OVERLAPPING OF ARCHITECTURE AND ARTS:

01 OAKLAND ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE UC Berkeley - 100D Kurt Lavenson and Cass Calder Smith Studio 12 Weeks - Spring 2019 The project took place in Oakland’s Uptown district, precisely on 1911 Telegraph Avenue, where it acts as a response to emerging arts in the area. As the world of Architecture and Artists overlaps and compliments each other in society, It gives us an opportunity to collaborate and create them a space where they could live, create, and share with their communities. The building will be the architecture of the arts and a creative hub for artists. It is a multistory building that has its own residential for artists reside and staff serving the buildings. The building will be its own ecosystem for artists to create and experimen with plenty of studios whether it is private or public, solitary or communal, open or closed. It sits on a one acre vacant lot next to Oakland historic Fox theatre on the south and Henry J Kaiser Park on the west side

[ Bounded by Fabrics ] The project is located on the heart emerging arts and lifestyle of Oakland.Where it is bounded by two juxtaposed area of active cultural center and commercial areas and the quiet residential and parks. Those area are clearly separated as there are no connection between those two fabrics We envisioned that we could took the existing nature that able recconect those two juxtapose fabric. By creating a slice in the site and let the nature took over, exposing it to each of the opposing fabrics By creating a connection between those two, the fabrics could be more blend in as the park is a part of the telegraph avenue as well as telegraph avenue to the park

[ Gesture >< Movement ] The finalised diagram took after multiple iterations of this version, where the slicing gesture from the site analysis separated the programs based on its adjacentcy of the context, but combined with elevated ground floor to emphasize the gardens that crawls up towards the building. In addition, the raised up sliced programs allows physical viewing of the programs inside that acts as a live marquee from the perimeter. The previous iteration has too much gesture that it become redundant. The final form is to following the slicing gesture on the site analysis creating a green belt in the middle of the sliced volume that initially in a from of fragments that climb up the building. The fragments extruded out in certain parts of the building, giving a hint on the outer facade of the wehereabout of the greenbelt.

[ Public and Private Reconnection] Program is organised based on its adjacentcy to nearby fabrics, and it is recconected by green belt that slice through the entire site. The Noisy programs contains the open studios and gathering area that placed adjacent towards Fox Theatre and commercial area, while the Quiet programs containing residential, enclosed studios, theatre, and gallery are placed near the residential complex.

[FIrst Iteration] The fiirst iteration emphasize on strict diviision between organic greenbelt and rigid building. However the shapes of the greenbelt has too many unnecesary curves that starts overpowering the remaining structure; The building has too uniform enclosure with tall flush wall that are not to sensitive to the surrounding context

[Second Iteration] The second iteration plays on simplification of the greenbelt form to be more organic in form without its uneccesary geometry that reduces the weight of the greenbbelt load, also incorporating the “Framed Openings” on the facade to achieve “Live Marquee” Ideas. The facade is now penetrated with volumes to add more dynamic, in response with site context and the movement of the site slicing gesture. However, the penetration volume is arbitrary in composition and the building still feel separated from the greenbelt.

[ Final Iteration ] In the final iterations, the penetration is reduced to only certain elements of the programs [The cubes] also the form is not only addition but a subtraction of volume as well. The sraircase that stretch along the greenbelt is now extruded out to emphasize the greenbelt movement as well as open up the middle space to be less clautrophobic.

[ Facade Language ] Series of framed voids that made out of metal cladding that allows it looks heavy and architectonic, but it is acually lightweight. The greenbelt uses organic materials that distinguish it from white and transparent building; As the greenbelt goes up, it overlaps with between upper and lower planes. The circulation across two buildings are placed under those overlaps, thus providing shades from weather for those using the walkway

[ Artists Friendly ] The interior adopts wood floor and ceiling giving warmth and homey feeling to the tenants. The greenery from the gardens extend in towards the interior providing more natural looks to the space. As the wall space remains white, It is up to the artists to use it as their own canvas, for experiment and creation

[ Bleed and Blend ] The slicing and adjustment to the site creates a pocket adjacent towards the street and the park. The approach is to take adjacent fabrics and pull them into the pockets. The pockets become distorted and blended as it goes to the middle. The ground floor is split into 3 parts between the studio space and the communal space. The communal space is located in the south easten that containing gallery, bar, lounges and restaurants, with operabble facade to blend the space to the city. It is separated to distinguish access between the artists and the customers.

[ Greens as Buffer Zone ] The programs is organized based on each category so Artist would not have to cross buildings to get into one corresponding programs. The stepping green belt gardens provides artists a retreat with different environment from the studios, allowing them to refresh and unwind before continuing work.

[ A Live Marquee ] The facade are made of series of steel-framed curtain wall that acts as a screen projected to the street from four sides of the elevations. It is made as a response to the Marquee and signs that illuminate Telegraph Avenue. By its framed transparency, the city has visual access to the building by having a sight of activities inside that differs from each frame throughout the buildings. The live marquee extends towards the building where the series of continuous voids allows programs to be transparent as well.

[ The Cube ] The cube is multiuse space that can be used as a studio space, music room, gathering and meeting room, or even an exhibition room with its glass facade that can be turned into opaque if the user wish to work in privateness. The cube is scattered throughout the whole building penetrating each programs that gives the user different experience of each cubes; even though the dimension is the same. The cubes allow the user to view the ongoing activity programs or even viewing the exterior as some of them penetrates the envelopes or located at the roof gardens. The cubes could be rented by building management and it is designed exclusively for artists using the buildings.

[ Penetration Detail ] The building are made entirely with steel type construction. The column, which is an I beam with intumescent latex coating for fireproofing allow it to stand thinner and lighter so that the cubes could feel afloat and the room could become spacious for user to experience
