ell 2016 has started like a damp squib! The weather has not been as bad as December (it couldn’t possibly be, could it?), but it’s been dark, dismal and wet, wet, wet! However, spring is on the way, along with lighter, brighter and longer days…hurrah! For the first time this winter I have personally felt the effects of S.A.D. (seasonal affected disorder). I had heard about it but thought it was an urban myth; that is until I started finding it difficult to wake up on dark mornings, didn’t want to venture out most evenings and felt pretty fed up and listless.

Enter the best present I ever bought myself, a natural daylight lamp and alarm clock. So now over a twenty-minute period the lamp recreates a natural sunrise in the bedroom and when it hits its peak, a dawn chorus fills the room, and I actually do feel so much better…or is it all in the mind? Who cares, it works for me! So, in this edition of H&N we have many features to reflect the changing season. Especially the start of wedding season and if you are planning a wedding, you will find lots of fabulous hints and tips right here. Fashion, flowers, venues, honeymoons, cakes and venue styling, even pre-nups - it’s all right here. It’s also the time of year when most of us take stock of our health and wellbeing, so we talk about the complete coordination of mind, body and spirit with pilates and the benefits of personal trainers to help you on your way to your personal health nirvana.

Princess

VERA Written by Lorraine Pitman

THERE COMES A POINT IN EVERY WOMAN’S LIFE WHEN SHE WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH ‘THE ONE’. THE DRESS THAT IS, AND FOR MANY BRIDE’S TO BE THAT DRESS OF DREAMS WILL NO DOUBT BE THE CREATION OF BRIDALWEAR VISIONARY VERA WANG. FOR MORE THAN TWO DECADES, THE RIDICULOUSLY CHIC NEW YORKER HAS RELEASED COLLECTION AFTER COLLECTION OF RELEVANT DESIGNS AND SHE SHOWS NO SIGN OF SLOWING ANY TIME SOON. WANG IS AN ENTREPRENEURIAL POWERHOUSE WHOM AT 61 STANDS AT THE HELM OF HER BRIDAL, FASHION AND LIFESTYLE EMPIRE WITH A REPORTED NET WORTH OF A COOL $1 BILLION. THOUGH AS EFFORTLESS AS SHE MAKES CREATING BRIDAL PERFECTION APPEAR, WANG ADMITS, ‘IT’S BEEN A TRIP OF PASSION, BUT IT HAS NOT BEEN A QUICK TRIP. NOR HAS IT BEEN EASY’. WE TAKE A LOOK AT HOW VERA WANG HAS BECOME SYNONYMOUS WITH DEVASTATINGLY BEAUTIFUL WEDDING GOWNS AND HOW SHE HAS EARNED HER TITLE AT THE TOP AS PRINCESS V. 6 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

Determined from an early age, Wang’s tenacity and will to succeed has gained her recognition in many endeavours. She has been a figure skater who only narrowly missed out on making the ‘68 US Olympic team. She has been the fashion editor of Vogue magazine (make that the youngest ever fashion editor of Vogue magazine) who held the position for 16 years. She has also been a design director at Ralph Lauren, and all this before the notion of bridalwear even entered her thoughts. There’s no doubt that it’s her driven character that has got her places in the bridal industry and she credits the most of it to her Father who made his millions in the pharmaceutical industry. ‘I think, in a way, watching him grow his company influenced me sublimely’. Vera’s Mother was also a great influence; somewhat of a fashionista herself she took Vera to her first Yves Saint Laurent couture show as a child. Wang admits, ‘I really have been educated in fashion. I grew up with it, exposed to the greatest’. It seemed only logical then that in 1989 the bride to be would decide to design her own wedding gown when disappointed with the slim choice that was available. ‘There wasn’t anything that really satisfied the needs of modern women’. Expressing her dis-taste of gowns at the time she explained, ‘Everybody doesn’t want to wear the four inch cap sleeve where you can’t lift your arms and a bodice of sequined lace with a big pouf skirt. I just thought there was another vision’. The $10,000 dress she designed and commissioned to be tailored was the beginning of what was to become the cornerstone of the Vera Wang brand; bridalwear. During her time at Vogue, she worked with the most successful fashion designers in the world. She learned to anticipate trends and understand design principles, but without any specific knowledge of bridalwear it meant that she was able to bring a certain level of freedom to her collections. She explains, ‘It was just sort of instinctive.

It was whatever I felt and what I thought girls should want to wear’. Dancing in front of a mirror for many of her skating years and assessing her body and movements had also given Vera an exceptional understanding of the female form. She has an in depth knowledge of how to flatter, accentuate and disguise using different lines and shapes. ‘When I dress a woman, my design intention is to give her an attitude or a grace’, she says. She believes the most important thing to take into consideration when designing a dress is that it should be a true reflection of the bride. Since the opening of her first shop in 1990, Wang has given the bridal industry a radical makeover. She has created a brand aesthetic which is both youthful and simple but with an air of sophisticated drama. ‘I try to bring an edginess to a traditional business’. Wang has developed many signature traits, but probably most notable is her romantic draping. It takes great skill to achieve such detailing whilst preserving clean lines and an elegant silhouette, but on a Wang gown it’s flawless every time. She is master at using these traditional techniques and applying them with a modern nonchalant attitude. It’s this perfect balance which makes the Vera Wang brand so unique and successful. Every new season Wang pushes the boundaries of bridalwear and continues to redefine the wedding dress. She explains, ‘You can’t become obsolete like couture. You have to stay relevant’. She admits that as she’s gained knowledge, the parameters of what she can and can’t do have become evident. There is a fine line, but she always treads it well. ‘I take a lot of stylistic and visual and intellectual liberties with the concept of a wedding gown. Every season I try to change it.’ Such liberties have included, black, red and pastel coloured gowns (some stained with tea), the risque use of sheers, and a range which featured lace underwear. It’s fair to say that her 2016 collections aren’t for the faint hearted; Vera describes the designs as ‘intimate and personal’. The SS collection can be seen in the short film ‘Hotel Madrid’. Figure hugging dresses leave little to the imagination, especially when paired with sheer Chantilly lace fabrics. Drama is created with plumes of black ostrich feathers and somehow she makes even the most minimalist of dresses appear sensuous. The AW collection ‘Hotel Madrid Part 2’ follows closely with similar slinky silhouettes and sumptuous fabrics. She leaves us, as usual, in anticipation for what’s to follow in 2017.

Revolution BRIDES OF THE

E

Written by Lorraine Pitman

very woman dreams of her traditional, white, princess dress right? You know the big meringue, swathes of tulle and beautiful bejewelled bodice? Well actually, for a growing number of brides it’s not the case. For some of us the thought of the long established ‘wedding dress’ actually sends us cold. I mean we’re not talking about sashaying down the aisle in a tracksuit, but there are more options than the glossy bridal mag fantasy would have you believe. Brides need to be able to express themselves on their wedding day and that may mean breaking the mould. There’s a bridal revolution taking place ladies and we are here to take you FROW. For the most of us, our wedding dress will be the most expensive dress we will buy, so shouldn’t it be exactly what we want? Unless you’re in the bridal industry, the majority of bridalwear designers are pretty much unheard of, yet many brides continue to pay a small fortune for gowns that don’t tick all the boxes. Unless you find a dress you really love, then don’t feel pressured to buy into a bridal designer name. Instead why not purchase that McQueen or Valentino you adored, who says it has to be a ‘wedding gown’ per se? If abandoning all traditional aspects is a step too far, then take a look at a crossover designer like Amanda Wakeley. Her beautiful collections cover both evening and wedding gowns and they don’t scream ‘bride’. White not your colour? Why not scrap it for something more you instead then. Queen Elizabeth set the trend of wearing a white dress back in 1840, so we’re long overdue a colour revival. Trailblazing celebrity brides have included Kiera Knightley in pink, Elizabeth Taylor in yellow and Dita von Teese in purple.Oh, and let us not forget Gwen Stefani in her dip- dyed John Galliano! Whatever shade you’re inclined towards whether it be a feminine pastel or punchy bright, we say go for it. If you still want to keep a traditional style then why not opt for a bridesmaid dress? Watters have a huge collection of bridesmaid dresses in an array of colours, and better still they’re half the price of a wedding gown. Maybe when it comes down to it dresses just aren’t your thing at all. Well that’s fine; today’s bride has endless options if she’s brave enough. Be inspired by Solange Knowles’ chic take on bridal wear; she wowed looking ultra modern and seriously cool in a pristine white jumpsuit and cape (though rocking up on a bicycle is optional). Or how about a tailored wedding suit instead? Nobody could forget SATC’s Carrie Bradshaw in her cute, vintage silk ensemble when she finally married BIG. Many wedding ceremonies these days don’t call for the traditional dress and Carrie is a perfect example of a bride who initially circummed to the pomp and circumstance of a wedding choosing a flamboyant gown, but in the end went with her heart.

JUST BEFORE YOU SAY I DO... I

t is not exactly rocket science to identify that when a couple are planning to get married, the thought of what would happen if they were to divorce will be the furthest thing from their minds. After deciding upon a venue, picking a dress, choosing the flowers, arranging the cars and booking a honeymoon, entering into a prenuptial agreement rarely appears on an engaged couples “to do” list. Ironically however it could be the one thing they wished they’d done if the marriage sadly does not work out. Juliette Kinsey of Kinsey & Co Solicitors explains more: What is a Premarital Agreement?

Premarital agreements, otherwise known as prenuptial agreements, set out in basic terms what each party can expect from the other financially in the event that their marriage breaks down in the early years. Clearly, it would be impractical for parties to decide what would happen in the event of their marriage breaking down after 10, 15 or 20 years. Such marriages have been long term partnerships often through thick and thin and difficult times. The purpose of most premarital agreements is simply to identify what happens in the event that a marriage breaks down within the first five years. In other words, a premarital agreement is in some respects an insurance policy against a short-term unsuccessful marriage. After all, if one party has spent ten years working and acquiring their own assets, why should they then have to share them equally with a person whom they have only been married to for 12 months?

What is required for a Premarital Agreement to be taken seriously by the Courts? In order for courts to give weight to premarital agreements, both parties need to be able to show that they both sought independent legal advice as to their respective positions, before signing any premarital agreement and the signing of the agreement should be in a timely manner before the wedding. Presenting your future husband or wife with a premarital agreement to sign the night before the big day will not work!

For more info please visit:

Finally, to give the prenuptial agreement as much chance as possible of being upheld, both parties need to show that they have disclosed to each other their current financial positions. This should not be an arduous task, given that if a couple are taking steps to spend the rest of their lives together, then one would assume that a discussion has already been had about financial arrangements and what each other has by way of assets and liabilities. If by disclosing each other’s assets and liabilities there will be gasps of dismay, shock and horror then perhaps questions should be asked as to how well the parties really know each other.

What if we have children?

