Solid and Void Part One
01 DOUBLE NEGATIVE UC Berkeley - 100A Maria Paz Gutierrez Studio 4 Weeks - Spring 2018 The production of architecture has often vacillated between privileging the design of external form at the expense of interior space, or vice versa. The project began by resisting either approach, and positing another approach whereby the design of space and form will be thought of together as a complementary and subtractive process. The product of this process will be a three dimensional spatial construct, a Double Negative. For our purposes, we will define a Double Negative as at least two subtractive volumes/voids that intersect to produce a third condition. A thorough investigation and interrogation of the assigned readings will be required to further develop your understanding of the premise. Lisa Iwamoto - Head instructor of 100A

02 STAIRS AND SEQUENCE UC Berkeley - 100A Maria Paz Gutierrez Studio 2 Weeks - Spring 2018 This project is based on previous Double Negative sculpture; transforming the scheme into a sited intervention. Unlike the Double Negative, The stairs has a definitive scale, program, and highly specific site, located in 1616 20th Street, Portrero Hill, San Francisco. It is occupiable, and therefore a work within the constraints of stairs and ramps, floors, walls and ceilings is necessary. Resisting the desire to make to design a conventional building is highly encouraged, as the project must retain and is expand upon the spatial and formal architectural language developed
[ Deconstructed “Tau” Sculpture ] Initial analysis is based on deconstructed Tony Smith “Tau” (1961-1962) sculpture which is created based on split-rotationreintersect operation based on orthogonal vertical and horizontal axis. The series of operation create a sculpture with 3 axis arms which looks balanced, as one arm is trying to rotate to one direction but it is pulled by the other arm. The main body acts as a pivot and the center of mass to the arms
[ Spatial Imagination] Spatial drawing is derived from direct cropping of deconstructed tau elevation. Balanced is the main concept of the diagram; portrayed by the red core in the middle holding two arms that trying to rotate each in different direction, but cancels out by the vectors.

[ Analytical Concept Diagram ] The cropped spatial diagram is translated 3 dimensionally into a rectangular box, thus created a double negative sculpture. Same concept as the spatial diagram, it has a core in which two pairs of wings is pivoting onto the main core. One pair of wings translated from the positive form of the spatial diagram (02) and the other is from the posche part of the wings/ the negative form (03). Both wings rotate in opposing way, creating commutating effect which is like a turbine, counters each other rotation to create balanced act.
[ Spatial Quality ] Intersection between wings into the void core resulting a formation of thin crust framing the shape of the wing as well as directing movement towards the core. The thin crust creates an interconnection of voids which allow periferal voids to be seen in a straight line

03 POTRERO HILL LIBRARY UC Berkeley - 100A Maria Paz Gutierrez Studio 10 Weeks - Spring 2018 The project is designed to enable you to focus on interior social and individual space, sequence and vertical circulation, negative and poche program space, form and envelope in a constrained site. With the proliferation of online media it may seem paradoxical that we are assigning a library program. The structure of libraries reflects the working relationships and processes that take place within
[ Quand Ca Balance ] The stair structure is derived conceptually from the initial double negatie concept; balance. The pivoting wing is stretched all the way towards the end, creating multiple horizontal slices. Looking from the longitudinal section and plans, the wing slices diagonally and it is repeated opposingly. As result, the slivers create a harmonic pattern, crossing each other if we synthesize tha plans and section together. It creates the “X shapes which can be traced back as the concept of the double negative. The middle of The X representing the core, and the line representing the wings.
[ In Between ] The diagonal slice creating a tunneling effect where it creates a space where everything is continuous and engaging as the space gives a hint of what the space next to it without actively participate in the space itself.

With the proliferation of online media it may seem paradoxical that we are assigning a library program. The structure of libraries reflects the working relationships and processes that take place within as well as act as a test bed with which to celebrate an evolving public/private realm. How can the use and operation of libraries adapt to meet the needs of modern standards of exploring and exploiting social space? Once again for the purposes of our studiothe former Potrero Branch Library has burnt to the ground, and a new design is required. However, the former library was deemed too small, so the size has been increased to accommodate additional program.

[ Ratio of space ] The previous stair model is split in half and it is extruded in 3 different ratio as a conceptual study. In the end, As seen in the diagram above, The 50-50 ratio is taken as the final form as it preserve the perforation and create a balanced room size for circulation and the programs.
[ Parenthood ] Division of spaces based on Visitors who bring children and not bringing children. As Library is a space for scilence and space for kids needs to be incorporated but separated to retain it quietness it is achieved by Separating between Non parent space (red) and Parent space (Blue) as shown it diagram
[ Continuity of Space ] There are no boundary of space exist in the space as the space could be extended out from the program; The staircase houses book and its case as well as place to hang out, it can be read as an extension of a reading room as well. The staircase acts as transition between programs not as symbolic, but literally as the books housed in the area start to transform its genre as it moves toward another
