REGULARS

Well, there’s so much happening in our region this year, where do I begin? The new restaurants opening is huge and great for the area, giving so much more choice outside of Leeds, although the Leeds dining boom also continues and we are pleased to bring some more recommendations to you in this edition of H&N. By the way, we love hearing your own views on the restaurants we recommend, it’s great to hear so many of you try them out. Well, there’s a few more to read about and we make sure there’s something for everyone, if you prefer fine dining you will love reading about our visit to The Black Swan in Helmsley, what a treat that was. We also take a look at more casual dining at Everybodys in Guiseley, a unique and much needed bar and restaurant serving food from 9am to 9pm. There’s a lot more but I don’t want to spoil your discovery of them as you read through the magazine. We’ve also uncovered an amazing worldwide skin care and make up range based in Little Germany, Bradford. Cougar Products is a phenomenal success story for the region and one we so proud to shout about. You will all want to try them, we are currently using the Platinum Snow Algae Body Cream and Bee Venom Hand Cream…yes that’s right, I bet you can’t guess what’s in the other products! We love them, bet you will too. As it’s now officially Summer, we’ve got some great summer fashion and travel features, including reviews of local day spa’s which was a revelation, we found some real hidden gems and can’t wait for you to discover them too. Our Discovering Yorkshire theme focuses on Baildon this time and what a fabulous place it turned out to be; steeped in history and a real tourist destination. Our trail continues next time with Farsley on the outskirts of Leeds. We’ve realised we are spoilt for choice, the list is growing and the possibilities are endless...watch this space we could be coming to your town or village soon. Until next time…

What makes a good designer great? Some might saythe key to success is a strong, recognisable aesthetic. Take Christian Dior; the name alone conjures images of accentuated feminine silhouettes, opulence and luxury. How about Vivienne Westwood? Bold statements and unconventional design? So what happens when you come across a designer that doesn’t adopt a consistent style? Well then you wind up with a timeless icon like Marc Jacobs. Never being one to conform, the 52 year old New Yorker’s refreshing approach to tackle each new collection with contemporary inspiration has made the Marc Jacobs brand synonymous with leading edge designs. We take a look at how fashion’s favourite wild child remains on point after 30 years in the game. Jacobs’ free spirited attitude was born from adversity. Tragically fatherless at age 7, he was consequently moved from home to home after a string of his mother’s failed marriages. As a young teen Jacobs decided to move in with his Grandmother living on the upper west side of Manhattan. He developed a strong relationship with his Grandmother who was a creative soul, well travelled and educated. She created a stable and loving environment for Jacobs to flourish and 6 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

actively encouraged his self exploration.“No one ever said ‘no’ to me about anything,” Marc explains of his upbringing. “No one ever told me anything was wrong. Never. No one ever said, ‘You can’t be a fashion designer.’ No one ever said, ‘You’re a boy and you can’t have long hair.’ No one ever said, ‘You can’t go out at night because you’re 15 and 15-year-olds don’t go to nightclubs.” After graduating from the coveted Parsons School of design in 1984, it wasn’t long before Jacobs gained notoriety as a fashion prodigy becoming the youngest designer to win the Council of Fashion Designers of America ‘Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent’. After a subsequential 9 year stint as womenswear designer at Perry Ellis he skyrocketed to the top launching his Marc Jacobs label in 1993 and becoming creative director at Louis Vuitton in 1997. Passionate about the concept of change and the shock of the new, he became renowned for being ‘anti-attitude, anti-establishment, anti-marketing’. One of the first to introduce streetwear to the runway, Jacobs never did and still does not conform to seasonal trends. Fashion critic Robin Givhan describes of a Marc Jacobs show, “You never really knew what to expect... You’d see the same trends all week, and then something new would come out of the clear blue sky from Marc, and it would change what everyone thought.” Jacobs’ eclectic sources of inspiration have led to an array of different styles over his 30 plus year career. Labelled the ‘Guru of Grunge’ in his early days after sending flannel shirts, doc martens, shapeless slips and beanies down the runway for Perry Ellis (which subsequently got him

fired), he became the definition of nineties fashion. In fact youth culture has always played an influential role in the development of Marc’s collections; from the ‘weird frat party’ (his own words) behind Spring 2014 RTW through to teen goth in his latest Fall 2016 show. Marc finds a fresh inspiration each season which results in a completely new look for every collection. He explains, ‘I love how the reality of fashion is all about something for that moment and then the extremity of dismissal. I love that kind of dedication, devotion - obsession with what looks so amazing that you have to have it now. And then saying next season, ‘well I wouldn’t be caught dead in it.’

The latest Fall 2016 RTW collection showed back in February at New York’s fashion week. In a departure to Jacobs’ usual artistic stages, spectators were this time greeted by a simple all-white runway, but he did not disappoint. Dressed from head to toe in multiple layers of black, models floated down the catwalk like ghostly apparitions against the stark backdrop. Like a scene straight from the cult classic Beetlejuice, outfit after outfit inspired by dark, gothic character Lydia wowed a pleasantly shocked audience. Full victoriana skirts and delicate laces were offset against nineties inspired, oversized sweaters and sky high platforms. Finger waved hair and decadent furs reminded us of the 1920’s whilst a dark colour palette brought gothic drama. A collection born from what seemed a million ideas was brought together in the way only Jacobs could. Looking forward to the future of fashion, Jacobs’ is upset by the lack of true originality. The sort of boldness and daring which has been the cornerstone of his success. “ It seems like it’s all the same - the idea of what is edgy or cool. It’s style with no substance; it doesn’t really seem born of anything. I don’t see the rebellion or edge in it. It just looks like a cliche”. Unfortunately it may be the case, but as Jacobs presses on focusing solely on his own label, we can rely on fashion’s fearless designer to fill the void for many years to come.

THE BOX Top tips for organising your jewellery & accessories from Pia Jewellery...

“Organising your jewellery and accessories is the first step to organising the rest of your life” says Sarah Jane-Volkers, Creative Director and jewellery aficionado of Pia Jewellery. Once a year is a good number when it comes to editing your jewellery and accessories collection. Think of these accessories as being just like the windows of your home, you wouldn’t keep a dirty or damaged window now would you? Do you have a collection of back-up frames in your back garden? Collections can go from zero to hero in no time; put an alert in your diary to do the yearly spring jewellery and accessory clean. Start by doing a ‘let go’ edit, be honest with yourself take each piece (be it a handbag or a hair slide) one by one and spare it a thought, “Do I really need you? Do I really want you? Will you work with what I’m planning to wear in the foreseeable future?” Anything at or above two yesses is a keeper, below and it’s a ‘let go’. Give unwanted costume jewellery to friends or loved ones, or donate it to a local charity shop (re-wearing is caring). If you are having an internal battle with yourself on the ‘giving away’ of said items, think of the process as a case of out-with-the old to make room for the new.

job by keeping your precious pieces under lock and key. The Pia Cheval Mirror jewellery cabinet cleverly conceals jewellery and accessories within it whilst keeping things in order (thanks to a carefully curated collection of compartments) and acts as a useful full-length mirror too, and yes! It comes with a key. Now, get it together. Keep all of your beloved accessories and jewellery bits and bobs in the same place, be it inside a mirrored jewellery cabinet or in a dedicated area of your wardrobe at home. This will save you time and energy, both of which are precious commodities in this day and age I’m sure you will agree. “Getting ready takes long enough already” Says Sarah-Jane, Pia suggests avoiding fashion hysteria by storing accessories together at home – “zone belts, bangles and bags together – and save yourself valuable time, this is particularly important when dashing out the door to catch a train or before the school run”. So that’s your jewellery and accessories starting to resemble some sort of order, now for the rest of your life....

What now? Be prepared to stay prepared! Hanging your necklaces is a really great way to avoid jewellery casualties. There is nothing worse than spending valuable time untangling long necklaces. Hanging them is part of organisation preparation and makes it much easier to select the items you want quickly, there are many great jewellery hanger options out there but Pia customers seem to love our ‘Loving The Look’ jewellery holder as it is a charming hanger and ever so practical but still a little bit quirky and fun. When you have completed this collection organising coup it becomes easily maintained for the future, in order for this to work however we will need your help; hang your necklace or pendant straight back onto your jewellery hanger at the end of the day. Side tables, floors and bathroom sinks do not count as your jewellery hanger in this instance… The team at Pia Jewellery likes to think outside of the box when it comes to Pia products, from bejeweled and Puppy Dog studs to the Opalite Dragonfly Earrings, Thinking outside of the ‘box’ (when it comes to earring storage) is something you can do as part of your quest to get organised. Keeping earrings on a flat surface such as a small pin board or an earring book makes the selection process before an evening out, much more enjoyable whilst helping to keep pairs together for longer. A good thing to remember when choosing your jewellery board or book is that a black background is best for accentuating metals and gemstones, this can be applied to the wearing of, as well as the storing of, your lovely new organised edit of shiny things. Who doesn’t love a shiny thing? Exactly! So Pia also suggests locking valuables away to avoid jewellery ‘heists’. Keep your favourite accessories safe from temptation; children love shiny things just as much as you do, so avoid an inside

SITTING PRETTY

Flying the flag for business in Yorkshire Cougar Products, part of Rosdon Group are based in Little Germany, Bradford and what a super success story they are! Set up originally by current Managing Director, Paula Dunne grandparents, Rose and Gordon Fowler (hence the name Rosdon), they began retailing cosmetics in Leeds Market, importing brands from all over the world, keeping an emphasis on providing something different to the consumer. Believing in this consumer led approach has been the key to their

14 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

success. As they moved from their humble beginnings to distributing cosmetics and beauty brands around the UK, they felt quality and uniqueness of products were not the core belief of the brands they carried. This later led them to begin sourcing and designing their own beauty brands, keeping the whole process in house in the Leeds/ Bradford area and capitalising from the emphasis of high quality manufacturing in the UK.

“ The Cougar Beauty range has been formulated and designed for those who enjoy high quality products and are not prepared to compromise.” In the 1980’s, Gordon and Rose’s granddaughter Paula moved to the USA, therefore expanding their export network within the US and spurring their global export strategy. Their global reach has expanded over the years and they now export products all over the world, having strong distribution networks and relationships in mainland Europe, USA, the Middle East and Asia. How they are different? After viewing and testing many beauty manufacturers from all over the world, Cougar Products are proud to confirm that all of their products are made in the UK. Paula believes quality is the key to longevity in business therefore striving for high quality ingredients. Paula is also rightly very proud of the fact that all of her products are completely cruelty free. With everything being formulated and manufactured in the UK, none of the products have or ever will be tested on innocent creatures. It is against the law in the UK and all European countries to test on animals which is something Paula is more than happy to support. Unique offerings separate Cougar from their competition. A key focus for any product is that it works and Cougar Products always have the highest legally allowed concentrate of active ingredient and the best quality inactive’s to ensure the best and safest results for their customers. No cost has been spared bringing the most innovative formulas, designs and technology to make Cougar Beauty Products a leading

international brand name. All the products are new, edgy, of the highest quality and most importantly, they work. Paula told us, “At Cougar we are passionate about preserving the Earth for future generations and are always looking for new ways to help our beautiful planet. All our products and packaging are manufactured in the UK, ensuring less greenhouse gases are emitted during the manufacturing process. We have completely cut out transportation from the process as all ingredients are sourced locally. We take pride in the fact we only ever use Cruelty Free formulas that are never tested on animals. All of our packaging is recyclable and any marketing material is made from recycled material.” The Products Perfect for Summer The Airbrush Legs Stockings is the perfect alternative to stockings and tights. This new and improved formulation is designed to be quick, easy and leave you ready-to-go once applied. Skin imperfections such as varicose veins, cuts, bruises, scars etc. can all be successfully covered up with just one light application. With a build-up of layers, this innovative formulation can even cover tattoos! Paula Say’s “This is one of my favourite products. It’s a must have and is a customer favourite since we first ever formulated it. It’s light and moisturising, so it’s perfect for me as I love a tan and hate having to wear tights on hot summer days!”.

The Cougar skincare ranges have been carefully formulated with innovative ingredients to offer the market something a little different. Not only do they offer unique active’s such as bee venom or platinum snow algae, but all have been tested to work wonders for the skin! The Snake Venom Range, a top seller, has the active ingredient of SYN-ake, a synthetic snake venom ingredient that mimics the effect of Snake Venom on the body, but through the skin. SYN-ake has a paralysing effect on muscle contractions in the face, these are what cause lines and wrinkles to appear over time. Other ingredients also help to tone, tighten and plump the skins surface leaving a fresher, more radiant appearance. “Our skincare has been developed to help ease all different types of skin impurities and flaws. Acne Scarring? Just use our Snail Slime Range, as Snail Secretion is known for its rejuvenation and repairing effects. Lost plumpness in your skin? Hyaluronic Acid Facial Oil will plump your skin back up with moisture and help collagen production. There’s so much our skincare ranges can offer to our customers and their needs!” Where you can purchase Cougar Products? Cougar Products are available in most main department stores throughout the USA and Canada, also on Ideal World Channel 21 Shopping Channel and through their own website www.cougarproducts.com. Plus shopping channels throughout Italy, Germany and the US. Currently in the UK you can purchase Cougar Products through Superdrug and Ocado, they are also in talks with some other major UK retail outlets so that their products will be readily available on more UK shelves, but in the meantime check out this amazing beauty range on their website and thank you and well done Paula for flying the Yorkshire flag!

BAILDON

We discover our own Gateway to the Dales....

