
Meliá Hotels International has announced the addition of Ngorongoro Lodge, a Meliá Collection Hotel in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater, a rare conservation area where tourism must ensure the utmost respect for the natural environment and local communities. Launching in mid 2023, this forthcoming hotel will become the brand’s ninth in the portfolio and a significant step forward for the group’s sustainability campaign. Ngorongoro Lodge has been a feature of the nature reserve for some time but will reopen after a major renovation which has adapted to the needs of discerning, eco-conscious travellers, yet without damaging its authenticity and integration with its surrounding environment. The hotel will feature 28 rooms and 24 spacious suites with views of the crater, accompanied by two restaurants, a barbecue area, a pool and a spa. This fourth hotel in Tanzania allows Meliá to extend its portfolio of hotels in African nature reserves, along with the Gran Meliá Arusha, the Meliá Zanzibar and the Meliá Serengeti Lodge.

National Park Arusha
unspoiled paradise with a Scenic Gem
Arusha National Park is the closest national park to Arusha town, located 5 km from town and 35 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport. The park is one of the smallest but most diverse national parks in Tanzania. It has a wide range of vegetation – the slopes of Ngurdoto Crater are covered with rainforest, swamps and lush savannah at moorland on the slopes of Meru Mountain.
NATURE & WILDLIFE SAFARI EXPERIENCE
The atmosphere in Arusha National Park is magical. The entrance gate leads into shadowy montane
forest inhabited by inquisitive blue monkeys and colourful turacos and trogons – the only place on the northern safari circuit where the acrobatic black-and-white colobus monkey is easily seen. In the middle of the forest stands the spectacular Ngurdoto Crater, whose steep, rocky cliffs dotted with herds of buffalo and warthog.
Further north, rolling grassy hills enclose the tranquil beauty of the Momela Lakes, each one a different hue of green or blue. Their shallows sometimes tinged pink with thousands of scrubby bushes like overgrown hares on spindly legs. More than 400 species of bird,
both migrant and resident, can be found in Arusha National Park. The rewarding climb up Mount Meru passes through forests of dripping Spanish moss, carpeted with clover and rises to open heath, spiked with giant lobelia plants. Delicate klipspringer antelope watch the progress of hikers from the top of huge boulders, and alpine desert underfoot. Once astride the craggy summit, the reward is a sight of Mount Kilimanjaro, breath-taking in the sunrise. Although elephants are uncommon in Arusha National Park and lions absent altogether, leopards and spotted hyenas may be seen slinking around in the early morning and lurking next to waterfalls in the shadowy forest

in the late evenings. It is also at dusk and dawn that the veil of cloud on the eastern horizon is most likely to clear, revealing the majestic snow-capped peaks of Kilimanjaro, only 50 km (30 mi)away. But it is Kilimanjaro’s unassuming cousin, Mount Meru, the 4,566 metres (14,990 feet) that dominates the park’s horizon. Its peaks and eastern foot slopes protected within the national park, Meru offers unparalleled views of its famous neighbour, while also forming a rewarding hiking destination in its own right.

