Progress Still Needed
O
ver the last week, one of the happiest moments I experienced was seeing that Laverne Cox made the cover of Time. With Orange is the New Black’s second season premiering soon, the show’s cast has been making the media rounds. But this is something entirely different. Cox was on the cover as a representative of the trans community, and parts of the stories she told in her interview were heartbreaking, to say the least. The heartbreak wasn’t what made me happy, I should clarify. The fact that she was able to not only tell her story, but landed the cover of a major publication to tell her story, was what made me happy. Of all the trans-themed stories that have come out over the last month, it was a welcome shift in narrative. In case you’ve been out of the loop, there’s been some choice commentary within the LGBT community over the last few months when it comes to certain words and phrases commonly associated with the trans community that many consider derogatory. Getting into the debate would require so much more space than I have available here, so I’m not looking to rehash it, though I acknowledge that I find myself on the side of not using such language, because I have no need to use the words and I understand that certain words have a larger impact than others. If there’s a positive that’s come out of the situation to date, though – and I do think it’s a positive in the long run – it’s that we’re finally starting to deal with some issues that have been in our broader community for years. I’m not saying it hasn’t gotten ugly, because it has. There have been heated reactions on both sides of the language issue. But these are things I’ve heard mentioned for years, and it’s surprised me that it’s taken this long for these issues to come to a head. With the attention it’s drawing, though, it’s also opening more doors for stories like Cox’s to be told. Or for outrage to come out at incidents like what happened to two trans women here in Atlanta on MARTA a few weeks ago. We may be making progress as a larger community, but for smaller parts like the trans community, there’s still so much work that needs to be done.

ecently, residents and bar-goers alike have heard whispers of several Yetti sightings in East Atlanta Village, all within a one-block radius of their local queer watering hole, Mary’s. Well, he ain’t a Squatch, nor is he Chewie, although he will answer to either nickname. He’s resident bartender Matt Livingston, and he’s rockin’ some serious height and beardage- but he’s way more personable than either fictional character. Kind of. With 20 years under his belt, if this adorable king of sarcasm knows one thing, it’s how to pour a killer drink that will satisfy anyone who walks into his bar. What’s the worst thing a customer can do? Flag you down in a busy bar and then when you go to them, they turn and ask their friend what they should drink…at which point their friend starts spouting suggestions, all of which repulse person one. This person inevitably, upon your return with the decided drink, will not have money or payment ready and possibly look at you with the most confused look. Then, they have to fumble thru all of their belongs to find payment. What is your favorite drink to make and what is in it? Do you have a signature drink? If so, what do you call and what is in it? My favorite drink is Bourbon Neat...it’s bourbon poured from the bottle into a glass, fancy. Over my career I’ve written many cocktail menus and couldn’t really say I have one “signature drink.” If I had to choose one at the moment it would be a drink I make quite often at Mary’s, the “Ho Sitdown!” It consists of fruit, more fruit and liquor – any kind, as long as the proportions are 2/1. It’s usually best with clear and/or flavored liquor. Credit to Bill…thanks Bill! 10 // 05.28.2014

What has been your craziest experience as a bartender? It’s been a long career with a lot of crazy times. I’ve worked all over, from biker bars to fine dining. Let’s see...I once had a prominent political figure in my bar – not Mary’s – for a large buy out. When it came time to close, he was presented his tab to which he responded “Do you know who I am!?! I don’t have a tab here or anywhere else in this town!” Long story short, he attempted to physically fight me over the tab, at which I was forced to remove him from my bar. Good times!

Stonewall Month Events Benefiting Atlanta Pride Committee and the 2014 Pride Festival

Pride Month, however, would not be what it is without acknowledging and paying reverence to a series of violent riots that began on June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn gay bar in New York City’s West Village. In those riots, LGBT patrons fought back against hordes of NYC police officers who launched a raid on the bar. The exact reason, or reasons, why they did fight back vary depending on who one might ask – some theories abound that gay men were bereft by the death of Judy Garland and her funeral that took place one day prior; numerous others declared that gays were simply sick and tired of being bullied and intimidated. Perhaps both reasons were true. Either way, the fierce defiance of those gay individuals who banded together as a unified force was the catalyst for the modern gay rights movement that continues today.

