BUT A REAL FAMILY TAKES EVEN
more than that. They get the real you and actually love you because of, and sometimes despite, the warts and flaws. It’s the place not to just share joys, but a secure shelter in times of desperation. These are the people who hear your problems and take them on as their own with thoughts toward solutions, not judgments. Family is your team. It’s a mutual responsibility to care for and respect each other. Scores of gay men who are estranged, ostracized or otherwise without their blood relations find a new kindred that truly make a family. You call them before your mom when you get a job. They call you when that no-good boyfriend finally lays the last straw.

YOU KNOW THE HOLIDAYS ARE ROUGH ON SOME PEOPLE AND THAT LGBTS ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE LONELY, BUT THE CONVERSATION SHOULDN’T STOP WITH PLATITUDES ABOUT FAMILY OF CHOICE. WHILE MUCH OF GAY ATLANTA

When our families of origin aren’t there or aren’t good for us, we have our friends. 20 | 11.23.16

harassment, and hate-inspired violence against us are still situations we try to help people work through on a regular basis. Now that there’s so much uncertainty around what will happen next, we are carrying that sick feeling in our guts begging the question, “what will happen to the most vulnerable among us?” Some of you who get up everyday to fight for LGBTQ people and rights are also living some of the harsher realities of queer life.

Holidays by Mike Fleming
THEATRICAL VENUES GO ALL OUT WITH HOLIDAY FARE FROM SNARKY GAY TO SEXY CIRQUE AND BEYOND This weekend makes it official. Thanksgiving means that the holidays are upon us, and if you haven’t cheated already, on Friday you can start listening to Christmas music – as long as the nearest Grinch who’d strangle you for it is out of earshot. The season also means a slew of gay-popular shows on Atlanta stages. Whether youre after a taste of Christmas past with traditional holiday shows or a thoroughly modern milieu, there’s a play, musical or other live production just waiting to please you.
event updates grabbed from today’s headlines to keep it fresh. The show runs through Dec. 31. Visit horizontheatre.com Another don’t-miss spectacle comes with hot bodies in spandex contorting for you pleasure – albeit in a totally rated G way. Get your tickets Cirque Dreams: Holidaze at the Fox from Nov. 23 – Nov. 25. Find tickets and more information at cirqueproductions.com and at foxtheatre.org.
The gayest – and for diehard fans, the greatest – is the return of Harold Leaver in The Santaland Diaries at Horizon Theatre. This year marks his 18th year in the lead role as David Sedaris’ bitchy department store elf.
And Christmas in gay Atlanta wouldn’t be the same without the annual concert program from Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus. This year’s “Comfort & Joy” show stages three performances Dec. 2 and Dec. 3 at St. Philip Cathedral in Midtown.
As an unhappy helper in the Santa section of a Macy’s during the busy shopping season, he has plenty of audience participation, snappy oneliners, and funny, irreverent current
Besides those sure-fire hits, Atlanta’s arts community rolls out its usual slate of holiday fare for all ages from the young to the young at heart. Here’s our list of must-see shows.

Gay Games by Paul Tassi
QUEER CHARACTERS AND COUPLES IN MAINSTREAM GAMES HAVE GONE FROM PUNCHLINES TO HOLDING THEIR OWN All forms of popular culture have taken awhile to include more LGBTQ characters, but games especially have used gay and transgender characters as punchlines for a long while now, and only now are we starting to see that shift in earnest. As a result, we still have almost no lead characters in games that are gay outside of the indie scene. Some have been around so long that their great romances are set in stone (Mario/Peach, Link/Zelda) and your new-gen heroes like Master Chief or Kratos or Lara Croft or Nathan Drake are straight, and will probably remain that way. That doesn’t mean progress hasn’t been made, however. I’ve thought back to the games I’ve played in the last few years, and there have been a number of gay characters that have stood out to me in one way or another. Most have relatively small roles in their games, some don’t. Some have made overt statements made about their sexuality, others haven’t. So in honor of Pride Month, I’ve put together a list of the best in mainstream games. This isn’t a perfect list, and the gay characters on it may have their own problems with tropes or stereotypes, but I like them all for different reasons. It’s a short list, and I’m sure I missed a few examples that some would have liked to see included. I’m also sure some have various problems as to why some of these characters may not be the “best” gay characters. But this is my list, and I hope it’s able to expand dramatically in the future. That’s certainly the trend, as we move away from stereotypes and jokes to real, LGBTQ characters.
Kung Jin (Mortal Kombat X)
Kung Jin is a new fighter introduced in 2015’s Mortal Kombat X who is significant because his sexuality is only mentioned in only mentioned in passingand not spotlighted in the least. The fact that Kung Jin is gay is referenced only in a few lines of dialogue, and fighting games, more than most, tend to use tropes when including trans, gay or just effeminate fighters. But Kung Jin is just a badass dude with a bow whose sexuality has nothing to do with how he’s able to murder you fifty different ways. 26 | 11.23.16

