Titanic Spa in Huddersfield – The Love Affair Continues... We recently felt it was time to pay another visit and try out the new Hamman treatment. Lying on a hot plinth, this treatment starts with a full body brush, then you are washed using an exfoliating soap, and with a cleansing mud pack on your back, your legs are given an aroma pressure massage to drain away the toxins your have visited Titanic Spa in Huddersfield a number of times now, body is cleansing itself of, taking you into a state of deep relation. We were really surprised at the luxury of the apartments; ours was a duplex with a large open plan lounge and kitchen, plus bathroom downstairs, and a fabulous loft style bedroom on the upper floor. From Healthcare to Haircare for Izaak who cuts a striking figure in the suburbs of Leeds
F
ather-of-five hair stylist, Izaak Brading, is making waves at his Chapel Allerton men’s hair salon, Mod:, on Harrogate Road. London-born Izaak, 35, left school at 17 and initially took up nursing in the capital. But he was soon seduced by the creativity and challenge of hairdressing and quickly qualified in his chosen
8
career. After working with top names such as Molton Brown and Ned Koadie in London, Izaak was drawn to Leeds where, despite having travelled as far afield as Australia and Kenya, he says he always feels at home. Izaak has tapped into the recent growth in male grooming and has gained a reputation for helping guys reach their full potential lookswise. “It is not just about giving a short back and sides, I am adding more value to the experience of getting your hair cut and providing an environment in which people can feel happy. I like the precision and minutiae of men’s hairdressing – it is technically more challenging than it has ever been before,” Izaak explained. “With the fellas you just can’t hide or disguise it if anything goes wrong, and I enjoy that element of risk. Cutting men’s hair is an art form but there is also a science to it. Men’s hairdressing has come into its own and it is about time we celebrated that. Men’s confidence can be fragile in this current economic climate, so it is important to win the trust of the client and recognise what will work well on them.” Mod: Salons – whose name is a tribute to the
iconic era of the 60s which had such an impact on hair and fashion – has become recognised as somewhere that brings city centre chic and glamour to the suburbs of Chapel Allerton. “I like being in this area of North Leeds which has experienced a resurgence and become more trendy of late with a lot of facilities,” said Izaak, who fell in love with the city after his sister attended university there. “I would like to go on to open another couple of branches in the suburbs.” Izaak also combines theological philosophy with his astute business acumen to produce his idiosyncratic approach to the industry. In 2001, he made the radical decision to put his hairdressing career on hold for three years and go to Cardiff University where he gained a 2:1 degree in theology. During his time at University, he helped build a Buddhist temple and Buddhism now runs through his day-today approach to life and work. In addition, Izaak has embraced the ‘green’ revolution and is exploring the possibility of running a carbon-neutral salon, which would be the first of its kind in Leeds. He is already investigating a range of products that are free from sulphates and petrochemicals; he is introducing a ‘bus-towork’ scheme for his staff; and cycles to the salon himself. “I put in as many energy-efficient fixtures and fittings in the salon as I could and we recycle as much as possible,” Izaak added.

We believe that children are unique and deserve the highest standards of care and attention. We are a friendly school offering a broad and balanced education. Our children learn that each and every one of them has talent and personality which will be developed by the range of opportunities available to them. •

BOLLYWOOD NIGHT BENEFITS MARIE CURIE CANCER CARE!
Diners at a fabulous Farsley restaurant enjoyed a spectacular night of food and entertainment while also raising money for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Deeva Restaurant’s Bollywood Ball attracted over 100 guests who enjoyed a buffet followed by Bollywood dancing and a drummer. They were able to have individual Mehndi designs on their ankles and also contribute to a raffle. The evening raised over £200 for the charity and by the end of the evening everyone was getting into the spirit of the night by joining Bollywood dancers on the dancefloor. One of the owners of the restaurant, Zulfiqar Hussain, said: ”We were delighted to support such a deserving charity and know how much their nurses and the Hospice in Bradford cares for local people. We hope to be able to continue to support such a worthwhile cause.” Brian Curran from Marie Curie Cancer Care said: “ What a fantastic night everyone had and the guests were extremely generous in their support for us. We are so grateful to everyone at Deeva for supporting us in this way.”