Vena at Vinings:
Welcome to the Cabaret photos: Michael J. Teal
“There’s a cabaret in Vinings?”
I asked myself upon reading about Café Vena for the first time. I would have to see it for myself. An Atlanta native, I’ve been to just about every drag show there is in this city. Years before my 21st birthday, I was sneaking into Backstreet every Sunday evening. Back then, Ms. Charlie Brown’s Cabaret was everything! Seeing her girls breathe life into all of my favorite songs was enthralling. She demanded attention as she strut her stuff through the crowd looking for an unsuspecting victim to berate into oblivion. It was my very own Kit Kat Klub, my Chez Lui. Of course, we all grow up as our tastes grow more discerning with age. Films like Chicago, Victor Victoria, Cabaret and Burlesque remind us of a time and place when music was so much more than just a DJ pushing buttons in a glass booth. Once, not long ago, all a star needed was a piano and a voice. I found such a voice, among many other pleasant surprises, in nearby Vinings.
By Jameson Parker
Hodges began his performance which included classics like “Fever” as well as new hits like “Let it Go” and “Skyfall.” Around the same time that the tender lamb “lollipops” arrived, so did Maryline Blackburn. Bruce positively lit up as she sauntered in and calmly ordered a glass of wine from the bar. A friend of Bruce’s and frequent performer at the Café, Blackburn must’ve known what would’ve come next. She eventually took the microphone and effortlessly stole the show with a stirring rendition of “At Last” that even Etta James would’ve found moving. Maryline’s sultry voice belies the fact that she is a former Miss Alaska 1984, leaving a young Sarah Palin behind as first runner-up. It was hard to believe this Diva just happened to be in the neighborhood, but I have a feeling that this sort of thing happens often here at Vena!
Just a few exits up 75N, and less than a fifteen minute drive, I found myself pleasantly traveling back in time. It had been over twenty years since I had gone grocery shopping with my mother here. The Kroger was still in business; however, the adjacent martial arts studio now had a picturesque little patio that suggested some sort of bistro. Above the awning the sign read Café Vena. Upon entering, owner Bruce Speer explained that it was now just Vena at Vinings. He proceeded to point out pictures on the wall, naming some regular performers that included a Frank Sinatra impersonator as well as several local Just as I washed down the last juicy bite of chicken marsala jazz legends. “You’re in for a treat,” I was assured as he led with a hefty gulp of wine, Hodges was bringing the evening to me to my table in a quiet corner of the dining room. an end with an eloquently slow version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Bruce had earlier explained to me the mean“Who is that dapper young man standing at the end of the bar, ing of these little red birds found throughout the restaurant. silently looking out the window?” I asked my server. As hard enough as it was possible room for dessert I was happily on my way, looking to keep my eyes on the menu, my server and I picked out a forward to my next trip out to Vinings and wondering what few promising items. And just as the roasted beets came out, other surprises Bruce could possibly have in store. 20 // 05.28.2014

Premiere Party Kicks Off Summer for CHRIS Kids
S
ince its inception, CHRIS Kids has focused on four integral concepts: diversity, inclusivity, acceptance and unconditional love. Since the organization started in 1981, CHRIS Kids has worked to protect and serve youth throughout the Metro Atlanta area in their homes, schools and foster care, and during stints in the juvenile justice system. Their work to heal children, strengthen families and build a community has made CHRIS Kids an important part of Atlanta’s community.

Of course, the ultimate purpose of the evening is to raise funds for a worthwhile organization. Those funds start with the cost of admission to Premiere Party. Tickets start at $40 when purchased in advance, or $50 at the door. VIP tickets for the event start at $125. Additionally, the event includes a silent auction, where guests can bid on a number of items. The proceeds of the silent auction, of course, go to benefit CHRIS Kids as well.
CHRIS Kids kicks off the summer this Saturday, June 7 with their annual Premiere Party, a cocktail party and silent auction that has raised over $900,000 since its inception in 2002. It’s a fun and fabulous event, with over 600 attendees expected to attend this year’s festivities. As it has in previous years, this year’s Premiere Party takes place at Mason Murer Fine Art. Guests of Premiere Party will enjoy food from Keith Hand and Bridge Catering, drinks from Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, and specialty cocktails from Smirnoff, all while listening to hot beats provided by DJ Vicki Powell. In addition, VIP guests of the event have access to an exclusive VIP lounge area and receive special swag bags. Among the most notable aspects of Premiere Party is its white-themed dress code. White pants, shorts, hats, boas, shoes and other creative white accessories are encouraged. In other words, start planning now for your look at the event, and think outside the box. 22 // 05.28.2014

