RESET WITH DJ DEANNE

LGBT ALLIES FOR HILLARY

PALS DISCO BINGO

This spin doctor knows what you need, and you’re going to get it. Come see what traveling circuit DJ Deanne prescribes for a September Saturday night that says, ‘Hey, girl! Labor Day is over, fall is practically here, and we need to dance about it. Hard.’

With Election Day looming ever closer, and the fervor of the race heating ever hotter, Hillary Clinton’s strongest LGBT Atlanta supporters come together to give the campaign another push at this gay-owned, gay-popular restaurant destination. Food and cocktails, of course.

This age-old local gay favorite event only comes around once a quarter now, so get in on it. As always, the costume themed party, the drag hosts and the calling of the balls all benefit one thing: the beloved programs of Pets Are Loving Support and their ongoing mission for pets.

Here are the movies, TV and music about to deluge their gays and quench the long summer drought in entertainment.

E

ven before you pack away your shorts and deflate your pool floats, Hollywood swoops in to save you from the summer doldrums just as you were running out of binge-worthy entertainment, alsoran singers, and B Movies. David is all about it. We take a deep dive into fall to present these, the movies, TV and music that everyone will be talking about as the Gays of 2016 sprint into the year’s final furlong.

THE ACCOUNTANT

Falling into Film Let’s be honest. Summer’s slate of films didn’t prove super exciting. Fortunately, fall offers more potential. From fantasy films to Oscar bait, here are ten of the season’s most promising. The Accountant Ben Affleck stars as Christian Wolff, a mathematics savant who works as a forensic accountant for criminal organizations. When a Treasury agent (J.K. Simmons) begins to pursue him, Christian takes on a legitimate client, but as he begins to investigate a multimillion-dollar discrepancy, bodies begin to pile up. Opens nationwide Oct. 14 Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk The latest film from Oscar-winning director Ang Lee centers around Billy Lynn (Joe Alwyn), a member of the Bravo Squad in Iraq. After surviving a brutal fight, Lynn and other survivors of the skirmish return to the U.S. as war heroes. The government sends them on a “Victory Tour” to promote support for the war. Then comes the news that the soldiers have not been relieved of their duty and, following the tour, they are set to return to Iraq. Opens nationwide Nov. 11 Desierto The new thriller from Jonás Cuarón (Gravity) follows a group of Mexican migrant workers who are looking for a better life as they plan to cross the U.S. border. The men and women suddenly find themselves in a fight to stay alive when a vigilante with a rifle begins to chase them across the desert. Opens nationwide Oct. 14

DOCTOR STRANGE

Doctor Strange The Marvel Cinematic Universe goes into some new dimensions with their latest film. When Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), the world’s top neurosurgeon, is injured in a car accident, his career is ruined. He sets out on a journey of healing, where he encounters the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), who begins to train him in the mystic arts. Opens nationwide Nov. 4 davidatlanta.com | 19

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them J.K. Rowling turns to screenwriting for the first time with the first film in a spinoff trilogy to the Harry Potter series. Back in 1926, Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) arrives at the Magical Congress of the United States of America for an important meeting. With him is a briefcase that contains a number of dangerous creatures. When the creatures escape, Newt is pursued by the American wizards. Opens nationwide Nov. 18

FANTASTIC BEASTS

THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN

The Girl on the Train Looking for a good literary adaptation in the vein of Gone Girl? Look no further. Rachel Watson (Emily Blunt), an alcoholic divorcée, takes the train to work every day. During her commute, she fantasizes about a young couple that lives down the street from her exhusband (Justin Theroux). One morning, though, she sees something shocking and finds herself involved in a mystery that will change the lives of everyone involved. Opens nationwide Oct. 7 Loving In 1958, Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred Loving (Ruth Negga) were arrested and sentenced to prison in Virginia because their marriage violated Virginia’s anti-miscegenation laws. After leaving Virginia for Washington, DC, the couple sued the state, eventually leading to the landmark Supreme Court case of Loving v. Virginia. Opens nationwide Nov. 4 Manchester by the Sea Anyone who follows the Oscar race should have this film on their radar. After his brother suddenly dies, Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is made the legal guardian of his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Lee returns to his hometown, where he’s forced to come to terms with both his ex-wife Randi (Michelle Williams) and the community at large. Opens in limited release Nov. 18

MOANA

NOCTURNAL ANIMALS 20 | 9.7.16

Moana The directors of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, two of Disney’s biggest musicals, are teaming up with Lin-Manuel Miranda, the man behind the biggest Broadway musical in years – Hamilton – for their latest adventure. Set in the South Pacific, Moana follows a young girl named Moana (Auli’i Cravalho), a young navigator who sets sail for an ancient island with the help of her hero, the demi-god Maui (Dwayne Johnson). Opens nationwide Nov. 23 Nocturnal Animals Out fashion designer Tom Ford, who made a splash with his directorial debut A Single Man back in 2009, finally follows that film up with this adaptation of the book Tony and Susan. Susan Morrow (Amy Adams) is haunted by a novel her ex-husband has written, which she interprets as a veiled threat of revenge. Opens nationwide Nov. 18

