TASTE OF ATLANTA
RACISM IN THE QUEER COMMUNITY
Maybe it only comes once a year because that’s all the costume fun you can reasonably be expected to handle that often. Under this year’s ‘Night on Broadway’ theme, gay revelers vie for cash prizes in one of the biggest fundraising parties on the LGBT calendar.
You know Atlanta has some of the best chefs and restaurants in the country. Here’s your annual chance to let them prove it. Dozens of the city’s finest eateries and cooks offer up delicious tastings, as well as wine to wash it down in a street fair atmosphere. Eat. Play. Love!
This open forum tries to start tackling this complicated issue with a community forum. Discussions ask such questions as, What does safety look like for Queer people of color? What separates inclusion from tokenization? Join the conversation.

So you’re at a loss for what to wear this Halloween? Lucky for you, we have the best ways to go as something unabashedly, unequivocally, unflinchingly gay.
GENDER-NEUTRAL BATHROOM SIGN
By Mikey Rox
If you felt left out from all this inclusiveness, now’s your chance to raise a few brows and, in all likelihood, draw the ire of a couple backwoods hillbillies. Make your own or go for the wearable unisex bathroom-sign costume from TVStoreOnline.com.
There’s no better time of year to be super gay than Halloween. As always, pop culture this year provides us a treasure trove of costume ideas, from hilarious to haute and beyond. With controversial public policies come to life and the roasting of Ann Coulter and so many more, this year’s biggest headlines, memes and entertainment personalities are now the must-wear, one-night disguises of the season. Halloween is here, LGBT fam, and it’s totally queer. Let’s get in the spirit.
GUTTER SPICE
Social media can make you an overnight celebrity – even if the term is used very liberally. Nobody knows it better than Instagrammer and wannabe backup Britney dancer “Gutter Spice,” who treated millions of viewers to his semi-private swerve sesh before playing coy when an unsuspecting gymgoer walked in on him. To get the look this Halloween, peep the dude’s ’gram. You’ll find a wealth of (mostly shirtless) ideas and more booty than a desert island.
‘ROASTED’ ANN COULTER
Real-life supervillain Ann Coulter got the verbal beating of a lifetime at Comedy Central’s Roast of Rob Lowe earlier this year. She was referred to as “a repugnant, hateful, hatchetfaced bitch” at one point, and nobody disagreed – which makes this figurative concept ripe for your own creativity. You can easily make this a couples’ costume, too, by asking a friend to transform into vile homosexual Milo Yiannopoulos as your devil-horned sidekick. 22 | 10.19.16
Gender-neutral bathrooms became one the most controversial talking points of the year thanks to an influx of transgender-rights bills around the country. The rhetoric (along with the heads of, like, half the United States) exploded when major retailers, including Target, decided to install unisex lavatories, despite calls from the alt-right for a boycott.
ZORN, DEFENDER OF ZEPHYRIA
One look at Zorn, animated star of FOX’s live-action Son of Zorn, and you’ll recognize from where his creators’ inspiration came. He looks a lot like He-Man, Master of the Universe, right down to the furry loincloth, and it’s relatively easy to DIY this costume. Hot glue brown faux fur that you can find at a local craft or fabric store to a pair of briefs and attach it to a wide belt with a homemade letter Z “buckle” in the center. Add a shoulder-length red wig, gold wrist cuffs and a sword, and you’re all set to conquer the tribes of Agon – and maybe a stragler from the gogo bar.
LEMONADE
You could go full-on fierce-bitch Beyoncé this Halloween in all her fur and fringe glory. But you’ll get more guesswork out of a straightforward approach to her Twitter-tizzying album,
Lemonade, with a few nod-and-wink surprises mixed in. There are all manner of creative options on Pinterest to personify the tart-butsweet summer refresher, after which Queen Bey titled her magnum opus,
from glam to cas’. Grab a Louisville Slugger and throw a bottle of hot sauce in your bag (swag), and your own real-life Becky with the good hair won’t know what hit her.
EGGPLANT OR PEACH EMOJI
Leave it to the gays to take something as innocent as the unassuming eggplant and peach emojis and defile them into expressions of lust and pornography. Because, why not? Pick your preference this All Hallows Eve – are you a size queen or an ass man? – and show your friends just how fruity you are. Resources like eBay, Amazon and Jet.com will reveal several quality results.