This will help support them and go towards the cost of floodlights for the club. The store manager, Mick Hepworth said “Our store is at the heart of the local community and it is important that we can do as much as we can to support it, when we heard about Old Otliensians RUFC Ltd we were really pleased to be able to help out”. ollowing on from their successful opening and our recent restaurant review, Deeva Restaurant in Farsley is now offering a superb All Day Sunday Buffet from 1pm onwards, with the a la carte menu available from 5pm.
We were at a loose end last Sunday, the launch day of the buffet, so decided to try it out - at £7.95 per person it seemed a good idea. We were not disappointed! As usual, the team was really welcoming, and went to great lengths to talk us through each dish on the buffet, which had all been given hilarious Yorkshire names to celebrate Yorkshire Day, there were even perfect miniature Yorkshire puddings! That said the food looked, smelt and tasted delicious and vegetarians were very well catered for too rather than just having one dish as a token gesture. There were couples, families and even individual diners taking advantage of this great, cost effective dining experience. It certainly made our Sunday a lot more pleasurable with no cooking, no washing up and more time to spend doing the things that Sundays were designed for! Booking is highly recommended as once the word gets around we guarantee it will be packed!

Summer Lobster Event at The Stansfield Arms! I
t is common knowledge that The Stansfield Arms does the most amazing food and no matter what time you go, the car park is full, the atmosphere is buzzing and the slick team are constantly serving plates of mouth watering meals!
However, another thing The Stansfield Arms excels at its events. We decided to try its Summer Lobster Evening, this sounded right up our street as confirmed seafood enthusiasts. It was a lovely balmy summer evening so the glass of champagne at the start of the meal was really refreshing and set the scene for this perfect summer menu. With five starters and four mains to choose from, all of which sounded delicious, we took a bit longer than usual to make our choices. Finally we decided on the Lobster, Crayfish Egg Cream Tartlet and the Half Lobster, Prawn and Smoked Salmon Salad. We said at the start of the evening that we would eat half of the dishes we chose and then swap, all did not go to plan...we were each enjoying our starters so much that we forgot to swap! Well, maybe we just didn’t mention it, hoping the other had forgotten! That tells you how good the evening started, now for the main courses... Same plan, one Whole Lobster Thermidor, one Pan Fried Salmon Fillet and Half a Lobster, both served with fresh seasonal vegetables. Same plan, same outcome! Although we did manage a mouthful of each others at the end, just to be able to say that we had tried both dishes.
14
At this point we took a well deserved rest before choosing our desserts. Looking around the restaurant, there was such an eclectic mix of diners which really added to the atmosphere - there were couples, groups of friends, and families, all having a really lovely dining experience and a great time. Bit more people watching and general chit chat and yes, we were ready for puds! Ten to choose from this time and this took major concentration from both of us as getting it wrong at this stage would be disastrous...no such fear, the Lemon Curd Torte served with raspberry coulis and Chantilly cream and the Stansfield Mess, summer fruit compote with meringue topped with Chantilly cream were both divine!
So it has to be said, the food and atmosphere at The Stansfield Arms is always fabulous, but its special events are outstanding! When’s the next one? See the page opposite...

SANDAL PRIMARY SCHOOL “GARDEN GANG”
Sandal Garden Gang sowing a wild flower meadow with members of Habitat Heroes Environmental project.
S
andal Primary School set up their gardening club just over five years ago. We were able to buy equipment such as tools, gardening gloves, compost, seeds and pots with money from a grant from the Children`s University of Bradford to encourage science projects within our school.
Our club runs after school on Monday evenings all year round and is attended by Year 4 pupils. We have a varied range of outdoor activities and indoor garden related projects ( for inclement weather days!) that the children get involved with. Some of these include building and decorating birdboxes, minibeast hunts, pond dipping, planting up tubs and hanging baskets, sowing seeds, sowing and harvesting fruit and vegetables, weeding, making windchimes, making birdbaths, designing mosaic garden signs, scavenger hunts and decorating plant pots. After collecting the “Let`s Grow” vouchers from Morrisons supermarkets, we have been lucky enough to add further to our equipment and we also now have our very own greenhouse and garden shed. Our “Garden Gang” also tend the main school garden, where each year group have their own raised bed to grow their own plants, fruits and vegetables. In previous years our young gardeners have worked closely with the Baildon In Bloom committee, helping to plant bulbs in Baildon village and getting our school ready for the judging of Baildon in Bloom. Our club also get involved each year with enterprise projects in school. Some of these have included growing daffodils and selling them to parents after school just before mothers day and making natural Christmas wreaths and cards which were sold at our Christmas Fair. One of our favourite projects of the year is making the scarecrows for the annual “Wacky Scarecrow Walk” organised by the Baildon In Bloom committee, in
which we came first place in its initial year and second place in the second year of the competition. We are just starting work with an environmental group called “Habitat Heroes”, and are all very excited at the prospect of the different projects which, we as a school are going to be undertaking in our school grounds. Our “Garden Gang” have already sown a meadow full of wildflowers near the new Sandal Childrens Centre. We are also planning our own school allotment, a sensory walkway through our woodland area and some living willow sculptures. Our young gardeners have also been asked to give a short presentation at the next Neighbourhood Forum meeting to be held at Sandal in July, detailing all the
varied gardening activities and projects that they undertake at school.