Clearly when there are children in a relationship, no prenuptial agreement will oust the jurisdiction of the court in determining what is required in order to ensure that the children’s best interests are served at all times. Prenuptial agreements have their limitations, but they do act as a safety net for couples whose marriages do not endure. To put things in perspective, if statistics are to be believed and the average wedding costs £15,000, then a couple agreeing to take steps before the marriage to pay for the preparation of a prenuptial agreement, may find that in the event of the marriage not working, it was the best money they ever spent.

If you would like further advice regarding the preparation of a prenuptial agreement please contact: Juliette Kinsey of Kinsey & Co Solicitors in Baildon on 01274 589900 to make an appointment.

HEAVEN SENT

image

H&N TALKS PERFECT PICTURES WITH HEAVEN SENT PHOTOGRAPHER ROZ SO MUCH OF YOUR WEDDING DAY WILL BE FLEETING - THE CAKE, THE FLOWERS, THE MUSIC, BUT THE PHOTOGRAPHS WILL LIVE ON FOREVER. YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELF (AND YOUR GRANDCHILDREN!) TO DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO MAKE THEM FABULOUS. HERE’S HOW TO NOT ONLY FIND YOUR PERFECT PHOTOGRAPHER, BUT HOW TO WORK WITH THEM... DO YOUR HOMEWORK EARLY About a year before your wedding date, start your search by asking recent couples you know for recommendations and browsing websites and blogs. Look at a few highlight galleries of weddings from each photographer to get a sense of their quality and style. But realise that these are their best clips from multiple weddings, so once you like someone, ask to see a full wedding or two.

Think Critically As you review photos, consider key moments you want to capture at your own wedding: did this photographer get great shots you’d also like?

Set Up a Meeting You can’t always properly vet a photographer by looks alone. Once you have a short list of people whose work you like, and you’ve determined they’re in your price range and are free on your date, set up a meeting. You should feel comfortable with this person because they’ll be shadowing your every move on your wedding day and interacting with all of your guests.

Compare Packages Ask about what’s included in the standard package, plus any additional fees. In particular, find out how many hours of shooting are included. It’s usually better to pay for more coverage if there’s a chance you’ll run over, especially if you’re planning a big finale.

Confirm Your Photographer Larger studios may have more than one photographer on staff. Since every professional has a different style, technique and personality, you need to make sure the photographer you interview and “click” with will be the same one who works your wedding. Also, many photographers include a second shooter in their packages. That way, one can take the formal photos while the other is capturing the informal, more natural shots. You’ll also get to see two unique angles of key moments.

Check References Online reviews are great, and that should be part of your research, but once you’re ready to hire someone, ask to speak to a previous client or two. Ask the couple whether they got the shots they wanted and if they were happy with the service, plus any other specific questions you have.

Sign a Contract Once you’ve chosen your photographer, sign a contract that has everything from the date of the wedding and the hours they’ll cover to postproduction work and how you’ll receive the final product.

opportunity to get comfortable with your photographer and with having your picture taken; you’ll have a builtin save-the-date photo; and you’ll be able to give your feedback on what photos you liked and didn’t before your wedding day.

Make a (Reasonable) Shot List Don’t waste time trying to get every last combo of grandparents, siblings and cousins. Stick to a few important shots, and ask your maid of honour or another member of the wedding party to help orchestrate them on the day. Include whether you want shots in black and white or colour, and don’t forget the photographs you want should be 90% your choice and not that of your family and friends.

Be Realistic with Your Schedule On your wedding day, everything will take longer than you think, from getting your hair done to getting dressed. And mishaps will happen! From misplaced vows to terrible traffic; so set a strict day-of schedule that leaves extra time to deal with them without cutting into your photography session.

Just Enjoy the Day Don’t worry about what might happen, like a relocation of your portrait shoot because of rain or your flower girl melting down during the family shots. Allow your photographer to keep you on schedule, to frame the shots and to know what will look best; remember, that’s why you hired them.

Schedule an Engagement Shoot Once you hire a photographer, a pre-wedding photo shoot kills many birds with one stone: It’s a great

THE BEST MENSWEAR IN TOWN

IS OUT OF TOWN

NOW STOCKING NEW SPRING COLLECTION

In September 2015 a new clothing brand launched at Lambert’s Yard in Leeds. This brand is Ross Barr. It debuted with a single piece of men’s knitwear called The Spencer, which is inspired by the elegance of the Regency Period and is completely 100% made in Britain, from the wool which is spun and dyed in Keighley, to even packaging which comes from Huddersfield, everything is designed by the designer Ross Barr-Hoyland. Ross aged 26, comes from Wakefield and launched the company after receiving full support from The Prince’s Trust as part of their Enterprise Programme. Since then, the brand and Mr. Barr-Hoyland are continuing to go from strength-tostrength. Ross has one main goal and objective for what he wants for the brand; to celebrate and demonstrate the true beauty and quality of the British manufacturing industry via the means of fashion. Ross grew up in the world of business and industry with his father operating a haulage firm in West Yorkshire for over three decades. However, like many industries across the country, he witnessed the dramatic decline of industries over recent decades and what that means to society as a whole. In his local area he has seen the old mills and once industrial power houses become nothing more than crumbling shadows of their former splendour, especially in the wake of our most recent economic crisis. Sadly, this has meant that there is severe lack of opportunity in many areas which has led to degeneration across much of the United Kingdom. Ross Barr though seeks to change this by a revival in their own their way. Inspired by the ethos of The Prince’s Trust, Ross wants the brand to resurrect these old industries, such as woollen, textile and even metalwork in the hope that it will provide hope and opportunity to the areas and people who are crying out for it.

The launch season was incredible for the brand as it not only saw sales come in from across globe, but also saw the world’s biggest male supermodel, Mr. David Gandy, who wore The Spencer for the Campaign for Wool Week held in London on October 4th 2015. With the brand’s amazing imagery and ethos, men and women from across the world bought not only into the style, but the ethos and dream of the brand and that of its founder. One important key principle of Ross’ though is to also give back and help as and when he can. He raised over £2,000 for charity by donating Spencer’s for auction in aid of The Prince’s Trust, Children with Cancer UK, Cancer Support Bradford & Airedale and the RSPCA Bradford Branch. The former two being for the H&N black tie dinner held late last year. In Autumn/Winter 2016, Ross Barr will continue the brands ambitions to resurrect and honour British manufacturing by introducing 5 new lines along with the re-release of the classic Spencer but in new colours. The brands new pieces will still show the beautiful quality of what British wool and British manufacturing can bring but also reinventing old styles by taking further inspiration from the richness of British history and culture. The new pieces will be inspired by the Tudors, 1930’s Britain, the Victorian fishing industry and our early Celitc/Norse roots. The brand is also using and showcasing some of their pieces and the craftsmanship of metalwork from the ‘Steel City’ of Sheffield. Over the last season people have seen the sheer will, determination and passion Ross has, not only for fashion but also for British industry and the country as a whole. For him, the ethos for Ross Barr will be that ‘every stitch and every thread is authentically British’.

PILATES

THE COMPLETE COORDINATION OF MIND, BODY & SPIRIT

MIND-BODY. CORE STRENGTH. CORE STABILITY. YOU’VE HEARD THOSE TERMS BEFORE BUT WHAT ARE THEY? WELL, THEY ARE MUCH MORE THAN THE LATEST FITNESS BUZZWORDS – THEY ARE KEYS TO A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE THROUGH MINDFUL MOVEMENT AND PILATES. PILATES IS AN INNOVATIVE AND SAFE SYSTEM OF MIND-BODY EXERCISE USING A FLOOR MAT OR A VARIETY OF EQUIPMENT. IT EVOLVED FROM THE PRINCIPLES OF JOSEPH PILATES AND CAN DRAMATICALLY TRANSFORM THE WAY YOUR BODY LOOKS, FEELS AND PERFORMS. PILATES BUILDS STRENGTH WITHOUT EXCESS BULK, CAPABLE OF CREATING A SLEEK, TONED BODY WITH SLENDER THIGHS AND A FLAT ABDOMEN. (YEAH, WE KNOW – WHO DOESN’T WANT THAT?) IT IS A SAFE, SENSIBLE EXERCISE SYSTEM THAT WILL HELP YOU LOOK AND FEEL YOUR VERY BEST. IT TEACHES BODY AWARENESS, GOOD POSTURE AND EASY, GRACEFUL MOVEMENT. PILATES ALSO IMPROVES FLEXIBILITY, AGILITY AND ECONOMY OF MOTION. IT CAN EVEN HELP ALLEVIATE BACK PAIN. NO MATTER WHAT YOUR AGE OR CONDITION, IT WILL WORK FOR YOU 20 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

What is pilates?

Pilates aims to strengthen the body in an even way, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing. Pilates exercises are done on a mat or using special equipment, such as the Reformer, the Cadillac and Wunda Chair. With its system of pulleys and springs, handles and straps, the apparatus can provide either resistance or support, depending on your needs. Pilates was developed by German-born Joseph Pilates, who believed mental and physical health were closely connected. His method was influenced by western forms of exercise, including gymnastics, boxing and Greco-Roman wrestling. Pilates immigrated to the US in the 1920s and opened a studio in New York, where he taught his method – which he called contrology – for several decades.

Who is pilates for?

Pilates has something to offer people of all ages and levels of ability and fitness, from beginners to elite athletes. The apparatus can be used to provide support for beginners and people with certain medical conditions, as well as resistance for people looking to challenge their body. Before starting any exercise programme, it’s advisable to seek advice from your GP or a health professional if you have any health concerns, such as a health condition or an injury.

What are the health benefits of pilates?

There are many reports on the health benefits of pilates. However, few of these have been subjected to rigorous scientific examination and there’s a need for more research in this area. Practitioners say regular pilates practise can help improve posture, muscle tone, balance and joint mobility, as well as relieve stress and tension. For elite athletes, including dancers, pilates can complement their training by developing whole body strength and flexibility, and help reduce the risk of injury.

Can pilates help reduce back pain?

There’s some evidence that pilates can provide pain relief to people with non-specific lower back pain. The use of apparatus enables someone with back pain to perform exercises with support. For the exercises to be effective, they need to be tailored to the individual and vetted by an appropriately qualified health professional. Pilates teachers are not medically qualified and cannot prescribe, treat or offer therapy.

Can pilates help me lose weight?

Pilates is classed as a muscle-strengthening activity, which can help you maintain a healthy weight. Classes can vary in intensity: they can be gentle, or dynamic and offer a solid workout. If you want to lose weight, you’re advised to combine pilates with a healthy diet and some aerobic activities, such as swimming, walking and cycling.

Can I injure myself doing pilates?

Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise, so injuries are uncommon. However, it’s important that you find a qualified teacher and a class suited to your level of fitness and ability. Pilates teachers aren’t medically qualified, so if you’re recovering from injury, you are advised to check with your GP or relevant health professional on the suitability of certain exercises or movements before starting a class.

What’s the difference between pilates and yoga?

While the methods are different, pilates and yoga both develop strength, balance, flexibility, posture and good breathing technique. Both systems emphasise the connection between physical and mental health, although yoga places more emphasis on relaxation and uses meditation. Pilates is performed both on apparatus and mats, whereas classic yoga doesn’t require any equipment. Pilates exercises are performed in a flow of movement without the static poses associated with yoga.

