An Appropriate Response?
W
hen news about the death of Fred Phelps, the leader of Westboro Baptist Church (a.k.a. the “God Hates Fags” people), came out last week, the range of responses from the LGBT community was almost immediately apparent. I know some people who were glad to hear of Phelps’ death, going so far as to suggest picketing his funeral. At the opposite end of the spectrum, others were quick to say that we should try to avoid mimicking the behavior of Phelps and his congregation.
why some take pleasure or relief in the news. I just feel strange joining in.
Most weeks, I’ll receive some emails about some aspect of this column, but this week, I have a request: if you have an opinion on this matter, and you feel comfortable sharing it, send me an email with your thoughts on the matter. I’d like to hear different viewpoints on responding to Phelps’ death, if for no In all honesty, I’m torn on the whole issue. As much as I’d like other reason than to get a better idea of to ignore Phelps altogether, this story has been impossible to the pulse of our community. I look forescape while still staying connected to the world. Personally, ward to reading your messages. I don’t get any satisfaction out of the man’s death, so I can’t say that I’m happy to hear about it. It seems a bit too morbid for me anyway. I also don’t really have a desire to picket the man’s funeral. But I understand that desire to show the Phelps elijah@davidatlanta.com family some sign of what they’ve done to scores of families over the years. There’s a hope, however faint, that such a display may make something click in someone’s mind.
Elijah Sarkesian
Just based on gut instinct, I find myself falling more in line with those who want to be superior to Phelps. There are plenty of ways to communicate the inferiority of Phelps’ actions over the years without copying his actions. While I don’t feel that we, as a community, should have to prove ourselves to anyone, I’m wary about adding fuel to the fire that constitutes their beliefs when it’s not necessary. I doubt that most in our community would argue, though, that Phelps was toxic. It’s also safe to say that the views Phelps espoused were held by more than those who belonged to Westboro. We’re fortunate that the tide of public opinion on LGBT rights has shifted in our favor, in part because of Phelps’ extreme actions. But that doesn’t take away the pain that Phelps caused our community. And while I don’t feel that I was personally victimized by Fred Phelps, I can’t say the same for others. As of last week, one of the most prominent examples of hatred in America ceased to exist. I can understand 8 // 03.26.2014

he’s gorgeous, she’s bad ass and she’ll knock you down with just one drink. A self proclaimed “nerd,” Ashley Mitchell is one of Ten Atlanta’s resident bartenders. With a psychology degree under her belt, she’s definitely a bartender to check out. So what are you waiting for? Go have 3 Shots with Ashley Mitchell! What’s your favorite way to break the ice with someone? I’m weird and quirky, so at first I will usually start with an awkward wave, funny face or sticking my tongue out to break the ice. Once you smile or laugh I know that I’ve got you (as creepy as that may sound). I know that once you smile or laugh you feel at ease and comfortable with me which allows me to strike up a conversation while making your drink.
Tell us the craziest experience you’ve had as a bartender. When I worked in the EAV, a man came in with a few friends, ordered six double shots of Jameson. I assumed they were for the group; however, he then took each one back to back until they were all gone. Roughly ten minutes later this man was trying to fight the manager, some of the bar staff and a few patrons. Some drool, slurred obscenities and a few missed swings later he then passed out in the middle of the dance floor face first. It may not seem too crazy, but there is more detail that probably shouldn’t be published! Tell us three things people don’t know about you. 1. I’m a nerd. I love reading books, particularly of the science fiction and fantasy realm. I watch kung fu movies and science fiction movies like it’s not even funny. 10 // 03.26.2014

2. I was a gymnast until I was 16 when my body decided to grow another six or eight inches and give me the lovely curves I have now. Before that I was a short beanpole kind of girl. 3. I am the stereotypical bartender. I have a Bachelor’s in psychology. Though I may not polish glassware while listening to your problems, I will always listen and give advice where I can.

