TRIBUTE TO

Nicola Colangelo 1943 – 2017

“Nicola colangelo was an extraordinary man who learned a lot from Africa and, at the same time had the opportunity to teach something to Africa. Always moving forward one foot after the other – “sukuma twende” - that was the philosophy that drove Nicola to build his businesses from the ground up. Nicola was born on 26th October, 1943 in the city of La Spezia, Italy. He grew up in a peasant household in Liguria, where subsistence and scarcity shaped his early life. This is also where Nicola, as known to all who knew him, acquired a perseverant approach that would help make him one of Tanzania’s leading business RGQRNG q|

Many didn’t feel very comfortable with the weather forecast. It was looking calm in the bay, but we knew that 1.5m swells and high winds were predicted for the day. With nervous anticipation we tried to read the seas beyond the Dar es Salaam peninsula. The open ocean out there is where the battle with the wind, waves, fatigue, and our own minds would be won or lost. The distance to a Zanzibar sandbank, which is only exposed at low tide, is around 40km. Just before 4am in the morning we pushed off, slowly making our way to Maxan, the lead catamaran that would show us the way. There were several other boats already bobbing on the water at this early hour,

Glenn on the SUP was diving into the ocean most of all. The sea was so rough he would start in a seating position on his board, but paddling like this on a SUP is awkward. After a while he would kneel, kneepads protecting him from the worst of the impact of each wave. Then, as the knees would give in, he would stand up, bravely putting his paddle into the raging ocean until a rogue whitecap would yet again knock him off and send him diving into the angry waves.

Turkish Food

Turkish food is a true fusion of many different cultures, a collage of different cuisines so to speak. Turkey, geophysically located as a bridge between Europe and Asia, has been a melting pot of many civilizations since the beginning of history. Once the land of Hittites, Phrygians, Urartu and Lydians, and later became the home of the Turks. Therefore, its cuisine is not only a mix of all cultures that lived in Turkey throughout history, but also a collage of cuisines from all the lands Turks lived in before settling in what was then called Asia Minor (Anatolia). Oysterbay Farmers Market Good food for good health By Valentina Reale

F

unded by the European Union (EU), the Oysterbay Farmers Market is an initiative to provide the Dar es Salaam urban community with high quality organic produce.

Local and natural were the two key words on August 26, 2017 at the Oysterbay Farmers’ Market, where vendors and organizations from all over Tanzania-Lushoto, Njombe, Morogoro, Tanga, and Zanzibar, gathered to sell their products and to show their food. We are what we eat so invest in good quality produce from the Oysterbay Farmers Market and become better versions of yourself.

Gombe National Park

The ancient forests may look tranquil and serene, but don’t let looks fool you. Underneath the canopy, adventure awaits. Home to many marvellous creatures, one stands out in particular. Get ready for a thrilling encounter with our closest genetic relative: the chimpanzee. Gombe is one of the smallest of Tanzania’s national parks and is easily made up by the sheer excitement of meeting its famous inhabitants. It was Jane Goodall the world reknown conservationist that gave the fully habituated chimpanzees their celebrity status. Her behavioural research program started over half a century ago and is the oldest of its kind in the world, running until this day. Gombe is a haven for researchers, in part due to the large group sizes, with the Kasekela group of at least 40 chimps being the largest.

Eight different primate species are present Herbivores and carnivores are a rarity on the steep Rift Wall and its fringes, making Gombe a dreamland for walking safaris. While trekking through the dense woods – there are hardly any

open areas in the park – prepare yourself for some remarkable encounters. Chimpanzees have true character that they like to express through wild gestures and yelps. With 98% of our genes shared; the feeling of bonding between our species can be a truly magical moment. Although the fierce display of a dominant male can be frightening, no harm is intended; he is just showing his power. Don’t run away, just stay calm and make yourself small!

Gombe is a dreamland for walking safaris But chimpanzees are not the only primates here; no less than eight different species are present. Scan the forest canopy for red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys and colobusses while staying on the lookout for the habituated beachcomber olive baboons, themselves an object of another scientific study. Two nocturnal species occur: the Senegal galago and the South African galago (or bushbaby). Don’t miss out on the wealth on offer in the air and under water either. Over 200 bird species fly around, varying from the African crowned eagle that hunts monkeys, to the iconic fish eagle, three kinds of kingfisher and the bright Peter’s twinspots. Another remarkable character is the palm-nut vulture; a nearvegetarian common to Lake Tanganyika that prefers fruit over carcasses. The lake itself lies on the base of the Rift Valley and harbours about 350 various species of fish, most of them endemic. • After being designated as a game reserve in 1943, it became a national park in 1968. • It covers 56 km2 – plus a 100 m wide strip of coastal water – and stretches 13 km from north to south. • Height: 773 m to 1,500 m (Mitumba). • Average temperatures: 26-30 °C (daytime) and 14-17 °C (night-time). • Dry season: mid-May – October – November, wet season: November – mid-May (less rainy in January – February), no seasonal changes in the dense forest. • Best time to visit: wet season, for plants and insects and better chimpanzee spotting (they don’t roam as far in the wet season). • Just like Mahale National Park, Gombe is a rather remote park, only accessible by boat.

