ACCELERATION

izarre chasms open up in thinking about how our individual and collective future, as one hears repeated, is indissolubly tied to innovation in production processes. Our GDP will suffer if we are not capable of reducing production costs while maintaining the same quality, and/or offering the consumer new products and services with a greater added value, or that is more personalised. A sublime provocation that of Carlo Alberto Carnevale-Maffè who, intervening at the Economic Packaging Conference (organised by Italian Packaging Institute) surprised the audience sustaining that «the functional diaspora of packaging is underway… Up to now packaging has had the purpose of guaranteeing the functional protection of Fast Moving Consumer Goods but today, in its becoming smart, one is heading towards a different synthesis of the old and new functions. In particular, with the explosion of home delivery, packaging changes its nature completely, because it goes directly from the production cycle to that of consumption, skipping the distribution cycle»... And to think that we continue to reason in terms of tons. There is truly no turning back from the transition underway, which is proceeding in leaps and bounds, even though it is as if most companies (most people) find themselves at ground zero of the fourth industrial revolution. Indeed the suspicion is that the implementation of the Industry 4.0 paradigm will act as a watershed for the industrial world, both regarding the machine builders and the manufacturers of consumer goods, in fact requiring the expertise and the economic resources virtually exclusively within the reach of the medium-to-large-sized concerns, of which Italy has but few.

«Access to work is a precondition for social inclusion and the development of the individual. Work is one of the most effective infrastructures of peace and peace is only possible with social justice

»

Italian President Sergio Mattarella, at the International Work Conference, June 2019

In this moment in time what appears worrying are the assumptions of dogmatic positions, like those, in particular, that mistake the need for new expertise and professional profiles imposed by the digitalisation of production, with the requalification of the masses of workers expelled from the productive system due to automation. More in general one should avoid correlating technical innovation and ethics: a tricky but essential subject. Rather one continues to play on people’s fears, not mentioning the actual facts, avoiding exchanges of opinions, and instrumentally ignoring the fact that, when it comes down to it, our time on this earth has a limit to it. That is one should devote a little more attention to the facts. “As time goes by”, as Sam sang in the film Casablanca… For my part I once again repropose an old question: «We can either agree with those who sustain that “the question is no longer what we can do with technology, but what technology might do with us”, or else believe that IA is a fairy story, accompanied by a comforting and comfortable moral, hence in the end nothing but good will come out of it for us». Other interesting scenarios probably exist: let’s talk about them, but - please - let’s cut the blather! Our future and that of the coming generations is at stake.

Contents not to be missed. To support the commercial offer, a stimulating program of conferences and round tables on the latest news in the sector, where accredited representatives will take part, enriching the debate with their own concrete testimony. Of note, Tuesday, October 1, a session dedicated to sustainable development and the two round tables “Packaging innovation: what do their brands currently expect from their suppliers?” and “Packaging Innovation - Is the packaging reusable?”. The luxury market in the Middle East will be the subject of a specific focus; with an estimated value of around 13 billion euros (according to Bain & Company, 2018) it is viewed with interest by many luxury brands, although the consumption patterns and expectations of buyers are still little understood. Lastly, among the fixed appointments, a reminder that the most sustainable solutions or the best responsible implemented by the exhibitors will be awarded, as every year, during the Luxe Pack in Green Awards ceremony.

Cibus Tec 2019 22-25 October, Parma Organizers: Koeln Parma Exhibitions Srl

A platform for the food industry cohesive work team, a longterm vision to move from “event” to “global platform” that hosts technologies for all sectors of the food industry. And a partnership, that with Koelnmesse, that has generated an extraordinary teamship. These are the ingredients of the success of Cibus Tec which, with the October edition impending, “verges on the fully booked” and is preparing to welcome around 3,000 professional visitors from 70 countries to the Fiere di Parma premises. Compared to the previous edition, Italian and international exhibitors are on the up (+30%), as is the exhibition area (+25%). Thanks also to the support of ICE-Agency, the 1,300 companies present (there were 1,000 in 2016) will be able to draw on the largest Top Buyer program of all FoodTec fairs.

A

Global showcase. At the fair, technologies will be presented for all agri-food supply chains fruit and vegetables, milk and derivates, meat and fish products, ready meals - with the addition of a new sector, that of bakery, cereal-derived, snacks and confectionery products. A reminder also that for the first time in 80 years of the show’s history, an entire hall will

be dedicated to the most innovative technological solutions for the beverage sector (milk, juice, water, soft drinks, beer, liquor and wine), represented by over 150 among the main Italian and international suppliers. With an area growth of 40% compared to the previous edition, a significant change in pace is also to be seen in the packaging sector, with a complete proposal for all types of packaging, primary and secondary, also covering end of the line and logistics. Hence Cibus Tec will no longer be a showcase dedicated to food processing, but a complete technological “platform” for the sector’s supply chain, unique to the market. «A success that gratifies us but that does not have us stop there» says Fabio Bettio, Brand Manager, who anticipates a future project «With our Koelnmesse partners we are in fact thinking about an initiative featuring the digitization of food machines».

Fabio Bettio Brand Manager

Keyword: Internationalization. For the 52nd edition, there will be 400 foreign brands from 25 nations, which will present the state of the art of Food & Beverage technology (+30% compared to 2016). Of the 40 thousand expected visitors, 25% will be from abroad. Hence these are important results, in terms of internationalization, obtained also thanks to the strategic alliance with Koelnmesse which allows Cibus Tec as of 2016, to be part of the largest permanent world exhibition platform in the mechanical food sector: a virtuous circuit of over 11 thousand companies that includes Anuga, Cibus, ISM, Anuga FoodTec, Prosweets Cologne and twelve other events.

An ultra-sustainable innovation for paper cups JAPAN TO LIGHTEN UP BEER CANS Two of Japan’s biggest beer producers, Sapporo and Suntory, are working together to make cans lighter by designing almost 10% thinner lids. The aim is to cut aluminium usage by up to 3% and consequently reduce wastage and CO2 emissions. The move is necessary given that 70% of beer shipped in Japan is sold in aluminium cans, with Sapporo Breweries handling about a billion cans a year. Asahi Group Holdings, Japan’s top beer company by market share, is also studying similar projects. The Sapporo-Suntory project is expected to be completed and launched onto the market by 2022.

