D
on’t be fooled by the boyish dimples that appear when this baby-faced bartender smiles – Chad McDaniel is a weathered pro with over 20 years behind a bar, and has called Oscar’s home for the last four. A true queen at heart, Chad boasts that he can make pretty much anything when armed with a glue stick. But when he is armed with a bottle, ask him for a shot of his “drag juice.” What has been your craziest experience as a bartender? I would have to say it was when a woman came in with a group of her friends and ordered a virgin dirty martini. So I gave her chilled olive juice…and she loved it! What is the worst thing a customer can do? I get very annoyed when people order their cocktail mixer-first. It is a Vodka Cranberry you want, not a Cranberry Vodka. Also, sucking air through your straw to indicate that you would like another beverage…? That is just poor manners. What sets Oscar’s apart from other Atlanta bars? What sets us apart from other bars would have to be the witty charisma of the bartenders, the ability we have to create our own special cocktails and our unique mix of customers. We also have Showtune Tuesday night; that attracts a great crowd and great energy. When you come see me on Wednesday night, you go back to a time that some of us remember far to well… the 80s. Whether you lived it or not, 80s night is always an experience. We also have a great daytime crowd!

O
ver the last few years, you may have noticed more and more film productions located around the city. It’s not just you. As of 2010, the film industry in Georgia is the fourth largest in the United States; only California, New York and Texas have larger industries. Thanks to tax incentives introduced in 2002 and strengthened in 2008, Georgia has become a favorite location for productions large and small.
The result of these incentives? In 2005, Georgia spent $10.3 million on its film initiative. Five years later, that amount increased to $140.6 million. In other words, they’re major contributors to Atlanta’s burgeoning film industry. Today, Atlanta alone includes studios for Tyler Perry’s productions and Screen Gems. It’s also served as a primary filming location for films of all genres, from The Internship and family films like Million Dollar Arm to action flicks like Fast & Furious 6.
Atlanta’s importance as a media center didn’t just start in the last few years, of course. Turner Broadcasting comes out of this city, including cable networks CNN, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, TNT and TBS (remember when TBS was a local channel?). A series of tax incentives, though, have made the state as a whole more appealing to major studios in recent years. The first, a point of purchase sales and use tax exemption, came in 2002. A few years later, in 2005, the Georgia Entertainment Industry Investment Act was signed into law. It was later strengthened in 2008. The act granted certain productions a transferable income tax credit of 20% of all in-state costs for film and television investments of $500,000 or more, with an extra 10% tax credit given to approved projects bearing the Georgia Entertainment promotional logo in the titles or credits of production.
Additionally, a number of television programs outside of Turner are now filming in the area. Series like The Vampire Diaries, Drop Dead Diva and Teen Wolf have all called the Atlanta area home for some or all of their respective runs. If you’ve seen a clip of the Steve Harvey-hosted version of Family Feud online, that was filmed in Atlanta as well. And then there are the reality shows – Bravo alone has created a number of shows in the area, including The Real Housewives of Atlanta (obviously) and Married to Medicine.

This week, we’re giving you a glimpse inside Atlanta’s film industry, from members of our community who are involved on a regular basis with some of these productions. We’re also giving you some tips on how to get involved yourself. Who knows – maybe you’ll see your face on a theater screen in the near future!

ou may remember Tony Gowell from David Atlanta’s recent Men of David contest – we certainly do. His outgoing personality and drive to help represent different parts of Atlanta’s LGBT community helped push him to the runner-up position in the Men of David contest. While his primary job is at Dragon Con, where he serves as the Convention Office Director year-round, Tony has also been an active part of Atlanta’s film industry. While he’s been involved as an extra on several productions, and has also worked as a background casting director, he’s mostly associated with his time on the breakout series The Walking Dead. We spoke with Tony recently about his work on the series, including the way the series turned into a family affair, his spots at fan conventions, and exactly what’s involved with turning into a zombie. Creating a
New World
C
reating a film or television episode takes more than a cast and a camera. All sorts of positions have to be filled to create a particular world. For Atlantan Shane Garner, his job is to provide set dressing for various productions filmed in the area like The Vampire Diaries and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, including pulling from a warehouse of unusual props that he rents to productions. David Atlanta: What is your involvement in Atlanta’s film and television industry? Shane Garner: I am a member of the local 479 and have done set dressing for several films, television shows, and music videos. I also have a warehouse of unusual props that are rented to the movie and theatrical community. As of late, I have been making custom props for The Originals, Constantine, and Goosebumps. The props include a series of creepy dolls and voodoo dolls. Apparently, I am becoming known around town for esoteric type props. If a production needs an Egyptian sarcophagus, an unusual throne chair, or just plain weird, my name is usually mentioned. DA: What does your job entail?