Discovering Yorkshire BAILDON

Continuing our discovery of the most desirable places in Yorkshire to live, raise a family and run a business, in this edition we are discovering Baildon. Whether you still think of Baildon as a village or embrace its new town status, it is certainly proving to be a great place to live and the town itself is known as one of the most prosperous in the area. Baildon is best known for the moors that it nestles amongst and depending on the weather, they can look bleak or beautiful. This is a favourite area with walkers and picnickers throughout the summer and is a lovely place to spend the day entertaining the children through the long summer holidays. The moor is also famous for the evidence of prehistoric activity that has been found there. Such evidence includes Bronze Age ‘cup and ring marks’ carved into the local gritstone outcrops and the remains of an Iron Age settlement as well as many others. During the Industrial Revolution, Baildon developed as a centre for the wool industry, the success of this industry meant that the town continued to thrive and by the time that its own industry started to fall into decline, Baildon had already managed to establish itself as a commuter town with railway links to Leeds and Bradford. There is an amazingly active community here and anything you need to know about what’s going on, events, projects and planning, 16 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

it’s all readily available on the Baildon Town Council website: which you can find at: www. baildontowncouncil.gov.uk.

community spirit is strong with lots of active residents groups to choose from if you want to get more involved.

You can find out all about the rich history of Baildon, discovering a past which is very well documented and makes great reading; there’s also a superbly detailed map of the town with every shop, café, restaurant and business clearly marked. The wealth of variety and number of local independent businesses here is astonishing, most have been established for many years and only disappear when the proprietor retires the premises then are snapped up within days, such is the success rate of running a business in this town and the number of new businesses eager to move in.

Baildon also hosts many exciting events in which the whole community comes together, there’s August Bank Holiday’s Harley Davidson Biker Rally, and The Scarecrow Festival and Baildon at Christmas, both of which pull in lots of visitors. Plus lots to see and do; visit the Victorian Tramway at Shipley Glen which runs at weekends, or the beautiful Roberts Park and parts of Saltaire World Heritage Site are within the Baildon boundary. So next time you can’t decide where to go for a brilliant day out, let Baildon be on the top of your list, you will be so pleased you did!

The main shopping centre, generally referred to as ‘the village’, centres on historic ‘Townsgate’ and offers great diversity in its selection of independent businesses which include a bridal shop, florist, chiropodist, two traditional barber shops, hairdressers, beauticians, a computer shop, cafes, bars and restaurants. In fact such is the selection of places to dine, you will be spoilt for choice, but you will struggle to find anywhere better than Pickles Deli where everything is made on the premises, fresh each day. There are several other parades of unique and individual shops in ‘The Village’ to discover and you can easily spend a day doing just that. With Baildon’s housing market strong, great schools and transport links and the proximity to the countryside, it’s easy to see why it continues to grow in popularity as a place to live and

A hidden gem in the centre of Baildon... Pickles Deli is a favourite destination for those in the know. Although the venue has been serving delicious home-cooked food daily for more than 5 years, it’s still somewhat of a secret to many. Owner Louise Pickles converted the derelict Towngate Rooms - a Baildon landmark with its famous clock which had fallen into disrepair - for her eponymous tea rooms. Since opening in 2010, the business has gone from strength to strength. Pickles is a true family businesses, with daughters Charlotte in the kitchen and Hannah front of house, and Grandma taking orders on the counter.

Louise stocks a nice selection of local beers and carefully chosen wines and entertainment can be arranged. Pickles is a beautiful destination for a wedding, and although not licensed for ceremonies, is popular with brides marrying locally. The historic building with its pretty dining room, featuring stained glass windows and chandeliers, is a romantic setting for any wedding. A number of different menus are on offer to suit varying budgets, or Louise is happy to work with brides to create a seasonal menu that is truly unique.

Open daily from 9.30am, Pickles Deli serves breakfast, lunch and cakes all day long. Louise is known locally as for her sensational baking and her carrot cake is to be swooned over. Pickles is a popular place to lunch for the ladies of Baildon, who enjoy the sharing platters of ham, cheese and deli treats. The newly introduced afternoon tea is available with 24 hours notice. For £14.95 enjoy a towering cake stand crammed with finger sandwiches, scone with jam and cream and mini patisserie. Afternoon tea can be booked by groups and is popular for baby showers and christenings, as well as those wanting a more sedate hen do. Pickles is fully licensed and the fizz always flows on such occasions. The monthly Supper Club takes place on the 2nd Friday of the month. These themed evenings are frequently booked up far in advance and have included tapas, cabaret, and an oriental evening, drawing on Louise’s Japanese heritage. Steps towards

Easing the Pain of Relationship Breakdown Over the years, local family law specialist Juliette Kinsey of Kinsey & Co Solicitors in Baildon has witnessed the devastating effects the trauma of relationship breakdown can have on the health and wellbeing of her clients. She believes that the impact of the breakdown of a relationship can be far-reaching and should not be underestimated. As an accredited Resolution family law specialist, Juliette Kinsey believes that if separating couples try to take the five following steps, they can help reduce the impact of their separation on each other, their children and their family and friends. Whilst acknowledging that these steps will not alleviate every difficulty, Juliette does believe that much of the distress and anxiety that arises can be reduced. 1. Maintaining communication: It is vitally important that separating couples maintain a dialogue. Aggressive and unpleasant communication between couples only serves to close down the opportunity to resolve matters between themselves sensibly and sensitively. Couples who maintain a constructive dialogue and resist the temptation to become personal and embittered, undoubtedly resolve their issues more quickly and sensitively than those who adopt a confrontational approach. Equally, the way a separating couple communicate with each other will have a long term impact on their ability to provide joint support for their children. 2. Telling the children: The way separating couples break the news to their children, that they are going to live apart, is very

important in helping a child come to terms with the new family structure. Ideally, both parents should tell their children that the relationship has broken down and emphasise to the children that they are not to blame. Many children perceive that their parents have separated because they have been naughty or not worked hard at school and these misunderstandings can cause tremendous distress to children needlessly. 3. Dealing with Financial matters: Maintaining financial stability during the breakdown of a relationship is vital. Such stability emotionally assists both parties in reaching agreement regarding finances and equally helps to ensure that both parties’ credit histories remain unaffected and bad debts do not accrue needlessly. If accounts and mortgages are in joint names, both parties will need to work together if mortgage providers and banks are to action their wishes. 4. Seeking specialist family law advice: Seeking sound, sensible legal advice is a must. Choose your solicitor carefully. Ensure that your solicitor is a family law specialist and therefore able to advise you on all aspects of your relationship

breakdown. Resolution (formerly the Solicitors Family Law Association) is an organisation made up of family lawyers who undertake to deal with family matters in a constructive and sensible way. Taking specialist family law advice should not be interpreted as an aggressive move but instead a sensible step towards resolving matters practically and constructively. 5. Taking time to heal: It is often said that bereavement, divorce and moving home can be the three most stressful events in a person’s life. A relationship breakdown can embody all three. For the majority of people, divorce and separation in itself is a grieving process for the breakdown of a relationship and can indeed involve the sale of a property or the purchase of a new one. Give yourself time to adapt to your new circumstances and allow yourself to grieve. Decisions taken when you are not ready can have a detrimental effect on your long term future. You need to be confident and sure of your own wishes before taking any major decisions.

If you are separating from your partner or spouse and wish to seek further advice on your position and how best to take matters forward please contact Juliette Kinsey of Kinsey & Co Solicitors in Baildon on 01274 589900 to make an appointment to see her.

FKB K I T C H E N S I B AT H R O O M S I B E D R O O M S

In today’s price sensitive, customer driven market it has never been as competitive for businesses in the homes trade. This is where FKB Kitchens, Bathrooms and Bedrooms in Baildon have a head start on their competitors. Owner and local Baildon resident, Jamie Brown started in the building trade as a qualified electrician and progressed into renovating properties, gaining 15 years of hands on experience and building relationships with his suppliers, enabling him to work with them when he saw a business opportunity supplying tradesmen through his retail unit at Hillam Industrial Estate off Canal Road in Bradford. This progressed to a website where he sold kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms successfully online, fulfilling the orders from his unit. He quickly needed to expand and took the unit next door to provide much needed storage space as his business grew. Last year he decided to further expand his business by opening a showroom with great roadside presence, where he could display and sell his products to the general public. The showroom was almost complete and ready to open when it fell victim to the Boxing Day floods. However, Jamie quickly refurbished the showroom and opened this year, recruiting a shop manager to look after this side of the business and give dedicated time and care to customers visiting the shop.

FKB has superb impact from its position on Otley Road, opposite United Carpets, and there’s plenty to see as the shop itself is deceptively large. Whether you want a tap, work surface, supply only or complete project managed installation, through his experience and database of trustworthy, skilled tradesmen, Jamie can provide joiners, electricians, builders and plasterers to see any kitchen, bathroom or bedroom project through from planning to completion, making the whole process easier and in most cases much more cost effective for the customer. If you want an off the shelf kitchen or a handmade bespoke kitchen, or something in between then you have to visit FKB. Appliances in stock include Bosch, Smegg and Neff; worktops by Wilson Art and a full range of Granite surfaces are available, plus Earthstone solid surfaces which are increasingly popular. However, let’s not forget the extensive bedroom and bathrooms in stock and available to see. There is a big move towards sliding door wardrobes at the moment as they have massive design impact and also create more space in the bedroom and there is a huge range of these to choose from at FKB. So if you are planning a new kitchen, bathroom or bedroom, make sure you visit FKB first for a first rate job!

Titanic Spa

I love the opportunity to completely switch off and I enjoy my own company as my job involves lots of socialising and conversation, however if you don’t feel comfortable being on your own in such a large spa, it’s the perfect place to visit with your partner, mum or a friend.

W

hen looking at spa days that we can recommend to our readers, it’s always worth revisiting places we have been previously, there is always something new to try and of course things change, so whats new with Titanic? A well established spa which has seen some changes since our last visit. Titanic Spa in Huddersfield is a local favourite and has built a high profile in Yorkshire as the ‘go to’ spa, especially as it’s the only Eco Spa in the area.

The day of my visit I arrived early, I was keen to get there and unwind and I didn’t need the usual tour of the facilities as I had been here on a number of occasions so knew my way around, or thought I did, I soon realised that a number of changes had taken place since I was here last. I checked in and had my welcome cup of coffee and brownie, changed into my robe and slippers and retired to the Quiet Zone to start my book before my first treatment; an Elemis Deep Muscle Tissue Massage. This was great for my neck and shoulders, areas where my stress gathers which can be very painful, I booked this because of the description; ‘Alleviate stress, ease aching muscles and revive the senses with this powerful, customised massage. Dynamic blends of Essential Oils are prescribed to target individual needs and reduce specific stress and muscle tension. Prescribed to your needs. Well this was an hour well spent and I could certainly feel the difference afterwards. 22 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

I also had a second treatment booked, an Elemis Facial which was pure indulgence and I do love the Elemis products. Massages are not always relaxing, depending on the type you choose, whereas facials are always guaranteed to send you to sleep and completely relax you. I chose to have my treatments in the morning so that I could enjoy lunch and completely relax in the afternoon, that’s the beauty of a spa day, you tailor it to include exactly what you want. Lunch used to be a buffet of salads, pasta and rice dishes, jacket and new potatoes and freshly baked, crusty bread and this is one of the major changes at Titanic Spa as lunch is now chosen from a menu and to be honest I prefer this as everything is freshly prepared when ordered and I had a really lovely large Chicken Caesar Salad with fresh anchovies and buttered new potatoes on the side and a rather large glass of ice cold Pinot. It was a lovely sunny day so I took my wine outside onto the patio for some fresh air, another couple of chapters of my book and a bit of people watching. The outside area has also seen some changes since my last visit, they now have some very snazzy and comfortable outdoor garden furniture which replaces the tables and chairs they used to have, and they have also installed an outdoor Jacuzzi which seemed really popular as it was such a lovely day, it was in full use. On the day I went, there was a mixture of couples and groups of friends, I seemed to be the only person there on my own, which really doesn’t bother me as

As I wandered back in from the outside area, I noticed something else new; they were advertising free Decleor Masterclasses throughout the day, so I promptly booked myself in to the next class and I have to say, what a brilliant idea. There were 5 of us booked in to the session I did and they take a maximum of 6 in each session. This is so you get one to one tuition and get to try out every product, have your skin type analysed and try out the products that suit. The Decleor lady was fabulous, she was so knowledgeable and what a great way to soft sell Titanic’s customer their Decleor products! Really enjoyed that and think it is something other spas could adopt to add that little something different and free to enhance the visit. Another trip to the Quiet Zone and I thought I had better wake myself up for the drive home, so went for the Heat Experience; a chamber of rooms with steam, dry heat or ice, plus an ice plunge pool and foot spa. Feeling completely refreshed and awake, it was time to hit the road and tackle the traffic. It was good to visit Titanic again and see how they have changed things, a good move now that there are some other really good spas in the area.

Dream Spa

My experience at Dream Spa also included afternoon tea which I really enjoyed as I was so hungry after my treatments, what a way to build up an appetite! Lovely finger sandwiches, a selection of scrumptious cakes and pastries and of course a scone with jam and cream, plus a large pot of tea.

W

ant a high end spa experience but don’t want to travel miles to get there? There’s nothing worse than looking forward to a well-earned day of relaxation and pampering and knowing that the journey there will stress you out even more! Getting up at the crack of dawn to travel miles in traffic to get there on time, then there’s the journey back to look forward to...not! Well H&N has discovered the perfect place, right on the doorstep in Gomersal…who knew?

two treatment beds, shower, toilet and Jacuzzi and this is the room I was lucky enough to have my treatments in. If you visit with your partner or a friend then this room is absolutely perfect, make sure you book it.

Dream Spa is the new addition to The Gomersal Park Hotel, a privately owned hotel, set in beautiful parkland only 5 minutes from both Junction 26 and 27 of the M62 and is located at the very heart of West Yorkshire. The hotel is only a short drive from the centre of Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Halifax and Wakefield which makes the journey manageable at any time of day. I visited Dream Spa twice in May, yes twice! The reason will become clear soon.

As Spa Manager, Debbie Dobson explained, “The Spa treatments here at Dream Spa are all about you and your physical and emotional needs on the day. At Dream Spa we believe a spa experience should be a carefully crafted journey - unique, indulgent and prescriptive. We know that there are times when you just need to step away from it all, escape the daily havoc and find a place to dream. We have some special spa day packages to hopefully help with your relaxation and pamper time.”

