It's hard to control the laughter welling up inside, only to lose the battle and begin laughing like you are front row at a comedy club? This is my life. THE WORD ‘RETARD’ I know it’s wrong, but that one gets me too. Yes, it’s politically incorrect, however people do still use the word. When they do, it's a lesser version of the fart scenario. I start laughing, and people think the person who used the word is a dick, and I'm guilty by association for laughing.

What’s Normal Anyway? By Chris Vizzini

I've never felt like other people. Even early on, I certainly didn't behave like most other people. Most gay men probably feel the same way to some extent and to varying degrees, though maybe not my particular affliction of laughing at socially awkward and inappropriate times like a 7th Grader. With some years under my belt, I can dial "it" down when need be, but it’s still there underneath the surface. It's rare so it happens when the woman doing the cunt-calling is furious, seeing red, want-to-kill-the-bitch angry. She's met with a sophomoric person laughing like someone farted at a urinal. I'm going to make "like someone farted at a urinal" a saying. DOG SQUAT When dogs poop, I lose it. By now, you probably think I have arrested development. While I won't rule that out entirely, most of the time everything is in check, and no one would be the wiser. However, when a dog poops, is not one of the times. It's the way they just stand there dropping log after log, looking around to see who is watching then finally taking it home with the "pinch clinch" that makes their tails go up and down. Well, I'm on the floor at that point, having no idea why but enjoying the laughter nonetheless.

DID I WRITE AN ARTICLE JUST TO SAY men. Sometimes the dial spins off its base, words like "poop" and "retard?" A sense of ‘Community’ By Jeff Berry

AS WE MARK ANOTHER WORLD AIDS DAY, ONE GAY POZ GUY AND HIV ADVOCATE REFLECTS ON THE EVOLUTION, AND THE IMPORTANCE, OF ‘COMMUNITY’ IN THE ONGOING STRUGGLE. 24 | 11.30.16

‘COMMUNITY’ IS A WORD OFTEN BANDIED ABOUT at HIV meetings, conferences and gatherings, but it’s sometimes a loaded word that means different things to different people with its definition varying on the setting or context in which it’s used. Community can be based on geography, a common history, or social, economic and political interests. Then there is the psychological sense of community, defined by “a feeling that members have of belonging,” that they matter to one another. All of our various communities are in flux with an overall general increase in awareness of social injustices in our society, and the realization that positive change needs to occur. Some communities have recently come under attack, both literally and figuratively, in the midst of a very divisive political climate. But even in the darkest moments, hope rises up – whether in response to the Pulse nightclub shootings, or in an effort to exert our power after the most recent presidential election. WHEN I GOT A JURY SUMMONS RECENTLY, I SPENT A day with 41 individuals being questioned for possible service in a civil suit. I really didn’t want to be selected because I would have had to cancel a vacation, but as the day wore on I was fascinated by the process, and quite impressed by the knowledge and wisdom of the judge. He kept stressing how we are the only country in the world in which civil cases are left to 12 members of a community to decide, after weighing all of the facts. He used the word “community” several times throughout the day, and after being in the same room all day with the others, sharing details about our lives, I felt a strong sense of community. We were of diverse backgrounds, but we were together to work toward a common cause. In July, I attended the International AIDS Conference in Durban. Shortly after my arrival, I was invited to participate in a demonstration against HIV criminalization. I had my chant memorized and my Stop HIV Criminalization T-shirt ready to go. The final speaker, Edward Cameron, an African judge and activist for AIDS and gay rights, stepped up to the podium to give the lecture. “IT HAS BEEN 35 YEARS SINCE THE WESTERN WORLD was alerted to AIDS. The first cases of a baffling new, terrifying, unknown syndrome were first reported in the northern summer of 1981... These last 35 years since then have been long. For many of us, it has been an arduous and exhausting and often dismaying journey.”