Pitch or Catch? Hotlanta Softball Takes LGBT Community Out to the Ballgame
By Dylan S. Goldman

ince first taking the field in 1981, the Hotlanta Softball League (HSL), has always strived to promote and emphasize equality in diversity. Since originally founded by Greg Troia over 30 years ago, their mission has always been to provide a fun, yet competitive, environment for LGBT athletes wishing to play softball.
HSL annually produces one of the, if not the, largest gay softball tournaments in the country: The Big Peach Tournament. This year’s tournament weekend begins on May 25th, and will be played at the Metro Atlanta Softball Complex, a.k.a. Metro Fields. Participating teams aren’t limited to Southern teams- the continually sold-out tournament attracts ball players from all over the country.
Thirty-three years later, HSL has yet to strike out in providing a safe, friendly and welcoming athletic environment for every color and flavor ball player Atlanta can turn out. HSL is devoted to amateur athletics, and places special emphasis on the participation of gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans players. Although they started small, HSL has proudly grown into the largest gay sports organization in Atlanta, and one of the largest in the Nation.
HSL isn’t just all fun and games, either. Members actively devote their time and energy raising money for local charities. “We want to continue to grow our charity involvement not only with financial contributions but volunteerism,” said HSL’s commissioner Kyle Miller. “This year I would like to focus our efforts on grass roots and getting our hands dirty.”

Plays Well With Others:
A look at Atlanta’s Gay Sporting Leagues By Dylan S. Goldman
P
laying with yourself can be fun, but it is so much more rewarding to play with others, especially when being gay is a non-issue because they’re gay, too!
Atlanta’s LGBT community is by far one of the most farreaching and well-developed inclusive communities in the Southeast. There are more gay-owned and operated sports leagues around Atlanta than one may think. Here’s some info on just a few of the leagues our city has to offer.