Spotlight Travelexpo Arusha 2023
Promoting Tanzania Domestic and International Tourism
“I was very happy with the attendance by the travel trade in Arusha, we had 191 agents and tour operators visiting Spotlight from Dar, Arusha, Moshi and even few from Nairobi. The trade really enjoyed the live face to face networking interaction and the exhibitors found the expo very productive indeed”
-Commented by Spotlight organiser Derek Houston
Spotlight TravelExpo
Arusha was a live faceto-face success Expo targeting Arusha- & Moshibased Travel Agents & Tour Operators selling interregional travel. The Expo was held on 02 February 20223 at Gran Melia. It was a half-day event with large number of trade from Arusha and Moshi and few from Kenya and Uganda who attended.
More than 35 exhibitors from mainland Tanzania, Zanzibar and other East African countries participated in the show. The Spotlight TravelExpo Arusha is held at the beginning of each year to give a platform for Hotels, Resorts and Lodges from East African Countries to meet with Arusha & Moshi based regional Tour operators and Travel agents to contract 2023 rates and update them on new developments.
The “Spotlight TravelExpo” was the perfect event to
connect yourself with other Key-Players of the most affected travel industry. The “Spotlight TravelExpo” is going to be an annual tourism event to connect Tanzania Tourism Stakeholders and Tourism Government Authorities.
Spotlight Travel Expo is organised by Houston Travel Marketing Services in co-operation with Kilifair Promotion Co. Ltd the organisers of KaribuKilifair. We also were very grateful for the great support from TASOTA.
“Her Excellency, the President Samia Suluhu Hassan has made great strides in promoting tourist attractions in the country through the ‘Royal Tour’ film, as a leading and patriotic lender in the country, we have seen it is good to support these efforts through this competition which traces its roots in the isles,” she noted.
Unfolding a further goal for hosting it for the second year in a row through the Kizimkazi Festival, she said the CRDB Bank is also determined to leverage such a race to empower young people economically by commercializing it just like other sports.
“In carrying out this mission, this year we have handed over new equipment worth Sh50 million including modern boats rescue
buoys to all 20 participants. This has added a lot of motivation to the participants as this year’s race seemed to be very competitive.”
The CRDB Bank spent more than Sh65 million to sponsor other games in the Kizimkazi Festival including; football, netball, nage, bicycle racing, bao, coconut husking, tug of war, and painting. The bank also built a complete modern science laboratory with its equipment in the Kizimkazi School worth Sh50 million. The laboratory aims at motivating students to study science subjects.
The 20 participants competed in races of two miles for two rounds, whereby Khatib Haji Hamis, a resident of Kizimkazi Mkunguni,
emerged the winner, taking home prize money of Sh2.5 million and a fishing boat for his group from the village he comes from.
Juma Ramadhani Haji from the village of Kizimkazi Mkunguni was the runner-up, who walked away with prize money of Sh1 million, and third was Muhammad Ambar Mpate from the same village, who walked away with Sh700,000 and fourth was Daudi Wajihi Zahor, a resident of Kizimkazi Dimbani, who was awarded Sh500,000.
The coveted festival marked its end on Saturday, August 3, 2022, where the official guest was the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Solution Hassan, where among other things, development projects were handed over.

Making Money While You’re in Career Transition
If you’re out of work now, gap until you land the job you want? If you’re fully-employed but concerned about losing your job, what sort of opportunities could you pursue to earn additional income, should the need arise?
Here are some interim options, earn money while continuing to search for the job you really want:
PART-TIME OR TEMPORARY JOB
you genuinely like. If you enjoy shopping or love the products of a particular store, consider working in retail. If you have a passion for cooking or are knowledgeable about food, you might want to be a prep chef at a favorite restaurant. If you have connections at business service organizations and can add value to their operations, try working at a company where your managerial contributions would be valued. Contact several temp agencies, or go
visit businesses in which you have an interest.
WORK FOR FAMILY OR FRIENDS
Do you have relatives or friends who own or run businesses? Would you be comfortable working with them? In tough times, it is important to put your pride aside and ask for help. But in this case, the help would be mutual. Your friend or relative would be the lucky recipient of your services, and you would be gainfully employed, working for someone you already know and like. Contact every friend, relative, or acquaintance who owns or runs a business, and ask about their needs and challenges.
HOME-BASED WORK
With the advent of the Internet and computer technology, it is easier than ever to do real work from home. Some of this work can be enjoyable and lucrative. There is no longer a stigma about working from home, and
suits you. From copywriting to doing proposals to preparing tax returns, there’s no limit to the options. Ask yourself what skills you have, and offer your services to appropriate companies and families in your area. Contact everyone in your network to offer your services, and ask for referrals after your work has been satisfactorily completed.
ODD JOBS
Are you handy around the house? Do you own special equipment or tools? Do you have trade skills that you could offer to other people in your town? There is always a need for reliable, professional help in these disciplines. If you’re not afraid to get your hands dirty, you can earn good money providing these much-needed services to organizations and individuals.
THE “BRIDGE JOB STRATEGY” IS A PRAGMATIC APPROACH TO CARRY YOU THROUGH A DIFFICULT EMPLOYMENT OR FINANCIAL PERIOD.