This spa has been so well thought out and my experience started from the moment I walked through the door, the atmosphere with its custom design surroundings and relaxing music, got me in the right frame of mind and ready for my treatments immediately. After a lovely warm greeting, I was shown around the facilities which includes 8 treatment rooms, Razul mud chamber, foot spa, sauna, steam room, swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool, experience showers and ice drop, bistro, manicure and pedicure stations and a gymnasium for those who don’t just want to relax! Best of all is the Private Spa Suite for hire, with

Dream Spa gives you time to unwind for a while before your treatments begin, with relaxing beds and vitality pool amongst other options, to preparing your body and relax your mind ahead of your treatments. I was offered a glass of Prosecco and some fresh strawberries, what could be better?

Once changed in to my complimentary robe and slippers, my treatments began with an Elemis Lime and Ginger Salt Scrub. I was scrubbed from head to toe and my body felt tingly and invigorated and ready for my Elemis Deep Tissue Muscle Massage which was actually very relaxing and sent me to sleep. Finally I enjoyed an Elemis Exotic Moisture Dew Facial which left my face looking so fresh, like I had enjoyed the best night’s sleep ever. These treatments were the perfect way to spend two and a half hours of indulgent relaxation and I thoroughly enjoyed every second.

After another nap in the relaxation lounge, my visit was all too soon at an end. However, this story does end there. Two weeks later I was invited back to review one of the new one of the new luxury Germain de Capuccini massage treatments and this was something else. This massage was on another scale entirely; during the massage, a candle burns, releasing the gorgeous lavender and mandarin fragrance. The warm wax from the candle is then poured over the body as part of the massage with the lavender and mandarin being absorbed deep in to the muscle tissue. This was super amazing a really deep and effective massage for me as at that time I was suffering badly with neck and shoulder pain which I left behind me! There are other massages in the Germain de Capuccini range which I will definitely be trying out and letting you know what I think. When you visit Dream Spa and find the treatment that’s perfect for you, you can choose whether to upgrade it to an overnight stay as there are special spa guest rates you can take advantage of. I can’t believe Dream Spa is such a hidden secret, spread the word, this place is amazing.

extensive menu plus a beverage of my choosing. Now this was my first true experience of their excellence, the menu offered lots of choice and I chose a cup of homemade leek and asparagus soup, poached salmon with dill mayo on freshly baked granary bread and then apple sorbet and fresh berries, plus glass of Chardonnay. Absolutely gorgeous!

hen you think of luxury destinations, Burnley in Lancashire might not immediately spring to mind, but The Woodland Spa, based in 100-acres of woodland on the edge of the town, has been winning award after award; UK Day Spa of the Year 2014, Best Spa in the North 2014/15, Leisure & Tourism Business of the Year 2015, Global Spa of the Year 2015 and LuxuryEmerging Spa 2015. I was invited to review the spa and it couldn’t have come at a better time, I was running on empty and needed some peace and quiet and pampering! My expectations were very high. It was very easy to find and I loved the fact that you drive down a long sweeping drive, making it very secluded. There was lots of parking and I immediately noticed more than one building, this was also a private health club and there seemed to be lots of activities going on. Initially I was a little confused as to which building to go to, and typically went into the wrong one(!), so quickly left and went to the correct one. On entering, again I was confused as I was in the gym, however I was immediately acknowledged by a member of the reception team and they offered to take me through to the spa. On a first visit the lack of direction could be a little off putting, but once in the spa I was met by a lovely tranquil atmosphere, completely different to the bustling energetic gym I had walked into.

24 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

I was greeted and checked in, then shown to a lovely comfy area where I was served complimentary coffee and pastries. I was very early so the spa was pretty quiet and this gave me the opportunity to start to unwind and take in the facilities. It was a beautiful day and I had my eye on one of the sun loungers around the outside infinity pool; my treatment was after lunch so it gave me chance to look around and really relax for a while. After my arrival refreshments, I was taken into the changing area, assigned a locker and taken on a tour of the facilities. We started with the Thermal Experience which comprised of a number of heat and ice experiences through the sauna, saunarium, steam, salt steam, ice fountain, experience showers and Rasul, the thermal mud chamber suite. Then there was the Hydrotherapy Pool with its powerful massage jets, the Serenity Pool in a low lit relaxation room and the outdoor Infinity Pool and outdoor hot tubs. The facilities are beautiful but to be honest I just wanted to jump on a sunbed, read a book and do nothing but chill and that’s exactly what I did. I noticed quite a few groups of friends arriving, however there were also people on their own who presumably like me, just wanted to escape and enjoy some ‘me time’. Suddenly I had a tummy rumble and realised it was time for lunch and on the package I was reviewing lunch was also included; three courses from an

I had chance to do a little bit more relaxing before my treatment and took full advantage. The treatment I was reviewing was the Neom Happiness Treatment which lasted one hour and fifteen minutes. My skin was lightly buffed from head to toe using Neom Body Scrub, this is then showered off and is followed by the therapist applying purposeful techniques of shiatsu, cranio, Thai massage and trigger point touch to the back, shoulder, face and scalp working to decrease stress levels and release endorphins, leaving you feeling relaxed and happier. It was a blissful hour and a quarter, my transformation was well and truly underway. I stayed for a couple more hours just chilling, in fact after my treatment I was shown to a relaxation lounge where I slept for an hour! All too soon it was time to leave, however I felt so much more equipped to hit tomorrow’s deadlines head on. It had been a fabulous experience and one that I will be repeating…often.

Hollins Hall

M

y first experience of this popular hotel was very good - booking into the spa for a treatment and afternoon tea over the telephone was effortless, quick and gave me confidence the spa was going to be nothing less than enjoyable. On arrival we were told where to go by the main receptionist and the spa reception staff explained the facilities that were available and pretty much left us to our own devices. My spa buddy is 32 weeks pregnant so needed reassurance of the treatments available and we both very quickly decided what treatment we wanted whilst waiting for the beauticians to arrive. I had to ask for bathrobes as you aren’t given them automatically like you are at some spas and after paying the £10 deposit to secure each robe, we were escorted to the treatment rooms. We both opted for Decleor facials with head, neck and shoulder massages and walked into our own rooms where the next hour was then an amazing experience and if you’re looking for something to completely blow your mind - this was the treatment to do it! My beautician was a delight - talked when appropriate and left me to my own thoughts when it wasn’t! The full hour treatment is well worth the investment and for me was the best part of the day. After our treatments we then headed to the pool area to

relax and have a chat before lunch. It was busy with swimmers and therefore we opted to relax on sunbeds for a while first - they could do with a drinks facility and some magazines dotted around to make it feel more like a spa experience, but my friend and I were too busy catching up to take too much notice . We then got changed out of our bathrobes and went for afternoon tea in Zest Bar and Restaurant. I would have loved the opportunity to leave the robes on but the facilities are a little disjointed and you weren’t really encouraged to relax enough to do that and when we did get to the bar it was definitely the right choice as no other guests were in robes either. The afternoon tea selection was the biggest treat perfect with a finger of roast ham, turkey and smoked salmon sandwich each and four small cakes each that were just delicious - plenty for my guest, bump and myself and the service was quick, (not rushed though ), and staff very friendly and attentive. Our day then would normally have been over but we were enjoying the day too much to leave yet so got changed back into our robes and went back to the pool area to relax some more as it was just far too easy - and much needed. Sauna and steam room were in the pool area with a jacuzzi attached. Fitness fans or the more energetic guests are spoilt for choice thanks to the spas first class facilities. Lots of classes were also on offer as well as a solarium. Relaxation mode took over our bodies whilst we swam and relaxed round the pool

area for a little bit longer so we never got to use the gym unfortunately. Overall a pleasant experience - if you’re looking for something a little less structured than a traditional spa then this is for you. Anyone used to lounging in a spa facility all day in their bathrobes whilst undergoing treatments and drinking green tea all day and listening to whale music will be disappointed but anyone wanting a few hours of tranquillity with a friend to unwind from the kids / work / husband / shopping / ironing etc. will enjoy a few hours here and therefore I would highly recommend. A special mention to the beauticians who looked after us during our treatments must be made though as they went out of their way to see if my pregnant buddy could use the steam room etc. And for me the good experience was wholly down to the hotel and spa’s best assets - their staff.

FRESH AND FUN NEW FITNESS TREND ARRIVES! Clubbercise, a new dance fitness class that is storming the nation has arrived in West Yorkshire, brought to you by Caroline Harris of Fitness2Glo. We wanted to know more so we grilled Caroline on your behalf! So Caroline, how does a Clubbercise class differ from other fitness classes? Clubbercise classes are taught in a darkened room with disco lighting, lasers and flashing glow sticks set to uplifting club tunes. They play anything from 90’s classics to the latest chart-toppers from the likes of Rudimental or David Guetta. What made you decide to start running Clubbercise classes as part of your timetable? I love finding new ways to help people keep fit - it’s something I’m really passionate about and when I discovered Clubbercise, I just knew people in the Yorkshire area would absolutely love it. The routines are easy-to-follow, which means you can really let go and enjoy the music. Plus, the classes appeal to a wide range of people because they’re so much fun it doesn’t feel like a workout! Is this an exercise or dance class? Both. The choreography is a blend of simple aerobic and street dance moves offering high and low impact options aimed at all abilities. What makes Clubbercise so unique? The music is a mix of 90’s classics up to the very latest floor fillers. What makes it so unique is that every class takes place with the main lights out, disco lights

on, and all routines incorporate our trademark flashing glow sticks - providing a bonus arm workout! What happens in a Clubbercise class? After checking in you can purchase a set of flashing rave glow sticks, these are reusable so much more environmentally friendly than the single use ones. We darken the room, get the disco lights going and start with a simple warm up routine. Then we work up a sweat dancing to floor fillers from 90’s rave to recent dance anthems. The routines are easy-to-follow and always have high or low impact options. It’s all about fun, not about perfection. Take it to your level, keep it simple and enjoy the music. What are the benefits of Clubbercise classes? You get to dance to your favourite tracks without a hangover the next day! Dancing in the dark with disco lights and lasers means you can really let go. Dancing with rave glow sticks gives your arms a good work out, you’ll burn around 500 calories in an hour and tone your muscles. Do I need to be an experienced dancer? Definitely not! We deliberately make our routines easy-to-follow so you can relax and enjoy it rather than worrying about getting the steps wrong. What should I wear/bring? No heels! Just trainers and sportswear/streetwear/fitness clothing… something you can dance in... and make sure you bring some water. most effective way of achieving your health and fitness goals.

Thursday 23rd June and Thursday 7th July 7-8 at Bradford & Bingley Sports Club, Wagon Lane 2 launch nights with regular classes from September. Advance booking required as places are limited.

FORWARD THINKING HAIR DESIGN There can’t be many hairdressing salons locally who are as forward thinking as Yazz Number One Hair Studio. Paul Shakeshaft, the owner of the group of salons has always been keen to build the business and move the company forward within the hairdressing industry, ensuring that Yazz is definitely on the map. Paul told us, “We have expanded our business and now have three salons; Rawdon which is our flagship salon and incorporates Yazz Beauty, Yeadon which is based inside DW Sports Fitness Centre (formerly LA Fitness) and Guiseley. We also have Yazz Hairdressing Academy based in Yeadon. We believe education is the key, we employ a full time in-house educator who supports our trainees and keeps our creative team up to date with new techniques and cutting styles. We regularly attend seminars and cutting courses and are frequent visitors to the TIGI Academies in London and Manchester where we are encouraged to be bold with our creativity, inspiring us to move forward and re-evaluate the things we have previously learnt. We come back to the salons with renewed enthusiasm and passion which in turn is passed on to our clientele.”

There’s also a fun side to working at Yazz as they regularly attend fashion shows and charity events and their artistic team are constantly entering competitions with their photo shoot work. They are rightly very proud of their achievements which include: TIGI Retail Hair Salon of the Year Winners, British Hairdressing Business Awards 2 Times Finalists, TIGI Inspiration Youth Team – member for 7 consecutive years, MATRIX Destination Fame 3 times Winners, Clothes Show Live Hair Awards Young Hairdresser of the Year 3 Times Finalist, Gok Wan Clothes Roadshow Official Hair Stylists, The Bradford Bulls Cheerleading Team Official Hairstylists, L’Oreal Colour Trophy Ladies Regional Finalist, L’Oreal Colour Trophy Men’s Regional Finalist, L’Oreal Young Colourist Regional Award Finalist, L’Oreal Young Colourist Award Grand Finalist!

The level of service Paul expects from his team is high, working in an environment where customer service is key and an industry that is highly competitive, however in turn for their commitment, the rewards are amazing and include holidays to exotic locations such as Barbados, Las Vegas, Puerto Banus, Portugal and Italy.

Congratulations to Yazz young Creative Stylist Ashley Wallis who has been selected for the first stage of TIGI Inspirational Youth 2016 and has been invited to attend an Assessment Day in London, see how Ashley gets on by following the Yazz Facebook.

LINTHWAITE HOUSE - LAKE DISTRICT

STAYCATION? Fancy staying closer to home this year? Check our top picks for the homebirds amongst you...

WORLD OF BEATRIX POTTER

W

ith the weather men predicting a great summer ahead for Britain, it is not surprising that many of us will be remaining at “home” this year. Though the term “staycation” was coined in 2009 when recession-hit Brits were driven to ditch overseas holidays in favour of domestic ones, there is a lot to be said for not leaving the country. Think about it: no stressful airports to be negotiated, no worries trying to work out what everything is costing in another currency, no language barriers. Just jump in your car (or board a train) and let the adventure begin.

