What Do You Want?
A
s David Atlanta continues to grow and evolve, we want to know what you want to see in the magazine each week. There are, of course, some staples to the magazine that we keep in each week. Some are classics that date back years, like Bitch Session and our Seen@ pages. Others are more recent, like Favorite Bitch or our biweekly publication of Kyle’s Bed & Breakfast.
All of that to say…we cover a lot, and we want to know more of what you like so that we can cater to our readers. As we plan ahead for our summer coverage, I want to hear from you about what you like (or dislike) about the magazine. If you have an idea for what you’d like to see more of in print or online, tell me. Who knows – your suggestion may end up changing what we do as a publication.

Beyond that, I know I hear a lot of dif- elijah@davidatlanta.com ferent opinions about what you all like to see in our book each week. Over the past year, we’ve tried out a few things that some of you like, such as crossword puzzles, Creep of the Week, and weekly entertainment reviews. In terms of what we cover that shifts from week to week, we’ve published community-oriented pieces, celebrity interviews, rundowns of major events, photo shoots, a whole lot of drag queen coverage and more. That’s not including our web coverage, where we publish expanded Seen@ galleries, extended celebrity interviews and web exclusives like OUTtakes, our weekly film preview/ review column. 8 // 05.07.2014

or over a decade now, Oyle Harrison has spent most of his nights slinging drinks around Atlanta, the last six of which he’s spent behind the bar at Little Five Point’s Corner Tavern. Between his welcoming energy and the fluidity of his every move, it’s obvious that Oyle is truly at home behind a bar. In a profession that can really take it’s toll on a body, Oyle’s warm smile and quick-tolaugh personality makes it apparent that work hasn’t worn him down one bit. He is like a battery that never dies, he seems almost omnipotent – the guy somehow bikes over 20 miles every day on top of keeping long, late-night hours! When he’s not at the bar or on his bike, you can find Oyle at his sewing machine, stitching together a new, hot leather outfit to wear to his other favorite spot, the Atlanta Eagle.

PALS: Providing Loving Support for Atlanta
Piedmont Bark: Taking Care of Atlanta’s Dogs
Let’s face it: pet parents can’t always find or give the time to their animals that they require. Whether it’s work, school, a demanding social calendar or even illness, life sometimes just gets in the way. And when it does, your four-legged friends happen to be in luck.
Midtown’s Piedmont Bark, a local doggy daycare and boarding facility on Amsterdam Walk, raises both awareness and money for PALS by hosting several Yappy Hour fundraising events at their facility. One of the Yappy Hour events held annually is the Pet Cotillion event.
Those who become unable to care for their pets due to critical illness, old-age or disabilities can count on the loving staff and volunteers at Pets are Loving Support (PALS) to pick up the leash and get the ball rolling again when it comes to their pets’ routine.
Open seven days a week, Piedmont Bark provides much more than daycare and boarding for your furry friend – they are a second home for your dog.

David Atlanta: You’re a Georgia native. With your career taking you so many places, what is it like coming back to Georgia to perform? Rob Evan: Well, I’m super thrilled. I’m thrilled to be back in Atlanta because I’m a Georgia boy, even though I’ve lived in New York for 20 years. I get a little nervous every time I perform for an Atlanta audience, because that’s my home. DA: You’ve performed as part of the Rock Tenors a few times before. How did this act come together? RE: I’m involved in a lot of rock/Broadway projects, because those are my two “things,” and I’ve been involved in the symphonic world for a long time. But this is only our third outing with the Rock Tenors. We did this a year and a half ago at Calgary, and the principal Pops conductor at the Atlanta Symphony, Michael Krajewski, is also the principal Pops conductor at a lot of other places. He brought us together. He knows my voice from doing a show called Broadway Rocks, and also created what the Symphony’s called Beatles & Friends.

