Time to Travel

T

his week’s book is all about travel. Okay, not all about travel – but it is a big part of what we’re covering this week. I’ll admit, it’s fun putting issues like this together because, while Atlanta is great and large and diverse, it becomes difficult to appreciate it when you’re here all the time. Getting away from Atlanta every once in awhile, hopefully with things like work remaining here as well, isn’t always easy, but it’s something that can help in the long run. Of course, the vacation you choose should fit you. I know that for me, traveling to cities and being able to roam brings me immense satisfaction. Just drop me in a city where I can wander around all day, and I’ll make the most of it. When selecting our locations for David Destinations this year, I kept that in mind. While we can’t cover something

for every single interest – we are a diverse community, after all – I wanted to make sure we featured different types of events that would appeal to different people. My hope is that you’ll find a trip somewhere that appeals to you. If not, I hope you’ll still look for a trip that will help you relax and have a fun time.

f you think that Backstreet stole the ultimate “rush” that only Atlanta’s club scene could provide, think again. Zachary Herrera is serving up the fuel to that after-hours rhythmic bumping, late night heart-thumping fire at Rush Lounge in East Buckhead on Buford Highway.

When he’s not working out his body, you can find Zach working out his mind. A Chemistry major at Georgia State University, Zach’s education translates from behind the lab table to behind the bar, studying potions by day and concocting them by night.

Can you accurately pour someone “their” drink before they order it, and what would be the drink that could be pre-poured for you? I can only do that with some customers…the ones who come to my bar all of the time and who always drink the same thing. I have a customer on Sunday nights who always comes to me and orders the same thing every time: Hennessy & Red Bull. For me, Washington Apple as a drink or any Raspberry vodka with pineapple. (A Washington Apple is equal parts Crown Royal® Canadian whisky, DeKuyper® Sour Apple Pucker schnapps and cranberry juice.) What are three things people don’t know about you? I’m from Venezuela. I am not from Mexico! I love frozen yogurt. I’m addicted to several series on HBO: Looking, Game of Thrones, Girls and True Blood. What’s the worst thing a customer can do? I regularly witness bad manners. But the worst behavior I have witnessed at a bar is when I get a customer who is talking loudly on their cellphone and trying to order from me at the same time. It is rude and drives me crazy. 10 // 05.14.2014

Soak Up the Sun at Key West Pride

KEY WEST, FLORIDA

BY ELIJAH SARKESIAN

W

ith June coming up soon, once again we’ll have a number of options for celebrating Pride in other cities. While there are many worthwhile options, both local and far away, one of the most relaxing times you may have takes place each year in Key West. The tiny island, adjacent to the southernmost tip of Florida, only spans a distance of four miles by two miles, but it’s home to an increasingly popular destination worldwide for Pride events, taking place this year June 11–15. “Key West is world-renowned for its events like Key West Pride,” says Guy Ross, the executive director of the Key West Business Guild, the oldest LGBT destination marketing organization in North America. “Over the years, our island parties have developed and grown into international events. And each year, even more people discover the charms and unique energy of these events.”

During Key West Pride 2003, a custom rainbow flag spanning the entire 1.25 mile length of Duval St. was unfurled. Since then, sections of the flag have been sent all over North America.

Indeed, with its location between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, Key West Pride offers a number of options for those looking to spend some time in or on the water. Daily events throughout the Pride celebration include sailing, snorkeling and kayaking, along with the option of swimming in the ocean or tanning on the beach.

at 9 p.m. How about fetish gear? Try Saloon One on Friday night, beginning at 11 p.m. And if the combination of swimming and nudity appeals to you at all, not-so-gentle men, be sure to check out Island House’s events throughout the week.

If you’d prefer to stay dry during the day, there are plenty of other opportunities to engage with the island. You can discover the history of the island through East Martello Fort, the Key West History Museum, or you can visit Custom House, home of the Key West Art & Historical Society. Key West also offers an aquarium, a lighthouse, and a butterfly and nature conservatory.

Capping the weekend is the Key West Pride Parade, where the small-town feel of the island merges with one massively popular event. The Parade is most famous for its custom rainbow flag, which when revealed in 2003 spanned the length of Key West’s Duval St. – in other words, from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic. And you thought the rainbow flag in Atlanta Pride’s parade was huge.