Kung Jin (Mortal Kombat X)
Steve Cortez (Mass Effect 3)
Here comes the march of the Bioware games, as far and away the developer has gone out of their way more than anyone else to include LGBTQ characters. But again, early on we ran into this problem where many characters were only gay/bi if you wanted them to be. That changed by Mass Effect 3 when the game started introducing characters that were permanently straight or permanently gay, no matter the gender/preferences of your Shepard. Cortez was your pilot who you learn lost his husband to a Collector raid. As a male Shepard, you can romance him, and that plotline lead to the infamous “Mass Effect Gay Sex Scene” which was more or less shirtless cuddling. Still, it was a good move forward for the series, and the industry as a whole.
Dorian (Dragon Age: Inquisition)
I will apologize for not playing more Dragon Age, as I know there are a number of gay characters I could include here. I didn’t really like many of the characters in Inquisition, but Dorian was my favorite that I kept in my party just because he was hilarious. He was perhaps a tiny bit stereotypically flamboyant, but I don’t think that’s a problem, and he was just a lot of fun as a party member. Obviously there were a lot of characters I could have put in this Dragon Age spot, and you might have had an alternate favorite. Steve Cortez (Mass Effect 3)
Tiny Tina (Borderlands 2)
Dorian (Dragon Age: Inquisition)
Borderlands 2 has a few gay/bi characters, including Sir Hammerlock (who is gay) and Mad Moxxxi (who is bi) but I like the way the game snuck in a few lines to show that Tiny Tina is actually gay herself. She talks about crushing on both Maya and Moxxxi, and the writers have confirmed these were not throwaway lines, and were intentionally written to reveal her preferences. Tiny Tina is one of my favorite Borderlands characters, so I wanted to include her here, even if Hammerlock and Moxxxi might be more overt about their orientation..
You (RPGs)
Yes, you, the player, the hero, the savior of…whatever. There are too many games to count at this point that allow your character to be gay, but as RPGs evolved, one aspect of designing your character meant that you could also pursue the orientation of your choice. In many games that means you can romance both male and female characters, but the point is that in games like Fable, Fallout, Mass Effect, Saints Row, Dragon Age and so on, you can choose to be gay the entire time, if you want. So while iconic game heroes from Mario to Metroid to Kratos to Lara Croft will always be straight, your hero in a number of AAA games can technically be gay, if that’s your desire. And that’s pretty cool. This article originally appeared on forbes.com, PCgamer, IGN.com, and unicornbooty.com. The opinions expressed are the author’s own. Tiny Tina (Borderlands 2) 28 | 11.23.16

THANKSGIVING BRINGS JUST THE EXTENDED WEEKEND YOU’VE BEEN CRAVING TO TURN THE HOLIDAY INTO A HOLIGAY By Mike Fleming
With not one day off but often two, most of gay Atlanta gets a four-day weekend as Thanksgiving rolls around. As if you needed an excuse to let loose.
Over at Heretic, popular touring DJ Deanne hits the decks. A portion of your entry fee at that event benefits Joining Hearts and their ongoing mission to fight HIV/AIDS in Atlanta.
Aside from family obligations for some, the man-on-man nightlife train makes extra stops. Beginning on Wednesday night, it continues unabated with extra steam through Saturday.
Your Wednesday bar hop continues for Thanksgiving Eve with the Gobble Girls. Headed by one of our David Atlanta Heroes for 2016, Angelica D’Paige, the bar is hopping and the queens will be popping. Look for Destiny Brooks, Alissah Brooks, Jaeda P. Starr and Brigitte Bidet.
First stop: Wednesday. That’s when Heretic, Burkhart’s and Ten have made a few holiday traditions of their own every Thanksgiving Eve for as long as anyone can remember. Of course, all your favorite watering holes are open and pouring, but at these events in particular, look for special guest DJs and performances. After skipping Atlanta for L.A. a few years ago, DJ Jay McCracken returns to Ten Atlanta as DJ Kraax. Look for his signature beats in a special blacklights in the dark party.

The whole thing is set up to suit the annual crowds expected – a combination of native Atlanta guys and college boys back in town for Thanksgiving with family, as well as resident gays who stay home to celebrate the Big Day their way. It’s a proven recipe for fun. Just for the occasion, the red carpet rolls out and stays out all weekend. we gathered some of our favorite event options.