And he brought two other “rock tenors” in. Shem von Schroeck, who is a bass player for Kenny Loggins’ band, and he’s about to go out on tour with Don Felder, Styx and Foreigner. He’s this great, super-talented guy who plays every instrument and sings wonderfully. And then we have Micah Wilshire, who is from Nashville. Micah’s been on tour with Michael Bolton, and he’s had some hits with his own band, Wilshire.
But we came together a year and a half ago at Calgary, and Maestro Krajewski had put this program together for us, and it just went really well. MEGAN HILTY The Blondest of Bombshells
I
BY NICHOL AS GR ANT
n just a few short years, Megan Hilty has taken both Broadway and Hollywood by storm, by stepping into the shoes of some of the most iconic (and blondest) females in pop culture. Her story is a fairy tale of sorts, and what better place to start a fairy tale than somewhere over the rainbow?
“All of those characters are iconic. It’s terrifying. Thinking that you wont please anyone but also freeing knowing that you can’t please everyone makes it okay to put your spin on it. Wicked set it up. I was trying to do what Kristin [Chenoweth] did, but it wasn’t funny, it wasn’t touching. I would go back to the script and make it my own. It’s better that way. The AV200:
Racing for a Cure
I
photos: Action Cycling Atlanta
n 2003, a group of cyclists decided to form Action Cycling Atlanta, a 501(c)(3) to raise funds for AIDS vaccine research at the Emory Vaccine Center. The group had participated in the 2002 European AIDS Vaccine Ride, whose producer, Pallotta Teamworks, included the Emory Vaccine Center among its beneficiaries. When Pallotta Teamworks dissolved due to cost overruns, the local cyclists decided to fill the fundraising void that was left. Combining a two-day ride across Georgia with fundraising for HIV/AIDS vaccine research, the AIDS Vaccine 200 (or AV200) was born. This year, the AV200 takes place May 17–18. The ride begins at Emory University, with cyclists and volunteers passing through small towns throughout Georgia such as Stone Mountain and Social Circle before arriving at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center in the Oconee National Forest Saturday night. Cyclists and volunteers lodge Saturday night in cabins at Rock Eagle, before journeying back to Emory on Sunday. Cyclists have different mileage options to ensure their journey works for their abilities. The full ride includes 100mile rides each day, for a total of 200 miles. Cyclists can also choose a shorter 80-mile route for each day, or 160 miles total. For those who want a more adjustable distance to ride, cyclists can form relay squads of up to five riders. The squad then divides the 100-mile distance each day into relay segments for as long as each cyclist chooses to ride. There are also two new additions this year: a 30-mile Rally Ride and a 62-mile Metric Century. These one-day rides both take place on Sunday, May 18, and leave from Emory University.
28 // 05.07.2014
Through 2013, the AV200 has raised $1,630,440. The majority of the funds have gone to the Emory Vaccine Center, one of the largest academic vaccine centers in the world. Additional portions of ride proceeds go to different AIDS service organizations, with Jerusalem House and Positive Impact both being recent beneficiaries. If you’re a cyclist and you’re interested in joining, or if you’re looking to volunteer, there’s still time to sign up for this year’s event. Just visit actioncycling.org to find out more information, and to sign up.

Inside MAAP’s Second Annual Nonprofit Showcase
T
he Metro Atlanta Association of Professionals, or MAAP, will be hosting their second annual Nonprofit Showcase. Formally known as the Atlanta Executive Network, or AEN, this will be the first showcase under the organization’s rebranded name. The AEN was turned into the MAAP after the term “executive” was deemed to give an “incorrect impression of what the group is about.” The Nonprofit Showcase starts at 6 p.m. on May 15 at Jungle Atlanta. The Showcase provides an opportunity for people to learn about and get involved with various nonprofit organizations that are in Atlanta. Along side the nonprofit organizations, there will also be light bites and a cash bar for patrons to enjoy. Current MAAP president, Joshua Lorenz, stated, “We started this Showcase because organizations were asking us independently for opportunities to address our membership. We thought what better way than to have an annual event solely focused on Atlanta’s nonprofits. Every year we invite nonprofit LGBT friendly entities to tell their story. This is a great way for each charity to find new volunteers, new donors and new participants for their events. This will be our second year of this event and based on last year it will be another great opportunity to learn how you can get involved with the community.” This year, some of the organizations included are the Atlanta Freedom Bands, a nonprofit LGBT band that plays for anything from parades to sit-down concerts, and Just As You Are, a religious organization with more of a coffeehouse vibe instead a judgmental organized religious feel. Previous showcases have also included organizations such as the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus, Lost-n-Found Youth, DREAM, For The Kid In All of Us, Gay Fathers of Atlanta, Team Friendly Atlanta, CHRIS Kids, The Trevor Project, Georgia Equality, The

