1. It’s Better to be Happy than Right Most of the fights that occur between couples are when someone wants to be right and prove that the other person is wrong. Whether you’re right or wrong in the situation, nobody wins because you’re both losing. 2. Being Passive-Aggressive Isn’t any Better When you’re constantly dropping hints showing that you’re angry at your significant other, you’re not doing anything different than initiating an argument. This can actually make someone more upset than when you confront them personally. 3. Taking Your Emotions out on Them We all get into a funk or have our own bad days, but this doesn’t mean that your significant other should be your punching bag. It can destroy a relationship if every time you have a bad day you take it out on your significant other when they had nothing to do with the reason why you’re upset. 4. Getting Jealous You need to have faith that your significant other only has eyes for you. Whether they take a look at someone else or someone else is checking them out, this is no reason to start a fight. We’re all human, so this will happen. You need to remember who they’re going home with.

I

t’s a common misconception that every couple fights, so we don’t need to work on our problems because we have a normal relationship. The truth is that when we fight, it is toxic to our relationships and causes resentments to build up and unnecessary drama that could be resolved from learning how to fight fair. Conflicts are an inevitable facet of relationships that can become magnified. In a relationship, we need to feel comfortable, supported, and understood by the person with whom we are most intimate in the world. When our expectations of these needs are not met, conflict can begin to bubble. Undercutting your spouse with a cheap and petty trick designed specifically to hit a weak point only you can know doesn’t win you the argument; it loses you your relationship. Conflicts in relationship run deeper than just a simple disagreement. The grooves of your character are as familiar to your spouse as any part of your physical appearance. When these grooves grate against each other, strong emotions can be triggered and fester if untended. Taking a proactive, positive, and honest approach to conflict resolution will result in an opportunity to strengthen your relationship, to improve the feeling of security and trust leaving it stronger than it was before. Dismissive behavior is one of the most psychologically damaging behaviors for one person to another. Acknowledge, listen, and put yourself in their shoes for a minute. Conflict in relationships is more than a simple misunderstanding or disagreement especially when you or your partner perceives a threat. Threats trigger strong emotional reactions and maintaining a level playing field is critical to relationship success. Here are 8 reasons why fighting can toxic to your relationship: 20 | 9.9.15

5. Attacking the Person This is who you’ve committed yourself to and want to be with, so you should make them feel special not terrible. When you get into a fight and attack them for who they are as a person or their physical insecurities, you’re no longer fighting other than trying to put the person down. 6. Bringing up the Past If you want to be in a healthy relationship, you can’t hold the person’s past against them. We all have things we’ve done in the past that we’re not proud of, but we take those situations and learn how to grow from them. If you’re constantly bringing up the person’s past, you’re bringing up bad memories for them while telling them that you don’t trust them as well. 7. Waiting for the Right Time to Explode A common toxic maneuver that people in relationships use is when they don’t start a fight right away, but they hold onto a situation to use it at a later time. Doing this doesn’t help anyone. You either discuss the situation right when it happens or get over it. 8. Letting Your Friends get Involved Don’t allow others to get involved in your relationship fights. You don’t win just because your friends agree with you. Your fight is between you and your significant other and it should stay that way.

MUSIC G U I D E

JEWEL, PICKING UP THE PIECES

After spending much of the 21st century skipping between musical genres, Jewel returns to her roots for her latest project. Jewel produced the album on her own, and referred to it as a bookend to her 1995 breakthrough, Pieces of You. Available Sept. 11

LANA DEL REY, HONEYMOON

For her third full-length album, Lana Del Rey describes her work as “surrealist” and inspired by “late-night Miles Davis drives.” Whatever she’s doing, it must be working: lead single “High By the Beach” debuted in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, only her second song to go so high (after “Summertime Sadness”). Available Sept. 18

SELENA GOMEZ, REVIVAL

With her current single, “Good for You,” Selena Gomez is scrubbing off the last remnants of her Disney days. Expect more of this on Revival, Gomez’ first album after leaving her previous record label, the Disney-owned Hollywood Records. Available Oct. 9

DEMI LOVATO, CONFIDENT

If Selena’s scrubbing off Disney, Demi’s going out of her way to completely distance herself from those early Disney days. As lead single “Cool for the Summer” shows, Demi’s dabbling in some Sapphic love and flaunting her body for all the girls and boys. Available Oct. 16

ADELE, 26

We’re taking a guess with the title, since the originally rumored title of 25 would’ve worked better a year ago. In any case, we don’t know much about Adele’s next album, but her record label has confirmed to Billboard that it’s coming this November. Available TBD