Paprika Restaurant – what a surprise! “After months of hard work, we are now proud to announce the opening of Paprika Restaurant. We welcome you to our friendly environment to enjoy and experience our extensive menu serving some of the finest Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine in Bradford. Our team of chefs and waiters work together to make your dining experience one which you will want to repeat!” Matthew Pickles (Managing Director) “We tried Paprika Restaurant when it first opened as part of our ‘Curry Club Challenge’ and it was so good I took my wife the following night!” - David Howcroft, Resident of Apperley Bridge “I have been to Paprika Restaurant a few times since it opened, we love it!” – David Dunne of Idle.
Just a couple of the comments we had heard about Paprika Restaurant at Newline, Greengates. Their takeaway has been open for quite some time and has a very good reputation for quality take-away food, so everyone locally has been waiting with great anticipation for their restaurant to open next door. Finally after many months of hard work, Paprika Restaurant opened its doors to the public, and the reviews were all good. So we wanted to take a look and of course try the food ourselves, especially once we heard about the very unusual menu...we love trying anything new, and if the food in the restaurant was as good as their take-aways we would be very happy! If you have not yet paid Paprika Restaurant a visit, you will be ‘wowed’ by the decor. No expense has been spared and it is a credit to Matthew and his business partners that they did most of the design and hard work themselves, and it really does look stunning. The atmosphere is lovely and relaxed, the greeting friendly and very welcoming and the food smells divine, so we were really looking forward to our meal. However, be warned – the menu is extensive and there are very unusual dishes for an Indian restaurant, such as Ostrich, Venison and Lobster, so make sure you have plenty of time to mull over your choices. For our starters we chose Onion Bhaji, purely because I had not had them for ages and they really looked good – I was not disappointed, and our second starter was King Prawn Butterfly, which is king prawns lightly spiced and coated with crispy breadcrumbs...delicious! Our mains were going to be Tandoori Lobster and Karahi Lamb, but we were unaware that you have to pre-order the Lobster so chose Venison Dosa instead. Be aware that if you want to try the Lobster you will need to let the restaurant know in
advance. Venison (Deer) Dosa is luscious pieces of venison cooked with aromatic spices and herbs, garlic, ginger, spring onions, methi, shallots and fresh chillies, served with mushroom pilau rice. This was a meat we would never have thought about in a curry and it did work well The Karahi Lamb is a traditional speciality, cooked with cubed onions, garlic and tomatoes in an Asian style wok, garnished with coriander and spices. This was really lovely, tender and had great flavours. We shared the mushroom rice and also ordered a naan to share, this was just enough and we were able to eat everything without feeling too full. We shared all dishes, as we always do, but were unable to do justice to desserts, although there’s a good mix of traditional and English desserts to choose from. All in all we had a really enjoyable evening. The service was a little slow the evening we went due to the takeaway being so busy; however we were in no rush so we were happy to take our time. As they had not been open very long this was probably one of the last teething problems to be ironed out, so go along and try Paprika for yourself, we think it will be the first visit of many.

You might think that we are approaching the time of year when work on the lawn comes to an end and it can be left to fend for itself during the winter months, but the late autumn and early spring provide opportunities to improve the fundamental condition of the lawn. Over time, the soil will become compacted and thatch, a layer of fibrous material on top of the soil surface, can build up. As the name implies, compaction is where the particles of soil are squeezed closely together, thus cutting down the penetration of air and water to the root zone and so stifling their development. A thick layer of thatch also reduces the flow of moisture to the roots and it can lead to disease and moss.
conditions are afflicting your lawn. Hollow tine aeration using a specialist piece of machinery that removes cores of thatch and soil will aid the penetration of air and water to the roots. Scarifying will reduce the amount of thatch; you will be amazed at just how much waste a professional scarifier will bring out of your lawn. Followed up with an application of autumn fertiliser and a moss controller, the lawn will go into winter in a much healthier state.
Greensleeves Lawn Care in Baildon offers a free lawn analysis that will highlight any problems and the suggested treatment. For the sake of your lawn, why not telephone us now on 01274 530823 to arrange for a free lawn analysis.