My eyes started tearing up. “Since this first report, 35 million people have died of AIDS illnesses – in 2015 alone, 1.1 million people,” Cameron said. “We have felt the burden of this terrible disease in our bodies, on our minds, on our friends and colleagues, on our loved ones and our communities. “AIDS exposes us in all our terrible human vulnerability,” he drove home. “It brings to the fore our fears and prejudices. It takes its toll on our bodily organs and our muscles and our flesh. It has exacted its terrible toll on our young people and parents and brothers and sisters and neighbors.” Then I began to cry. “So let us pause, first, in remembrance of those who have died: those for whom treatment didn’t come in time; those for whom treatment wasn’t available, or accessible; those denied treatment by our own failings as planners and thinkers and doers and leaders; those whom the internal nightmare of shame and stigma put beyond reach of intervention and help.” “These years have demanded of us a long and anguished and grief-stricken journey,” he continued. “But it has also been a journey of light—a journey of technological, scientific, organizational, and activist triumph.” BY THEN I WAS SOBBING. IT TOOK ALL I COULD TO suppress my emotions that came bubbling up to the surface from almost 30 years of living with HIV, and nearly a quarter of a century working in the field. It was as though someone finally gave me the permission to feel all that sadness, shame, neglect and anguish. Cameron went on to highlight the stunning achievements to whom many of us with HIV owe our lives. I felt a true sense of community in that moment, and the sense that great things can be achieved when we all come together to achieve a common cause. So the next time you hear the word “community,” think about how wonderful and amazing communities are, and the potential they have and what they can truly accomplish. Changing the world can seem daunting, next to impossible. But true change in our community starts with us, one person at a time. We only have to take the time to reach out, take our neighbors by the hand, and lift each other up. What is TRUVADA for PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis)? TRUVADA is a prescription medicine that can be used for PrEP to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 infection when used together with safer sex practices. This use is only for adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1 through sex. This includes HIV-negative men who have sex with men and who are at high risk of getting infected with HIV-1 through sex, and male-female sex partners when one partner has HIV-1 infection and the other does not. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to prevent getting HIV-1. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION What is the most important information I should know about TRUVADA for PrEP?

Before taking TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce your risk of getting HIV-1 infection: u You must be HIV-negative. You must get tested to make sure that you do not already have HIV-1 infection. Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 unless you are confirmed to be HIV-negative. u Many HIV-1 tests can miss HIV-1 infection in a person who has recently become infected. If you have flu-like symptoms, you could have recently become infected with HIV-1. Tell your healthcare provider if you had a flu-like illness within the last month before starting TRUVADA for PrEP or at any time while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Symptoms of new HIV-1 infection include tiredness, fever, joint or muscle aches, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, night sweats, and/or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or groin. While taking TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce your risk of getting HIV-1 infection: u You must continue using safer sex practices. Just taking TRUVADA for PrEP may not keep you from getting HIV-1. u You must stay HIV-negative to keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP. u To further help reduce your risk of getting HIV-1: • Know your HIV-1 status and the HIV-1 status of your partners. • Get tested for HIV-1 at least every 3 months or when your healthcare provider tells you. • Get tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Other infections make it easier for HIV-1 to infect you. • Get information and support to help reduce risky sexual behavior. • Have fewer sex partners. • Do not miss any doses of TRUVADA. Missing doses may increase your risk of getting HIV-1 infection. • If you think you were exposed to HIV-1, tell your healthcare provider right away. u If you do become HIV-1 positive, you need more medicine than TRUVADA alone to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time.

TRUVADA can cause serious side effects:

u Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis),

which is a serious medical emergency. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, nausea, vomiting, stomach-area pain, cold or blue hands and feet, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, and/or fast or abnormal heartbeats. u Serious liver problems. Your liver may become large and tender, and you may develop fat in your liver. Symptoms of liver problems include your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, and/or stomach-area pain. u You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or serious liver problems if you are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking TRUVADA for a long time. In some cases, these serious conditions have led to death. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any symptoms of these conditions. u Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. If you also have HBV and take TRUVADA, your hepatitis may become worse if you stop taking TRUVADA. Do not stop taking TRUVADA without first talking to your healthcare provider. If your healthcare provider tells you to stop taking TRUVADA, they will need to watch you closely for several months to monitor your health. TRUVADA is not approved for the treatment of HBV.