By Elijah Sarkesian
DA: How did you get your start, professionally? SG: I had worked in antique store in Atlanta and we rented quite a bit for productions. I do photography and started garnering unusual items for photo shoots. When Rob Zombie was in town filming Halloween II, one of the buyers heard that I had some unusual pieces and came to my home and rented things from my basement, my living room, and even from my bedroom. As my collection grew, I teamed up with Ted Morrow at All About Props and now my things occupy about 7000 sq. ft. of space. Having the warehouse space keeps the level of creepiness down in the house, but my roommates may say otherwise.
DA: For someone who wants to get involved in the film industry, and more specifically into what SG: Since I mainly freelance, every day is different. One day you’ve done, what would you recommend? I may be turning a stationary store into a wedding cake shop and another day, I could be helping transform a city park into SG: What do I recommend? Be true to your heart and your a cemetery. Six Easy Tips to
Being an Extra
I
t’s unbelievable how much is really filmed in the Atlanta area. Recent films like Million Dollar Arm and Ride Along are filmed locally, as are shows like The Vampire Diaries. You can almost guarantee that, on any given day here in Atlanta, you will into a movie star at a restaurant or the local gym. One of the best parts about having access to this industry is getting a chance to be a movie extra and get the “extra experience.” But what can you do to become an extra – and be used multiple times? Take it from someone who’s done it a few times, and don’t fret. It’s a lot easier than you think. Here’s a checklist of things to have, and to have prepared, for a day on set. Bring multiple outfit choices. They’ll usually give you a vague idea of what to wear in each scene, whether it’s “club wear” or “business professional.” The times that I’ve gotten the most camera time have been when my outfit was more interesting to look at. Don’t go crazy, though! Whips and chains are a no-no. Bring something to read and be prepared to sit. When you’re an extra, you’ll sit. A lot. You’ll sit at tables with people you don’t know and you’ll have to awkwardly socialize for 8+ hours. If you’re not into awkward conversation about where you’re from and how they think they know someone from that area, it’ll just be better to bring a book and your iPod. Bring snacks. Most movie sets will provide you with snacks, but they’re boring and generic. Pink lemonade and goldfish? It’s okay for the first day, but it’s better to bring your own snacks. Plus you don’t have to risk eating something other dirty hands have been in. Listen and be ready! The crew work for hours getting the set exactly right, only to have to herd 100 loud extras on set. It gets a bit much and tensions end up running high. It’s better to just stay quiet, listen for instructions, and make the day go by faster. All that talking at 5 p.m. is the reason you’re still on-set at 2:30 a.m.

Always volunteer for more. If, at the end of the day, they end up needing a few more people to stay, stay. It looks good on your part, you may get one-on-one time with the director, or an actor, or nobody at all. But with the film industry being so small, people will remember your face and remember that you helped out. And finally: DON’T be a diva. Honey, you are not on the show, you are not a featured actor, and your name isn’t even going to be credited! So don’t strut around thinking you’re a big time acting diva. You’re not. Stay humble, stay nice, pay attention, and just don’t be an asshole. Nobody likes those guys. Interested in becoming an extra? Keep an eye on the following casting companies on Facebook for local opportunities: Cherrix Casting ATL, CL Casting, Tammy Smith Casting, Extras Casting Atlanta and Hylton Casting.

