Chick-fil-hAte Less?
C
hick-fil-A made headlines this past week when it was revealed that the company’s charitable donations to anti-LGBT organizations dropped by over 99% in 2012.
More specifically, Chick-fil-A’s WinShape Foundation and Chick-fil-A Fondation each increased their grants to antiLGBT groups such as the Marriage & Family Foundation and the National Christian Foundation between 2010 and 2011 from $1.9 million to $3.6 million. Neither group received funds in 2012, though, with the foundations distributing funds to other programs. In total, the amount given to anti-LGBT groups in 2012 was down to roughly $25,000 for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. So what does this mean for gays? Is it okay to eat at Chickfil-A now? Well…maybe not just yet. Chick-fil-A COO Dan Cathy’s positions on our community have shifted in different ways over the past few years, but never quite to a position of acceptance. Cathy spoke out against the Supreme Court’s decision on DOMA, and he’s called LGBT activists “arrogant.” At the same time, he’s established a rapport of sorts with Campus Pride leader Shane Windmeyer, who’s given Cathy the benefit of the doubt on multiple occasions. It may not seem fair to judge a company based on one executive, but as the son of company founder Truett Cathy, Dan Cathy’s opinions can still have an effect on the company’s behavior towards the LGBT community, from customers to employees. And while boycotting may not impact Chick-fil-A financially – remember the number of conservatives who formed lines around Chick-fil-As when this whole controversy first started – it’s still worth considering where our money goes, and if it’s worth a taste of that delicious (yes, I admit it) chicken.

lake’s on the Park is an Atlanta institution, and we know something that’s made them a favorite of gay Atlanta over the past 25 years: their bartenders. This week, we caught up with bartender Jim Smith to talk about drinks and customer behavior. What is the most unusual drink order you’ve received? The most unusual drink order I’ve received? Hmm… well, there have been a few. I remember a customer one time ordering a vodka cranberry and asked me to put in olives. I didn’t ask why; I just did it. But that’s a really strange combination, if you ask me! What’s your favorite drink to drink yourself? I’m actually pretty simple. I enjoy a glass of Pinot Noir or a vodka and water. Like I said, simple! What’s the worst thing a customer can do? Well, not tipping is an obvious answer. But, I think, the worst thing is when you get run through the gamut of how much ice and how many particular garnishes a customer wants, and then they give you nothing. Not even a thank you. That’s when it gets bad to me. 10 // 03.12.2014

Georgia: Go to Pot Medical marijuana: it’s the next hot-button issue hitting Georgia. At press time, the Georgia House of Representatives has approved a particular type of medical use of marijuana to treat patients with cancer, glaucoma and seizure disorders by a 1714 vote. The next step – approval by the Georgia Senate – has long odds of winning approval, but
simply passing the House was a major step for this conservative state. With medical marijuana being deemed legal in other places around the country, not to mention being made wholly legal in Colorado and Washington, it’s time for other states like Georgia to come around. Why? We can think of some reasons…
Who’s getting in trouble?
It’s not a gateway drug.
D ispr op or t iona tely, minorities. Black consumers alone account for roughly 13% of annual marijuana users, but 26% of related arrests.
Prohibition is a failure. Marijuana’s been illegal for over 75 years nationwide, but large numbers of people use it, grow it, and sell it. Prohibiting marijuana’s just not a success for our country.
Numerous medical professionals, including former Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders, argue that marijuana usage doesn’t automatically lead to using harder drugs.
Think of green growth. For governments, it’s economically smart. Legalization can lead to things like taxes, which we levy already for cigarettes.
Imagine the medical advances. Medical uses of marijuana are how the drug is getting legalized in some areas; if made legal nationwide, we could see a greater exploration of pot’s medical benefits.
And think of green waste.
It’s the best way to decrease use by younger people. Fun fact: in places where medical marijuana is legalized, usage rates actually decrease with young people.
16 // 03.12.2014
You know what costs money? Arresting 750,000 people a year for marijuana possession. Something that’s expensive and inefficient needs to be replaced.