Mark Drummond, owner of Towngate Fisheries told us: “We had a queue all day long down the High Street and during tea-time right down the road to the vets. We sold almost 1,300 portions of fish and chips, raising a total of £1,768.17 for the Fishermen’s Mission. “We advertised this promotional day in the previous edition of Here & Now Magazine and have been overwhelmed by the response from the general public. A Country Retreat on Your Doorstep! S
et above the market town of Otley nestles The Chevin Country Park Hotel and Spa, in beautiful woodlands and with a private fishing lake, you will find a little piece of tranquil heaven. You don’t have to travel far and once there you could be in the heart of The Lake District, in fact anywhere, a million miles away from it all. There has been substantial recent investment at The Chevin, with extensive focus on the spa. There’s a great gym, fabulous indoor pool, a whirlpool and two beautiful treatment rooms where you can really indulge in some serious relaxation! There is also an outdoor hot tub under construction; this should be completed by the end of August 2010. We visited The Chevin Country Park Hotel and Spa for an overnight stay and to recharge our batteries on Friday 30th July after a fraught week. We left the office early to take advantage of walking in the woodland grounds and then to treat ourselves to a spa treatment before enjoying dinner in the restaurant. We stayed in one of the lodges in the grounds - highly recommended as it’s the most peaceful, natural setting and, if the weather is good, you have a private undercover decking area outside the front door where you can enjoy a few drinks. We loved it and immediately felt relaxed by the country setting. Our treatments were booked for 4pm to give us time to get ready for dinner at 8pm without rushing, and it’s a short walk from the log cabins to the main hotel, restaurant and spa. If you prefer, there are lovely rooms within the hotel which were also recently refurbished - visit their website www. crerarhotels.com to see this wonderful retreat in detail. In the spa we were greeted by spa manager, Amy Rhodes, and beauty therapist, Jenny Bolton, who showed us to the spa lounge. As we were both having a Full Body Deep Muscle Tissue Massage, our treatment was explained to us and we were then escorted to different treatment rooms.
The massage was really good, focusing on the knotted problem areas in shoulders, neck and back, an ongoing result of hours sat either behind the wheel of a car or a desk! At the end of the treatments we were shown back to the spa lounge to relax and recover. Dinner was booked in the Lakeside Restaurant which overlooks the private fishing lake where a roaring log fire for those wintry nights instantly transports you to a Norwegian retreat. Here we enjoyed good food and very friendly service, the lake was lit up in the darkness and it looked magical. After a good night’s sleep and a hearty full English breakfast we had another walk around the woodlands before heading into Otley for a bit of retail therapy and then home in 30 minutes! Perfect. If you would like to visit The Chevin Country Park Hotel and Spa yourself, visit their website for availability and prices...or you could win an overnight stay with dinner, breakfast and a half hour spa treatment for two people by completing the question and entry form below.