Political and Social Inclusivity and Equality
Funding Community Events and Charities
LGBT studies have opened doors (and minds) in leading corporations and organizations, which in turn have recognized the value of their LGBT employees through the establishment of equal hiring policies and domestic partner benefits. This has been a catalyst, leading to sweeping changes in political and social inclusivity.
Beyond simply advertising, though, these companies support us in many ways, including sponsoring community events and funding community-based charities in order to earn our loyalty.
Keep LGBT Publications and Websites in Business Demographic reports also influence marketing investment. Virtually absent until recently, we now see a growing variety of products and services represented in LGBT media, celebrating our diversity. Ads keep LGBT publications and websites in business, serving their communities with independent news and information.
Taking an annual pulse on market trends through surveys helps demonstrate the LGBT community’s growing power, and influences positive change. Everyone who completes the survey by June 30, 2014 may enter into a drawing to win one of five US $100 cash prizes, or designate a non-profit charity to receive the prize. Ru San’s Midtown: Reconstructed and Reopened photos: Russ Youngblood
T
he first hard blow to the Midtown sushi scene came a few years back when Nikkimoto’s closed. Then Ru San’s Midtown closed its doors to make some much-needed renovations. The new owners were unhappy with everything from the outdated décor to the management. So for months, sushi lovers were forced to either settle for grocery store sushi or pay top dollar at Nakato’s tiny sushi bar. After a long wait, Ru San’s has regrouped and reopened, and is ready to reclaim the title of Midtown maki masters! The impressive remodel begins with an inviting and colorful new entrance that leads you into the new bar area. The bar seating is surrounded by clean white columns, accented by recessed mood lighting that seems to reflect the veritable rainbow of different sake cocktails that they offer, all are around or under $6. Known for premium sakes and Japanese beers, the Midtown location will soon feature a full bar with spirits and liquors from all around the world. Unwind after work with a couple cocktails, or meet friends for a few martinis before going out on the town. Where the bar ends, the large sushi bar begins and extends far into the heart of the restaurant. Beautifully elaborate blue tiling wraps around the base as if the sushi bar rose out of the glistening ocean itself. Despite the many changes, one can still find Junji running things from behind the sushi bar. A sushi master, Junji quietly creates breathtaking displays and calmly slices away as the dining room loudly roars with electronic beats and never ending sake bombs.

wonton skins. This eclectic dish flawlessly melds the best of Asian and Mexican cuisines into one delicious starter. It is no surprise the kitchen came up with this original dish as both Latin and Japanese chefs work together here. If you want a more traditional Japanese appetizer, order the “House Age-Dashi Tofu.” A large bowl of crispy tofu squares is topped with bonito flakes that seem to dance around to the music playing in the dining room. They are actually moved by the slightest draft in the air and from the steam rising off of the tofu. A large ramekin of sweet Kajekiru sauce flanks the side of the bowl, waiting to be poured onto the tofu just before eating. For your main course, consider more than just sushi. Most of the Japanese Noodles menu features items ranging from $6 to $9. Choose from various preparations of ramen, udon, and soba noodles served piping hot in authentic cast iron pots and garnished with soft poached eggs and tempura fried shrimp and vegetables. For an even heartier dish, the Pork Katsu Don is a large rice bowl topped with battered and fried pork tenderloin and then smothered in sweet onions. Two can easily share any of these authentic Japanese dishes and still need a doggy bag.
It is no secret that Ru San’s offers the widest array of sushi, sushi rolls and sashimi in Atlanta. With names like “Godzilla Maki” and “Gone with the Wind,” one can easily get lost in their maki menu (sushi rolls) with over 75 to choose from. What you may not know, however, is that Ru San’s Midtown also offers unique appetizers and authentic Japanese dinners that provide a lot of bang for your buck. Some might find their menu overwhelming, but Ru San’s is a bastion for Japanese classic cuisine in Midtown Atlanta with Start out your meal by sharing the “Hot Wok Tiger Shrimp.” great dishes both hot and cold to choose from. There is surely You and your friends can dig into this layered mound of pico something on the menu for every guest. Even those on a tight de gallo, fresh avocado and spicy shrimp with crispy fried budget can still enjoy a quality meal. 24 // 05.28.2014

Walk This Way:
The Walking Dead Escape Comes to Phillips Arena
S
kybound Entertainment, the multi-platform entertainment company started by company CEO and creator of The Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman, has added yet another component to their internationally successful media franchise. The Walking Dead Escape, brought to you by Skybound EXP, is a unique, interactive fan experience that will be coming to Atlanta’s Phillips Arena on May 31 at 6 p.m.
