Evolving Approaches to Talking About AIDS?

Atlanta-area blogger Mark S. King made headlines this past week with his blog entry, “Stop Bludgeoning Young Gay Men with Our AIDS Tragedy,” which was originally published a few weeks earlier. In his entry, King argues that, while knowing our history is important, using the stories of people who died during the initial outbreak of the disease as a way of scaring young people into being safe isn’t all that effective. It’s a point I don’t see made regularly enough, but it’s something that needs to be discussed more. I’m 26, and while I certainly can make the mental argument for being safe while having sex, I admit that it’s hard to make an emotional connection. I have a few friends who have tested positive, and a few more that have had HIV-related scares due to other issues. But I’m didn’t live through what some of the older members of our community lived through, so that frame of reference is a bit lost on me. I won’t deny that we as a community still need to address HIV/AIDS. We’re looking at a time where the numbers of people infected by HIV are going up, particularly with younger parts of our community. But attempting to scare young people into being safe may prove about as effective as abstinence-only sex education – in other words, not very effective. Let’s try other ways that may work better.

I can remember when I first moved to Georgia, I was a total wreck. I have diabetes, hypertension, depression, prostate cancer survivor, chest pains, arthritis — you name it I had it. When I first arrived at Pride Medical they checked me out and put me on medication, and gave me their recommendations. I put my trust in them and my health began to improve. I will never forget when I started to show an improvement Dr. Anisman sent me the biggest barrel of yellow mums with a note of how proud he was with my improvements. No other doctor had ever done anything like this for me before or put my welfare first. Later I started seeing Dr. David Morris; he is the most passionate and concerned person. He listens intently, asks all pertinent questions, and makes sure you feel comfortable. And Pride Medical has other physicians and specialists to assist you. It is like one-stop shopping, including prescriptions. I have been a patient there since 1995. Nothing or no one could persuade me to go to another practice.

Lateasha Shante Shuntel: The Ghetto Goddess of Midtown (Part 2)

I

t’s time to put my bulletproof vest back on and finish my conversation with the ghetto goddess herself, Lateasha Shante Shuntel (not really, but I am wearing a Christmas vest). The last time we spoke was in Part 1 (check out our website), and I asked her about the once again growing trend of “straight” guys who prefer to date trans girls. I wanted her to express her opinions being that after all…gulp…she’s a trans girl herself. Okay, give us the “tea.” What’s your take on that subject? Well that has actually gone on for years. I don’t judge people on that level, but I just love how Jerry Springer has been on air for 23 years now by some “brick” coming out saying, “I have a secret to tell you”. Really girl, it’s a secret? Well you know, I’m straight up real with you and tell you like it is so you’ll already know what you’re getting once these panties drop. At that point, there should be no more questions. I don’t care if you’re “straight” or not. Yesss! No more questions! Wait…a “brick”?. So what kind of “straight” men you usually date? Thugged out or Wall Street trade? Really, is that even a fair question? I will say that I’ve learned that the older I tend to get, without revealing my age, you gotta be careful with some of these young-ass-so-called trade. I love my freedom and do not plan on losing it messing with trifling trolls! (we cackle) Amen. Plus you’re so busy girl! You work more hours than all the elves in the North Pole put together! What’s your schedule again? Oh really Mr. Brent “Pap Smear” Star, you trying to call me an Elf? I got your Elf right here (she points at her family jewels). But seriously girl, I bartend/waitress at Blake’s on Friday and Saturday from 3–9 p.m., then Sunday from 1–6 p.m. and every other Monday from 3–9 p.m.! I also perform

12 // davidatlanta.com

at Blake’s on Thursdays & Fridays, both shows at 11 p.m. Sundays, I’m at 10th & Piedmont at 8:30 p.m. in Flashback Showgirls! Oh yeah, this tranny stays busy! Gurl! I’m not sure if you even have time for a damn man…unless he meets you behind the dumpsters at Blake’s. Last question right quick: of all the valuable things you’ve learned as a drag performer, share at least two of those of those lessons with us. One: Never ever take this for granted. I often wonder if drag will be around another 10, 15 or 20 years, because we have become so critical and unsupportive of our own community, and I think gay people have taken the performers and talents for granted without ever knowing the history behind it! Two: Never stop learning. Love you Lateasha and thank YOU guys for reading!