LAKE WINDERMERE

Let’s face it, most of us have only seen a tiny percentage of this green and pleasant land, so there’s plenty left to explore. What will it be? A spontaneous city break? A long weekend in the countryside? Or even a week-long holiday in one of the prettiest – and more remote – parts of the United Kingdom? The choice is yours – but here are our top three suggestions.

perspective, there’s plenty to do. If you’re feeling lazy, jump on one of the frequent boat tours of the docks, otherwise hire a bike from Cycle the City (www.cyclethecity.org) so that you can stop off en route at the many interesting places to be found in the regenerated Harbourside area. You might want to start at the Bristol Aquarium and At-Bristol, the science museum, before heading over Pero’s Bridge to the contemporary arts centre known as the Arnolfini, with M Shed, the museum for all things Bristol, just over the bridge. Bike a little further into Spike Island to visit the award-winning SS Great Britain, built in Bristol by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and recognised as one of the country’s finest tourist attractions, and Spike Island Artspace, another contemporary art venue. Whatever you do, don’t forget to go and take a look at the Clifton Suspension Bridge, to admire this amazing feat of engineering (another Brunel masterpiece), which has come to be recognised as a symbol of the city. If you’re an art fan, you will probably want to take your bike to follow the Banksy trail (it might be billed as a walking trail, but his masterpieces have become so valuable, they are few and far between these days!). Graffiti is one of Bristol’s most famous exports and Banksy’s works can be found on various walls around the city – pick up a guide to his art from the Bristol tourist information office in the Harbourside, before you set off.

For a city break, we favour Bristol, the eighth most populous city in Britain, with a history as old as the hills. An important starting point for voyages of exploration to the New World from the 15th century, it became a very wealthy city, reflected in the elegant garden squares and terraces dotted around the city. But it’s not resting on past laurels, the city now has a strong creative buzz – think Banksy, think Wallace & Gromit – and there isn’t a weekend in summer when there isn’t a great event or festival taking place. From a sightseeing

If your main interest is shopping, Broadmead and Cabot Circus, much of which are pedestrianised, are home to over 100 shops, including well-known brands such as Reiss, Harvey Nichols, Topshop and House of Fraser. Quirky individual shops can be found on Park Street, which is more of a traditional “High Street”. Don’t miss Visit St Nicholas Market - a cluster of indoor and outdoor markets first built in 1743; it’s full of little treasures, from chilli sauce stalls to amber jewellery and international cuisine

32 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

If the weather is good and it’s too hot to do anything, you might want to spend an afternoon at Bristol’s Lido, which dates to 1849, but fell into disrepair in the early 20th century, before the naturally heated pool was recently restored to its steamy best (with a balmy water temperature of around 24˚C). Spa treatments and massage sessions are also available. In the evenings, various venues offer a wide range of entertainment. The Bristol Old Vic presents plays old and new, while the Bristol Hippodrome specialises in hosting many West End shows; Colstan Hall and St George’s put on music from classical to contemporary, as well as talks and comedy. For art house cinema, head for The Watershed. Always check the Visit Bristol website (www.visitbristol. co.uk) when planning a visit to the city, as it provides information on a wide variety of events taking place, such as the Harbour Festival, the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, Eat Drink Bristol Fashion and Encounters. Even just walking around the city, you’re quite likely to encounter a pop-up show or an open exhibition, such is the creative energy that passes through Bristol. One of the best located hotels in town is The Bristol (www. doylecollection.com/bristol), ideally situated between Bristol’s historic cobbled Narrow Quay and elegant Queen Square, right in the heart of the city’s Harbourside district and within walking distance of all the main attractions. Sit on the terrace of the hotel’s Shore Café Bar, right beside the quayside, with a light breeze and seagulls hovering overhead and you will immediately feel on holiday. But if you prefer a long weekend in the countryside, then the Lake District is the place to go this summer as – even if you have been before – there are a number of unique events taking place this year. 2016 marks 150 years since the birth of Beatrix Potter, one of the world’s best-loved children’s

authors, who was a major landowner and business woman is the region. In celebration, a “Romance and Realism” exhibition is being held at the National Trust’s Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead till the end of October (open daily from 11am to 4.30pm); on display are Beatrix’s original watercolours alongside illustrations that explore the inspiration she found in the natural world just a few steps away. As always, you can visit Potter’s Yew Tree farmhouse in Near Sawrey; this is where she created some of her best-known stories having bought the house in 1905 (funded largely by royalties from her first book, The Tale of Benjamin Bunny). Potter scholars will spot many features from the author’s illustrations – including Mrs Tiggywinkle’s kitchen and Mr MacGregor’s cottage garden. It is open to the public, because it was bequeathed to the National Trust following her death in 1943. Additionally, this year only, there’s a chance to see filming of another favourite children’s book, Swallows and Amazons, in and around the Lake District; filming gets underway on 21 June and will carry on over the summer months. It might even inspire you to have your own rural adventure among some of Britain’s finest scenery, greenest countryside and grandest views: take a boat trip on a lake, climb a fell, get on an electric bike or head for the coast. A good starter fell is Orrest Head, just above Windermere; it’s a short walk and will take no longer than an hour. It’s

BRISTOL AQUARIUM

nice and easy, and well worth it for the views from the top, which stretch right the way down to Windermere and over towards the other fells. In fact, this was the first fell climbed by Alfred Wainwright, the guidebook writer, and it made him fall in love with the Lakes. Those looking for an easier ride might like to jump on an e-bike. There’s a growing electric bike network in the Lake District and it’s a great, eco-friendly way to see a lot of the villages and honeypot locations really quickly, without getting stuck in traffic (yes, the Lake District can be extremely busy in the height of summer). Don’t worry, there are plenty of charging stations along the way, most of which are located at pubs or cafes, so you can stop and “recharge” yourself at the same time! A great place to base yourself in the Lake District is the award-winning Linthwaite House, just outside Windermere, with fantastic views over the Lake. The smallest “cosy” rooms start from £75 per person on a B&B basis or from £117 per person on a half-board basis. Book line at www.linthwaite.com. Our recommendation for a week-long, completely get away from it all week in Britain is Carmarthenshire in South West Wales, one of the most beautiful parts of the country with stunning beaches capable of competing with the best in the world – if only we could guarantee the weather! This summer, the region has a host of new holiday

adventures to entice holidaymakers, such as spending a few days appreciating Welsh wine and food overlooking the vineyard on the edge of the Bluestone Mountains, sampling new seaside pubs and, our favourite, a sleep deep in a luxury bell tent with a classic 2CV to pootle around the country lanes – or should that be down memory lane?! If a proper holiday should be a complete break from the norm then Hanfryn Farm offers this in spades. For a taste of the ‘Good Life’ or as they say in Wales ‘Byw y bywyd braf ’, this organic working farm on the River Teifi farms sheep and cattle so there are delicious burgers and steaks for the barbecue – bonus! The off-grid bell tent living is simple but luxurious with four tents sleeping 4-6 people on raised platforms with views down to the river and four pitches for those who want to bring their own tent. A place to put on your wellies, light a campfire, drink the small batch cider from the farm, collect eggs for breakfast and get back to basics. For the first time in 2016 the farm’s well-loved classic 2CV (‘Son of Herman’) will be available to hire adding another layer of unique holiday nostalgia. ‘Son of Herman’ isn’t just a car, he’s a personality and any day spent floating through the Welsh country lanes with the roof rolled back and the side windows flipped down will provide a wonderful dose of ‘getting away from it all’. Fun to drive, this classic French car has the gearstick on the dashboard, super suspension, four seats and room in the bank for a picnic hamper. A week in a bell tent costs from £375 based on 2 adults and 2 children sharing; camping pitches from £20 per night. Hire of ‘Son of Herman’ £160 per day (must be over 25 years). No matter which path you take, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the surrounding mainland, and to the west you’ll be able to see the impressive outline of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. Old Harbour area With the impressive addition of Harpa - the city’s award winning new concert hall - and a growing number of other interesting places and businesses, the colourful Old Harbour, which was built between the years 1913 and 1917, is fast becoming a new boom area. Apart from it being a beautiful place to walk with stunning views across the bay to Mount Esja, the Old Harbour area is where the majority of marine activities, such as whale watching and puffin tours are concentrated. The numerous new businesses being established, offering everything from scooter rides to the city’s best dark-roasted coffee, are testament to the wonderful community spirit responsible for generating the success of the Old Harbour and reestablishing it as a new vibrant quarter of Reykjavík City. Whale Watching The ocean around Iceland is a natural habitat for many different types of whales. Commonly sighted on whale-watching tours from Reykjavik are

Minke whales, White-beaked dolphins, harbour porpoises and Humpback whales. Don’t miss out on an unforgettable experience with up close encounter with some of the world’s largest and magnificent animals. Downtown Reykjavik Downtown Reykjavik has an astounding variety of restaurants offering both traditional and international cuisine cooked using the finest ingredients. The pride of Icelandic cuisine is the fresh fish and the delicious lamb, which we cheerfully claim to be one of the best in the world. For the best shopping experience in Reykjavík we recommend you hit the downtown area of the city which is where most of the shops and boutiques are concentrated. A wander around the city’s famous shopping streets of Laugavegur and Skólavörðustígur will lead you to some gorgeous little boutiques and charming shops where you’re sure to discover fashion treasures ranging from the ultra-modern and concept -driven to vintage classics from the golden era. Hallgrimskirkja, ¬the Church of Hallgrimur, ¬is a national monument, dedicated to the most renowned sacred poet of Iceland, Hallgrimur Petursson. The church features, most notably, a gargantuan pipe organ designed and constructed by the German organ builder Johannes Klais of Bonn. City Cycling If you are an outdoor type, your visit to Reykjavik is incomplete without experiencing the city by bicycle. From the city centre to the greener parts and picturesque views of the mountains and the sea – you will take in some of the most important sights of Reykjavik on one of many theme based bicycle trails found in the greater Reykjavik area. The secret most people do not know about Reykjavik are the beautiful cycling routes into nature within the city that bring you to places not reachable by car. Perlan – Öskjuhlíð Take in some epic panoramic views of the city by visiting attractive landmark building The Pearl; while you’re there you can also wander through the enchanting woodlands of Öskjuhlíð in the surrounding area. As well as making a splash in the remarkable thermally heated waters of Nauthólsvík beach – if you’re brave enough you can join the seasoned seaswimmers for a cooler dip in the Atlantic too. Mt. Esja Dominating dramatically the Reykjavík city skyline and providing a stunning backdrop to the capital area is the impressive Mount Esja, a popular destination for day-trippers and riddled with well-worn hiking trails. Once surmounted, the view from the top of this 914 metre high mountain is breath-taking. Approximately 200 from the top, there’s a point marked with a big rock called “Steinn”. Most inexperienced climbers choose to stop here and take in the view before going down again, as the path becomes increasingly difficult from there on. If you do get to the top, don’t forget to sign the guestbook. For more information contact www.visitreykjavik.is hnmagazine.co.uk | 37

EXOTIC SHORES H&N travel expert, Sue Heady, explores Central & Southern America

As has already been widely reported in national newspapers, there has been a significant spike in British tourists opting for “safer” holiday destinations this year, as terrorist attacks in north Africa and mainland Europe continue to unsettle the travel industry. Many are seeing it as an opportunity to step outside their comfort zone and explore different parts of the world they might never have considered before, with South American and South Africa (helped by a weak Rand) seeing a significant increase in bookings. Here we round-up the latest openings and offerings from some of the more exotic far-flung destinations, which are tempting Brits abroad.

lodge and time on the beach. This new itinerary costs from £3,925 per person for a 16 day trip, including all accommodation (10 nights B&B + 4 nights full board), transfers and return international flights, based on two sharing for travel till the end of September.

deco features have also been brought back to their former glory. Luciano K’s 38 rooms are priced between £130 (standard) and £262 (suite) per night based on two people sharing on a B&B basis. All rooms come with free Wi-Fi.

Vila Santa Teresa is a new seven bedroom boutique guesthouse opening this month set within the private estate of the Monteiro de Carvalhos family, in Brazil’s party capital, Rio de Janeiro. With incredible views over the city and across to Sugar Loaf from the swimming pool and deck, guests will be welcomed as friends of the family and invited to treat the place as home. In contrast to Rio’s large beachside hotels, Vila Santa Teresa will offer a new experience to the luxury market - small, discreet, authentic, elegant simplicity executed to the highest level by a local family with the highest standards. Intimate dinners can be set up in secluded spots around the property and the glitz and glamour of Copacabana and Ipanema are just a short drive down the hill.

British Airways’ new direct flight from Gatwick into Costa Rica’s San Jose airport has resulted in a huge surge of bookings during the ‘green season’ (up to September this year). Tailor-made travel experts Last Frontiers has launched a new Costa Rica itinerary incorporating the new BA flights and focussing on the central and south east of the country, taking advantage of low season special offers. The journey begins with a short hop from the airport into coffee country and a 2 night stay at Rosa Blanca then 4 nights at the new luxury mountain spa resort of Alta Gracia (boasting the largest spa in Central America), as well as 4 nights full board at Lapa Rions jungle

In Chile, one of Santiago’s favourite buildings has risen from the ashes in Barrio Lastarria as the fully restored 38 room boutique Hotel Luciano K. Named after the cult Chilean architect Luciano Kulczewski who designed this architectural gem, the brand new hotel has more than a touch of “Ghostbusters” about it, originally constructed as an art deco style apartment block with a locally loved gargoyle leaning down from the roof. Historically known as La Gargola, the building was once the tallest in Chile and the first to have central heating and an elevator. The hotel’s sympathetic restoration showcases the original elevator ‘capsule’, original marble staircases, tiles, wooden doors and Luciano Kulczewski’s signature art

In Peru, one of the most anticipated new hotel openings happens in July 2016, when the Explora Valle Sagrado, set within an old corn hacienda in the Sacred Valley of the Inca’s near Cusco, is launched. Explora are well-established in South America with spectacular hotels in Chile’s Torres del Paine, the Atacama Desert and Easter Island. At each property, guests have all meals and drinks included and guided excursions in small groups. There will be 50 rooms at the Peru property and as with all Explora hotels the emphasis is on understated luxury, sustainability and ultimate respect for the nature around. At a lower altitude of around 3,000m (600 m below Cusco) the effects of altitude are decreased – enjoy more oxygen and uninterrupted views of the mountains and cornfields! The spa, with hot tubs, outdoor swimming pool, massage rooms, steam and sauna will open in September. Hiking and cycling options can be combined with the obligatory day or overnight visit to Machu Picchu (2.5 hours on the train). Doubles start from £1,320 per person for 3 nights or for honeymooners £890 per person for 3 nights.