By Dylan S. Goldman
The cult-like, raging inferno of super-fans across multiple media platforms started with a tiny spark when writer Robert Kirkman released his new black-and-white comic book series, The Walking Dead, in 2004. The series chronicles the life of series hero Rick Grimes, his family and friends, and the other survivors he encounters during his travels after a devastating event leads to a worldwide zombie apocalypse.
The Walking Dead Escape puts participants right in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, with Phillips Arena acting as an evacuation center and decontamination zone for Atlanta, with an actual course that participants run, as either survivors or zombies. After a year of trials, The Walking Dead Escape has been fine-tuned this year, tour developers adding new and exciting elements and cut the aspects that just didn’t’ fit. This year, the comic celebrates its tenth anniversary. “When people read the comics and watch the shows, they project themselves into that world. That’s what is so cool about this event. Everyone gets to have The Walking Dead experience, but everyone’s experience is different and unknown,” said David Isaacs, President of Skybound EXP. Participants essentially become the cast of this cosplay event. Everyone’ experience will be different, first depending on whether they whose to partake as “walkers” or “survivors.” Those playing “walkers” are transformed into zombies both inside and out. Each walker is “zombiefied” by professional makeup artists – Skybound hires people locally from city to city – and undergoes a brief training on how to interact with survivors, including what to and not to do.
Starting with one little series, The Walking Dead snowballed into a multi-million dollar franchise that bridged the gaps between several platforms of entertainment media. “The comic book was out six years before the show, so I think the scene was set to reach a broader audience by the really strong base of passionate, loyal super-fans the comic had,” Isaacs said. The franchise now includes the hit television series, The Walking Dead, two novels, three video games, as well as a board game, pint glasses, action figures and more.
No matter the medium, all Walking Dead episodes, events and issues share a common thread. “The Walking Dead Escape creates a level of uncertainty,” Isaacs added. “We are careful to make sure it is part of anything we do… it’s always in “People project themselves into the environment. You don’t there.” know when the apocalypse is ending. You don’t know where you’re going to go. You don’t know if anyone else is alive There are three ways to participate in the event: as a and you have to survive that environment or you will die,” Spectator, Walker or Survivor/VIP. Getting Blunt with Whoopi Entertainer Shrugs Off Gay Rumors, Talks Being ‘Claimed’ by the LGBT Community
By Chris Azzopardi

ever one to give a flying you-know-what, Whoopi Goldberg has made a career out of not caring. Ask her about her sexuality – to some, a lingering enigma since the ’70s, when Goldberg made lots of lesbians laugh at San Francisco comedy clubs – and she doesn’t get all the fuss. Ask her what she thinks about pot – actually, don’t even bother. She just wrote a column about it. Whoopi loves a blunt.
It makes a lot of sense, then, that one of Goldberg’s earliest comedy heroes is veteran standup Jackie “Moms” Mabley, the 20th-century trailblazer – and later, a civil rights activist – known for a so-what attitude, her edgy humor and dressing like your grandma. The first female comedian to be featured at the Apollo, Mabley was also known to be a lesbian, a topic discussed in Whoopi Goldberg Presents Moms Mabley, a Goldberg-funded documentary featuring a roster of comedy big shots: Joan Rivers, Eddie Murphy, Bill Cosby and Kathy Griffin.
matically assume an ally was someone who just did not want to come out of the closet. WG: (Laughs) That’s what people thought! It was ridiculous. I was like, “Uh, no.” People just didn’t understand. You see bad situations or stupid situations, like folks having an issue with who you cared about, who you wanna be with, all that kind of stuff that has nothing to do with the realities of our world. The realities of the world I grew up in was: It was nobody’s business. If you’re not doing your job, then I’m gonna bitch. But I’m not gonna bitch at anybody ’cause they’re gay, or because they weigh a lot more than me. At the time, it just seemed so stupid to me that this was what people’s issues were.