STAND-UP POUCH FOR OLIVE OIL Ireland-based company Smurfit Kappa, one of the world leaders in Bag-in-Box® packaging solutions, recently launched a new Stand-up Pouch for olive oil. Part of its innovative Pouch-Up® portfolio, the new pouch is available as a 1.5 litre unit and weighs 17 times less than its glass counterpart. This weight reduction, along with the pouch’s space-saving format, also leads to a significant reduction in the use of plastic and in CO2 emissions during transport. Smurfit Kappa Bag-in-Box® aims to minimise its impact on the environment throughout every aspect of its operations, from supply through to manufacturing, distribution and recycling. The pouch works with both automatic and semi-automatic filling machines and allows custom labels to be added for increased brand recognition.

Transparent and biodegradable films gives shape to water A group of researchers from the Institute of Applied Sciences and Intelligent Systems (CNR-ISASI), the Institute for Composite Polymers and Biomaterials (CNR-IPCB) and the Center for Advanced Biomaterials for Healthcare of the Italian Technology Institute in Naples (CABHC-IIT) has developed a process for creating a very thin film capable of enclosing and sealing volumes of water or water-based gelatinous materials. The aim of the project is to create a natural form of packaging capable of controlling the “shape of water”. The process occurs instantaneously and completely spontaneously when a small droplet of polymer solution is placed in contact with the surface of the liquid, allowing for custom packaging solutions regardless of the shape assumed by the liquid. The packaging process is suitable for drops

resting on a surface or hanging from an orifice and for liquid films deposited inside a container. The system can also be used for completely enclosing volumes of gel or other highly hydrated materials such as biological tissues of any shape such as spheres, cubes, prostheses and complex organs for transport, preservation and protection from external agents. By controlling the quantity of film used it is also possible to control the thickness of the resultant coating and alter its properties (transparency, permeability to gases, mechanical properties) according to the final application. The researchers believe that the revolutionary discovery has potential for application in the agri-food, pharmaceutical and biomedical sectors.

Pantone: 54 new metallic colours for premium packaging To address the growing metallic trend in the premium packaging segment, Pantone recently introduced a series of new metallic colours for high-end packaging and graphic design. Artful Simplicity Palette. The US colour specialist is further expanding its already wide range of metallic shades with the introduction of 53 new trend-driven colours, including punch red, mint green with teal and coral (colour of the year for 2019) as well as an innovative Rose Gold ink used for formulating more than 25% of the new colours. The full selection features 665 metallic shades. Pantone believes metallic printing inks are an increasingly effective alternative to foil stamping and identifies “sparkling” packaging as a competitive advantage for luxury goods. The expansion of the colour collection reflects a growing awareness

of luxury packaging’s ability to “capture and captivate the eye, adding visual texture and differentiation from surrounding products on-shelf”, explains Laurie Pressman, Vice President of Pantone Color Institute. The 54 colours recently added to the Metallics packaging design line were inspired by the new Pantone Metallic Shimmers, recently added to the Fashion, Home + Interiors System for product design in key lifestyle segments. For designers and suppliers working across materials, this alignment helps ensure that print and packaging colours can be more easily matched to products.

Gerosa: innovation at the center The disruptive power of issues related to the circular economy requires facing challenges of change, certainly not easy to overcome. Aware of the importance of research and innovation in the current scenario, the Gerosa Group (printing and converting flexible packaging) is committed to stimulating the development of new solutions to anticipate industry trends, without ever compromising on the quality of the products. In this regard, the Group’s Innovation Center - which has been operating for some time and that is run by a young and motivated team - aims to activate a culture of innovation at a transversal level, interacting with universities, research institutes, companies, European partners and suppliers of new technologies in order to develop sustainable products. The portfolio of innovative and environmentally friendly solutions, designed by the Innovation Center, includes the packaging solution for coffee beans with degassing valve, recently placed on the Packaging Oscar finalist shortlist: from the heterogeneous starting structure (triple film, formed by PET, aluminium and PE) a polyolefin based composition (PP and PE) and functional coatings for the barrier effect were attained. This and other monomaterial products designed in a green perspective will be on display at FachPack 2019.

LUXURY PACKAGING HAS ITS RENAISSANCE A paper packaging company for luxury packaging committed to improving its sustainability strategies, Icma Sartorial Paper proposes Rinascimento, a circular economy service that transforms the cellulosic waste of companies into creative recycled papers to be reused for their packaging projects. The project guarantees the traceability of the pulp along the entire production chain which, moreover, is shortened and optimized, since the waste is directly used as a raw material, eliminating the intermediate passage of the production of virgin or recycled pulp, which would use chemical products, energy and water. Furthermore, thanks to the reduction in the number of construction phases and to a personalized service planning based on the needs of the customer and the project, material handling operations are reduced. The first customer to experience the Renaissance offer in the field was L’Oréal Italia.

Ever “greener” packaging The Aptar group recently acquired the company Reboul, which specialises in metal packaging, particularly lipstick packaging, and all the associated processes. The first product to result from this new entity: the refillable lipstick tube designed for Lush, a socially and environmentally responsible vegan andcrueltyfree cosmetics brand.Aptar Reboul’s tube is made in aluminium and brass, 40% of which is recycledmaterial, does not contain any plastic and has been designed to be fully refillable and recyclable. Not to mention elegant. The lipstick refills are inserted after removing the black wax tab from their base: then all that’s needed is to slide the stick down by twisting the tube so it slots into place until the next product refill is needed. A new way to use make-up, withminimum waste.

Growing markets

MEXICO is advancing in food&beverage Milena Bernardi

How is a market that proves to have wide development potential changing? The answer lies in the expectations expressed by users of packaging technologies, who came to Milan for a day of study and B2B meetings. n economy in strong growth, with Italy among the major partners. This is what emerges in summary from the data of ICE-Agency, presented in Milan on 23 May during the conference “Mexico meets Italy, a day of encounters carried out in collaboration with Ucima and Ipack-Ima, which saw the participation of numerous Mexican food & beverage buyers who have come to the Bel Paese to meet suppliers of packaging technologies. During the day, Packmedia was able to interview some of the buyers present in the area dedicated to b2b meetings, noting overall broad appreciation for the high quality of Made in Italy technologies and strong interest in making investments in the short/medium term. The degree of innovation, the excellence in after-sales service and the high propensity for a sustainable approach, has everybody agreed in placing Italy among the most important trading partners for the Mexican market.

