Bingley Fine Food Festival 2010
T
his year’s Fine Food Festival will bring flavours from all over the world to Bingley Market Square at Easter. Coordinated by Bradford’s Markets service, nearly thirty stalls will bring a whole array of speciality foods from every corner of the world, alongside traditional Yorkshire fayre, to the town which will enjoy a Fine Food Festival for the third year running on April 2nd and 3rd. Mediterranean smells such as olives, feta cheese and paella will mix with the aromas of Asian favourites such as curries and chutneys. There will also be more traditional dishes for sale such as hog roast, pies, pickles, fish, venison and game. The sweet-toothed will be delighted to browse around the patisserie and the sweet, toffee and chocolate stalls. All kinds of refreshments will be on offer including a Polish beer bar with rhubarb lassi for the adventurous and tea and coffee for the more traditional. Delicious smoothies should also prove to be a popular addition.
A centrepiece is being provided by Chino Thai, a restaurant based in Bradford’s Centenary Square, who are carving a fruit sculpture in the centre of the Market Square. On the Friday, April 2, Soraya Overend, Project Manager for the Jamie Oliver-inspired Ministry of Food Centre, will be demonstrating to lookers-on how to make simple, tasty meals from fresh products that can be obtained from local markets. The Bradford Council-run centre is based in John Street and has been running courses since before Christmas, helping participants learn how to cook healthy recipes. Councillor Adrian Naylor, Executive Member for Regeneration, said: “Local residents and visitors to the area will once again enjoy the variety and quality of the food being offered at this ever popular festival. It is a great reminder of what Bingley has to offer, especially with the market that takes place every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.”

here are not many businesses that are breaking records at the moment but United Carpets in Shipley are certainly bucking the trend with their success. Owner Adrian Lee told us that much of this success is down to the fact that United Carpets as a whole are the UK’s fastest growing carpet retailer, with unrivalled buying power and this means that each store can offer the largest selection of carpet and flooring at unbeatable prices! Adrian is confident that with discounts and offers, which cannot and will not be matched by anyone else in the area, and the extensive choice in flooring and beds on offer at his Shipley store, he has got something to suit anyone’s pocket. However, Adrian wants his customers to know that such a vast range of products, at brilliant prices, does not mean that there has been a compromise on quality. In fact far from it as the ten point Customer Charter, a pledge to all United Carpets customers proves.
WHERE POSSIBLE OFFER A TIME FOR YOUR FLOORING INSTALLATION IN THE EVENT YOUR CUSTOMER HAS SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES.
The charter leaves you in no doubt that they are a company you can trust in today’s uncertain economic climate. With United Carpets, your money and goods are completely safe and you will receive exceptional service each and every time. With fantastic offer for the New Year on beds and flooring, a visit to the Shipley store has to be your first port of call! It will also probably be your last as whatever your requirements and budget you will find the perfect flooring for your home, office or commercial premises, expert advice and service from the in-store team plus a superb fitting service by fully trained, fully insured, trustworthy fitters! You never know who you are letting into your home, so it’s reassuring to hear that the fitting team at United Carpets in Shipley have been an established team for the last 10 years. Because the total sales and service experience is so good, they work on 80% referrals from satisfied customers.
Many carpet shops have just one fitter, which means you could be waiting quite a while to have your own carpet fitted - if their previous fitting job runs over time, this has a knock on effect, delaying your own carpet. Due to the size of the store, United Carpets, Shipley have a fitting team large enough to guarantee getting your new carpet fitted at your convenience and not the store’s - it can even be fitted the next day if that is what you want. It makes sense to call in at United Carpets, Woodfloor and Beds in Shipley for choice, quality, and service and probably the best deals you will find anywhere. Photos show members of the committee and the volunteer working party planting bulbs.
Baildon in Bloom The Baildon in Bloom Committee had only just recovered from their very successful ‘Wacky Scarecrow Walk’ before they started with a new incentive, their ‘Golden Daffodils for Spring’ promotion. This idea caught the imagination of the Baildon public and it appeared to set the scene for the ‘Yorkshire in Bloom’ competition for 2010. Having won two Silver Gilt Awards, the committee are pulling out all the stops for a Gold Award this year, and Bradford Council have confirmed that they will support as much as possible to help Baildon achieve this target. The Yorkshire in Bloom judges will arrive in Baildon in early April for their spring judging and the Baildon in Bloom committee are confident that with the continued support and cooperation of the villagers, Baildon will again raise the bar with their beautiful display of blooms. Baildon has an enviable reputation for being a very clean and well cared for village and the committee would like to offer their personal thanks to Baildoners and visitors to this popular village for their efforts in keeping such high standards. There has been a generous reaction from members of the public, who have donated many bags of bulbs to boost the committee’s contribution. The number of bulbs planted for spring is almost three thousand, and as Wordsworth once said, Baildon will have a ‘host of daffodils’ around the village. This has all meant a lot of hard work for the committee and volunteer planters on

Body & Soul
the working parties. There has been a great deal of help from The Probation Service and their Payback Team. The team consists of seven teenagers with a supervisor, who all brought their own tools and even their lunch with them! Committee member Ron Bairstow told us, “We were very impressed with the way the payback team tackled the job in hand, they worked very hard and it was obvious that they realised that they were ‘paying back’ to the community for their misdeeds. Their efforts were greatly appreciated by the committee and we would highly recommend this wonderful service provided by The Probation Service.” There were two areas planned, the area around The Cricketers Arms and Baildon
Green hamlet, and the second by the cattle grid, close to the tilted trolley. The team worked very hard and planted 700 bulbs in a few hours. Each school in Baildon also received a bag of daffodil bulbs, to be planted by the school garden clubs. This idea came after Sandal School won second prize at the recent Scarecrow Walk, with scarecrows from their own garden club. The Baildon in Bloom committee are hopeful that the Yorkshire in Bloom judges will be suitably impressed by their efforts to include all of the schools and general public in their target of a Gold Award in 2010.