In this recent interview with Whoopi, the comedian-actress talked about how being a lesbian had no effect on Moms becoming “the funniest woman in the world,” the longstanding DA: As an ally and as someone with a long history rumors of Goldberg’s own sexuality and her commitment to the in the movement, what’s your take on the role you fight for gay rights. played then and the evolving nature of being identified as an ally? WG: Well, sure, there’s all of that, but I’ve always had gay people in my life. I mean, I grew up in Chelsea, a neighborhood that has all kinds of folks, because nobody had any money. We were all poor. There were men you’d call “uncle” who never seemed to have girlfriends, and they were your “uncle.” Later on you learned what it meant. These guys didn’t want to be with these girls. They had their love from their brothers. They wanted their men. DA: And Moms, despite talking about young men in her act, had a thing for the ladies. WG: Yeah, she worked a great game. DA: She was all about living life on her own terms. Moms must remind you of yourself in that sense. WG: It’s crazy – she’s very much like me. Very much! Like her, I’m always trying to get the gig, and it can be a bit difficult because I’m not conventional. WG: (Laughs) Yeah! And it’s like, there are a lot worse things people could have accused me of – things that would really be upsetting! That’s not one of them. It never has been. I grew up in the theater. I grew up in a neighborhood where there was always gay folks. Always! So I never understood people’s freak out about it. Everybody is so damn paranoid about everything. They’re so concerned that (people) are gonna be like, “Oh, somebody’s gonna think I’m gay.” So what! What happens if they do?
There’s many things people can wonder about, but if you don’t know by now, it’s because you don’t wanna know. I say to people, “Well, what do you think I am?” They say, “We think you’re gay.” I say, “If that’s what you wanna think, OK!”
I have been gay in films. I’ve done two: The Color Purple and I always forget what the other one is. People assume they know because they’ve seen you in a movie or because they’ve seen you do something or they’ve heard you say something, and DA: Considering how long people have wondered then they make assumptions. Patrick Dennis:
Building Up Atlanta’s Art Community By Elijah Sarkesian
W
nature into every piece. To this day, the most frequent comments I get about my paintings is that they are “serene,” so I’d say those early influences were pretty strong. DA: What led you to create the Atlanta Foundation for Public Spaces? PD: After living in Washington, DC for awhile and enjoying the weekend outdoor markets there (especially Eastern Market on Capitol Hill), it was a difficult adjustment to make when moving to Atlanta where there is so much less publicly accessible art. My partner and co-founder Randall Fox took a trip to New York and came back full of ideas as to how we could change the face of Atlanta with art. We met with city leaders and developers to establish outdoor artist markets. These became so popular I quit my “real” job. We brought a group of artists together around the kitchen table and hammered out a plan for AFFPS to launch art festivals and events that are truly “by artists, for artists.” And here we are eight years later! DA: To you, why is it important to support local art? PD: I’ve always been a patron of the arts, but I have a unique perspective since I’m an artist myself. I understand the struggle for recognition, validation and financial reward for doing what one loves. I am also attracted to new, innovative art techniques and get excited to help nurture new, local artists who don’t know about resources available to them. I have found that we have an enormous talent pool of artists in the south. Film, literature and visual arts are well represented but underappreciated. If we can support emerging artists here, there is no limit to their success.