What’s the difference between apparatus and mat work?

Joseph Pilates originally devised more than 500 exercises for his system, of which 34 were mat exercises. Mat work may involve traditional pilates equipment such as magic circles or hand weights, as well as nonpilates gear such as stretch bands, gym balls and foam rollers. Pilates with apparatus uses equipment designed by Joseph Pilates, such as the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Spine Corrector and Ladder Barrel. Mat and apparatus pilates can be adapted to suit different levels of fitness and ability. However, if you cannot lie down on a mat for whatever reason, the apparatus can provide alternative ways to exercise. Pilates can be taught on a one-to-one or group basis.

Choosing a pilates class

Pilates can be taught in a dedicated pilates studio with apparatus, or in an open area with mats and small equipment. Both mat and apparatus pilates can be taught privately or in small groups, with most classes lasting 60 minutes. Ideally, apparatus classes should be taught on a one-to-one basis, and around a maximum of 12 for mat work, to ensure personal attention can be provided. Group apparatus classes are popular, but a degree of experience in using the apparatus is advisable before joining a group class. Anyone can call themselves a pilates teacher as there is currently no legal requirement to be registered or have a pilates qualification. There is a nationally recognised level 3 qualification for mat-based pilates teaching, but no qualification for teaching pilates using apparatus. When choosing a pilates teacher, you should consider their experience and the quality of their training, as well as their personality and rapport. Experienced teachers will normally have undergone a minimum of 450 teacher training hours over a period of several months or years.

BRUSH UP BRUSHING YOUR TEETH AT LEAST TWICE A DAY SHOULD BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF YOUR DAY, JUST AS IT’S VITAL YOU EAT. THERE ARE MANY REASONS WHY IT’S IMPORTANT THAT YOU BRUSH YOUR TEETH TWICE A DAY, SOME OF THE REASONS ARE OBVIOUS WHILST OTHERS ARE LESS COMMONLY KNOWN. HERE ARE EIGHT REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD BE BRUSHING YOUR TEETH EVERYDAY: Maintaining a fresh breath: When you don’t brush your teeth regularly, bacteria build up occurs in the mouth which can cause a variety of problems. To prevent bacteria building up, make sure to brush your teeth twice a day as well as chewing sugar free gum after each meal. Prevents gum disease - You are at risk of plaque buildup on the teeth when you don’t brush often. Plaque is an accumulation of bacteria and food that occurs in everyone’s mouth. However, this plaque can lead to Gingivitis, a yellow lining on the base of the tooth that meets the gum. This is often the first stage of gum disease which causes inflammation of the gums and bleeds when you brush them. Removes teeth stains - Toothpaste contains mild abrasives that removes debris and surface stains such as calcium carbonate, aluminium oxides dehydrated silica gels, phosphate salts hydrated and silicates. Reduces your chances of getting a heart attack or stroke The bacteria build-up from your mouth can travel down into the bloodstream, increasing the likelihood of cholesterol build up in the arteries. This can therefore elevate the chances of getting a stroke or heart attack. 24 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

Be kissable - Let’s face it, who wants to kiss someone who has a smelly breath or food in their teeth? Brushing your teeth is the most effective way to get rid of bacteria in your mouth, and remove food. Saves you money - Curing is always more expensive than the prevention, and is usually a lot more hard work! Brushing your teeth twice a day will not only improve the your gum and teeth health, but it will help in preventing problems in the future, ultimately leaving you with reduced dental bills. Have a healthy baby - Gum disease has been shown to increase the chance of premature birth and low birth weight. If you are pregnant, keep in mind that the bacteria build-up from in your mouth from not brushing your teeth can get into the bloodstream of your baby, putting them in risk. It can also be one of the many causes of delayed conception and impotence. Prevent Dementia - Some studies have shown that poor gum health increases in your risk of developing dementia by a 30% to 40%. Those 3 minutes of brushing, twice a day can really save your life and prevent many serious diseases!

Fitness2Glo is not just about losing weight – it’s all about feeling great and I want that for you too! I started running weight management and fitness classes in 2004 as a Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness Instructor. This was a complete career change for me as I was previously a Primary School teacher. However, having battled with my own weight issues for years, I found that by going to a class that offered overall lifestyle advice and a great range of fitness classes made such a difference. I benefited from it so much that I then went on to train to help others too! I love helping people to gain confidence through exercise and the best part of my job is seeing the transformations that takes place. I myself have lost 3 stone by attending a weight loss and exercise class and whole-heartedly believe it is the most effective way of achieving your health and fitness goals.

Caroline’s Top Tips: 1. Find an exercise you love. If it’s not fun how are you going to keep doing it? 2. Find someone you can buddy up with to work out. There’s lots of research to show that people who work out with someone are more likely to keep going. 3. Make sure you set aside a regular time to exercise. Keeping fit and healthy is important. Put the time aside in your diary as if you’re scheduling an important meeting… with yourself! 4. Eat well. To get the most from your exercise programme it’s really important to fuel your body with the correct nutrients. 5. Be kind to yourself. A new exercise programme will take time to become a good habit. 6. Take one day at a time with baby steps and it will soon become part of your new healthy lifestyle.

LOOKING FOR LOVE? Are we living in the the ‘Tinder generation?’ Quite possibly WE TURN TO SCREENS FOR NEARLY EVERY DECISION. WHERE TO EAT. WHERE TO TRAVEL ON HOLIDAY. WHERE TO EAT ON HOLIDAY. WHERE TO GET TREATMENT FOR THE FOOD POISONING YOU GOT AT THAT RESTAURANT WHERE YOU ATE ON HOLIDAY. WHERE TO WRITE A NEGATIVE REVIEW CALLING OUT THE RESTAURANT THAT GAVE YOU FOOD POISONING AND RUINED YOUR HOLIDAY. SO IT’S NO SURPRISE OUR SCREENS ARE BECOMING THE FIRST PLACE WE TURN TO WHEN LOOKING FOR ROMANCE - BECAUSE YOU NEED SOMEONE TO TAKE CARE OF YOU WHEN YOU GET FOOD POISONING ON YOUR HOLIDAY, RIGHT? Once upon a time, online daters were mocked as lonely losers, or worse. Not anymore. Today, millions of us are looking for love on the Web. Online dating services can be a good option if you frequently travel for work or have children or other responsibilities that make going out to meet people difficult. And you can meet people without fear of commitment. Online dating services provide chat rooms that allow you to get to know someone before you exchange photos or phone numbers. 28 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

So, you’d like to meet someone and have decided to go online. That’s a good move, proactive and forward-thinking. Here’s a few little tips that may help create a positive online experience.... Be ready to date - If you’re not over previous relationships or feel anxious about going online you may self sabotage. Make sure you are emotionally available before putting yourself out there. Decide what you want first - The site - or introduction service you use, your profile and photo all need to be chosen to suit the partner and partnership you are looking for Ignore the numbers - No site or introduction service , no matter how huge their database, will bring you results if the site users aren’t your kind of people. Check you are using a service appropriate to your life, age and circumstances. Tell the truth - Most folk using introduction services are genuinely looking for love, if not they will go to different types of sites. Many people are quite insecure and so tweak age and height or weight to make a good impression. Try to feel comfortable in your own skin, this is far more attractive to others.

Choose a welcoming photo - Smile! Pouting selfies are not the way forward, a warm and honest photograph will go a long way in first impressions. Don’t sell, invite - Writing your profile shouldn’t be a marketing exercise. Research shows that the more you concentrate on ’I’, the more you’ll actively put people off. Don’t go shopping - Studies show that when faced with too much choice in potential partners we make decisions on irrelevant criteria, such as whether someone wears glasses. Dont expect instant success - In everyday life you may meet hundreds of people at work, socially or by chance before you find someone to date - the same applies here Get Real! - Don’t fall under the email and text spell. Feeling close online says nothing about whether you are compatible in real life - don’t get Catfished! Get support - Find a dating buddy, someone to help you through the tricky stages, support you through disappointment and celebrate your success!

THE WISH LIST Check out our dream destinations for a far flung honeymoon

SOUTHERN GRAND TOUR

Without wishing to make light of marriage, one of the best parts of planning a wedding is deciding where to go on honeymoon. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to push back the boundaries and go somewhere you would never consider for your annual holiday. It might be a far-flung destination, which will require a lengthy time away from home, or it might simply be somewhere nearer to home that would normally be beyond your holiday price bracket, check out some of our suggestions... Couples in search of an adventure of epic proportions will love Last Frontiers’ ‘Southern Grand Tour’ of Chile and Argentina, an all-terrain 17-day exploration of South America’s wild heart. This trip starts with three days in Argentina’s vibrant capital Buenos Aires, staying at the boutique Hub Porteño hotel in the buzzing Recoleta district, where there will be time to explore the passionate city as well as attend a seductive tango show with dinner as VIP guests. Then it’s on to Ushuaia, the most southerly city in the world, to board an intimate cruise ship for a three-night journey taking in dramatic fjords and magnificent glaciers en route to Chile and the Torres del Paine national park. Here, home will be the romantic Tierra Patagonia hotel, a style-lovers’ dream boasting sleek rooms, spa and breathtaking vistas towards the park’s incredible granite towers, glaciers and ice fields. The last leg of the journey includes a visit to the Chilean Lake District, before heading to Argentine Patagonia to explore its traditional Andean towns and picturesque landscapes by car. Prices start from £7,860 per person and include international flights, transfers, private excursions, breakfasts and tours where stated. Book through www. lastfrontiers.com or call 01296 653000. 30 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

LEEU HOUSE

If South America seems like too much of an adventure (and you are also on the hunt for something a little more affordable), but would still like to visit the other side of the world, there is always New Zealand. Discover the World has put together a threeweek ‘Honeymoon Heaven’ self-drive, combining thrilling adventure with romantic bush hideaways whilst exploring New Zealand's magnificent landscapes - from tranquil golden beaches to dramatic fjords. This 20-day trip is available from £2,768 per person including a variety of accommodation on a full-board basis, 19-day vehicle rental, private airport transfers, an inter-island ferry journey in a premium plus cabin and all excursions, but it excludes international flights. For more information, visit www.discover-the-world.co.uk or call 01737 214 291. South Africa is another far-flung option, but it has the added bonus of not giving travellers jetlag due to the fact that it is only one or two hours ahead, depending on the time of year. With the current weakness of the Rand, it is also a very affordable destination. Like South America and New Zealand, it is particularly worth considering if you are planning a winter wedding and want to escape the harsh British weather in search of sun in the southern hemisphere. Stay in the romantic village of Franschhoek in the Cape Winelands, just under an hour’s drive from Cape Town, enabling guests to make day trips to the city, as well as to the stunning beaches on the coast or to the vineyards of Stellenbosch and the Swartland to sample delicious wines and great food. The latest hotels in Franschhoek are 12-bed Leeu House, which opened in December 2015, and Leeu Estates, due to open in June 2016 with just 21 rooms; both offer outstanding levels of comfort and luxury, with prices at Leeu House staring from around £160, with lots of extras included, such as a wine tasting of the awardwinning Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines. Visit www.leeucollection.com for more information and to book. Asia is always popular with honeymooners, but make sure you escape the crowds for a quieter, more romantic experience, and go somewhere a little off the heavily beaten track. Somewhere like Cambodia, Bhutan or Sri Lanka.Phum Baitang in Cambodia’s Siem Reap is more than just a hotel: it's a serious commitment to tranquillity, which is just what the doctor orders after the stress of organising a wedding, and it’s unique. Newly opened in September 2015, it is spread over 8 acres and recreates

Doubles at Paro start from £312 per room, per night on a half-board basis, while doubles at Punakha start from £382 per room, per night half-board. The huts overlook a beach where seaturtles come to lay eggs by moonlight and elephants wander down from the nearby jungle to play in the surf – what could be more romantic? Chena Huts also offer a fabulous Sri Lankan safari experience, with a game drive each day during which guests are likely to see leopards, wild boars, tropical birds and much more. Each cabin offers spacious accommodation with earthy interiors where oversized beds take centre stage; there’s also private decking complete with a plunge pool, the ideal place from which to observe the stunning natural surroundings.

