A Letter to Paula Deen Dear Paula, I understand that you’re concerned over the idea that some people are more or less given passes for their awful behavior, such as Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson, while your career has taken a swift nosedive since you admitted that you used a particular racial slur, even if it was, as you say, “a long time ago.”

e’s adorable, he’s beardy, he’s confident, and he’s ready to serve you up the best cocktail of your life! Rusty Shelby, of 10th & Piedmont and G’s, tells us all about his roots, his favorite drink and his mission to bring Saturday brunch to Atlanta! Take a few seconds to get to know this handsome bartender that we like to call Rusty! How did you get your start? I took a job as a server in a corporate America restaurant chain, Silver Spoon at Phipps Plaza, back in 2000. My resume included past retail management experience, so they thought it a good idea for me to try my hand with that in the restaurant world. In corporate American restaurant training, you are trained on all aspects of the job. They paused me at bartending and said, “You might just be really good at this.” I managed part-time for them, but bartended to the Buckhead crowd Monday–Friday lunch time. My career there lasted about seven years before being offered a job in Midtown. Tell us about your craziest experience as a bartender. 10 // 03.05.2014

Snowpocalypse 2011. I worked at a bar that was one of very few businesses open for days. Think Pride x5! I was the only bartender able to get to work and we were the only establishment serving food. No one was prepared for the ice storm. It was nuts! I hope every year for another one. I could have bought a new car with the money I made on one shift that week! What’s your favorite drink to make, or your signature drink? And what’s in it? Favorite drink to make has to be a Basil Lemon Fizz. I love it, some people don’t really think of basil in a drink. A suggestion is all it takes and normally folks love it! It has muddled basil leaves & lemons, Ketel One Citroen, house made ginger simple syrup, soda water. My signature drink would have to be “The Official Drink of Summer ‘05.” Created at the launch party for Absolut Peach, it’s filled with fruit juices & some soda water for bubbles. It’s a great refresher drink after a hot day. (Absolut Peach, splash cranberry - OJ -pineapple, soda water, two limes.)

LM: (Laughs) Uh, I mean, I don’t know about that! DA: Jonathan said he wants to get you on his HBO show Looking. Would you be up for it? LM: Oh my god! First of all, I went to San Francisco when they were filming the show and I ate dinner with all the guys and with Andrew (Haigh), their director, and before anything I said to them, “You guys, let’s get me on the show,” and then I watched the entire series because Jonathan gave me all the episodes. DA: Right – he said you watched it with your mother. LM: Well, first I watched them with Jonathan when we went on vacation and then I watched them with my mom. And she’s so obsessed, it’s crazy! Once I saw the entire series, I emailed Andrew Haigh and I was like, “Look, I loved it before, but I love it even more now. You gotta get me on the show. I’ll do anything. Anything you want me to play, even if I’m in the background, I’ll do it.”

Lea Michele Louder

DA: Can we get you on there as a lesbian?

T

he business of turning a theater-born star into a bona fide pop act isn’t as easy as it looks, and Lea Michele knows this from seeing her Glee co-stars, Matthew Morrison and Kristin Chenoweth, make failed attempts. The TV musical has proven Michele, who plays Rachel Berry, isn’t just a flash in the pan; this girl can actually sing. And she can sing anything, from Rihanna to Barbra to The Beatles.

LM: One-hundred percent! DA: What kind of lesbian would you be? LM: I mean, I just wanna get to work with Jonathan. I love Jon. I feel like everything that we’ve gotten to do together, whether it was Spring Awakening or working on Glee together, I just love working with him. Every time we get to play different characters together it’s so fun, so I’ll do anything that they want.

Her debut, then, wisely puts her sterling voice front and center, but doesn’t forget that to have a radio hit you need a soaring melody, and you should probably have Sia too. A strategic move considering how prolific the hit machine’s become, three of the album’s singles were all, in some part, written by Sia. The defiant “Cannonball,” produced by Stargate and resembling Beyoncé’s “Halo,” is an empowering anthem; the beautiful “Battlefield” builds into the kind of sad power ballad Celine Dion would have a field day with; and armed with an urban thrust is the mid-tempo “You’re Mine,” a declaration of eternal love Michele dedicated to her late boyfriend, Cory Monteith.