of the week: Robert Ritchie

In fact, Ritchie’s Blogger.com profile includes in his long list of interests: travel, wine, cheese, classical music, knights, French bread, arts, painting, and, just in case this list seems a little too gay, “stopping homosexual ‘marriage.’” AMF’s website is also a treasure trove of anti-gay propaganda including articles like, “The Bottom Line on Marriage,” “To Keep Our Honor Clean! Why We Must Oppose the Homosexual Agenda for the Military,” and “1,049 Reasons to Oppose Same-Sex Marriage.” So I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise that on Nov. 18, the day after real people died in real tornadoes, Ritchie posted on the Fatima blog, “Do you think the massive Illinois tornadoes are linked to the passing of the same sex ‘marriage’ bill?” Um, no, I do not. But please do go on. “The massive tornadoes that hit Illinois after the passing of the same sex ‘marriage’ bill, has stimulated many people to reflection. In it, some see God’s chastisement; others see it as yet one more merciful warning from Providence” he wrote. “What do you think?” What do I think? Well, first of all, I’d like to point out your use of the word “stimulated” and ask you if “reflection” is some sort of euphemism. As in, “He was “stimulated” to “reflection,” wink, wink.

By D’Anne Witkowski

I

t was only a matter of time before someone made the connection between the fact that Illinois now recognizes marriage equality and the fact that Illinois was recently hit by tornadoes. Such a claim is, after all, in the rightwing whacko playbook. Any major disaster, be it natural or manmade, can always be traced back to the gays.

Ritchie is the executive director of America Needs Fatima, a Virgin Mary fan club of sorts (Our Lady of Fatima is a code name for Mary, birther of Jesus) that really, really does not like homos.

9/11? Gays, according to Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. Hurricane Katrina? Gays, according to Pastor John Hagee. Sandy Hook? Gays, according to James Dobson. Sodom and Gomorrah? Gays, according to some book I found at Costco labeled “fiction.”

Secondly, I think you should be ashamed of yourself. Here you are getting all excited about a violent storm that killed six people and injured about 150 more because you think it might be God’s or Jesus’s or Fatima’s or whoever the fuck’s way of throwing a hissy fit about the gays. It’s very telling that your blog post expresses no compassion for the victims. No call to aid or prayer. Just a myopic obsession with “the gay menace.” You sir, are sick.

And now Robert Ritchie is laying the blame for the 24 tornadoes that wrecked havoc in Illinois on Nov. 17 where it For those of you who want to do something besides cast rightfully belongs: the gays. aspersions on the people of Illinois trying to put their lives back together, there’s the Red Cross chapter in Illinois Ritchie is the executive director of America Needs Fatima, a (www.redcross.org/il/peoria) or you can find various relief Virgin Mary fan club of sorts (Our Lady of Fatima is a code efforts online where you can donate something a little more name for Mary, birther of Jesus) that really, really does not helpful than “God’s chastisement.” like homos. 14 // davidatlanta.com

My 8 Minutes with

Britney

Spears Pop Star On (Not) Being a Gay Icon, Feeling Like an Outsider and That ‘Adorable and Hilarious’ Comment BY CHRIS AZZOPARDI photos: Michelangelo Di Battista

16 // davidatlanta.com

It’s Britney, bitch. No, really, it is. She’s on the phone. And Britney Spears – the meek, reserved, media-shy entertainer – doesn’t get on the phone with press very often these days.

“Work Bitch” has the feeling of “that” – of gay – so much so that Spears herself has said it’s a salute to her queer fans. The title is “a term of endearment” and was inspired by gay patter among her pals. What other queer street slang has she picked up from them?

