Bigger and Harder
I
t is always incredible and awe inspiring when I meet people that have extreme willpower, who are able to focus mind, body, and soul on that singleminded goal. I recently met Brian Dohner, who returned this year from Cleveland, OH to his home in Atlanta, with not one, but two Gold Medals in Bodybuilding from the 2014 Gay Games. Competing in three previous Gay Games (Sydney, Chicago and Cologne), Brian says he enjoys the experiences and the competition. The two gold medals that Brian achieved this year were in the Over 50 Class and in the Pairs Class. The Pairs Class is very intriguing, as it is not done in any other bodybuilding competition. Competitors will have previously choreographed with a partner of their choosing to create a longer and more cohesive duet routine. “People seem to like it, especially because it’s original to the Gay Games,” Brian says. “I also want people to realize that in the regular bodybuilding competition, there are two major categories; tested and untested…I won the tested category as I have never taken performance enhancing substances.” Looking at Brian, it’s obvious that he trains hard to begin with, but I was curious as to how hard the intensity of his training was, as the competition approached. He explained that 16 weeks out he began a super carbohydrate restrictive diet and stepped up his cardio in order to get extra ripped. “It’s really hard when your friends are wanting to spend time with you and go out, but you can’t break training,” Brian explains. Aside from the dedication to the pure physicality he has achieved, I am left strongly impressed by the mental commitment that Brian has put forth. He sacrificed time, money, friends, family, probably some awesome parties – God knows how many carbs are uneaten today because he had the willpower to say no. What if we all had that kind of focus? What one thing would you focus on that hard to achieve your goals? Grad school? LGBT rights? Love? For myself, seeing that kind of dauntless devotion inspires me to dream bigger and try harder.

P
eople have been asking me to get to know Todd for a little while now. He’s been slinging cocktails in Atlanta for a good bit; eight years at Blake’s, and now a year at rising Atlanta hotspot, TEN. I was a tad off-put by his look. Todd screams EastAtlanta-hipster with not just a ring that says “Fuck You”, but also a dog-tag that bares the same mantra. Then he smiles, and your worries fade to nonexistence. This Cabagetown resident makes a mean cocktail with the friendliest of service… What’s your signature drink? It’s called a Blueberi Pie. Pretty much tastes like the name. It is made with Stoli Bluberi, of course, then I add triple sec, sprite and a touch of cranberry. Makes the kids go crazy. Who is your worst kind of customer? I really hate girls who think that just because they have a nice rack, they can get free drinks. They ask things like, “when did you know you were gay?’ “When I saw you”, is my reply. What’s the weirdest thing that you’ve been asked to do behind the bar? So this guy gets a drink from me. Then he throws up … on the bar. Then he wants to make out! What did you do? I married him! No just kidding. I probably threw him out of the bar or something. However I did get married in Boston last year to my boyfriend of ten years. Hey, ten and TEN seems like it may have been meant to happen! 10 // 09.17.2014

7 Ways to Break the Rules Wearing White After Labor Day
I
BY MIKEY ROX
’ve never been a fan of clothing etiquette wherein somebody somewhere once decided when I can wear this and when I can’t wear that. The most annoying rule of them all? No white after Labor Day. While white makes sense in the summer for practical reasons – like that it reflects the sun to keep us cool and it’s ideal for wet T-shirt contests (hey, boy!) – I think it’s perfectly fine any time of year. If you’re on my side of this debate (and you better be), check out these white-hot wardrobe additions that’ll help you stick it to tradition.
1
Timberland Polo
2
Slater Zorn Oxford Shirt

