NAUGHTY LIST

With nothing but a Speedo, some tinsel and a smile, hundreds of runners including a big gay contingent raise money by running amok through the streets of Midtown to benefit CHRIS 180.

The guys writing into Hey Daddy this week have a onetrack mind. No, not that. See when obsession turns to stalking, and when memories of an ex won’t die because you didn’t deal with it.

PALS HOLIDAY BINGO

ARMORETTES CHRISTMAS VACATION

TRIPPS CHRISTMAS PARTY

Few things in gay Atlanta are more beloved than Pets Are Loving Support and its mission to help critically ill people keep and care for their pets. One of the most fun ways to help is PALS Bingo. Drag queens call the balls and entertain while you line up dobs for prizes.

When gay Atlanta’s camp queens with hearts of gold get together, it’s always a party. Add the holidays, and best step back and make room. The monthly backroom show goes big with a seasonal story sure to tickle your funny bone and raise funds for those in need.

Food, friends and fun are the name of the game when this neighborhood bar does it up extra for the holidays and its loyal customers. There’s a reason their motto is “friends can hang at Tripps.” Join the crowd for a Very Merry Christmas with specials galore and all the gang.

Just like that,it came and went, and I felt right back at home with my brothers. I don’t know many of my LGBTQIA friends that have a mainly heterosexual inner circle, but I learned to appreciate them early on. In my experience,e my brothers gave me the greatest gift: normality. They weren’t like so many others who asked invading questions, making bold remarks and backing up to cover their ground, or my favorite question, “Are you the girl?” I did get occasional questions, but they were mainly like “when are you going to bring a man around?”

My Straight Bromances By Michael Chisholm

ONE GAY MAN GIVES THANKS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON FOR THE GIFTS HE GETS FROM AN ALMOST COMPLETELY STRAIGHT INNER CIRCLE. THE HOLIDAYS ARE SETTLING IN, and it’s the time of year when you reflect on what you’re thankful for. For many people, that means family, friends, health or anything that blesses them with the warm feeling of fulfillment. I have a laundry list of the people to be thankful for in my life. Like so many others, my ambitious family, from which I can never escape, is at the top. But outside my immediate family, I have a second family. My second family is a very special group of young men who I consider brothers in all things except for blood. I took note as I got older and came into my own that I did not have many close 18 | 12.14.16

LGBTQIA friends in my metro Atlanta, or at least not that I knew of. I wasn’t avoiding the culture, I simply had grown up in a small Southern city on the outskirts of the capital. Oddly enough, I was blessed with Southern gentlemen, but I managed to forge a brotherhood out of this odd setup. I HID MY SEXUALITY FROM THEM until I was 18 and realized that I had to tell them to prove I really trusted them. So one hot summer night, I let them know. To my utter surprise, they exclaimed, “Dude, we’ve known for years.” I was blown away. These good ol’ boys with a love of football, hunting, shooting at the gun range, and beer and whiskey treated it as normal as they would any daily event.

BEING THE BROS THEY ARE, HOWEVER, there was no shortage of insults or typical aggression that you would expect from siblings, which made them ever more endearing. The biggest question I got from them as my friends was, “Are you just trying to get in their pants?” Besides making me feel normal for just being me, they taught me how to relax. These are the kind of men who fall flat on their face laugh it off and keep going. They all come from “hard work with your bare hands” jobs and want nothing more when we’re all together than to pour a whiskey and coke and just sit with great company. The ability to just let go of the stress of the week is truly a gift, and they inspire me to aspire for that level of ‘chill’ every day. I JUST LAUGH WHEN PEOPLE CLEARLY don’t understand the concept of unconditional friendship and the love I possess for my brothers. I’m closer with them than most of my family, and the fact that I really have very little in common with them just means I have nothing to hide from them. We have the luxury and treat of having nothing to prove to one another…other than who wins at beer pong. Michael Chisholm is a freelance writer living in Atlanta. Reach him via this magazine.

Homo Home for the HOLIDAYS By Mike Fleming

From throwing a big gay party to making your own celebration cozy, try these tips and tricks for making your place super fabulous.

If you are looking to make the season bright with cocktails, food and décor but wouldn’t know your Martha Stewart spray from a stick in the ground, these ideas are for you. Gathering your gays is always such a warm idea until you realize that other than wanting to get together, you are having trouble making it special. What’s more, you may not have the funds, the time, or that branch of the gay gene to make it as special as your guests deserve. Fear not. These tips are easy and affordable and will make you the belle of your own ball.