Makundi
By George RodgersTanzania is rich with artists of all caliber ranging from those tingatinga artists we’re all come acquainted to, to those more mainstream. They all represent a Tanzania from their individual views, backgrounds and beliefs. Dar Life caught up with the newly emerging artist Foibe who is taking a more active and vocal approach to showing her work.
Name: Foibe Makundi
Profession: Visual Artist
Born: 1974
I was born in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania in 1974. My parents are both from the Marangu, Moshi region in Kilimanjaro. In 1987, my family relocated to Geneva, Switzerland. My interest in Art started in 2nd grade. At 18, I moved to the USA to pursue further studies in the Arts. In 1997, I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Arts and in Art History from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I lived and practiced in the Washington, DC until 2009, when I returned back to Tanzania. I now live in Dar-es-Salaam and teach at Ardhi University. I am currently painting a serie on the of "Waswahili: Watu wa Pwani", part of continuous studies of East African people and Cultures.
DL - What inspired you to start painting?
Foibe - Wanting to get accurate depiction of people, kijiji, mlima. My older sister was good at drawings people. I asked her to help me... class mates found out, in proving them wrong, that it was I who did the work. Redrew the image...and again and again... realizing its getting better...then started drawings more and more... I think we started Sanaa period on 2rd grade, which became one of my favorite classes. In 1987, my family moved to
Geneva, Switzerland, where I began to receive a formal training in Fine Arts, along with the other Science and Math and Language courses.
DLFoibe - 29 years.
DLFoibe - 2nd grade in Chang'ombe primary school (8yrs old in 1982). Life Drawings (Figurative/Portraiture, Still Life and Landscape).
Foibe - First Exhibit - Group Exhibit- Student's Work while in High School, International School of Geneva, Switzerland ... probably 1991 or 1992, First Solo Exhibit - Christensen Center Art Gallery, Augsburg College, Minneapolis, MN, USA – 1997.
DL- W Where d do y ou d o y your w wo rk?
Foibe- In my house. My Dining Room is my Art Studio.
DL- D Do y yo u w work f fro m l life, o or f from p photographs or f from i imagination?
Foibe- I use all means – My favorite is drawing and painting from a model. However, many of my recent work were photographs that I modified in photoshop until I captured the lighting and the tones. Then painted the new images.
DL- W What m mo ve s y yo u m most i in l life, e eithe r t to i inspire or u up set y you?
Foibe- Day to day activities that are part of our culture. The tangible unity I experience among the extended family, friends and colleagues. Regardless of your personal issues and responsibilities, there are routines imbedded in the culture that you just know you have go thru because its the right thing to do, the thing that is expected of you. For example, birth, wedding or death... of anyone you know... or are distantly related to... the emotional and financial support that one can expect during this time.
DL- W Where d do y ou f fee l a art i is g going?
Foibe- I think art is finally evolving in Tanzania. I have faith we are finally waking up from a deep sleep and starting to explore more medias and local subjects.
DL- W What i is t the r role o f t the a artist i in s so ciety?
Foibe- Reflection of the Cultures and the Society.
D DL L- W Whhaat t i is s t thhe e p pllaacce e o of f y yoouur r w woorrk k i in n s soocciieettyy? ?

S KIN DEEP
The Benefits of Body Scrubs
Is it really true that beauty is only skin deep?
Actually, your skin says much more about your health and wellbeing than you think. Clean, radiantlooking skin is a sign of healthiness and a toxin-free body while shallow, dull skin might indicate harmful toxins polluting the body’s systems.
In a perfect world we would breathe fresh, unpolluted air, the weather, temperature and humidity would be constant, and our lives would be stress free. The fact is that we live in an environment that is less than perfect...far less! On a daily basis our skin is exposed to pollution, contaminated water and air conditioning that robs our skin of its youthfulness and radiance. Body scrubs have various benefits that are not just
good for your skin but also beneficial for your overall health and well-being. Here are four very good reasons for you to hop over at the spa or grab that pot of sea salt!
Skin Glow
This is probably the biggest reason for you to have a body scrub once every two weeks. Sea salt in particular has many minerals and nutrients that help to re-mineralize your skin, feeding it from the outside.
Exfoliating
This is the most obvious reason, but every minute your skin sheds between 30,000 and 40,000 dead skin cells. They get replaced by new ones but the old ones need to go somewhere. Exfoliation helps to remove the dead skin cells and prevents your skin from looking dull and faded. With exfoliation, the skin’s pores are opened and cleaned out, helping to promote toxins and excess minerals being expelled from the body. Ensure that the scrub you use is smooth to the touch.
Increase Circulation
Body scrubs helps to promote blood flow to your skin and at the same time remove excess fluid through the lymphatic system. A professional therapist will be able to use techniques to push toxic fluids towards the lymph nodes and to increase circulation to the surface layers of the skin.
Improve Cellulite and Ageing
Yes! Regular body scrubs can reduce the dimples caused by cellulite and give your skin a smoother appearance. Regular body scrubs help to promote the formation of collagen in the skin which will leave your skin looking younger and visibly firmer. Try scrubs with coffee or green tea as the key ingredients. They are packed with antioxidants to prevent aging.
To ensure your skin stays of toxins aradiant and frees good to have and pollutants, it ixfoliation every professional e so often and at home at least once or twice a week. If you have more sensitive skin it able to scrub wouvis it ld be adup only once a week.
The better you protect yourself, the healthier and better looking you will be.