2(X)IST Briefs
Even though we’re headed into dreaded (for me, anyway) cold-weather territory, there are still a few rays of hope and sunshine to soak up before hibernation begins. You’ll come off preppy and put together on those seasonable days just following the holiday – a good look if you’re tryin’ to take a dip in the backto-school pool – in the men’s short-sleeve Millers River Polo Shirt from Timberland. This regular fit shirt – sorry, skinny bitches – is solid white for a clean, finished look. $58; shop.timberland.com
You won’t have to hem and haw when choosing a shirt from luxury retailer Slater Zorn, because every men’s button-down offered is – you guessed it – white. But these casual classics are anything but boring. There’s a pop of collegiate color on the contrast grosgrain placket that lets you bunk Labor Day tradition in white while showing a smidge of your true hues. $135; slaterzorn.com
First things first: Unless you’re the kind of guy who prefers going commando (which is just yuck, by the way), we need to slip on our skivvies. Today’s tighty whities have come a long way since our pot-bellied papas rocked the look around the house, and 2(X)IST has the perfect pair to keep your artillery under wraps. The slim-fit TUX Contour Pouch Brief features siderunning satin inset stripes and a Jacquard elastic waistband, and it’s available in stark white so you can show off what your daddy gave ya. $26; www.2xist.com

K-Way Jacket
Every dude deserves a great-fitting pair of chinos, and Bonobos is nothing if not dedicated to that pursuit. Buck the trend this time, however, with a pair of Great Whites, a stark (or is that shark?) contrast from the other blues, olives and browns that currently populate your closet. This limited-edition style – once they’re gone, they’re gone, says Bonobos – features the company’s signature back pocket liners and slide-snap closures in a straight-leg fit. $68; bonobos.com
As a loyal fan of ABC’s Shark Tank, I first learned about Mission Belt last year when entrepreneur Nate Holzapfel appeared on the show. Hoping to reinvent the belt altogether, Nate walked away with an offer from investor Daymond John – and its only fitting, then, that it’s the Great White style (hey, maybe they share a copywriter with Bonobos) that’s most appropriate here. This isn’t your ordinary belt, however. There are no holes in the design, but rather a sliding set of ‘teeth’ on the inside that allow you to adjust the leather as your body changes. Mission Belt also has another mission besides making you feel less self-conscious about your weight: $1 of every belt sold helps fight global hunger and poverty through micro lending on Kiva. $39.95; missionbelt.com
The first Monday in September unofficially signals the end of summer, and that means it’s almost time to start layering. Choosing fashionable white outerwear is no easy feat, but that all changes with Canadian company K-Way, which offers stylish jackets in a rainbow of colors, including white. Plus, you’ll be in handsome company when you step out in the Claude Klassic (or another dapper style): Celeb fans of K-Way include Josh Duhamel, Matthew Broderick, Liev Schrieber, and Ryan Reynolds. $54; k-way.ca

Modify Watch
Watches used to exist as function over fashion back in the day, but now that everyone comes out of the womb with a smartphone attached to their paws, the roles have been reserved. Thus, there’s nothing wrong with strappin’ on a timepiece like it’s 1993, and Modify Watch helps make your throwback style funky and fresh. Choose a white-on-white watch for the post Labor Day festivities, or select from more than 150 other faces that can feature your favorite sports team, show your patriotism and solidify your commitment to charity. There’s also an option to upload your own custom design. From $35; modifywatches.com
For a more local option check out Midtown fashion icon, Boy Next Door (1447 Pixaedmont Ave NE), for upcoming fall fashion trends. One of the re-invented clothing staples is the SupaWear Sports Club Sweater. Made of luxuriously soft terry cotton, this daily wear pullover has a great feature in the ribbed panels under the arm, which creates a slimming and more fitted design. It’s a great option for wearing over your gym clothes to cushion the cold before you break a sweat. davidatlanta.com // 15

