All Shapes and Sizes

That’s why it’s important to highlight events like the Atlanta Bear Fest. It helps show different parts of the community, and break the stereotype that all gay men have to be a certain size or I’m talking, in part, about body types, and what’s considered conventionally shape to qualify. “sexy” and not. I remember, still quite vividly at times, my initial exposure to all things gay, and among the things I felt at the time was that I didn’t fit in. As a teenager, I didn’t fit the blond-haired, skinny, twink mode that was typically shown. I was heavier, and certainly hairier, than that. ll Shapes and SizesThis week, our lead story is on the annual Atlanta Bear Fest. It’s a personal favorite to cover each year in the magazine, since it highlights a part of our broader community that doesn’t quite fit the stereotypical gay man.

Elijah Sarkesian

Eventually, I figured out that it didn’t really matter, and that there were plenty of guys who would find me attractive. There’d even be some I found attractive back. Go figure. Still, while I think the standard image of what’s considered hot has gotten better (body hair isn’t the taboo that it was a decade ago, for example), I think it requires work – a conscious effort, if you will, to show different parts of the community.

reeders. Without ‘em, none of us would be here – and many times you’ll find an ally in one you wouldn’t expect. Take Tucker Saloon’s beloved bartender, Jason Schildt, but most people only know him as FR8 (pronounced “freight”). At first, one may take him for a roughneck, but he is a goodhearted family man who enjoys a good game of Darts. At the bar for over five years now, FR8 doesn’t care who comes into the dive bar, just as long as they are respectful. Ask him to make you his signature drink, Smurf Piss – with vodka, peach schnapps, Malibu, Amaretto, Blue Curacao, Sour Apple and Grape Pucker, Sweet ‘n Sour and pineapple, it’s bound to start your night off right.

Without calling anyone out or crossing any lines, what is the most shocking thing someone has divulged to you when they were drunk?

The most shocking thing I’ve heard…that’s hard to say. There’ve been so many fruit-loops that have come through here that nothing really shocks me. I did have a lady give me a drawing of her spaceship she had parked outside. It looked like a ladybug with a zipper running down the middle of it... but when I looked, it wasn’t out there. I must have just missed it or something. [Laughs] I find this crap more funny than shocking. There was an incident where DeKalb’s finest called a rollback wrecker out at 4:30 in the morning to load up a guy’ Hoveround wheelchair because they took him to jail and What makes Tucker Saloon special and unique? didn’t know what to do with it. That’s not nearly as funny as the driver’s face when he found out that was what he was I think what makes us special and unique is our customers. picking up. On any given night, we have all different walks of life: young, old, black, white, straight, gay, inebriated, more inebriated… and everyone has a great time together. You don’t have this crowd over here and that crowd over there; everyone’s just having a kick-ass time. It really makes for one hell of a fun night. Do you have any “cardinal rules” when it comes to mixing business and pleasure? What are they? My Cardinal Rules when it comes to mixing business and pleasure are very simple. I’m engaged to a beautiful women named Tracey who satisfies my every need in every way, so what I guess I’m trying to say is…what she don’t know won’t hurt her and what she finds out about we’ll lie like crazy and blame the booze…I’m just kidding, baby! 10 // 07.02.2014

Legendary Children Return with Hot New Show

T

he Legendary Children are in heat this year. They are hot, they are bothered, and best of all, they are dirtier than ever. Drag queens and photographers work together to combine performance art, film, music and writing that’ll please a wide range of people. There might even be a go-go boy or two thrown in as well; a little variety never hurts.

The name “Legendary Children” is a reference to Paris is Burning, the classic documentary that explores the ball community of New York in the mid-to-late ‘80s. Competitors in the ball scene who won consistently, or slayed, were given the honored title “legendary.”

By Eugene Salas Blake England: Blane Bussey contacted me to ask if I would like to be a part of a show that he, Jon, and Matt Terrell were putting together about Atlanta’s drag community. All my friends and muses at the time were drag queens so it was just perfect. I soon realized this was a large and talented group of people coming together to do something that this city (and the south) hasn’t seen in a while, and maybe never before. That first show was Legendary to me and always will be. Edie Cheezburger: I was asked to be part of Legendary Children from the conception. I was a subject of many of the photographers and it was a great way to be involved with a more artistic expression of drag. It’s been interesting to see how it is an evolving group of performers and artists.

We spoke with Jon Dean, one of the creators of the show; Blake England, a photographer; and Edie Cheezburger, one of DA: What are your roles in Legendary Children, the participating drag queens. They gave us some insight on and what part of the art are you involved with? how Legendary Children was shaped and their involvement in the show. very transgressive and in your face. I hope that this event is equally as successful without focusing on one performers hairy balls. DA: What pieces are you excited about this year?