A

The processing industry. Although wealth is still poorly distributed, Mexico is developing ever greater attention to food intake and food packaging. According to the study commissioned by Ice Agenzia and Ucima from ITBG Mexico, globally, Mexico is the third largest producer of processed foods, with a market worth 42.5 billion dollars. In 2018 the food & beverage industry recorded the presence of 209,575 companies (companies registered with INEGI - Mexico National Institute of Statistics), of which 90% are active

www.packmedia.net

in the food segment and 10% in the beverage segment, with a total production value of 67.5 billion dollars (23% beverage and 77% food). In total, gross production amounts to 86.3 million dollars, of which 63.1 million made by food and 23.2 million by beverage. As far as the food industry is concerned, the largest slice (17%) is conquered by the grain and seed grinding sector, oil and fat extraction, followed immediately by bread and breadmaking products (16%), on a par with the preservation of fruit, vegetables and other prepared foods. 15% is covered by the processing of dairy products, while 11% goes to the slaughtering, packaging and meat processing sector. Foodstuffs for animals (9%), the confectionery sector (9%), fish (1%) and others (6%) are at lower levels. Packaging: materials and machines. Given the expected growth in the various production sectors, the Mexican market offers significant development opportunities for the packaging and wrapping industry. The national production of packaging materials (food and beverages only), in 2017 reached 11.86 million tons (+ 5.1% compared to 2016), for a total value of 14.7 billion dollars. Among the most used, glass with 4.50 million tons, followed by paper and cardboard with 3.02 million, plastic at 2.40 million, wood and metal respectively at 1.18 and 0.78. The local production of packaging machines is practically non-existent, so Mexico is forced to import most of the technology from abroad, in particular lines to improve flexibility and production speed, designed with eco-sustainable criteria and able to maximize the spaces.

On the basis of data processed by the Ucima study office, in 2018 the country imported packaging and wrapping machines for a total amount (including all production sectors) of 759.9 million euros, up 0.7% on the previous year. In first place was the United States with sales of over 214 million euros (28.2% of total quotas), followed by Germany which, with an increase of 19.3% compared to 2017 (194.3 million and share at 25, 6%), managed to overtake Italy, slipped to third place with 193.5 million euros and a market share of 25.5%. Substantial differences in terms of exported volumes classify the other top ten countries: the fourth position goes to Spain with a turnover of 33.1 million euros; then, in order of turnover, Sweden, China, France, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Japan are included.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS The opinion of Mexican technology buyers on market trends, future investments and sustainability. We are particularly grateful to the managers of the companies Alimentos Benefit, Okko Superfoods, Empacadora Mexicana De Puebla, Grupo Herdez and Brauen for their cooperation.

REPLIES

Question How is the food market going in Mexico? O Xavier Arratia Navarro, Innovation & Development manager (Alimentos Benefit). The market is growing more in some categories than in others, for example in organic and in fruit beverages, reflecting a new type of consumer that recognizes the importance of food and makes more informed purchases. The food industry has an important weight on the GDP of our country and has always grown even when the economy has registered downturns. O Oscar G. Alvidrez Tarango, General Manager (Okko Superfoods) I believe that, in Mexico as in the rest of the world, the food industry is developing at a rapid pace due to the constant increase in population: But what really interests us is to promote greater consumption of healthy foods. I would like to stress that Mexico is in second place in the world for obesity in adults and in first place for childhood obesity. It is a problem that worries us a lot, and this is why Superfoods Okko is putting all the efforts necessary to bring quality, vegan and organic foods to the tables of the Mexican population at the best possible price.

16 • 3/2019 selection

O Ernesto Barajas, General Manager (Empacadora Mexicana De Puebla). It is the greater purchasing power of the population that supports the growth of the food industry. Taking into account that Mexico has around 120 million inhabitants, it is easy to understand the volumes that can be generated. In the meat segment, in particular, the consumer has become more demanding and requires higher quality products. Our factory has obtained TIF (Tipo InspecciĂłn Federal) certification, which protects the entire production chain, from animal feed, to the hygienic conditions, to slaughtering methods, to transport, including the cold chain, as a guarantee of public health. It must be said, however, that the highest growth is registered in the organic segment, which is developing at a rate of + 20-25% per year. Our offer already includes organic chicken and cattle, but given the increase in consumption we plan to expand it further, which ensures more substantial gains with larger volumes.

FA C T S E F I G U R E S

O Irasema Gallegos Cortez, Packaging and Wrapping Engineer SR (Grupo Herdez). Without doubt, the food sector is growing and is expected to continue growing steadily. The consumer is increasingly aware of innovations and improvements in food, as these are healthier and have a better impact on the health of those who consume it, as well as foods that generate a lower carbon footprint or, better, with a focus sustainable. Young people are an increasingly important segment of consumers due to the socio-economic changes that the market is undergoing. For example, smaller families and more women workers generate more income for families and generate a greater demand for prepared food, ready to eat.

O Fernando Angulo Morales, Director (Brauen). We are very satisfied with the run of the food market . We have been active for four years in the sauces, seasonings and beverages segment, with growth of 400% per year. Our products, unlike those of some competitors, are cheaper and meet the needs of the weaker consumer groups. We also anticipate important developments for the coming years.

REPLIES

Question What investments do you have scheduled in the short / medium term? O Navarro, Alimentos Benefit. I state for us it is fundamental to pursue ever higher standards of innovation and that we invest in new technologies every year. Investments are proportional to the company’s growth, which is currently + 10% per year, also the result of the brand licensing agreement signed with Nestlè Global in 2015. At the moment we are aiming for new product lines, but we have ambitious plans in the short term to introduce packaging systems for innovative formats. O Tarango, Okko Superfoods. We are currently expanding the production capacity of all our product lines and, in this regard, we are equipping ourselves with machines for processing, packaging and quality control, with investments that, in 2019 alone, exceed those of the last three years. Also in the current year we are planning to launch 20 new products to complete the range, and in 2020 we expect to reach 60 products, which we will also export to Canada, the United States and Central America.

ketchup, spices, guacamole, ice cream, mayonnaise, jam, honey, mole, mustard, pasta, tomato puree, homemade sauces, tea and vegetables canned. We sell our products through a portfolio of exceptional brands, including Aires de Campo®, Barilla®, Búfalo®, Chi-Chi’s®, Del Fuerte®, Don Miguel®, Doña Maria®, Embasa®, Nestlé® Ice Cream, HERDEZ®, La Victoria®, McCormick®, Nutrisa®, entirely Guacamole® and Yemina®. In addition, we have distribution agreements in Mexico for Frank’s, French’s, Kikkoman®, Ocean Spray® and Reynolds®. Taking as a background the aforementioned, it is important to mention that in the last decade the Group has grown by acquiring new business units which push for constant investments towards automation, always keeping the quality and profiles of our products. O Morales, Brauen. We are in the process of buying a volumetric filling machine to package the sauces in sachets (ketchup type). The investment fits into the context of a collaboration recently established with the Bimbo group, interested in combining our sauces with its potato-based products.