LOGO’S ‘PRINCE CHARMING’
No, we’re not talking about Snow White’s knight in shining armor here. Rather, Logo’s idea of “royalty,” gay Atlanta’s own Robert Sepùlveda Jr., the former sex worker-turneddating show contestant on Logo’s Finding Prince Charming – our community’s limp-wristed version of The Bachelor. Of course, we pass no judgment on fame-seekers and reality-TV egomaniacs, so we’ll leave that job to you in your characterization of the queen this Halloween. Ah, the irony.
BARE-CHESTED PUTIN ON A HORSE
There are plenty of photographs of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on the interwebs, but perhaps none more famous than the iron-fisted leader’s shirtless horseback gallop through the Siberian countryside. Immediately, and quite fairly, memes sprang forth – many of which suggested a Brokeback Mountain sitch featuring Putin compadre Donald Trump as his riding companion. Recreate these Photoshopped gems as a couples’ costume with a Putin mask available on Amazon plus a million and one options for Trump get-ups in Halloween stores everywhere, completed by a unicorn ride-on costume from TVStoreOnline.com for gay-thenticity.
STRANGER THINGS’ BARB
Everybody’s favorite forgotten dead girl (on Netflix anyway), Stranger Things’ Barb rises from the shadows of the Upside Down just in time to make an appearance at your bestie’s costume party – and you’re in luck. How to recreate this quintessential ’80s wallflower? Make yours complete with vintage pink eyeglasses, a front-buttoned denim skirt from Forever 21, and a cross-body handbag that you can snatch at Target.

TAKES OVER ATL ANTA Chockfull of flash, pizzazz and all-around fabulousness, gay-favorite show helps launch LGBT Atlanta theater. By Matthew Holley Welp, it looks like Atlanta is getting just what it needs, “a cock in a frock on a rock,” in the ultimate fabulous form of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert, The Musical. The production will be to life by Out Front Theatre as the inaugural show of this new LGBT company. As Broadway fans know, Priscilla: The Musical is based on the iconic 1994 cult film of the same name. It charts the journey of Mitzi Del Bra (aka Anthony "Tick" Belrose), Bernadette Bassenger, and Felicia Jollygoodfellow (aka Adam Whitely) on a run-down old bus named Priscilla. The trio set out on a road trip across the Australian Outback, in order for Tick to perform his drag show at his ex-wife’s far-away resort. Artistic director and Out Front 24 | 10.19.16
founder Paul Conroy describes the production as an experience Atlanta undeniably needs. “Priscilla was not the show we were planning to open with,” Conroy explains. “It was a different musical, and Priscilla only became available early this year. The show's never been done in Georgia, so now we have the official Georgia premiere. “We're doing something that's really different for our audiences,” he continues. “People know the movie, so they can connect with the movie, and it's a jukebox musical so people already know the music. The opening number is ‘It's Raining Men,’ and the Act 1 finale is ‘I Will Survive.’” Look for other disco hits like “I Love the Night-life” and “Hot stuff.” “It's all songs people know,” Conroy says. “It seemed like the perfect choice of a way to make it accessible to as many people as possible.” Considering the politics of equality being discussed and progressed across the country in recent years,
davidatlanta.com | 25
Priscilla is as timely as ever.is comprised of local talent, faces gay Atlanta will recognize at once. Stepping into the three leads are Broadway veteran and local cabaret all star Robert Ray, who's been performing for 45 years. Justin Thompson, known for his work with Legacy Theater and Atlanta Lyric Theater, and theater vet Jason Jamal Liggin round out the fierce threesome. With a total cast of 17, the ensemble features talent from people fresh out of college, local mainstays, as well as some returning to the stage after a hiatus. “We have a very diverse cast, which we're immensely proud,” Conroy gushes. Such local starpower, a legendary story and a production shaping up like no other, die-hard fans and newcomers to Priscilla are sure to want tickets, as each
show is already selling out to capacity in a theater with a capacity of only 163 seats. “I'm sick of using the word fabulous to describe the show, but that’s what it is,” Conroy says. “It's huge. I don't think audience is going to expect what we're giving them, but we have an actual bus on stage! We've purchased a school bus. It was cut in half, and it's being reassembled on the stage.” That’s a lot, but it’s not nearly all. “There are hundreds of hundreds of custom-made costumes, with materials ordered from all over the world,” Conroy boasts. “Our costume designer is a professional dress designer [who] does a lot of work in the movie industry and with the pageant circuit. Actually when Miss Georgia was crowned Miss America last year, she was wearing one of his gowns.” Prepare yourself, Conroy warns. “I think people just have to be ready for spectacle and to have fun,” he sums up. “They know the music. They know the movie. It's just fun!” Priscilla: The Musical premieres at Out Front Theatre on Thurs., Oct. 20 and runs through Sun., Nov. 6. outfronttheatre.com

THINGS about HILL ARY by Mike Fleming
You’re probably already Team Hillz. As the rest soothe Berns or jump careening #TrumpTrains, here’s why Hillary Clinton is now your best candidate for Nov. 8.