And what about the events made specifically for Key West Want to learn more about Key West Pride’s festivities? Pride? There are plenty of opportunities for fun each day – and Ready to book a hotel? Visit Key West Pride online at keyeach night. Into drag? Check out the show at Aqua on Thursday westpride.org to learn more.

Wanna swim? There are plenty of waterbased options, some with clothing optional.

SAN BERNARDINO,

The main event will be held in San Bernardino, CA, at the National Orange Show Fairground. The National Orange Show Fairground spans 120 acres with indoor and outdoor special event facilities and is only 40 minutes away from downtown Los Angeles. The main event will be 14 hours, and will prove why this event is being called “America’s first gay massive.” The term “massive” was originally used when talking about massive UK raves. Instead of being a typical circuit party, 1Life is the first large-scale dance event being produced in the style of a “massive,” bringing a new spin to the west coast. To wrap everything up, the closing party will be at the Belasco Theater located in downtown Los Angeles. This theatre is a relic of the early 1900’s and has been renovated with state of the art lighting and the largest D&B audiotechnik Sound System in the region. The theatre also retains most of its original architecture and design, making for a regal end to the weekend.

his Independence Day weekend, the 1Life Festival gives you an explosively gay way to spend your Fourth of July. With events between Los Angeles and San Bernardino, the 1Life Festival is the first large-scale LGBT electronic dance music festival in American history. The festival will be held at the National Orange Show Fairground, where you and friends can gather around three main stages to enjoy over 30 DJs, carnival rides and art installations. The festival is split into three events: the kick off party on July 4, the 14 hour main event on July 5 and the closing party on July 6. The kick off party starts your weekend at 333 Live, a two story megaclub in Los Angeles with smoke machines, confetti cannons, lasers, dancings cages and anything else that you could want to start off the festivities with.

Be prepared for the Main Event – it’s a 14hour dance event that will feature many of the weekend’s 30+ DJs.

16 // 05.14.2014

The list of DJs itself is enormous, with some of them making their first ever appearance at an LGBT-focused event. The overall sound ranges from electronic dance, to tribal house, vocal house, progressive and even trance. With three different sound stages, there will be plenty of music for everyone to choose from. Some of the DJs and producers include: Robbie Rivera, Chus+Ceballos, Antoine Clamaran, Tony Moran, DJ Paulo, Hector Fonseca, Alex Acosta, Alyson Calagna, DJ Alexander, Manny Lehman and DJ Phil B, with more to be announced. There is also an event called “1Life - 1Love,” where a lucky couple will be picked for a wedding package. The wedding package includes a ceremony within the festival, two threeday passes for the couple, round trip airfare, a deluxe hotel room for the weekend, eight guest tickets for friends and family and a private limousine. You will be able to vote for your favorite committed couple on the festival’s website until May 17, then the top eight couples will be open to receive votes until May 28. Tickets can be bought at 1lifefest.com, and are currently $129 for a full three day pass and $89 for a single day pass. As the event comes closer, ticket prices are subject to increase. WorldPride

Makes Its North American Debut in Toronto BY DYL AN S. GOLDMAN

P

ride, whether in yourself or in someone else, is a unifying concept across the globe, coming from within and touching every person differently. It’s a feeling that grows stronger in the face of hate, and a concept members of the LGBT community don’t just witness year after year – we live it. Over time, pride has lifted up and unified our community, opening closet doors and closed minds from the days of the Riots at Stonewall to now. Until the turn of the millennium, Pride festivals were mostly local, differing from city to city, state to state and even country to country. But that all changed with the birth of WorldPride in 2000, a larger-scale festival uniting local LGBT communities on a global scale. The 10-day celebration was first hosted by Rome in 2000, followed by Jerusalem in 2006 and then London in 2012. Now in 2014, the fourth WorldPride will make its North American debut this summer in Toronto, Canada from June 20–29. WorldPride 2014 Toronto (WP14TO) will be presented by the city’s official Pride planning committee PrideToronto, with the community-chosen theme “Rise Up!” Billed as ‘a ten-day international celebration incorporating activism, education and the history and culture of global LGBTTIQQ2SA* communities,’ the festival highlights Canada’s success and continued work in Human Rights. PrideToronto couldn’t possibly be more prepared for an event of this size. “In terms of the infrastructure, in terms of our public transportation system and in terms of our ability to take care of people, Toronto is one of the best cities in the world,” said Trevor Hampden, Communications Manager for PrideToronto. Plans were underway for WorldPride immediately after winning the hosting bid over Stockholm, Sweden 18 // 05.14.2014

