Taking Responsibility for Language
“If there was ever a contemporary film that illuminates why queer cinema still matters, this is it.” – Film Comment
“Beautifully observed. A hypnotic film.” –The Advocate
P
eople say stupid things all the time. Sometimes, public figures say something stupid. In some of those cases, they’re called out for their inappropriate comments or language. When this happens, an apology will typically be issued within a day. There are plenty of cases where the apology seems half-assed at best. I’d like to point to one that, for me at least, actually gets it right. I’m talking about Jonah Hill’s statements following an outburst directed at a paparazzo that was then released by TMZ. The outburst, in case you missed it: “Suck my dick, you faggot.” Yeah, that’s definitely not a proud moment for Hill. Shortly after the clip was published online, Hill (who’s currently promoting his upcoming film 22 Jump Street) found himself on Howard Stern’s radio program, where he brought up the clip. While his statement started off explaining the situation and acknowledging his mistake, he took an interesting turn halfway through: “I’m happy to take the heat for using this disgusting word. What I won’t allow is for anyone – it would break my heart to think that anyone – especially with all the work that I’ve done and all the loved ones that I have – that I would be against anyone for their sexuality.”
a film by CHRIS MASON JOHNSON
San Francisco 1985
My biggest problem with most apologies from celebrities when they get in trouble is how quickly they want to sweep the incident under the rug and move on, if for no other reason than the fact that it won’t go away that quickly. Instead, Hill acknowledges that his statement will likely not curb all of the negative attention, and that he accepts the consequences of his statement. On The Tonight Show, he went a step further: “I don’t deserve or expect your forgiveness, but what I ask is that at home, if you’re watching this, and you’re a young person especially; if someone says something that hurts you or angers you, use me as an example of what not to do, and don’t respond with hatred or anger. Because you’re just adding more ugliness to the world. I’m so sorry.” Rather than beg for forgiveness, he asks that this incident turn into a teachable moment. While I’m still disappointed in his behavior in the offending incident, I can’t help but appreciate his willingness to not try and gloss it over. It’s something I certainly hope more celebrities, and people in general, will use as an example of what to do in similar situations.

o often the hardworking folks behind some of the fasted-paced bars in the business, the restaurants, are forgotten and left in the dark. But not anymore. It’s time to shed a little light on one of the best and brightest bartenders in the restaurant bar business. A black belt in Judo, former MMA athlete Thuy T. “Twee-bie” Nguyen has been pouring drinks capable of kicking your ass for 12 years. For the past nine years, Twee-bie’s been loyal to F.R.O.G.S. Cantina, creator and home of the celebrated “Beer Bust.” How did you get your start bartending? I came here [FROGS] one day, I didn’t have a job, didn’t have a home, and the owner, Clint, told me to come in the next day. I was going from town to town, I was living in Guam, living in Atlanta… He gave me a chance. And here I am. My loyalties are to him – I love my boss. We actually all love our boss. He looks out for us; when we need money, when our car is broken down, when we can’t pay rent…he actually goes out of his way to help people. What do you like about the Atlanta nightlife scene? I love the Atlanta nightlife scene! I think it’s a great way to meet people. We are the mecca of gay people. I’ve travelled everywhere in the United States, and I know a lot of people sometimes say they hate the gay scene and stuff, but,we’re pretty damn lucky to have what we have here, compared to any other city. I’ve been to New York, I’ve been to California, and there’s nothing better then being here in Atlanta . 10 // 06.11.2014

What would you be doing it you weren’t bartending? I’d probably be a nutritionist, and do what I went to school for. And be a boot camp trainer. That’s what I normally do – boot camp in the mornings. But I’m here because I love it, and you have to do what you love or you’ll just be dying slowly, a little more every day.

The Atlanta Cotillion was created in 1997 by J. D. Kellum and Jeff Paramore, with the goal of raising awareness and funds for the HIV and AIDS community. After three years of inactivity, the Atlanta Cotillion was reorganized in 2002 and held a fundraiser dubbed “The Debutante Ball” that played homage to Atlanta’s southern roots, with a queen being crowned each ball. As years progressed, leadership changed hands and fundraising milestones were made. In 2004, under the leadership of Edward Holifield, Harrison Perry and Greg Whitmire, Atlanta Cotillion was able to raise over $120,000.