WEDDING TIPS AND CHECK LIST! When arranging a wedding try to allow yourselves enough time to organise the day you both wish for, then work through this checklist to make sure you have covered the important items. Arranging a wedding can be a time consuming task, but before you start to work through your wedding checklist you must decide together the type of wedding you would like – for example, a formal church wedding or an informal civil ceremony. The Budget Decide at the outset who will be paying for what. It will save a lot of heartache later on if you get this step right!! As a large part of your cost will depend on how many people will be attending the ceremony, it is a good idea to draw up a preliminary list at an early stage to give you some idea of numbers. Booking the Ceremony Book the church / civil ceremony as soon as you agree on a date. Arrange to meet either the church minister or the registrar so that arrangements can be made and the ‘notice to marry’ can be issued. Church Weddings: discuss the order of service with the minister including the style of service, music to be
played, bell ringing, choirs etc. Also find out whether photos may be taken in the church and if confetti is acceptable in the church grounds afterwards. For a Civil Ceremony: you will need to see the local registrar who will not only inform you of the legal formalities but, as an expert in arranging a wedding, will advise on the number of guests that can be accommodated at the ceremony, especially if held in a Registry Office. They will also inform you if photographs / confetti are acceptable. Insurance If the unthinkable happened and your big day had to be cancelled or postponed, everything would go on hold - except the bills. Could you really afford to pay for your wedding arrangements twice? Suppliers will request deposits the moment you make your booking - how much would you lose if something unforeseen happened today? Therefore we strongly recommend that you take out a Wedding Insurance package. For a small sum you can insure your arrangements against any cancellation or change and continue arranging your wedding with confidence.
Reception Venue Look around and visit possible reception venues to see what each one offers for the money. Before you visit, write down a list of questions you would like answering. Don’t make a decision on the spot; ask for a written quote and consider all the
options together at home. Most civil wedding and reception venues will have their own planner who will be an expert in arranging venues and will be able to offer you plenty of advice
Flowers This is an important item on your wedding checklist. Plan to visit various florists, preferably on a quiet day of the week, and ask their advice on colours and types of bouquets to match the wedding outfits. You may also like the florist to provide church flowers and flowers for the reception in the same colour scheme. Buttonholes are usually provided for the principal men of the wedding party. Sprays are worn by the two mothers. You will still need to order several weeks in advance, especially if you are choosing out of season flowers.
Music What music would you like to walk down the aisle to, what hymns do you want? Do you have any favourites?
Photographer/Video You may know someone who has recently married who can give you a recommendation. Otherwise contact local photographers and ask to see examples of their work and prices. You will need to agree before the ceremony any specific photographs you require taking. If you require photographs inside the church
/ ceremony venue you will need permission.
Invitations and Stationery Decide on who you would like to be the best man, bridesmaids and ushers. Order your Wedding Stationery. Send out invitations to guests along with a wedding gift list, and directions to the church and reception, at least six weeks before the wedding date. It is also a good idea to include details of local accommodation and perhaps the phone number or email of the local tourist information centre. Why not consider having a personal wedding website to keep your guests informed of your wedding plans.
Outfits Groom’s outfit: - in most cases this is hired. Be sure this is done well in advance. The best man and ushers
also may wish to hire outfits. For bridesmaids: try to choose a colour that will not only complement the bride’s dress, but will look good on each of them.
Wedding Dress Try on as many styles as you can, and try ivory as an alternative to white as it may suit your complexion better. This is a large expense so consider hiring. With outfits for the bride and bridesmaids ask how near to the wedding day you can leave it before ordering to allow for losing / gaining weight.
The Cake Visit local bakeries and cake specialists to get styles and quotes. Most bakeries have photographs of the cakes they provide. Don’t forget to ask if stands are provided.
and choose small presents for your attendants. Many couples find it easier to choose one or two large national department stores for their guests to select wedding gift items from.
Transport Arrange your wedding transport, either by hiring transport or by using reliable cars from family / guests.
Honeymoon And Finally: If you are going abroad on a honeymoon remember a change of name will take time to administer. Choose your destination wisely and book through a reputable travel agent for complete peace of mind. Plan and prepare well in advance and allow our specialists to assist you to ensure the perfect wedding day!

Cheese Wedding Cakes, everyone wants one but where do you get them?
C
heese and Chutney located on Bingley Road in Saltaire that’s where! It’s amazing how fashions and tastes change where wedding are concerned, and wedding cakes are also constantly changing. First it was traditional fruit cake, then sponge, most recently it has been cup cakes and now there’s a trend for cheese wedding cakes. Usually this comprises of truckles of different cheeses making up the top tiers, with the bottom tier sometimes being a traditional fruit cake to accompany the cheeses. Cheese wedding cakes can be decorated in many ways, with beautiful, colourful fresh fruit and sticks of celery to ribbon and exotic flowers, as in the example on this page. Planning is essential for this type of cake and autumn and spring bookings are now being taken as choosing your cheese wedding cake will involve tastings and consultations. Demand is growing fast for Matthew Coxon, owner of Cheese and Chutney as he is the only cheese wedding cake specialist in the area. And that’s not all, if you have not already paid a visit to Cheese and Chutney you really don’t know what you are missing! In addition to the numerous cheeses on offer, the other area of speciality is the accompaniments and his range of over 100 chutneys, all sourced from local producers. Plus his very own homemade coleslaw which is so good, trying to find out his recipe has become the main focus in Saltaire! There are olives, antipasti, fine wines, Artisan breads, olive oils, wonderful vinegars, homemade cakes, hampers, cookware and so much more! If you are looking for that unusual cooking ingredient, unique gifts, the perfect way to reward or say ‘thank you’, then you are in safe hands with Matthew. His Yorkshire Hampers also make fantastic wedding presents. What about your own Cheese and Wine Tasting Evening? Need an event catering for but you’re fed up with sandwiches and sausage rolls? A feast of culinary delights awaits you at Cheese and Chutney. Some other really exciting things are planned at Cheese and Chutney this year, with ‘Cheese
and Chutney of the Month’, ‘Recipe of the Month’, monthly special offers and tasting events to introduce you to cheeses, chutneys, speciality olive oils and vinegars, breads and wines.
If you would like details for all of these email Matthew at info@cheeseandchutney.co.uk Also specialising in corporate and gift hampers.