This is the first guy I met when I moved here, and I care about him, but I also know I don’t have much room to talk when it comes to indulging in party favors. Should I confront him? Wouldn’t Ordinarily Really Intervene, Except Doubtful Dear WORRIED: Your concern is probably more common than many gay guys like to talk about. Whether we ourselves choose to indulge in chemical escapism and risk the consequences, it doesn’t mean we can’t see the signs when some lose themselves. First and foremost, be careful. What if your friend’s health is at risk from an undiagnosed virus? What if he, as you hint, is going through something that's stressing him out so much he’s letting himself go? You can’t confront him about drugs if you don’t know it for a fact, because you can cause damage with the assumption before you have a chance to help.
HEY,
Daddy! Hey, Daddy! I think my friend might be abusing drugs. Before I even get started, I’m going to come right out and say that I dabble recreationally like some other gay men, usually when I hit the clubs, so I’m not judging the party per se. At first, I just thought he was being weird or going through something that made him act differently. Several months ago, he started going manic on occasion, accusing good friends of talking behind his back. Not everybody is affected the same way by the same drugs, so I chalked it up to a little too much snuff in the snort. Lately, he upped the ante on my suspicions, and others in our friend group are noticing it too. He’s losing weight, and not in a good way. His eyes are sunken in and dark, and his accusations have blown up into full-on thinking everyone is out to get him. He grinds his teeth. Even when I don’t suspect he’s on it right this moment, I do know all of these can be signs of prolonged meth use. 56 | 11.23.16
I do think you should approach your friend, but I think it may take more than one conversation. Ask him if there’s anything he wants to talk about. Keep it to your own observations, and leave your other friends out of it. If he thinks people are talking behind his back, you’d only be feeding his paranoia. Tell him you are concerned because he seems different. If he still avoids it, tell him you’re there for him if he changes his mind or anything comes up. This opens the door for him to come to you, and for you to circle back and broach it again a little later. If he’s not ready to confide in you, that doesn’t mean your friendship has to be over. The line between being supportive and pushy is fine and hard to navigate. Use your best instincts. Of course you’re right about one thing: The symptoms you name could definitely be signs of drug abuse. Gay men and meth are a well-documented duo. If your friend confides that this is his situation, or if you find direct evidence of such, encourage professional help. You can support him, but you can’t fix him.

An ego trip usually has a very hard landing. Your ruler Mars opposing Neptune makes it hard to know whether you’re offering too much or too little. Who knows your heart best can tell you how big it really is.
Sometimes your charm comes too easily. Overdoing it can alienate some people. What does your partner think about your flirtations? Accept criticism graciously and think seriously about it!

Your erotic charms are nearly irresistible. How you use them will tell the world a lot about your values. You’re better off keeping your reputation clean. Honesty and strategy are crucial to winning a struggle at work.
You can charm your partner – real or prospective – into almost anything, but its best to use this openness to work on issues in your relationship. The high-minded, mature approach is harder, but in the long run yields better results.
This week’s full moon brings out your wild side, shocking some friends or making some new ones, and probably starting some very titillating gossip. Enemies at work might try to use that against you, but you can turn it to your advantage.
Arguments with your partner are based on misunderstanding and your overreactions. Less drama, more empathy would help. Worries about money may be based in reality, but probably still exaggerated. The outlook will improve very soon.
Don’t worry yourself sick! Channel that energy into exercise. Swimming and martial arts like tai chi are best. A wave of domestic bliss offers a platform for some serious improvements. Sexual competition can be fun; taking it seriously can get dangerous.
58 | 11.23.16
Adding another candle doesn’t mean you have to prove anything. Self-consciousness can provoke you to overdo things, hurting yourself or complicating your work. Think less about yourself, more about your partner: committed, for the moment, or hypothetical.
Mixed messages and rumors can hurt your reputation. Defensiveness just makes it worse. Look at the problem as one to heal with good humor, even at your expense. Clear it up! Opportunity’s around the corner.
One can be over-competitive at work. Pay attention to those nagging inner voices. They can help correct your perspective even if you don’t like what they say. Charity work will also do you much good.
Don’t take personal criticisms too seriously, but spats with friends can show where you need self-improvement. You don’t need to prove your intellectual prowess, but you may need to admit to your limitations so you can expand your wisdom.
Give yourself a little room to be a drama queen – in the right time and place – just to let the frustrations out. Friends will be a lot more supportive than you expect. Being too nice can work against you; focus on being just nice enough.