In 2008 AID Atlanta honored Atlanta Cotillion for their work in raising invaluable funds and support, earning them a spot in the Founders Society. AID Atlanta formed in 1982, and has since become the largest and most comprehensive AIDS service organization in the southeast. Providing HIV prevention education, and having served over 3,500 HIV positive individuals; the work that these two organizations do is nothing short of phenomenal.

ith the arrival of summer, it’s time to relax on steamy hot nights and enjoy the return of our favorite shows such as Orange is the New Black (Netflix), True Blood (HBO), and newcomer Penny Dreadful (Showtime).
And let’s not forget America’s Got Talent. AGT is unique in showcasing a wide variety of talent from American contestants. Remember 2007’s Terry Wayne Fator, a Dallasbased comedian, ventriloquist, impressionist and singer? How about the mesmerizing trained dogs of Richard and Nicholas Olate (2012)? And who can forget last year’s winner, Japanese performance artist Kenichi Ebina? One contestant who audiences will never forget is singer, songwriter, and performer John Andrew Quale, who finished in 4th place in Season 5. You know him as Prince Poppycock, who describes himself as a “roguish operatic dandy.” Sharon Osbourne called him “The Male Lady Gaga.” He has been singing and entertaining crowds since he was a child and says he gets his inspiration from artists such as David Bowie, Depeche Mode, and Gilbert and Sullivan, to name a few. The Prince will be performing June 21 at Cirque de Nuit en Rouge, an avant-garde ball benefiting AID Atlanta. This is a 21 and over event, and photo ID is required. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and close at 11:00 p.m. For more information, go to atlantacotillion.com.

Prince Poppycock: I love Atlanta! I have family in Macon, and it was always fun for me to stop through as a child. One of our last stops on the AGT tour was also in Atlanta, and we had such a warm welcome. I’m not entirely sure myself what will be taking place at the Cotillion. Production is in development now, but I can tell you that a very special guest celebrity choreographer has donated his time and talents to making my Atlanta appearance as snazzy as it can be. Since AGT I’ve had to deal with the realities of being an internationally recognized artist who is still independently produced. I have no record contract, no management, and no production support behind me (besides my tried and true team that has stuck with me all this time), so there is constant pressure to recreate the same caliber of performances that were seen on AGT but at a fraction of the budget, and without the amazing support of a #1 television show’s production team. That’s a pretty hard bargain to fulfill, so oftentimes I stay true to the K.I.S.S. philosophy (keep it simple stupid) rather than reaching for a Busby Berkeley Technicolor spectacular every time (though I’d like it to be). What I never will compromise, however, is my commitment to my craft, be it costuming, music, or especially my vocal performance. DA: Other than being widely recognized and having a much busier schedule, how has life changed for you four years after AGT? Are you where you hoped or thought you’d be in your career? PP: The adjustment period was fairly difficult. A lot of realityshow contestants experience a post-traumatic period after the show. There was a fairly dramatic and abrupt change that followed. I also am no closer to my professional goals. While I had a fouroption contract with Sony, a fancy agent and management deal, and plenty of interest from Hollywood and Vegas, ultimately everyone only saw risk and expense and ultimately never ‘green lit’ any of it. So while I do enjoy
“I’m not a fan of labels, but on the other hand no word ever has or ever will hurt my feelings.”
DA: You have been open in sharing your past experiences as a victim of bullying and dropping out of high school. How has your success changed or affected your attitude toward the bullies in your past? PP: It really hasn’t. It has given me satisfaction. I’ve been given validation for all my choices that my peers called “freakish.” I’ve never given someone’s disapproval a second thought, and now I’m more committed to that principle then ever. The world is changing so fast right now. It’s remarkable to see the changes in equality that are occurring today, changes that I’ve been wishing and hoping for for decades are all coming true, and we get to see it. Positive change doesn’t come about by disapproving or judging others. It comes from a dedication to you inner ideals, and not backing away from your opposition. DA: Organizations like The Trevor Project, which the benefits of an increased visibility and busy work schedule, you have supported, are so important in our comI still have many of the same goals that I did before AGT. munity. What do you say to young kids who live in fear because they are different, perhaps in some DA: Are you still based in Los Angeles? How much way like you, and are afraid to come out or be time do you spend traveling each year? themselves? PP: Yes, I still live in Los Angeles with my cat and pot belly piggy. I’m fortunate to get to travel to a lot of wonderful places, and am often on the road. I just performed in Vegas, San Francisco, and next is Atlanta. Coming up I have Long Island, Oslo and Jamaica! DA: Do you consider your performances a form of drag? How do you feel about labels such as “drag queen” or “drag king”? Are they necessary? PP: Well, I think anything can be considered drag…businessmen, housewives, leather daddies, or jocks are all wearing a form of drag. But in the traditional sense of the word (dressed resembling a girl) I don’t think it’s drag. However, I do take a lot from many of the underlying influences of drag including mime, comedia d’el arte, clowning, geisha/kabuki, and opera, of course. I’m not a fan of labels, but on the other hand no word ever has or ever will hurt my feelings. DA: How supportive is your family of your art and success? Are you “single, taken or it’s complicated”? PP: I think my family was a bit surprised that I actually pulled it off but very happy for my success. Along the way I think a lot of my choices perplexed them, but they can see the method to my madness now. I’m very single and very available! DA: If you don’t mind sharing, what can you tell us about your coming-out experience? PP: I think I was 15 or 16 and down in Florida for Christmas. I met a boy I had been writing on America Online (don’t judge me). I think it was always fairly obvious to my family, though it did strike a lot of concern for my safety. 18 // 06.11.2014
PP: I say think for yourselves. An environment of bullying has caused the gay community to become bullies themselves. There is a pervasive Stockholm syndrome in the gay community, where the oppressed is now identifying with the oppressor. Straight men are currently more in touch with their feminine sides, and as long as gay men demonize the feminine in themselves they will all be incomplete, non-functioning human beings, completely incapable of actual healthy relationships. I say follow your heart, and don’t react because someone tells you that a part of you is not desirable. Don’t turn away from a side of yourself in order to become accepted into clone culture. Gay history is filled with the heroism of the ‘others’ that is able to champion our cause because of the adversity that they faced… not because they had eight-packs and were accepted into the “A Gays.” There should be room for the true diversity of our community to shine through and not a race to be all the same.