Jennifer Hudson Finds Her Voice
photos: Anthony Mandler
Singer on being an elusive chanteuse, drawing strength from gays and her drag queen attitude
W
ho is Jennifer Hudson? It’s a question she knows you’ve asked – and one she’s ready to answer with JHUD, the American Idolturned-Dreamgirls sensation’s third studio album.
During our candid interview, the Oscar-winning powerhouse went back to her roots – the gay clubs – and opened up about the drag queens who inspired her fierce new outlook (“I’m 32 years old – I don’t think I need your permission”). Hudson, who also answered to those lesbian rumors and chimed in on gay marriage, isn’t kidding when she says, “I’mma be me, I’mma do me.”
By Chris Azzopardi DA: You performed “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from Dreamgirls for the gays in Chicago. What is it about that song that still gets such a reaction out of the LGBT community? JH: The song has its own spirit. It has an effect on everyone, but definitely on the gay community. I think they relate to it in a different type of way – in a special way. A lot of gay men I’ve met, they’re like, “In my heart, I am Effie.” I relate to Effie, and I think that’s part of the connection. It’s a real situation that we all go through. DA: What do you think your career would be like without the gay community?
JH: I don’t know if I would have one, to be honest. That’s why I recently did a couple of gay clubs, and I wanted to do more because that’s where I started. I was just literally looking at old pictures a few minutes ago, and I saw a picture of me David Atlanta: When you’re doing Pride events performing in a gay club and a picture of being dressed. That’s where I started, so there’s definitely a connection there. mean you gay it up? I wanted to make sure that I reconnected. Jennifer Hudson: Yes, definitely! It’s just so fun, first of all. I really enjoy myself. It’s something I really wanted to do, and yeah, DA: Having performed in gay clubs when you were you can just give it. It’s that type of audience, so you shouldn’t a teenager, you connected with the LGBT community at a very young age. What do attribute to that hold back. And I try not to, you know? relationship? learned – now, can I have a voice? Can I express myself? All of that is a part of me that is coming out through the music, so yes, you will hear songs that are old-school influenced, disco influenced, gay-anthem influenced.
DA: Speaking of Whitney Houston, before it was announced that Yaya DaCosta nabbed the role of Whitney for Lifetime’s upcoming biopic, there were rumors of you possibly playing the singer.
Throughout my career I’ve noticed people don’t have a sense of who I am as a person. They know me from being on Idol or being a spokesperson or emcee, or from film – but who is the girl? What’s her story? Through this album, I want people to get a sense of me and what that is. You’re picking up on that. “Oh, I feel a gay influence.” Yes, you do, honey, because that’s where I come from.
JH: Oh, no, no, no. Not Lifetime, no. I mean, I heard my name being tossed around for Whitney, which would obviously be an honor, but as far as that one in particular, that was never the case.
DA: As someone whose voice really takes me back to the golden era of female vocalists, how do you imagine your career would be different had you been on the radio when a real voice – a real diva voice – meant more than it does now?
JH: If it was done in the right way, for sure. I’m a fan, and I, like everyone else, want to see her remembered in the way she should be remembered. Whitney – I mean, come on, she made the hugest impact on our industry. Everybody loved Whitney. I want her to get her just, to be done the right way. She gave her whole life to this industry, so give her that.
JH: I feel like I’m stuck in the wrong time. I grew up on the Whitneys, the Pattis, the Arethas – the big voices. Today’s divas are just a completely different thing. Though they’re great as well, I still feel like I’m stuck between eras. I love The Pointer Sisters, and I also love Destiny’s Child. That’s why this album is so eclectic. I’m not a person who believes in limits. Nobody can tell me what my potential is other than myself. So (for people) to say, “You only get to do this” – no, you don’t get to tell me that.
DA: Could you see yourself playing Whitney at some point?
DA: What would be a suitable way to tribute Whitney? JH: I wanna see one tribute. I felt the same way with Michael (Jackson). There are all these amazing legends who gave their entire lives to their career, and it wasn’t light stuff – I mean, they changed the game. They changed the industry and how we look at music and performing. So much more should be done for them in their memory and to honor their work.