O Barajas, mpacadora Mexicana De Puebla. We are about to launch a new line of pre-cooked foods and we have come to Italy to look for technological partners that can help us develop the project. By the end of the year we intend to equip ourselves with two new lines, one for freezing and one for packaging. The product we are building will have a shelf life of two years and will be contained in a can covered with plastic material. The initial production capacity should be around 40 tons/month, and then gradually increase. We still have not identified the supplier, but we are evaluating various offers. The lines will have to ensure energy savings. O Cortez, Grupo Herdez. The Group is a leader in the processed food sector and one of the leading players in the ice cream category in Mexico, as well as one of the leaders in Mexican food in the United States. We participate in a wide range of categories, including organic foods, tuna, burritos,

Question How important is sustainability to you and how are you moving in this direction? O Navarro, Alimentos Benefit. From the energy point of view we have implemented the use of wind energy, while as far as water consumption is concerned we have installed water treatment systems at the Lagos de Moreno plant. In the packaging field, frankly we have not yet achieved significant developments, but it is a challenge that we have taken on and which is among our priorities. The first step, in my opinion, is to begin to reduce the consumption of plastic materials, so as to limit waste in general and the amount of waste in the environment. O Tarango, Okko Superfoods. We consider ourselves a company with important social goals, and we are very proud of this. From an environmental point of view, however, we need to do more, especially in relation to the reduction of plastic, a very important issue for us for which two options are under consideration... We know that the packaging industry is currently working with biodegradable materials and our plan would be to start using them as soon as possible. We are in fact working on a project to change the way our food is marketed from 2020, guaranteeing consumers “zero plastic waste” and more sustainable packaging. Since June 2019 we have expanded our company mission: if before we aimed above all to improve the quality of life of the consumer, now the goal is to safeguard the entire planet. Therefore, among our future priorities are eco-friendly products and initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable development.

O Barajas, Empacadora Mexicana De Puebla. This is one of the hot topics. The new Mexican regulations require companies to pay more attention to the recycling and use of renewable energy. Since everything is very expensive, the Government is trying to finance companies, in order to put them in a position to adopt adequate equipment for the purpose. In Mexico there is an organization - the “Socially Responsible Enterprise” - of which we are part. The member companies must see to the fact that their activities are sustainable at an economic, social and environmental level, transferring the concept to all internal management and planning processes. It is a wide-ranging vision that integrates respect for people, ethical values, the community and the environment. O Cortez, Grupo Herdez. We are committed to the social and environmental needs of the places where we operate, and we look for our programs and projects to be increasingly directed towards a vision of sustainability. As far as the packaging is concerned, we push to work with containers that can be reused and working on campaigns that sensitize the population to recycle the materials as it was done with our tin can. O Morales, Brauen. Our contribution to sustainability comes mainly from the attention we pay to packaging, for which we use 100% recyclable materials, excluding PET which reaches 70%. We have also adopted various water purifiers and equipment that limit waste.

Brief notes on companies Empacadora Mexicana De Puebla, founded in 1917 by the Burgos family, is based in Puebla. It operates in the meat sector (pork, turkey, chicken and beef) which supplies industrial canteens, supermarkets and fast food chains throughout the central and southeastern area of Mexico. Okko Superfoods, on the market for 4 years, is active in the production of organic products (superfoods). The administrative headquarters is in Chihuahua, while the production plant is located in Guadalajara (Jalisco). Grupo Herdez, founded in 1914, is among the Mexican leaders in the food and ice cream sector. The portfolio includes the brands Aires de Campo,

he Report describes the performance of the manufacturing industry sectors (which remains the most significant indicator to understand the direction the packaging industry will take), where packaging consumption is more intense. The evolutionary frameworks of the manufacturing sectors derive from the sectorial analyses done by trade associations, from the database of the Italian Packaging Institute or from Prometeia. A reminder though that the data shown in this issue is that available at the time of writing (May 2019). More up-to-date and complete information on all the sectors can be found in the next Report.

FOOD Food and beverage According to Federalimentare’s analysis, the large food and beverage sector closed 2018 with a 1.1% increase in production. The turnover reaches 140 billion euros (+2% compared to 2017). The sector is still driven by exports, reaching 33 billion with a surplus of over 1 billion, while domestic consumption is relatively stable. Based on recent calculations for the first few months of 2019, growth was around 0.5% while forecasts for the entire year are still very cautious. GDP growth forecasts and low consumer confidence are the main causes of a close to zero growth in the food sector, both in terms of volumes and turnover. However, according to Prometeia, the development trend of the sector should be strengthened for the biennium 2020-2021, with an average annual

The packaging sector Based on the processing of the Italian Packaging Institute, in 2018 the turnover of the packaging sector in Italy should exceed 33.4 billion euros, registering am approximate +2.6% (data at the time of preliminary results). Foreign trade is also on an upturn, although downsized compared to last year, with a growth hypothesis that should settle at around +3.2% for exports, and 5.2% for imports. The balance of trade continues to remain positive, exceeding 2 billion euros: in practice Italy continues to export more than it imports. Production. In quantitative terms, analysing the tons of packaging produced in 2018, a growth of 2.4% is assumed, which leads to the production of empty packaging in Italy to exceed 16,700 t/000. In 2018, domestic demand led to the increase in production (+2.6%), a trend confirmed by data on imports (+1.9%), which recorded better performances than exports (+0.8%), up less than in previous years. In terms of weight, among the different mate-

growth of 1%. As regards exports, 2019 should confirm the trend already registered in 2018 (+3%). NON FOOD Cosmetics and perfumery As far as the cosmetics sector is concerned, the global turnover of 2018 is confirmed at +2%, to which exports in constant development (+3.5%) have certainly contributed, compared to a domestic market with a modest 0.9%. Based on the analysis relating to the first few months of 2019, a +2.6% is assumed for global turnover, with an export trend similar to 2018 (thus confirming +3.5%). But it is on the domestic market that the situation could improve, with growth that should settle at around +1.3%. Chemical products According to Federchimica, after a decidedly brilliant 2017, 2018 closed with growth rates down on the previous year: +1% for the sector total, a number also perfectly in line with the European average. The chemical sector is confirmed as a sensitive thermometer of the general economic trend, as it includes various categories of intermediate products, used in the most diverse industrial sectors. There are many elements to be considered for the slowdown in growth in this sector, above all the oil price increases registered in 2018. The not so good prospects in terms of the economic trend are also of some concern for 2019.