pace of 30 miles per hour in New York, and Atlantans don’t. So sometimes, it’s happened where I’ve been with people, and I walk ahead of them, they give me a little warning that it’s not very safe to do. “And there’s also the way you approach different individuals and how you ask questions in certain ways, because I’ve noticed that here in the South, like, certain code ways of asking to get the direct answer, instead of it being the polite answer. But that’s been a pretty significant cultural shift for me.”
A Year of Transitions:
AID Atlanta Gets New CEO, Methods in 2014 By Elijah Sarkesian
A
s the largest AIDS service organization in the Southeast, AID Atlanta’s profile in Atlanta’s LGBT community is unparalleled – so it’s hard to understate the significance of the transitions taking place at the organization.
That transition kicked off in earnest this January, when Dr. Jose Rodriguez-Diaz joined AID Atlanta as its new CEO, after a year of management under interim CEO Cathy Woolard. Accepting the position saw Rodriguez-Diaz move to Atlanta after 17 years in New York City, where he managed a multi-year, multimilliondollar federal and state grant for the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System. For Rodriguez-Diaz, accepting the job has meant undergoing some significant transitions of his own. That includes spending significant amounts of time away from his partner and their daughter, who are still living in New York while his daughter finishes kindergarten. Still, Rodriguez-Diaz’s move to Atlanta has seen him quickly find his way in Atlanta’s large LGBT community.
Transitions in and around Rodriguez-Diaz go beyond his personal life, though. His selection as AID Atlanta’s new CEO was made with a specific purpose – transitioning AID Atlanta toward a more self-sustaining model. “The number one thing that the organization is focusing on now is a whole transformation, and finding a way to be less dependent on federal, state and local dollars and grants, and being more self-sustainable through patient billings and other programs, which will also allow us to be more flexible with the programs that we have,” says Rodriguez-Diaz. “Now, we’re at the mercy of the federal government saying, ‘This year, our focus isn’t going to be around youth, so we’re going to defund you on youth and focus on white MSM.’ There’s a whole cultural and operational shift that has to happen, and sometimes it costs us more money to do that than us being able to dictate ourselves what types of programs and populations we want to work with, based on the need of the community and the funding that we have ourselves to be able to support it. What does that mean for AID Atlanta’s services? Start expecting to see a broader range of services. That includes a retail pharmacy that opens July 1 and a wellness center with chiropractic care and nutritional services that’s also opening soon. Later this year, AID Atlanta will also offer a dental practice and OB/GYN care. In 2015, services will expand to include insemination services for LGBT couples looking to start families.
“I think the agency has really seen an opportunity to service the LGBT community more holistically, and be able to really evolve programs and services here that are culturally appropriate and specific to the community we’ve been serving for 32 years,” says Rodriguez-Diaz. “All of this is keeping in line with being able to bring in dollars, so that we can continue to program for people “I’ve been attending a lot of public events, such as events for living with HIV without having to be so structured around it by Joining Hearts,” says Rodriguez-Diaz. “I’ve also had individual these types of grants we’ve been working with since the start meetings with some of the key figures in the community who of the agency.” might be helpful and are looking forward to this transformation AID Atlanta is going through. After 17 years in New York, though, Rodriguez-Diaz has had to “We don’t want to, and we’re not going to, push away from the learn to adjust to life in a city that operates a little differently. core value of eradicating HIV. ith athletes such as Michael Sam, Derrick Gordon and Brittney Griner coming out of the closet, the world of professional sports is starting to grow closer and closer to the LGBT community. The Atlanta Dream, Atlanta’s own professional women’s basketball team, has hosted an LGBT night for the past couple of years to raise money for local gay charities. This year, they’re back as an official part of Atlanta Pride’s Stonewall Month with a special LGBT night on Friday, June 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Philips Arena. With more special guests and give-a-ways, this year is bound to be the best yet. The event was first born in 2012, when the Atlanta Dream went up against a team from France. They collaborated with Georgia Equality to raise money for Campaign for Safe Schools. It was an instant hit and word spread about an amazing event. The program’s success led to another LGBTthemed night in 2013, which in turn led to this year’s event.
In case you’re not familiar with the Atlanta Dream, you should know that Atlanta’s WNBA team is a major player in the league. Since the team was founded in 2007, the Atlanta Dream has qualified for the WNBA Playoffs in five of its six years and has reached the WNBA Finals three times – in 2010, 2011 and 2013.
This year, the ladies are up against the ladies of New York Liberty, so it’s sure to be a good game. There is a special ticket for this year’s event, where 30% of the proceeds from these tickets will be split between the Human Rights Campaign and the Atlanta Pride Committee. All you have to do to see a portion of your ticket price go to these organizations is use the promo code “Pride” when checking out.
This event is always a fun time, with cheap tickets, surprise guests and more. So, come on out, watch some basketball and help raise money for two amazing charities. But get your tickets fast because they will sell out.