JUSTIN BIEBER, TBA

Canada’s most prominent Kate Gosselin doppelganger has been making a musical comeback in recent months, first with his Skrillex/Diplo collaboration “Where Are U Now?” and now with the lead single from his next album, “What Do You Mean?” The full album’s coming at some point this fall, likely in October. Available TBD

RIHANNA, TBA

Remember when Rihanna was releasing new music every November like clockwork? It’s been nearly three whole years since she released her last album, Unapologetic, and while she released a handful of singles earlier this year, we’re not sure DISCLOSURE, CARACAL These dance producers blew up big-time when their single with when to expect Rihanna’s eighth album. an favorite DJ Diablo Rojo is back again for another memorable evening at the Georgia Aquarium’s Official Pride Kickoff Party! Rojo will be featuring his signature “visual” sound throughout the night, a style he has become known for over the last decade. The ManShaft founder took the time to discuss the early days of his career, his legendary, unique style of spinning and what he has in store for the biggest LGBT event of the year! David Atlanta: How did you get started in the business?

Diablo Rojo:I have avidly collected music, attended concerts, managed a record store, and worked closely with labels promoting artists from high school through college. My first public gig was at Mary’s in East Atlanta Village and I’ve been playing and hosting events there for over a decade. Also, I am in advertising so naturally I concept, design, shoot, promote, and DJ my events down to the very last details.

a familiar crowd that understands your point-of-view and where you are taking them with your set. I am all about making sure that people have a great experience and find it very rewarding to bring people together. DA: How would you describe your style? DR: My sound is continually evolving; particularly the ManShaft sets at The Heretic. I’ve been crafting a sound laced with dirty, sticky downbeats that builds to a harder electro sound. I also like to throw in a backlash of reworked rock classics to keep the crowd guessing. Eclectic, yes, but it works quite successfully with this particular event and crowd. I enjoy finding more commercial or classic songs that have been reinterpreted by other DJ’s or touched up with my own light production. If I am mixing for myself, it’s more low-fi alternative sound which you can hear at SoundCloud: https://soundcloud. com/djdiablorojo/diablos-toolbox-part-1 Otherwise, I do not publish event sets, so come out and enjoy them in person.

DR: It’s an honor being invited back for a second year and a great opportunity to create a new “soundtrack” for this special event. Last year’s set spanned four decades of gay culture through music video. This year I plan to incorporate more emerging artists like Disclosure, Breach, and Duke Dumont. These artists have rich, house music meets electronic music hybrid sounds. I’ve been thoughtfully crafting combinations of classics vs. contemporary artists to assure it’s an upbeat and engaging experience. I hope everyone enjoys the Pride Kick Off Party in the Oceans Ballroom at the Georgia Aquarium on October 9th. Expect a concert scale video screen installation for my VJ set against an over the top room theme, which I cannot disclose, that will be talked about for weeks after the event! It’s going to be another amazing production by John Walker and team at the Georgia Aquarium. Don’t miss out! This special event sells out every year! DA: Do you have anything big coming down the pipe for us within the next year? DR: In November 2015, the Manshaft: Levi-Leather Edition returns to Heretic. The event is scheduled quarterly in 2016 with the ManShaft: Lumberjack Edition in March. Also gigs are planned at smaller venues, like the Ginger Appreciation Party (aka. Red Meat Party) at Mary’s in East Atlanta in January with other events to follow. I will also explore opportunities collaborating with other local DJ’s and more out-of-town or even abroad events. So, let’s stay in touch, search “DJ Diablo Rojo” on Facebook, “Like” the page, and stay informed for what’s to come in 2016!

perspectives to LGBT storytelling. I’ve always been drawn to writing gay characters. When I first started out, I just wanted to finish something and put it online. I had no idea what it would become. I shot the first two episodes for literally no money. I self-financed the first two episodes. I want to say I spent, $1,500. Everybody involved pretty much volunteered his or her time and talent. It was so just overwhelmingly affirming that everybody wanted to be a part of it. I think that people maybe responded to that energy, that everybody was involved with it for the right reasons. enowned Broadway actor, writer and director Kit Williamson is on top of the world these days. The uber-talented thesp said goodbye to Mad Men and its final season, got engaged to his long-time partner and is gearing up to launch the second season of his popular web series Eastsiders. While visiting his hometown in Mississippi, Kit took the time to discuss his whirlwind year and the endless possibilities for the future. David Atlanta: Where did the idea for the show originate? Kit Williamson: I really wanted to tell a story with complicated, flawed and fucked up gay characters. I feel like too often we see a squeaky-clean representation of gay people, and as a fundamentally messed up person, I just don’t identify with it. I wanted to dig into those characters and just have it be a lucky coincidence that they were all gay and in a gay neighborhood. I lived in Silver Lake for many years with my fiancé John. I’d also

It’s definitely amazing to see that there is an audience for it and to prove that there is an audience for it. I think that that’s what the Kickstarter campaign did.