She snickers, letting her Louisiana drawl fully flex. “I don’t She’s speaking to me from L.A. on a busy day full of frenzied really know that much. I mean, I hang out with gays all promo leading up to her eighth release, Britney Jean, when the time. They always surprise me. It changes weekly, you she drops the word that elicited eye rolls from some in the gay know?” community. “The slang you learn?” I ask, just to be clear. The word is “adorable,” and Spears – who, in a radio interview with San Francisco radio station 99.7 NOW FM, used it to “Yeah.” describe her beauty team (they’re also “hilarious,” she said at the time) – mentions it to me when I ask her how wild the gay So maybe Britney doesn’t watch RuPaul’s Drag Race on boys go when they’re in the midst of their pop princess. the regular, maybe she isn’t out getting all crazy at the gay clubs (she tells me that being a mom doesn’t allow “They’re adorable,” says Spears, 32. “They’re absolutely for nights out with her friends at queer bars, but before adorable.” children: “Yeah, always”), but part of her – a part she’s not really addressed until now – can empathize with the plight It seems like an appropriate time to tell her how that “adorable of growing up gay. and hilarious” comment went viral and rubbed some the wrong way. “Alien,” one of the most self-reflective tracks on Britney Jean, alludes to her own feelings of being an outcast, of “Wait, what? Who felt the other way?” she asks, sincerely being alone, of being Britney Spears: “Had to get used to concerned she’s offended people, and even a little lost. You the world I was on / While yet still unsure if I knew where I get the impression Britney Spears doesn’t Google herself. belong / That was then, like an alien.” So, I fill her in. “I would never say anything to be mean to them. I love my gay fans. Gay people are always usually my best friends in the whole world,” she says. “I completely adore them.” Considering the pop star’s clout in the gay community, it’s obviously mutual. From the then-17-year-old’s sexually suggestive breakout hit “…Baby One More Time” – when the once-Mouseketeer, dressed in that iconic Catholic schoolgirl getup, merged childhood innocence with the onset of sexual desire – to “Toxic,” easily one of the greatest gay club jams of the aughts, Spears has influenced the queens and queers of the dance floor as much as they’ve influenced her. “I get inspiration from them on almost all of my songs,” Spears says of her gay fans. “They’re somewhat girls, so it’s so inspiring to do stuff that they like to hear, like the cool ‘in’ stuff. Whatever I do for each record is definitely inspired by them.” If you’ve heard 2007’s defiantly bold Blackout and its popdance follow-up Circus, and then, obviously, Femme Fatale, you know Britney isn’t just full of it. These are really gay albums. But her gayest? Is it Britney Jean? “I would say so, yes,” Spears says, sounding almost unsure, as if the gayness exists equitably on all her releases (and, really, it does). “I just feel like it has that feeling. You can’t really put your finger on it. It just really has that feeling of ... that.”

“The song is basically about when you’re all alone and you feel like you’re alienated from the world,” Spears says. “I think it’s human nature; we all innately do that sometimes and keep to ourselves, and that’s what the song is about.” It was during her second release, 2000’s Oops!…I Did It Again, with its self-empowerment mantra “Stronger,” that she recognized a big gay following. “I really started noticing more coming to the shows,” Spears recalls. “People were emulating my clothes and wearing the same outfits, and it was just really fun.” Through the years, she’s met many of these gay boys after shows, where, she says, “a couple of them have told me about their heartbreaks and shared stories about their boyfriends, which has been really kind of sweet.” I tell her we relate to people who fall down and get right back up. Britney, for all her success, has been to the top, but not without seeing the bottom. Between 2006 and 2008, Spears divorced Kevin Federline, fought tirelessly for the custody of her two boys and sobered up at a drug rehab facility. There was also the panty-less partying, the British accent, the head-shaving and the time she attacked a paparazzo with an umbrella. Life was looking bleak for Britney then, and she knew it. On “Piece of Me,” a track off Blackout, Spears called herself “Miss Bad Media Karma.” But when she talks about the time she felt alienated, there’s no mention of this more recent regrettable history. It’s clear – not just from our chat, but the rare times she’s @DavidAtlantaGA // 17

been on the phone with a journalist in the last five years – that she doesn’t care to look back. For the most part, anyway.

“Yeah,” she says. Then silence. (I give her the opportunity to elaborate over email after our phone chat: “Yeah, it would be a special moment.”)

“Since I was in high school, I’ve been kind of a shy person,” Spears admits to me.

“So you believe gay people deserve equal rights?”

I ask, “Would you say you felt like an outsider then?”

“Yeah,” she assures. (Via email: “I think everyone should be treated equally.”)

Her voice drops. “A little bit, yeah.”