THE GOOD PLACE

DIVORCE

WESTWORLD

ONE MISSISSIPPI

Must-See Fall TV With the rise of cable and streaming services that drop entire seasons throughout the year, it’s easy to forget how many shows still premiere every fall. Check out ten of the ones we’re most looking forward to watching. Atlanta Donald Glover, best known from his time on Community (or as rapper Childish Gambino) goes in a new creative direction with this half-hour series he created. Glover plays a young man looking for direction as he manages his up-and-coming rapper cousin. Premiered Tuesday, Sept. 6 on FX Better Things Fans of Louie will want to tune into this autobiographical dramedy from Louis C.K. and his frequent collaborator, Pamela Adlon. Adlon plays a divorced actress with a higher priority on her three daughters than her career. Premieres Thursday, Sept. 8 on FX Divorce Sarah Jessica Parker returns to HBO in this dark comedy focusing on the crumbling relationship between Frances (Parker) and Robert (Thomas Haden Church). Premieres Sunday, Oct. 9 on HBO Goliath Creator David E. Kelley – The Practice, Ally McBeal, Boston Legal, Harry’s Law – is back with his first off-network series. It stars Billy Bob Thornton as a disgraced lawyer with a chance for redemption and revenge against his former firm. Premieres Friday, Oct. 14 on Amazon The Good Place From the co-creator of Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine comes a serialized comedy starring Kristen Bell as a woman who dies and ends up in what’s called “the good place” but knows there’s been a mix-up. Premieres Monday, Sept. 19 on NBC 22 | 9.7.16

MARVEL'S LUKE CAGE

Insecure From Issa Rae of Awkward Black Girl, and Larry Wilmore comes this series based on that web series about the awkward experiences of being a black woman in today’s world. The show also explores a friendship between two women in very different places in their lives. Premieres Sunday, Oct. 9 on HBO Marvel’s Luke Cage Audiences first got a look at Luke Cage when star Mike Colter was a major co-star in Marvel’s Jessica Jones. Here’s his own series as the man with super strength and unbreakable skin, confronting the villain Cottonmouth (House of Cards alum Mahershala Ali). Premieres Friday, Sept. 30 on Netflix One Mississippi Another autobiographical series involving Louis C.K., this one comes from out comedian Tig Notaro and focuses on her move home to Mississippi after her mother’s sudden death. It costars Casey Wilson of Happy Endings. Premieres Friday, Sept. 9 on Amazon Pitch Major League Baseball hits fall with more than just games. Pitch focuses on Ginny Baker (Kylie Bunbury), a young female pitcher who becomes the first woman to play on an MLB team. Premieres Thursday, Sept. 22 on FOX Westworld HBO’s massive new drama based on the book by Michael Crichton comes from Jonathan Nolan (brother of Christopher Nolan) and executive producer J.J. Abrams. Welcome to a Western-themed amusement park where the robot employees begin to glitch. The cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden and Jeffrey Wright. Premieres Sunday, Oct. 2 on HBO

Fall’s Musical Notes Beyoncé served us all her Lemonade. Rihanna finally released an album for the first time in over three years. Kanye West couldn’t stop making changes to The Life of Pablo, and Frank Ocean dropped not one, but two albums within a day of each other. So what else is there to look forward to this year? Here’s your answer. Against Me! – Shape Shift with Me With their last album, Transgender Dysphoria Blues, Against Me! provided a landmark moment for trans visibility. Frontwoman Laura Jane Grace’s gender identity remains at the center of the follow-up. Available Sept. 16 Childish Gambino – PHAROS There’s no official release date for Childish Gambino’s official follow-up to Because the Internet, but that’s not stopped the release from turning into an event. The new album will unveil as part of a three-day multimedia event with its own app, art installations and performances. Release date TBA Green Day – Revolution Radio Lead single “Bang Bang,” written from the point of view of a mass shooter, promises that the band is returning to the political area they previously explored all the way back on American Idiot. Available Oct. 7 Idina Menzel – Idina. Kristin Chenoweth – The Art of Elegance Both Wicked co-stars release new albums the same day. It’s not the collaboration that fans who wore out that soundtrack wants, but you know both artists will provide plenty of high points. Available Sept. 23