NZ PURE PODS

Spring is the ideal time to go, as it avoids the Monsoon season. Prices start from £650 per cabin per night – to book, call +94 11 2331 322 or visit www.ugaescapes.com/chenahuts. Closer to home, Europe is a popular honeymoon destination after a summer wedding and offers a wide range of accommodation of all shapes, sizes and prices, with many boutique hotels in historic properties providing great value for money. CAPE VERDE The African Caribbean? It just may well be....

Mention Cape Verde to the man on the street, and it’s likely you’ll get a blank look in response. These islands, about 400 miles off the coast of Senegal, have only recently emerged from obscurity. But, in certain circles, they’re creating a real stir. Floating 500 kilometres off the coast of Senegal, the Atlantic isles of Cape Verde have been dubbed the African Caribbean. They’re still fairly new to the travel circuit, but with their out-of-this-world beaches and lively surf, they’re quickly making a name for themselves. Here’s a snap shot of where to go and what to do on your holiday. The Island of Sal Cape Verde’s most popular island is cosmopolitan Sal, which is known for its striking, lunar-like landscape. It’s dotted with colourful, cobbled towns, like Santa Maria on the southern shores, where you’ll find surf shops, traditional restaurants and a pretty square lined with al fresco cafés. The main attraction, though, is the beach, which stretches along the coast for 8 kilometres. Sal is part of Cape Verde, a group of 10 islands off the 32 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

west coast of Africa. They’re relatively unknown in the mainstream market and, thanks to their location, they’re a unique melting pot of cultures. The islands were originally discovered by the Portuguese, and there’s a mixture of African, Brazilian and Portuguese influences. You’ll see it in the islands’ music, fashions and, perhaps most clearly, the food.

The Island of Boa Vista You’ll find plenty more in the way of beaches over on Boa Vista, which translates as ‘beautiful view’. The sands here halo the coastline for 55 kilometres and easily rival those you’d find in the Caribbean. Praia Chave deserves a special mention, thanks to its snow-white swathes and shapeshifting dunes. The 10 isles, one of which is Boa Vista, are commonly referred to as the African Caribbean, and they’re home to the best beaches this side of the Atlantic.

The Island of Santiago The biggest island of Cape Verde! With its capital of Praia in the southeast, Santiago has had a strong influence on the history of the archipelago. More than half of the Cape Verdeans now live on this island. With an area of 990 kilometres, Santiago is probably the most diverse island in terms of its landscape. You can find fine sandy beaches, mighty mountains and dry steppe areas, as well as fertile valleys and plateaus.

Cultural melting pot Whichever island you opt for, expect a melting pot of cultures. The Portuguese originally discovered Cape Verde, so there’s a mixture of African, Brazilian and Portuguese influences. You’ll see it in the island’s music, fashion and – perhaps most clearly – the food. The cuisine on Cape

Verde can be called as relatively hearty. There is no doubt that the national dish of the islands is the cachupa. This is a type of stew, consisting of mashed maize, onions, green bananas, manioc, sweet potatoes, squash, yams, tomatoes, cabbage and possibly bacon. The Cape Verdeans enjoy their favourite meal at almost any time of the day: for breakfast, as well as lunch or dinner. Many little restaurants that usually serve an excellent cachupa cannot even be recognised as such from the outside. So ask to have a restaurant recommended to you.

Things to do in Cape Verde Sea Turtle Catamaran - Sit back and soak up the sun on this three-hour catamaran cruise. After boarding your luxury ‘Sea Turtle’ cat at Palmeira, you’ll set sail over the waters along Sal’s southwest coast. Stretch out on one of the eight nets and catch the rays as the sea breezes wash over you. Sip on beers or soft drinks from the complimentary bar as you admire the views over Sal’s desert-like shores. And keep your camera handy as you drift by Monte Leao, a huge rocky promontory resembling a sleeping lion. Later, you’ll drop anchor in the beautiful bay of Murdeira, a place full of sandy coves and turquoise waters. Jump in for a quick swim or stay on deck - it’s up to you. Then it’s time to sail back to port, enjoying more of the warm sunshine and ocean views. A fabulous chance to chill out and see Sal from a whole new perspective. Trek up mountains on Sao Nicolau - An easy plane hop away, this island is the one to visit for mountains. Monte Gordo is its highest point at 1,312 metres tall. Wind your way up its green valley, past tropical plantations, and you’ve got no end of trails to hike. Afterwards, head for the pretty capital, Ribeira Brava, for some top-notch restaurants in a colonial setting.

Keep a look out for Turtles and Whales - If you’ve got a getaway planned in spring or early summer, keep your eyes on Boa Vista’s horizon. Giant humpback whales – who come here to breed – can often be seen slapping their tails on the waves. And between June and September, you can spot loggerhead turtles on Ervatao Beach. Sink in to the saltpans at Pedra de Lume - Sal, which means salt in Portuguese, used to be famous for just that. The salt mines have long gone – you’ll pass a rickety abandoned one on the way there – but the saltpans remain, and they’re great for bathing in. Because of the incredible buoyancy, you’ll float on the surface. Afterwards, head to the little café, wash off the salt, and sit back with an ice-cold drink and watch the world go by. Try watersports on Santa Monica Beach - If you fancy kite-surfing or windsurfing, you’ll find lessons at the Riu Touareg Hotel on the beach. They run diving courses here too, and there are plenty of wrecks and reefs to explore off the coast. Down here you’ll see everything from whales and dolphins to octopus and multi-coloured parrotfish. Big-game fishing is really popular here too. In terms of their geography, the islands belong to the Macaronesian group with Madeira, the Canary Islands and the Azores due to their similar vegetation. Macaronesia is translated as the “Islands of Bliss“... Yes, Cape Verdeans are right to be proud of their islands, life is simple in the best possible way, the climate is perfect and the scenery is stunning. This is, for the most part, a special and unspoilt destination. hnmagazine.co.uk | 33

STAYCATION? Our pick of the best UK honeymoon destinations

There is no place like home, so perhaps we should not be surprised that more and more couples are opting for a staycation honeymoon here in Britain. After months of organising a wedding, all some people want to do is get to a fancy hotel as fast as possible, climb into a fluffy robe and order room service with a bottle of Champagne! Price is also a consideration. If you’ve blown the budget on your wedding reception, sometimes there are only enough pennies left in the pot for a low-key home honeymoon… And Britain now has a wide range of great hotels (which probably wasn’t the case historically), so why not stay put? Lime Wood is a great example. One of the most sought after country house hotels in the UK, it is tucked away in one of the prettiest parts of the country. The New Forest is perfect for long romantic walks à deux, followed by hours of relaxation in The Herb House Spa with its eight treatment rooms, swimming pool, hydro-therapy pool and roof-top yoga sessions – the perfect antidote to the stresses of the last few months preparing for “the big day”. Then, in the evening, there’s great cooking to be enjoyed, as Lime Wood has the most successful female chef in the UK at the helm of its restaurant, Angela Hartnett; she creates food that isn’t stuffy or snobby, think fun rather than fine dining. Room rates start from £315 per night, but visit the website www.limewoodhotel.co.uk for more details and keep an eye out for special offers. 34 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

The Cotswolds are another stunning part of the country and there are plenty of gorgeous hotels there that would make a great honeymoon staycation, many of which are well away from prying eyes on private estates: think Soho Farmhouse and Cowley Manor. A personal favourite is Dormy House, near Broadway, which is one of the prettiest villages in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Set on the edge of the 400-acre Farncombe Estate, Dormy House oozes boutique style and comfort in a peaceful, rural location. The restored 17th-century farmhouse is decorated in a quintessentially English style, with a hint of Scandi influence thanks to its Danish owners - think wooden floorboards, whitewashed stone walls and splashes of colourful artwork tempered with open fireplaces, Jacobean panelling and fabriccushioned walls. There are opportunities to walk around vast gardens (landscaped by a Chelsea gold medallist) and visit the award-winning sumptuous spa - complete with its lavender infused sauna, hot juniper Finnish cabin and outdoor hot tub, not to mention plenty of relaxing treatments. At the end of the day, snuggle up in front of a roaring log fire, if there’s a chill in the air, followed by a romantic dinner in the airy Garden Room restaurant or The Potting Shed, if you are after something more hearty. Prices start from £250 per room per night in an Intimate Room on a B&B basis. Book through i-escape (www.iescape.com) and a half-bottle of Champange comes free, perfect for getting your honeymoon off to a great start! If you want to get married in the Cotswolds and then stay on for a honeymoon, the Manor House Hotel is Moreton in Marsh is very popular, as it has a sizeable and very pretty walled garden, which provides the perfect backdrop for photos and is a great place for guests to mingle over drinks, before a sit-down reception. Afterwards, the happy couple can retire to their very own Apple Cottage at the end of the garden, which is cosy and private while still benefiting from all the facilities of the hotel. This little retreat has

its own garden and terrace for alfresco dining, deck chairs for relaxing and a hot tub for unwinding. The sumptuous bathroom has a free-standing bath! Rooms in the hotel start from just £99 on a B&B basis, with Apple Cottage costing from £270 per night. Sister property The Swan is located beside a picturesque gentle-flowing river in Bibury. Recognised as one of the prettiest villages in the Cotswolds, pictures of Bibury’s Arlington Row regularly adorn calendars and postcards. With less grounds than the Manor House Hotel, we would recommend it for a quiet, secluded honeymoon rather than a wedding venue, as it will allow couples to really step away from their every day routine and really focus on each other. B&B rates start from £99 for a double room, from £159 for a four-poster room and from £219 for a private cottage. For those, however, who feel they really need to have some kind of stimulation while on honeymoon, then The Close in the pretty market town of Tetbury is a good choice. There are plenty of antique shops and independent boutiques to browse in this historic settlement, while the surrounding area throws up lots of surprises: such as the opportunity to explore the Prince of Wales’s garden at Highgrove and the national arboretum at Westonbirt, with its newly-created treetop walk, that hosts top pop acts in a series of summer concerts. Room rates start from £110 on a B&B basis. For more information on the Manor House Hotel, The Swan and The Close, visit www.cotswold-inns-hotels.co.uk. If you cannot imagine a honeymoon without being by the sea, have no fear, you can still stay home! Beachspoke offers a carefully curated collection of cottages most of which are on the Cornish coast and are bijou one-bedroom properties – ideal for a romantic escape. For example, Black Moon in St Ives is a perfectly-formed private property that takes the word decadent to the extreme. The living room houses a spectacular glass floor, meaning you can