‘Unfortunately
since the veterans were given notice to quit, Towngate Rooms has stood empty, looking very sorry for itself
’
Towngate Rooms, Baildon – ‘A New Lease of Life’ By Ron Bairstow Towngate Rooms, built in 1912, still stands proudly in the centre of Baildon and has seen many changes all around it over the years, and in spite of its shabby appearance it still manages to retain a majestic style as though it knows it has a quality befitting its stone carved name; Liberal Club, symbol of another age – long ago. It has been home to a great number of societies over the years, from the patter of tiny feet from The Liberal Club, to a rehearsal room for Baildon Band, and for many years it was the home of Baildon Veteran Club. Unfortunately since the veterans were given notice to quit, Towngate Rooms has stood empty, looking very sorry for itself. But as the
title of this story tells, it has a ‘new lease of life’, beyond any dreams it may have had! The new owner, Louise Pickles, has been waiting for over 3 years to obtain the building and put her activities and plans into action. There will be extensive alterations required and Louise is sure she has found an important niche in the market, a niche that will be appreciated by the people of Baildon and visitors alike. I will report the progress in the forthcoming editions of The Local Focal and Here & Now Magazine. Watch this space for further details.

box schemes think pink this Valentine’s Day with Riverford chef Jane Baxter’s recipes
V
alentine’s Day started in the time of the Roman Empire, in tribute to the Goddess Juno. The following day was the Feast of Lupercalia, where sacrifices and rituals took place in honour of a heathen god. While sacrifices seem rather terrifying, feasts always sound good to us, and a humble root vegetable may well be your secret to success this February 14th. Forget imported, out of season asparagus, beetroot is the ultimate Valentine’s Day vegetable. Since Roman times, beetroot juice has been considered an aphrodisiac and its vibrant bright pink colour is stunningly romantic. Jane’s Beetroot Soup is a great Valentine’s Day dish, light and full of flavour, with a striking swirl of sour cream and chives. Beetroot is also incredibly versatile, so for something sweet, impress your date
with Beetroot Cake. To really get into the spirit, make your soup or cake using a Valentine’s wooden spoon. In Wales, wooden love spoons were given as gifts on February 14th, carved with hearts, keys and keyholes. Giving a carved spoon to your loved one symbolised the unlocking of your heart. Fancy a glimpse into your future? According to an old wives’ tale, try twisting the stem of an apple whilst reciting the names of people you might marry. You will marry the person whose name you’re calling when the stem falls off. Then, cut the apple in half and count the pips. This is, so they say, the number of children you’ll have. Whoever you’re planning to surprise this year, Jane’s recipes are sure to make an impact. Look out for the Riverford Cookbook hitting the shops this spring.
Serves 4 2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, chopped 1 potato, diced 1 inch piece ginger, grated or finely chopped 2 oranges, zest of one, juice of both 3 medium beetroots, steamed until tender and diced 2 pints water salt and pepper sour cream & chopped chives, to serve
beetroot soup by Jane Baxter Instructions: Fry the onion in the oil until soft (do not brown). Add the potato and ginger and fry for 3 mins. Add all the remaining ingredients except the seasoning. Bring to the boil and simmer for 20 mins. Blend until smooth. Season to taste and serve decorated with a swirl of sour cream and chopped chives.
crushed carrots with pine nuts and goats cheese by Jane Baxter

Drizzle with good extra virgin olive oil. Serve with toasted pitta bread.

beetroot (or carrot) cake by Jane Baxter Instructions: Preheat the oven to 165°C. Grease and line a 25cm loose-based cake tin. Mix together the flour, baking powder and sugar in a large bowl. Add the sultanas and grated beetroot. Beat
the oil and eggs together, then add to the bowl. Combine with either a wooden spoon or electric mixer. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 1-1¼ hours. Insert a metal skewer into the cake; if it comes out clean, then the cake is cooked. Cool on a wire rack. As an alternative, substitute beetroot for carrots to make a carrot cake – it works just as well.
Makes 1 large cake 250g self-raising flour, sieved 2 tsp baking powder 150g soft brown sugar 100g sultanas 200g beetroot, peeled and grated (2-3 medium sized beetroots) 150ml vegetable or sunflower oil 2 medium sized eggs, beaten
Guy Watson began farming at Riverford in Devon over 20 years ago. He was an organic vegbox pioneer, giving customers the freshest possible seasonal fruit and veg at a fair price to customers and growers. Many of our customers are as passionate about the business as he is; no-one wanted the business to be largescale. Guy teamed up with ‘sister’ farms who shared his passion and wanted to re-build the connection between grower and consumer. River Nene was the first sister farm in 2005. From Sacrewell Lodge Farm near Peterborough, we deliver to homes throughout the east of England. River Swale followed in 2007, from Home Farm in North Yorkshire. River Swale supplies veg boxes across Yorkshire and the North East. Riverford at Norton has since opened, delivering organic veg to homes around the Hampshire area. Working as a family of farms means we can maintain our commitment to low food miles, local employment and the support of local farmers and keep a close link between grower and consumer.