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Atlanta Pride, Out on Film and Young People Matter, Inc. We can expect to see just as many nonprofits this year that are working hard to help people and create change. Founded in 1992, the AEN was an organization for LGBT business professionals to showcase what the community had to offer and to expand their business networks. The AEN rebranded itself as the Metro Atlanta Association of Professionals in favor of the more inclusive name. The organization’s committee emphasized keeping their doors open to anyone interested in expanding their business and professional career. It became an open forum that allowed its members to not only aid and support each other, but to also combat negative stereotypes of the LGBT community and employment discrimination. During the organization’s history as AEN, MAAP has also had a string of notable speakers to address its members. These speakers include former Georgia governor Roy Barnes, former Atlanta mayor Shirley Franklin, currently Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed, Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus, Jane Fonda, mother of gay murder victim Matthew Shepard, Judy Shepard, and Harvey Milk’s nephew, Stuart Milk. The showcase costs guest $10 if tickets are purchased in advanced, or $15 at the door. For more information about the MAAP and their events, visit their page at meetup. com/maapATL/.

MJ Villanueva: From Culinary Arts to Fusion on Canvas By Elijah Sarkesian
E
ach year, the Atlanta Foundation for Public Spaces presents a number of different events spread throughout the year that give Atlantans a chance to interact with the city and surround themselves with local art. Their upcoming event is a special one: the Buckhead Spring Arts & Crafts Festival at Chastain Park on Saturday, May 10 and Sunday, May 11 marks this particular event’s fifth anniversary. This award-winning, free festival brings together 175 artists and artisans, live acoustic music, a children’s area, and local foods and drinks. Among the artists presenting their work at the Buckhead Spring Arts & Crafts Festival is MJ Villanueva. Villanueva’s artwork is focused in painting contemporary abstracts, with a fusion of color, texture and movement. For this native of Hawaii, the move to Atlanta came courtesy of his partner. “My partner was originally from Atlanta, and he works for CNN,” says Villanueva. “He brought me over here.” While Villanueva worked in a number of different culinary jobs, including teaching culinary arts in the Atlanta Public School system, he felt a need to reconnect to his love of art. “I’ve always had a love for art. Having a culinary arts degree, I wanted to get back into it. I was working full-time, doing what everyone else does, just doing their 9-to-5 job. But at the same time, I had this drive to create my own art.”
32 // 05.07.2014
He started showcasing his art at small festivals periodically. At one of those events, he met a few people who would change his professional life. “Randall Fox and Patrick Dennis, who started AFFPS, saw my work at a festival and said, ‘Hey, we want to put you on. We love your work, and we want to feature Atlanta artists,’” says Villanueva. “So I hopped on board and started doing their inaugural shows at Atlantic Station. And that just snowballed into something else, and I thought, ‘Hey, I have a pretty good thing.’” Among the strengths of festivals put on by AFFPS, according to Villanueva, is the ability to showcase art at a number of festivals without worrying about significant travel expenses. “The guys offer something to local artists, and we don’t have to travel anywhere. Some artists have to travel from state to state, doing these big festivals, which is great. But we can do something fresh, something that’s artists for artists, or artists for the hometown. They got me to really start small, and work my way big. And years later, I’m doing this professionally now. I get to do what I like to do, and be free with it. The guys are really great at helping out communities.” Being gay, Villanueva loves seeing the local LGBT community involved in AFFPS events, including one of Midtown’s most famous street performers. “One of my favorite things is Baton Bob was there at Piedmont Park last year and the year before. And everyone loves Baton Bob. So the artists had a little parade, and all of the rainbow people would come out and support that. “So being gay, it’s a good thing to come out and say, ‘Hey, guess what? You’re not only supporting the arts, which we all love theater and music, but really to show more culture too.” Beyond using his art as an outlet for his creativity, Villanueva also uses the proceeds of his art sales to help others. He’s a frequent supporter of charities preserving habitats for Hawaiian owls. He also supports LGBT-related charities, and with any sales that come from the Buckhead Spring Arts and Crafts Festival or the upcoming Peachtree Hills Festival of the Arts (May 31–June 1), Villanueva is donating 20% of his profits to nonprofits benefiting the LGBT photo: Project Q Atlanta community.

The Buckhead Spring Arts and Crafts Festival runs May 10–11 at Chastain Park, from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free, open to all ages, and pets are welcome. For more information, please visit buckheadartsfestival.com.