Hi-Fashion: You Are Gorgeous Hi-Fashion’s current EP is great in the moment, though lacking in long-term hooks.
E
lectronic synths and drums with a throwback sound, fronted by a super fashionable duo: that just sounds like the recipe for gay pop perfection. Get ready to say “Hi” to Hi-Fashion. The group just released their second EP, You Are Gorgeous.
The album starts off with the track “Lighthouse” which was a great choice to kick off the project. You get to hear the richness of her voice and the quality of their lyrics. Not saying all their songs are deep and gorgeous and amazing, but it’s nice to hear something deep and meaningful from time to time. The song is built on electronic synths and drums and Jen DM’s amazing, distinct vocals.
By Dylan Michael
but it has lines in it that kill me such as “She used to be a cop, not afraid of a cuff” and “Who’s that boy in the naughty skirt”. It’s, once again, a fun song from a fun group. Nothing that’ll change your life, but I can guarantee your head will bob and your feet will move. Keeping in the theme of songs not making sense, the next track is entitled “Pupusa.” Now, according to Wikipedia, a pupusa is a traditional Salvadoran dish made of a thick, handmade corn tortilla that usually has beans, cheese or meat. Now, you might wonder why someone would want to write a song about something like that, but be glad they did! “Pupusa” is an amazing up tempo dance song with a Latin feel and, guaranteed, after the song is over, you’ll be singing the hook “Pupusa, pupusa!” all day long. With lines like “I put M&M’s in my popcorn, when I watch porn, can I blow your horn, till the break of dorn,” you’re gonna fall in love with this group for owning the fact that they’re fun and silly.
The second track on the project is entitled “Get in the Game” and is reminiscent of the old 90’s jams. It’s got energy but not too much energy that you feel like you’re about to pass out on the floor. It’s a song about getting back on the horse and moving on with life no matter how hard it may seem. The typical, encouraging/empowering song, but more fun! (Take note from that, Demi Lovato.)
Following up, we have “Eighteen”. It starts off with dark, pulsing drums and jumps into a great dance break. “Take it off and let’s do this, take it off and let’s do this”, is what Jen croons in this song where she demands someone to do this and do that “like she was eighteen”. You can imagine what you were like at 18 and figure out the gist of the song without me having to spell it out for you. Following “Eighteen”, they have a song called “Special Delivery Love” and then two different remixes Following up to “Get In The Game”, we have the title track of the track. This track is probably the gayest song on the “You Are Gorgeous.” Another dance track, another uplifting album, but once again, amazing in its 90’s throwback vibe. message. This track has the most 90’s throwback feel to it and I live for it. The chorus pounds out with the line “you are Overall, the EP is solid. It’s not life changing. It’s not going to gorgeous, man and woman.” Much in the vein of Lady Gaga, have a VH1 special in 10 years, but it’s feel good music that’s Hi-Fashion is all about self-love and confidence. They’re just bound to make you bob your head. not as preachy about it. Key tracks: “Lighthouse,” “Pupusa,” “Quiet Attack” Next on the album is my personal favorite track, “Quiet Attack”. The rap-esque vocals and the deep, dark synths are everything. I’m not quite sure what the song is even about,

Deep Inside Hollywood By Romeo San Vicente
Ellen Page, Freeheld at last
Elton John props up Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Long in the works, the Ellen Page project Freeheld couldn’t be coming together at a better moment. The actor has just gone public with her sexual orientation to the support of fans everywhere – and 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club has multiple Oscar nominations, making the climate a little more welcoming for gay-themed drama. Even better news: The film has a firmed up casting sheet, with Julianne Moore attached to play Page’s life partner and Zach Galifianakis ready to take on the role of a human rights activist. Based on the Oscar-winning 2007 documentary of the same name by Cynthia Wade, the true story revolves around Stacie Andree (Page) and New Jersey police detective Laurel Hester (Moore), a couple who face anti-gay laws when Hester becomes terminally ill and not allowed to assign her pension benefits to Andree. Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia) is the screenwriter, Peter Sollett (Raising Victor Vargas) will handle directing duties, and it all starts shooting later this year for what is assumed to be a 2015 release.
The Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, a touring stage vehicle for years – years! – for the likes of Donny Osmond and other former TV stars, is going to get a new lease on life from the man who has probably worn more real-life Technicolor dreamcoats than anyone else: Elton John. An animated musical feature film version is coming from the pop star’s Rocket Pictures film production company, the people responsible for the weird cartoon musical Gnomeo & Juliet (you remember, it had all those gnomes singing “Crocodile Rock” and other John hits in the context of an upbeat, non-suicidal, children’s version of the Shakespeare tragedy). And why not? It’s weird, too: a Bible story about a young man whose multicolored cape interprets dreams for religious leaders amidst famine and imprisonment. It’s singing, dancing fun for everyone. No cast yet, but we’ll keep you posted when Justin Bieber signs on.
Alexis Bledel wants to marry Katherine Heigl. Won’t you help?
Looking for Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay
OK, not in real life. But the producers of Jenny’s Wedding are still hoping you’ll donate to their Indiegogo fund to finish production on the romantic comedy-drama about two lesbians facing uncertain marriage plans. From director Mary Agnes Donoghue (screenwriter of Beaches and White Oleander), the film stars Katherine Heigl as Jenny, a lesbian who wants to marry her girlfriend (Alexis Bledel). Except Jenny never got around to telling her parents (Tom Wilkinson, Lindo Emond) that she’s gay. Principal photography is finished but the production is looking to raise about 150,000 more dollars to complete the film. And that’s where Indiegogo comes in. As of this writing, they’ve managed to come up with a little more than $30K. So it boils down to this: You may never want to see Katherine Heigl do anything else in this life except make out with Rory Gilmore, but you know you do want to see that, so isn’t it worth five bucks? Sure it is. Do it for the sake of lesbian wedding movies now and forevermore.
Looking producer/director Andrew Haigh, the British filmmaker whose indie feature Weekend garnered him a landslide of critical acclaim, has lined up his next project, the Charlotte Rampling/Tom Courtenay-starring 45 Years. Adapted by Haigh from a short story by poet David Constantine, the story is a strange one: A man and woman are planning their 45th wedding anniversary party when the man learns that the body of his first love has been discovered, frozen and preserved in a glacier in the Swiss Alps. What happens next, as they say on Upworthy, will shock you. So, you know, not weird at all. And that makes it perfect for the adventurous Rampling, whose long career has been marked by a nervy streak and a willingness to work with interesting filmmakers, as well as for the Oscar-nominated Courtenay (The Dresser, Doctor Zhivago). Even better, it gives Haigh the perfect opportunity to flex his not-gay storytelling muscles. Nobody likes to be typecast.