At this point, seven minutes into the conversation, a publicist grabs Britney’s attention. She tells me to hang on a second. Because she felt different as a kid, but also, of course, musi- Because she’s getting whisked away for a Britney Jean cally – Spears, despite her public ups and downs, has been a listening session that she’s already late to, “This has to be mainstay in the queer scene for the last 15 years – I wonder the last question,” she informs, sounding distracted. if Britney considers herself what many call her: a gay icon. I ask about Las Vegas, where she’s launching her two-year “I don’t know about that,” she says, surprisingly frank. “But I residency, Britney: Piece of Me, at Planet Hollywood. know I do have gay fans.” Expect half-naked men – she says, because obviously – but I remind her that a large part of the community sees her as also “look forward to a really good time. They’re gonna definitely feel like they’re a part of a show.” a gay icon. Her response? “That’s nice. I don’t know about that.” But surely she’s thought about her status in the gay community, right?

Milking every second of my scheduled 10 minutes with her by sneaking in one final question, I ask her which girl kiss she preferred: the cheek peck Rihanna gave her during the 2011 Billboard Awards, or the legendary Madonna lip-lock at the Video Music Awards?

“Not really, no.” What about equal marriage? Would Britney like to see her gay friends – she tells me later, via email, that she has an “amazing” relationship with them, many of which are her dancers – get married? 18 // davidatlanta.com

There’s brief silence, a “thank you” and then a sudden click. That’s it. Our eight minutes together. And just like that, Britney Spears gives exactly what she promised: a piece of her.

The Music of

Christmas 2013 Kelly Clarkson, Wrapped in Red The original Idol has released several holiday tunes over the years including a cut on best-bud Blake Shelton’s holiday album. The singer even included her iTunes session version of “I’ll be Home for Christmas” on her 2012 greatest hits package. Well, Ms. Clarkson (or is it now Mrs. Blackstock?) finally gets her holiday wish as Wrapped in Red makes it way to shelves and stockings across the world. The album features nine classic covers and five original tracks created with Greg Kurstin, best known for Clarkson’s mega hit “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You).” It’s Clarkson’s original material (minus the cheeky “4 Carats”) that shines the most here. And why not? In the album’s liner notes, Clarkson says she was the kid who listened to Christmas music all year round. The album kicks off with the title track “Wrapped in Red,” an ode to an unspoken love a la Love Actually’s Keira Knightley and Andrew Lincoln’s winter poster board scene. The biggest highlight? “Winter Dreams (Brandon’s Song),” a love song to now husband Brandon Blackstock. Wrapped in Red also continues Clarkson’s foray into the country music scene—as if Reba McEntire being your mother-in-law isn’t country cred enough. Here Clarkson teams with Reba and Trisha Yearwood on “Silent Night” and Ronnie Dunn on “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” The former is a match made in heaven leaving diehard fans hoping this is the second coming of the Honky Tonk Angels, but the latter just sinks. But Clarkson’s barn banger “Tie It Up” is enough for all to be forgiven. Mariah Carey redefined holiday music with her 1994 album Merry Christmas and we think Kelly Clarkson could do the same. Find out for yourself by entering to win Wrapped in Red at davidatlanta.com - Joseph Brownell 22 // davidatlanta.com

Mary J. Blige, A Mary Christmas Fifteen years ago, before the soul diva was crying out for “no more drama,” a Mary J. Blige album of all Christmas carols would have spread less cheer and more tears. I mean, she’d have your face in a pillow of giant sad tears with a cover of Mariah’s “Miss You Most (at Christmas Time),” and don’t even get me started on Amy Grant’s “Breath of Heaven (Mary’s Song),” a song so Mary J. it has her name right in the title. But no, Blige and producer David Foster ain’t going down that chimney. Though always in impeccable vocal form, this is all fairly standard stuff: No one needs to hear the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul “pa-rum-pum-pum-pum”-ing on “Little Drummer Boy,” and “This Christmas” doesn’t go anywhere that it hasn’t already been. Surprisingly, “Rudolph, the RedNosed Reindeer” – a song that should be beneath someone of Blige’s singing stature – builds into a cool big-band number with Mary letting loose, playfully scatting over the bass-driven jazziness. Blige has never recorded an album this not-urban, and her shift into full-fledged adult-contemporary includes “When You Wish Upon a Star,” with Barbra Streisand, and “My Favorite Things,” so orchestra-propelled you expect Blige’s next career move to be Broadway. It’s certainly festive, but all of it, albeit a glorious recording of the 1945 French song “Petit Papa Noël,” is just…fine. A Mary Christmas, an ornament hanging low when it could’ve been the star on top of the tree, would’ve been more successful if Blige was as distraught and dramatic as she looks on the cover. - Chris Azzopardi Leona Lewis, Christmas, With Love Leona Lewis made a giant splash in the U.S. with her debut single, “Bleeding Love.” Since then, though, her efforts have largely fizzled stateside, with last year’s Glassheart not even getting a proper release here. You know what that means: time for a specialty album. In this case, it’s the Motowninfluenced Christmas, With Love. The album kicks off with the sugary-sweet “One More Sleep,” which is one of the most fun original offerings of the year (I’d rank it just behind Kelly Clarkson’s “Underneath the Tree”). Lewis is a co-writer on the track, along with the album’s other two original songs. One, “Your Hallelujah,” is a gorgeous ballad that finds Lewis largely restrained, until the last chorus brings in a rousing gospel-inflected choir. Meanwhile, “Mr. Right” sounds like Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” with a Motown spin, especially when the chorus hits. Christmas, With Love is filled out with holiday staples, and while they’re all worth a listen, a few stand out. The album’s Motown influence is heavily felt on “White Christmas,” which strays just far enough from the typically gentle style in which it’s recorded to make it an album highlight. Lewis’ take on