FIRST HYPOTHESES FOR 2020 Starting from 2020 and for the following years there

rials, the performance of wood stands out (+4.5%), driven essentially by pallets and industrial packaging in the face of a constant drop in the production of crates for fruit and vegetables. This is followed by glass packaging, with a global production of +2.9%: in this case, bottles are driving the positive trend, with a presence that is close to 88%. Flexible converter packaging (+2.5%) is continuing on the upward trend shown the previous year, while cellulose packaging, excluding rigid laminated paper-based packaging, is up by 2%. Corrugated cardboard, which alone accounts for more than 73% of cellulosic packaging, leads the trend, with an increase of +2.5%, to be largely attributed to the expansion of online sales, which generates more and more requests for this material. Also in 2018, plastic packaging showed a trend of +1.1%, in line with the trend in manufacturing, followed by metal packaging (steel and aluminium) which increased production by 0.5%. Rigid laminated paper-based packaging is seen to be stable. Turnover. As far as the trend in turnover is concerned, aluminium packaging drives the growth of the entire sector with +4% com-

F PACKAGING will be a recovery of manufacturing activity standing at +0.9% (turnover at constant prices). The consumer goods (+2.2%) and motor vehicles and motorcycles (+2.5%) sectors should feature among the best performances - the latter should reposition itself at the levels of 2018, after two years of contraction in the volumes of activities. Manufacturing activity will also be driven by mechanical engineering, with an average annual growth in turnover at constant prices that will be around 1.7%, a trend determined not only by exports but also by the recovery in domestic demand. The electrotechnical sector should also reach about +1.9%, driven by the automotive sector and building infrastructures. The pharmaceutical sector will maintain growth rates above the manufacturing average (+1.8%). Building industry related sectors should put in a good showing, with metal products at +1.5% and construction products and materials at +1.2%. Chemical and other intermediates will feature in this uptrend, where, however, foreign markets will make the difference. Medium-term growth, on the other hand, is more limited for food and beverages (+1%): it is presumed the sector will consolidate the expansion cycle that has characterized it since 2015 thanks to the Ho. Re.Ca channel and the growing international component.Metallurgy should put in a modest growth (+0.9%), likewise fashion as well as furniture & furnishings, which will register +0.8% each. Bringing up the rear one has electronics (+0.7%) and household appliances (+0.4%).

pared to 2017, followed by glass packaging (+3.5%). The other types of packaging show trends of around 2%, with the exception of rigid paper-based laminates, which remain stable, and of steel packaging that is in decline Raw material prices As regards the trend in raw material prices at the international level, many movements towards the end of the year determined and influenced all of 2018. Starting from oil, based on the analyses prepared by Prometeia, it is noted that Brent, after the October levels in which prices reached 80 dollars per barrel, fell to 60 dollars in the last two months constituting a drop of around 30%. Entering into the analysis of the international prices of the materials used to produce packaging, we note a sharp decline between November and December in steels. It was the hot rolled products, those of interest to the packaging industry, that recorded the most significant dips on the European market: -5% in euro quotations in October, a trend confirmed both in November (-4%) and in December.Plastics, aluminium and cellulosic quotations were more stable.

General economic framework According to the latest IMF calculations, in 2019 the world economy will grow by 3.3%, down however by -0.2% compared to forecasts. The downsizing concerns all the main countries and the elements that have influenced include commercial tension caused by the duties between the US and China. In the United States, GDP will rise from + 2.9% in 2018 to + 2.3% in 2019. Same thing for China, which would go from +6.6 in 2018 to +6.3 in 2019. As for the Eurozone, growth will increase from 1.8% in 2018 to + 1.3% for 2019. In relation to Italy, the IMF reduces the growth of Italian GDP to + 0.1% for 2019, lowering it by 0.9% compared to forecasts. By 2020 the OECD expects growth of 0.6%. According to Confindustria According to the analysis of the Confindustria Study Center, in 2018 the world manufacturing sector underwent a marked slowdown in all the main countries, attributable both to cyclical considerations namely slowing demand, restrictive financial conditions, falling investment, etc. - but also considerations of a structural nature. It is nevertheless established that, in the global context, Italy appears to be the seventh manufacturing power. In this context, Italian industry confirmed the general trend in 2018, with a marked slowdown after a more dynamic two-year period. During the year, and precisely after the summer, the negative effects of the slowdown were highlighted and confirmed, which contributed to closing 2018 with a modest + 1.4%, a trend influenced not only by domestic demand but also by the slowdown in exports. According to Prometeia Based on the latest available Prometeia report (updated May 2019), the Italian manufacturing sector closed 2018 with a growth rate of 1.4%. Slowing down the manufacturing activity compared to the previous year, one aboveall has the auto sector which, in 2018, dropped by 1.7%. In Italy the electronic, pharmaceutical and mechanical sectors are the best performers in manufacturing. The slowdown, which intensified especially in the latter part of the year, was influenced by an economic brake on a global scale. The first data of 2019 are closely linked to the international scenario, characterized as we have seen by a moderate slowdown. It is assumed that the manufacturing activity will remain in line with the main macroeconomic indicators and turnover, at constant prices, should register a certain stability with a growth rate at 0%. However, this can only happen thanks to some recovery during the second half of the year, which will offset the losses of the first few months. The trend of the various sectors of industrial activity will be very diversified and in 2019 the sectors strongly tied to the cycle of investments in machinery will suffer the most: vehicles and motorcycles, mechanics, metallurgy and metal products will be the sectors that will register the least brilliant performances.Italy’s manufacturing industry will be able to find a good expansive rhythm starting from 2020, when turnover should register a growth close to 1%.