It makes managing a busy life just a bit easier when, with only a few key strokes, both simple and complex tasks are permanently removed from your to-do list. David Atlanta has found a few invaluable Internet sites of interest that we’re now ready to share with the rest of the class. Who isn’t guilty of using a razor blade a little longer to avoid shelling out $20 for four replacement heads? I mean, razors can be expensive, and sometimes you’d rather use that rusty relic of a razor on your wrists than to lose your desperately needed drinking money, so here’s your salvation! The Dollar Shave club (www.dollarshaveclub.com) provides monthly razor head deliveries right to your door at a fraction of drug store costs. For a monthly cost of $1, $6 or $9, you’ll receive a razor handle and a pack of your choice of razor heads. And we’re not talking single blades; Dollar Shave Club customers can choose from twin blades, four or six blade heads. So if you’re rocking the stubble to save a a few cents, sign up for Dollar Shave Club today. Nasty ingrown hairs and uncomfortable stubble are now a thing of the past. While summer is coming to a close, keep Stunner of the Month (www.stunnerofthemonth.com) in mind for your next season sunglass needs. Known simply as StunMo, their simple $9 subscription box nets you one pair of shades in a microfiber pouch, a handy keychain eyeglasses screwdriver, and a sticker. When you sign up, they’ll ask you a few questions about your personal style to get you started. And don’t worry if you don’t like the sunglasses you are sent; they have a hilarious rating system, that allows you to rate your dirt cheap sunglasses each month.
1 – Not my favorite. 2 – These’ll work. 3 – Saucier than the average plate of rice and beans. 4 – My friends are gonna be jealous. 5 – Fresh to death, how does StunMo do it! Allow StunMo’s subscription service the chance to expand your style. If you receive a pair of blue and white jetsetter frames in the mail, don’t be afraid to embrace the flossy possibilities and just because Atlanta is heading into the cooler months, doesn’t mean you have to give up all your summer style. If you’re really tired of shopping for clothing all together, Bombfell (www.bombfell.com) is your reprieve. If a bombshell is a sexy, hot lady, then bombfell proposes to make you one sexy hot fella’. Each month, Bombfell stylists make personalized proposals of stylish clothing options. Upon review, you can nix or fix items to your heart’s content. Even once you receive your box o’ fashion, you’ll have 10 days to try them on before they will charge your card. Bombfell has great relationships with some of the best menswear labels and will custom tailor not only to your personal style, but also to your personal clothing budget. Best of all, the personal stylist is free. You only pay for the clothes you keep, with free shipping both ways. There are some things that just seem wrong to buy sight unseen. Underwear would normally be at the top of that list, but not with a brand like Andrew Christian (www.andrewchristian. com). With your subscription to their Jock of the Month Club, you’ll receive a designer jockstrap, thong or fetish-style underwear mailed to your door. Designer Andrew Christian hand picks out each and every month’s selection himself. While we may not all look like a “Trophy Boy,” we certainly can be styling underwear like one.

Hot Fall Hair Trends
Stay a Cut Above the Rest
s we drift into the year’s cooler months, it’s a great excuse to change up the status quo and peek at new trends in men’s hair fashions. Chatting with True Salon Technical Director and Aveda Guest Artist, Jeffery Scott, has opened our eyes to some of falls upcoming trends in men’s hair.
Longer Hair with an Undercut Men’s hair is no longer necessarily simple, practical and short. Jeff is seeing longer, less constructed, hair on top and a return to a form of Edwardian schoolboy. This haircut allows for many variations in styling from day to day. The key is to keep that sharp undercut that will allow some of these more traditional styles to have edge.