DA: Since the beginning, Glee has been such a friend to the gay community. How does it feel being part of a show that’s so bold in how it addresses issues regarding the gay community?

When Michele picks up the pace on “Don’t Let Go” and “On My Way,” you imagine the entire Glee cast dancing behind her. She sings her butt off, but the stock beats are tailored for a TV show choir and not a solo career. The last song leaves the biggest impression. Given the context of Monteith’s death, which inspired her to write “If You Say So,” the song is a haunting piano ballad made even more heartbreaking given its real-life candor. This is Michele at her saddest and most vulnerable. It’s the kind of personal touch Louder could use more of.

I’m so honored to be a part of a show that has made a big movement not only for the gay community but also for kids who just love music and have a passion for doing that. It’s opened so many doors for girls and boys that don’t look like everybody else – to make them feel beautiful in their skin no matter what they look like or where they’re from. There are so many aspects of the show that have been really amazing, and I’ll forever be grateful to have been a part of Glee. DA: I really believe the significance it’s had in the gay community will be part of its legacy.

Review by Chris Azzopardi

LM: I agree.

32 // 03.05.2014

B-

LM: What I’ve always loved about Glee the most is that while we’re making people laugh – and while we’re singing and entertaining people – we are delivering a very important message and opening up people’s minds, even though they might not know it’s happening. I get letters from fans, parents and kids. Glee has really helped a lot of people, and I’m not just saying that. It really has.

DA: Cory, who played Finn, really had a big part in that – he became one of the show’s biggest allies. How do you reflect on him as an ally to the gay community? LM: Look at the relationship between Finn and Kurt – how it grew over time, that they became brothers. There’s a really interesting episode where Kurt and Finn move in together, and (Kurt) decorates the room and Finn says the “f” word (“faggy”). Kurt’s father defends him and really kind of puts Finn in his place and, for me, that was such a pivotal episode for the show and just their relationship alone. One of my favorite episodes of Glee was “Preggers” – our fourth episode – and it’s where Kurt joins the football team. The way he gets on the team is by doing the “Single Ladies” dance, and he ends up kicking the winning football goal – it’s such a great episode. There are lots of relationships throughout Glee that have been really big turning points, and it just makes me even more proud to have been involved in the show. DA: How much pressure did you put on yourself knowing that you’d be slipping into Judy Garland’s ruby slippers to voice Dorothy in the upcoming animated film Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return? LM: Honestly, to get to be Dorothy is so cool. I didn’t go a day in my childhood without watching The Wizard of Oz. I watched The Wizard of Oz in my house so much that my mother had to hide the videotape at one point. I wore my ruby slippers, and I have this crazy Christmas video of me where every year for 10 years I’m still wearing my ruby slippers because I thought I was Dorothy. DA: What’s your favorite chapter in your upcoming memoir, Brunette Ambition? LM: Oh my god, well, the book comes out in May and I’m really proud of it. It’s a really crazy story of how I went from Broadway to being on this television show, and how I was told so much throughout my life that I wasn’t pretty enough and I wouldn’t make it to television – all of these people telling me what I could and couldn’t be. It’s about how I really overcame that and gave a big middle finger to those people and made my way to Los Angeles onto a television show. The book really is about harnessing your tenacity, your drive and your ambition and getting to where you wanna be despite what people say you can or can’t accomplish. Also mixed in there are really fun chapters on beauty, health and fitness. I love it. I think it’s a fun book. I have some copies in my office and my girlfriends will pick it up and they’ll be like, “When can I get a copy of the book? I want to make your pizza!” Because there’s recipes in it. I’m really proud of it and I think, whether or not you’re a Lea Michele fan, people can pick up the book and really get something good out of it. DA: Do you give everyone who calls you a diva the finger too? LM: Oh no. I applaud them when they call me a diva! davidatlanta.com // 33

Atlanta’s Newest Queens Flock to ‘Dragnificence’