Food was the largest client sector in 2018, making up 29.2% of total turnover (2.293 billion euros) and with an export share of 72%. Beverage ranked second with 26.1% of total turnover and exports making up 82% of the segment’s sales. Next came the “Others” segment, including packaging machinery for tobacco, tissue, etc., with 1.584 billion euros (20.1% of the total) and an export share of 86%, then the pharmaceutical machinery sector with 1.36 billion euros (17.3% of the total) and an export share of 79%, with international markets seeing the biggest increases. At the bottom of the rankings were the chemicals and cosmetics segments with turnovers of respectively 291 million and 284 million euros and amongst the lowest export percentages, both 75%. 2019 forecasts. «Given the slowdown in order acquisition in the first quarter of the year, we are very cautious about making forecasts for the current year. Markets are volatile and the geopolitical situation is changing continuously in many countries» said Ucima Chairman Enrico Aureli. «But considering the recovery in order acquisition in the second quarter, we are expecting to maintain or slightly improve on the excellent levels of business we achieved last year».

In addition to the leading company based in Italy, with its two production plants in Cinisello and Soncino, there are five further subsidiaries and affiliates in Europe and America. With around 100 employees, sales of just under € 17 million were achieved in 2018. Possehl is a globally operating diversified group of companies with more than 13,000 employees and a most recently consolidated turnover of Euro 3.8 billion. The Possehl Group consists of nine distinct and separate divisions, one of which is the labeling systems business unit called Possehl Identification

Most recently, in 2017, Italy-based Eidos SpA, a specialist in digital thermal transfer printing, was taken over by the rapidly growing Possehl Identification Solutions division. For Etipack, membership in the international Possehl Group and cooperation with the other labeling companies opens up many opportunities

for further development and growth. «We see Possehl as the ideal successor to our company, with its long-term and sustainability-oriented corporate concept. Throughout the sales process, we have come to know Possehl as an extremely reliable and determined partner» says Davide de Ferrari, representing all the retired shareholders and adds: «We are also aware and pleased of the fact that the sole shareholder of the Possehl Group is a charitable foundation». The project carried on by Possehl relies on continuity and reliability, demonstrated by the fact that - as with all companies in the Group - the company name as well as the registered office of the company are preserved. ISO/TC 313 Packaging machinery: work in progress Regulatory developments in the packaging and wrapping machinery sector: historical excursus and updates, in view of the meeting of the ISO 313 Technical Committee scheduled for October 2019. Paolo Capelli

he interest in standardization in the field of packaging machine safety has distant origins. In 1989 the technical committee CEN 146 was established, which grouped the main European countries around work tables. The process induced in Europe by the Single Act of 1986 (called “new approach”) had recently begun, which established that the Directives, destined to become laws in the various countries and therefore to contain mandatory requirements, would have had a content oriented towards the objectives to be achieved but not to the necessary technical measures. For the technical measures, an intense regulatory development activity was initiated, through the issue of technical standards, which were given the non-mandatory nature but also the presumption of satisfying the requirements of the directives if they were drafted in compliance with the established procedures and the references were published in the Official Journal of the European Community. The non-compulsory aim was so as not to impose the adoption of standard technical measures when the technological development would have made different, potentially better measures available. The presumption of conformity with the requirements of the directives, obtainable while respecting the technical standards, was instead an important measure of clarity since the manufacturers could

T

use technical means that were certainly adequate to comply with legal obligations. Since 1989, in the field of packaging machines, 10 technical standards called EN 415 have been produced which have covered all types of machines. Standards in the making Currently the five oldest standards are being revised to keep them up to date with technological developments over the last thirty years. In this period of time, packaging and packaging machines have in fact largely changed their structure and technical solutions, moving from mechanical kinematics and single motorizations to robotic systems, with multiple motorization and automated command/control systems through intensive use of electronics. The machine-operator interface has also undergone many changes: the machines are set up for remote connections and the maintenance procedures both on the hardware and software parts are very different from the past. In parallel, the reference markets for the major manufacturers have been changing: from domestic or mainly European community markets, we have reached the current situation, in which exports to the rest of the world are decidedly prevalent. In this context the opportuneness of bringing the normative activity from the European tables to the international level managed by the ISO, which is

precisely the world standardization body, seemed evident. Open comparison between the various regulatory approaches On the initiative of UCIMA, the ISO 313 Technical Committee was set up (see box) joined, in addition to the main European countries by the USA, China, Japan; other countries will most likely join soon. The secretariat is managed by the Italian standardization body UNI, which has also been in charge of the European secretariat for thirty years; the presidents of the two European and world committees are also Italian. The ISO technical committee held its first meeting at the end of 2018 and a second meeting is scheduled for next October. In parallel, a working group was set up to develop the first ISO standard, which concerns the “general requirements for packaging machines”. The first meeting served above all to compare European and American regulatory approaches. Europe has the technical standard EN 415-10 and the USA ANSI B155-5: both relating to “general requirements”, differ not so much for the technical measures as for the way they are formulated. The European standard tends to be more deterministic while the US standard mainly directs manufacturers to make accurate risk assessments and puts the emphasis on collaborative relationships between the manufacturer and user of the machines, on the training of users and on the hygiene requirements of machines for the food and pharmaceutical industry which, within the European framework, are currently covered by specific rules. Over the next two to three years, the maximum effort will be made on this project to make a world standard available, appropriate to the state of the art and above all fully shared and agreed upon, so that it can be accepted without exception by the largest possible number of market players. A more precise picture of the orientations of the other countries present at the working table will already emerge from the next meeting in October.

Common standards to avoid conflicts Last April, the ISO - International Organization for Standardization, in fact created the ISO/TC 313 Packaging Machinery Group, approving the proposal presented by Italy for the creation of a new international working group, to be entrusted with the task of developing a series of rulings for the standardization of packaging machines and systems, with particular reference to safety, terminology, classification, design, efficiency and availability. Underlying the “operational” task, is the intent to “find a common language” to reduce potential disputes, improve the transparency of negotiations and, ultimately, share economic benefits thanks to the removal of obstacles. But what are the major problems for companies producing packaging technology that export to foreign markets? Indeed

www.packmedia.net

the most difficult obstacles to overcome are precisely associated with the quantity of non uniform technical rules, the presence of many national certifications and, last but not least, to the customer’s corporate norms and standards, often different from each other. This does not enable homogeneous planning and leads to the strong penalization of some machine builders, forced into an excessive effort to adapt to the multiplicity of technical standards. The working group will try to find a solution to all these problems by proposing univocal international standards, which will not only enable the raising of the quality standards but will also favour both the customer companies as well as packaging machine manufacturers.