HERE AND NOW READERS
PLEASE HELP!
I have recently sold some of my exhibition pictures and I always like to replace them with new material. Some of my favourite images come from night photo shoots. I love the challenge of photographing a subject in the pitch dark. It can produce amazing results if photographed properly. This is where the readers of Here and Now magazine can help! I am looking for new subjects to photograph at night. The more interesting the better, some ideas for subjects are: • • •
Old rusty tractors or interesting vehicle/machinery Military vehicles Dilapidated sheds/shacks with character
The most important thing for me is to have permission to photograph the subject. If possible the subject should have lots of space around it so I can approach from all angles. For any subjects that I photograph I will give the owner a free 18x12 print of the image that I take. The examples on this page illustrate what I am looking for.
If you have some location suggestions, please get in touch – info@johnsteelphotography.com

Message from Inspector Peter Tuff Eccleshill Neighbourhood Policing Team
I
am sure you share with me concerns of what the future holds in store, given the cutbacks that face the public sector. Although the decision of where these cuts will be made is out of my control, I do know that there is no intention for me to lose any staff. This means that my officers will continue to patrol their beats both on foot and in vehicles, and provide the local service that you require and expect.
An area where locally we have made an efficiency saving, and in my view rightly so, is with regards the opening times at Eccleshill Police station. Many years ago as a young constable, I can recall spending a night shift staffing the front office for eight hours and not a single person visited or phoned the station. However as we promised to keep the station open regardless, my sergeant had no choice in the matter. Recent surveys have revealed that few people visit the station on a Sunday therefore the
30
opening hours are now:- 10am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and closed on a Sunday. Anyone attending the station outside of these hours can still gain assistance as there is a phone with a direct line to the police situated by the front door.
On July 24th Eccleshill Police station staged an open day for members of the public to visit the station and get a chance to see firsthand a police station in operation. The event far exceeded my expectations and everyone seemed to really enjoy the day. I can’t thank enough everyone who helped but I must make special mention of Church on the Way for all their assistance. Even the traditional English weather remained sunny and clear for a change! Given the success of the event I am sure there will be another open day next year.

hen business owners Jaimie Dobson, of Internet consultancy iNet inSights, and Vicky Endogan, of Huddersfieldbased Solutions Bookkeeping, got to know each other through a breakfast networking group they discovered that they and other members of the group shared a common frustration with its inflexible format and expensive membership fees. Consequently proNet Business Networking was launched in the Summer of 2009 in Liversedge, with an ethos that allows people to do business with each other over breakfast in a relaxed and enjoyable way without any pressure. Jaimie Dobson, co-founder of proNet explains: “Vicky and I, along with other interested business people, basically sat down and brainstormed what we would like to see in a breakfast networking group, what we didn’t like about other groups and what we felt other business people would value. Based upon that session, we formed proNet with a regular meeting in Liversedge which has now grown to include a meeting in Bradford at the Dubrovnik Hotel that meets fortnightly on a Thursday morning.” Vicky Endogan adds: “The format of a proNet meeting is designed to be relaxed and fun with guest speakers that offer valuable information
to business owners and a unique business clinic that helps members find a solution to the business issues they may encounter on a regular basis. So if you’ve been put off breakfast networking by groups that have a stuffy nature or non-productive format, then we invite you to try one of proNet’s meetings which you’ll find very refreshing.” proNet’s Bradford group meets fortnightly at the Dubrovnik Hotel on Oak Avenue near Lister Park on a Thursday morning with meetings starting at 7.30am and finishing at 9.30am. Visiting business people of any type are welcome to attend. There’s a £10 cash meeting fee, payable on the door, which includes breakfast.
To book a place at the next Bradford meeting, please contact the group’s chairperson Gary Blonder on 07837 970745 or drop him an email using bradford@joinpronet.com Future Meeting Dates: 12th, 26th August 9th, 23rd September 7th, 21st October 4th, 18th November 2nd, 16th December