The stunning pre-Inca City of Kuelap (three times as old as Machu Piccu) is located at 3,000m in the cloud forest of Northern Peru and has been bubbling under the radar as the next Machu Picchu. Looking a little bit further ahead, to 2017, Polar Latitudes have just announced they will be operating a second Shackleton Centenary cruise due to the popularity of the existing cruise. Shackleton Centenary celebrations started back on 8th August 2014, which marked 100 years since Endurance set sail from Plymouth. Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial TransAntarctic Expedition, also known as the Endurance Expedition, lasted three years, hence the ongoing celebrations into 2017. The new date sees the newly renovated Hebridean Sky depart from Ushuaia on the 23rd February 2017 for a 19 night voyage. Guests will visit the legendary Elephant Island where the Endurance beached, and will hear from a host of exciting guest speakers including explorer Seb Coulthard, who served as ship engineer in a 2013 replication of the voyage, before finishing with a trip through the famed Drake Passage. The 25 night trip - based on two people travelling together and sharing a porthole suite for 19 nights, including all meals, and excursions whilst on board, as well as international flights from the UK and pre (2 nights) and post (1 night) cruise accommodation in Buenos Aires, a night in Ushuaia and transfers will cost in the region of £13,500 per person, but is undoubtedly a once in a lifetime opportunity! Also next year, British Airways will launch a new direct flight between Heathrow and the Chilean capital of Santiago de Chile in early January and Last Frontiers is putting together a new ‘ultimate long weekend away’ to the Chilean capital priced from £1,295 per

person, including return flights, transfers, bed and breakfast accommodation, a guided city tour and private cookery class, based on 2 people. On the new ‘ultimate long weekend’ trip, travellers will take the 22.00 flight on Friday and arrive at 9.40am (local time) on Saturday ready to enjoy a packed few days of fun, before leaving at 18.45 on the Monday evening, returning to Heathrow at 12.05 on the Tuesday, so travellers can be back to their desks for the afternoon! A good way to gain bragging rights! Meanwhile, over in South Africa, all eyes are on the opening of Leeu Collection’s flagship property, Leeu Estates, which will open in Franschhoek, the country’s gourmet capital, on 15 June, offering the ultimate luxury wineland experience. Leeu Collection has already created quite a stir in the Franschhoek Valley, acquiring Le Quartier Francais with its world-famous Tasting Room restaurant last September and opening Leeu House in December. Located between the mountainside and river, just minutes from the picturesque village of Franschhoek, the exclusive five-star Estate provides the ideal setting for an elegant and sophisticated private getaway. The hotel has 17 well-appointed rooms, suites and cottages and takes central position on 68 hectares of vineyards, landscaped gardens and fynbos (indigenous vegetation). At the centre of this working wine farm is the meticulously refurbished 19th-century Manor House with its six rooms and suites. An additional two rooms are located adjacent to The Manor House, while the remaining rooms, suites and cottages are dotted amongst the gardens, oak trees and lush vineyards.

Rooms feature carefully curated artwork and sculptures from various countries, luxurious extras and superbly equipped marble bathrooms. Many have their own terraces and fireplaces, which may come in handy in the evenings – our summer is their winter after all! For guests travelling as a family or with friends, an entire cottage comprising two or three bedrooms with private living areas may also be booked. Delicious, innovative cuisine is on offer and handcrafted premium wines from the award-winning Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines may also be sampled at the boutique tasting venue, The Wine Studio, which is located on the Estate – one complimentary tasting session per guest per stay. For those seeking wellness options, the Leeu Spa offers expert massage and holistic treatments inspired by centuries-old Asian traditions, while a 15-metre heated infinity swimming pool and TechnoGym-equipped fitness centre cater to more active guests. THE WEEKENDER H&N Editor Angela takes a midweek retreat in Helmsley...

What makes the perfect weekend retreat? Well I guess that looks different to different people, but pair an idyllic location with a hotel full of depth and character and an award winning restaurant and I think this is the recipe for the perfect weekend break in anyone’s books! The location is Helmsley, the only market town in the North York Moors National Park. Lying on the southern edge of the Moors and nestling on the River Rye, the town is steeped in history, with its mellow stone buildings and red pantile roofs... Helmsely can track its history back to the first settlement in 3000BC. Many of the existing buildings in the town date from the 17th Century, so history is everywhere, combining a traditional look with everything a modern visitor would want. special which you just can’t resist. Helmsley is the current holder of the title of Best Market Town in the Great British High Street Awards – a fact they are very proud of! The hotel is The Black Swan, a four star country boutique hotel with 45 individual bedrooms. Long established as a coaching inn since the 15th century and as a hotel since the 18th century, every room depicts a feeling of times gone by through its many original features including a huge open log fire in the lounge, exposed beams and wonderful creaking floors. We were invited to The Black Swan Hotel in Helmsley to try the stunning new tasting menu designed by newly appointed, award winning chef, Alan O’Kane, who brings his wealth of culinary experience and passion to the role. Alan’s early career were spent in London, initially at The Savoy and later, at The Capital, where his classic culinary skills were honed. Alan’s style of cooking and professional experience complements The Black Swan’s 3AA rosette restaurant. His individual style is essentially Classical/Modern British; simplicity is the key; just a few choice ingredients with big, bold flavour combinations.

Our expectations were high and I am going to confirm at this early stage that our dining experience that evening ranks as one of the very best we have had. Alan’s tasting menu was a journey to savour. We started with snacks in the lounge which included Confit of lamb beignet, mint puree; White onion and 36 month aged parmesan veloute with a black truffle toasty and wonderful House smoked salmon and caviar cones. Simply delicious. Following snacks, we were shown to our table in The Gallery Restaurant and served Ham knuckle and fois gras, served with celeriac remoulade, caper jam, peas pudding and quail egg. Then came a beautiful dish of Black bream, with mussels and clams, fresh beans and sea herbs. However, the best was yet to come; Raw Scottish venison with burnt orange, smoked coconut, beetroot emulsion and yolk…genius. Each course surpassed the previous one all conversation stopped as soon as a course was served, the only audible sounds were those for the appreciation of how good this menu was.

Next we were served Greshingham duck with corn, sweet potato, shitake, Tosazu sea lettuce and peanut. These flavours were powerful, memorable and just fantastic! The dessert courses comprised of Buffalo ricotta cheesecake, calamansi, passion fruit curd and pistachio and then Bitter chocolate namelaka with spiced espresso cake and milk sorbet. Perfect sweet endings to an exceptional menu.

Their charming tea rooms also serve traditional afternoon teas, light meals and snacks. That’s why we chose the market town of Helmsley and The Black Swan to highlight as our ‘Weekender’ in this edition of H&N. This really is the perfect place for a day trip or weekend away – as a ‘small’ market town, new visitors are often surprised by how much it has to offer!

Speaking to Paul O’Hanlon, Hotel General Manager about Alan’s appointment, he told us, “It’s fantastic having Alan on board, he’s already making his mark and we’re now in safe hands to take our dining experience at The Black Swan to even greater heights. Not only do we have a brilliant chef, he’s so generous with his time and knowledge, sharing some of his top tips with the up and coming talent in the kitchen, there’s a real buzz about the place!”

With its characterful Market Place, historic architecture, a wide range of quality independent shops, and an excellent selection of accommodation, pubs, cafes and restaurants, many of which are award-winning, Helmsley is popular with tourists and locals alike. There are plenty of interesting activities and attractions available on the doorstep including Helmsley Castle, Rievaulx Abbey, Duncombe Park and the town’s historic Walled Gardens, which date back to 1759.

The Gallery Restaurant welcomes diners, residents and non-residents alike, who can enjoy the ambience of the light and airy space with its stylish modern décor, adorned with one of the finest collections of original works of art in the area courtesy of the Helmsely Galleries.

The National Centre for Birds of Prey opened at Duncombe Park in 2013, and offers the chance to see some magnificent and rare birds in action. Helmsley Castle is well worth a visit and is just a short walk from the town centre. Experience 900 years of history, discovering

how the castle evolved over the centuries from a mighty medieval fortress to a luxurious Tudor mansion, and then a Civil War stronghold and a romantic Victorian ruin. If you like to get active Helmsley also marks the start of the Cleveland Way, which is popular with walkers and loops round the National Park to end up at the coast near Filey. There’s also has an open air pool available over the summer months – the perfect way to cool down on a sunny day! Art lovers are well catered for with some of the region’s best galleries based here, including the Saltbox Gallery, The Look Gallery, Lazenby Visuals & Framing and Helmsley Galleries. Similarly antique lovers will be spoilt for choice with gems to be found at Antiques and Interiors and Bondgate Antiques. For reservations Tel: 01439 770466 or visit www.blackswan-helmsley.co.uk. HOT PROPERTY Philippa Cambers, founder of homewares marketplace TheMakerPlace.co.uk takes a closer look at this season’s hottest interior design trends

As the temperatures rise, it’s natural to want to make the most of the longer days and reflect the mood of the season in our homes and gardens, so it’s great news that this year’s hottest interior design trends are geared towards creating light, bright, summery decorating schemes. Here are our top tips for how to bring the outside in this summer, with looks that will help to capture that easy, breezy summery feeling all year long! Perfectly Pastel In late 2015, global colour experts Pantone picked two pastel-hued tones as their colours of 2016, Rose Quartz and Serenity Blue and before long the high street was filled with homeware and furnishings in pretty pastel shades. Whether you’re a long-term lover of candy colours, or a devotee to shades of grey, as the range of pastel-toned pieces available continues to grow, it’s hard not to fall for its charms. Maybe it’s because these colours actually do work so well with grey and other neutrals that we find it easy to see how we can add touches of pretty colour to our homes. Warm-toned pale pink in particular can add a beautiful softness and sense of light to a space and whether you choose to include a few choice accessories or go for it with a wash of pale blush pink on walls or soft furnishings, it can be an easy and quick way to update.

Coastal Chic Although it is true that coastal inspired design is a classic look that has never really gone out of style, this year in particular we’ve seen a greater range of coastal accessories and furnishings coming onto the high street and a great way to bring this look up-to-date is to add soft grey into the blue and white colourmix. Whether you’re dreaming of holidays to come or remembering seaside getaways gone-by, capturing the feeling of being on holiday all year round in your home isn’t difficult to achieve. The addition of some accessories inspired 46 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

by the sea, combined with a white-washed colour scheme can bring a dash of Hampton’s beach-house chic to any space. Try layering shades of blue with pale greys, white and textiles in seaside stripes. To keep your space as light and bright as possible, try a white background with largely white, pale blue or palegrey accessories and touches of deeper blue and white to evoke that seaside feel. The trick to making this look work well is to be selective in your choice of accessories; less is more if you want to avoid the ‘themed’ look!

Easy-Going Outdoor Entertaining And…relax! What better time of year to get together with friends and family, open a bottle or two of something chilled and serve a delicious al fresco meal to enjoy the best of the year’s weather. For entertaining at any time of the year, we love the relaxed look that handmade ceramics and serving ware can bring to a table setting and one or two hand-thrown pieces can really add that extra special touch to any lunch or dinner party. Handcrafted homeware is another growing trend for interiors (and one to watch for 2017) and by buying unique handcrafted, yet stylish pieces, you’re really investing in quality that is made to last. If you choose neutral, classic tableware, then you can build a collection of pieces that you’ll really love and that will work well for you whatever the occasion. For a summer party, try serving cheeses or tapas on an unusual serving board or platter or serve a large mixed salad in a big bowl with serving spoons so that guests can dive in and help themselves. Soft table linens in muted shades of pale pink, to tie-in with a pastel scheme, or crisp blue and white for a coastal look, can be a great way to tie-in your entertaining space with the rest of your décor as well. All in all, the look to go for is easy going, so your guests know they can relax, but thoughtfully pulled-together enough to show that you’ve made the extra effort to welcome them!

Scandinavian Style While the popularity of Scandinavian style isn’t a new phenomenon, when it celebrates the best of modern, functional design, means, light and bright interiors with interesting textures and a healthy dose of natural materials, we

can’t help but continue to sing its praises! If you haven’t already embraced some elements of Scandinavian inspired style in your home, now is the perfect time to do so. This is a trend that’s not going away. The enduring popularity of classic Scandinavian furniture design proves its timeless appeal. Even better, it’s really easy to achieve. The key elements; functional, minimally styled furniture in light beech or oak, a pale colour scheme (but do use colour in boldly-printed textiles and framed prints) and the use of lovely natural materials and motifs. The overall effect is light, bright and harmonious. For ideas of where to source your Scandi-style pieces, you could of course do worse than a quick trip to Ikea and blending some of their pieces with some more unique finds such as a modernclassic piece from a specific designer, like this beautiful bench from ByALEX, can be a great way to get an individual look that doesn’t cost the earth. What we especially love about Scandinavian style, especially if you have kids or just lots of stuff to organise, is how practical it can be and one of our favourite modern pieces of furniture is the Scandinavian style peg-board, which provides the perfect way to store clutter in an interesting and visually appealing way!

Bring The Outside In One of the biggest trends we’re seeing at the moment is for homeware and interiors that conjure the spirit of the great outdoors. Whether it’s beautiful floral patterns or designs featuring fresh foliage, anything that helps to bring the outside into our homes sounds like a good idea to us and helps to prolong that fresh summery feeling beyond these few fleeting months of sunshine! It’s a look

which also ties in perfectly with Scandinavian schemes, using natural textures and colours for a fresh and airy home. House plants are also enjoying a revival, and gathering together some small pots planted with mini-succulents on your windowsill (which are so easy to keep and don’t need watering every day!) is guaranteed to put a smile on your face, even on a cloudy day! We love the fact that the colour green is so serene and can add a calming influence. Pale green also works well with pastel pink and when the two are combined, you have a colour-scheme that captures the beauty of a garden in full bloom. To complete the look, we love boldly patterned cushions and textiles; perfect all year round for adding a quick injection of colour and texture to your home and layering cushions in fresh-foliage greens is a very quick way to stay on trend. One thing all of these styles have in common is that they celebrate and maximise the light and any tricks or ideas which can add that feeling of light and space to your home will endure well past the end of the season and help to bring a touch of summer to your home that will last all the way into autumn and beyond. Philippa Cambers is founder of interiors marketplace TheMakerPlace. co.uk which showcases the very best homeware, furniture and prints from some of the UK’s best designers and makers. You can discover the story behind each unique item and buy directly from the maker. The pieces shown in this feature are all available from TheMakerPlace.co.uk

Back to Matt Pulling off the Matt Paint Trend – it’s easier than you think... YOU’VE HEARD IT TIME AND AGAIN: PAINT IS ONE OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE AND BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO DRAMATICALLY TRANSFORM A SPACE, WHETHER YOU’RE TRYING TO MAKE IT LOOK BIGGER, DISPLAY YOUR ARTWORK, OR FLATTER EVERYTHING IN THE ROOM. BUT SELECTING THE RIGHT HUE IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.