Paolo Capelli Coordinator of regulatory activities at the European Committee for Standardization in the field of packaging machines, as well as UNI group coordinator and member of the Safety Commission.

Recyclable packaging and clean energy: The green commitment of Coca-Cola HBC Italia The environmental results achieved by Coca-Cola HBC Italia and presented on 27 June in its 15th Sustainability Report are truly exceptional. The four manufacturing units use exclusively energy from renewable sources and packaging is already 100% recyclable. The results stem from long-term projects involving the entire value chain, from the energy supply in drink production – adopting cogeneration plants installed at the production sites in Nogara (VR), Oricola (AQ) and Marcianise (CE) which produce energy, heat and chilled water – through to attention to post-consumption product life in accordance with European circular economy principles. In terms of packaging, the company is focusing on four strategic goals. The first is to reduce the weight and volume of packaging through actions such as the use of

lower-weight plastic (PET) bottles, which are now 14% lighter, and greater use of recycled plastic. Optimisation of secondary packaging is the second area in which Coca-Cola HBC Italia has achieved significant results with a 50% reduction in weight. Thirdly, the company has begun using recycled materials and aims to reach 10% recycled plastic by December 2019 and 50% by 2030, exceeding the targets set by the European Union. Finally, in collaboration with CONAI system consortia, the company is encouraging consumers to dispose of packaging correctly. In keeping with the Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company Group’s commitments for 2025, actions also include attention to the growth and wellbeing of the more than 2,000 employees and community involvement in the areas where the company operates (20 Italian regions).

MG2 starts a new revolution in the capsule filling market The innovative EXTRUDOR ™ powder dosing unit designed by the Italian-based company will be introduced for the first time at Pack Expo show.

Always synonymous of continuous motion capsule filling machines, MG2 is one more time the key player of another Pack Expo Las Vegas, technological revolution in North Hall - Booth N-227 the field in which for over 50 years the Italian-based company is a market leader. To date MG2 is the only company of the pharmaceutical machinery industry able to offer both continuous motion machines with dosator system and intermittent motion machines with tamping pins technology: now MG2 can offer a solution that will leave its mark on the intermittentmotion capsule filling market. In fact, the intermittent-motion capsule filler model AlternA70N, which is produced since 2007, will be the first machine equipped with a revolutionary new powder dosing unit. Unique in its genre in terms of innovation, the so called new

EXTRUDOR™ unit allows great flexibility, thus making it possible to modify the dosed powder quantity through simple and rapid adjustments without changing the dosing disc. Flexibility, accuracy and uniformity are the fundamental features of this new technological solution, characterized by a patented dosing system, which improves the product’s treatment, increases the dosing precision and reduces powder dispersion in the environment as never it happened before, thus turning into shorter cleaning times and lower maintenance costs. This innovative industry technology is once again the result of the intuition of the MG2 founder, Mr. Ernesto Gamberini, who after having introduced the continuous-

motion movement in the pharmaceutical machines in 1966, now brings MG2 to make a new fundamental step forward as market leader in the production of capsule filling machines.

The MG2 Packaging Division will show the horizontal case packer model GSL10, designed to form, fill and seal RSC cases for the American market, with a speed of 10 cases/minute. GSL10 is easily accessible thus allowing a simple and fast size change over. The machine is also serialization/ aggregation ready and equipped with FIFO verification system.

The EXTRUDOR™ dosing unit will be installed on the intermittent-motion capsule filler model AlternA70N, which can both reach speed up to 70,000 capsules/hour and be equipped with powder and pellets dosing unit, also in combination. It can handle capsule sizes from 00 to 5, including elongated and tamper-proof capsules. The machine can also be equipped with a statistical weight control system.

KHS now also labels cans With the Innoket Neo labeller, KHS is expanding its product portfolio in the field of labelling systems. This machine stands out for its compact size and low energy consumption (just 5 kilowatts/hour) and is specially designed for labelling cans. In particular it enables manufacturers of small batches and producers with a high brand variety to respond much more rapidly and flexibly to the steadily growing variety of products and labels on the market. With this innovative system the design or logo can be changed within a few hours. Producers can even print their own self-adhesive film or paper labels, considerably shortening the time to market and allowing costs to be cut as larger numbers of unprinted containers can be purchased. The new machine derives from the established Innoket Neo module system and has an hourly labelling capacity of up to 35,000 full or empty cans in all standard sizes. The machine can be positioned upstream or downstream of the filler. Format changeovers are quick and do not require any additional tools..

A flexible team is a winning team

The Liquid Primary Packing (LPP) Business Unit of Fameccanica can boast several years of experience: in fact it has been operating for some time in the design and manufacture of machinery for filling rigid plastic bottles with liquid products, both for Beauty Care and for Home Care... and this well before the BU itself was made official. The “guiding principle” of Fameccanica LPP has always been flexibility: of process, design as well as project management. As engineer Rocco Amicone, manager of the BU explains: «Being flexible is a must in a changing market like the one in which we operate. What for others may prove to be an effort is actually a natural attitude for us. We never say “no” to our customers, rather we discuss with them about the best solution to adopt. And what is “different”, for

us, represents a challenge that needs to be overcome». Some examples? «For a Home Care line - says Amicone - we made a prototype, equipped with components in anticorrosive material in special alloy, and with mechanical parts and software capable of handling very different types of bottles and caps, also thanks to the use of our universal automatic capper with electronic cam, which enables the attainment of very high format change speeds. Recently, again for Home Care, - continues the manager - we delivered a complete production line, together with the blowing head and bottle transport system. Something anything but easy. Our team, in this case, was able not only to follow the customer’s specifications with extreme precision, but also to develop an impeccable project management system, with the LPP as the only interface between the customer and the suppliers of the

numerous components of the line. This led to a lean project, which achieved success beyond expectations. Last but not least, I want to mention the supply of modules to be installed on existing machines: the flexibility in this case is everything since, often, the existing lines are dated and do not reflect the degree of automation of our solutions, yet we manage to reach the goal without difficulty». Among the first to market a robotic bottle orientator, Fameccanica LPP has always innovated, constantly expanding its range of available technical solutions. Which, to stay on the subject, demonstrates maximum flexibility, openmindedness and… excellent teamwork.

