“The science of today is the technology of tomorrow’- this phrase was well translated by the young secondary school students of the country who took part in the science exhibition. The twoday event, organized by Young Scientists Tanzania (YST) witnessed 80 secondary schools taking part from 26 regions of Tanzania who showcased their talents in science disciplines. The students displayed some brilliant science projects they had been working on for over a year.”

Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education Science and Technology, Prof. Simon Msanjila, presents overall prize to YST 2017 overall winners, Prosper Gasper and Eric Simon from St. Jude Secondary school.

A project by Prosper Gasper and Diana Erick Simon from St. Jude Secondary School won the overall prize of the competition, as it developed an extremely useful idea to address the issue of fire accidents in our society. “Our project aims to make everyone safe, especially those living in towns. The project focuses on using mobile phone technology to send an automatic alert to a house owner and fire department once fire breaks at a house,” explained the two young innovative scientists from Arusha, Prosper and Erick. “We are happy that we have emerged the overall winners of YST 2017 exhibition. We are very happy for the prize as we will be visiting South Africa this year in October and on top of that we won university scholarships from Karimjee Jivanjee Foundation,” Erick explained.” 16 I Dar Life I October 2017

Rotary Zanzibar & Fumba Town Golf Day Raising Funds to Support Health & Education LJ ^ũĂŶŝ DƺŐŐĞŶďƵƌŐ

Without the generous support of our sponsors, we would not have been able to raise $16,500. The $16,500 raised has been used to source life-saving and life enhancing equipment for Zanzibar’s third largest hospital in Makunduchi. Additionally the club is in the process of securing a further $70,000.00 in international Rotary Foundation grants to purchase more equipment and effect repairs and refurbishments to the hospital.

“On behalf of the Government, I take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude for your kind reception during the Golf Day. I also acknowledge the efforts made by Rotary and other sponsors for a well organized event.” - Dr. Juma Akil Principal Secretary Ministry of Health, Zanzibar. On 4th of November 2017, Rotary Zanzibar and Fumba Town Development Golf Day is set to be even bigger and even better! The organisers are thrilled Fumba Town Development has once again agreed to be the signature sponsor. Their generosity allowed the Rotary Club to get the event off the JURXQG DQG À\LQJ )XPED 7RZQ Development is committed to providing ethically built, affordable urban housing in Zanzibar while creating a sustainable infrastructure and attractive environment. 7KH EHQH¿FLDU\ RI WKLV \HDUV¶ event is Zanzibar Learning 4 Life Foundation, an excellent educational NGO that has assisted thousands of students

through extra curriculum support and tutoring. Given the variety of lessons and their soaring attendance soaring, their current premises are too small and inadequate, with some classes having to be held outdoors. They are in desperate need of expansion, teaching equipment and support. The NGO does its utmost to fundraise and sustain its activities through a number of small student run businesses they have built – including chicken farming and bicycle repairs, teaching them invaluable life and business skills.

“The Rotary Club of Zanzibar is raising funds to help towards a new school which will have more space and facilities to accommodate more students and to support the teachers, students and future of ZL4LF.” The sponsors have again been generous this year in their donations. Our 2017 Albatross Sponsors are: Oryx Energies , Aetna / Mic Global Risk , Ozti East Africa , Qatar Airways, Zanlink , United Opetroleum and Sea Cliff Resort & Spa. T

he event drew players from across East Africa, Zambia and South Africa attracted by the stunning golf course at Sea Cliff Resort and Spa, Zanzibar, the excellent prizes on offer and a glittering awards dinner. And the players were not disappointed – all were impressed by the course design, the excellent green keeping and the beautiful setting through palm groves and water features. They appreciated the excellent organisation and the delicious refreshments available throughout the course. Each player received a gift bag to the value of $150.00 (and $200.00 this year) courtesy of the event’s generous sponsors. An excellent day of golf, followed by a delicious dinner during which many prizes were awarded. All while helping the Rotary Club of Zanzibar achieve their charitable goals. The consensus? An entry fee very well spent.

The Goats Race 2017 Dar’s Premier Charity Event By Goat Race Correspondent

T

he Goat Races 2017 proved to be yet another really successful day of raising funds for charity as well as being a fun day out for family and friends alike. “The Goat Races is a sum of many parts – the Kids’ Area, the UDIĂ€H WKH EHWWLQJ DQG WKH IRRG and beverage outlets all come together to add to the enjoyment of the day. However, the real stars of the show are, of course, the goats themselves. Although, they may take a little gentle persuasion to get started they always produce an exciting and FORVH ÂżQLVK ,Q EHWZHHQ UDFHV they are much loved and petted by the children who visit them in the goat pen.â€? The Goat Races has become an institution in Dar es Salaam, and rightly so, but this is only possible because of the amazing and continuing support it has received from all areas of the community. This includes the corporate community in the way of sponsorship, especially our Race sponsors - Coca-Cola, Southern Sun, TBL, Toyota and Stanbic. One aspect of the Races which is truly unique to the Races is the dressing up competitions – both adults and children – and again a huge thank you to those who donated prizes. The hours

of planning and organizing that goes into this is quite astounding and adds so much to the colour and spectacle of the day. “The Goat Races committee is always truly touched and appreciative of the effort that has been made, and this year was no exception. Improving Breast Cancer Awareness in Tanzania Intelligence & Care by Sali International Hospital

By Ruth Kaale, MRT/Ultra Sonographer at Sali International Hospital “Mammography is specialized medical imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system to see inside breasts. A mammography examination can detect early breast disease in women who are experiencing symptoms such as lump, pain, nipple discharge or color changes on the breast. Mammograms are used as a screening tool to detect early breast cancer in women experiencing no symptoms.”

M

ammography plays a central part in early detection of breast cancers because it can show changes in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician can feel them. It is recommended that women aged 40 and above should get their breast screened annually. Research has shown that annual mammograms lead to early detection of breast cancers, when they are most curable and breast-conservation therapies are available. &XUUHQWO\ WKHUH LV QR VXI¿FLHQW knowledge on the causes of breast cancer, therefore, early detection of the disease remains 46 I Dar Life I October 2017

The Haven of Peace Tanzania’s bustling capital By Sara Simon

Dar es salaam means ‘haven of peace’. The name was bestowed on the city during the time of Sultan Seyyid Majid, who chose ϔ Zaramo to have his summer palace, Bandur ul Salaam, the palace of peace. The village thrived and grew under the Sultan’s presence, becoming a centre of trade for ivory and slaves and transforming over time into the bustling city of Dar es salaam.”