see into your own private cave, as well as huge floor to ceiling glass doors, which give stunning views out onto St Ives Bay, towards Gwithian lighthouse. The ocean is so close that at high tide it can be found crashing against the side of the house itself – what could be more romantic than snuggling up together, safe from the elements? Or watching the sunset or sunrise over the sea from the custom made king size bed? Prices start from £200 per night for Black Moon, but other properties are less expensive. Visit www.beachspoke. com/properties/black-moon/ for more details. One final suggestion that would work well for those who want to spend a day or two or three simply relaxing in this country, fully absorbing every minute of the excitement of the wedding day before heading out to an exotic honeymoon destination elsewhere in the world, is The Dorchester Collection’s Coworth Park, which is just a 15-minute drive to London Heathrow. Luxury country house hotel Coworth Park is located in 240 acres of picturesque parkland bordering Windsor Great Park, thereby offering a complete retreat from the outside world. The hotel has a special ‘Celebrate’ package that includes luxury accommodation, two glasses of Champagne in The Bar, a bouquet of flowers in the room on arrival and delicious English breakfast. Room rates start from £355, visit the website for more information and to book - www.dorchestercollection.com/Coworth. While it might not be for everyone, I have to say, as a travel writer, I am frequently asked where I would recommend for a honeymoon and I’ve always been firmly of the opinion that I would rather travel less distance and splash out more on a hotel than costs over and above what I would normally choose for my annual holiday. Each to their own, but it works for me!

H&N TALKS TO WEST END FAVOURITE DAMIEN POOLE ABOUT HIS COLLABORATION WITH ONE OF YORKSHIRE’S LEADING PERFORMING ARTS SCHOOLS Damien Poole grew up in Clayton Heights, a leafy village on the hills between Halifax and Bradford, before moving to London at 21 to train at Arts Educational School of Musical Theatre. He began dancing at 2, and joined his brothers and sister ballroom dancing. Damien’s grandfather was a tap dancer; his sister LeeAnn is a competent ballroom dancer his brother Wayne played the child role of Kansas in the UK touring production of Gypsy starring Ruth Madoc. His other brother, Dominic, had a part in the film ‘How We Used to Live’ and mum Jay worked at the Dominion Theatre and the Astoria when she was young and often took roles in local amateur productions. Another family member was an original Bluebell girl. A very theatrical family! After debating whether to pursue a career in the Arts after his GCSE’s, Damien completed a BTEC in Musical Theatre, led by Gordon Wilson and Deana Morgan who helped pave the way for him to consider and achieve a place at drama school. Damien left drama school four months early and after attending five gruelling auditions for Arlene Philips, he got his first West End role in ‘Grease’ the musical at the Piccadilly Theatre, still achieving his degree. He understudied and played Kenickie, Roger and Teen Angel, and eventually became the Alternate Teen Angel in his second contract, he continued understudying the ‘stars’ and ‘celebrities’ playing this iconic role week in, week out. After two years at Rydell High, and eight auditions later, he got the opportunity to create the role of the Mad Hatter in the original West End cast of Shrek at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Damien performed on ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ before Simon Cowell and sang Christmas songs on ‘This Morning’ as one of the three pigs in a very hot fat suit! During the last few weeks of performing in Shrek in the evening, Damien was workshopping and rehearsing with choreographer Peter Darling for the brand new musical, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ during the day. After 13 auditions in front of a panel of ‘Billy Elliot’ and ‘Matilda’ including choreographer Peter Darling, ‘Hairspray’ writers Marc Shaiman and Scott Whittman and ‘Skyfall Director Sam Mendes, he was asked to join the company, and performed in the premiere production, as an original world cast member of the show.

Despite his busy professional schedule, Damien finds time to teach at dance and theatre schools across the UK and the Netherlands, teaching classes in Jazz, Ballet, Tap, Audition Technique, Contemporary and Commercial Street Dance and loves to work with children. This year is an exciting time for Damien. His association with Deana Morgan Academy in Shipley, Bradford has been solidified with a sister business in the shape of a theatrical casting agency; ‘DMA Casting’, for children aged between 6 and 18. The agency gives children opportunities to audition for musicals, film and TV and the confidence to pursue a career in the arts by constantly having access to high quality training. DMA Casting boasts of unique theatre and film workshops, led only by professionals working in theatre, film and TV or casting. Damien told us, “We have a database and connections to West End directors, choreographers, musical directors, performers, actors, casting directors and other agents who are currently working in the arts and can assist in paving the way for well-rounded triple threat performers. Our last workshop was led by Chitty Chitty Bang Bang audition panellist and Gypsy’s resident choreographer, Jane McMurtrie. Our February workshop is led by Emmerdale actress, Amy Walsh and West End Les Miserable star, Bradley Jaden, teaching TV and musical theatre, acting and performance. March’s workshop is very special. Casting Director, Jo Hawes who casts children in most major musicals, such as Billy Elliot, Matilda, Gypsy and Miss Saigon, as well as plays and TV musicals, is coming to DMA Casting for a one off private workshop session, concentrating on audition technique. “I couldn’t be more thrilled that my further involvement with DM Academy has been officially announced. My dance and theatrical roots were nurtured and evolved by Deana Morgan at D M Academy and my style and technique continues to mirror that of DMA’s high standards in dance. I intend to keep these standards high and nurture every student at D M Academy the way I have been. D M A has always been close to my heart and on my visits year after year, I have found a family dedicated to creating new talent, whilst ensuring laughter and happiness can be heard from every corner of the studios. This venture is hugely exciting as we are offering more opportunity at D M A for students to follow their own paths to successful careers in the Arts.”

Rugby success at the Grove… DESPITE THE DEVASTATING FLOODING TO OUR RUGBY PITCHES OVER CHRISTMAS, 2016 HAS BEEN AN INCREDIBLY BUSY AND SUCCESSFUL TIME FOR RUGBY AT THE GROVE; WITH BOTH TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL SUCCESS STORIES. On an individual level Ellie Kildunne (Y11) has been selected to play rugby for North England U18’s group following trials earlier in the month, this is the second year running that Ellie has played at this level. The boys have also gained representative success with Edward Linkogel, Louis Fraser, Alfred Nordgren and Mason Knowles being selected for the England Independent Schools Lambs squad. They will play a series of matches against representative teams leading up to a tour of Argentina. Unfortunately, the 1st XV bowed out of the Natwest Schools Cup at the last 16 stage on Wednesday. Hampered by illness and injury, the team struggled against a very physical Wilmslow High School team and lost 5-29. However, well done to all involved as 38 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

this Cup run and the excellent 6th place finish in the Daily Mail Trophy means it has been a successful season. The focus now shifts to Sevens. The U15 team defeated QEGS 11-7 to progress to the Quarter Final of the Natwest Schools Cup. After the draw which was live on EnglandRugby.com, the Grove will play away against Millfield School on Wednesday 10th February. Good luck to the boys in this big match! The U13’s team have got through to the last 4 in the National Cup and their semi-final match will be played on Thursday 11th February at home against Warwick School. The game will kick-off at 14:15. This is a fantastic achievement already for these boys and all support for the team on the day will be much appreciated. Woodhouse Grove Rugby has also been nominated for an award at the Inaugural Bradford Sports Awards to be held on 25th February. The school’s rugby success is nominated in the Active Achievers section for Student Sport. Sport at the school continues to go from strength to strength, with success for the girls along with the boys. The U13’s Netball team have also reached the Netball National Finals which will be held in Brighton in March. So despite the wet start to the year things are definitely looking brighter at the Grove.

H & N A R T S & E D U C AT I O N

IS THE ANSWER IN

THE ARTS? PROVEN WAYS TO BOOST YOUR CHILD’S CONFIDENCE As parents, you do everything to help your child navigate through the ups and downs of childhood and survive with self-esteem. You praise their every accomplishment. “You tied your shoe!” “You finished that book!” “You made your bed!” You encourage them to make friends with other children who support them and have similar interests. You probably even sign them up for after-school activities to keep them physically active. You might register your child for music or dance lessons and listen to endless recitations of their part in the school’s play. And all of this is great, essential, even. But did you know that activities, especially artsrelated activities, are important for so much more than just keeping your child busy? They’ve been proven to boost a child’s self-image. Whether in an individual setting or as part of a group, arts education improves a child’s confidence. For example, studies have shown that when children participate in art activities with peers, the feedback they give to each other builds self-respect by helping them learn to accept criticism and praise from others. And that’s not the only way it can improve self-esteem. Here are some other ways the arts help your child on the road to a better sense of self:

40 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

The arts instill pride. When your child puts their heart and soul into an art project—and spends hours working on it, cultivating it, and making it beautiful—they feel an enormous sense of accomplishment when it’s complete. The arts are a great leveller, as we are all in the same boat, learning to create and succeed in new and unexpected ways. Children not only become appreciators of each other’s work, but also develop skills of self-reflection in the effort to create their own vision. The arts help your child develop real-life skills. Depending on the specific arts activity your child chooses to become involved in—whether it’s music, drawing, acting, or dance—they are sure to learn important real-life skills including critical and creative thinking, hand-eye coordination, motor skills, and social skills like taking turns, sharing, and negotiating. Students make a personal connection to a subject through the arts, and as a result, they deepen their thinking through a creative response. Students learn persistence and a higher level of thinking and concentration through creative problem solving. The arts lead to higher test scores in the classroom. Self-esteem increases when a child feels confident in the classroom. Skills learned from studying the arts including concentration and dedication, affects classroom values and test scores. Studies have found that the arts are vital to providing a well-rounded education for children. Students

who were highly involved with the arts, frequently outperformed less-involved peers. Music, in particular, helps provide children with improved classroom skills, including critical thinking, creative problem solving, team work, and effective communication. The arts increase opportunities for self-expression. Another benefit of arts education is giving children a way to express themselves, especially in a classroom setting. When students are working towards a common goal, they appreciate that their “voice” and interests are heard and understood by others. This joint effort creates a sense of secure acceptance that is critical to their self-esteem. The arts increase an individual’s sense of belonging or attachment to a community. Community art programmes help introduce your child to new people and experiences. This attachment encourages your child to engage in social and creative activities while feeling part of a larger community. Your child will learn about trust and develop interpersonal skills and friendships. Arts-related studies show, no matter the art, is critical to building a child’s self-esteem—whether in a studio, classroom or playground. Speak with your child. Learn more about their creative interests and provide the resources and opportunities for them to grow and thrive.