BE: I hope that we can continue reaching new audiences and pushing the boundary of what it means to be LGBTQ in the south. Our community has its own complications that we will continue to explore. We’re not afraid to get weird, try new things, and look like a hot mess sometimes! JD: Do what you love and forget the rest! Being queer is about being different, you don’t have to be gay. You just need to express yourself, get out there, and not just go with the flow. EC: I don’t know that Legendary Children has a manifesto that everyone adheres to. I would say that LC is interested in bringing queer southern art, with an emphasis on drag, to an elevated artistic expression. Out of the bars and into the galleries. DA: Last year’s Legendary Children had a censorship issue. Three photos of Violet Chachki were censored with large sheets of paper after complaints were sent to the gallery. The censorship of Legendary Children received widespread attention from the Huffington Post, VICE, NewNowNext, Creative Loafing and the National Coalition Against Censorship. Will you guys continue to push the envelope and be unapologetic this year?

BE: I am really excited for people to see Edie Cheezburger’s installation. We asked the queens to interpret “In Heat” in their own way and apply it to their performance and Edie takes a unique approach. Lavonia Elberton is bringing her witchy realness and not even I know what the hell it’s going to be about, but I know I’ll be disturbed after I see it. Everyone is giving me life with their performances and installations but part of the beauty of all this is not knowing exactly what anyone’s doing until the last minute. It always culminates into this amazing amalgamation of sexy, weird, scary, and provocative work of art. JD: Lavonia Elberton, our resident witch, always puts on an amazing and powerful show. She will be creating her own unique space upstairs at Mammal Gallery, so get there early to see her performance! My favorite village queen will also be making a surprise appearance via satellite. The show is for one night only, at the Mammal Gallery in Downtown Atlanta on July 5th. Show begins at 8 p.m., and tickets are $9 in advance or $12 at the door. Order tickets online at LegendaryChildrenAtlanta.com. Other drag queens performing include: Brigitte Bidet, Cayenne Rouge, Ellisorous Rex, Evah Destruction, Jaye Lish, Kryean Kally, Lavonia Elberton, Mo’Dest Volgare and Violet Chachki. Photographers for the show are Blane Bussey, Jon Dean, Blake England, Kevin O, Matthew Terrell and Maggie Towe.

BE: Hell yes, we are NOT apologetic. The show is called In Heat; we want to educate this city on hilarity and sexiness. You can also check them out on Facebook at facebook.com/ This is our second time around in Atlanta and it won’t be our legendarychildrenatlanta and on twitter @legendrychildrn. last. You can count on everything being infinitely multiplied from what you saw last time (and from here on out). We are bringing you even more balls mostly thanks to our new edition to the group, Sunni Johnson, whose work I LOVE. JD: We are excited to let loose this time. Drag queens are known for being brash and pushing the envelope. I don’t think we’ve done anything truly offensive yet. If you don’t leave In Heat feeling at least a little bit hot and bothered, we haven’t done our job. EC: Taintgate 2013. I don’t think that drag is ever going to be apologetic. It’s not supposed to be. It’s supposed to be 22 // 07.02.2014

Varuni Napoli: A Slice of Heaven in Midtown

I

n Eat Pray Love, Liz (played by Julia Roberts) decides that her life needs a drastic change that can only be brought about by a yearlong journey of self-discovery that takes her first to Italy. Trapped in the confines of a mediocre existence, eating has become a matter of mere sustenance. Before achieving spiritual harmony, she sets out to rekindle her love of food. Rome provides the perfect setting. Liz scarfs down a decadently layered Napoléon at a crowded café, enjoys gelato in a bustling piazza and inevitably discovers pasta all’amatriciana, a Roman staple. But when Liz wants pizza, she wisely travels to nearby Naples. The birthplace of modern pizza, Napoli is a veritable Mecca for gourmands and pizza connoisseurs. “This is pizza margherita in Napoli! It is your moral imperative to eat and enjoy that pizza,” Liz reminds her calorie conscious friend. Keep in mind that a true Neapolitan pie can easily be finished by one person in one sitting.

By Jameson Parker onions, and aromatic black truffle oil. This robust pie is significantly more filling than the rest, however, and is best when shared. On the other hand, the Don Gaetano is the perfect pie for the lone diner who doesn’t mind a little spice. It is crowned with Calabrian chilies, pancetta, Pecorino and basil and is only $14. Wash it all down with an inexpensive selection of Italian wines by the glass, including Prosecco on tap.