DA: What was that transition like — I know you had a theater background — from going from theater to screen and then to this web style never really seen that neighborhood and, of shooting? Ready 4 Hope is Ready 2 Help by Jeffery Silvey

L

ately the LGBTQ community has been flooded with positive changes and support. From the Supreme Court marriage victory, to fighting against a Kentucky court clerk, to Miley Cyrus’s army of drag queen back-up dancers, the LGBTQ community has remained at the forefront of the social conscious as a clear indication of just how far we’ve all come. And yet we still have so much farther to go. Although gay couples can now plan their weddings and be seen on tv, we still have yet to eradicate AIDS. There are now treatments, preventative medications, and real quality of life for people living with AIDS and HIV where as the diagnosis used to be synonymous with a death sentence. It’s all real progress but there is still work to be done: enter Ready 4 Hope, an all volunteer nonprofit organization. . Born out of the fundraising efforts of the AIDS walk, a group of volunteers gathered in 2013 to plan various social events to raise money for AID Atlanta. Mike Woodside, one of the volunteers, has walked the AIDS walk since 2002 and managed to raise $16,000 in 2012. That hefty amount 42 | 9.9.15

Autumn Heat White Party Week by Jason Mietelski

T

he Circuit Party lives on through one of its oldest organized events: the Miami White Party. Having begun to wane in popularity and attendance in the 2000s as a result of the aging gay male population that brought the all-night parties into existence, greater awareness and better treatments of HIV/AIDS, all gay cruises and resorts, and digital social networking abilities, Circuit Parties are making a comeback again.

Muscle Beach Party, the sexiest dance party on the sand, featuring DJs Eddie Martinez and Phil B. on 11/29 from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. @ Miami/12th Street Beach. ($90+)

White Dreams, featuring DJ Joe Gauthreaux, takes place on 11/27 at Club Space, 34 NE 11th ST, takes you to another world from 10 p.m. until 8 a.m. ($65+)

The original Miami White Party was held in 1985—it was a night of dancing, drinking, sex and decadent excess, but also an opportunity for gay men to support one another during the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis. More than 1600 guests attended, each paying a ten dollar cover which went to support HIV/AIDS research and treatment. And today the only difference is that the party spans a week (November 26-30), featuring top DJs from around the world, and multiple venues to tantalize all five of your senses. Proceeds in 2015 will benefit Care Resource (www.careresource.org), a non-profit organization that developed during the beginning of the AIDS epidemic 30 years ago and provides its clients access to medical care, clinical trials, counseling, home-delivered meals, transportation and a food bank.

Noche Blanca featuring DJ Abel runs from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. on 11/29 @ Story Nightclub, 136 Collins Ave. ($65+)

White Journey, the signature kick-off dance event featuring DJ Manny Lehman, takes off at 11 p.m. @ Bekkoi Nightclub, 50 NE 11th ST, and carries you through the night until 8 a.m. ($15 online, $30 at the door)

White Starz will host over 1,000 of the hottest guys around on 11/28 @ Score Nightclub, 1437 Washington AVE, from 10 a.m. until 5 a.m. showcasing the talents of DJs Paulo, Isaac Escalante, and Dawson ($65+)

White Heat @ Ballo Nightclub, 7020 NW 72nd AVE, features DJ Otto spinning from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. on 11/25. ($10)

The main event—The White Party—will be held on Saturday, November 28th from 6 p.m. until 12 a.m. aboard the newest, largest, most elegant yacht in Florida: The Grand Floridian Mega Yacht. DJ Roland Belmares will be whipping you off your feet as you set sail through Miami’s gorgeous waterways and take in its breathtaking skyline, dancing with sexy men from around the globe for a great cause. General admission is $160 and includes hors d’oeuvres and an open bar. Attendees must be over 21 and produce a valid ID to participate.

Yes, there are a wide range of things to do during White Party Week with scores of men to do them with—all fitting different budgets and tastes—but most importantly, giving you the opportunity to have the time of your life and benefit the LGBT community at large! So book your hotel rooms now! See you in Miami!