In a small saucepan, mix together the honey, chilli sauce, garlic, ginger, lemon grass, 1 tablespoon of the lime zest and 2 tablespoons of the lime juice with the soy sauce, cumin, coriander and cinnamon. Heat gently until just starting to bubble, then remove from the heat and leave to cool.
Prepare the chicken wings by folding the tips back under the thickest part of the meat to form a triangle. Arrange in a shallow, ovenproof dish. Pour over the honey mixture, turning the wings to ensure that they are all well coated. Cover with Clingfilm and leave to marinate in the refrigerator for 4 hours or overnight, turning once or twice.
Mix together the mayonnaise with the remaining lime zest and juice and the coriander. Leave to let the flavours develop while the wings are cooking. Arrange the wings on a rack set over a tinfoil-lined roasting tin. Roast at the top of the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until the wings are tender and golden, basting once or twice with the remaining marinade and turning once. Remove from the oven. Garnish the wings with lemon or lime wedges and serve immediately with the mayonnaise.
Bread Pudding Recipe
Total Time: 1 hour
Prep: 10 min
Cook: 1 hour
Yield: 8 to 10 servings
Level: Easy
Ingredients
1 loaf French bread, at least a day old, cut into 1-inch squares (about 6-7 cups)
1 qt milk
3 eggs
Method
Preheat oven to 350°F. Place milk in a large mixing bowl and add the bread that has been cut into squares. Press the bread into the milk with your hands until all of the milk is absorbed.
In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, then whisk in the sugar, vanilla, allspice and cinnamon. Pour over the bread and milk mixture. Add the raisins and gently stir to combine.
Pour the melted butter into the
2 cups sugar
2 Tbsp vanilla extract
1 cup raisins
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
3 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted
Sauce:
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
1 cup sugar
1 egg
Few drops vanilla essence
bottom of a 9x13 inch baking pan. Coat the bottom and the sides of the pan well with the butter. Pour the bread milk and egg mixture into the baking pan. Bake at 350°F for 35-45 minutes, until the liquid has set. The pudding is done when the edges start getting a bit brown and pull away from the edge of the pan.
While the bread pudding is cooking, make the sauce. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan on low heat. Add the sugar and egg and whisk to blend well.
Slowly cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, then remove from heat. Do not allow the mixture to simmer! (Or the sauce will curdle. By the way, if your sauce curdles, just take it off the heat and blend it smooth in a blender.) Whisk again before serving. The sauce should creamy, and smooth.
Serve the bread pudding with sauce on the side; pour on to taste. Best fresh and eaten the day it is made.