Meet the Characters of
I
– Again
f you’re like us, you spent some time last year bingewatching the first season of Orange is the New Black. If you haven’t caught up yet, here’s some incentive to get a start: the second season premieres this Friday, June 6, on Netflix. Just like with the show’s first season, all 13 episodes of the second season will premiere at once.
We know that for many of you, it’s been a while since you’ve watched the series, and with the show’s sprawling cast, it may be hard to keep track of everyone. Luckily for you, we’ve compiled a look at 12 of the show’s biggest characters, including a brand-new one fans should get ready to know. Oh, and if you haven’t watched the first season yet, there may be a few spoilers below. Piper Chapman The show’s central character. Piper’s a bisexual woman who, at the beginning of the show, is sentenced to 15 months for helping her former girlfriend smuggle drug money in Europe 10 years earlier. Alex Vause Piper’s ex-girlfriend. Alex is a former drug smuggler who named Piper as a conspirator as part of a plea bargain. She eventually rekindles her relationship with Piper, who isn’t aware of Alex’s role in putting her in prison. Tiffany “Pennsatucky” Doggett A drug addict who shot an abortion clinic worker in broad daylight. Local press stated that she committed her crime because of religious beliefs, but it was actually because the worker made a snarky comment about it being Pennsatucky’s fifth abortion. Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren A mentally unstable patient with an obsession for Piper. While she’s originally seen as a source of trouble for Piper in her first few weeks in prison, she eventually begins to leave Piper alone. She also acknowledges being hurt that everyone calls her “Crazy Eyes.”
24 // 05.28.2014
Galina “Red” Reznikov Runs the prison’s kitchen. Although what exactly led to Red’s imprisonment has yet to be revealed, she was at one point involved with the Russian mob. She’s also the leader of the prison’s white population. Nicky Nichols A former drug addict. Nicky is Red’s most trusted girl, and she views Red as a mother figure. She develops friendships with both Piper and Alex, expressing curiosity about what happened between them outside of prison. She later develops an interest in Alex. Sophia Burset In prison for credit card fraud. Sophia was originally a firefighter named Marcus who transitioned with the support of her wife. Sophia committed the fraud to finance her operation and hormone therapy. Yvonne “Vee” Parker Meet your newest inmate. Vee is described as a street-tough inmate who used to run a drug business, using kids as runners. She’s a returning inmate, with many of the long-time prisoners unhappy about her returning presence into their lives. Dayanara “Daya” Diaz Part of the prison’s Latina population. Daya has a strained relationship with her mother, who forced Daya to take care of her other children. Daya begins a relationship with a prison guard, Bennett, and eventually becomes pregnant. John Bennett A new prison guard who develops a relationship with Daya. He has an artificial leg which is originally believed to be from his tour in Afghanistan, though it’s later revealed to be from an infection from a dirty hot tub in Florida. Aleida Diaz Daya’s mother. She took a fall for her drugdealer boyfriend. Her relationship with Daya is rough; at one point, she attempts to seduce Bennett to anger Daya. When Daya becomes pregnant, though, she concocts a plan to let Bennett keep his job. George “Pornstache” Mendez A corrupt prison guard who frequently abuses his authority. He attempts to use Red to smuggle drugs into the prison, but she refuses. He’s put on unpaid leave when set up to be caught having sex with Daya, in order to protect Bennett. photos: Netflix