SANCHEZ WATT
RETURNS TO ELLAND ROAD!
P
remier League loan signing Sanchez Watt is aiming to establish himself at Leeds United by taking the next steps of his career development at Elland Road. The highly-rated 19-year-old has returned from Arsenal for a second loan spell, and he will remain at Leeds for the duration of our Championship campaign. He made six appearances at the end of last season as United clinched promotion and is looking to pick up where he left off. “It feels good to be back,” said Watt. “Everyone is happy to see me and hopefully I can do the business. I had a little run near the end of last season and proved myself to the manager and the fans. “The formation is similar to Arsenal and I’m going to here to give my all.” Sanchez was a late arrival to the camp last season, joining towards the end of a campaign that was threatening not to turn out quite as everyone had hoped. The youngster made his debut in the 3-0 home defeat against Swindon Town and impressed on his only start when MK Dons were beaten at Elland Road. “We stuck together and came through well in the end,” he said. “When a lot of fans come along the support gives you more of a drive. From January everyone thought Leeds were going to get promoted early, but we lost games we could have won, and it all came down to the last match. “It was a great feeling because it’s something I’ve got in my locker in terms of big
38
games and pressure games. My confidence is good because my season ended on a high because we were celebrating a good achievement.” Naturally the move to Elland Road is seen as a step in the development of Sanchez as a player. Having featured in the senior side at Arsenal, he is highly-rated by the Gunners and the opportunity to play in the Championship will see the youngster gain more valuable experience. “As I’ve said the formation is similar to Arsenal here and I’ll probably play on the wing as I would at Arsenal,” he explained. “If I do the work here people will take notice. Leeds is a big club and if you do well here it goes around quick. “People are talking about how well Leeds could do and I want to help the club go up again. “Arsenal know I want to prove myself and I enjoyed myself here.” Lee Thompson from East Ardsley joined Simon Grayson and his squad at the official photocall at Elland Road on Sunday for his picture taking with the full squad. Lee was the lucky winner at our annual Open Day after he guessed nearest to the figure of the total attendance for our seven
home cup matches last season. He was one of five potential winners selected from the North Stand as the players took part in the photo-call and a copy of the
photograph is now his for keeps. Around 3,000 fans attended during the course of the day with the two player signing sessions again proving popular. After the photo-call, the United manager hosted a series of games on the pitch, including a quickest goal competition and a blindfolded penalty shoot-out. Mini-tours of the stadium were also held throughout the day with fans getting a glimpse of the tunnel, the home changing room, and the LUTVstudios. Outside, there was plenty of entertainment in the shape of a fun-fair, face-painting and games with Football In The Community. Leeds United announced two new major sponsorship deals during August – giving the club a huge boost ahead of the new season. Hesco Bastion have agreed a five-year deal to sponsor the East Stand while Neil Hudgell Law, which has just opened new offices in Leeds, are the new South Stand sponsors at Elland Road. Hesco’s Jason Heselden is pictured with Leeds manager Simon Grayson.

The 2010/11 Season Welcomes Jon Mclaughlin
S
o hands up all those footy fans who were disappointed by the World Cup or, more to the point, the abject performance by our national team and the bunch of highly paid, under-motivated so-called super stars. It would seem that being a Bradford City fan you would become hardened to the failings of a football team but every four years it becomes more and more disappointing and more difficult to stomach. Still, at the time of writing, the new season looms and, with all but one pre-season friendly game to play, we look forward to watching a team which wants to win, which is committed to the cause.
Enthusiasm is again at an all time high and the City diehards are buzzing with excitement. A new pitch, new signings, new kits, and with a manager who appears so professional and confident how can we not be anything but enthusiastic as we count down the days and hours to season 2010/2011? Pre-season, however, has been tinged with bad press as the newspapers have reported the off-field activities of Gavin Grant and new signing Jake Speight, Grant is now serving a life sentence at Her Majesty’s pleasure for gangland murders whilst Speight decided to assault his girlfriend. No one can argue a case for Grant but the Speight incident seems to have divided City fans and calls for him to be sacked rang out whilst others seemed to think everyone is worth a second chance. I personally will applaud his skills and hopefully his goals, I will give him that second chance but no way will I applaud him as a man. The club has obviously taken action against the player but I feel spending £25k on him may well have had an influence on the way the club dealt with the situation. On the Shipley Bantams front, the
new season looms and, with the coaches booked, we look forward to another season on the road. We held a meeting on Saturday 24th July at our base, The Woodbottom WMC on Baildon Bridge, where the annual Supporter of the Year award was given out. This year saw our first ever lady winner with Pauline Roper of Saltaire polling the most votes. Pauline is a
stalwart supporter and rarely misses a game home or away. Her son Paul accompanies her on all the trips so it was fitting that Paul did the honours and presented Mum with her trophy. On receiving her award it was surprising to see her speechless for a change, more awards for Pauline then! Also the Shippers are proud to announce Jon McLaughlin as our sponsored player. Jon will wear the number one shirt and we all wish him well for the coming season. Jon replaces Michael Boulding who left the club under the Peter Taylor clear out last season. Mickey was a great character off the field and we all wish him well for the future, unless of course he’s back at VP with another team. It has been a feature of the Shipley Bantams to select a charity every season to help raise funds - we have in the past helped the Bradford Burns Unit, Cancer Research UK and The Marie Curie Hospice. This year we hope to raise money for a less well known local charity which we hope to announce in the near future. Also the recent T&A campaign for the 25 year Burn Unit Appeal has seen the
£100k target smashed with the help of some wonderful donations from near and far - it is estimated to be around the £140k mark as not all the donations are in yet. So all that remains to be said is a big welcome to all the new signings and good luck for the coming season although, with Peter Taylor at the helm, skill and organisation may well precede good luck. Also one more thing, ban the vuvuzela! The World Cup didn’t drive us mad it was the trumpet thingy.
If you wish to join our ever growing organisation please see our website www.theshippers.co.uk or phone 07974757730 for details.