It seems the future favors foreskins. If you’re willing to hang on to your overhang and overlook those fickle fellows, CLIP, society will eventually catch up with you and your all-natural penis. Dear Dom, My wardrobe needs something fresh. Hats for men seem to be back in style. What types do you like best? Dude Undertaking New Clothing Experiences

Dear Dom,

Every Single Question... Every Single Answer Dear Dom,

DUNCE, cap and hat styles for men change with the decades. Years ago they were required accessories. Excepting baseball caps, hats on most guys these days look rather ridiculous. And just try to find a hat rack when you need one. Here’s a fast list of trendy toppers for fashionable fops. Cowboy Hat: If you’re not heading to a hoe-down or square dance class, this wide-brimmed choice should be reserved for real wranglers. A cowboy hat is best worn with genuine cowboy boots. Better still if they’re caked with actual cow shit. Fedora: Are you a police detective? Are you playing in a local theatre revival of “Guys and Dolls”? No? Then leave this 40’s fashion throwback to those clubby boys who just can’t resist looking stupid for style. Flat Cap: Often of tweed, this slouch-fronted number was the selection of newsboys during the early 1900s. Wear this, ride your bicycle, and fling the daily AJC onto your neighbor’s porches. Buy this cap in leather only if you’ve got tickets to an AC/DC concert.

Bucket Hat: Unless you’re a young hip-hop recording artist, Should I get circumcised? Your enthusiasm for a new day will last only as long as your morning caffeine buzz. Better do something to get your energy levels up. A lunchtime workout could be the fix. Exercising will have you sweating bullets, while the eye candy will get your blood boiling.

The frenetic pace of hyper people won’t be to your liking today. You’ll prefer a slow ramp-up to a blastoff. So let them zoom right by you. They’ll crash by lunchtime while you plod right past them, getting things done.

Your moods will be fiery today, and the slightest spark could make them go kaboom. But setting off fireworks also puts you at the center of attention, never good when you’re in the middle of a hissy fit. That’s a display no one will be cheering, so put a lid on the drama today.

Opening your big yapper could land you in a hot water today. So formulate sentences in your head and analyze them before delivery. It may take you longer to say things, but that will be best for everyone today, yourself included.

Be your own man today, and don’t let anyone shape your opinions. Stick to your guns, as people will be persuasive. But you’ll still buy a ticket for the Rufus Wainright show because it’s expected of you, and because you never get enough of a guy singing the Judy Garland songbook.

Be willing to do what’s necessary to climb that ladder today. That may mean being cruel and bitchy, although people may not notice a difference. Be hard-boiled, but don’t surrender to the dark side. Resorting to dirty tricks and subversive actions is too low to stoop in the name of ambition. 66 | 9.9.15

A gathering heat in your head may be causing storm clouds to hover above. Your irritability will be intimidating to people, and the constant lightning strikes to your head will eventually need some moisturizing. Best lighten up before the rains start. A bad hair day won’t make you feel any better.

Perhaps the clothes felt a little tight this past weekend. Maybe you were feeling less than sexy. Take your bruised ego back to the gym for some retooling. Be consistent and eat sensibly and your return to splendor and a 30-inch waist should only take a couple of weeks.

You’ll project a masculine energy today that will have all eyes on you. You may not even be aware of the effect you’ll have on guys, as even the nonsmokers rush out to buy Marlboros. But stay humble and slightly naive today. A slight hint of innocence will drive them even crazier!

Postpone any social engagements you may have today. A rough day at work will dampen your enthusiasm for being outgoing and bon vivant. And no one wants to be around a sullen recluse who speaks in grunts. So delay going out until later in the week when you’ll feel the love.

You may discover a dirty little secret about someone you don’t like today. Spreading this news discreetly through the general population will give you the upper hand in your tenuous relationship with this person. But take the high road and keep it to yourself, no matter how tempting it may be.

You’ll feel as if you’re lost in a haze today. That won’t be a good place to be as the day swings into high gear. Better drink plenty of coffee to get you up to speed. But even that may not help, so you had best learn to fake it and hope no one notices.

Bitch

S E S S I O N There’s nothing more unattractive than a guy who doesn’t know the difference between there, their and they’re or your and you’re. I know you love your cigarettes but how about you consider a breath mint before you stick that ashtray in my face.

You say I’m out to get you. It’s worse for you than that: I wasn’t thinking about you at all.

You act like God’s Gift, when in fact you are his punishment for what a rude whore I was in college.

I #can’t with these basic bitches bitching about how basic “pumpkin anything” is. You’re so basic. Quit hating. Damn.

I own up to what I did, but do you really want me relaying to your new boyfriend the part you played in it?

Girl move on. I forgot you like last year’s fashions, which you are still wearing by the way.

If you’re gonna talk about me, at least be smart enough not to do it to my best friend. I got texted all about it before you were home from the bar, bitch.

Spotted a cyclist using the sidewalk next to the bike lane on 10th street today, bastard. Smh!

Hey gays! Quit putting yourself in a category! Break out of the mold!