“Ave Maria” works with her voice so well that I want to hear an entire album with Lewis singing in Latin. And the album closer, an a cappella rendition of “Silent Night,” is simply perfect as a way to end the album. - Elijah Sarkesian @DavidAtlantaGA // 23

Tamar Braxton, Winter Loversland

Various Artists, The Best Man Holiday: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Is there any sign of Tamar Braxton slowing down? Not only did the youngest of star of Braxton Family Values release Love and War, her stunning sophomore album this year (yes, it’s her second album; the first came in 2000), the baby Braxton also released her first holiday album, Winter Loversland. While the album sports a mostly traditional track listing, Braxton offers two originals: “She Can Have You,” which is just begging for placement in A Madea Christmas and “No Gift.” Of the traditional tracks, Braxton’s acoustic guitar riffing version of “Silent Night” is one of our favorites. - Joseph Brownell

Need a variety of contemporary Christmas jams and holiday classics? Look no further than the soundtrack to the Universal Pictures’ holiday hit, The Best Man Holiday, which at press time had already raked in $50 million at the box office. The album features some great contemporary holiday tracks from Jordin Sparks (“Christmas Time to Me”), Fantasia (“What Christmas Means to Me”) and Ne-Yo (“I Want to Come Home for Christmas”). But for every hit (see before) there is a miss – most notably R. Kelly’s “Christmas I’ll be Steppin’.” Yes, it is actually a song complete with its “alright, alright, alright jingle to the left, jingle to the right” bridge. - Joseph Brownell Erasure, Snow Globe You know that Erasure Christmas album you’ve been waiting for? No? Yeah, that’s because no one could have predicted that the ’80s synth-pop duo would get in on the yuletide action. And yet here it is, in all its fantastically original and out-there glory. Not just giving electro life to standards like “White Christmas” and a truly lovely “Bleak Midwinter,” Andy Bell and Vince Clarke also cut five new songs for the album, including bittersweet “Make It Wonderful” and the hopeful prayer “Bells of Love (Isabelle’s of Love).” It’s no Christmas miracle that Erasure’s surprising venture into the merry-time market is a remarkable standout. This is just what talent sounds like. - Chris Azzopardi 24 // davidatlanta.com

Matthew Morrison, A Classic Christmas It’s too bad Matthew Morrison still can’t settle on a sound that’s all his own. Had he, the covers on this humdrum holiday EP might be less like déjà vu. Morrison’s old soul and musical-theater mojo suits him for classics like “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” “Let it Snow” and “Jingle Bell Rock,” but I’ve heard more interesting versions by people in my mom’s church congregation. A mashup of “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” with “Mele Kalikimaka” is a gay ol’ time, but otherwise, get in your sleigh and keep going. Nothing to see here. - Chris Azzopardi

DENVER:

