Some of these include building and decorating birdboxes, minibeast hunts, pond dipping, planting up tubs and hanging baskets, sowing seeds, sowing and harvesting fruit and vegetables, weeding, making windchimes, making birdbaths, designing mosaic garden signs, scavenger hunts and decorating plant pots. After collecting the “Let`s Grow” vouchers from Morrisons supermarkets, we have been lucky enough to add further to our equipment and we also now have our very own greenhouse and garden shed. Our “Garden Gang” also tend the main school garden, where each year group have their own raised bed to grow their own plants, fruits and vegetables. In previous years our young gardeners have worked closely with the Baildon In Bloom committee, helping to plant bulbs in Baildon village and getting our school ready for the judging of Baildon in Bloom. Our club also get involved each year with enterprise projects in school. Some of these have included growing daffodils and selling them to parents after school just before mothers day and making natural Christmas wreaths and cards which were sold at our Christmas Fair.

One of our favourite projects of the year is making the scarecrows for the annual “Wacky Scarecrow Walk” organised by the Baildon In Bloom committee, in which we came first place in its initial year and second place in the second year of the competition. We are just starting work with an environmental group called “Habitat Heroes”, and are all very excited at the prospect of the different projects which, we as a school are going to be undertaking in our school grounds. Our “Garden Gang” have already sown a meadow full of wildflowers near the new Sandal Childrens Centre. We are also planning our own school allotment, a sensory walkway through our woodland area and some living willow sculptures. Our young gardeners have also been asked to give a short presentation at the next Neighbourhood Forum meeting to be held at Sandal in July, detailing all the varied gardening activities and projects that
they undertake at school.

How Clean is Your Oven? Spring is the perfect time for homeowners to get their house in order and this usually includes the one job that is constantly overlooked... the over-worked oven! Even the most enthusiastic of Spring cleaners find donning rubber gloves and tackling the oven one of the most loathed household chores, and if people are not thorough with their oven cleaning, fat and food can cause future problems which could result in an oven fire and it’s also a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and germs. This is where Ovenu comes to the rescue! Owner, Richard Greenwood, runs the local franchise of Ovenu, the UK’s most prestigious oven cleaning company, and his is a true family business as four of his team of six oven cleaning technicians are members of his family. Richard said: “People don’t realise that the more you use your oven the more debris and grease starts to build up and this can
affect its efficiency. Remnants of food could still be lurking in the oven, hiding behind the panels, behind the fan cover or even dribbling over the heating elements in those hard to reach places.” The whole Ovenu process takes around three hours and leaves the oven, hob and exterior in immaculate condition. So call Richard today to arrange for that most hated cleaning job to be taken care of so that you don’t have to! For further information Call Richard on Tel: 0800 140 9800 or log onto www.ovenu.co.uk