JoJo – Mad Love After nearly a decade of issues with her former label, the 25-year-old singer behind mid-2000s hits “Leave (Get Out)” and “Too Little Too Late” finally drops her third solo album. The lead single “Fuck Apologies,” featuring Wiz Khalifa, is already out. Available Oct. 14 Lady Gaga – TBA All we know about this highly anticipated album is that the lead single, “Perfect Illusion,” drops this month. That it’s an upbeat dance song with production by Mark Ronson, Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker and BloodPop is enough to pique our interest. Release date TBA M.I.A. – A.I.M. Eight years after “Paper Planes” dominated radio, she’s back with what she claims is her last album. It includes collaborations with Skrillex and ex-boyfriend/former frequent collaborator Diplo. Available Sept. 16 Mykki Blanco – Mykki Rapper. Poet. Performance artist. Activist. The thought-provoking hip-hop artist frequently noted as a queer pioneer in Hip Hop follows a series of mixtapes and singles with this fulllength solo debut. Available Sept. 18 Regina Spektor – Remember Us to Life In the years since 2012’s What We Saw from the Cheap Seats, she’s largely known as the Orange is the New Black theme song singer. As the first samples from the album show, though, there’s a lot more to this eccentric artist than that one song. Available Sept. 30 Tove Lo – Lady Wood She broke through with Queen of the Clouds and hits like “Habits (Stay High)” and “Talking Body.” This album is led by single “Cool Girl,” which draws inspiration from the infamous monologue from the book and film Gone Girl. Release date TBA

Destroying Stigma With A Smile by James Parker Sheffield

TEAM FRIENDLY, FUN-LOVING ADVOCATES BEHIND A UNIQUE SMILING FACE LOGO, ARE ON THE SCENE WITH AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE YOU NEED TO HEAR.

F

or decades, advocates in the world of HIV education and prevention have battled deep-rooted stigma. It makes encouraging people to get tested an uphill battle, while also creating an environment of fear and shame for those living with HIV.

The lighthearted smiling face of Mr. Friendly, which includes a positive and negative sign in the design to show a neutral position between statuses, had such an appeal that it quickly became an official element of the HIV/AIDS service organization Wyatt works for. Today, Mr. Friendly is the face of an international anti-stigma movement, and Team Friendly chapters now span across the U.S., including the active Atlanta guys of Team Friendly Georgia.

This past June marked the 35th anniversary of AIDS, yet unfounded perceptions about HIV remains a pervasive obstacle in fighting new infections and ending HIV discrimination everywhere from the workplace to the bedroom. The local chapter got it’s start by hitting the local bar scene and community events Enter Dave Wyatt, HIV prevention spe- equipped with education, prevention cialist and creative guy looking to create tools, and fun-loving personalities on a mission to create a more welcoming world change. for people living with HIV. In 2009, Wyatt incorporated a strong anti-stigma message in his run for Mr. Like Wyatt, many of TFG members have Michigan Leather. His “we’re all in this longstanding ties to the leather commutogether” approach to creating a world nity. As with anything the ATL leather in which HIV status, whether positive or community touches, their efforts have negative, is viewed as completely neutral been tremendously successful. The group resonated, and it was propelled by a sim- expanded from Atlanta to cover the entire ple, powerful logo dubbed “Mr. Friendly.” state earlier this year, and it’s already 28 | 9.7.16

been spotted spreading the gospel of positive views on positive status at events far outside the perimeter, like Augusta Pride. Now HIV stigma has no place to hide in Georgia. Some leather & Levi-clad superheroes are on their way to an event near you, armed with an important message, cute t-shirts and... Never mind. If enough of them are wearing leather & Levi’s, I shouldn’t have to keep listing reasons to pay attention. When message and look are both on point, just say “Yes, Sir” and start listening. You can find TFG at bar nights and Pride events, as Funds raised help stamp out stigma statewide. well as working with HIV/ AIDS service providers around the state. Also, if you say, “Stamp out stigma statewide” five times really fast, you automatically win a date. Never hurts to try, right? Meet Team Friendly on Sept. 11, from 3 p.m.-7 p.m., at Woofs, 2425 Piedmont Road NE. Can’t make it? Contact TeamFriendlyGA@gmail.com to get involved, and visit mrfriendly.org to learn more about the Team Friendly movement.

profile. If he really believes these awful things about you, why is he still with you? He says he loves you, but what you describe is selfish obsession with someone he’s trying to control.

HEY,

Daddy!

Whether it’s because of his cheating ex, or because he subconsciously feeds on the drama, you have to deal with his behavior as is. You’ve got your own problems to solve, and he’s at the root of them. Before your silence is taken as consent and it escalates further, stop making excuses and cut him loose. Hey, Daddy!