Varuni Napoli’s pizza Margherita is no exception. The dough is just around 3 mm thick at the center. Each pie takes only a few minutes to cook in one of their super-hot ovens. Luca Varuni himself proudly demonstrates the proper way to eat a slice; first by folding in the tip, then by folding the whole thing in half. The True Colors of

Kathy Bates

L

Hollywood Luminary Talks Lesbians, Drag and Uma Thurman BY CHRIS A Z ZOPARDI

ong before dishing lesbian wisdom to Melissa McCarthy’s mess of a character in this summer’s road-trip comedy Tammy, Kathy Bates had the gay community in shackles. It didn’t take a sledgehammer to maintain our obsession with her – it just took the Hollywood icon’s every turn on television (Six Feet Under, American Horror Story), Broadway (’night, Mother) and the big screen (Titanic, Misery).

DA: Melissa said your chemistry with Sandra was instantly palpable. Who are some other women you could see yourself going lesbian for onscreen?

KB: Let me think about that. I do know that I’m just absolutely in love with Sandra, and let me just say that she really brought our relationship to bloom. She brought a lot of love and warmth, and it was her idea to have wedding rings – because of course! – which I hadn’t thought about, and also, really, to think that our First with Fried Green Tomatoes, her 1991 girl dramedy, and relationship is the healthiest relationship in the movie. then with Dolores Claiborne and Primary Colors, Bates has kept us captivated for over four decades, bound to her bound- You know, we’re non-judgmental, and my scene on the dock less greatness. Oh, I could totally see this: I shared a plane trip with Uma Thurman once and I thought Kathy Bates: You have. It was a lot of fun! It really was. And she was pretty cool. I could see doing a movie with her and there was a scene that was cut out of the movie where all the having a lesbian relationship – although I’m much too old for lesbian women on the dock were singing “Fire,” the Bruce her! gonna be allowed to marry, and it’s just like, why does it have to be legislated? How can you legislate something like that, really? Why is it up for discussion? That’s my feeling about it. DA: One of your earliest lesbian roles was in Primary Colors, which is notable for the big wet one you exchanged with your co-star, Stacy Edwards. KB: She was a doll. See, my parents were more of the age of grandparents in the ’60s, which certainly made it difficult for both parties. It took a little bit of doing. So, when I brought gay friends home to visit, it was really kind of funny to see them react. But they embraced them. They just thought it was hysterical that one of my friends, Milton, was walking around in a nightshirt that had been pressed beautifully. They got along with them pretty well. I have to say my parents never said anything to me derogatory about them, which was cool. Unfortunately, one of the guys I was in love with passed away a few years ago from lung cancer, but I’m still very close to the other love of my life. I just saw him in New York – he actually wrote the Vanities play that we did off-Broadway for many, many years; his name is Jack Heifner – and so it’s wonderful that that relationship has continued.

DA: What do you remember of shooting that kissing scene? KB: I was really nervous! (Laughs) I wanted to do it great, you know. I wanted to make it look like we’ve always done it. At the same time, it had to be a shock for Adrian Lester’s character, and Stacy’s so adorable. I loved the fact that everybody assumes she’s straight, or maybe she swings – who knows! I think there’s also that: People are on the spectrum sometimes. So, I just wanted to make it look real and tough and sexy. DA: Let’s talk about your involvement in the upcoming season of American Horror Story: Freak Show. What can you tell us so far?

KB: I gotta be honest with you, I don’t know yet. I have not read a script. Ryan keeps promising scripts. Cherry POM While Southern Comfort-loving frat boys are slinging back Soco and Limes like their paddles depend on it – because heterosexuality is only 55 proof in a house with wall-to-wall dudes – you can take a more sophisticated approach to the New Orleans-born spirit by serving up these come-to-papa Cherry POMs poolside this summer. 1 1/4 oz Southern Comfort Bold Black Cherry 2 oz lemonade 1 oz pomegranate juice Lemon twist garnish Combine liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend. Strain into large rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with lemon twist.

Green Iced Tea

Ocean Thai Berry

Tea sommelier James Labe – did you know there was such a thing? – has created several healthy-as-they-come cocktails using various Numi Organic flavors. This recipe introduces ginger lemon to tequila for a whole new take on teatime.

You can almost hear the bare-chested beach volleyball team slappin’ ass when you put your ear up to the glass. Do you need another reason to get this drink on? 1 1/2 oz Ocean Vodka 2 oz fresh strawberries 1 oz fresh lemonade 4 fresh Thai basil leaves 1 oz club soda Muddle strawberries and Thai basil in the bottom of a shaker. Add Ocean Vodka and lemonade, and bruise. Pour into a collins glass and top with club soda. Garnish with a basil leaf.