Ways to Have Everyone Seeing Red
Atlanta Sisters Show Shades of Support for MISTER
M
aroon. Ruby. Raspberry. Crimson. No matter your shade, there’s only one spot you can show your support by sporting red and that’s the Atlanta Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence’s 3rd Annual Red Dress Party on September 20 at Amsterdam Atlanta. But this isn’t for just any red dress in your closet, this year’s theme is Masquerade en Rouge. Think old-world glamour meets Moulin Rouge as Atlanta Chapter Abbess Sister Ursula Polari and event co-chair Sister Karma Chameleon set Amsterdam’s crimson stage to travel back in time to Paris circa 1870. The Atlanta Sisters are not only raising the stakes in their red dress attire and their old-world setting, they’re also bringing the beats with an exciting and intriguing entertainment lineup. DJ Freeballin’ will keep you kicking off those heels and hiking up your dress to dance all night long while we’re excited for the burlesque and boy-lesque dancers on hand to titillate attendees. The night will be capped with a performance from up and coming pop vocalist Norwood, who recently announced that all proceeds from his empowering single “Broken” would benefit Lost N’ Found Youth.

Go traditional and storm the room in a busty blood red gown
By Joseph Brownell Already wondering what you’re going to wear? You should. This year’s event will feature some best - and possibly worst -dressed prizes in categories such as Most Creative and Most Oblivious. And don’t worry if you get there and feel outdone, there’ll be an exciting silent auction where you can pull a Cher and purchase a costume change … and knowing the Atlanta Sisters the selections will range from leather to Mary Kay. Commonly known as the color for HIV/ AIDS awareness, Red Dress Parties have served as international celebrations designed to raise awareness for LGBT community health and support services. This year’s event benefits the MISTER Center of Positive Impact in their mission of HIV/AIDS prevention and care. “MISTER is a local organization that has always had a tight relationship with the Atlanta Sisters,” explains Ursula. “The Red Dress Party was created as a way to remember those who had passed and though who remain with HIV/AIDS, which ties in very closely with MISTER services.” Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased in advance for $10. But don’t think that means you can show up without your burgundy best. Those without dresses will have to cough up $15 for admission. Get your tickets online at www.atlsisters. wix.com/atlantareddress
Take another tack and try a tasteful tuxedo Whether a cardinal tutu or crimson toga, just keep your look fresh and inventive.

The LEAGUE of Extraordinary Auctions
LEAGUE will be auctioning off handpicked, young professionals, all of which are volunteers in this anticipated bidding war. One can purchase a volunteer for the purposes of dating, networking, or maybe just a new friend. There will be a selection of gay, lesbian, straight, and bisexuals up for auction, with the bidding starting at $20. The auction volunteers were asked to pick their own dates so that they matched their own personality. For example, one of the volunteers, Jewel, will be taking her date to a concert. There will be opportunities to do yoga, see a play or concert, hiking, dinner, etc.
Event coordinators are really excited to have Justin Mullinix of Stokeswood as one of ally volunteers. “This is the first ‘Date for a Cause’ event, explains Director of Communications, Dione Postway. “I became involved with LEAGUE of AT&T earlier this year, and eventually joined the Events Committee. They were looking for new networking and fundraising opportunities for our members to attend…[and] when they asked for any ideas, it was silent for a few minutes. Me, being the type of person who is uncomfortable with silence during meetings, said ‘how about a date auction?’…to my surprise, they loved the idea. With the support of a very involved group of board and committee members, ‘Date for a Cause’ was born…I was astonished by how many people wanted to come out and support the event.” 30 // 09.17.2014
Lost-n-Found Board Member, Arthur Izzard, suggested another way to give back, if you are not comfortable bidding on a date, is to provide gift cards to popular restaurants or supermarkets. If a hungry youth comes in, they can grab a gift card to Publix, Subway, McDonald’s, etc. Lost-n-Found prefers healthy and convenient choices if possible. There will be a bowl at the event for attendees to drop off gift cards if they like. So grab your checkbooks guys and girls, and get ready to duke it out with fellow bidders, for your chance to win a date with a wonderful young professional and donate to a worthy cause that is making a difference in the world around us.