during the 2009 InterPride conference in St. Petersburg. Five years later, with June 20 quickly approaching, Toronto is abuzz with the excited anticipation of representing the entire North American continental LGBTTIQQ2SA community. The main festival grounds will encompass 25 city blocks and include 10 free-to-attend open air stages. Various venues across the downtown core will also participate, hosting major partner and affiliate events during Pride. The main event will be broken down into several sub-events, some of which will run for the duration of WP14TO, and some for only a portion. At the WorldPride 2014 Arts and Culture Festival, June 20–29, you’ll find programming for all ages in art, film, theatre, dance, burlesque, drag, comedy music, family and youth programming and more. On June 24, there will be an AIDS Vigil in Cawthra Square Park. June 25 is the WorldPride Gala and Awards ceremony,

CLEVELAND, O HIO

Gay Games 9 Builds on the Past BY DAN WOOG

T

he past year marked a watershed for LGBT sports. Athletes at every level – professional, college, high school and amateur – at first ventured, then flooded out of the closet. Media attention no longer treats gay athletes as exotic creatures, all but unheard of in the real world; stories now focus on more nuanced aspects of their lives. Homophobes are increasingly marginalized, banished from the sidelines to the back row of the bleachers. In some ways (though we’re still waiting for that first hugename pro male team-sport athlete to come out), LGBT athletics has reached the point we’ve long waited for: normalcy. So does that mean there’s no longer any need for the Gay Games? Thousands of athletes, a hefty lineup of corporate sponsors, and hundreds of paid and volunteer organizers beg to differ. Gay Games 9 – the next edition of the event first held 32 years ago in San Francisco – is set for Aug. 9-16 in Cleveland and Akron, Ohio. Patterned on the Olympic Games (but denied use of the “O” word by a legal challenge), the Gay Games are now an international spectacle. Unlike the Olympics, anyone can participate. The Gay Games are open to all athletes 18 or older, “regardless of sexual orientation, race, gender, religion, nationality, ethnic origin, political beliefs, athletic or artistic ability, age, physical challenge or health status.” Realistically, of course, an event called “The Gay Games” draws competitors mostly from the LGBT community. Typically, about 10 percent are non-LGBT (most often, friends and family who participate to show support). And, says Gay Games 9 marketing manager Matt Cordish, despite the increasing visibility, acceptance, even celebration of

22 // 05.14.2014

LGBT athletes in mainstream athletics, there remains a need for an event that is way gay. “There are still people around the world who are ridiculed or hated for who they are,” says Cordish. “In the Gay Games, there is no judgment. This is an eye-opening opportunity for people who don’t have that acceptance or lack of judgment in the rest of their lives. We’re getting near the point when gay sports is a non-story. But there are still parts of the world where you can be punished, or even executed, for being gay.” Cordish – who played soccer, lacrosse and baseball as a youth, and whose main sport is now ice hockey – spends a great deal of time on the road. Part of his job involves spreading the word about the Gay Games, urging individuals and teams to register. He hears stories every day about the power of athletics to change LGBT lives. “One man told me how hard his life was growing up,” Cordish says. “He’s HIV-positive. But he got involved with sports, and he’s doing well. This is his reason to keep going.”

From cycling and racing to soccer and softball, a broad array of sports are represented at this year’s Gay Games event.

As in previous Gay Games, some participants this year are not out at all at home. Traveling to Cleveland, and taking part in Organizers expect 20,000 additional guests, performers, this event, marks an enormous step for them. spectators and volunteers. Cordish acknowledges the strides made in recent years. Gay Games 9 will draw upon the visibility of newly out athletes, empowering those who are not yet out, while providing one more opportunity to show the general public that LGBT people are indeed everywhere. And, Cordish adds, “We do need an event that showcases the ideal that Gay Games founder Tom Waddell worked so hard to create: an environment free of judgment, where all athletes can perform their best.” Those performances will take place in a broad array of sports: softball, track and field, soccer, swimming, rodeo, bowling, volleyball, rowing, even darts. Up to 9,000 participants are expected from around the world. Those numbers are on par with the number of athletes in the Summer Olympics. Like the Olympics, there are openinwwg and closing ceremonies, a “Festival Village,” and plenty of parties. Plus, of course, corporate sponsors: Wells Fargo, United Airlines, KeyBank and more.