Anniversaries Highlight Fox Theatre’s Summer Film Series
W
hile it may be known today as a premier venue for stage and concert productions, Atlanta’s historic Fox Theatre was originally created as a movie palace. It’s fitting, then, that the Fox Theatre is the host of the 2014 Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival, a summer-long lineup of some of Hollywood’s biggest classics. This year’s lineup focuses heavily on classics celebrating anniversaries – of the 14 features slated for the summer, nine are celebrating anniversaries this year. They include some classics long associated with the LGBT community, including The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind and The Women. Each event includes not only the film screening, but a special pre-show experience with a sing-along and a vintage cartoon. On top of that, special movie tours will be available prior to each screening. The tours will guide visitors through the projection booth, screening room, celebrity dressing rooms, and the historic Fox Theatre stage. Tours are limited to 20 people per individual tour; tour tickets can be purchased at the same time as screening tickets. Tickets for most screenings are currently $10 in advance and $12 at the door, though there are some exceptions. Gone with the Wind, Mary Poppins and the double feature of Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Gone with the Wind and Mary Poppins tickets include reserved seating; the latter, which is playing as a singalong, has a special group discount rate of $12. All tickets for the Saturday Morning Cartoons special are $5. Tickets are available at the Fox Theatre box office, at foxtheatre.org, or at 855-285-8499.