1 Numi Decaf Ginger Lemon Tea 3 oz fresh cucumber juice 1 1/2 oz tequila Splash of Lemon Juice Infuse one tea bag in tequila for 30 minutes, then remove bag, squeezing out excess. Combine and stir ingredients. Serve on the rocks. Garnish with lime wedge.

Berentzen Pear Bramble Berentzen – well known for its fruit liqueurs in Europe – has set its sights stateside with a slew of back-porch-perfect recipes ideal for unwinding on a balmy summer’s eve. If you happen to live in a place where you can pick your own berries, all the better. 1 oz Berentzen Pear 1 oz gin 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice 3/4 oz simple syrup 4 blackberries 1 pear slice Muddle three blackberries in mixing glass. Add Berentzen Pear, gin, lemon juice and simple syrup. Stir gently and strain into large rocks glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with a blackberry and slice of pear.

Re-Introducing

FERRAS Singer/Songwriter Stages a Comeback with Friend Katy Perry BY ELIJAH SARKESIAN 38 // 07.02.2014

I

t pays to have friends in high places. That’s where out singer Ferras finds himself these days. The singer, who made an initial splash back in 2008 when his song “Hollywood’s Not America” was used as the departure song on American Idol, has made his way back into the public eye thanks to longtime friend Katy Perry. Just last week, Katy announced the formation of her own label, Metamorphosis Music, and has Ferras signed as the first artist on the label. On top of that, she announced that Ferras will serve as an opening act on the North American leg of her Prismatic World Tour.

she does have a really great instinct. It’s one of the things I appreciate about her professionally and as a friend. DA: As you mentioned, you were signed to Capitol before. What have you learned professionally since Aliens & Rainbows came out?

F: Everything. (Laughs) When I had my first record, I was really young and I wasn’t really ready for what it meant to go out and have a record. There were definitely things I wanted to say, and that’s who I was then. The amount of industry knowledge you get just having gone through that experience, We caught up with Ferras during his hectic week to talk about and then being on the other side, venturing into songwriting his brand new self-titled EP, working with Katy, and what the for other artists – you live a lot of life in a few years, in terms years since his debut album have taught him. of being a songwriter in that kind of world. David Atlanta: Congratulations on being signed to Katy Perry’s new label, and for getting your new EP out! You’ve been friends with Katy for a few years now. How did you two get together in this particular professional context? Ferras: Well, like you said, Katy and I have been friends for a number of years, and I’ve just been working on my music ever since I parted ways with Capitol the first time in 2008. I started writing for other artists, and just doing my own thing. One day in Paris, Katy was like, “I want to sign you to this new label that I’m doing.” I was like, “Wait, what? What are you talking about?” (Laughs) And she was really adamant about making this happen. “I believe in you, and I think we can do this.” I was ecstatic.

“In 2008, there was the gay issue. ‘Is he gay? Is he not gay?’ Whatever. And I think we’re in a really exciting time right now, and I think you can be whoever you are and do whatever you do. That’s what I’ve learned, to not think about it too much and just go, and just do.”

I think what I’ve learned is that you have to be really authentic to what it is that you do and who you are, and when you’re trying to be something that you’re not, it never really comes across in a way that people will resonate with. Not that I wasn’t before, but I’m just more open about who I am now. I’m in a really good place in my life, and there’s nothing that I’m hiding or trying to skirt around. In 2008, there was the gay issue. “Is he gay? Is he not gay?” Whatever. And I think we’re in a really exciting time right now, and I think you can be whoever you are and do whatever you do. That’s what I’ve learned, to not think about it too much and just go, and just do. DA: Of course, you’re joining Katy on tour. What can audiences expect? Are you going to stick with new material, or can people expect some of your older material as well?

F: All-new material. I’m focusing on all-new material. I’m a totally different person now than I was six years ago, and that’s where I want to be in, that space. Celebrating what’s happening for me now, in the space that I’m in. I’m going to have a 30-minute space as an opener, and it’s going to be very cool. I’m probably doing seven songs, and rehearsing a DA: So what is Katy like in this context, as opposed bunch. It’s exciting for me. I’m also experimenting with getto just as friends or collaborators? ting out, up and away from the piano, and kind of jumping around the stage and feeling that energy. So that’s going to be F: She’s really awesome. One thing about Katy that’s really a new thing for me, a little bit. I’m really excited. great is that she’s super to-the-point and she’s not the kind of person to say, “Oh, I love it!” if she doesn’t, so I know whenFerras opens for Katy Perry at the Prisever I go to her, I’m going to get a straight, honest opinion, matic World Tour. His EP, Ferras, is now even if it’s what I don’t want to hear. And we definitely have available digitally. For more information our squabbles here and there. If I’m super-passionate about on Ferras, visit him online at facebook. something, and she’s like, “Really? How about you look at it com/ferras or on Twitter (@ohferras). this way?” It’s good to have that alternate opinion, because So that just started the process, and it was about a year or more where we were just going through how we were going to do it, playing music back and forth and taking it slowly. But yeah, that’s how it happened. She just kind of threw it on me one day.