I

n addition to the paint color, the finish can be just as crucial in setting the tone for your space. We encourage you to embrace the matt paint trend, layering various finishes within a room add dimension to any space and teamed with the latest semi-gloss, any room is quickly transformed. Thanks to the advanced technology in premium paints, matte finishes are now as durable as semi-gloss finishes and can even be used in humid areas. The added bonus of using matte paints in high traffic areas? They’re extremely forgiving. A wall with nicks or bumps would reflect light and expose the imperfections, but matte finishes can mask those pesky marks and make the wall appear much smoother and mark-free. The soft, rich look of matte paint makes it perfect for plush sitting rooms and dreamy bedrooms, noting that the velvety finish especially highlights artwork and wall decor. Polished fixtures and metallics really pop against a matte backdrop and the flat finish provides a contrast to the glossy surface of picture frames, bringing an added elegance to a gallery wall. Matte paints are very high in pigment, meaning you’ll get full coverage no matter which color you choose. You should go bold when it comes to selecting a hue. Whereas a glossy sheen can make a bold colour appear a bit too harsh or gaudy, a matte finish has an almost chalky appearance that

50 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

softens bold colours, so you can dare to go dark with blacks, deep purples, charcoals, bold reds or navy blues for a feel that’s rich but comfortable. Play with stripes to create a unique illusion and contrast that draws the eyes to the wall. For a monochromatic look, try painting stripes of the same color but varying finishes, such as semi-gloss and matte. Although the colours are the same, the two different finishes will make it appear as if they’re two different shades. For a more dramatic look, vary the finish and the colour. Try glossy white stripes against a matte black for a fun and bold ‘sleek vs suede’ look. If you’d rather play it safe, you can experiment on doors and trims. Using a matte finish on trims and doors will create a silky and elegant contrast against walls that have a slight sheen, dark matte trim and doors against light walls will create an especially striking look that’s unexpected, while colorful walls with a white matte trim can modernise a space. If you’re not sure; the best way to decide what you like and what you think would look great in your own home? Visit the show homes in your area, this is a great way to see what’s trending in decorating and interior design and you are sure to pick up a few ideas to take away with you. Take photographs of the ideas you like to remind you and enjoy breathing new life in to your home.

H&N talks ‘Style & Interiors’ with W illiam & Vicky Golding of The Carriage Homeware & Beds, Burley in Wharfedale

B

ack in February this year, husband and wife team William and Vicky Golding took ownership of the long established local business, World of Beds in their home village of Burley In Wharfedale. William was formerly joint owner of Taylor Golding Kitchens and Bathrooms based at Greenholme Mills in the village, and Vicky, a Chartered Accountant advising businesses on all aspects of running and growing their businesses, set to work turning this already well known and respected bed shop into something more than that. Five months on they are now nearing the end of the first stages of that process and are ready to launch ‘the carriage’.

“Ensuring that people get a good range of quality beds to try within these ranges as well as other brands at all budget levels is our focus. We’ve moved a lot of this stock upstairs in the premises so that people can try without feeling they are being watched from the street, ensuring that they have the time to consider all the options which is important when you are making this type of purchase. Once a bed has been chosen and ordered the next step is ensuring that the bed gets delivered when it’s convenient for the customer. We will always deliver the bed on a day and at a time to suit them, not the other way round, delivery is free of charge (within the local area) and beds are assembled in the right room, not left in the hallway! We will also arrange to take away the customers old bed and mattress should they need it.”

They took over the 3,000 square foot premises, spread over 2 floors and now boasts a freshly decorated interior and exterior, brand new ranges from the existing premium bed brands Somnus and Hypnos, as well as introduction of new brands including the Hilary Devey bed range. In addition, there is a new emphasis on interiors including mirrors, lighting, premium brand candles from The Harrogate Candle Company and bedding and soft furnishings to complement the existing offering.

“Combining excellent service with the new interiors offering, where people can buy from stock on the shop floor on the day, or order from an extensive catalogue for delivery or collection later, we are aiming to offer a high quality, allround experience for the customer that they will enjoy. We are now open 7 days a week and will also open outside of ‘normal’ opening times by appointment if people would prefer to view privately. This again is aimed at helping the customer get what they need, when they want it, not just at the times we dictate.”

“Our number one priority through all of this is to offer outstanding service levels. Retail, particularly in the home interiors sector is highly competitive and we have to stand out from the crowd, especially with internet competition”. Having advised many owner - managed businesses in her former role at Sagars Accountants in Leeds, Vicky is acutely aware of what makes a successful business stand out from the rest. “The quality of our product speaks for itself, Somnus and Hypnos in particular are national quality brands that people know and trust and we need to make the experience of choosing, buying and having that bed delivered the best that it can be and that’s what we are concentrating on.”

People who have recently driven past the premises on Main Street in the centre of the village will have also noticed that there is a kitchen and fitted bedroom display in the front annex of the building. This is the next stage of the project being developed, based on the many years of experience built up by William in his previous successful business venture. Ultimately they are aiming for ‘the carriage’ to be the go-to place, not just for beds and interiors but also for luxury fitted kitchens and bedroom furniture – a one-stop shop for all your home interior needs.

Seven Steps in Pudsey, built on experience, crafted with passion! Well Let me introduce you to Seven Steps Bar and Restaurant in Pudsey. A collaboration between creative directors, Will Crawshaw (Mixologist/Manager), and Joe Crowe (Head Chef), who between them have over 20 years’ experience in the industry, experience they have used to create an amazing bar and eatery, one we found so good it rivals anywhere in Leeds, and that’s saying something! Will and Joe were head hunted by owner and local business man, Neil Crampton and it’s easy to see why. From the minute you set foot inside Seven Steps with its cool yet rustic décor, it’s a place you feel you want to be. Greeted warmly by Will, he offered to make us cocktails from his selection of specially crafted recipes. Spoilt for choice from his extensive menu we chose Pornstar No 2; vanilla, vodka, passion fruit liqueur, pomegranate liqueur, lemon and vanilla bitters served with a shot of prosecco…wow! I could have drunk nothing else all night, what a recipe. My husband, Dave chose Pomegranate Sours; vodka, pomegranate liqueur, fresh lemon juice, grenadine and egg white, drizzled in peach bitters. Superb, ticked all the boxes! Nibbles were the chefs homemade chorizo popcorn and mixed spiced vegetable crisps, great idea to sell them, we had to take some home with us they were so good. Now, when I tell you that the menu was the smallest, shortest selection of dishes we have ever seen in a restaurant, you will immediately think this is a criticism…wrong! Six starters, six mains and a grill selection, and every single dish on that menu sounded extraordinary and we wanted to try them all. Eventually we decided on Pan Seared King Scallops served with squash, chorizo, apple and chorizo popcorn and Smoked Ham Scotch Egg with onion, cranberry and straw potato. Joe Crowe, you are a genius. These plates were simply stunning, they not only looked stunning, the flavours were a taste sensation. Bring on the mains. For me, Pan Fried Bream with crab risotto, chilli, spring onion and coriander and for Dave, Cannon of Hogget, herb gnocchi, squash, kale and red wine. The bream just melted in my mouth it was perfectly cooked and 56 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

the crab risotto with its chilli kick was the perfect flavour combination. The lamb was served pink, just how we like it and cut through like butter, the herb gnocchi was beautifully seasoned and complemented the hogget creating a lovely fusion of flavours. At this point I’ll tell you there’s no salt and pepper on the tables and this always strikes fear in to Dave as he loves his seasoning, but every single plate that was put in front of us was seasoned to perfection, no need to ask for the salt and pepper pots here. There was no way we were leaving without desserts; my new favourite was on the menu but with Joe’s perfect twist – Baked Alaska with fudge brownie baked into it along with vanilla ice cream and salted caramel. I’ve actually run out of words, let me just say that this was not being shared. The lady on the next table seemed to have the same reaction as her partner tried to steal a spoonful of her Baked Alaska, she slapped his hand away! Dave’s Valrhona Dark Chocolate Torte with raspberry, popping candy and honeycomb seemed just as big a hit and our conversation dried up completely while we savoured these magical desserts. Oh did I mention Will’s palate cleansing gin and raspberry shots we had after our starters? Genius. Guess where our new favourite restaurant and cocktail bar is! Seven Steps in Pudsey is such a find and you can definitely make a whole evening of it, just make sure you get a taxi and enjoy to the full the dining experience that Will and Joe have created. We booked for Sunday lunch before we left. There’s a new king in town. Reviewed by Angela Riches, June 2016

authentic French flavours, guided by the seasons and served ‘chez nous ‘. When you dine at a restaurant owned by Raymond Blanc, you expect an experience. Having never been to Brasserie Blanc in Leeds we were excited to be going and being massive fans of Raymond and his style of cooking, our expectations were high, so were they met? One of the world’s most respected chefs, Raymond Blanc is totally self-taught. His story began in Besancon, the capital of the French-Comte region in eastern France, between Burgundy and the Jura mountains, where Raymond was born. He was inspired by the local terroir, and most of all by his mother, the formidable Maman Blanc who used fresh, local and seasonal produce to create meals for the family: wholesome meals full of goodness and love! With this knowledge in hand, we expected great seasonal ingredients, bursting with colour and bold flavour combinations and we were not to be disappointed! The first thing we noticed when we arrived was the size of the restaurant, it looks quite small from the outside but once inside it’s a huge room and what a vibe! It was only 6.45pm and it was absolutely buzzing. Busy with the happiest diners I have ever seen, there were families, couples, groups of friends and work colleagues and every single table was having such a good time. Whatever it was we wanted some of it! We were greeted by a very pleasant and knowledgeable waiter who seated us, he made us feel like old friends that he was really pleased to see, we felt important from the moment we set foot inside the door. He explained the menu options and took our drinks order while we perused the menus and decided what we would like. He was just so relaxed, chatty and smiley, his customer skills were outrageously good and if this level of service it is the norm, it was easy to see why every diner was so happy. The aromas wafting through the restaurant every time someone sat close by received their food were amazing and the dishes looked fantastic; seeing so many things coming out of the kitchen certainly helped with our choices. For our entrees I chose the Cheese Souffle with a mature cheddar cheese sauce. I saw this being served to another diner and immediately knew that was the starter for me and Wow! Light, full of flavour and with the sauce served separately in a tiny jug I could have as much or as little as I wanted…I used it all, it was delicious. My husband decided to have the Steak Tartare, free range Cornish beef, egg yolk, herbs and sourdough bread. This is a dish we both love and it was perfectly portioned, full of flavour, light and extremely fresh as this dish, served raw, should be. Another winner. 58 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

For our mains I had Lamb Cutlets and Moroccan Vegetables, served with yellow split peas, toasted almond and apricot couscous. Ten out of ten. Beautifully cooked cutlets, pink as I like them and melt in the mouth meat perfectly complemented by the fruity couscous, I absolutely loved this dish. The Boeuf Bourginion with red wine, lardons, baby onions, mushrooms and a smooth mash was not such a hit. The lardons were quite heavily smoked and my husband was not a fan, I on the other hand loved the smoky flavour and it is definitely a dish I would choose on a return visit. I thought the only fair thing to do was swop half way through and he was happy again. We had our favourite side dishes of Dauphinoise Potatoes and Chantenay Carrots and there was a brilliant wine offer which we thought was a great way to tempt diners to try a more expensive wine. There was a white and a red wine from the more expensive selections available at a discounted price and we chose to have a bottle of the red which was just superb. Good to know they do this on a regular basis as excellent food deserves a comparative wine and it was just another of the wow factors we experienced during our visit. Dessert had to be the Baked Alaska for Two, flambéed with Cointreau! Oh my goodness what a treat. This meal could only be topped by the most perfect Espresso Martinis, we ordered them and they were made and presented by Jon the assistant manager who had heard that we love this drink after a meal. He wanted to know how they compared on our scoring chart and he was ecstatic to hear they actually were the best we have had to date. You would have thought he had won Masterchef he was so pleased. What a brilliant night, what a superb restaurant. Can’t wait to return. There’s a quote on their website which we think sums up our Brasserie Blanc experience: “There is great beauty in honest food, cooked with heart, using kitchen wisdom passed down through the generations. And as Maman Blanc passed her knowledge and love of food to Raymond, so he passes it on to us, his team, to share with our brasserie families, and you, our guests.” Take it from us…job well done! anybody who is somebody, has got to love mr nobody....

Well I certainly did! The lovechild of three passionate people - self professed food and drink geeks actually, who wanted to create somewhere that is really exciting and interesting, but informal and fun; that’s inclusive and definitely not exclusive, and a place that can be everything to everyone - is that possible?