Regular Gay Games-goers may find a different environment than they’re used to. Cleveland and Akron are not exactly San Francisco – where the first two Games were held – nor are they Vancouver, New York City, Amsterdam, Sydney, Chicago or Cologne, the hosts of following events. “There’s a thriving gay community in northeast Ohio,” Cordish says. “There’s no one defined area, like West Hollywood, the Castro or Boys Town. But we can go anywhere, and be ourselves.” And the region has something few other Gay Games venues can boast: a PGA Tour stop. That’s Firestone Country Club, site of the golf competition. Fore!

Registrations are still being accepted for Gay Games 9. Go to gg2014.sportingpulse.com; enter “GoAllOut” where prompted, for $30 off the general registration price. Be sure Unlike the Olympics, there are also “cultural” competitions, to register before May 31, when prices will increase by $30. in band and chorus. Spectator packages are available too.

After a day (or a week) of watching or participating in games, Gay Games guests have the chance to explore Cleveland and Akron’s nightlife.

En Pointe with Atlanta Ballet’s

T

he Atlanta Ballet closes out their regular season this weekend with MAYhem, a collection of three different examples of boundary-defying contemporary dance that includes the world premieres of “THREE” by Atlanta Ballet Artistic Director John McFall and “The Exiled” by Atlanta Ballet Choreographer in Residence Helen Pickett, along with the return of “1st Flash” by Jorma Elo.

By Elijah Sarkesian

to get to see world-class choreographers from all around the world creating on the Atlanta Ballet stage. And you’re going to see with the Atlanta Ballet, we’re all unique in our own ways. It’s like we’re each our own color, and it’s all such great colors. Everyone has something very special to offer, whether it be technical strength, musicality, artistry – everyone has something very unique and special to offer here. And we’re not a hierarchy company. We’re a troupe. We really feel like a team. In some companies, they have ranks, so if you’re in the Court of Ballet, that’s your group. If you’re a principal, you’re around principals all day. Here, we’re around each other all day, and we’re so supportive of each other that it comes across on stage. I can’t think of one person who’s come to Atlanta Ballet and hasn’t enjoyed it. It’s a breath of fresh air. They don’t want to leave; they fall in love with us.

Among the dancers performing in MAYhem is 25 year old Brandon Nguyen, who is completing his third year with the Atlanta Ballet. The openly gay Texas native joined the Atlanta Ballet after stints with the Orlando Ballet and Cirque du Soleil. In addition to his work with the Atlanta Ballet, Brandon is also involved with the Atlanta Ballet’s summer troupe, Wabi Sabi. Before the premiere of MAYhem, we spoke with Brandon about what makes both the Atlanta Ballet and Wabi Sabi unique DA: How did you get involved with Wabi Sabi? What organizations. makes it different from your work with the Ballet? David Atlanta: For a lot of people who maybe aren’t overly familiar with the Atlanta Ballet, they may have certain preconceptions about what it entails – very formal work, tutus, that sort of thing. What would you say to them to explain the Atlanta Ballet? Brandon Nguyen: When you come to the Atlanta Ballet, you’re not just going to see girls in tutus standing in a perfect line, not moving but looking beautiful standing there. You’re going to see a lot of movement. You’re going to get a lot of diversity with the classical ballet and the contemporary. Companies don’t do that, because it’s so different. It’s almost dangerous. DA: Do most companies tend to just go one way or the other? BN: Yeah, it’s usually very smooth. Like this repertoire that we’re doing, the differences aren’t so extreme. But when you’re doing something so classical, you can see the difference in the sides. You’re going to get a taste of a lot of things. You’re going 24 // 05.14.2014

BN: I’ve been involved with them the last two years, and it’s nice. In three years, it’s evolved. Wabi Sabi is a great way to get a chance to work with up-and-coming choreographers around the United States. They send their information in, and John Welker, who is the director of Wabi Sabi, goes through it all. It’s a good way to get to work with fresh talent, and it’s nice to still be moving around in the summer when we’re off. It’s lightweight, because you’re not working six or nine hours a day like you normally would. It’s lighter. You go into it with a fresh mindset, because it’s fun and new. It’s a nice process.

Sarah Shines On By Chris Azzopardi Musician on Making Out with Women and the Public’s Curiosity About Her Sexuality

I

f you’re still wondering whether the soundtrack to all your heartache, Sarah McLachlan, swings both ways because she plays the guitar and she’s earthy, wonder no more. She’s been there, done that…but not in a long time.