fairyscopes ARIES (March 20 – April 19):

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22):

Careful with finances today. Hard work has paid off nicely, and you’ll be tempted to spend. Go ahead and reward yourself. In the past you’ve been stung by impulse buying, so spend your money on something sensible. That mounted swordfish head won’t look as cool as you think.

Houseguests (perhaps unexpected) are likely in your future -- you can expect a ‘We’re coming to visit!’ email soon. Whether they’re second cousins or friends from college, be graciously hospitable. You’ll be rewarded.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20):

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21):

Flattery will get you everywhere today, as you find that handing out compliments will open many doors for you. But it won’t take long for people to figure out that all your grandstanding amounts to little more than serious butt-kissing. Then those doors will be hitting you in your own butt as you leave.

You’re like Indiana Jones today, ambushed at every turn, chased by marauding packs of mercenaries and forced to make acrobatic escapes from tight situations with daring aplomb. And that’s just grocery shopping. Keep your head down, and make the best of it today. Wait until you see what’s waiting for you at work.

GEMINI (May 21- June 20):

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20):

Don’t sidestep issues today, especially in your relationship. Face them head-on, even if it leads to a dust-up. Out of chaos comes order, and sometimes a little squabble is needed to clear the air. Work through your problems as adults, and see it as a growing process.

You’re so focused on the big picture that you don’t see the stuff right under your feet that keeps tripping you up. This affects how you deal with men. You’re so fixated by Mr. Dreamy in the distance that you don’t see Mr. Right standing there in front of you. Narrow your field of vision today. You’ll be amazed at what you can see.

CANCER (June 21- July 22):

CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):

You’ve a bunch of crazy ideas in your head. What’s even crazier is that people like them, and are giving you the resources to start developing them. Jump on this excellent opportunity, and follow through on their offers. Sometimes crazy is just another word for innovative.

Money is tight, and you may find yourself shopping at secondhand stores. You’ll be queen of the discounts as you cleverly find ways to save money while maintaining a semblance of the lavish lifestyle you’re accustomed to. It will take some legwork, and snafus should be expected. So what if that cut-rate hair dryer burst into flames? It only cost five dollars.

LEO (July 23 – August 22):

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):

Today will be as chaotic as an old western town, with no rules of right and wrong, where the smallest squabble could lead to a shoot-out. You will be expected to pin on the badge, and restore order to this mess. But it’s a daunting task. Their guns are bigger than yours, and they know how to use them. It might be time to vamoose, cowboy.

You’ll be like a space-walking astronaut today, floating freely through the cosmos. The feeling of singularity and freedom will give you a Messiah Complex, and you may want to untether yourself from the mothership to be one with the universe. Don’t do that. Can you hear me, Major Tom?

VIRGO (August 23 – September 22):

PISCES (February 19 – March 19):

You feel the urge to experience something foreign today, without all the hassle of traveling. You don’t have to head to exotic places to experience the exotic, because the world is in your town. There’s bound to be plenty of foreign films, restaurants, boutiques and men right in your back yard to satisfy your sense of wanderlust.

Make yourself a good dinner today. A healthy and organic meal will do wonders for the waistline, and give you the peace of mind of knowing you won’t feel like a blimp in the morning. So rattle those pots and pans, set the table with candles and the good china and find someone to share it with.

There’s Goldilocks and The Three Leather Bears, deep-throaters on the prowl for the biggest and most hateful dicks, groupie porn star fuckers, potato queens, rice and bean queens, gym bunnies chomping on each others carrots and drag queens who indulge in an occasional kaikai. This week, let’s take a look at some folks and their Gaysian Splendor!

OMG. Really white text on a yellow background? Damn, this shit is hard to read! I just want to burn this magazine. So I ran into a couple of you queens from the Backstreet days. Remember, I was looked down on by the mean girl group because I didn’t keep up with the party scene since I was busy working and doing other things. Whew… you all have NOT aged well.