My mother’s racist, homophobic boyfriend won’t die, and I can’t get her to break up with him. Now they’re coming to Atlanta to see me and my (non-white) husband. found out he set up a fake account I love my mom and want to see Hey, Daddy! to see “what we were really up her, but how do I tell her not to My boyfriend of about a year treats to.” He really is great in so many bring him? me well, is conscientious about my ways and loves me, so how can I Disdain Only, No Empathy feelings, and always makes sure I’m get him to chill? “good” when we have sex… but he Dear DONE: But Love Is Not Deceitful also stalks me on Facebook. I answer his questions about my social media activities with some patience, but lately the jealousy has escalated to a new level. Now he monitors not just my feeds, but two of my longtime friends as well. He even accused one of them and I of sneaking around behind his back to have sex. It’s embarrassing.

Dear BLIND:

It’s easy: Just tell her. You can get together without him, or they can visit town We can’t work on him without his input, but and not see you. My bet is she gets the you can work on you. Formally extend your surge of productivity into full-on habits and routines to continue into the indefinite future. Rather than gripe about working hard or maintaining disciplines, realize how damn good it feels to accomplish something tangible. Commit to task-management and regimen. It’s also the best care for your mental health.

Move forward with your self-expressions and carve out a spot for that activity which delivers you unmitigated pleasure, or actively embrace more of what you adore. You recognize what and who makes you happier and which ones cause stress or discontent. Don’t bargain away this chance to prioritize joy for anyone.

It’s all about emotional authenticity. Listen to what’s true for you. It involves larger doses of alone time. Balance interpersonal boundaries with accurately hearing your heart’s wise requests. Recommit to proceed toward what really suits your unique emotional landscape without being scared of how to accomplish it.

Continue letting interactions inspire the next-manymonths of interesting characters, novel settings, meandering conversations and stimulating involvements. Maintain an orientation of welcoming inquisitiveness. You must stay so on task at work, so allow your offtime to fill with pleasant surprises.

Apply critical thinking to simplifying your relationship to material things. Identify problem spots where you’re hesitant to choose one costly desire over another. Can you afford both? You’re hemorrhaging resources, and proper accounting can make you appreciate every precious little life-element you work to secure.

It’s time to make your splash. Figure out the remaining details as you go. Think of it as creative chaos rather than ‘a big fucking mess,’ since it’s required to create something new. Factor in interpersonal effects, but don’t go overboard accommodating so much that you tie your hands at this moment of magic.

More details on your gay horoscope at

Astrobarry.com by Barry Perlman.

You’ll be received graciously, affectionately and admiringly by others. Your most attractive qualities are magnified, yet there is danger of inadvertently creating unanticipated and undesired developments if you try to fix, help, suggest or interrupt. Leave it be. Don’t jump to assumptions about ‘best outcomes.’ Hands off.

Consider how to build upon the momentum amongst your gaggle of peeps. Re-enroll yourself in a purpose, project or group participation to actualize its fullest potential. There are many possibilities once you’re willing to ride the wave of synergistic collaboration, as long as they support your own needs and interests.

You are unmistakably in the spotlight now. Recommit to the next stage by cleaning off collateral ‘dust’ that’s kicked up in the process of your vigorous work. Reorganize details that slipped, and outline a concrete checklist of priorities before ephemeral enthusiasms run away with you and befuddle your focus.

Lead the charge of a life meaningfully lived. Proceed onto unfamiliar, promising ground. Don’t be so strict that you make unforgiving determinations, but also don’t let any doubts rouse irrational fears. You can humbly discover certain blindspots without threatening your overall life-path lucidity.

A lack of control scares you, but it’s just the flip-side of fruitful promise. Officially sign the dotted line on this offer from the Universe, but read enough fine print not to sacrifice too much. Integrate known truths, but know this next step may mean leaving behind things that aren’t authentically you anymore.

Evolve into an increasingly shrewd, realistic partner who speaks up about your likes, dislikes, minor spots with room for improvement, and other annoyances you’d otherwise let slide. This critical moment ushers in your next step— whether or not a certain someone is along for the ride. Is this person helping or hindering?

Bitch

S E S S I O N Just because you cried at a rally doesn't make you the right person to lead the movement.

I appreciate that people came before, but I’m not interested in how every last thing was done in the 70s.

Hey, Ginger Muscle Queen! I hope one day you choke on all that shit you talk about your friends.

You did your best to hide your porn past. I can see why you are so embarrassed by it. Not everyone is willing to get paid to shit out a banana on film.

You make fun of how my disability makes me look, but you’re the one who put that outfit together and walked out the door.

I spent countless hours trying to find my happy place with you. Turns out my happy place is your happy place burning to the ground.

I heard of the hooker with a heart of gold, but hadn’t heard of the pretentious, self righteous hooker considered a "catch" on a reality dating show.

I hope you know your new boo has seen more ATL dick in 90 days than most natives have in 9 years.

10% of Atlanta hopes your dick is as big as your ego. The other 90% knows from personal experience that it’s not.

This election is like Nixon vs. Hitler. You know which one to give a second chance, but damn.