While promoting her first album in four years, Shine On, the singer herself broke the silence in our recent interview, revealing that though she’s “pretty straight,” she’s loved up on the ladies. David Atlanta: At what point in your career did you know you had a big gay following? Sarah McLachlan: Mmm…probably Boston 1991. (Laughs) DA: That’s very specific. SML: I’m serious. Maybe 1992. It was with my second record (Solace) and I remember going to do a gig in Boston. I hung out with a lot of women after the show and, uhh, there was one bartender in particular who was really hot! And I’m not gonna say anything else, but yeah. (Laughs) DA: Wait, no, no. You can’t just leave me hanging like that. SML: (Laughs) She was a good kisser – that’s all I’m gonna say! That was my first sort of foray. It didn’t go past that, but that was, mmm, yeah. I just remember there being a lot of women holding hands in the audience – and not only that, but it was a really intelligent audience. I don’t even know how I could tell that, but I just remember this feeling of, wow, this is just a great, great audience. I wish I could say why, but anyway, that was sort of the beginning of it and I think it just progressed from there. DA: So girls aren’t just good kissers but also super attentive?

photos: Kharen Hill 28 // 05.14.2014

SML: (Laughs) I can generalize with my fans in that way, and all my fans – gay, straight – are coming for the music. They’re coming for church. I say that because that’s how I feel, especially about playing live; for me, that’s sort of my church. I get

SML: Oh, I know you are! I figured I’m speaking to the converted here. (Laughs) But it’s the same for any group that is ostracized or demonized for something that simply shouldn’t even be an issue. It’s the same with race and racism. It’s absolute bullshit. I got involved with Lifebeat (the leading national nonprofit focused on educating America’s youth about HIV/AIDS prevention) really early on in New York. There was all this stigma around AIDS, and it’s horrific. People are dying, they’re suffering – and it’s got nothing to do with anything except we need to help, the world needs to help. DA: As the modern face of feminism and someone who made a bold statement with Lilith Fair, what are your observations on the inclusion and representation of women in music today? SML: There’s a pretty good cross-section going on, but it’s very dangerous for young women to become complacent and think that there is no glass ceiling. Feminism has almost become a dirty word in the past 10 years, like, we don’t need that anymore; our mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers did all that work and it’s done. It’s like, no, honey, there’s still growth in equality in this country, much less the rest of the world, which is even more frightening. At any moment, if we’re not on the ball, our sexual freedom can be taken away from us. You know, our freedom to choose. In a lot of states, that’s in flux. So you cannot be complacent. We have to have vigilance and keep an eye on things. Equality is still a fight that needs to be fought. DA: When you look out at the females making music to be a part of something bigger than myself and be really con- nowadays, what do you see? nected to other human beings on a real emotional and visceral SML: I see someone like Lorde who shows pictures of herself level. It’s very powerful. Photoshopped and un-Photoshopped and says, I have pimples, this is who I am, don’t take that away from me; don’t try to make DA: It’s a mutual feeling. me something that I’m not. She’s a great example of how a young woman should talk about herself, but you know, she’s a Kiwi. SML: It’s a mutual lovin’! DA: You mention your girl-on-girl foray in 1991, and for the longest time people have made assumptions about your sexuality. What do you think of the public’s interest in whether you’re bisexual?

I think Adele is a fantastic representation of beautiful, powerful strong music being made by women. She’s not a stick; she doesn’t try to be. She is bold and proud and beautiful and has pretty much the best voice out there. I bow down to her.

SML: People are always interested in how people bend. I’ve never shied away from it. I mean, I’m pretty straight. Let me just put it this way: I’ve never had sex with a woman. I haven’t. I’ve made out with more than one woman, but it just sort of happened. And there may have been alcohol involved during one of them. (Laughs)

Then there are a lot of young girls who are being overtly sexual as women have been since the beginning of time, because it is a powerful tool. It’s a powerful tool that men pretty much control, though. I don’t think much has changed in that department. Women think they have total control, and they’re doing it because that’s what men have told them for centuries to do. I think it’s really naïve to think that it’s any different than that.