This Week in Theaters The Guest: Stalker thrillers are creeping into theaters this fall. A great way to kick off the trend is with The Guest, starring former Downton Abbey actor, Dan Stevens. They’ll be “Crawley” all over him as Dan Steven has toned up and now shows off his bod. In this new thriller in which a soldier introduces himself to the Peterson family, claiming to be a friend of their son who died in action. After the young man is welcomed into their home, a series of accidental deaths seem to be connected to his presence. Tracks: Based upon a true story, Mia Wasikowska portrays introverted Robyn Davidson, who decides to leave her life in the city for a 2,000-mile journey across the sprawling Australian desert. Joined only by her dog and four obstinate and unpredictable camels, she sets out on a true journey of self-discovery and adventure.

fairyscopes ARIES (March 20 – April 19):
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22):
Weariness may have you feeling a bit listless this week and you’re likely to want to stay home in bed rather than go anywhere. This goes against your normal inclination, so you could be tempted to bite the bullet and get out. Don’t fall into this trap. Get some rest so that when you absolutely have to go out, you’ll be your old self again.
Your mind may be going a thousand miles an hour. You might be inundated with new ideas and information that could cause mental overload. Write it all down if you can. You’ll want to refer to it later. It might be advisable to then go out for a walk or other exercise. This intellectual overload could produce excess nervous energy that you’ll need to work off.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20):
SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21):
A lover or close friend may seem to have dropped out of the picture, and this could have you worried and wondering if this person isn’t interested in continuing a relationship. Don’t let your insecurity get the best of you. The person has his or her troubles and will eventually want a strong, sympathetic shoulder to cry on. You’re likely to be that person!
Worries over the situation of a lover or close friend who seems depressed could plague you this week, yet you may hesitate to contact this person and ask what’s wrong because you don’t want to intrude. Nonetheless, you should. Your concern will be appreciated. Tonight get some muchneeded rest. You’ve been working far too hard.
GEMINI (May 21- June 20):
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20):
Career interests may be short-circuited by gossip, rumor, and office politics. Someone has an agenda and isn’t likely to care too much about the effect on others’ lives of any underhanded dealings. If you hear about such goings-on do what you can to stop them before they get out of hand. That way you can protect your and your colleagues’ career interests.
A family member may be depressed and not up for talking about what’s wrong. Their mood could spread to everyone else, so it might be a good idea to ask what’s wrong. Point out that moods are contagious! Don’t force the issue, Sagittarius. That would be worse.
CANCER (June 21- July 22):
CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):
Perhaps you’ve been planning a trip or a return to school for a long time. However, Cancer, a rather disturbing letter or phone call could jeopardize your plans and leave you teetering on the edge of disappointment. If you look at the situation carefully, you may find that it doesn’t set you back that much. You can take care of it without sacrificing what you want.
Misinformation might spread through your extended family or neighborhood and cause unnecessary upsets. Don’t accept at face value any gossip or rumor you hear today until you check it out yourself, Capricorn. It could turn out to be a tempest in a teapot. This isn’t a good time to plan or take a trip of any kind. Delays or mishaps could result.
LEO (July 23 – August 22):
AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):
Seemingly bad news about your financial situation could throw your usually even-keeled nature off kilter. Look into the matter carefully before panicking. There may have been a computer error or perhaps someone confused you with someone else. Take steps to rectify the blunder. You’ll be relieved to know that all was better than it seemed.
Misinformation regarding money could come from someone who has a stake in your believing whatever you’re told. This could be a banker, creditor, investment counselor, or even a close friend. Whoever it is don’t accept what this person says at face value. Look into the facts of the situation before making any decisions about what you need to do.
VIRGO (August 23 – September 22):
PISCES (February 19 – March 19):
An unpleasant situation could arise. Your first reaction may be to protect those closest to you from the truth. You could be tempted to lie or at least avoid mentioning the situation. Your desire to shield loved ones is understandable, but it could cause problems. You can’t protect people from everything. Most people prefer to know the facts.
Someone close to you may not be totally honest. This person could be avoiding telling the truth or hiding something from you in order to protect you. If someone tells you something important that doesn’t ring true, check it out before accepting one’s word. This isn’t a vicious deception - only a protective one. But shielding someone from the truth can sometimes backfire!