FIVE COOL NEIGHBORHOODS BY ANDRE W COLLINS

S

ituated a mile above sea level in the shadows of the dramatic Rocky Mountain range, Denver is home to plenty of locals whose personalities neatly match the city’s setting: think of people who are open, sunny, outdoorsy, and - thanks to last year’s vote to legalize small amounts of marijuana for personal consumption - high. As of January 2014, both local and out-of-state residents will be able to legally purchase pot in Colorado. Whether Denver really becomes “New Amsterdam,” as some have predicted, is unclear, but this development does reflect the generally progressive nature of this city that’s long been a favorite LGBT destination. With a vibrant arts and cultural scene, a vast supply of cool and hip lounges and restaurants specializing in craft beverages (from beer to spirits) and seasonal cuisine, and gay hangouts spread pretty evenly around a number of parts of town, Denver is a great city for neighborhood touring. You can even make your way around on bike just rent a two-wheeler from one of the many Denver B-Cycle bike-sharing stations around the city. With this in mind, here are five of the best parts of town for exploring, eating, drinking, and shopping. South Broadway

built in 1930 and screens indie and foreign flicks, or head to the Punch Bowl Social (punchbowlsocial.com), a quirky bar, bowling alley, craft beer hall, and restaurant with all sorts of amusing diversions, including ping-pong and shuffleboard. Other neighborhood fixtures include Sweet Action Ice Cream (sweetactionicecream.com), which serves handmade desserts in fun flavors (biscuits-and-jam, blackberry whiskey), and the Hornet (hornetrestaurant.com), a venerable diner–cum–pool hall–lounge, great for everything from a full meal to cocktails. As for gay nightlife along this quirky corridor, you’ll find a somewhat cruise-y, all-ages bunch at the Compound (compounddenver.com), the city’s longestrunning GLBT dance club, and Boyztown (boyztowndenver. com), a fun place to watch go-go dancers strut their stuff. South Broadway is just a couple of miles south of downtown hotels, and there’s also a convenient chain property, TownePlace Suites Denver (marriott.com) that’s geared to extended stays and is within walking distance of the neighborhood. Golden Triangle Museum District

Rooster and Moon Coffee Pub (roosterandmoon.com) is an inviting nearby spot to fill up on espresso drinks and light lunch and dinner fare. Across the street, if you’re seeking more room to spread out, consider the surprisingly sleek and luxurious Denver Embassy Suites Downtown (embassysuites3.hilton.com), the city’s only LEED-certified hotel, whose ample rooms The gay-owned and quite elegant Capitol Hill Mansion (capi- have microwaves and minifridges; there’s a very nice indoor tolhillmansion.com), with its eight elegantly furnished suites saline pool and 24-hour fitness center, and cooked-to-order and rooms, is one of the best accommodations in the Golden breakfast and an evening reception with snacks and beverTriangle - it’s just around the corner from the Kirkland ages are included. Museum of Fine & Decorative Art, a somewhat underrated treasure packed with pop art, Arts and Crafts furnishings, LoHi and works by late Colorado artist Vance Kirkland and many others. Take a trip north of downtown, beyond LoDo (aka Lower Downtown), to reach LoHi (Lower Highlands), and beyond Larimer Square that Highlands itself, neighborhoods that have become increasingly fashionable as places to eat out and bar-hop. One of the most intriguing sections of downtown, especially Top spots in LoHi for dining and drinking include Jezebel’s for culinary exploring, is artsy Larimer Square, a restored Southern Bistro (jezebelslohi.com), which earns kudos for its Victorian block that is now lined with trendy boutiques and delicious brunch and breakfast fare - it morphs into a more cafes, including two of the city’s restaurant gems, Rioja see-and-be-seen bar and dinner scene later in the day. Fans (riojadenver.com) and Bistro Vendome (bistrovendome.com), of whiskey should order one of the artisan bourbon flights. which are helmed by talented James Beard Award–winning chef Jennifer Jasinski. For a post-clubbing nosh or late Denver Art breakfast, drop by Tom’s Urban 24 (tomsurban24.com), a Museum mod diner that’s open all the time, or stop inside longtime favorite Market at Larimer Square (themarketatlarimer. com), a wonderful little bakery, coffeehouse, and deli. Other dining highlights on nearby blocks include Cholon (cholon. com), a stylish and contemporary Pan-Asian restaurant; and Euclid Hall Bar and Kitchen (euclidhall.com), which is part of same group as Rioja and Bistro Vendome and is known for its interesting beer list and fun take on late-night comfort food (pad Thai pig ears, chicken-and-waffles with maple gastrique). The neighborhood offers close access to the state-of-the-art Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA), the secondlargest such space in the nation (trailing only New York City’s Lincoln Center), with its several superb performance venues hosting everything from nationally touring musicals to firstrate opera. You’ll find several noteworthy hotels in this part of town. Opened in 2010, the stunning Four Seasons Denver (fourseasons.com/Denver) rises 45 stories above the neighborhood and contains 239 swank yet unfussy rooms with huge windows (the mountain-view rooms are especially nice), deep soaking tubs in the bathrooms, and pleasing stone and wood accents. Book a treatment in the superb spa, and dine at EDGE (edgerestaurantdenver.com), a stunning steakhouse renowned for regional game specialties like Colorado lamb