300: Rise of an Empire
W
hen it came out back in 2007, 300 was an unexpected hit with audiences. There was just one problem for Hollywood: the ending is pretty definite, making a sequel next to impossible. Seven years later, audiences get a workaround solution that’s, with one exception, mildly inferior to the original in every way, but still tolerable as popcorn fare.
By Elijah Sarkesian role (“This is Sparta!”, anyone?) helped propel the original to its success. Stapleton’s role is considerably more subdued. Themistokles is more of a politician than Leonidas, and while his process may ultimately be better than Leonidas’, it doesn’t make for a fascinating character. Fortunately, that’s made up for by Artemisia, who’s ultimately the central villain of this film. In some ways, Artemisia twists and expands the “woman in a sea of men” role that made Lena Headey’s Queen Gorgo so memorable in 300 by making a woman even more central to the story and making her the most formidable character in the film. Eva Green’s played memorable women before, both as Vesper in Casino Royale and the only salvageable part of Dark Shadows, but if anyone deserves to break out the way Butler did with 300, it’s her.
300: Rise of an Empire is less a straightforward sequel to its predecessor than a parallel story. Some time is spent establishing the motives of the Persians in this film in a part of the story that predates 300, while the end of this film takes place after the end of the last one. For the most part, though, Empire focuses on a sea-set battlefield under the command of Greek general Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton), attempting to unite Greece in a war against Xerxes (returning star Rodrigo 300: Rise of an Empire isn’t a film for all audiences. ooking for a hot night out with a bunch of men who love hairy men? You may want to check out Otter Chaos, a hot party for otters (if you’re not up to date on bear community lingo, an otter is basically a skinny, hairy gay man) and their admirers this Friday, March 14.
“I wanted to do something for the other furry creatures in Atlanta,” says Eagle bartender Tony Jackson, who’s organizing the event. “There’s so many bear-centric events, I feel that some people might feel left out. Plus, otters are hot!” The evening includes a special guest for the evening: DJ At0m1c from Charlotte is coming to town to play the event, and according to Jackson, he sounds like he’ll fit right in: “DJ At0m1c was actually voted one of the hottest men at Atlanta Pride a few years back. He’s a blonde furry otter with a talent for dubstep and house.” “I’ll be playing a bit of everything, mostly dubstep and complextro,” adds DJ At0m1c. “This is an event and I plan to bring as much energy as I can. So come ready to rage, we are going hard from start to finish. Let’s blow some shit up!” While the event formally starts at 10 p.m., the event includes an opening act that starts at 8:30 – local band Amen Sister plays an hour-long set before DJ At0m1c takes over. “Amen Sister is an up-and-coming band that started right here in Atlanta,” says Jackson. “Their sound is folk rock. We have done live music before and I think that the Eagle is a great venue for live bands.” With a mix of new acts for Atlanta audiences, plus door prizes and giveaways throughout the evening, Jackson’s worked hard to make Otter Chaos a fun night for attendees. “I think along with the giveaways, plus some surprise guests, that it presents something that isn’t done around town on a regular basis and will be fun for the otherwise furry-oriented.” 28 // 03.12.2014

Dating back to 1858, Atlanta’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is of the oldest in the country. Travelling down Peachtree Road, from Ivan Allen to Marietta Streets, the parade features the most integral members of Atlanta’s Irish community. There’s something for everyone here, with the parade including clowns, floats, Bagpipe & Drum Corps, dancers, drill teams and more. Regardless of your background, everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. As always, parking is limited for this event. Spare yourself the headache, and take MARTA.