FROZEN FAB

PUNCH IT

BUFFET BOYS

Drop a few berries in the tray before you make ice to make every cocktail more festive. Cranberries are seasonally accurate, but already frozen mixed berries add variety.

Cider, mulled wine, and punch are great for groups. Add star anise and cinnamon sticks to the bowl for extra flavor and a great look.

Unless you are a sit-down dinner kind of person with all those skills to pull it off, give yourself a break and do buffet-style, even potluck. Nothing looks more inviting than a table full of food.

22 | 12.14.16

BUBBLY

DRINK UP

Nothing says “celebration” like champagne. While the “real” stuff is pricey, sparkling wines like Christalino are as low as $7 a bottle. Drop frozen berries or limes in the flutes like the ice above, or add straight cranberry juice to make Poinsettias and stretch your supply.

Stock up on sodas and mixers, one bottle of your favorite three hard liquors, and a couple bottles of red and white. Tell others to bring what they want to drink. Coffee, cocoa and a selection of teas is a nice touch, and if you have alcohol, consider providing a way home.

SIMPLE SIGHTS

NICE BASKET

You don’t need garland on every bough and baubles on every surface. Place a wreath or bow on the door, pump music into the air, limit tablescapes to the buffet and entry, and call it done.

Turn a shallow basket or tray into a fun arrangement with that’s tuff that’s readily available, like moss, pinecones, rocks, or fruits.

ROLL ONE UP

TIE ONE ON

Turn holiday-theme wrapping paper into tabletop displays. Cut and fold into cone "trees" of different sizes, stick with double-sided tape, and voila.

Anyone can tie a single ornament on a ribbon or yarn, hang at varying heights, and create a memorable window display.

SMELLS LIKE CHRISTMAS

DÉCOR ON A DIME

For an inexpensive, fragrant and long lasting decoration, put sprigs of rosemary in coordinated or mismatched containers. Or bundle thyme, rosemary and marjoram in vases. You can even use them for cooking after they dry.

Fill bowls, vases and serving trays with inexpensive Christmas ornaments, evergreen twigs, or twinkle lights. You can group them by color for a chic look, or mix them up to make a splash. Hang small ornaments on a bare branch.

NIGHTLIFE STALWART CELEBRATES ITS QUARTER-CENTURY MARK WITH A HUGE BLOWOUT DANCE PARTY Little in gay Atlanta has the staying power to last 25 years. Luckily for every club cub in town, Cheshire Bridge fixture the Heretic is one of those mainstays. The bar known for its weekly man-on-man dance parties, friendly staff, dedicated ownership, and the most diverse roster of parties in town celebrates its 25th anniversary this Saturday. On tap to open is local favorite DJ Mike Pope, and taking over late night for the main event is the one and only circuit party legend DJ Tony Moran, who flies in special for the occasion. “Heretic has been a staple in gay dance music for almost as long as I have,” Moran tells David Atlanta (Read more with Moran on the next page). “With the closings of so many of our country's leading big room gay clubs in recent years, it’s encouraging to know that at least one of the icons remains.” Alan Collins, general manager with partner and owner Ray Collins, agrees that there’s something about Heretic that makes it special. “We try really hard and keep changing with the times while still staying true to what the Heretic is – a fun place for everybody,” Collins says. And when he says everybody, he really means it. “We host daytime and beer bust events for softball, country dancing every week, alternative queer parties every month, Atlanta Bear Pride, Ready 4 Hope, outdoor beach parties, drag shows, even women’s throwback parties to when the building location was a lesbian bar before it was Heretic.” But even a commitment to diversity isn’t the whole story of Heretic’s success. Collins credits the loyal patrons with most of the magic. It’s been a long time since 1991, but one thing has remained the same.

by Mike Fleming

“We’re so fortunate in Atlanta to have such an amazing community,” Collins says. “Atlanta guys are genuinely good people who really know how to have a good time. We love all our opportunities to show thousands of people from around the country some Southern hospitality.” Add to that guest stars known internationally in the DJ booth and on stage, and Heretic is the stuff local gay dreams are made of.