ith a commitment to fostering local talent, the Atlanta Foundation for Public Spaces has launched several weekendlong festivals that take place throughout the city. Up next for the organization is the Peachtree Hills Festival of the Arts, taking place May 31–June 1at Peachtree Hills Park. The weekend will include over 150 fine painters, photographers, sculptors, leather DA: What inspires you creatively? and metal craft persons, glass blowers, jewelers and more from around the community, plus local food and beverage PD: For my own paintings, it’s always the beach, or a vendors, live entertainment and art activities. coastline, or where salt water intersects fresh water. I love the reflections, the color, the enormity of a skyline AFFPS’s reach has grown considerably over the years, and and the luxury of a solitary experience being there. Even as a co-founder of the organization, artist Patrick Dennis has as my technique becomes more abstract over the years, I seen that growth first-hand. Along with Randall Fox, Dennis will always be inspired by water and solitude. I never, ever created the organization as a way to make art more publicly paint people into accessible to the Atlanta community after seeing similar my paintings and markets in Washington, DC. fairyscopes ARIES (March 20 – April 19):
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22):
You may be smitten with a new guy you met recently, and he’ll be all you think about today. You’re so love-struck you may find yourself making plans for your future together. You’d go as far as filling out a bridal registry at Crate and Barrel if only you could remember his name.
You’ll hope today that an intellectual connection leads to a physical one. But don’t get your hopes up, as this is an easy mistake to make. Creative collaborating can be stimulating, but just because someone shares their brain with you doesn’t mean they’re also willing to share their body.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20):
SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21):
Too much flamboyancy often keeps you from enjoying the gay social scene. Which is a pity since there are so many eligible guys out there who fill your stringent requirements. Just because they’re wearing a dress and make-up doesn’t make them any less manly. Then again, maybe it does.
Your peaceful home life may be shattered by an unsettling revelation today. This could lead to tantrums and outbursts that would embarrass Elton John himself. But you may have to live with the fact that your partner sold your Lady Gaga concert tickets on eBay, and is keeping the money for himself.
GEMINI (May 21- June 20):
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20):
You may meet someone today who forces you to reexamine some of your tightly held beliefs. It’s okay to entertain different viewpoints, but don’t lose all perspective. You’ll know you’ve gone too far when you find yourself at a Jonas Brothers concert, and you’re actually enjoying it.
A creative give-and-take at home can be enhanced if you keep yourself open to new ideas today. Staying close-minded will hinder progress and keep that redecorating project from being completed. Sometimes you like stirring the pot just for the dramatic effect, but today it won’t be either endearing or cute.
CANCER (June 21- July 22):
CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):
Relating intellectually to friends today will be like trying to explain Homer’s ‘Odyssey’ to a roomful of monkeys. Your efforts will result in glazed stares and dumbfounded looks. But, ever the trooper, you’ll push on -- even after they start throwing bananas at you.
You may be thinking of changing aspects of yourself in an effort to be more attractive to guys. But avoid a total reinvention. Make it a gradual process, and it’ll seem believable. Suddenly bounding into work with the look and personality of Perez Hilton will only make you look like an idiot.
LEO (July 23 – August 22):
AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):
You may meet someone today whose ego is bigger than yours, if that’s even possible. The resulting clash of the titans will be epic in proportion. There’s no telling who will win this battle, but you’re willing to concede defeat if he’s cute and makes more money than you.
Today you’ll shine with a brilliance that can only mean one thing: You’re in love! That’s all you’ll talk about and it won’t take long for people to get sick of hearing about it. Keep in mind today that your new love is only important to you, and others really couldn’t care less.
VIRGO (August 23 – September 22):
PISCES (February 19 – March 19):
Changes at home may disrupt your delicate balance. This will leave you disoriented and confused, but snap out of it! Life is change, baby, and you’ll feel better about it if you just roll with it.
Be open to change and today could be fun and productive. But fall back on well-trodden ways and the day will be predictable and dull. Bring this mindset to romance today, and you could meet someone different who will be anything but predictable and dull.

A little jealousy in a relationship is healthy. It’s nice knowing someone is afraid to lose you. I’m starting to lose count of the number of states where marriage equality is legal. Thank God.
It doesn’t matter how smart a guy is – he’ll still be led around by his dick.

I wonder if girls appreciate a guy’s ass as much as us gays do.
Wrestling seems fun. Who doesn’t like being pinned down?
It’s hard to stop people with so little to lose.
Is it possible to get carpal tunnel in my cock?
Why do we call it a blowjob when it’s so much more fun than work? I just found out cockfighting is done with roosters. I’m so disappointed.