This event is geared more toward the mature crowd – leave the kiddies at home for this one. You probably should take MARTA or bring your own D.D. to this party. Advance tickets are $19.95 per person.

fairyscopes ARIES (March 20 – April 19):
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22):
You’re always the first to dive in, and all you get for your efforts is a face full of mud. Spontaneity is a good thing, but sometimes it’s better to stick your toe in the water first. So look before you leap today. It could be the best way to save face.
Today will be as good as finding out that Liza Minnelli will be performing a private show just for you in the comfort of your home! Or it could be as bad as discovering that she has no intention of leaving once the show is through, and she needs someone to rub her bunions.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20):
SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21):
New opportunities may knock on your door today, but you won’t be home. That’s because you’ll get tired of waiting for them, and rush out before they could come to you. Impatience will be your Achilles heel today, especially after you realize what you’ve missed out on.
Avoid starting conflicts at work today. A mercurial temperament will make you combative and hard to work with. But coworkers will be ready and they’ll be more than glad to take you on. Their claws will be longer, sharper and faster than yours, and they’ll relish using them on you.
GEMINI (May 21- June 20):
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20):
Heeding your friend’s advice could save you a lot of heartache if you’d only take note. But you choose to go your own way instead. You’ll wish you had listened when they warned you about your latest boyfriend. You may have discovered earlier that he’s a she, and not a very pretty one at that.
Today will not only be a productive day, but it’ll be lots of fun, too! So you’ll leave work with a song in your heart and a spring to your step. Take this positive energy with you after work. Guys won’t be able to resist someone as buoyant as you, and the fun may continue right into the night.
CANCER (June 21- July 22):
CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):
Your emotions will be easily ignitable today. Unfortunately, loved ones and coworkers will provide the fuel needed to set you off. But hold your tongue before railing on them for little details. Flipping out on your partner because you can see his nose hairs is way out of line.
Run for the security of home after this stressful day. There you can flop on the couch and channel surf. There’s bound to be reruns of The Mary Tyler Moore Show on TV to cheer you up. A little Mary and the gang can take your nothing day and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile.
LEO (July 23 – August 22):
AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):
You bring the party with you wherever you go. Today will be no different as you liven up the workplace with your mirth and pranks. But some may not appreciate your brand of fun. Forcing them to wear wigs while warbling “There’s No Business Like Show Business” won’t be comical to them.
Keep a first date loose and informal tonight. Choose a dinner spot that’s fun, lively and non-threatening. Somewhere romantic with strolling violin players serenading you with songs of love may have him bolting for the door. Disappointing, but at least you’ll get to take home one helluva doggie bag.
VIRGO (August 23 – September 22):
PISCES (February 19 – March 19):
You’ll wake up today feeling aggressive and combative. But don’t take it out on those around you. Hitting the gym would be a healthier way of releasing hostility, and it’ll be a lot safer for those unfortunates who have to face you today.
Today will be puzzling to you, a mystery wrapped in a riddle. This confusion will extend into your social life where guys will be just as bewildering. You may finally meet the guy you contacted through Craigslist and you didn’t know that swimmer’s build meant having a body like Norm from Cheers.

Look boss, all I said was, “I bet my raise is as big as your dick.” Whether that’s an insult or not is entirely up to you.
He’s more of an “offbrand artificial sweetener” sugar daddy.
There is such a thing as loving yourself too much. To improve yourself you have to see your flaws. Love yourself enough to be critical.

It doesn’t mean shit that you’re a “personal trainer.” It’s a oneday class, and you’re broke with only two clients. #bye
If you’re so simpleminded that only one word of a language other than English “annoys” you, then kindly drown yourself.
When you lean out of your car and yell “faggots,” you’re also yelling “I have a tiny dick due to inbreeding.”
If you’re gonna put something cream-filled in your mouth today, there are better options with fewer calories. And I’m talking about a Hostess DingDong, obviously.
Alec Baldwin’s comments about the “Gay Department of Justice” seem a lot funnier if you imagine Jack Donaghy saying them. The problem with drunk Snapchatting is that you have no idea what you sent people. Could’ve been my ass.