Who should not take TRUVADA for PrEP?

Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you already have HIV-1 infection or if you do not know your HIV-1 status. If you are HIV-1 positive, you need to take other medicines with TRUVADA to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you also take lamivudine (Epivir-HBV) or adefovir (HEPSERA).

What are the other possible side effects of TRUVADA for PrEP? Serious side effects of TRUVADA may also include:

u Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare

provider may do blood tests to check your kidneys before and during treatment with TRUVADA for PrEP. If you develop kidney problems, your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking TRUVADA for PrEP. u Bone problems, including bone pain or bones getting soft or thin, may lead to fractures. Your healthcare provider may do tests to check your bones. u Changes in body fat, which can happen in people taking TRUVADA or medicines like TRUVADA. Common side effects in people taking TRUVADA for PrEP are stomach-area (abdomen) pain, headache, and decreased weight. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that bother you or do not go away.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking TRUVADA for PrEP? u All your health problems. Be sure to tell your healthcare

provider if you have or have had any kidney, bone, or liver problems, including hepatitis virus infection.

Please see Important Facts about TRUVADA for PrEP including important warnings on the following pages.

u If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not

known if TRUVADA can harm your unborn baby. If you become pregnant while taking TRUVADA for PrEP, talk to your healthcare provider to decide if you should keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Pregnancy Registry: A pregnancy registry collects information about your health and the health of your baby. There is a pregnancy registry for women who take medicines to prevent HIV-1 during pregnancy. For more information about the registry and how it works, talk to your healthcare provider. u If you are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. The medicines in TRUVADA can pass to your baby in breast milk. If you become HIV-1 positive, HIV-1 can be passed to the baby in breast milk.

u All the medicines you take, including prescription and over-

the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. TRUVADA may interact with other medicines. Keep a list of all your medicines and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. u If you take certain other medicines with TRUVADA for PrEP, your healthcare provider may need to check you more often or change your dose. These medicines include ledipasvir with sofosbuvir (HARVONI). You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.FDA.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any new symptoms while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Your healthcare provider will need to do tests to monitor your health before and during treatment with TRUVADA for PrEP.

BEFORE TAKING TRUVADA FOR PrEP Tell your healthcare provider if you: • Have or have had any kidney, bone, or liver problems, including hepatitis infection. • Have any other medical conditions. • Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. • Are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. ‘Party with Impact’ by Matthew Holley

ANNUAL FUNDRAISING PARTY WITH CLIENT-CENTERED CARE ORGANIZATION POSITIVE IMPACT CELEBRATES 25 YEARS IN ATLANTA It was 25 years ago that some gay caregiving professionals noticed that even as improvement in medical care came, no one was treating the mental affects of HIV and AIDS. Enter Positive Impact, which has been serving Atlanta’s HIV-positive population ever since. Ultimately expanding to help eliminate the risk of HIV transmission, the organization features an extensive assortment of programs in the areas of community outreach, free HIV and STD testing, counseling for groups and individuals, prevention and education services, substance abuse treatment, internship programs and its most recent program, MISTER—Men’s Information Services: Testing Empowerment Resources, a community center for gay and bisexual men. In 2015, Positive Impact and another long-standing AIDS service organization, AID Gwinnett, became one. The merger allows Positive Impact to soar to new heights and access an even broader database, all solely catering to its core mission to help local people with HIV. In honor of Positive Impact’s influence on the LGBT community of greater Atlanta, the organization cordially invites all allies, friends and loved ones 30 | 11.30.16

Of its areas of interest, MARBL has been fiercely dedicated to documenting Atlanta’s response to HIV/ AIDS.

will be served a la Wolfgang Puck Catering. Guests may in doubly look forward to indulging in Wolfgang classic concoctions and reinventions. Mike’s MEN

FAMED GAY PHOTOGRAPHER MIKE RUIZ MAKES EVERY MONTH OF 2017 A LITTLE BETTER WITH PRETTY PICS OF ‘PECS & PUPS’ 40 | 11.30.16