RHINOS ARE OFF TO WEMBLEY! It is the first time the Rhinos will play at Wembley since they last won the competition back in 1999 and fans have been snapping up tickets with nearly 4,000 sold on the opening day of sales. As usual the Rhinos are always well supported away from home and with nearly 4,000 tickets sold on the opening day of sales it looks like the capital will be a sea of Blue and Amber on the day of the final.
L
eeds Rhinos have booked their place in the Carnegie Challenge Cup Final following a dramatic victory over St Helens in the semis.
Fans were kept on the edge of their seats until the final whistle, with the Rhinos having to come from behind to secure their place at Wembley. The Rhinos have faced a difficult Cup run this year, playing Super League sides Hull, Wigan, St Helens and now they will take on last year’s winners Warrington Wolves as they aim to collect the famous piece of silverware. Leeds-born Danny McGuire was named Man of the Match against St Helens after scoring two second-half tries as Leeds twice came from behind to edge out rivals St Helens 32-28 in a thrilling semi-final at the Galpharm Stadium in Huddersfield. The stand-off’s double took his career tally past 200 but he had little chance to savour his achievement in a nerveshredding finale. McGuire said: “It was pretty tense, it was see-saw action in the second half. We put one on their chin, they put one

on our chin. We have had a tough run to the final - we have played Hull, Wigan and now Saints, so we have done it the hard way. It was something I personally wanted to achieve but we have not done anything yet. We are just one step closer to our dream. It’s a great achievement to score 200 tries but I am lucky to play in a great team with great players. Without the rest of the boys I wouldn’t be anywhere near that.” Coach Brian McClennan echoed McGuire’s sentiments but was proud of his players’ achievements so far. The New Zealander said: “I was nervous for sure, but I’m full of admiration for the spirit of the players and how they showed tremendous character to keep fighting back. The main thing about these Rhinos boys is that they will never, ever give in. For me that is the sign of what makes a champion team. Hopefully we can build from this and earn the right to be called a champion team in 2010.”
The club shop is also offering supporters a great offer on the home and away shirt, with a £10 reduction on adult and children’s shirts. To commemorate this special occasion the Rhinos have also produced a limited edition Wembley polo shirt for sale which will be worn by the squad for the Carnegie Challenge Cup Final as well as a special t-shirt which the players will warm up in at Wembley. These can all be bought at the club shops at Headingley Carnegie Stadium and St John’s as well as online at www.therhinos.co.uk The trip to Wembley will be a day for all supporters to remember and as well as selling tickets and coach travel for the match the club also has two special travel packages which include overnight stays in London.
For all general ticket enquiries contact the Rhinos ticket office on 0871 423 1315 or for details on our travel packages call the sales team on 0113 2033222.

Audio Equipment for Visually Impaired at the Grattan Stadium!
B
radford Bulls are delighted to be able to announce that thanks to the generous donation from several parties, the Trevor Foster See Through Sound Audio Commentary system is now installed at the Grattan Stadium. The equipment allows visually impaired supporters to listen to a special commentary of all games at the stadium and is already in use at other rugby league venues. Gill Johnson, the Chairperson of the Rugby League Disabled Supporters Association, herself a Bulls supporter, said: “I am delighted to know that the Bradford
Bulls have the equipment and volunteers needed to launch the Trevor Foster See Through Sound Audio Commentary system. It is already a great asset to fans of the super league clubs using it and also the RFL which uses the same system at its major events and we know that Trevor himself would have fully supported this project as it will enable more Bulls fans and visiting fans alike to enjoy the great game day experience here at the Grattan Stadium Odsal. “The Bradford Bulls Disabled Supporters Group and the Rugby League Disabled Supporters Association would like to thank the Trevor Foster Memorial Fund, the Bradford Rugby League Players Association, the Great Britain Rugby League Lions Association and of course the Bradford Bulls supporters
for making this possible by kindly donating the funds to purchase the equipment.” Bradford Bulls Media Manager Stuart Duffy said:
“We are delighted that the system is now in place at the Grattan Stadium, Odsal. Anything that improves the facilities and game day experience for the disabled supporters who visit the ground is a very worthwhile investment. We would like to thank all those involved in making this possible.”