As for the rest of the Moodswings, Moran is excited to share the whole two-volume collection in January. The two volumes are the down-temp Feel, and the high-energy Move. They feature 14 original dance songs and 14 original pop, R&B and alternative productions, sung by Tony’s favorite vocalists including Martha Wash and Kimberly Davis. Speaking of guest stars, this week’s David cover boy Tony Moran hits Atlanta with a headful of steam behind his latest projects. That success is Moran’s current single “Say Yes” from his upcoming Moodswings album. As we spoke about Heretic, he found out it’s a Billboard No. 1. The dance track, written by two-time Grammy nominated Moran and Mike Greenly, features the vocals of Out Music Award winner Jason Walker. The hard-pounding single is already getting its due with remixes by some other big names in New York and beyond. Walker and Moran previously collaborated on the singles “Set It Free” and this summer’s “So Happy.” Both of those reached No. 1 also. “Even before ‘So Happy’ hit the top spot, I knew I wanted Jason on the ‘Say Yes,’” Moran says. “Jason has a magical voice that exudes power. He’s an incredible talent and someone that I truly believe represents the future of dance music.”

26 | 12.14.16

And speaking of collaborations, Tony connected in-person with amazing collaborators for Moodswings like songwriters Mike Greenly, Nicki Richards, Matt Zarley, Phil McKenna, and former American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi. He also enlists a select stable of vocalists, including the aforementioned Walker, plus Ryan Shaw and Zhana Roiya, who was a background singer for Mary J Blige, Bette Midler and P. Diddy. “We have a strong belief in each other’s talents,” Tony explains. “The entire album has allowed me to explore a wide range of ideas I believe in. I have discovered that whether a song is down-tempo or high energy, the overall theme of all of my music is love. Music is love. No matter what mood a person is in, music has the power to sweep us down to the deepest lows and swing us back up to the highest heights. “My goal with music and in life is always to end high,” he says. “I can’t wait to celebrate 25 years of Heretic.” Tony Moran headlines Heretic’s 25th anniversary event on Dec. 17. Lips

puckers up for the holidays

ATLANTA’S PREMIER DINNER-AND-DRAG VENUE GOES FULL-EXTRAVAGANZA FOR LIMITED-RUN HOLIDAY SHOWS EACH WEEK IN DECEMBER. by Mike Fleming There’s only one place where you can get dinner and a show quite like the ones at Lips Atlanta. Now the club decks its halls in holiday drag for a whole new bag in a limited run this month. “The Holiday Spectacular will be every Wednesday in December,” says co-host and Atlanta legend Bubba D. Licious. “In addition to our usual glitz and glam, Lips is beautifully decorated for the holidays. The show will include some of the most popular holiday songs and fabulous costumes for the season.” Bubba, who appears as Mrs. Claus reading her hilarious version of "Twas the Night Before Christmas," co-hosts the holiday special with the one and only Monica VanPelt. “And after the show, we play several rounds of Bitchy Bingo, with great prizes for the winners,” Bubba adds.

28 | 12.14.16

Sounds like they just upped the game on their already popular Wednesday lineup. We got the scoop as the club wraps another successful year and heads into 2017 with nothing but wind in its sales for a great new year. David Atlanta: We love Lips! What's new over there since we visited you last, and who do you have up your sleeves for the New Year? Bubba D. Licious: New cast members added this year include Brooke Davis, Dynisty St. James, Y'Marie Santiago, and Jeffreion Dickerson. Aliya Holmes & Angelica D'Paige returned to the cast, and beginning next month, Edie Cheezburger will be joining the cast. What is your favorite part of the experience at Lips that regular customers still might not know about? Lips can host company parties, private events & holiday parties for groups of 20 to 200, and we offer a variety of menu options for clients to choose from.

Lips can also design special shows to include your favorite performers, music, or whatever you desire. If someone out there hasn’t been to Lips yet, what would you tell them to knock them off the fence and come try it? Lips has a great menu of specialty drinks, like the Lips Frozen Cosmo, the Frozen Peach Margarita, and a "Kick the Bitch to the Curb." We also have a variety of delicious appetizers, and our entrée menu offers something for everyone. The Show Palace is a beautiful setting, and the shows are the best in town. Anything I've asked that you'd like to say to our readers about the holidays and beyond? Gather your friends and celebrate a birthday or any special occasion. Lips Atlanta is located at 3011 Buford Hwy NE in Brookhaven. Visit lipsatl.com.

diffuse the situation. He’s not leading you on. He’s trying to manage and appease your emotions so that it doesn’t escalate into something more scary and dangerous. His actions are telling you all you need to know, so listen carefully: You haven’t gone out or hooked up in years. You are not even ex boyfriends. He ignores your frantic texts after standing you up repeatedly. He isn’t going to wake up tomorrow and realize you should be together. I’m glad you acknowledge the pattern of behavior on both sides, because you should repeat it to a professional who can really help. You are obsessed, and should treat it like an addiction. Start by accepting that you’ve wasted years and immeasurable emotional energy on this guy.