Everyone loves to look at pictures of adorable dogs, and everyone loves to look at pictures of beautiful hunky men. What happens when you combine the two? The internet explodes, for one. Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue’s calendar collaboration with celebrated gay shutterbug Mike Ruiz is the other. Together they created the steamy 2017 monthly flipper called Pecs & Pups. As you ight expect, each month features a jaw-dropping chiseled hunk paired with a rescue dog in shots you won’t soon forget, including this week’s David cover boy and the gorgeous guys on these pages. Yum. Ruiz’s resume speaks for itself, with clients like Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry and Prince, he’s no stranger to the celebrity world. Of course, some TV fans may know him best from guest spots on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” putting the queens through their paces in hard-to-get shots. Still, his passion for the male figure is unparalleled and what he is best known for. “Sculpting the human body is one of the highest art forms,” Ruiz says. “I admire the skill and knowledge required to form human tissue to near perfection.

Photographing these works of art is quite gratifying to me.” Ruiz’s fervor is apparent in his striking works, and for the Pecs & Pups calendar, he pulls out all the stops. The calendar is guaranteed to put a smile on your face every morning. The hunks themselves are famous in their own right, including Andrew Englund, Michael Dean and Frank Carter, each with hundreds of thousands of social media followers and established links to animal rescue and advocacy. Ruiz knew that teaming up with these guys with darling dogs would be a “marketing no-brainer,” he says. We can’t argue with that solid logic. But for Ruiz, it’s also personal. He adopted his pitbull Oliver four years ago, and it invoked a desire to work with animals in need. Knowing that Oliver was basically left for dead triggered a realization that there are many other dogs like him that need homes. The photographer wanted to help by combining his passions – men, photography and dog rescue. It’s a perfect pairing, and we get to reap the rewards in the Pups & Pecs calendar. The dogs that appear in the calendar were chosen at random – something to be noted because in most images davidatlanta.com | 41

they steal the show from their muscular partners. They are all available for adoption via the beneficiary, Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue, and they represent only a fraction of the dogs in need. Ruiz wants to shatter misconceptions about rescue dogs, he shares. “People think that the more you pay for a dog, the healthier and smarter he/she will be, whereas public perception of dogs from a rescue are sickly or behaviorally damaged,” he asserts. “The reality is an animal, they breed dogs endlessly to achieve certain physical qualities. Often, this type of breeding leads to physical and behavioral deficiencies. “On the other hand,” he continues, “a rescue organization will make sure he/she is medically cared for and rehabilitated to insure that the dog will be adoptable. You are far more likely to get a happy, healthy dog from a rescue than from a backyard breeder.” After a rough year for man, fans of Ruiz, of dogs and of beefcake, like just about everyone else, are looking forward to having a stellar 2017. There’s no better way to get through an amazing year that with a stunning image to admire each day. Pecs & Pups is a win-win-win for everyone involved. The calendar was created out of the devotion to a wonderful cause, and it has universal appeal. It is 15 months of perfection, including three bonus months in 2018. And here you are having not even thought that far ahead yet! Every dollar from the sale of Pecs & Pups goes directly to Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue. It makes the perfect gift for any gay man with eyes and a pulse, including yourself, it brings awareness of the dog rescue situation, and hopefully bringing one home helps bring home those in need. Purchase the 2017-2018 Pecs & Pups calendar by Mike Ruize for $19.95 at louieslegacy.org.

Hey, Daddy! The greatest guy is interested in me, but he’s lean and nearly hairless. I can only cum with a big, hairy guy. He’s perfect, but the smoothness is a total turn-off. Help! Brawny Obviously Better Dear Bob: Like I told CRAZY, preferences are valid until they’re in the way. It sounds like your narrowly defined hankerings are keeping you from what you really want. There are ways to broaden your horizons. You might not learn to prefer chicken over your all-beef diet, but a nice leg and thigh sometimes can become fun. Rather than relegating him forever to the friend zone because you didn’t pop a boner, open your mind to the possibilities. Watch porn and fool around with decreasingly hairy guys until you bust a nut with a smooth one. Hey, Daddy!