Distinctive for its outdoor seating beneath a giant milk jug, Little Man Ice Cream (littlemanicecream.com) is a fine spot for artisan sweets, while around the corner, one of the hottest dining spots in LoHi, Linger (lingerdenver.com), occupies a former mortuary (the owners describe it now as an “eatuary”). You won’t feel too creeped out when you see the stylish interior, enjoy the great views of the neighborhood, and feast on such creative international dishes as lemongrass shrimp with crispy rice noodles, and carrot-and-lentil falafel with cashews and Turkish chile. LoHi isn’t far from downtown accommodations, but there’s also a cluster of mid-range chain properties right on the edge of the neighborhood, within walking distance of the bars and restaurants nearest the pedestrian bridge into LoDo. Standouts include the Residence Inn Denver Downtown (marriott.com), which has spacious suites wellsuited to longer stays, and the clean and reasonably priced Hampton Inn & Suites Denver–Speer Boulevard (hamptoninn3.hilton.com). RiNo Northeast of LoDo, the once downtrodden warehouse district now known as the River North Arts District (RINO, rivernorthart.com) continues to take off, as both retrofitted vintage buildings and brand-new constructions lure artists, designers, furniture makers, and other creative spirits. Visitors will find much of the action - from studio

galleries to stylish lounges and eateries - along the main drags of Walnut and Larimer streets, from about Broadway to Downing Street. The neighborhood is home to two of the most popular gay nightspot in the city, the long-running dance club Tracks Denver (tracksdenver.com) and the leather- and fetish-driven Denver Eagle (theeaglebar.com). Among venues popular with a mixed crowd, the pleasingly named Infinite Monkey Theorem (theinfinitemonkeytheorem.com) is the city’s first urban winery - it’s open for tours, tastings, and all sorts of events. Across the street, the Populist (thepopulistdenver.com) is making waves for its stellar eclectic modern cooking (try the huitlacoche agnolotti or mussels with bone marrow). And nearby Black Shirt Brewing (blackshirtbrewingco.com) is producing some of the best beer in town, while Fuel Café (fuelcafedenver. com) is a great stop for creative diner-inspired fare, from fried-chicken with cheddar-scallion biscuits at breakfast to pork cheeks with mole sauce at dinner. Although there are no hotels in RiNo, the historic and charming Oxford Hotel (theoxfordhotel.com) is just a few blocks south of where the neighborhood begins, in the heart of LoDo (and also quite close to Larimer Square). Built in 1891, this luxurious and beautiful restored hotel is renowned for its individually appointed rooms (all with such modern perks as Bose Wave/iPod docks and free Wi-Fi), gorgeous art deco Cruise Room bar, and full-service spa and salon.

fairyscopes ARIES (March 20 – April 19): Ambition may be getting the best of you as you begin to place your career above all else. Put the work away and plan an evening out with friends or family. These are the people who keep you grounded and real. And don’t bore them by talking about work.

start making travel plans, making sure you can afford it before you book. You love to lavish yourself with the finer things, so look for a vacation where good food and strong libations are plentiful. A cruise would be ideal, offering a great opportunity to indulge your lazy side while enjoying the vast social possibilities.

people person today, so get out there and start interacting. Collaborating on projects would be a good start, as today is a great day to communicate your ideas. Better yet, collaborate with someone special. Working together could set off unexpected sparks.

GEMINI (May 21- June 20): A fellow you are interested in seems to be holding back. Is he hiding a past hurt? Or a current boyfriend? His hidden agenda is confusing to you, and brings about feelings of mistrust. Talking it out could help, but if he remains secretive, you may be better off looking elsewhere.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20): You feel the need for artistic expression today, so paint, write, play guitar or other artsy activities that will release your inner muse. If you’re more of a viewer than a doer, a trip to the museum or a concert will still do the trick.

CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):

once said that shyness is nice, but shyness will stop you from getting all the things you want. Keep that in mind today, as someone you are interested in seems to share your feelings. He’s not going to come to you if you remain bashful. Take a chance, and dazzle him with your warmth and intelligence.

Today’s a great one to kick-start a big project you’ve been developing. Your hard work and dedication will be apparent to others, and you will get the recognition you deserve. Be meticulous and shrewd as you progress. The going may be slow, but the outcome will be favorable.

LEO (July 23 – August 22): Your natural resourcefulness makes you a good authority figure, and people will look to you for guidance. Whether helping a coworker with a computer problem, or a friend mourning his latest breakup, your voice will be heard. But be sure to listen carefully before dispensing advice.

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18): You may feel very spiritual today and something deep inside may prompt you to seek deeper enlightenment. You’re not sure what this means, or how to progress, but the good vibes will lead you in the right direction.

VIRGO (August 23 – September 22): Romance

PISCES (February 19 – March 19): Lean on someone special today as you hash out a personal problem in your life. Your willingness to open up to him will make him feel special and needed. Touched by an angel? Maybe not, but you will feel healed by his kind words of advice.

e all know some flamers. And I’m not hating on them either. Hell, we all should have a little bit of Richard Simmons in our walk and some Quentin Crisp in our wardrobe! By the way, all you fools that still label yourselves as Str8 Acting on your Grindr & Jack’d apps - you’re the first ones that need to step off the hegemonic highway and sashay down the beaten path of glitter, rainbows and unicorns! I’ve decided to talk about all this shit during my next segment of Favorite Bitch on the Derek and Romaine show on SiriusXM. How do we really feel about the everyday performative aspect of sexual identities? Do we wanna date a nelly boy ... and can he be a top? Is an assimilated cookie cut-out from A&F the ideal ... and can he be a bottom? Can we shake ‘em both up like a martini and have the best of both worlds? The phone lines will be open that night and my ATL boys and girls can join the party anytime! In the spirit of what’s to come, this week’s column is all about the simmering, the medium well-done and the boiling over!

Dear Miss Tiger, I remained friends with my ex boyfriend after our breakup. My current partner is Str8 acting. He says he’s sick and tired of my prissy ex butting in our business. Maybe I’m to blame because I tell my ex about our problems. I love both my boys and need some advice! -Roberto Dear Is He Str8 Acting When He Sucks Your Cock? Exes who are content with sittin’ on the back burner, are the first motha fuckahs to turn the flame up underneath the other side of the stove! Bitch, I suggest you get some self-control or a goddamn pot holder ... because you got one dude ready to jump into the skillet from the frying pan and the other is ready to boil the fuck over! NEXT!

Dear Miss Tiger, Dear MIss Tiger, My roommate is a swishy flamer who wears women’s and men’s clothing. He also thinks he looks fabulous, and brags about his expensive designer outfits. Should I tell him he has no fashion sense? I have enough style to dethrone that queen! -LeRoy Dear I’m Surprised Your House Hasn’t Burned To The Damn Ground Because He Ain’t The Only Motha Fuckah That’s Flaming,

I’m gay right now, but I plan on being straight when I get older and move back to Japan. Do you have any advice? -Mr. Suzuki Dear You Must’ve Been Drunk On That Sake When You Wrote Me This Shit, First of all, you need to consider whether or not your ass is bisexual - and is it because you really like pussy or because you’re really ashamed of liking dick?

When asked what he’s wearing, I’m sure he spouts off names like Dior Homme and Mugler ... but when you take a peek in that bitch’s closet, all you see are labels saying H&M and 3-seasons-after-the-fact-frocks from none other than T•J•Maxx.

Furthermore, sexual orientation is not something that goes in and out of style like LeRoy’s roommate’s discount couture!

FYI - Unless you intend on paying all the rent your damn self, I advise you to shut the fuck up, let him keep on flaming and let someone else douse his fire. NEXT!

Wanna talk to me live about this kind of bullshit and more? Then join me next Monday, December 16th on Derek and Romaine • SiriusXM OutQ 109 at 9pm EST. For more information about my radio appearances, visit RadioBitch.com