HEY,

Daddy! Hey, Daddy! I am a gay man who’s into the wrong man. A few years ago, I met a special guy, and we went out a few times. We hooked up for a booty call a few times after that. Now he keeps bailing on me. He responds when I contact him, but he never contacts me on his own. It’s always the same thing: He agrees to meet. He backs out at the last minute or stands me up. I cry and go off on voicemail or text, and he ignores me. Days later, I feel bad for freaking out and have to be the one to apologize. Recently after he stood me up, I’d had enough. I went to his house after midnight, and it was, well, bad. I know it was wrong, but I’m sick of his mixed messages. I can’t break this hold he has on me. How can I make him stop leading me on? Stop Taking Advantage & Literally Killing Earnest Recourse

You might also try confiding in trusted friends to hold you accountable. Have them check in and ask you how it’s going as you go through recovery. If you don’t have anyone like that, maybe check out a Reddit group called “No Contact.” Members there support each other in going cold-turkey from exes and other objects of affection they shouldn’t ever see. There is no easy or quick solution to any addiction, so commit to a long-term solution sooner rather than later. Hey, Daddy! My ex was a total asshole, but I can’t stop thinking about him. It’s been a year since I made a clean break got away from his lies and emotional abuse, but for some reason part of me still longs for him. I’m talking to a sweet new guy now, but I can’t focus completely because this nagging voice won’t let him go. I know I should ignore it, but I can’t. My Own Voice Enables Other Notions Dear MOVE ON: There’s no such thing as a clean break. Just because you know you “should” look ahead, it’s not always easy. Acknowledge unresolved issues from the relationship, and allow yourself to work through the emotions. Grieve. Where there’s closure, there’ll be peace.

Daddy

Dear STALKER: You know that old saying, “It’s not him, it’s you”? Well it’s you, and that can be a hard thing to accept.

Daddy loves his boys. He knows the answers you need, and you’re going to get them. Reach out to him with your burning questions via our editor, mike@davidatlanta.com.

What you are doing is unhealthy for you and damaging to the other guy. What you call mixed messages sound more like attempts to

Even when working on organizing minutiae, don’t let yourself get too caught up in details. Keep an eye on the larger picture. Ideals are ultimately more important that short-term gains. You may need to sacrifice a battle to achieve victory.

Worries about mortality or the meaning of life can make you too eager to figure it all out now. Talking it out with a good friend raises more questions than answers. That’s good, honest and real. Relax! Nobody ever gets all the answers.

Getting more physical and less cerebral can help you live a more balanced life, but don’t lose your head completely! Instant gratification can be a distraction from meeting your real needs. With thoughtful planning you can achieve the latter.

Start work on recent relationship problems. Easy does it. You may feel stuck at first. That will pass. Evaluate your patience and commitment and your partner’s, but save that information for a later decision.

Looking too far ahead can trip you up. Hone your expertise on details that need immediate attention. It may take some effort to be diplomatic, especially at work. Criticism is best focused on oneself. Be gentle and considerate with whoever your target is.

Playing too hard can hurt friendships and your reputation. Striving for a personal best is better than crushing your opponents. Focusing on technique and personal accomplishment, rather than beating others, also helps you at work.

If you really can’t avoid fights at home at least make an effort to listen, learn and seriously consider other viewpoints little as you may like them. It will all make sense later. The best solutions may come slowly. Be patient!

Pessimism and striving for control feed into each other, driving away those you love. Make a list of your priorities and another of your spiritual, social and material assets. Some problems you can solve. Others you just need to let go of.

Trying too hard to be a big shot only guarantees you’ll never be one. Focus on modesty, self-awareness and letting your hard work speak for itself. Be eager to learn from criticism. With criticism or praise, consider the source.

Knowing your worth and inner strength should make you generous and kind. Being mature, thoughtful and aesthetically conservative can help you get ahead. Being smug, prim and attached to position will only bring you down.

Difficult family secrets can leave you wondering who you really are. Analyzing sibling rivalry can shed some light on the mystery. Feeling lost is the admission that leads to finding your true self.

Be mature, open-minded and philosophical; you might be able to avoid arguments that threaten your relationships and career. You don’t have to like, accept, or agree with everything you hear, but the less you like it the more you should consider it.