W

ith a new wave of drag talent in Atlanta surging, local show director Phoenix decided it was time to bring a new cast of queens to the limelight. First, she recruited Atlanta’s most sickening new queens to compete in the second cycle of Dragnificent at Jungle. As a prize to the final five contestants, it was announced that they would be on cast as part of a new show called Dragnificence following the competition. The lucky five girls were Nina Bo’Nina Brown, Marcella Grrleen Redd, Jai’Ne Van Micheals, Y’Marie Santiago, and Dragnificent winner Kryean Kally. David Atlanta popped in backstage to ask Marcella, Nina and Y’Marie a few questions about their drag career and what they’re most excited about on Wednesday nights!

By Dylan Michael

YS: See, you trying to get me to throw some shade! (Laughs) I honestly believe that the top 5 were the right choices. Everything happened for a reason and, in the end, the best five were left standing! DA: What are the personalities like backstage? Is there a diva backstage? MGR: I don’t think so. We all genuinely like each other and get along and try to help each other. Some of these girls have never been on cast before, so it’s definitely a learning experience for all of us. There’s no cattiness, or bitchiness, backstage. Right now at least! Ask me again in a couple of months! (Laughs)

DA: Who is your favorite cast member to watch, David Atlanta: How was Dragnificent as a whole other than yourself, and why? experience? What did you learn? MGR: I love Miss Kryean Kally. She’s always outside the box; Marcella Grrleen Redd: As a whole it was incredible! Same thing with Marcella. She’s that. It was a challenge but, like I said, I grew from it and it was beautiful and tall and she’s not afraid to push boundaries. amazing. BearsHeretic on and a Bearracuda Boat

Team Up for a Cruise in 2015

By Elijah Sarkesian

I

f the past few months proved anything, it’s that winter weather in Georgia is a very real thing. Getting away from the cold weather in favor of warmer climates just got a little easier – for next year, at least. Heretic has teamed up with Bearracuda, the promoter of some of Heretic’s most popular parties, for the First Annual Bearracuda Heretic Caribbean Cruise. The cruise, which starts Jan. 31, 2015 and runs through Feb. 7, will take passengers from Fort Lauderdale through San Juan, St. Thomas and St. Maarten aboard the Celebrity ship Reflection. While the ship won’t be exclusively booked for members of the Bearracuda Heretic Caribbean Cruise, promoters promise many events on the ship will be exclusively for their guests. They also promise something for everyone – whether it’s partying, relaxing, or exploring. If you’re on board to party, Heretic and Bearracuda have already announced two of the DJs they’re bringing: Tony Moran and Paul Goodyear. Keep an eye out for more entertainer-related announcements over the coming months. Beyond the boat, there will be excursions on the islands exclusively for those attending through this cruise. The cruise may be a collaboration between Bearracuda and Heretic, but the trip isn’t limited to furry men. Whether you identify as a bear, cub, otter, chub, chaser, or some other part of the community – or even if you don’t identify, but you’re friendly with the community – this trip is for you. And just in case you’re wondering if the trip will be made up of just a bunch of gays from Atlanta, keep this in mind: Bearracuda promotes events in 38 cities around the world, and they’re promoting this cruise to their followers worldwide. So you can join the cruise, know some of the people, and still meet plenty of new people on your trip!

This Week in Theatres 300: Rise of an Empire: Yes, the Spartans died at the end of the first film. And no, that’s not a spoiler – the film’s way too old for that to be a spoiler. This time, see a new army of hot, barechested men rise to fight Xerxes. Mr. Peabody and Sherman: After bombs like Rise of the Guardians and Turbo, can DreamWorks Animation release a box office hit like Shrek again? Or would you rather stick with Frozen and The Lego Movie again? You be the judge.

fairyscopes ARIES (March 20 – April 19):

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22):

You’ll need to come up with unique ways to approach a hectic workday. Drinking plenty of coffee is one solution, as is exercising before heading to work. But your best tactic could be staying in bed, and leaving the mountain of headaches for your coworkers to deal with.