fairyscopes ARIES (March 20 – April 19):
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22):
Nothing makes you feel more virile than a vigorous workout. So find some time today to hit the gym. Breaking a sweat will help relieve stress, and you’ll have plenty of eye candy to keep from focusing on the intense pain you’re inflicting on yourself.
Take an active interest in the people you meet today. It’s always good getting to know people past a surface level. Who knows, you may meet a guy who you’ll want to go deeper with. Much, much deeper.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20):
SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21):
Be tolerant of the shortcomings of others today. Treating people with arrogance gives you the off-putting air of superiority of an Addison deWitt. Patience and tolerance are two basic human traits you seem to be in short supply of these days, but give them a try anyway.
Today will not be a good one to ask for a loan, unless you like hearing no, no, no! You may have to cut back on spending for a while, making decisions based on need and priority. So if you don’t eat for the next few weeks you’ll be able to take full advantage of clearance sales.
GEMINI (May 21- June 20):
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20):
This will be a good day to put some of your ideas into action. There may be higher-ups who are impressed, and people will suddenly be taking you seriously. Avoid the inevitable ego swell that goes along with such stature. People paid attention to Corey Feldman for a while, and now look at him.
You’ll need to be optimistic to get through a potentially pessimistic day. Paint on a smile and bring as much cheer to others as you can. But like doomed ‘Titanic’ captain John Smith, you may have to acknowledge that the ship is going down, and you’ll have to find a ladies dress pronto!
CANCER (June 21- July 22):
CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):
You’ll be the torchbearer today, the one everyone expects to lead them through the darkness. You won’t have a problem with that, because it puts you at the center of attention. But have a plan before you start. What good is holding the light if you don’t know the way out?
Personal problems will mount today and by day’s end you’ll wish you were a monk. Except you’d like to wear something a little more contemporary than those archaic robes. And there’s no way you’re cutting your hair. Hmmm, maybe being a monk isn’t such a good idea, after all.
LEO (July 23 – August 22):
AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):
You breeze into situations with the confidence of a Hollywood celebrity, without the limo and posse, of course. But guys are attracted to your manly poise. Be careful of bending the truth too far. A job at the video store technically puts you in show business, but not in the manner they think.
Keeping your impulses under control today could keep you out of a lot of trouble. Too much of everything will beckon today, and you’ll want to take full advantage. But a simple ‘no’ could keep you from waking up hungover in the bed of someone you don’t even know.
VIRGO (August 23 – September 22):
PISCES (February 19 – March 19):
There will be too much going on all at once today, but good luck in trying to put on the brakes. Stay flexible and go with the flow. Gliding along on a current is a lot more fun than trying to swim against it.
Trying to stay in focus today will take all of your mental capabilities. There may not be much available so expect to drift in and out today. Fantasy and reality may blur, so don’t be alarmed by a vision of your barista in a loincloth brandishing a whip. Whether that turns you on is another story.

itch, please! It never fails ... whenever I check my messages, there’s always a baby momma or baby daddy in peril. The dilemma usually involves an unexpected pregnancy. Look, I totally understand that shit happens, but these fools need to get on the pill and rubber the dick up! Unfortunately, neither parties bother to find out if they’re even feeling one another and before you know it - there’s a baby on board. This week’s Favorite Bitch is all about investing in some goddamn rubbers!
Dear Miss Tiger, Me and Andre were fucking like three times a day. He said condoms were getting too expensive so we stopped using them. I know we shouldn’t have because now I’m pregnant. He won’t even help buy my prenatal vitamins. He works for the city and makes good money. He says I’m asking for too much. I need some advise. -Brooke

Bitch SESSION
TRICK. That’s all we did, and now you don’t have enough manners to say hello in the gym. If you’re that hung up, don’t trick with guys in your gym!

I’m still inexperienced when it comes to dating, but even I know standing someone up is incredibly rude. If you don’t want to go out, just say so.

Your self-proclaimed “A-list entitlement” is obnoxious and disgusting. You’re a fucking human being like everyone else. I’m so tired of hearing 40-somethings say this A-List shit! Honey, you were a twink less than five years ago, so please let New York and LA have that shit! We ALL get along here in the South. Don’t like it? Go back where you’re from! We don’t have time for that shit here!
Your boyfriend looks amazing for thirty. And by amazing, I mean awful.

In case you DID hear me, I’m STILL not talking to you.
Work out all you want. It’ll never fix that face.
Why are you blowdrying your pubic hair at the gym? And why do you have that much hair down there that it needs blowdrying to begin with?
I meet up with some guy for a date, and OMG – he actually has a sense of humor! I had no clue that still existed. I wonder why older dudes like younger dudes so much. Oh, I forgot – two old men can’t receive each others’ benefits.