Bianca DEL RIO The David Atlanta Interview
B
BY ELIJAH SARKESIAN
eing a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race can give a monumental boost to a drag queen’s career; winning the show puts them on another level. With the most recent season of Drag Race finally wrapped up, season six winner Bianca Del Rio is quickly learning just how in-demand she is now. Less than a month after winning the show, she’ll be making her first Atlanta appearance in over a decade at Jungle on June 17. I caught up with Bianca before her appearance later this month to talk about her time on Drag Race, her relationship with Atlanta’s Trinity K. Bonet, and what Atlanta audiences can expect when they see her live.
becoming friends with Trinity. One of my favorite things. I didn’t expect it, and in retrospect, I can watch and say that’s a good thing, because we didn’t get along in the beginning, and it all shifted in the process, and in the end, she became one of my favorite people. DA: I know for us in Atlanta, we take a lot of pride in Trinity’s run on the show, so it’s great knowing that the two of you get along so well now.
BDR: Oh my God, she’s amazing! I mean, she’s a brilliant performer, and I was so grateful when I was looking back and David Atlanta: First, congratulations! How does it watching the show, I was like, “Thank God I didn’t have to lipsync against that bitch.” She is a fierce performer. So I why would I bottom on the show? So that’s good. (Laughs) I think wasn’t really surprised by any of it. I just knew that, hey, it came that, looking back on it, one of the things I’ve enjoyed most was with the territory. davidatlanta.com // 29
But you’ve gotta remember, for all of us, we didn’t know what each other was saying or how deep we were all getting in the water, because we were unsure of what each person was discussing in their confessionals or in the moment. It wasn’t until we watched it that we realized that Darienne was fighting with Ben. I didn’t know that when I was there. Or how serious situations were amongst other people. You’re not privy to all this information. You don’t know the seriousness of all of it until you watch it, and then it’s like, “Oh, shit! This was happening?” So for me, that was kind of shocking. DA: You’ve worked with a number of drag queens from Atlanta, from Trinity to RuPaul and Lady Bunny. What do you think of our city’s drag queens? BDR: Well, I never worked with Ru until the show. But Bunny, I knew. She’s hilarious, and insanely crazy. But what I think is great – I from New Orleans, and Southern queens are different, I find. Southern queens get it. Southern queens understand what it’s like to put on a show. And the great thing about making the show is that we all do something different, and we all deliver. And the great thing about people like Trinity and Bunny, and obviously Ru is successful at what she’s doing, is in the moment. We all have our niche – that thing that we like that we do well. Together, it creates this awesome balance. I usually host the show, and people perform, and it works for me. I sit back and applaud anybody who can lip-sync the house down, like Trinity, or geniuses like Bunny who have incredibly, insanely interesting wit in all areas of comedy. I think all of it’s good. The minute you have
i 30 // 05.28.2014
diversity in a cast, it makes for a good show. Because some people come to a show, and they hate me, and they love them, that’s the balance of it. We’re not giving them all one note for the entire night. DA: You’re performing at Jungle on June 17. What can Atlantans expect when they see you live? BDR: Well, I don’t have a new album. I don’t have a song to sell. I’m here to work – I’m here for comedy. So if you have a sense of humor, definitely come check me out. But you know, no holds barred. I love being live with people, and I’ve been traveling recently, and what I’ve been doing is a lip-sync number, which I haven’t done in years, and I’ve also been doing some standup. So expect to see some standup, funny audience interaction – no holds barred. I love – I love a moment, and I love conflict. So we’ll see what happens. DA: Now that you’ve won Drag Race, what’s next? BDR: Oh my God. Well, there’s two things I’ve been working on. One of them’s a one-woman drag show that I’m writing for myself, that I want to do in different cabaret bars and theaters throughout the country. And the other thing is a film a friend of mine and I are working on. It’s called Hurricane Bianca, and – most people don’t know that in 29 states, it’s still legal to be fired for being gay. The movie that we’re doing is a comedy, obviously, based on this guy who’s a schoolteacher, who gets fired and decides to get revenge on the town by returning as Bianca Del Rio in drag as a substitute teacher. We’ve been talking about it for the past two years, and I was doing some fundraising for it prior to Drag Race, and then I left to do the show, so I couldn’t talk about it for a minute. But now that I’m done with the show, I have something to shoot over the summer.
Bianca Del Rio appears at Jungle on June 17 as part of a special Fantasy Girls night, hosted by Phoenix and featuring Mariah Paris Balenciaga, Alissah Brooks, Destiny Brooks, Evah Destruction and Raquell Lord. Reserved seating for the event has sold out, but a limited number of tickets will be available at the door. The show is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. For more information, visit jungleatl.com.

ven though it’s largely gone, the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy still serves as a significant piece of legislation in the persecution of gays and lesbians in American society. Before the law’s passage, though, gays and lesbians were still subjected to persecution based on the slightest of allegations.