1 2
Down with Haters
In the U.S. Senate, Hillary championed legislation to address hate crimes, fought for federal non-discrimination legislation to protect LGBT Americans in the workplace, and advocated for an end to restrictions that blocked LGBT Americans from adopting children.
Federal Rights
As secretary of state, Hillary advanced LGBT rights abroad and enforced stronger anti-discrimination regulations within the State Department, declaring on the global stage that “gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights.” Hillary led the effort to pass the first-ever U.N. Resolution on LGBT Human Rights, launched the Global Equality Fund, ended State Department regulations that denied same-sex couples and their families equal rights, helped implement LGBT-friendly workplace policies, and updated the State Department’s policy so that transgender individuals’ passports reflect their true gender.
3
Under the Law
Hillary’s LGBT promise include a federal investment in law enforcement training that focuses on fair and impartial policing, including in interactions with LGBT
28 | 10.19.16
people. Unlike her opponent, she also promises to appoint Supreme Court justices who would uphold marriage equality, and to continue all of President Obama's executive orders like National Pride Month.
4 5
Military Honors
Hillary applauds the Pentagon’s decision to allow transgender personnel to serve openly, and as Commanderin-Chief, she promises to upgrade service records of LGBT veterans dismissed due to their sexual orientation.
Going Forward
While Republicans are attempting to roll back LGBT rights, Hillary’s moving forward—because even though marriage equality is now the law of the land, we still have a lot of work to do to ensure that all LGBT Americans are treated equally under the law. Her plan to expand LGBT rights and protections includes outlawing workplace discrimination for being gay and/ or trans in the 31 states where it remains, ending conversion therapy for minors, gather data to form a plan that ends anti-trans violence, open more doors to gay adoption, increase access to HIV prevention drugs, and fight LGBT youth homelessness. parties are in the right, they should maintain it by telling the groom what’s up so he has a chance to correct it – or burn the bridge himself.
HEY,
Hey, Daddy!
Daddy!
One wedding stands to unravel our long-standing, tightknit circle of gay friends. Two guys in the group decided to get married, and apparently such things make people’s true colors to come out.
said the trip was a blast. It was apparently so bad, some longtime mutual friends are bailing on the wedding, and a couple of us loyalists are stuck in the middle. We don’t want to mention it to Groomzilla or he’ll know they’re talking about him, but we don’t want their absence to be the first he hears there was a problem.
The first and the worst to flip out is one of the grooms – the stay-at-home one with too much time on his hands. He’s decided that not just is this day all about him, but the year leading up to it as well. The word Groomzilla Men's Acrimony Is Definitely Severe comes to mind, but it really doesn’t Dear MAIDS: do justice to how he’s acting. They may have good reason to decline So a group took Groomzilla for a their invitations, but they don’t have bachelor weekend. I was otherwise standing to pull a no-show. That’s fighting encumbered, so was unable to fire with gasoline. attend. Reports of Groomzilla treating everyone like hell are truly The responsibility of this situation is not terrifying, but when I asked him, he on you. If the argument is that the injured
As of now, there’s a lot of gay drama from all sides. Groomzilla is on a cloud and oblivious to the consequences of his actions, the offended friends want to lash out and retaliate rather than resolve the real problem, and you remaining queens are gossiping about it as if that does anyone any good. First one to the high road of communication to clear the air wins. Hey, Daddy! I asked my partner for a break from sex while I try to work out some old traumas. A week in, he started harassing me for nookie, then asked if he could fuck other guys. I feel betrayed. Now I have this pain on top of my original issue. What should I do? He Undermined Real Trust Dear HURT: You asked for a break, not a permanent shut down, so I agree he acted selfishly. If you need time to work things out, tell him how you feel. He can stay or go, but you aren’t equipped right now to deal with your problem and his too.