Christina Perri: Head or Heart
S
he exploded on to the pop scene back in 2010 after one of her songs, the slow heartbroken ballad “Jar of Hearts”, was used on an episode of So You Think You Can Dance. With that, Christina Perri’s journey began. The single sold 3 million copies and spent over three months in the Top 40. Because of the attention her single was getting, she signed with Atlantic Records. She recently released her newest album Head or Heart, with her lead single “Human” burning up the charts. But is it a hit or a flop? Will the sophomore slump affect Miss Perri? Let’s find out.
By Dylan Michael
is what happened – and I love every minute of it! The hook instantly starts to make you bop back and forth, while the lyrics warm your heart.
The next track is the first single, which you’ve probably already heard on radio, “Human.” It’s a beautiful midtempo ballad, where she shows off her amazing vocal chops and, finally, I feel like she found her niche. Another track on the album is “I Don’t Wanna Break,” which is as sweet a love song as I’ve heard in a while. The production is very Coldplay, in the way that she has a big, big sound behind her, and she shines. The lyrics are so soaked with love that The album starts off with the song “Trust.” The first thing you can’t help but get the warm fuzzies. I noticed was how much better her voice is now that she’s had experience. Her tone is better and she sounds more The second to last track is entitled “Shot Me in The Heart”. confident. The song itself isn’t extravagant or anything It’s a cute electro based song with a throwback kind of that jumps off the page as “single-worthy”, but it is full feel. She shows off her amazing vocals and songwritof beautiful, folk-inspired harmonies and lyrics that touch ing chops once again by creating a catchy, pop song. something in you. All in all, her project is solid. There are some hits, and only The next track is called “Burning Gold” which is a song a few misses. I don’t see her releasing eight singles from about taking control of your life, and destiny, and going the same album like some other artists (ahem, Rihanna), for it. It’s not an extraordinary new concept, that whole but the songs she does choose to release will fair well. I self-empowerment thing, but she provides a great hook think she’s finally found her niche, and thank God for the that’s (almost) disco inspired. This song doesn’t show off “Popificiation of Christina Perri”! any amazing vocals, but it’s a cute track. Songs to check out: “Human,” “Be My ForImmediately following is a song called “Be My Forever” ever,” “I Don’t Wanna Break,” “Shot Me In featuring, the folksy ginger himself, Ed Sheeran. I wish The Heart” instead of “Head Or Heart”, she would have named the album “The Popificiation of Christina Perri,” because that

Locke: On the eve of the biggest challenge of his career, Ivan Locke (Tom Hardy) receives a phone call that sets in motion a series of events that will unravel his family, job, and soul. Moms’ Night Out: So far, advertising has hinted at this being a painfully unfunny “comedy” about a bunch of moms out for a night. What the ads hide: it’s a religious film in the vein of recent box office hits God’s Not Dead and Heaven is for Real.

Your partner has suggested opening up your relationship, and you couldn’t be more hurt or insulted. It may be time to think about your place in this partnership. It’s supposed to be one-on-one, not the one and the many. Go off by yourself today, and ask yourself some tough questions. If you’re not man enough for him, surely you are for someone else.
GEMINI (May 21- June 20):
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20):
Bigmouth strikes again as busybodies are very busy spreading gossip and rumors about you. There’s something slightly flattering about being the focus of such attention, but keep some perspective today. Protesting and defending your name will only fuel the fire. Your true friends will recognize it as the idle chatter of empty minds, and pay it no mind.
Life will need a magnifying glass today, as the small details will present the biggest problems. Seeing the forest for the trees isn’t always easy; there’s always distractions lurking in the woods, and they’re rarely wearing clothes. It won’t be as hard as you think if you keep your mind on the minutia.
CANCER (June 21- July 22):
CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):
You’re a true original. As such, some of your ideas are rooted in an originality that can only be called unique. Okay, maybe the electronic dog walker didn’t quite pan out. There were people who thought Michelangelo was a kook, too. Keep the fires of the idea factory stoked today.
Your discipline will be sorely tested today as a sexy, magnetic stranger tests your fidelity. He’s smooth and he’s suave and he’s oh-so persuasive. Look past the muscles, the tight jeans and the tired come-on lines. The one who really loves you is waiting at home, and that’s where you need to be. Right now.
LEO (July 23 – August 22):
AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):
Your almost celebrity-like status has you the belle of the ball today, and everywhere you go you have hot men vying for your attention. Be careful of overindulgence, as there can’t be enough food, enough wine, enough everything. Get a little exercise in today. Too much of the good life will eventually settle in your waistline, and you can’t lose that boyish figure.
While others yawn while elders tell stories of their past, you hang on every word. There’s so much you can learn from their tales; they’ve been places and done things you only dream about. Live vicariously through them today by using their words to fuel your own imagination. They could give you inspiration to write, or to travel to the places they’ve been.
VIRGO (August 23 – September 22):
PISCES (February 19 – March 19):
You’re a practical guy, and sometimes there’s no room for spontaneity in your well thought out and deeply analyzed world. You bring these admirable aspects to your love life, and maybe that’s why you’re not having enough naughty fun. Drop your inhibitions today. Your pants might just go with them.
Throughout history people have used beautiful words to woo other people, whether an individual or a mass audience. Either way, it’s all about exposing your soul to someone else, and that puts you in a vulnerable place. The risk will be worth it today, so tell Mr. Special how you feel. Write him a letter or poem that he can keep and cherish. Or just tell him.

