Questioning Allies

A

s part of her recent press tour for her new book, Hard Choices, Hillary Clinton was recently interviewed by NPR’s Terry Gross. During one part of the interview, Gross pressed Clinton on the subject of same-sex marriage, which Clinton only endorsed last year. While she attempted to talk around the subject, Clinton eventually became defensive on her behind-the-curve endorsement of same-sex marriage.

I know there’s a certain amount of cynicism associated with the whole idea of politicians “evolving” on same-sex marriage, and it’s not completely unwarranted. But do we need to question those who support same-sex marriage about why they support it? Should their support be enough, or should we question if the move is genuine or not? I’m not sure. As a gay man, I’m fine with the support. As a journalist, I always want to know more. This conflict has made my reaction to the story mixed at best, and I have to assume I’m not the only person Now, I don’t think anyone will deny that in other areas of with such a reaction. importance to the LGBT community, Clinton has been a notable ally. As Secretary of State, she fought homophobia in other countries regularly. But as a potential candidate for the presidency in 2016 (because really, who doesn’t think she’s running at this point?), this particular issue does carry some weight. More Americans support same-sex marriage than ever, and the growth of states that allow same-sex marriage make this a potential hot-button issue in the 2016 campaign.

leaning houses by day and working five out of seven days by night, the incredibly funny Neal Stringer, a.k.a. Chenille, has been behind the bar at Heretic for nine years. With the busy schedule he keeps, Neal doesn’t have time for much of anything more than catching up on TV shows with a nice glass of wine, and spending time with his boyfriend in his free time. What’s your favorite drink to make? What is your signature drink?

I love to make Bloody Mary’s. No I don’t – I hate Bloody Mary’s. I tell everyone we don’t have the mix. And they go, “Oh, okay.” I say, “I’m sorry, we’re out. Would you like a Frosty?!” What’s a Frosty? It’s a White Russian. “Okay, I’ll try one of those.” I swear to God, I hate making Bloody Mary’s. I won’t do it. And when I do do it, I make ‘em shitty. So they never, ever ask me again. Oh, I make them horrible. It’s stupid… And I don’t like it. What sets Heretic apart from all other ATL bars? The Heretic is a unique bar that has changed over the years in a good way. We have so many different events that appeal to all types of people. We have country nights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and some Saturdays. Each offer free line it two step lessons. We have bear events and a drag show by The Armorettes every third Saturday of the month. What do you like about the ATL nightlife scene? Atlanta has a very diverse community. I enjoy meeting new people every day and learning where they’re from and what they do for a living. I’m a talker and a listener…but you have to be that way in this industry. 10 // 06.18.2014

A Peachy Welcome for

DJ Isaac Escalante By Eugene Salas

T

he Peach Party is coming up, and DJ Isaac Escalante is one of the big names who will bring life to the weekend. He has been all over, and he’s coming back to Atlanta to show us how to have a good time. Originally from Mexico, Escalante went from playing the piano as a child to touring around the world to give parties an extra kick. Specializing in house and tribal music, he has been responsible for the products of tracks such as “Cheater” (2005), “Took My Heart” (2006), “Monaco” (2007) and “Zambomba” (2008). He also remixes track for artists such as Ronen Mizrahi, Bruno Renno, Edson Pride, Fc Nond and Altar. On top of all that, he has been in countless cities around the world, which include Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Madrid, Honolulu, Tel Aviv and Songkran. He has not only made a name for himself, but has clearly left his mark as an international DJ that the world can’t get enough of. We were able to grab a moment out of Escalante’s schedule to ask him a few questions before he comes to spin for us at the Peach Party. David Atlanta: You’ve become an massive DJ that plays all around, traveling to different countries even. How did it all start? What was the spark that pushed you to be a DJ? Among events that he deems as memorable moments in his career, Escalante played at the Roseland Ballroom in New York at the 2013 Pride festival. Mike Pope:

Atlanta’s Dance Chart Representative

T

here are plenty of DJs who have their own followings in cities across the world, but how many of them can say they have an influence on what’s popular nationwide? Atlanta’s own DJ Mike Pope can. He’s a reporter for Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Songs chart, one of Billboard’s many weekly charts that has a unique twist. Each week’s chart is compiled exclusively from playlists submitted by a select group of nightclub Djs.