DA: But not all of them? SML: No, no. But yeah, I’m pretty much straight. But at the same time I am such a strong advocate for gay and lesbian rights because I truly believe that we are all equal. We should be able to choose whom we love and how we love, and it’s not anybody’s goddamn business, really. DA: Of course. I’m absolutely with you. 30 // 05.14.2014

Party in the Park: Indie Bands to Rock Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park

B

By Dylan S. Goldman

ack for another year, Party in the Park is set to rock Centennial Olympic Park this Saturday, May 17 from 3–11 p.m., with a full day of music from five Indie Rock bands – Girl Talk, MGMT, The Joy Formidable, Minus the Bear and Stokeswood. There will also be an artist’s market, a diverse selection of food and of course, plenty of cold beer and cocktails.

Welsh alternative rock band The Joy Formidable formed in 2007 in North Wales, but members Rhiannon “Ritzy” Bryan, Rhydian Dafydd, and Matthew James Thomas now call London home. After great success abroad, the band’s current tour promoting their fourth album “Wolf’s Law”, brings them to the United States. Party in the Park is actually the tour’s final stop, which means the audience can expect an amazing set.

One of the best things about living in Atlanta is the music scene. The hub of the Southeast, Atlanta is a melting pot for all musical genres. For those who haven’t come out of their disco-blasting musical closet, Indie Rock is simply the lazy man’s way of saying “everything else”. Influenced by the alternative side of music, including everything from Electronic to Dub to Psychedelic Rock, Indie music’s roots are just as diverse as the people who love it.

Clearly, Minus the Bear is always on the move. After recently making a stop in Athens on their month-long tour in March, Minus the Bear is back on tour and back in Georgia. Their present tour is commemorative, celebrating the 10 year anniversary of their third hit, “They Make Beer Commercials Like This.” With five studio albums, four LPs and even a Remix LP, the seven-member Indie Rock band formed in 2001, and hails from Seattle.

Girl Talk is brought to you by sample fanatic Gregg Gillis, who is more than only Girl Talk’s frontman; he is their only man. Or woman, or person for that matter. The “one-man-band” isn’t exactly a “band” by definition but Gillis cannot be called a “DJ,” either. Girl Talk is more an indefinitely lasting, explorational musical sampling project, the results of which has led to studio albums and multiple shows around the country. With so many components and pieces of equipment, live mixing and sampling is an art form well-deserving of the respect it has received from the musical community. Girl Talk recently released his fifth album, All Day.

The only thing predictable about locally based Stokeswood is their high-energy and unpredictability during live shows. They bring to the stage a unique blend of powerful vocals, dance beats and pumping synths with a fierce electronic edge, for which they coined the term “Low-Endie.”

In between sets, you can check out the newly expanded Artists’ Market featuring local and handmade goods, unique crafts concert/music art and band merchandise- so don’t forget your wallet. Or your appetite. Since Atlanta is quickly rising to the top of the list for foodies, you’ll find a wide selection on local fare from in-town vendors in addition to the greasy Like Girl Talk, MGMT isn’t technically a “band”, either. RSVP for a Gay Ol’ Time

I

magine it: a vacation where a simple gesture like kissing your boyfriend on the cheek or holding your girlfriend’s hand isn’t seen as some sort of “big event” by people around you. If you’re looking for a cruise on a ship filled with gays and lesbians, RSVP may just be the cruise for you!

By Elijah Sarkesian

with custom-designed events. Over the years, entertainers have included Harvey Fierstein, Kate Clinton, Betty Buckley, Lainie Kazan, Judy Gold and Joan Rivers. Cruises also include special guest speakers and commitment ceremonies.

With nearly three decades of experience, RSVP clearly knows how to make a cruise into a big, fun event. RSVP claims that Since its first cruise sailed out of New Orleans in 1985, RSVP many of their guests make returns over the years. If you has made providing a safe, tailor-made vacation environment haven’t traveled with them before, you owe it to yourself to for gay men and lesbians its primary focus. Over the years, take a trip with them. RSVP has offered cruises and land vacations in the Americas, Asia, Africa and Europe.

So you’re hearing “gay and lesbian,” but how much of the ship is actually made up of those communities? According to RSVP, over 99% of their guests identify as gay or lesbian, but the cruise is open to friends and family as well. While a majority of RSVP’s passengers are gay men, lesbians do make up a solid part of the cruise’s passengers – and that part is growing. Roughly half of the men attending an RSVP cruise tend to be single, and the other half are couples. Among women, lesbian guests are almost exclusively couples. And in case you’re wondering about the age of RSVP attendees, the average age is 35 – younger than your typical cruise passenger. When you travel with RSVP, they take over the entire ship. Every passenger on board, who come from all walks of life and from all over the world, is part of the cruise’s experience. So whether you’re a young single gay man who likes to party or part of an older lesbian couple looking to relax, RSVP promises to have something for you. Because RSVP has been planning cruises for so long, they work to ensure that each cruise is as perfect as possible. That includes supplementing the ship’s staff with their own crew or changing an itinerary. That also means customizing the ship’s activities to suit passengers’ tastes. Depending on the cruise, that can include costume and toga parties, dating and newlywed games, tea dances, theme parties and pool games. On larger charters, they even replace “traditional” entertainment 34 // 05.14.2014

fairyscopes ARIES (March 20 – April 19):