Repeatedly striking out with men recently may have you feeling depressed. Cheer up mate, because it’s the dawning of a whole new day. If you act like a desperate jerk, you’re only going to attract desperate jerks, so accentuate the positive and see what happens.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20):

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21):

You will be turtle-like today, slow moving and meticulous. Too bad the day will start in overdrive and only get faster from there. You’ll have to ramp up as quickly as possible. You know what happens when the turtle tries to move into the fast lane.

The boss will be in a good mood today, an opportune time to sell him some of your ideas. You’ll be amazed at how easy that will be, and he’ll give you the green light on all of them. But hopefully it wasn’t the Prozac speaking, and he remembers it tomorrow.

GEMINI (May 21- June 20):

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20):

Curb your enthusiasm if a friend approaches you with an interesting business proposition today. Look at his plans from all angles, but remember that business can be like dating. You may find someone who looks attractive, but you’ll only wind up getting screwed, and not in a way you’d like.

Recent overspending may have left your finances in a weakened and pitiful state. Tighten that belt strap today, and get frugal. You may have to return some favors if you want people to help you out, and hopefully some of them won’t involve taking off your pants.

CANCER (June 21- July 22):

CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):

Difficulties will arise at work today, but you’ll handle them with the poise of a miracle worker. It’ll be like you have a magic wand and those problems will instantly disappear. Now where was that wand when you needed it last week?

The high energy with which you’ll greet the day will be countered by slow moving coworkers. You won’t have the patience for their sluggishness, and you’ll tell them so. This won’t make them work any faster, and will cast you as the office pariah for the remainder of the day, if not the week.

LEO (July 23 – August 22):

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):

You’ll try to make a good impression with a new acquaintance today. But your massive ego may have him running in the other direction. Toning it down a bit could have you figuring out how to lure him back, and why it is you have so few friends.

Despite your best laid plans, today will be one disaster after another. You won’t be able to figure out why that is, but don’t try to fight it. Go with the flow and you’ll get though this difficult day, but expect frustration and a headache that will feel like your brain is caught in a vice.

VIRGO (August 23 – September 22):

PISCES (February 19 – March 19):

The dating game can be played anywhere, even at work. Fix your eyes on coworkers who may be looking at you. Hopefully those colleagues will be guys who play for the same team. Otherwise you may have some ‘splainin’ to do.

You may have to rely on favors from friends in high places today. Being beholden to others is not a comfortable place for you, because there’s no telling what they’ll expect in return. So keep your integrity intact, and don’t do anything that involves farm animals, a leather thong and a blender.

Dear Miss Tiger, I love you! Girl, I really need advice about my sex life. My husband woke me up in the middle of the night wanting a blow job. I was half asleep and forgot to put in my top dentures. Ever since then, he’s asked me to take my teeth out when I’m sucking his dick. He says it feels better this way but I don’t wanna do it! Any advice? -Juan

Dear Tooth Fairy, Unlike most other victims of perverted dentists, you’d be absolutely thrilled to be fondled and raped while under local anesthesia.

Dear Miss Tiger, My co-worker has really jacked up, buck teeth. Yesterday I called him a chipmunk but now I’m afraid he’s gonna call Human Resources on me. Any advice? -Robbie

To the vetoed bill in Arizona: Bye, Felicia!

Ever want to take back a bartender’s tip because they forgot to make your drink?

We can hate you, but you can’t be annoyed at us for hating you. What kind of logic is that?

It’s hard to take some organizations in this town seriously when I’ve had a three way with one of their leaders.

You think you’re special because you’re 21 and hot? You’re supposed to be hot at 21, dumbass!

I text you three times and you ignore me, I move on. I ignore your one text a week later, and you get mad? Nope.

When will people learn what sites are satirical on Facebook? My Facebook feed does not need your ignorance.

Fucking a non-white person does not count as a fetish.

“Not having a smartphone has had absolutely no impact on my sex or dating life,” said no single gay man ever.

“I need to talk to you.” That’s the one sentence that has the power to have all the bad things you’ve ever done run through your mind. *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)