Experts in hybrid technology FINISHING. During the much appreciated open house in June 2018, Prati showed a preview of its new features in finishing that it will bring to the Labelexpo fair. Focus on the Digifast hybrid finishing machine, which combines flexo and digital in line, and on Digifast 20000 which, developed for flexible packaging, allows the company to move from narrow to mid-range solutions. Organized in 12 stages to show all the sections of the Faenza (RA) plant and the finishing technologies for labels and for the most varied supports used in the decoration of products close to, the open house was conceived by Prati to offer a strategic opportunity for customers. «By presenting the machines that we will be bringing to Labelexpo as a preview - explains Chiara Prati, sales & marketing director and owner of the company of the same name - we have made sure that our customers can decide to invest and receive the

machines before the fair, compared to other labeling works or converters, guaranteeing them a real competitive advantage... which testifies to our vocation to be recognised as partners and not just “simple” suppliers». correction made by the operator is then checked and approved by the camera, guaranteeing the end user (the pharmaceutical companies, Ed.) correctly printed labels at all times». In addition, in the same pass, the machine performs the numbering on the back, a function required in the pharmaceutical field to certify the number of labels present in the final roll, thus avoiding that a part of the material ends up on the parallel market. Then the machine performs cutting and rewinding, all in one step: hence an optimized and at the same time safer process, thanks to the reduced handling of the reels. «For the wine industry - adds the manager - we have instead developed a modular platform, which enables the embellishment of previously printed labels in offset or digital. It can apply foil both hot and cold (in partnership with Luxoro, Ed.) And also has the ability to apply relief varnishes in screen printing with digital technology. And this is a real innovation because, to date, the embellishment was applied in a traditional way with flat or semirotary technology». Among the solutions at Labelexpo we should also mention Saturn Omnia, which can work on any material, paper or plastic (from reel to reel, from reel to sheet, from reel to label), and treats any type of label: blow mold, wet glue, shrink sleeves, wrap around, IML, no label look... Think hybrid «An important new feature - says Debora Antimi, Prati Sales & Marketing - is the Digifast hybrid, which comes from the integration of a Screen digital printing unit on the Digifast one model, with a 330 mm web width. The hybrid model,

designed for in-line printing and finishing, combines conventional flexo or rotary flexo technology with digital inkjet technology». The line consists of a flexo printing group before the digital unit, to make the white; then follows the digital register printing on the white, subsequently a second flexo group for decoration with liquid silver by Schmid Rhyner, and then, diecutting, cutting and rewinding. Space for the mid-range Focused so far on narrow band machines up to 500 mm and mainly for self-adhesive labels, thanks to a recent request received from HP, Prati has launched Digifast 20000, a solution for the medium range (from 500 to 800 mm) destined for flexible packaging. which will come with the HP Indigo 20000 machine. «At Labelexpo - continues Chiara Prati - we present two models: one in the 670 mm range and the other 760 mm for finishing flexible materials for shrink sleeves, wraparounds and mold labels. We are therefore differentiating ourselves not only in terms of materials that can be processed and applications, but also in terms of range, in order to satisfy the demands of flexible packaging converters, very different from those of labeling works». The features of Digifast 20000 are related to the type of finish that can be applied to the material: it does not just coat, but also does spot varnishing, cold foil decorations and even spot printing, using one or more flexographic units, even semi-rotary ones. And it reaches speeds up to 400 m/minute depending on the type of decoration.

Focus on the customer, with pluspoints Constant investments in research and development allow Prati to offer state-of-the-art technologies at competitive prices «fundamental, given that basic solutions similar to ours are offered by numerous competitors, Chinese, Indian and Eastern Europeans»). In terms of technology, what distinguishes the company is still flexibility, linked both to the company and to the modular concept of the machines, designed to measure according to customer needs. «Not surprisingly - remembers Chiara Prati - one of our guiding principles is “standardizing customization”. And this makes the difference, along with the fact that when a user chooses Prati, he knows he can count on knowhow gained in 46 years of activity. Furthermore, since our machines are modular and futuristic, the customer has the assurance of making a protected investment over time and, in the case of new needs, can add modules or accessories, adapting the machine accordingly». In short, a high-value technological proposal supports the evolution of the customers themselves, but service also plays an essential role. «In Prati, the average time to generate an offer is measured in hours, not days, and we guarantee assistance every day, including weekends. Moreover - concludes Chiara - in order to be “our customers’ warehouse”, most of the consumables and accessories are readily available in stock».

of low contrast codes. Finally, the new integrated lighting combines advanced autofocus technology with distance sensors to always guarantee the best image formation. Fast and reliable automatic tuning allows operators to configure new applications in seconds. DataMan 370 shares the same light and lens options as the DataMan 360 and 470 series, allowing technological updates without interruption. The new series is easy to install and features an intuitive user interface and real-time process performance feedback.

Based on its experience in the sorting and fulfillment processes, the company developed an evolved

version of the wrapping machine, the e-Wrap 2.0. It not only allows packages of variable sizes to be packed with different types of films, but it also integrates and automates advanced processes, perfectly meeting the needs of higher efficiency, smart work management and cost saving, things experienced by companies active in the sector.

The e-Wrap 2.0 operating concept is modular data connected. Feeding is automatic, packages are picked up from the racks containing orders to be packed and shipped; an unique identification code is assigned at this stage. Thanks to a special feeding system created by Sitma, it is possible to print in line documents (i.e. invoices) and labels that can then be applied and integrated with the package. Wrapping: the packaging machine operates in a vertical direction, guaranteeing a tailored film-wrap applied to products of different sizes and shapes, reducing the film waste and quickly performing the various operations of cutting, welding, weighing and Labeling. Data collected during these operations are then exchanged In Cloud and are used to set in advance the following steps such as Sorting, distribution and last mile delivery.

Cosmetic packaging systems For over 35 years, TGM - Tecnomachines Srl has been designing and manufacturing automatic tube filling machines for filling and closing tubes, as well as automatic cartoning machines for packaging tubes, blisters, bottles, cartridges, jars and lipsticks.