64135_UK Brochure Tanzania.indd 7

• To get to Kigoma: there are scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam and Arusha (private flights organised by safari companies), rail services from Dar es Salaam and a ferry service from Mpulungu in Zambia. Or go by road (4 days): from Dar es Salaam first 980 km on tarmac, then 780 km on earth road (difficult in the wet season). • From Kigoma to Kasekela: by local lake-taxi (up to four hours), or motorboat (two hours, bookings through the park).

Don’t miss out on the wealth on offer in the air and under water either Accommodation Inside the park: one private tented lodge, rest house, bandas, campsites at the Park (booking for rest house, bandas and campsites through the Park).

What to do Guided chimpanzee tracking, guided walks alongside the beach, hiking, swimming and snorkelling. The site of Henry Stanley’s and David Livingstone’s famous encounter (“Dr Livingstone I presume”) can be visited at Ujiji near Kigoma. Or watch the renowned dhow builders at work. NOTE: Strict rules are in place to safeguard both you and the chimps. Allow yourself at least two days to go looking for them; Gombe is not a zoo so encounters cannot be guaranteed. Arusha National Park Diverse Topography Backdrop to Treasures Untold By Wema Kijole “Arusha National Park is a treasure, a rich tapestry of habitats, teeming with animals and birds. From the lush swamps of the Ngurdoto Crater to the tranquil beauty of the Momela Lakes and the rocky alpine heights of Mount Meru, the terrain of the park is as varied as it is interesting.

rusha National Park is the closest national park to Arusha town, located 25 km from town and 35 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport. The park is one of the smallest but most diverse national parks in Tanzania. It has a wide range of vegetation – the slopes of Ngurdoto Crater are covered with rainforest, swamps and lush savannah at

moorland on the slopes of Meru Mountain.

Nature & Wildlife Safari Experience The atmosphere in Arusha National Park is magical. The entrance gate leads into shadowy montane forest inhabited by inquisitive blue monkeys and colourful turacos and trogons – the only place on the northern safari circuit where the acrobatic black-andwhite colobus monkey is easily seen. In the middle of the forest stands the spectacular Ngurdoto Crater, whose steep, rocky cliffs dotted with herds of buffalo and warthog. Further north, rolling grassy hills enclose the tranquil beauty of the Momela Lakes, each one a different hue of green or blue. Their shallows sometimes tinged pink with thousands of a rich selection of resident and migrant waterfowl, and shaggy waterbucks display their large lyre-shaped horns on the watery fringes. Giraffes glide across the grassy hills, between grazing zebra herds, while pairs of wide-eyed dik-dik dart into

the sunrise. Although elephants are uncommon in Arusha National Park and lions absent altogether, leopards and spotted hyenas may be seen slinking around in the early morning and lurking next to waterfalls in the shadowy forest in the late evenings. It is also at dusk and dawn that the veil of cloud on the eastern horizon is most likely to clear, revealing the majestic snow-capped peaks of Kilimanjaro, only 50 km (30 mi) away. But it is Kilimanjaro’s unassuming cousin, Mount Meru, the 4,566 metres (14,990 feet) that dominates the park’s horizon. Birding in Arusha National Park The vegetation in Arusha National Park supports more than 300 species of birds, some migratory and others permanently living in the forests. Birds mostly seen here African Marsh Harriers, and Taita Falcons if you’re lucky.

Activities in Arusha National Park You won’t be disappointed to have a few days safari in Arusha National Park. This park is ideal for a day tour/game drive, which can be combined with walking excursions or acclimatization before climbing Kilimanjaro. It takes about two days to reach Mariakamba Hut and about four days to reach the top of Mount Meru. Moreover, visitors can participate in cultural interaction with Maasai tribesmen of Mkuru Village.

Getting there An easy 40-minute drive from Arusha. Approximately 60 km (35 mi) from Kilimanjaro International Airport. The lakes,