HEY,

Daddy! Hey, Daddy! In bed, I just want to give head while he whacks me off. While most guys see it as a precursor to drive toward the booty, I’m headed downtown to 69th Street, and that’s where the train stops. Am I a freak? Can’t Resist A Zealous Yank

I got bombarded with hateful messages just because my Grindr profile says, “No Fats, No Femmes, No Blacks. No Browns.” I have nothing against these people, but I don’t want to have sex with them. Is that so wrong? Bitch Isn’t About to Suck Everybody’s Dick Dear BIASED: There is a line between preference and prejudice, and you crossed it. Everyone has a “type,” but writing off entire demographics is rude at best, bigoted at worst. You’ve left zero possibility to ever be attracted to one of “these people.” Knowing what you prefer is one thing; judging him on one trait is another. There’s a word for it, and I imagine your profile detractors used it.

Dear CRAZY: There’s only one rule in life: People are freaks. The trick is realizing that you’re one of them, because the ones who think they’re normal are the biggest sideshows of all.

Imagine going for a certain type but staying open to the chance an off-type hottie might turn your crank. Most of us have fallen for a guy who initially didn’t interest us.

So yes you’re a freak, but not for this. Everyone has sexual preferences – and I don’t mean your sexual orientation, which is your penchant for penis. In fact, you enjoy the D so much, you want it in your face when you blow your load. Makes perfect sense.

In your profile, try praising things you like instead of profiling things you don’t. Then again, if conscious bigotry is motivating you, keep your profile as is – so the rest of us can swipe left on you.

Never assume “most guys” are interested in any one thing. Be clear about your preferences, and you’ll find guys to join you for the ride. You could learn to enjoy other positions and develop other predilections, but if you’re satisfied, stay the course and forget other people’s expectations.

Daddy loves his boys. He knows the answers you need, and you’re going to get them. Reach out to him with your burning questions via our editor, mike@davidatlanta.com. Warning: Advice given in this column is intended for entertainment and novelty purposes. Please proceed at your own risk.

LIBRA (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22):

The prevailing tone is a mix of conflicting energies that might put some stress on your heart. It's nothing you can't handle. Tap into your aggressiveness and act boldly toward the object of your desire.

Forces may be pulling on you from all angles, and your challenge will be to maintain a healthy balance among all of them. Accomplish a great deal by directing your energies outward instead of inward.

You may find yourself in the position of arbiter simply because you have the detached mind that people need to resolve disputes. Take an active role in the lives of those around you.

You may be tempted to shift into high gear this week, but you're likely to be unsure where to focus your energy. Don’t retreat into a hole. Dress up and show off your outer as well as inner beauty.

There's apt to be tension between your heart and your general mood. There's enough love to go around. Don't feel like you need to be possessive in order to maintain others' loyalty.

You will discover that it's easy to start up new projects this week, especially those involving creative or romantic elements. The tricky part will be follow-through. This is your specialty, so don't worry about it.

BITCH Bitch SESSION

S E S S I O N

One look and I can tell someone’s therapist knows all about you.

JEALOUSY is a disease, and by the looks of those gritted teeth, you are about to die of it.

You told everyone we had a one-night stand. No. It was an audition, and you didn’t get a callback. HONEY, YOUR HATERS ARE IMAGINARY. NO ONE IS EVEN THINKING ABOUT YOU. WE’RE JUST LIKE THE ALPHABET.

I COME BEFORE U.

AND RESTAURANT SERVERS. PAY ATTENTION TO THE OLD GUYS. THAT'S WHERE THE MONEY IS.

COME ON, LIFE! I’M TOO PRETTY FOR THIS SHIT! HEY, BIG MOUTH ON PIEDMONT: I’m about to relocate that nose you’ve been sticking in my business.

YOU’VE GOT SO MANY WHORE MOANS, YOU COULD OFFER LOW T RELIEF.