Decatur Women’s Sports League- Owned and operated by Anne Barr, more affectionately known as “Sarge”, the Decatur Women’s Sports League (DWSL) is truly a one-of-a-kind organization for the women, not just lesbians, of the Metro Atlanta area and beyond. DWSL offers seasonal activities, including Bowling (Winter and Summer), year-round Basketball and Softball (Spring, Fall and a truncated Summer season). They’re also presently holding a monthly poker night. DWSL is proud to contribute a great chunk change to charities – over $60,000 in their eight years – with funds allocated primarily to The Health Initiative, as well as the Humane Society, HRC, Girls Rock Camp, Chris Kids, GA Win, Rape Crisis Center, and so many more. Make new friends, get some exercise and have fun doing it! Women interested in the DWSL should visit decaturwomensports.com, or contact Anne Barr at 404-210-4722 or annebarr30345@gmail.com.
Atlanta Rainbow TroutSince 1995, the Atlanta Rainbow Trout has proudly been Atlanta’s premiere gay-friendly aquatics club. Launching as solely a competitive swimming and diving organization, the Atlanta Rainbow Trout has added several other aquatic activities over the years, including the Water Polo division in 1998 and a Triathlon team in 2003. The Rainbow Trout welcomes people of all levels, whether you consider the water your home away from home, or have never splashed around outside of a bathtub. However, you do have to be able to swim on your own for at least 50 yards, as the Trout do not offer swimming lessons- but they do have a coach who will work with you on your form and stroke. The trout trains at Georgia Tech’s state-of-the-art, indoor aquatic center, which was built for the 1996 Olympics. The aquatic center has a competition pool with stadium seating, a top-notch diving well, a leisure pool and spa and an outdoor patio. If you’re not built like a swimmer, don’t worry- wearing a Speedo is not required. For more information about the Rainbow Trout, visit atlantarainbowtrout.com.
Atlanta Bucks Rugby Football Club- Guys interested in getting a little rough and tumble on the field should check out the Atlanta Bucks Rugby Football Club, whose mission is, “to provide a fraternal environment, without discrimination, for gay and diverse communities, to participate in the sport of rugby.” Winners of the 2006 New York East Coast Invitational and 2008 Bingham Cup Bowl Division in Dublin, the non-profit organization formed in 2003, and since then has connected with thousands of people throughout the Southeast, enriching the lives of not only the players, but the beneficiaries of their charity and community outreach work as well. ABRFC conducts annual fundraisers including the Miss Ruck n Maul Pageant, all which benefit worthwhile youth-services organizations. The club is always looking for new members! Men interested in being a part of this unique brotherhood should visit atlantabucksrugby.org or email info@atlantabucksrugby.org.
National Flag Football League of Atlanta- Atlanta’s premiere gay sporting league, the National Flag Football League of Atlanta (NFFLA) is a Metro Atlanta-based, men’s 7-on-7 flag football league, that welcomes both gay and gayfriendly members. The NFFLA has over 100 members per season, breaking down into roughly eight teams, and ranging in age, ability and experience. All-inclusive and open, members of the NFFLA simply require an appreciation of the game and a willingness to learn and try. If you aren’t in the best of shape, don’t stress! Members come in all shapes and sizes, and by joining the league, you will be able to proactively reach those fitness goals you have while having fun and making new friends. Keeping in mind everyone’s busy schedules, practices are held once a week, with team communications mostly via email. New members need to have drawstring gym shorts without pockets and good running shoes or cleats; shirts, jerseys and flags will be provided by the league. Changes Coming to Mama’s: Former Taco Cabana Location Shifts to New Location
A
fter building up a late-night landmark over the course of two decades, a series of massive changes are coming for Mama’s, the establishment at the corner of Piedmont and Cheshire Bridge once known as Taco Cabana – including changes in name and location. Yes, a change in location. Beginning April 1, Mama’s will begin operating out of what was formerly La Perla Taqueria. While the change in locations is happening quickly, the move from its original location has been expected for some time now. The property, like the former shopping center it stands beside, is slated to become a new mixed-use project from developer Archstone. The plans were first announced back in 2012, with many of the businesses in the shopping center shutting down over the past year. “It’s not because I want it, because I’ve been there for 21 years,” says the woman customers simply know as Mama about the move. But with the new location being within walking distance of the old location, she’s at ease with the move. “I think it’s very good for the business. It’s only two blocks away – easy to find for my customers, because I have a lot of customers from around Buckhead, Midtown, and all the clubs. So it’s a perfect location.” 18 // 03.26.2014
By Dylan S. Goldman
Of course, there’s also the name change. As of last year, what was once Taco Cabana became Mama’s. Unlike Taco Cabana, which is part of a franchise with most of its locations in Texas, Mama’s is an independent restaurant. While Mama still holds fond memories of her time as part of the Taco Cabana franchise, there’s a reason for the shift. “Taco Cabana was a fantastic franchise. I’m very proud that I was the owner for so many years of Taco Cabana,” says Mama. “But they needed a lot of changes, and I knew the building was going to be torn down.” The change from franchise to self-owned restaurant, though, has proven beneficial for Mama. “I feel good. It’s a popular restaurant, and I have a lot of help from my husband, Juan, and my son, Papi. There’s a lot you can do with a restaurant when you own it that you can’t do when you franchise, because you have to go by the rules for the food and everything. And now, we have more, different foods, and everything is made from scratch.” With the change came a chance to redo the restaurant’s menu. While Mama’s includes versions of many of the Tex-Mex items that were found on the Taco Cabana menu, Mama and Papi have added other Latin foods such as tapas and empanadas to the menu to create a wider range of Latin foods for Mama’s. The relocation is also providing a chance to add new aspects to the Mama’s experience. While margaritas are already a part of the Mama’s menu, the new location will expand the options to include a range of frozen margaritas with 16 different flavors. Changing locations and expanding the menu are enough to keep any business owner busy, but Mama and Papi are managing the changes while also preparing for their annual Carnaval celebration for Cinco de Mayo at Las Margaritas, which they also own. That early May event has proven popular with Atlantans, and they’re looking for ways to make this year’s event even better. Be sure to keep an eye out for announcements in the coming weeks. And don’t worry, late night fans of Mama’s – while the location and name have changed, the establishment’s 24/7 operating schedule remains the same.