hen spring chickens hatch, the first think they do is feed off of drama and not the scattered corn of good advice. I’ve realized over the years to let them go ahead and learn the hard way because they don’t listen for shit. This is Favorite Bitch - not the House of Tiger where I play den mother to kinderqueens and their foolery. Hunties, this week is all about Troublesome Twinks! They may be serving #TenderoniRealness, however, it doesn’t take long to go from savory chicken dumplings to a discarded bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken! Dear Miss Tiger, I’m 22, a college student and work a part-time job. I live paycheck to paycheck! My roommate knew this when I moved in. We always end up fighting whenever I come home with any type of shopping bag. He accuses me of spending my rent money in the mall. He doesn’t understand that I’m buying on credit and not with real money. Help! -Chance Dear Chances Are You’re A Hot Fucking Mess, You’re young, fabulous and won’t listen to a goddamn thing somebody tries to tell you. One thing’s for sure, though Make your credit card payments on time, bitch! There’s nothing less attractive than a motha fuckah with bad credit ...
Dear Reality Check, After Tony nuts in your boypussy, then gets dressed to go home to his husband and gives you money to “buy yourself something pretty” ... do you feel like his BOYFRIEND or his WHORE? NEXT! Dear Miss Tiger, I’m a twink and I just came out! I’ve only fucked guys who shaved their pubic hair. I don’t know how I even got crabs from somebody! Where do crabs come from? I love your column, Miss Tiger! Can you help me too? -Christopher in Baton Rouge, Louisiana Dear Hmmm ... I Wonder What Your SAT Score Was, I don’t know where they come from! Hell, with the countless cracks and crevices your dick has seen, who the fuck knows where you picked up those critters, sugar pie! I am certain of one thing though ... you got ‘em from being a slut and not from attending the annual Creole Gumbo Festival! (FYI, crabs can attach themselves to any body hair including eyelashes!) If you really want the answer, look to a calendar and peek inside your Andrew Christian Trophy Boy Brief. By the way, at the rate you’re going, you may wanna buy RID in bulk ... and remember to RINSE & REPEAT!
P.S. I love you too, boo! If ‘real money’ is what you’re after, then take that twink-ass down to a gay strip club and make those coins, hunty! Give Need advice? Write, Tweet or Facebook me and get some of the jackpot to your roommate and not the boys you the goddamn answers you’ve been looking for! flirt with during your shopping sprees at the mall. The extra cash will keep that bitter roommate off your back. Speaking of your back, try lying on it and maybe you can find a sugar daddy who’ll pay for your retail therapy AND an apartment Advice columnist • SiriusXM radio personality ... of your own. NEXT! and everyone’s #FAVORITEBITCH Website: FavoriteBitch.com Facebook: /MissTiger Dear Miss Tiger, Advice : ask@misstiger.com My boyfriend is way older than me - like 20 years and some change. His crew thinks I’m a whore who’s using Tony for his money. It ain’t my fault he gives me that paper. It’s also not my fault that him and his man are in an open relationship. You got some advice on how I can get his friends to believe we’re for real? -Joaquín

I don’t mind heterosexuals, just as long as they don’t act super straight or weird around me. If I speak to you in English, then why do you insist on responding in Spanish? I’m not going to suddenly learn the language.
I am very much looking forward to the abundance of half-naked hotties on Instagram!

The only thing worse than a condom is AIDS.
I hate every bone in his body except mine.
It’s such a shame when a strict top with a nice ass isn’t using it.
I learned that if I twerk while peeing at the bar, everyone else doing coke gets so mad. Grow up – just pee.
Like my gay mother says, don’t give these queens an inch ‘cause they’ll take nine.
I hate when people say, “You’re too cute to be single.” Then why don’t you date me?!?
