Interconnection Between Arts

DVC URBAN SCHOOL OF ARTS Diablo Valley College - ARCHI220 ELS’s Anthony Grand Studio 14 Weeks - Spring 2017 In collaboration with: Vincent William Dharma Diablo Valley College plans to migrate its architecture and arts program into off-campus new building where it is now located in the Heart of Oakland, next to cultural Henry J Kaiser Park and Fox Theater. In correlation to the site, the building complex should be sensitive to urban and cultural condition happening on the site and incorporated as a design approach. The building should house Arts and Architecture studios where it should be protected as well as it has 24/7 operation time but shall not lost from its urban engagement Anthony Grand - Head Instructor of ARCHI220

[ A Cultural Area] The site is located between Oakland’s busiest Road, The Telegraph Avenue and 19th Street. It is also located Strategically as Bart Station and Shops can be found within walking distance. The site is also located in front of Fox Teather and next to the Henry J. kaiser Memorial Park. As an enviromentally friendly Urban structure, Incorporation and aware of surroundings is imperative to create harmonious environment with the existing site.

[ Interconnecting ] The school holds the Architecture Departments and the Arts Department, both is seperated into their own building and connected with series of urban landscaping.Inspired form Weiss Manfredi Barnard College building, we study the idea of connecting major assembly area that we applied to our design studio.

[ Stepping Up ] Both Arts and Architecture Building has the same Interconnecting design studio, shown in blue. By connecting the studios, it provides easy access and circulation without bothering external rooms. Architecture building is placed on the back since it is taller and has more programs than the arts building. The arts building is designed with stepping roof as it needs light to enter than the other.

[ Cladding Orientation] Metal Cladding and Curtain wall installed echoes the program inside, emphasizing the continuous low sweeping studios, is the horizontal glass curtain wall with low shading system emphasizing active and flowing condition happen inside studios. The others has vertical oriented Curtain Wall that emphasize the Rigidity of Academic program



[ Collaborative Opportunities ] Interconnected Studios allows student to engage not only with their peers on the same section, but other, as far as their senior. Each floors have their own amenities or support tech that allow them not to disturb other studios during producing, Curtain wall surrounding allow people to engage visually but still maintain their physical boundary.