CULTURAL TOURISM
In Tanzania, a land of superb landscapes and spectacular wildlife, another attraction stands equally tall- the people. Tanzania’s people are among the most welcoming and approachable on earth, with a range of fascinating cultures ready to be shared with visitors. From the wachagga of the slopes of Kilimanjaro to the now world-famous Maasai, a cultural excursion or a longer stay among local people is likely to become one of the most rewarding experiences of any holiday I Tanzania.
In addition, many local areas run their own cultural programmes for visitors, bringing income directly to the community and giving the people the chance to show their lifestyle to the outside world on their own terms. Primary schools can be developed through a tour of the fascinating slopes of Mt Meru; a health clinic is improved through a guided tour of the luscious green Usambara Mountains, or a kindergarten funded by a stroll through the tropical vegetation of the Rift Valley.
Cultural tourism programmes are benefi cial to everyone – the tourists get a unique, unforgettable experience, the local people generate income and improve their standard of living, and both parties gain valuable understanding of another culture which will last long after the visitors have returned home. Most cultural tourism programmes are located near the main through fares of the principal tourist destinations, making a cultural addition to a safari easy to arrange. Guides are local people born and raised in the area, well trained in their jobs and proficient in English.
Cultural tours can be half-day events or incorporated into a longer safari. Whether you spend the morning in a Maasai boma or trek by camel up a local summit, stopping to learn about traditional plants and tribal stories, a cultural tour is must-do for anyone wanting to see the rich life of the Tanzania people. Some of Tanzania’s bestknown cultural tourism destinations include:
“Cultural tourism programmes are benefi cial to everyone – the tourists get a unique, unforgettable experience, the local people generate income and improve their standard of living…”
Eyasi
Home to some of the last hunter-gatherers in Africa, the Hadzabe bushmen have made the area around Lake Eyasi their long-time hunting grounds. Day-trips or longer safaris with the hadzabe bushmen give visitors a chance to experience a way of life that has long since vanished elsewhere on the planet. Morning hunts with the Hadzabe warriors, armed with bows and arrows, offer a fascinating glimpse into an ancient way of life. Honey-gathering, walks to find traditional healing plants and food, and traditional dances are all part of the Hadzabe cultural tourism experience.
Kilimanjaro
Why not combine a hike up the world’s most impressive mountain with a visit to its people, the historically progressive WaChagga? See traditional and modern Chagga art, culture and homes.
Maasailand
See how the Maasai, among the last of the world’s pastoral peoples, are adapting to the 21st century in their own way and in their won time. Visit Engaruka, the lost city in the shadow of the Great Rift Wall, where Maasai mix irrigation, farming and traditional herding. In Mkuru, near Arusha National Park, short camel treks with local Maasai give visitors a glimpse into nomadic culture, as they climb nearby Ol Donyo Landaree.
Meru
Only minutes from bustling Arusha are spots that look and feel as they did decades ago. But everywhere, too, is transition as the WaArusha and WaMeru peoples adapt tradition to progress and science. Visitors can meet a traditional healer, learn about animal husbandry and agri-culture, and buy carvings and foodstuffs from local handicraft cooperatives or women’s business.
Southern Pare Mountains
Walk the most remote mountains of northern Tanzania with local farmers, through traditional Pare villages and dense tropical forests. From half day to three day guided hikes, this is an opportunity to step into the culture of the Pare people. Visit the Mghimbi Caves, secret hiding place during the slave raids, the proceed to Malameni Rock, the scene of human sacrifices to appease evil spirits up until the 1930s. Walk through the Ikongwe Village, believe by locals to be a gift from heaven, surrounded by mountain terraces and small waterfalls. Profits from these tours are used to subsidise much needed energy saving stoves and educational scholarship.
Usambara
Africa’s Switzerland, a hiker’s paradise, with dozens of varied treks from half a day to a week. The stunning mountainous district of Lushoto was home to one of Tanzania’s great historical kingdoms.

ACTIVITIES AT OLMESERA
Tanzanite Tour
A lot of travelers tell us that they
the animals – and return for the people. That’s a testament to the warm, genuine hospitality on offer in Tanzania – equally fascinating, cultures that can be experienced in Tanzania. This is a country of storytellers, where myths and legends are passed down from generation to generation. African Galleria is
a place where you can meet the people behind the pieces, from the ebony wood carvers, jewelry designers, painters, craftsmen and chefs.
You know you are buying quality jewellery when you purchase a Tanzanite right in the heart of Tanzania. But have you ever wondered exactly how these precious stones are mined? At the African Galleria we have built a makeshift-mine on our property so that you can experience the life-cycle of each Tanzanite. There is also a ‘peek-window’ where you can watch our jewellers hard at work crafting your next one of a kind jewellery piece. Put some sparkle into your life by going on African Galleria’s Tanzanite Tour.
Ebony Tour
Tanzania is one of the only countries in the world that ethically produce ebony products. If you want to know
more and see for yourself, we recommend you go on the Ebony Tour. There you will get to see the jaw dropping transformations that these artists create. See them in action, turning a seemingly average looking tree stump, into amazing artworks that will take your breath away. Go on, have a look - seeing is believing!
Painting Tour
When people hear the word African, there are a few things
that instantly springs to mind. Going on an African Safari; experiencing the unique African culture and (probably most notably) seeing the wonderful talent and passion expressed in their works of art. At African Galleria, we appreciate art and we are proud to work alongside some of the best artists Tanzania has to offer. We have created a proverbial portal between client and creator, by giving the buyer a chance to shake hands with the artists themselves.