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22):

Your virility could be put to the test today. A big daddy with a dominant personality could swagger into your life, and you’ll suddenly feel like a little boy. But be a man and rise to the occasion today. Little boys can grow up real fast.

Look at the big picture today as details won’t matter. Analyzing things will make them more complex than they need to be. Sometimes you just have to take things at face value, and that includes guys. Let your gut tell you if seeing is believing.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20):

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21):

Be tolerant of strange and unusual people today. They seem to be everywhere these days, like the inmates are running the asylum. Learn to laugh with them, because they always seem so happy and content. But then again, that may be the Prozac at work.

Money may not be coming in as smoothly as you’d like, so you may have to start cutting some corners. This could have a drastic effect on your social life. But look on the bright side: Going out only once a week could put the sheen back on what has become a tedious exercise.

GEMINI (May 21- June 20):

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20):

No wonder our flag is a rainbow, because there’s so many colors in our world. A more diverse group of people you could not meet, so celebrate that today. It’s our diversity that makes us strong, and it’s our differences that make us united.

This could be a lucky day for you as good fortune smiles. So don’t be afraid to take some romantic risks. Call a few guys you haven’t spoken to in a while and reconnect. You may find that some of them will be happy to hear from you again, while others still haven’t dropped the restraining orders.

CANCER (June 21- July 22):

CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):

Show some restraint when throwing money around today. Sure, you’ll be able to afford it, but are you being blinded by a fat price tag and a lot of bells and whistles? Bigger and better often translates to trashy and cheesy when money is in the wrong hands.

Tired of running the show, you may have to teach others how to take control today. Sometimes people close to you need to learn how to think for themselves, and not depend on someone else. What happens if that other person is no longer there? It’s called tough love and they’ll be better for it.

LEO (July 23 – August 22):

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):

You shine like the sun, but you rarely share your warmth with just one person. You may be a man of the people but even you needs a one and only. So today spread your light on a special fella. Everyone else will just have to get used to being in the dark.

A warm and giving environment often promotes creative collaboration. And not just in the workplace. Show your partner some TLC and things could get quite creative. Sometimes long term partners forget how easy that can be.

VIRGO (August 23 – September 22):

PISCES (February 19 – March 19):

You may have to bear your fangs to overbearing people today. With their drama and histrionics they’ll make your day a nightmare if you don’t. Flash your claws as well, but do what you have to do to get them off your back and running for the band-aids.

You may have too much going on today, so take some ‘me’ time to just sit and visualize. Entertaining your fantasies can be a nice break in the day but you may have to finish some of them after you get home from your boyfriend’s place and you’re on your own computer.

Bitch SESSION SEND US YOUR BITCHES! Text 404.969.BTCH or email bitch@davidatlanta.com

If our society didn’t treat heteronormative, monogamous relationships as an achievement, we’d spend way less time giving dirtbags attention. Him: Me: Him:

You’re the hottest guy I’ve ever seen. Your just saying that to have sex with me. And you’re smart too, I like that.

So sorry that me giving my fiancé a smooch on the lips, a big ol’ hug, or a pat on the booty makes you want to bitch. But hey, if that makes it look like we’re still in high school, I hope I don’t ever graduate!

Oh, Baton Bob. I know where you can shove that baton.

68 // 05.14.2014

My moral compass just spins.

I want to be the reason you look down at your phone and smile. Then walk into a pole.

I naturally have an aversion to spicy food. I guess that makes me a natural bottom.

Am I missing something? You’re fat, weird-looking, drunk, drug addicted, and have an STI, and you were settling for me? I think you need to put the pipe down and back away slowly.

“I do what I want.” Such a succinct way to say, “I’m a shortsighted man-child.”

My Mexican burrito is much tastier than your dried-up, shriveled corn dog.

Friends are supposed to make you feel good about yourself. Just remember that. *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)