This would be a lovely time to tell a partner, best pal, key player, or close collaborator how much they mean to you. Explicitly articulate your appreciation. Pursue your singleminded aims passionately, but don’t forget about the side effects on them. Address it head-on with humility and gratitude to turn resentment into support.
Choose your battles wisely. You’re swamped, and you can’t take on all at the same time, and still expect to perform at your highest competency. Follow your conscience, but recognize any righteous mission is taking priority over accomplishing those jobs-and-chores in a timely and capable manner. Which is more important to you?
Don't be afraid to speak your mind, even if it’s not likely to fix anything. You can’t deny the magnitude of the latest developments, no matter how smooth a conversational courseplotter you may be. Everything is already headed a certain direction, so why try to forestall the inevitable?
Your thoughts are heavily colored by your own subjective emotional outlook than may immediately be apparent. Don’t take the bait in a battle of wills. Should you find yourself confronted by another person's threatening insistence – even if there's really no getting around it, you can conscientiously control the quality of your own responses.
Stick to the rallying-cry of 'work hard, play hard.' You may feel pulled from one end to the other, but you won’t be satisfied if you try to solve this tension by totally championing either consideration over the other. Both work and play come to a head in the coming weeks. Use this week to further work knowing that more more social temptation is coming.
Study the details related to small adjustments or minor concessions you make to establish a position as a right-hand cohort worthy of trust. There is a danger in too heedlessly uttering such sentiments, even though they may be your ticket to a rise in income or esteem. Don’t make a concession just to nab a quick buck or a fawning endorsement.

The exuberance with which you express yourself is a lot for others to handle. Do it anyway. The heightened force of your self-regard could awaken resistance, but you need that level of intensity. If your inner diplomat balks, remind yourself you're fighting a big battle and now you've got the edge. Don’t settle for less than triumph.
Revel in the power of your latest creative breakthrough, but take time before trying to sell its merit to others. Let everyone else work out the kinks in their own perspectives and methods. Take this instrumental hands-off step and allow the playing field to clear itself. After that, your fresh outlook will receive a warmer welcome.
Refrain from actively publicizing or pressing your personal agenda. Instead lend your voice to a larger chorus. Adopting this group-minded flavor is essentially the flipside to recent advice, but alliances are cemented now by affirmatively articulating them. Your personal agenda can come back when everything’s in place.
Be as diplomatic in your phrasing as you can, but stop short of anything so insincere or inaccurate that it'll set off your own inner bullshit-detector. Respectfully participate in whatever protocol-dance is required. You must blend your feisty self-determination with a healthy amount of gracious courtesy to those who came before.
You're catching a more integrative, future-facing, wider-angle view of current conditions than others, but don’t get too self-satisfied about it. While you can see the components, you can't inspect the on-the-ground details. No amount of insisting, nor racking your brain for ideal solutions, can substitute for simply letting time tell.
Don't let anyone’s oversimplified thinking, bandwagon rhetoric, or bullyish pressure cause you to make ill-advised compromises. Don’t choose sides. Try to keep complicated conversations continuous and open-ended, but some people may be unable to do so. In those cases, negotiating can be a losing proposition—and a waste of breath.

Skinny bitches who call themselves fat. No!
Hey hair queen, If only your dick was as big as your ego. Don’t whine about not having a partner when the only guys you’ll look at twice are 21, and you are 44. You’re those people Oscar Wilde warned about: No enemies, but you’re intensely disliked by your own friends.
Don’t let anyone with Ladybrows tell you shit about life.