We started filming at the end of 2010, and then started our edit, then raised some more money so that we could actually do the edit the proper way, and then we actually shot more. We had some pickup days we had to raise money for. It was one of those kind of things.

fairyscopes ARIES (March 20 – April 19):
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22):
He’s thrown down a number of gauntlets, but you’ve overcome all the obstacles. He’s locked all the doors, but you found the keys. He tried driving away in the car, but you’ve siphoned all the gas. By now he should be getting the picture that you’ve got your sights set on him. Try some gentle persuasion today. It’ll work better than the battering ram.
Too much overindulgence is finally catching up with you. Emotional problems may have you eating for comfort, and it was cheering you up until you got on the scale. Getting to the root of what’s bothering you could be a way to stop the madness. Figure it out, or hire a professional. It could always be worse. You could be smoking instead of eating.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20):
SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21):
You’ve had him come around strictly for your enjoyment, but now you find you have deeper feelings for him. You love how you relate to each other, and he brings a fun energy to your life. You weren’t prepared for a romance, but here it is. Let him in further today. This diamond in the rough may turn out to be a keeper.
Today will be all about flexibility. Keeping your sanity in your relationship will call for compromises today. You like things done your way, and that’s not good for everyone, especially those who have to be around you every day. You have to admit you can be demanding, so let your partner have a say. Relationships are better when everyone feels equal.
GEMINI (May 21- June 20):
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20):
People can’t tell if your flighty personality is really you, or a clever act designed to lure guys into your cute little web. It’s both, actually, as flirting becomes you, and you’ve learned how to harness that power to your advantage. Watch how far you go today. Once they find out you’re all talk, they may want you to put your money where your mouth is.
You’re beginning to look at your relationship in terms of the smaller details, and not just one big picture. Putting your relationship under a microscope is always good, and seeing the tinier aspects helps you appreciate each other as individuals, as well as partners. Being surprised by interesting personality aspects is part of the fun of healthy relationships.
CANCER (June 21- July 22):
CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):
Introductions were made, pleasantries were exchanged, drinks were bought and phone numbers were shared, as was a quick kiss at the end of the night. Now what? Let him call me first, you think. In the meantime, he’s probably thinking the same thing. If you want that man, pick up that phone, and get him. Dancing about won’t get you anywhere.
Through the years you’ve been tempted by many persuasive men who continually test your fidelity. But you’ve remained faithful to your partner, and you have the maturity to realize what you stand to lose. Your partner may have no idea of these challenges, and you may not want to tell him. He may have a few sordid stories of his own you’d rather not hear.
LEO (July 23 – August 22):
AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):
You’ve got a number of unfinished projects on the back burner, and they bear the names of people you said you’d call. Don’t string people along by making promises you have no intention of keeping. Make it a point today to be honest. Thank them for the number, but tell them you’re not interested. Be up front before shoving them to the back.
You love hearing stories from the past, and your older relatives are a goldmine. Through their tales, you can learn things about them that you never knew, and it helps you appreciate them more. Let them talk today. You’ll see that at one point in their lives, they were just like you, but with simpler lives, and goals removed from our challenging technological times.
VIRGO (August 23 – September 22):
PISCES (February 19 – March 19):
You’ve a taste for foreign cultures today, but your bank account will keep you close to home. Even somewhere as familiar as home can still offer some foreign intrigue. Wine and cheese from Italy can be had at your local grocer, and delicious Thai take out is everywhere. Use your imagination, and you can go around the world in a day.
You’ve marinated chicken breast in red wine and soy sauce. Let’s see, how about some garlic mashed potatoes, kale, scallion and mushrooms sauteed in olive oil and a nice salad with arugula and mixed veggies. You’ve got some soft music on, and a nice bottle of cabernet. Everything’s ready, and it’s time to eat. Alone. In front of the TV.

Bitch SESSION
Stop trying so hard. There is no A- or B-List in this “strip-mall-hell” town. Try wearing your stone-colored khakis in a real city with some culture, and see how far you get.
SEND US YOUR BITCHES! Text 404.969.BTCH or email bitch@davidatlanta.com
You can’t make me believe there’s a shortage of jobs in this country when there are 23 cash registers at WalMart and only 3 cashiers. There’s something about these country boys. They aren’t super attractive, but you know they’d nail you like a hammer.
So you would suck dick like a French bitch, but never accept the fact that someone sees you as a real person? Are you nuts? Don’t even answer, ‘cause nuts are already in your mouth.
Will you still love me when I’m no longer young and beautiful?

Oprah made her chai tea latte at Starbucks by using children’s tears from third world countries.
Facebook will be the death of me.
I miss taking showers with another guy. They’re so much fun.
Saying that you care for me is one thing, proving it takes more than just words. Remember: if someone doesn’t want to fuck you, it’s your problem, not theirs.