CLOSING THE FLOODGATES! H&N TALKS TO LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS ADRIAN & SANGITA LEE

THE RECENT FLOODS HIT THE BUSINESS OF LOCAL MAN AND WIFE TEAM ADRIAN AND SANGITA LEE OF UNITED CARPETS, WOODFLOORS AND BEDS IN SHIPLEY PARTICULARLY HARD WITH THE RIVER AIRE BURSTING ITS BANKS AND POURING INTO THE STORE LIKE A TSUNAMI. THE WATER LEVEL INSIDE WAS 6 FEET DEEP AND ALONG WITH THE SILT, MUD AND RUBBISH THAT RAGED IN, THOUSANDS OF POUNDS’ WORTH OF STOCK WAS COMPLETELY RUINED AND THE BUILDING WAS LEFT DEVASTATED. CHRISTMAS WAS COMPLETELY RUINED FOR ADRIAN AND SANGITA AND THEIR TWELVE MEMBERS OF STAFF WHO HAVE BEEN LEFT OUT OF WORK AT ONE OF THE BUSIEST TIMES OF THE YEAR, COMPLETELY MISSING THE BOXING DAY AND NEW YEAR SALES THAT ACCOUNT FOR MUCH OF THE YEAR’S TURNOVER AND STAFF BONUSES. Carpets, specialist flooring, beds and mattresses had to be thrown away, along with everything else necessary for the business, such as computers and all paper products, even uniforms. The cleanup operation has been lengthy and extensive, leaving an empty smelly and very dirty shell where a thriving local business once stood which employed local people, family and friends. However, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the building has been professionally cleaned and sanitized and is undergoing a brand new refit that will bring the store flying into the 21st century with a dazzling new interior ready for the eagerly awaited re-opening launch event at the end of February. Adrian and Sangita have said that without the help of their team of staff who include Nigel White, Chris White, Josh Sykes, Derek Summers, Luke Hodgson, Paul Sykes and Yassa Majid; they could not have recovered so quickly. The team were eager to help where they could and willingly assisted with the clear out and clean-up process straight away. 42 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

WEDDING GIFT IDEA

FABULOUS FLORALS H & N talks to Helena Arenson at Maytree Public Relations, PR specialists in soft furnishings and interiors, about spring trends.

The latest fabric collection from KAI inspires thoughts of spring with beautiful painterly designs. AKINA is inspired by sophisticated Scandinavian design, an eclectic collection of embroideries and jacquards that portray a modern twist on this popular theme. The embroideries are full of personality and movement with a painterly hand, while the distressed check and voile complement these designs in soft coordinating shades. The digitally printed jacquard LINNEA adds colour and texture to this range and alongside COLE, is a stunning option for upholstery. The colour palette includes 5 contrasting shades, namely Lagoon, Orchid, Quartz, Marine and Coral. Featuring traditional hand painted florals, lustrous woven fabrics, delicate embroideries and textured satins, the Spring 2016 Collection by Ashley Wilde has something to suit all interiors, whether classic or contemporary. These exquisite designs are available in a beautiful colour palette, creating a unique look for every home. Take a look at Hampton Court, Coniston, Linus and Grayson - we love them all.

Move upstairs to the bedroom and you will see how the trend continues. These beautiful florals by Ted Baker are simply stunning. Delicate wisteria, vibrant orchids and fresh green leaves flow down this beautiful Hanging Gardens bed linen. In a palette of soft purples, zingy yellows and vibrant pinks, the fresh design works beautifully on crisp white cotton sateen. Inspired by oil paintings, its brushstrokes create a soft, dreamy look that’ll soothe you to sleep. For a final flourish, add the luxurious 100% Alpaca Arlo throw, the sparkling Disco cushion or the sumptuous faux-fur Aubrey cushion. Effortlessly elegant, Ted’s Flight of the Orient bed linen will transport you to a far-flung paradise. Sparkle adorned blossoms fall among bejeweled birds on this pretty print; drift off in a dreamy palette of soft blues and pale pinks alongside zesty yellow and vibrant fuchsia. Team with Ted’s rose-gold Jet and embellished Disco cushions for added sparkle, while the sumptuously soft Aubrey cushion ensures a finishing touch of luxury. Make an impact in your home with Ted’s dazzling Cosmic bed linen, adorned with painterly blooms and touches of deep purples, vibrant fuchsia and soft peach. The soft ombre of falling blooms on sumptuous cotton sateen ensures your bed is always a haven.

HANGING GARDENS BY TED BAKER

AKINA COLLECTION BY KAI

HELLEBORE BY EMMA BRIDGEWATER

Throw on Ted’s Jet and Disco cushions for a touch of glamour, while the Arlo and Pierre throws add a final air of elegance. Emma Bridgewater likes to create things that make life a little bit nicer – and thinks a beautifully made up bed is one of those simple pleasures that do just that. The pure cotton bed linen will make your bed so irresistible that you can’t wait to get into it. One of the new designs is Hellebore; a rich pink and purple floral that brings flamboyance to the design based on the Hellebore pattern and inspired by Emma’s memories of shopping in Kensington Market in the 1970s - searching for deep-dyed tee shirts and velvet flares, in a haze of joss sticks and patchouli. Drift off to sleep and dream of rock stars… With an established reputation as the queen of lingerie, the JANET REGER bed linen is a natural extension, carrying through features that epitomize the very essence of femininity. The collection combines designs that evoke a sense of romance. So introduce these delightful florals into your bedroom for a perfect ‘Spring time’ look. MARCIA is a truly feminine design with an abundance of pretty pink roses that flow across duvet and pillowcases, enhanced with a ruffled edge. ELIZABETH brings the look of meadow flowers into your home with botanical style florals and its ditsy floral reverse, all set on a warm cream ground. Finished with a piped pink edge, this bedding embraces the essence of an English garden. In shades of peachy pastels with a warm soft shell reverse, ROSALIND is an elegant trailing floral with damask detail creates a gentle tranquil look for your bedroom.

PHOTOGRAPHY - GEORGE HARRISON, BLACK SWAN

PREVIEW

T 0113 827 2349 37 Call Lane, Leeds www.blackswanleeds.co.uk

THE BLACK SWAN AT CALL LANE LAUNCHES IT'S BISTRO MENU.... At one time Call Lane was ‘the’ place to be in Leeds, but with a great new bar or eatery opening on what feels like every corner you turn, is it’s crown starting to slip? Well some old favourites might have caught wind and are beginning to fight back, the latest being the Black Swan with the introduction of their new bistro fayre. Yes that’s right, we said the ‘Black Swan’ and we said ‘bistro’. Now you’re probably more familiar with their traditional stone baked pizza’s or hearty pub grub favourites like fish and chips, but after the launch of a new menu this month they are threatening to bring a much more sophisticated offering to the table. Infact so impressed are some, that they have been shortlisted in the ‘Best of British’ category in the upcoming Oliver awards. H&N were invited to the menu launch to check out what all the fuss is about. Still the same relaxed ambience in the downstairs bar; comfy leather sofas, soft lighting and a steady playlist of good old rock ‘n roll. There’s no need to fix what isn’t broken, and if you are a Black Swan stalwart you’ll be relieved to know it’s still somewhere that you can get your fix of cheesy, sourdough goodness. However, it’s upstairs to the first floor restaurant and terrace where you’ll find the new menu concept. The relaxed decor and vibe is carried through from the bar, but turned down a notch. We sit at the rustic wooden tables surroundedby exposed brick work and it feels cosy and intimate. Unsure of what to expect, we were wowed when the starters arrived. There is a great choice for every palate. The salmon and crab scotch egg with pickled cucumber and parsley emulsion went down particularly well on our table; a perfect example of the ‘fine British food meets Yorkshire grub’ on offer. The ‘duck oxo cube’ with celeriac veloute, celeriac and apple salad was also a winner. I can honestly say I’ve never tasted better duck; it packed a powerful taste punch with a texture that melted in the mouth. My only criticism was that it left me wanting more! The kitchen prides itself on all ingredients being locally sourced, fresh and seasonal. This was clearly evident when the mains came out. The 24 hour lamb rump with

chargrilled purple sprouting broccoli, caramelised shallot and mint jus was the tastiest dish on offer. It was cooked to pink perfection and the lamb breast that came with it was interesting in a surprisingly pleasant way. The natural fat in the breast cut (akin to belly pork) added a flavour and texture not too dissimilar to bone marrow. Definitely one to try if you are a big meat eater like myself. Another favourite was the pan fried seabass with butternut squash puree, roasted squash and baby leek. The extra crisp skin was a real treat, however I’m not so sure the accompanying mushroom filled pasta was really necessary; a little overbearing alongside something so light and fresh. Finally the dessert course, and what a course that was! The best dish of the night came in the form of a spiced rum poached pineapple with a raspberry and sorrel sorbet. I can not praise this highly enough. The spicy kick from the chilli and rum balanced perfectly with the sweetness of the pineapple and sorbet creating a long sugary warmth that was to savour. Good things could be said for the stewed rhubarb and ginger creme brulee, dark chocolate tart and northern bloc ice cream (so called for it’s added bourbon vanilla), but I’m not going to because the poached pineapple blew them out of the water. It is the must try on the dessert menu! Oliver Edwards, Yorkshireman born and bred and head chef of 8 months is doing a superb job in his kitchen. I must admit that before being seated I had wondered how a fine dining experience would work at the Black Swan and how they were going to pull it off. Surely people aren’t going to come here for a 3 course sit down meal? Their success however lies in the clever and honest menu. It’s the unpretentious Yorkshire twist on these great British classics that keeps the menu grounded. With mains starting at £10.95 and offers such as 3 courses for £15.95 on selected dishes, it’s a steal too! The Black Swan have just raised their game, so it’s high time one of your old favourites is rediscovered. Written by Lorraine Pitman, February 2016 hnmagazine.co.uk | 55

GETTING YOUR JUST

DESSERTS DOES STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING MAKE YOUR HEART SKIP A BEAT? ARE RED VELVET CUPCAKES TOPPED WITH BUTTERCREAM YOUR BIGGEST VICE? DESPITE EVERYTHING YOU MAY HAVE HEARD, YOUR PROFOUND LOVE AND APPRECIATION FOR DESSERTS CAN ACTUALLY BENEFIT YOUR HEALTH. WHY NOT HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT TOO (LITERALLY) WITH THESE FIVE EXCELLENT REASONS TO INDULGE TODAY? 1. Desserts are packed with nutrients. There’s a reason why your body craves certain delicious desserts. Low carb diets often overlook the fact that carbohydrates are an essential nutrient for the body. While desserts may not be the healthiest form of carbohydrates, the right indulgences can fuel your body and mind.

chemicals (such as serotonin) that contribute to overall emotional well-being. Indulging in your favorite dessert alters your mind and body in positive ways. Take full advantage of this scientific process by allowing yourself to enjoy your favorite sweet treat without that extra side of guilt. You really are doing something good for your body! 3. Eating dessert can actually improve your weight control. Cravings for sweets are one of the biggest causes of diet failure. When the average adult quits eating desserts all together, they may see improvement in their short term fitness goals. However, studies have shown that adults who indulge in dessert but eat an otherwise nutritious diet have a greater chance of producing long term success in weight loss. This is true because the body will respond to small amounts of desserts that satisfy cravings by satiating its own appetite for them.