Well I imagine it could be yes. I could certainly go there for just a drink with friends, I could go for a casual feed, a couple of cocktails, a blow out celebration or very special occasion - you don’t get that in many places do you? How do they do it? Well if I knew, I’m possibly in the wrong game, however, I do suspect that the attention to detail, the style of venue and the absolute know how in the kitchen (and on the bar), could have a huge amount to do with it.... So it’s brand new on the Leeds foodie scene, and lets face it, we are spoilt rotten with places to wine and dine in the city centre and its surrounding areas, so in a highly saturated and fiercely competitive marketplace, can this new kid on the block survive? Well, if their hospitality and know how are anything to go by, it’s a resounding yes from me. I was invited to dine at the Chefs Table a few weeks back, always an incredible honour and most exciting as the evening promised to showcase their unique and diverse menu. We started the evening with some sharing boards, a fine selection of cheeses and meats along with sourdough bread, gigante olives and smoked almonds - which are literally addictive! I love this kind of dining and it woud be perfectly suited to a spot of lunch or a few nibbly bits whilst out for drinks. There are plenty of ‘Little Snacks’ (Pork Spare Rib Dim Sum, Long Horn Salt Beef Tongue, Frogs Legs, Black Leg Chicken Terrine) as examples or ‘Small Plates’ (Stonebass Fish & Scraps, Smoked Salmon salad, Flank of Royal Estate Beef, Free Range Pork Belly to name but a few) to choose from. With dish prices starting at just £2.50, besides offering so much choice, these guys aren’t having your leg off for the pleasure! The Chef (and co-owner), John Farrar boasts a pretty impressive resume and quite incredibly can list no less than 11 Michelin starred restaurants as previous employers! 60 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

He has clearly inplemented this combination of product knowledge, quality ingredient sourcing and flair for unique taste combinations into the menu. After enjoying the sharing boards and a couple of their rather potant signature cocktails and wine and beer and rum......sorry I digress, we were led downstairs to continue the party (which it has now turned into). Cue more tasty and immaculately presented dishes, wine and cocktails… We were pretty lucky, literally most of the dishes on the menu were there for us to try. From the Pork Spare Rib Dim Sum (£4.50) : Slow braised Jimmy Butlers award winning pork in a soy broth to the Long Horn Salt Beef Tongue (£4) with Heritage yukon gold potato cake and the Free Range Pork Belly (£8) with Sweet and sour, pineapple & Sauternes. Honestly? I’m not that keen on belly pork on the whole, but the rest of our party literally swooned at this particular offering and my neighbouring guest was certainly over the moon I hadn’t finished mine! My favourite dish by a country mile was the Dim Sum, but everything we were offered was actually delightful. I loved Mr Nobody, I think they have found a way to effortlessly offer a combination of drinking/dining experiences without any disconnect. It is succesfully encapsulates everything you would like from a high end restaurant (without the high end price tags), and from a glamorous cocktail bar (without the pretentions). The unique style of small plate dining really appeals to me, from trying a couple of dishes with a drink, to booking a large celebration and ordering literally everything on the menu to share with your nearest and dearest. I also must mention, as an independent, there is no hidden hiarachy, the people running the show are there and their comittment, passion and attention to detail shines through across all facts of this place. So if you are somebody, then surely you need to know Mr. Nobody? Highly recommended, tell them I sent you..... Reviewed by Joanne Brook-Smith, April 2016

Fat & sugar free ice cream?

WHEY HEY

We at H&N particularly enjoy Wheyhey as it tastes just as good, if not better than some of the other sugary alternatives and is the perfect pre or post-workout treat. When returning from the gym or exercise class, its an exciting change to mundane protein shakes or bars, which can prove tedious to enjoy during the summer months. Instead a pot of Wheyhey, fresh from the freezer goes down a treat with its creamy texture, and with a variety of flavours, no day is the same as the next.

A

t H&N, we are always looking to indulge in delicious treats, but during the summertime, it is not always so easy with our beach bodies constantly in the back of our minds and supertoned images of celebrities splashed across every newspaper and magazine. Thankfully, we have discovered Wheyhey, the worlds first fat-free, sugar-free and protein filled ice cream, designed to provide a healthy snacking alternative.

A 150 ml tub contains just 4 grams of fat and provides as much protein as a medium sized chicken breast, with the 150 calories per pot being supplied mainly from protein rather than empty sugars and fats. The glutenfree product benefits from the sweetness, flavour and creamy texture expected of normal ice cream, without any of the unhealthy cons or guilt that comes with overindulgence. Wheyhey provides an important protein source, which is an essential micronutrient used by the body for building, repairing and maintaining tissue. The formula contains xylitol, which is a natural sweetener that does not impact blood sugar levels and can help prevent disease caused by bacteria contributing to oral and dental health. Established in 2013, Wheyhey is led by founders Greg Duggan and Damien Kennedy, and supported by celebrity brand ambassadors who include worldrenowned supermodel David Gandy, fashion designer

Chloe Green and musician James McVey. The brand has also signed up key celebrity athlete ambassadors such as Olympic diver Jack Laugher, Paralympic weight lifting athlete Ali Jaward and International rugby player Jim Hamilton.

It can also be used as an ingredient in cooking, simply add this into a breakfast smoothie to increase the protein content before your morning run or serve it alongside your protein pancakes for a tasty accompaniment to this popular dish.

The concept of the ice-cream came about in 2013, after the founders took a trip to the cinema, where their pre-prepared tupperware boxes of healthy snacks were swiftly confiscated by staff and the only option left was to opt for a sugary alternative, but as fitness fanatics who are concerned about their weight and what they in-take, they immediately felt that there was something that must be done to rectify the availability of healthconscious snacks across the UK and internationally.

Wheyhey is currently stocked in a number of major retailers in UK and Ireland such as Tesco, Wholefoods, Holland & Barrett and GNC. It is available online through the Ocado and Muscle Food websites. The ice cream is also stocked at selected Odeon Cinema branches, Nuffield Health/ gyms and ISS Defence and Health care sites. The brand is growing at an exponential rate, overseas the brand has seen success in the Middle East, Germany, Estonia, Finland and Ireland. Wheyhey is currently available in Chocolate, Banoffee, Strawberry and Vanilla flavours, retailing for £2.50 for a 150ml tub and £6.50 for 500ml.

At this moment the idea for Wheyhey was created. In the coming weeks and months, they bought an ice-cream maker and numerous freezers from Ebay to develop the recipe. 2 years on, they have sold over 2.5million pots and business is expected to triple this year. The brand are currently making waves in the health and nutrition sector, having been recognized as an innovative nutritional source and recently selected as a ‘Trailblazer brand’ by Food Vision and Unilever Foundry, they are the only UK brand chosen to take part in THRIVE, a Silicon Valley international business programme for start-ups in the food and ag-tech industry.

When Amy makes it in the office! SUNDAY LUNCH? Got to be my local The Mustard Pot in Chapel Allerton especially when the sun is shining in the beer garden. In the city centre I would recommend the New Conservatory on Albion Place its a well-established drinking hole with so many beers on offer and one of the best happy hours in the city. QUICK PINT Stew & Oyster in Oakwood. Cool in the summer, cosy and warm in the winter with a fantastic range of beers. CHEEKY COCKTAIL? Revolucion de Cuba do amazing cocktails and makes you feel like you are away on holiday for a few hours. I also love The Alchemist with the unique and wonderful creations and of course Oracle is always a firm favourite in the summer months, particularly with their new great Brunch deal with has proved a great hit in the city.

POSH NOSH? Iberica really has the wow factor, the décor and food are next level. It’s a great addition to the city. HIDDEN GEM? Vice and Virtue. A really cool little cocktail bar at the top of New Briggate. I also can’t wait to see what the new restaurant has instore if the food at their sister venue, Dough Bistro is anything to go by. ONE TO WATCH? The Hedonist Project is definitely the one to watch as they change concept every 3 months so you have to get your skates on to enjoy Old Tom’s Gin Kitchen before it’s transformed into Trader Dan’s Surf Shack serving Rum based cocktails throughout Summer. IMPRESS A CLIENT? Black House, The Grill on the Square is fantastic for meetings and client lunches. It has great atmosphere with warm and friendly service on top of the great food. But if you’re not careful you can end up staying all day! COMFORT FOOD? Bird & Beast do a great Sunday dinner and their chicken is the best! With so many burger places in the city, Almost Famous is our favourite especially the Vinny Chase burger

with Love and Hate fries. Let’s be honest most people love a good burger! WITH THE FAMILY? Roxy Lanes or Roxy Ballroom. HEADS UP Who knows the menu best? Who makes the biggest impact on your experience? Front of house is your friend! H&N talk shop with Kyle Basnett, general manager of Gusto in Cookridge - voted ‘Best Suburban Restaurant’ this year by H&N readers.

GUSTO COOKRIDGE 151 OTLEY OLD RD, LEEDS TEL: 0113 267 2100 www.gustorestaurants.uk.com

“ Everyone should be met with a warm welcome, and every step of the customer journey should be slick and professional. When we receive great feedback from our customers, it reminds me why I do this job.” How long have you been working with Gusto Restaurants?

I have been working for Gusto for just over two years now. I am currently General Manager of their Cookridge restaurant in North Leeds.

What’s the best thing about working here?

The training. All of our members of staff from the ground up are involved in a very detailed and focussed training program from day one. This helps us to provide all of our guests with the unique experience they would expect when dining at Gusto. We hold regular training sessions on Wine, Cocktails, Spirits and Food that keep everyone refreshed and knowledgeable. This allows us to pass on that great knowledge and experience to our customers, through great service.

a mouclade sauce, baby spinach and peas, and topped with a poached egg. With our mains it would probably be the Slow Roast Pork Belly, served with gnocchi, pesto and crispy shallots. And if you’ve left enough room for dessert our signature Nutella & Mascarpone Calzone always puts a smile on people’s faces.

What drinks are going down well?

Alongside our Summer Food menu we have just released our new cocktail menu. Customers seem to be going for the Pink Grapefruit Martini like it’s going out of fashion. We mix Tanqueray with Cointreau, and fresh orange and grapefruit. Light and refreshing, you can’t go wrong!

Tell us: What makes this restaurant so special?

I love the job, the customers, and the whole team. But I would say the most challenging aspect is trying to find time to spend with my fiancée. She also works in the industry so finding time around shifts to organise a wedding, and spend time with each other, can be difficult. It’s the day to day challenges when at work that keep me interested. No day is ever the same which helps keep the job fresh and exciting.

We have a real sense of community in Cookridge. We are always looking for new ways to support local charities and organisations that are close to our hearts. Ourselves and the Gusto Leeds City Centre team took part in the Dragon Boat race for Martin House Children’s Hospice this month, to which we raised a substantial amount to go towards the vital work they do there. We also hold regular events that keep things fresh like tasting evenings, kid’s events, and party nights, so there is always something going on.

What skills have been put to the test since joining the Gusto team?

If you were a customer today, what would you order from the menu?

What are your best-selling dishes?

What do you think makes great customer service?

What’s the most challenging part of your job?

As a manager for this company, there is a lot to learn. Each of our managers goes through a 9 week training program which covers craft training on the bar, floor, and kitchen. I came from a bar background before working for Gusto so the biggest challenge was learning the kitchen operation. It was a shock to the system as I had never worked in restaurants before, but on the other hand I have now learnt some invaluable skills that will stay with me throughout my career.

We have just released our Summer Menu and a firm favourite between both customers and staff is the Smoked Haddock Risotto. It is served with 66 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

and every step of the customer journey should be slick and professional. When we receive great feedback from our customers, it reminds me why I do this job. Great customer service is founded by the journey we provide, from the first minute to the last.

Where have you visited locally recently, where the service was excellent? I recently visited the Hedonist Project on Lower Brigate. The service was excellent, with attentive and knowledgeable bartenders. Also the changing of concepts every few months always offers a new experience.

Where would you eat out on your day off?

As a lover of Asian food my personal favourites are Zaap or Little Tokyo. They have a great selection so you’re quite spoilt for choice. Or alternatively for lunch Hotel Chocolat Roast & Conch have a great café menu.

What do you cook at home?

I like to bake whenever I have time, so fresh pizza is always popular at home. Or a Mexican style buffet with tacos, burritos and homemade chunky guacamole. A firm favourite between for my fiancée and myself! Gin Copas

Our menu is quite diverse and exciting so there are a lot of great dishes to choose from. For starter it would have to be the Pork Ribs, served with a crunchy vegetable salad. I am also a big fan of seafood, so I would go for our Chargrilled Tuna Steak for my main course. This comes served with baby spinach and peperonata. To finish it all off it would be our delicious Gusto Tiramisu, a classic you can’t beat.

For me, it’s all in the experience we provide to each and every guest that walks through our door. Everyone should be met with a warm welcome,

Smoked Haddock Risotto

NEW S/S MENU 2016

T 0113 267 2100 151 Otley Road, Leeds LS16 6HN www.gustorestaurants.uk.com

It’s all change this Summer at Gusto Cookridge. You may well think of this little gem nestled in leafy suburbia as a classic Italian eatery with pizza and pasta dishes a plenty. Well up to press you would have been right, however, with the launch of this bright and airy S/S menu comes a change in tempo for the popular restaurant chain. Don’t panic, there are still plenty of classic offerings on the menu incuding the hand rolled meatballs in a spiced tomato sauce and one of my personal favourites - the garlic tiger prawns with tomato and cream sauce. However, you don’t need to be feeling too adventurous to give some of the new additions a whirl, and if you’re anything like me, you will welcome the various new dishes with gusto. The Burratina Mozzarella is served on a bed of pickled radicchio and rocket, drizzled with smoked garlic oil and topped with Pane Gratuga which is a spiced breadcrumb mix made of olive oil, capers, anchovies and chilli. This is a beautifully balanced starter, I loved the garlic oil with this velvety cheese, the peppery spice of the rocket and the crunch of the Pane Gratuga. I also loved the asparagus starter, which is unusual for me as it’s not something I would normally choose but it was served with Dolcelatte mayonnaise - OMG I could eat that stuff with almost anything.... My favourites from the selection of new main courses - well it was the Haddock Risotto, literally hands down! A cheese risotto base topped with smoked haddock, baby spinach, peas and a poached egg. Drizzled with ‘Mouclade’ Sauce (A sauce made from mussels, white wine, cream and a hint of curry). This is the most delicious risotto I have EVER eaten. Can’t say fairer than that can I? I did however succomb to the temptation of the Garganelli Primavera,

Garganelli pasta in a crème fraiche and cream sauce, with asparagus, carrots, broccoli, pine nuts and broad beans. This is a fairly classic dish but it is just so moreish, I was struggling to put my fork down. The Smoked Duck Salad - Radicchio, Lollo Biondi, fennel and orange salad, with lemon dressing is topped with thin slices of smoked duck and spiced breadcrumbs. Of course duck and orange are a classic combination, but in a salad? Yes, it works. If you’re after a lighter option and love a zingy combination of flavours then this is for you. Also, the fillet of Halibut (I’ve ordered this a few times since trying it) is served on a bed of grilled aubergine with a smoked garlic and aubergine puree, and roasted vine tomatoes. Topped with Basil Butter. Love the combination of flavours here again, it seems that is the emphasis with this new menu and I’m a fan. The delicate flavour of the fish teamed with the garlic of the aubergine and the bite of the basil really work. Onto dessert and I’m in new menu heaven! I have always championed the classic Nutella Calzone - don’t worry it’s still there, but it probably is about time I tried something a little more - lets say ‘mature’. First off, the Almond Milk Panna Cotta, topped with honeycomb, red currants, almonds, mint and lemon curd. Light, delicious, everything you would want from a Panna Cotta but with zippy flavour to cut through the creamy texture. Loved it! Then came the Summer Jelly with Prosecco, packed with berries and served with mango & pineapple salsa and Eton Mess ice cream. A resounding YES! Lastly, simply named Chocolate Mousse - served with shortbread and orange Chantilly cream......I can’t even. That, is my kind of dessert. Don’t touch my mousse, it’s not a sharing dish......get the picture? Go to Gusto and try the new menu, this restaurant was one of my favourites before they made the Risotto and the Chocolate Mousse....Tell them I sent you. WE ARE DEFINITELY GOING LOCO FOR A BIT OF CIELO BLANCO....