Jerusalem House Celebrates 25 Years By Nicholas Grant

R
inging in its 25th anniversary this year, Jerusalem House will celebrate its donors, corporate sponsors, volunteers and guests of its Board of Directors at The Silver Stars Party & Silent Auction, a one-night, fundraising event on Thursday, April 3 from 6–9 p.m. in the Georgian Ballroom at The Biltmore Atlanta. Guests will bid the night away while mingling and enjoying signature cocktails and light bites from local premier Atlanta caterers and restaurants. All proceeds raised from the auction will benefit Jerusalem House’s permanent supportive housing programs for homeless and lowincome men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS. Jerusalem House provides 151 units, or over 60%, of Atlanta’s permanent supportive housing for individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS. We are Atlanta’s oldest and largest HIV/ AIDS permanent supportive housing provider. In 1988, a coalition of Atlanta’s business, religious, civic, and medical community leaders conceptualize a residential facility for the growing number of people who have lost their homes due to AIDS. The original Jerusalem House is one house for five persons located in the Druid Hills/Virginia Highlands area of Atlanta. The name chose for the non-denominational facility is Jerusalem House because the word “Jerusalem” means “dwelling of peace.” Charlie Few, Executive Director of Jerusalem House explains that the charity operates on a very personal basis with the people it serves. “The Housing Programs of Jerusalem House do more for individuals and families than simply provide homes. In addition to homelessness, poverty and HIV/ AIDS, many residents struggle with substance abuse, or have experienced domestic violence and mental health issues. Our staff individually tailors programs with each resident so he/

she will have the opportunity to chart a path to recovery at the pace that fits his/her situation. All residents have access to vital supportive services provided by our staff members and collaboratively through 20+ formal partnerships with other Atlanta agencies. Examples of services include case management and counseling, education, budgeting classes, HIV/ AIDS specific services, and food/clothing assistance.” Brad Jones, who serves as President for the Jerusalem House Board of directors adds “Over the past 25 years, advances in HIV/AIDS health care have significantly improved the quality of life for those affected by the disease. Now, individuals face the challenges of living with HIV/AIDS. As the needs of those we serve have changed, Jerusalem House has changed. Our programs now include an adult program, a family program, and multiple scattered site units which serve either individuals or any family configuration. We have a client base as diverse as the community in which our residents reside. Our clients may be single mothers and their children or elderly single adults. Our programs serve people of all races, sexual orientations, and functional aptitudes. Some of our clients will require supportive care indefinitely; others will leverage the services we provide to regain self-sufficiency and return to independent living. Our success in addressing the ever changing needs of those impacted by HIV/AIDS in our community is directly attributable to our highly skilled and dedicated staff, led by Executive Director Charlie Frew, and the support of our sponsors and donors.”

The Art of Gettin’ Crafty:
Atlanta Welcomes the Third Annual Spring Festival on Ponce