Plus, sweets such as pumpkin pie or dark chocolate contain rich sources of whole foods that provide necessary vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants to your diet.

Choosing to stop consuming sweets altogether in the hopes of achieving a weight loss goal will almost always lead to binge eating and over consumption when you finally do indulge. Balancing your indulgences with healthier eating and regular exercise is more likely to lead to diet success than completely eliminating them.

2. Desserts make you happier…no, really! Have you ever taken a bite of your favorite dessert and felt instantly transported to a higher level of happiness? That feeling is real. Foods that have a naturally high percentage of carbohydrates help the brain and body produce

4. Desserts offer a convenient opportunity to incorporate more fruit into your diet. Fruit, as we all know by now, is an essential part of your daily intake of nutrients that keep you healthy, strong, and immune to certain diseases. Unfortunately, you may not be getting

56 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

the necessary dose of these powerful food options. Adding raspberries and blueberries to a bowl of frozen greek yogurt makes an already healthy dessert (rich in protein and healthy fats) into a positively vital meal for your daily fruit intake. Don’t be afraid to get creative; from chocolate-covered strawberries to vanilla and mango smoothies, the options are all scrumptious and endless. 5. Desserts can remedy the negative side effects of dieting. Ever wonder why they serve jelly or chocolate pudding to hospital patients? When patients lose their appetite due to illness, it is easier and more enjoyable to consume sugary, low-nutrient carbohydrates than any other type of food. According to the National Eating Disorders Association, suddenly decreasing your intake of carbs and sugar deprives your body of the necessary glucose needed for energy. Dieting can actually increase feelings of sluggishness, mental fog, and distraction. Just another reason to salvage those Hobnobs from the trash. To all the die-hard dessert fans out there, take heartthat apple pie may just be the best food choice you’ve made all day. Although it is still important to focus on consuming a well-balanced diet filled with whole grains, vegetables, and protein, desserts add a little more excitement to your meals. And besides making you happier, desserts can also sometimes make you healthier.

HEADS UP Who knows the menu best? Who makes the biggest impact on your experience? Front of house is your friend! H&N talk shop with Kim Myers, general manager of the award winning Stansfield Arms in Apperley Bridge.

THE STANSFIELD ARMS APPERLEY BRIDGE BD10 0NP TEL: 0113 2502659 www.gctaverns.co.uk

“I think the character of the building, the relaxed atmosphere and the friendly staff go a long way towards our success” How long have you been working at The Stansfield Arms?

Eight years in May, although I have worked for the owners Chris and Nick Green for eleven years in total.

So, to get us up to speed, give us a brief overview of your career to press.

I have worked in hospitality since I was 16 doing bar and waitress work at The White Bear in Norwood Green, Halifax. I left there to go to Northumbria University where I got my degree in marketing management; however, during this time I still worked at The White Bear during holidays to make some extra money. Once I finished my degree, I went back to The White Bear as assistant manager, this was sold a couple of years later to Chris and Nick in a package deal, along with The Stansfield Arms as part of the Greencliffe Taverns group. The White Bear was sold a couple of years later and I stayed there for a month until an opening for assistant manager came up at The Stansfield Arms. I have been the general manager here for the last five years and head up events, outside catering and Christmas.

The unsociable hours take some getting used to but I am lucky that my partner is in the industry so understands the level of commitment required.

What skills have been put to the test since joining the Stansfield team?

My organizational skills were well and truly tested when our marquee was completely flooded on Boxing Day and we had to find a new venue to host our New Year Gala Ball! The whole team worked tirelessly to make sure our customers had a superb experience and were not left disappointed. Thanks to our close working relationship with Woodhouse Grove School we were able to take over and transform their sports hall and create a perfect marquee experience indoors!

What are your bestselling dishes?

Pan Fried Lamb Rump is by far the best selling dish on the menu and our Fish Specials are always really popular and they change on a regular basis so keep diners coming back time and again. At the moment we are selling a lot of Grilled Tuna Steak, Cod Loin and Sword Fish Steaks and Moules Mariniere are a constant favourite.

What’s the best thing about working here?

What drinks are going down well?

What’s the most challenging part of your job?

Tell us: what do you think makes this restaurant so special?

Every day is different. The staff are lovely and it’s an extended family because we spent so much time working together. The recent floods are a great example of the team pulling together and Chris and Nick really look after us and make sure we are rewarded for good work. The Stansfield is always extremely busy and every day throws up different challenges, but challenges make the job more interesting and helps to develop the more inexperienced team members. Our business mix is diverse from funerals to weddings, outside catering to running the busy restaurant and bar. There are always at least six balls in the air!

We sell a massive amount of Prosecco! We offer full sized and mini bottles and the ladies just love it! Blonde Bitter, all of the pale ales and draft Peroni also fly out. Usually in the winter months red wine sells really well but this year it’s definitely white wine and prosecco that have led the way.

If you were a customer today, what would you order from the menu? Seabass! No doubt about it. I love fish and this dish is light, very healthy and totally delicious.

What do you think makes great customer service?

Being adaptable to each customer’s needs and being able to recognize when a customer wants something, being able to recharge glasses without disturbing the conversation on the table. Noticing and acting on the little things that create a great dining experience and make customers want to come back time and again, making their experience memorable for all the right reasons.

Where have you visited recently where the service was excellent?

A pub in Brighouse where I live called The Gray Ox. It’s really warm and friendly with open fires. There’s a good menu and wine list and the staff always make you feel welcome and looked after.

Where would you eat out on your day off?

I like trying new places, especially in Leeds where there are so many great restaurants. My partner is a trained chef so we appreciate good food and the whole dining experience, whether it is a top restaurant or the local pub. It depends on our mood and if we want something quick or a more relaxed meal.

What do you cook at home?

I don’t…that’s the one of the perks of living with a chef!

Chris and Nick have two passions in this business which are trained well into the team; products and people and the two are undeniably on point. I think the character of the building, the relaxed atmosphere and the friendly staff go a long way towards our success too.

GUISELEY VENUES NEW CHEF, TO BRING ‘SOUL AND HEART’ TO THE MENU

like us: everybodysalldaysocial follow us: @EverybodysSoc

The Head Chef for new Guiseley venue, ‘Everybodys’ has been announced as Stuart Dixon, who has worked in some highly acclaimed restaurants, with Chefs such as Gary Rhodes and Paul Heathcote. Stuart has over 18 years’ experience as a Chef, and in addition to the above has also worked locally with Chris Monkman at The Fleece in Addingham. Stuart will be designing and creating the menu for the venue opening in March 2016. Stuart said “The menu will be honest, seasonal and regional with fun elements, sourced locally and created with soul and heart. I still get the same buzz from working in a kitchen now, as I did when I first started out at just 15 years old and can’t wait to get started on creating the dishes for ‘Everybodys’.” The two local entrepreneurs that are preparing to revitalise the old Cellar V venue in Guiseley are Paul Glendinning, CEO of Guiseley-based insurance broking group JM Glendinning, and Adam Lewis, Director of Twisted Bars Ltd. The duo have ploughed £250,000 into creating Everybodys, a new concept designed to enhance the current food and drink offer in the town. From morning coffee and brunch to social and casual weekday and weekend dining and drinks, Everybodys will serve ‘good food and drinks, with a twist’.

Paul says “Guiseley has been crying out for more quality bars and eateries, and our vision is to offer something for everyone. We’ll be creating a tempting menu and friendly atmosphere that we hope will attract families, couples and people looking for a working lunch, as well as those heading out in the evening for drinks with friends or family.” Ilkley-born Adam Lewis has lived in Guiseley for ten years and has spent the last 20 years working in the hospitality industry, opening his first bar 13 years ago. He also owns The Yard in Ilkley and in Malton. Together, the duo believe they have come up with a recipe for success in Guiseley, and are looking for the right people to join the Everybodys team: “Getting the right people in place who share our passion for high quality products, locally sourced food and commitment to delivering a fantastic customer experience is vital,” says Adam. “We are prepared to invest heavily in the right people, and we’re currently putting the finishing touches to our very own bespoke training module. We are putting in place a team that will deliver excellent customer service, has great product knowledge on food, coffee, cocktails, craft beer and wines. This customer experience will be delivered in an environment that will be fun and welcoming throughout the day and into the evening.” The pair say the new opening will create 30 local jobs, and that they are already looking for venues for the next bar. This is the first of ten similar venues they plan to open in and around Yorkshire over the next seven years.

THE

AGORA

GREEK & TURKISH CUISINE

A REFRESHING TASTE OF THE MED AND EXTRAORDINARILY GOOD VALUE... Situated on popular Horsforth’s New Road Side, this family run restaurant is a ‘Mediterranean Oasis’ serving up authentic and mouth watering Greek and Turkish fayre, the perfect place to brighten up a rainy Saturday afternoon with the girls....

It’s been a while since I’ve dined in a Greek restaurant, so when I noticed this little breath of fresh air leaping out of what was the dreary old Horsforth Club, I was eager to road test this relatively new addition to one of the most popular parts of North Leeds, and find out how it would fair against its well established neighbours... Agora opened it’s doors late last summer and has been a well received additon to Horsforth according to Trip Advisor. I’m not surprised however, as soon as I walked inside I was happy to be there. A beautiful yet simple, bright and airy restaurant with quality furnishings and a really laid back atmosphere, a pleasant start. My friend and I were greeted by a friendly waitress who gave us our choice of tables. Seating ourselves next to the window, our drinks order taken it was time to take in the substantial offering from the menu. There are plenty of dishes here, from Keftedes, Falafel, Halloumi and Sucuk on the hot starter menu to Feta Cheese with Olives, Stuffed Vine Leaves, Hummus and plenty of other authentic cold starters. The Agora offers a two course lunch menu - which I believe is the same as the Early Bird offering, and is, in my opinion, absolutely amazing value. There are one or two items on the menu that are not included on the fixed price menu, but not many and the choice really is fantastic on both starters and main courses for just £13.95! I chose stuffed vine leaves to start, whilst my friend opted for feta in filo pastry. The portions sizes are huge! We were both taken aback slightly given we had ordered from a set price menu, one could have expected slightly 62 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

smaller portions but absolutely not! The starters were both well presented, looked delicious infact, and really were delicious. The fact the starters were so big gave us ample opportunity to try each other’s which was really nice. There are Meze’s available for sharing on the menu - which are included in the fixed price menu so when I return for my second visit I would opt for that so I could try even more! Our main courses arrived after a perfectly timed interlude, yet again, huge portions but beautifully presented and so many things to go at on one plate! I ordered the Adana, a spicy skewer of chargrilled minced lamb. It was served with delicious sauces, fresh salad and quinoa. The lamb was so tasty, and perfectly cooked with just the right amount of spice - a mint yoghurt type sauce cut through the rich intensity of the lamb and the other slightly spicy sauce just added more flavour. I like the fact the dishes are served as they are including sides, I am no expert on Greek or Turkish cuisine so I am glad to have the experts decide what best to accompany my choice! My friend was also more than happy with her choice of main course - a chicken dish with spicy tomato sauce also served with fresh salad and quinoa. Again I can concur it was just as tasty as my main course and there was so much she asked for a doggy bag - I never do this as I always feel a little embarrassed - also I normally eat everything! However, our lovely waitress was not at all surprised by this request and presented the extra food in a cute little Agora takeaway bag, of course which begged the question, do you offer take out service? “Not generally - but we often have to give people doggy bags!” So their portions are huge, but the food is that good, you’ll want to take it home with you and the prices are more than agreeable. Say no more. Reviewed by Joanne Brook-Smith, January 2016