WOW!
Look at me now! Wow, I am so impressed at how easy it really was to lose my weight with SureSlim. I started at 16st 13lb – I had reached crisis point. The size 22/24 clothes were starting to get tight and this wasn’t good news. Having medical problems including Multiple Sclerosis and IBS meant losing weight was previously a battle. I had tried most things but never found something I could stick to. I had seen with my own eyes other people that had joined SureSlim and achieved great things. I knew this was the path I was going to have to take. I was scared and worried at how things would have to change but after my initial visit I felt confident that with the support of my consultant I would give it my best shot. My plan arrived and with trepidation I embarked on my new quest. My new life! Within a few months my cholesterol was completely normal but the benefit was really to the IBS. I no longer need to take the medication for this as the plan seems to have sorted it out – telling me that it’s the right food going in my body. It didn’t take long for people to start noticing that I was losing weight and this of course made me feel fantastic. My willpower was definitely encouraged by
the fact people were commenting but also that the weight was coming off at a super but sensible rate. I reached goal after 9½ months on SureSlim meaning I had lost 7½ stone. It’s truly amazing. Bingley Show Myrtle Park Bingley on Sun 8th August 2010
A Great Day Out For All The Family
W
ith the last few weeks running up to Bingley Show, there is some good news; Ireland Bridge which has cast a shadow over the event for the last two years with the threat of closure on show day is re-opened in time for this year’s show. This will make access from the south so much easier.
The closure this last six months has been a real problem for people on both sides of this very important link bridge and everyone in Bingley, Harden, Cullingworth and surrounding areas will be glad the disruption is over. Although the show is a one day event, the fact that all normal access routes are available leading up to the show, and on the day, is very good news, as Bingley Show is extremely popular with people travelling from all over the region
to attend. The threat that Ireland Bridge might have been closed for the show day has meant there will be only a limited number of horses at this year’s show. This was the same for 2009 and by having a very varied programme in the main ring we overcame the problem with almost everyone agreeing that the organisers had put on a really entertaining day. This has made them confident that 2010 will be another great year for Bingley Show. New to the main ring will be a crazy clown feature, sure to entertain the kids and no
doubt provide lots of fun. Then for older children the motorbike display team is back. In the past this has been a popular spectacle and the noise and thrills will once again wow the crowds. Add to this the old favourites of the sheep dog display, falconry, heavy horses, and a riding for the disabled demonstration, plus many more attractions and it will make for a great day out for all the family.
SPECIAL 4 PAGE PULL OUT OF BINGLEY SHOW
I
t will soon be August, and time again for Bingley Show. I remember my school summer holidays with great pleasure spending hours with my mother looking around all the varied tents and exhibits, not realising the effort and hard work by so many people to put on this annual extravaganza. Indeed I only ever remember missing one show, having my wisdom teeth removed! I have been involved with showing stock, and organising the cattle and sheep for some years now, and have a totally different view of it, to those of my youthful expeditions to Myrtle Park. This year I will hand the reins to my 12 year old son, Harry, to show our sheep, with the hope of some prizes at the end of it! I am proud and privileged to be this years President, and the first to take over from a lady! The show, as you will see, is a family day for me, and I hope it is the same for all who visit, with a little bit of something for everyone. Once again there will be no show jumping, but there will be a wide and varied programme of attractions through the day in the main ring from a Cattle parade to a stunt show, as well as thousands of exhibits including a cat section which is the only one still held in a tent at an agricultural show anywhere! I look forward to welcoming you all to Myrtle Park on Sunday 8th August for a great FAMILY day out. Martin Preston, President

O
ur field workers sow courgettes in small pots in late March or early April, covered with fleece to protect them from frost. The plants are often flowering within a month, when the covers are removed to allow pollinating insects in. Picking normally begins in mid June, and by July the courgettes are in full swing. Our challenge is to stay on top of the picking and avoid too many over-sized rejects. Courgettes keep best in the bottom of your fridge. They keep their appearance for two weeks or more, but the flavour and nutritional value decline much more quickly. Eat them as soon as possible; old courgettes are tasteless but a really fresh one, straight from the plant, is fantastic. Deep fried courgette flowers, stuffed with ricotta and spinach and eaten in batches as they come out of the pan, are one of the best things on earth, but you’ll need to grow them yourself. We would love to put courgette flowers in our veg boxes, but they are just too delicate to last the journey from the farm. Also, we might accidentally give you an unwelcome freebie… slugs love to curl up and take a snooze in the flowers. Find some freshly-picked courgettes and try Jane Baxter’s recipes; the chocolate courgette cake has even been known to convert veg-averse children! Find these and other recipes in the Riverford Farm Cook Book.
about the box scheme Guy Watson began farming at Riverford in Devon over 20 years ago. He was an organic vegbox pioneer, giving customers the freshest possible seasonal fruit and veg at a fair price to everyone. chocolate courgette cake
slow cooked courgettes
by Jane Baxter
by Jane Baxter
Instructions: Line a 20x35cm baking tray with baking paper and preheat the oven to 190ºC. Mix the butter, oil, caster sugar and soft brown sugar together until light and fluffy. Gradually add the beaten eggs, stirring well, and then the milk until mixed thoroughly. Sift the dry ingredients together and fold into the mixture. Stir in the grated courgettes and vanilla. Spoon the mixture carefully into the tin. Bake for about 40 minutes. Cut into squares whilst still warm.
Instructions: Slice the courgettes into ovals about ¾cm thick. In a large pan heat the oil and fry the courgette slices in batches until slightly coloured (don’t put too many in the pan at once or they won’t brown). Add the garlic to the pan and cook with the courgettes for a few minutes. Add the lemon zest, capers and half the chopped dill and cook for about 30 minutes over a medium heat. Season well and sprinkle with vinegar and the remaining dill.