ith the noncommittal weather we’ve had so far this year, it’s almost with trepidation that we enter Spring, our typical season of warm breezes, blooming flowers and countless outdoor festivals.
“We hope that neighbors and visitors will come see the extraordinary gardens of Olmstead Linear Park and stay to peruse the 150 local artists who will take up residence there for the weekend,” said President of the Atlanta Foundation for Public Space, Patrick Dennis. “We are very proud that our local artists will be able to draw attention to both the historic parks and the Druid Back for a third year, The Atlanta Foundation for Public Spaces Hills community in a positive way.” (AFPS) proudly announces this year’s Spring Festival on Ponce on April 5th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the 6th from 11 a.m. to If you’re interested in buying some art, but don’t feel like carry6 p.m. in historic Olmstead Linear Park. Staying Financially Secure
W
ith the deadline for filing income taxes just around the corner, it’s a good time for people to look at their finances. For LGBT families, last year’s Supreme Court rulings on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) have brought about a number of changes they should take into careful consideration. For legally married samesex couples, particularly those living in states that recognize same-sex marriages, they’re now eligible for the same federal benefits and protections that other married couples have enjoyed for years. Before you get too excited, though, keep in mind that it’s not that easy just yet for same-sex couples. Government agencies are in the process of reviewing and modifying their rules and regulations. Private employers, meanwhile, will also need to review – and potentially revise – their policies, benefits and paperwork. So what can you do to help protect your financial interests? We checked with Jeremy Reese from Mitman, Reese, and Associates, an Ameriprise Financial Services wealth management practice based in Atlanta, for their advice, and they offered a number of tips. Jeremy specializes in LGBT financial planning, navigating around common challenges faced within the community.
By Elijah Sarkesian Once you have professional advice, build a plan that works with your state’s laws. Keep this in mind, particularly if you’re moving – what works in one state may not be effective in another. So what should you include in your plan? You have a number of things to consider, including estate planning and end-oflife issues. This is where an estate-planning expert comes in to help. For your estate, you’ll want to make sure that your beneficiary information is kept up-to-date so any insurance proceeds, bank accounts and retirement accounts can go to your surviving partner. You’ll also want to make sure any other property is property set up to pass through a trust or held in joint tenancy with rights of survivorship. Your will should be constructed properly to avoid any estate planning disputes. Powers of attorney and healthcare directives should also be set up to let your partner make the appropriate legal, financial and healthcare-related decisions if you can’t. Finally, bring in a family law specialist if children are a part of your family – they can help set up parental rights documentation.
You’ll also want to check on both life and health insurance. Life insurance can help cover costs for a partner in the event of one’s death. Meanwhile, health insurance rates may be better under a combined plan than each partner carrying a separate policy. But in both cases, make sure to check all of the costs, including anything that could be counted as taxable First, know your state’s laws. A Thrilling Musical
I
n 1924 Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, two wealthy University of Chicago law students, kidnapped and murdered 14 year old Robert “Bobby” Franks. Though it may seem like odd material for a musical, this real life event is the basis of Thrill Me: The Leopold and Loeb Story, which is being produced by Newnan Theatre Company April 3–13.
The tale of Leopold and Loeb’s reprehensible offense is not new material for interpretation. Perhaps the most famous incarnation of the story was Alfred Hitchcock’s film Rope, which was based loosely on the crime. For this adaptation, Stephen Dolginoff has created the book, music and lyrics that transports audiences back to Chicago and into the minds of two of the most notorious killers in American history. Why did Dolginoff decide to tackle such heavy subject matter? “I thought it would be fun to do. I was planning on writing something about a relationship between two people, and then later a true crime story. With this particular story, it was both! And I thought it would be really interesting and fun to write a two character musical.”
By Nicholas Grant
kiss, its my job to give it all I have and make it as natural as possible.” Demlow adds, “This show is a challenge like I have never been presented before. These are real people and many people view them in a very negative light, but it is my job as the actor to bring humanity to Nathan and try my hardest to get you to like him and feel for him.” “Sex is humans’ most powerful and natural weapon. My character understands that if you used tactfully, sex has the power to wrap anyone around his finger and it is especially easy to manipulate Nathan when he is so desperate for my love and affection,’ concludes Johnson. Directed by Paul Conroy, former Artistic Director of Newnan Theatre Company, Thrill Me has been on his list of shows to direct for a long time.