T 0113 267 2100 151 Otley Road, Cookridge Leeds www.gustorestaurant.uk.com

gusto always delivers the goods and this was no exception... In the leafy Leeds suburb of Cookridge sits a 200-year old Olive tree, providing the perfect backdrop to the timeless elegance of Gusto. Add to that a superb wine and cocktail list and you’ll get a real flavour of Italy combined with proper Yorkshire class. There are so many shiny new restaurants popping up in every corner of Leeds at the moment, that it must be hard to stand out, the benchmark is so high and our expectations are growing continually. I know from experience the excitement of attending the opening of some cleverly marketed new restaurant concept, only to forget all about it by the week after and never return again…. Winner of our ‘Best Suburban Restaurant 2015’ and with good reason, Gusto Cookridge serves up fantastic Italian cuisine in stylish surroundings. That’s why I was so happy when I was asked to review it! Not so much a shiny new restaurant (although it is always very sparkly due to the hoards of fairy lights hanging in every window) but a steadfast sanctuary of reliably excellent food, service and atmosphere. The continuity of high standards across all facets of this popular restaurant make dining here – whatever the occasion, an absolute pleasure. This particular occasion being a rather blustery Monday evening in February. The twinkly backdrop serving as a welcome refuge from the storm raging outside! My friend and I were greeted warmly and shown to the lower floor of the restaurant, I was glad to be seated in this part as the open kitchen and pizza oven contribute to the warm atmosphere as does the 200 hundred year old olive tree wrapped in fairy lights that plays centre stage – Gusto really is a very pretty restaurant. After ordering a perfectly chilled bottle of Italian Sauvignon Blanc, we perused the which is fairly extensive – lots of choice, from seafood and steaks to a great offering of pizza, pasta and risotto dishes. I chose the calamari to start and it was particularly delicious. Coated in a light crispy batter and served with lemon mayonnaise. Presented well, just the right size portion and so tasty. My friend chose the tiger prawns in a garlic, tomato and cream sauce with grilled ciabatta. It was also presented beautifully and again just the right amount, I am assured it was delicious.

Starters cleared and more wine poured, by Joe, our waiter, who incidentally provided exceptional service throughout the whole evening, attentive but not intrusive and right on the money with the wine service – a part of service which is lacking in so many restaurants. I don’t want to pour my own wine – one, I’m paying for a service and two, I hate the water from the ice bucket dripping all over the place! Anyway I digress, the service was fantastic, thank you Joe. Our main courses arrived after a short interlude. I had ordered a Diavola pizza with extra chilli, I love spice! My guest chose the flattened rump steak on my recommendation, served pink or well done, with garlic, chilli, peppercorn, sea salt, rocket and Grana Padano. This steak has been on the menu for years, and I have been enjoying it for years! Of course it went down a storm on this occasion also. My pizza was absolutely to die for. I love pizza, seriously, I do actually consider myself somewhat of an expert in this matter. I can say, well, with absolute gusto, that Gusto make the best pizza this side of Naples. Thin and crispy base, authentic marinara sauce with hot chilli, pepperoni and oozing melty mozzarella! I asked for extra chilli and I got it, this pizza was absolutely sublime and came with a kick that’s for sure. I also ordered the Italian fried courgettes – just because I absolutely love them with a bit of mayonnaise! If you haven’t tried them you should, I know at least two courgette haters that share my adoration of them! Neither of us could quite finish our main courses, and we hadn’t left enough room for dessert (I have sampled plenty from this menu previously and highly recommend the Nutella and mascarpone calzone, no matter how many tweaks the menu has had, this dish always remains, a testament to its deliciousness maybe….) So we polished off the wine and called it a night. Dinner at Gusto was certainly a very pleasant way to spend a Monday evening and in fact I would recommend gusto for any evening – or any occasion. This restaurant lends itself just as well to a romantic dinner for two as it does for a large family party, tea with the kids or a night out with the girls. Family friendly, yet glamourous and stylish all at the same time. Gusto, yet again my expectations were surpassed. Bang on the money, can’t wait to go back! THE WEEKENDER H&N editor, Angela Riches, checks out Fishmore Hall

How far will you travel for a weekend break? People usually want somewhere within a two-hour drive, but we think that if the place is good enough you just might be prepared to travel an extra hour for a truly great experience. With that in mind we decided to visit Fishmore Hall in Ludlow, Shropshire, as we had heard quite a bit about this privately owned boutique hotel earning Trip Advisor awards and how amazing their restaurant is; both good enough reasons for us to make the three-hour journey to Shropshire from Yorkshire to see what all the fuss is about. It was late January and we set off on a beautiful crisp, cold but bright sunny winter day, the journey ahead looked good. Oh dear, as soon as we left Yorkshire, the sky turned grey then the rain started, quickly turning into sleet and by the time we reached the M6 we were in snow territory! Luckily it didn’t last and although we didn’t ever get the sun back, we enjoyed the rest of the journey and were looking forward to reaching our destination and a relaxing gourmet break. Driving through Ludlow was a bit of a déjà vu experience as it is very reminiscent of York. A thriving medieval market town, the historic town centre is situated on a cliff above the River Teme and is surrounded by the beautiful countryside of south Shropshire and the Welsh Marches. This looked really promising, however we were keen to reach Fishmore Hall and explore Ludlow later. We arrived within minutes of driving through the town centre, 66 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

it was early afternoon and encouraging to see a full private car park and a beautiful whitewashed Georgian house, buzzing with guests checking in and local people dining for lunch. Big smiles all round, we were on to a winner. Entering Fishmore Hall we were impressed by the warm welcome acknowledgement from the receptionist who sat behind a lovely big old desk in the entrance hall; nothing cold, corporate and clinical about this place. As we waited to be checked in, we quickly explored the adjoining rooms. This had obviously been a big palatial house and every room was large, wellfurnished and inviting. High ceilings, comfy furniture and amazing views from every one of its high sash windows. We were soon shown to our luxurious room, with possibly the largest bed we have ever seen made with crisp linen sheets; the bathroom boasted a very large bath and a cross between a walk in shower and a wet room. On a heated towel rail hung thick white fluffy towels and delicious Molton Brown toiletries sat waiting to be used alongside a fabulous Hollywood style-lit make up mirror – ladies you will appreciate how exciting this was for me! Fluffy bathrobes and slippers were laid out for us and the mini bar was bursting with local goodies. This was going to be a great stay! After unpacking we explored our surroundings, in particular we wanted to see the grounds and the restaurant so we ventured outside in to the cold late afternoon winter air for a quick walk in the garden, but by now it was way too cold so we thought better of it and ran back inside to check out the main restaurant, Forelles and the menu. Forelles is situated in the recently added orangery, where through huge floor to ceiling windows you can really appreciate the stunning setting and the Shropshire landscape. This was a beautiful restaurant with an exciting menu that we were keen to try. We wandered back to our room to relax before dinner and watch the large flat screen TV.

Snuggling into our robes we relaxed on our giant bed with a couple of G and T’s before getting ready for dinner. Yes, Fishmore Hall is the kind of place where you dress for dinner; I’m not talking jacket and tie but definitely smart. In the bar, the charismatic restaurant manager introduced himself to us, provided us with menus to look at while he prepared our pre-dinner drinks, a glass of Prosecco each, and expertly explained the menu to us. However, whenever we dine out and there is a Tasting Menu available, we always go for that to get a really good selection of dishes in one sitting. If you have never tried a tasting menu because you think six plus courses will be far too much, each course is as the title says – a taste. A small portion, a sample of each dish and it’s a superb way to experience more of the menu. Even better if you choose to take the wine flight as well; the restaurant manager or wine sommelier chooses a different wine to accompany each course, one which they think perfectly matches the food. Yes, we also chose the wine flight. As the tasting menu is made up of so many different dishes it would be difficult to choose one bottle to match everything. Just to put your mind at rest as to the price of the wine flight, it was probably the most reasonably priced of any we have seen at only £29.50 per person for six glasses of different good quality wines. We decided on the six course tasting menu at £65 per person, there is a nine course option but we played safe just in case it was too much. After a stunning amuse bouche, we were presented with our first starter; Diver Caught Scallops with cauliflower, apple, coriander and cumin, accompanied by a glass of Gavi di Gavi, La Meirana, 2014. Love scallops and this dish was stunning; I can say no more. Second starter we were slightly nervous about as it was a first for us both; Dorset Snails with celeriac, slow cooked egg, parsley and garlic and a glass

of Minervois Rosé, Chateau Villerambert Julien, 2014. Ah hem…we both very bravely tried a little bit of one snail each and quickly decided they were an acquired taste, just not ours! However, the rest of the dish was delicious and the poor little snails were left on the side. Fish course; Line Caught Hake, parsley root, purple sprouting and Ox tongue plus Sauvignon Blanc, Buitenverwachting, 2015. Delicate, beautifully cooked and one to have a full sized portion of! For the meat course we had Braised Brisket of Welsh Wagyu served with celeriac, fois gras and truffle and the wine was a Zinfandel Sebastiani, Sonoma, 2013. Wagyu cattle are fed beer and massaged to create a full flavoured, very tender meat and one that once had you will want again and again. Another stunning dish. Next came two desserts; Salted Caramel Fondant with crème fraiche and cider sorbet accompanied by Coteaux du Layon St, Aubin 2014; and then Banana Mousse with hazelnuts and caramel cremeaux and a glass of Monbazillac, Domaine de Grange Neuve, 2010. What a menu. What wines. What a restaurant…what a chef! We finished the meal with our favourite Martini Espresso and were lucky enough to have a chat with head chef, Andrew Birch. It was an opportunity to get under the skin of the man who created and cooked the dinner we had and he was every bit as passionate as we expected him to be. Andrew’s passion lies firmly in the quality of the produce he uses to create each superb dish, and his recently awarded 3AA Rosettes, we are sure will very soon be followed with a Michelin star! This might have been our first visit to Fishmore Hall but I guarantee, it will certainly not be the last…it was well worth the extra hour to get there.