Succulent, smoked, shredded beef brisket. Rich, zesty guacamole. Juicy, tamarind coated corn. Authentic Mexican cuisine is a serious treat for the taste buds, but other than hopping on the next flight to Acapulco, how else can one truly satisfy a habanero hunger?

Well apparently right here in Leeds. ‘ Born from a tequila obsession and developed through a love affair for Mexican food’, Cielo Blanco promises delicious bona fide burritos to rival that of any cocinero (that’s chef to you and me). Can they deliver on their Mexican promise or will ‘cocinero’ turn out to be a phony Tex-Mex Tony? H&N stop by for the launch of their new menu to find out. Vibrant, lively and welcoming; Cielo Blanco perches above the hustle and bustle of Leeds on Trinity’s 5th floor. Abuzz with chitter-chatter and mariachi music, you can’t help but feel at ease here. Rustic wooden tables adorned with vivid, Mexican inspired decoration are arranged intimately. Social eating is a Mexican tradition which is championed here at Cielo and there is no doubt that the the guys have created the perfect dining environment for it to thrive. Infact, it’s the relaxed and social dining culture the Cielo team experienced at the ‘incredibly vibrant barbacoa meat markets of Oaxaca’ which has been the inspiration for their entire menu. Packed full with small dishes, nibbles and sharing platters, this fodder is begging to be feasted upon between friends. Mouth watering scents of spiced, smoky goodness floating from the kitchen soon come to fruition when our table is suddenly laden with an array of colourful and exciting dishes. ‘Chorizo Queso Fundido’, basically the Mexican equivalent of fondue, is rich and creamy with a spicy chorizo kick which makes it impossibleto stop dipping into. ‘Black Bean and Avocado Tostadas’ are crunchy and fresh and the ‘Chiles Rellenos’ (cheese stuffed roasted chillies) burst with the kind of intense fiery heat that make it worth sweating for. Quite frankly, when the simple staples like guacamole, salsa and warm tortilla chips are enough to make you groan, you know you’re onto a winner. Even the salads are fought over; the ‘Warm Butternut, Beets and Pepitas’ and ‘Heirloom Tomato’ salads are so moreish and bursting with flavour, it’s enough to turn the strictest of carnivores green. 68 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

My inner meat eater is soon thoroughly awakened when we are treated to a selection of humongous sharing boards fresh from Cielo Blanco’s ‘Feast Menu’. Stacked high with assorted succulent meats, fish and choice vegetables; each is accompanied with rice and warm tortillas. We inevitably proceed to argue over who gets the last morsels of fiery barbacoa chicken and crispy, cumin crackling from the delicious outdoor reared belly pork. However, the delicately charred rump steak is pink, tender and a clear winner for me. Along with the rump steak platter comes with what I think are the best additional dishes too. A ‘12 hour Oaxacan Beef Mol’ akin to a stew, is slow cooked with chocolate and chillies making for a rich, sweet and spicy dish. Tasty too are the ‘House- Salt Beef Sopes’, beautifully brackish, it’s difficult to only take one. Not only is the food amazing here, but as the owners at Cielo Blanco also run some of Leeds’ favourite bars they know a thing or two about a decent beverage. Serving up traditional agave tequilas and mezcals, homemade sangria, Mexican wine and cocktails that evoke memories of reclining on a distant sun kissed shore; there is something on the menu for every palette. We try so many delicious cocktails that there are too many favourites to mention, but a particular taste sensation is the ‘Avocadorita’. Fresh avocado blended with el Jimador reposado and triple sec is balanced perfectly with zingy lime, agave and coriander. Finished off with a sprinkle of pumpkin seeds, I almost felt like I’m being good guzzling two or three of these green beauties. The Cielo Blanco team’s ‘lust for flavorsome Mexican cooking’ is evident and I’m glad to be able to say truly some of the most authentic around. As they open their second restaurant in London’s Exmouth market we wish them all the best of luck on their Mexican mission. If you haven’t tried these guys yet, make sure you stop by soon for some seriously tasty, traditional Mexican fodder. Maybe a few tequilas too. Tell them we sent you... MARGARITAS THEY MAKE YOU HAPPY...

1. ITS ORIGINS ARE MURKY... No one is quite sure who invented the margarita, but there are a lot of theories. The most widely spread rumor is that an American socialite named Margarita Sames created the drink for her friends in 1948. One of her party guests was Tommy Hilton, who added the drink to the bar menu at his hotels. This is probably not true, though: The first importer of Jose Cuervo used the tagline “Margarita: it’s more than a girl’s name” in 1945—three years before Sames debuted her drink. Another story is that a man named Danny Herrera made the drink in his Tijuana restaurant in the ‘30s or ‘40s (accounts vary). Marjorie King, one of the showgirls there, was unable to drink any hard liquor but tequila. She wanted a cocktail using the liquor, so Herrera began experimenting. He concocted the now-famous drink and named it after the showgirl, as Margarita is a Spanish version of the name Marjorie.

2. MARGARITA MEANS DAISY IN SPANISH... The daisy is an old prohibition drink that has a base spirit, sugar, and a sour. The cocktail later inspired the sidecar, which is basically a margarita with cognac and lemon. Some believe that the margarita is just a spin on a tequila daisy.

3. THE FIRST FROZEN MARGARITA MACHINE WAS INVENTED IN 1971... The origins of the cocktail are unclear, but the origins of the machine are pretty straightforward: Mariano Martinez invented the frozen margarita machine in the early ‘70s. The 26-year-old Dallas restaurateur was having trouble creating the frozen drink for customers; bartenders complained they

took too long, and customers thought they melted too quickly. After seeing a Slurpee machine in a 7-Eleven, Martinez was struck with inspiration. He transformed a soft-serve ice cream machine into one that pumped out frosty margaritas. The drinks were a huge success, and the machines can now be found all over the country.

4. THE SALT IS IMPORTANT... The salt is there to bring out the sweet and sour flavors of the drink; even just a pinch will help subdue the bitterness and enhance the important flavors. On top of this, salt intensifies the drinker’s perception of the drink’s aromas, making the flavors even more powerful.

5. MARGARITAS ARE INCREDIBLY POPULAR... According to numerous studies, Margarita had an amazing year in 2008 when it got the reputation of the most popular drink, representing 18% out of the sales of mixed drinks. In this top, it was followed by Martini, Rum and Coke, Vodka and Cosmopolitan.

6. THERE ARE TONS OF VARIATIONS... The original recipe calls for tequila, Cointreau, lime, and salt to garnish, but there are a number of creative spins of the cocktail. Different fruits like peaches, mangos, and pineapple can be added to give the drink a more tropical feel. Some replace the salt with sugar, or garnish with sage or coriander leaves. Even crazier, adventurous types will add ingredients like Sriracha or chocolate. Here’s a full list of creative margaritas to try.

7. THE WORLD’S LARGEST MARGARITA WAS MADE IN LAS VEGAS... The Flamingo Hotel’s Margaritaville Casino in Las Vegas holds the honor of making the largest margarita in the world. This enormous drink was 8500 gallons (32,176 liters) and “served” in a 17-foot-tall tank. It took 60 people 300 hours to create. The drink, called the “Lucky Rita,” was created to celebrate the opening of the casino in 2011.

8. THE WORLD’S MOST EXPENSIVE MARGARITA COST $1200... In 2013, 230 FIFTH Rooftop Bar & Penthouse Lounge in Manhattan baited partiers with a frozen margarita that used some incredibly high-end ingredients—the tequila alone cost $1800 a bottle. Even the ice was made from $450 bottles of Lois Roederer Cristal Champagne. The final product was poured into a Ralph Lauren hand-blown Hungarian crystal glass that can be taken home afterward. The decadent drink was for a good cause though—half the money was donated to the buyer's charity.

9. YOU CAN GET YOUR MARGARITA IN FRIED FORM... Why drink your cocktail when you can eat it? This strange food is served at the Texas State Fair, along with a variety of other food that shouldn’t be fried. Funnel cake batter is put through a margarita mixer, fried, and then soaked in more margarita. The finished product is topped with whipped cream and served in a salt-rimmed glass.

WE ARE LOVING ALL DAY DINING AT EVERYBODYS IN GUISELEY...

everybodys

There are quite a few words I could use to describe Everybodys in Guiseley; relaxed, cool and refreshing with an easy going vibe that makes for a really welcoming atmsophere. However, to be honest it’s all in the name! A welcome new addition to the town, we certainly felt right at home - as it appears, did ‘everybody’ else!

The décor is retro cool with its bold colours and fun spray paint artwork on the walls, the music perfect for whatever time of day you visit; for breakfast and morning coffee you are welcomed by relaxed background music, brunch and lunchtime it’s a bit more upbeat and in the evening there’s a great energy about the place, enticing some people in for drinks and others for great food. We visited on a Friday in early June, booked in for 7pm, we arrived just before and it was so good to see so many people sat outside in the evening sunshine, taking full advantage of the outdoor seating and dining area. We were also impressed by the diversity of the customers and we quickly realized that this place really does offer something for everybody. Most of the people outside looked like groups of friends or work colleagues, enjoying end of week banter, some fantastic craft beers and of course the Prosecco was flowing freely! Inside we were greeted warmly by our waiter, Phil who showed us to our table in a private booth. On the short journey from the door to our table we unexpectedly saw two groups of friends already there, one group told us this is their new favourite place for drinks and the others were also having a meal and said they like to come to Everybodys for an early dinner a couple of times a week. Earlier that day I had also been in conversation with another friend who said she had recently met a business contact at Everybodys for breakfast and it had been great, making the perfect informal meeting place where you can get anything from a drink or a snack to a full meal at any time of day. Once seated in our booth, Phil handed us the menu, explaining that Sandwiches are available up to 5pm and that small plates are the starters but as the starters are very generous portions, some people order one with a couple of sides instead of a main course…blimey Phil, you weren’t joking! My starter of Oak Roast Salmon Fishcake with samphire and brown shrimp (£6.00), was huge and would definitely make a great main course; huge it may have been but it was so good that I couldn’t bear to leave any, even though I knew I would probably

70 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

not finish my main course. My husband had ordered Jalapeno, Black Pepper and Lemon Chicken Fillets with white BBQ sauce (£5.50). Another generous portion which also came with a chunk of crusty bread. This course was no less delicious, however be warned, it’s hot! If you love your food with an extra kick, make sure you choose this dish. I ordered a glass of Pino Grigio and my partner a craft beer, both served nicely chilled and just before the starters arrived. Phil, I have to point out was an absolutes star, we watched him look after a number of tables, some with large groups of people on them and he never stopped smiling and constantly checked every table to make sure everyone was happy and if more drinks were needed. It was a hot evening and drinks were being downed pretty quickly. Our main courses arrived soon after the starter plates had been taken. I was in a fish mood and was pleased to see that when Grilled Salmon Steak with asparagus, hollandaise and chive mash (£12.50) arrived, it was a more manageable portion size and everything was cooked to perfection. This was a really flavoursome summer dish and one which I would highly recommend. The only thing was I didn’t get chive mash, instead it was lightly cooked sliced new potatoes and I actually think I preferred it, after my sizable starter I don’t think I would have coped with mash! My husband chose Bangers and Mash, Cumberland Sausage and buttered mash (£10.00) with a side order of buttered greens (£3.00). He polished off the lot! Now we had a problem…we were so full we couldn’t manage a dessert! The dessert menu they call the Sweet Tooth and there’s some really good old fashioned favourites on there, plus a selection of ice creams and cheeses to choose from. Next time I will choose more wisely as I do love a good pud. We can see the attraction of Everybodys and it looks like lots of other people have discovered it too as before we left two more groups of people we know came in. Did I mention they also have live music nights? Looks Everybodys has the winning formula. Think we’ll try breakfast or brunch next time as that menu is also brilliant. t’s relaxed and informal, no waiters topping up wine glasses after every sip, or sneaking up behind you with a six foot peppermill. Cloth napkins but not starched, blackboard menus and open plan kitchen! Intimate cosy candles flickering, friendly without pretence, ok so with a mix of Halifaxsoise and Franglaise rears its head now and then but some words just don’t translate very well if at all. This celebrated retaurant has been showered with well deserved plaudits over the last several years and it’s ability to keep taking home the bacon is testament to talent and passion of the owner and chef, Steve Kendell. It is not a designer restaurant, it’s a mix and match, it’s his rendition of a Parisian bistro.