By Elijah Sarkesian Tony a few times in my career and he’s always so supportive and genuine. I’ll never forget one time I played at XION for an after hours and he danced to my whole set that night. I’m so excited to be working with him again and kicking off Peach Party. DA: You’re currently the resident DJ at Heretic. How did you land the position, and how long have you held the position?

Pope, who also serves as the resident DJ for Heretic, will be playing at the club’s evening as host for Peach Party on Friday, June 20, where he’ll open for DJ Tony Moran. We caught up with Pope to talk about his start as a DJ, his gig with Billboard, and more.

MP: The General Manager, Alan Collins, had heard me spin at several charity events around town and asked if I would be a guest DJ at the club. That night led to more nights that then turned into a residency at the Heretic that I have held for over four years. Saturday nights I spin my Late Night Dance party David Atlanta: How did you get your start as a DJ? and spin at least once at month on Friday nights at the club. Mike Pope: I’ve been a music lover my whole life which is why it’s no surprise that I went to college for Video and Film Production using my education to make music videos for local artists. When I first moved to Atlanta, it was the nightlife scene that introduced me to so much great dance music. After experiencing some amazing DJ sets at clubs like Backstreet and Blu, it wasn’t long until I found myself hanging out in the DJ booths watching and learning from the pros like Tony Moran, Chris Cox and Tracy Young. It wasn’t until 2006 that I finally decided to try my hand at DJing so I bought some equipment and started spinning some parties for friends. I was hooked and I knew that I needed to take things to the next level. That level was a shot spinning at WETbar in 2007 and was a dream come true.

DA: You’re currently a reporter for Billboard. What does that entail? MP: Working with Billboard for the last three years has been an amazing honor and experience. I’m among a diverse group of professional DJs that have been selected to report what songs are working best on our dance floors every week in our clubs. I was fortunate enough to be invited to join the Billboard Dance/Club Play panel during a gig I had in Miami during Winter Music Conference and came on board to represent the Atlanta and Georgia dance music market. That entails listening to lots of dance tracks every week and providing feedback to the record labels and promoters. Having that channel of access to new music is definitely a benefit as a working DJ.

DA: You’re opening for Tony Moran at Peach Party. DA: When you’re not DJing, what do you do? What do you think of Tony? MP: When I’m not DJing, I spend my time sorting and reMP: Tony is actually the DJ that inspired me most and encour- viewing dance music for Billboard, planning my sets, doing aged me to follow my passion of becoming a DJ. ust barely one year old, this Inman Park staple is still a baby. Yet despite its infancy, several of BoccaLupo’s dishes are already being recognized as among “The Best…” of Atlanta dining. In honor of these rock star dishes, BoccaLupo proudly offers all of its greatest hits in an exciting new “Favorites” menu where Chef Bruce Logue, aka the Prince of pasta, shrinks six of his signature items into a four course tour de force.

The antipasti plate carried smaller versions of three favorites. The “Roman fried” cauliflower had a nutty/buttery aroma and was tossed with fresh mint and capers. No antipasti medley is complete without prosciutto, and this stuff from Iowa is just as good as the original. Piled high on grilled flatbread and topped with house made ricotta and Calabrian chilies, the prosciutto is pleasantly accented with a tangy pineapple mostarda. 32 // 06.18.2014

Course Four After a brief respite and a shot of espresso, we were ready for dessert. The velvety panna cotta sat in a pool of tart huckleberries, topped with squid ink cookie crumbs. Georgia peaches from Pearson’s Farm were baked with a white chocolate streusel, served hot with a large scoop of ricotta gelato. A drizzle of thyme infused honey surrounded this alamode treat.

fairyscopes presented by: the armorettes

ARIES (Mar. 20 – Apr. 19): Take some time to chill out and find some balance. It’s great to have goals, and working toward them can give one’s life a sense of purpose. But one-track minds often don’t see all the lovely roses along the way. Smell that? Thought so.

LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22): Your search for Mr. Right may be hampered by your inability to see past the surface. He may look good on the outside, but that’s all there is. Get to know someone before jumping head over heels. He may not be there waiting for you with a net.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 – Dec. 20): It’s good to use your dreams as an insight to what’s going on in your subconscious. In your case, you may want to call a therapist. Perhaps he can best explain the type of dreams that would have Freud, Dr. Phil and the Amazing Kreskin baffled.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 – May 20): You have a tendency to cling to boyfriends with the strangling intensity of an anaconda. Strange, though, that no matter how tightly you coil, they still manage to get away. Perhaps a looser grip will keep them from running away in the first place.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22): Your emotions will determine whether you’re prancing through fields of flowers today, or shaking your fist at the storm clouds. It could go either way and the truth is you won’t be able to control it. You’ll have people around you walking on eggshells, not knowing with which ‘you’ they’re dealing.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 – Jan. 19): Today’s a good one for decision making. Your confidence and research usually produce a sure-fire winner, and you rarely make the wrong choices. Word of this gift may filter to friends, who will ask you to make their decisions for them. Kindly decline, because your superpowers only work on yourself.

GEMINI (May 21- Jun. 20): You may not like taking the risk, but you may have to probe into unknowable depths today. It’ll be strange and new and you may stumble along the way. But you’ll suddenly have a feeling that you’ve been there before, and the rest will be sheer pleasure. Ah, aren’t those first dates the best?

LIBRA (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22): It’s okay to feel selfish today. You do and you do and you do for those people for what? Do unto yourself today, because no one else is going to. Make a list of your five favorite things to do, and rank them in terms of how recently you’ve made time to do them. Then do the one that is at the top of the list -- you deserve it!

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18): A fight with a friend or lover may have you feeling emotionally exposed today. There’s nothing worse than a knock down drag-out brawl with another to make you feel like crap. Offer an olive branch today, and maybe you can talk without coming to blows.

CANCER (Jun. 21- Jul. 22): Your emotions will rage like a storm at sea today. The churning and upheavals will be enough to make a normal man nauseous, but you’ve navigated these waters many times. This tempest will run it’s course, too, and it’ll be smooth waters until the next one blows in.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21): People will be drawn to you like paparazzi to Brangelina today and, for once, you won’t mind the attention. You’ll make the social rounds and enjoy the company of those you meet. They’ll like you, too, until you inevitably start stinging them with that pointed tail. Then they won’t be so enthusiastic.

PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 19): Prepare for a coming onslaught as your emotions begin to rage. You’ll question every aspect of your life shortly before bursting into tears. You’ll scream at people who ask what’s wrong with you, then fall into a pitiful display of self-loathing and despair. You know, just an average day.

Bitch SESSION

Is it bad to hang out with a guy who’s really into you just so you can watch Orange is the New Black?

SEND US YOUR BITCHES! Text 404.969.BTCH or email bitch@davidatlanta.com

How many gay boys got a crash course on the vaginal landscape because of OITNB?

*This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)

Girl, you’ve been photographed in the past three issues of David Atlanta in the same outfit. And yes, I noticed that stain the third time.

Yet another Gay Pride month goes by and Atlanta is too lame to have their Pride Parade. All because a bunch of old queens get upset when they sweat. Pathetic. If you want a buck just for opening my beer at least put a fucking smile on your face.

68 // 06.18.2014

Stop being poor in your skank top. If you’re feeling down, I can feel you up.

So “God” is punishing me for being a whore. Basically got circumcised last night.

“Suck my dick” is only an insult when it’s not worth sucking. There’s nothing more sad than when a drag queen’s tuck slowly becomes undone.