“I love this show and the fact that it’s based on actual facts is nothing short of fascinating. These were two ‘normal’ boys, like millions before and after them. But somewhere something went horribly wrong and now they are forever embedded Stepping into the shoes of Leopold and Loeb are Jacob Demlow in our cultural history – for better or worse.” and Devin Johnson, both theatre students at Columbus State. fairyscopes ARIES (March 20 – April 19):
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22):
You’ve tried stealth, cunning and the telling of tall tales to impress that guy, and not surprisingly, none of those tactics worked. How about showing him a little charm today? Letting him see the real you, and not the person you think he might want you to be, could have you going the distance.
You’re riding a tidal wave of positive vibes today, baby, and it’s 1967 all over again. Trip the light fantastic today. Smell the roses, give a dollar to a homeless guy, listen to some far-out music and generally let your freak flag fly. That guy with the Birkenstocks and puka shells necklace at the coffee shop will tune in to your grooviness.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20):
SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21):
You sound like Darth Vader as you climb stairs, and you take the elevator to your office on the first floor. It could be time to start thinking about your health. Working out consistently is a must, as is proper diet. Hire a personal trainer if you feel you need motivation. In the long run, it’ll be cheaper than the medical bills after the inevitable heart attack.
Your ever changing moods have you both angel and devil today, and even you can’t tell where one ends, and the other begins. This is not the type of versatility you want to be known for, but at least you know why people cower under their desks when you enter a room. Be one or the other today, but not both. This way people will know exactly who they’re dealing with.
GEMINI (May 21- June 20):
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20):
You will find yourself focused on your partner today, as well you should. Your many long, rich years together total nearly 150 when calculated in gay years. The romance is still hot and heavy, and while you may be a little slow in getting started, you still know how to push each other’s buttons. Tell him how you feel today, through words, and tried-and-true actions.
Ideas will come easily today as communication flows free and easy between you and your coworkers. It will seem like you’re all tuned into the same big picture today, and a lot will be accomplished. They will look to you to be the leader, and you will hand out responsibilities in a fair and unbiased manner.
CANCER (June 21- July 22):
CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):
Your partner may not share your aesthetic sensibilities, which makes feathering the nest a challenge. You want modern contemporary with a dash of Swedish chic, while he’s firmly rooted in neon beer signs and velvet Elvis. Try to reach a balance today that doesn’t entail bribes, temper tantrums or locking him in the garage.
Ru Paul has a better chance of delivering the keynote address at the Republican convention than you do of getting a pay raise today. Disappointing, yes, but your conduct during post-work drinks last week sort of sealed that deal. The best you can do is to put your nose to the grindstone. Working harder will prove your worthiness, and salvage your damaged reputation.
LEO (July 23 – August 22):
AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):
Have you ever wondered why everyone agrees with every thing you say? Is it because you’re always right, or because it’s the only way they know to shut you up? Let others have a say today. A free flow of communication let’s everyone participate in the conversation, and you may discover that your friends are just as witty and intelligent as you.
A man from a different culture has entered your life, and you’re smitten. At first you thought the accent was cute, but it’s gotten frustrating deciphering his every sentence. Don’t give up, because this relationship holds a lot of promise. While you can barely understand what he’s saying, there are inventive ways of communicating without saying a word.
VIRGO (August 23 – September 22):
PISCES (February 19 – March 19):
You’ve never learned from past experiences of impulse buying disasters. Witness the $150 hoodie you’ve never worn. You’re a dangerous man with a credit card, which may be an indicator of a deeper self-control problem. Take your partner or a friend along on your shopping sprees. They may be able to stop you before you buy that deluxe fondue set.
Your relationship sometimes resembles an abstract painting, a mad jumble of shapes, colors and squiggles that somehow makes sense. People on the outside will gaze upon your painting, and scratch their heads while muttering ‘What the hell is that?’ But you and your partner will just laugh, and splash more paint on the canvas.

Ever notice how disproportionate some people look when they lose weight? Good job losing that weight – at least you looked normal before.
So your profile states you’re neg/ STD free. Why does your cock pic have HPV bumps? Maybe you should reconsider your STD status.
If porn is about fantasy, then my favorite would include cleaning up my credit score and losing weight by eating cake.
Nothing is more disappointing than a selfproclaimed “power top” with a whiny voice.
I know what I want: penis. I’m just not entirely sold on whose yet.
Please don’t mistake my personality for flirting. Just because I’m awesome doesn’t mean I like you.
