HOW TO KEEP THOSE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

YOUR NEW BEGINNING IS GOING TO REQUIRE A NEW ATTITUDE – AND THIS PATHWAY TO SUCCESS. BY MIKE FLEMING 20 | 1.4.17

Gay men can slack and give ourselves too many breaks, while alternately being too hard on ourselves at the same time. Neither of those is good for making a resolution stick. Hurtling into another year convinced that turning the calendar means turning over a new leaf? It’s time to learn to once and for all navigate those New Year’s Resolution twists, turns, bumps and byways to making a better you. Lasting change follows a well-worn path, from the initial “Commit to it,” all the way to “Fuck it” or “Keep it.” Ready? Set. Go!

COMMIT.

SETBACK ACCEPTANCE.

Promises to yourself can be the most difficult to keep. The key is to be realistic. Pick one goal, not several, and break it down into doable pieces. Start with an easier mini-step as Goal No. 1 by April, the next step by August, etc.

If you were realistic, and you were because you’re listening, you knew this time would come. Don’t hate on yourself, but don’t ignore it either. Think it through, learn a lesson, and adjust. Vow to do just a little better next time. Perfection is the enemy of good.

FANTASIZE.

REWARDS.

Visualization is a great tool. Daydream about how awesome life is with your new behavior, and be specific. What does it look and feel like? Again, be realistic and think small-and-growing.

Now comes the fun part. Every time you resist a cigarette or forego dessert, or improve your performance at the gym, celebrate. Mindfully acknowledging success trades hard work with positive feelings. Mark every progress and enjoy it.

RESEARCH.

FORCE OF HABIT.

New You is worth an investment. Buy a book about your resolved area of interest, or splurge on a fun accessory to complement the new you. Then put it to good use: A headful of technique and cute workout gear aren’t exercise.

Before your resolution is second nature, permanent habits are made by a series of decisions. Force it even when you don’t feel like it. Remind yourself that you’ll be glad you did it, and get off your ass. Then celebrate that you did.

ROADBLOCKS.

KEEP IT, TWEAK IT, OR FUCK IT.

Self-doubt is going to happen. You can and should admit it so you can plan for it. Be ready to nip negative thoughts in the bud and force yourself not to wallow in the mire.

Eventually, new habits mean that you have internalized the behavior. Look how far you’ve come. Reassess if it’s working the way you wanted, needs adjustments, or truly not worth doing anymore. Think about your next goal! Return to “Commit” and repeat. davidatlanta.com | 21

What is TRUVADA for PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis)? TRUVADA is a prescription medicine that can be used for PrEP to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 infection when used together with safer sex practices. This use is only for adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1 through sex. This includes HIV-negative men who have sex with men and who are at high risk of getting infected with HIV-1 through sex, and male-female sex partners when one partner has HIV-1 infection and the other does not. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to prevent getting HIV-1. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION What is the most important information I should know about TRUVADA for PrEP?

Before taking TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce your risk of getting HIV-1 infection: u You must be HIV-negative. You must get tested to make sure that you do not already have HIV-1 infection. Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 unless you are confirmed to be HIV-negative. u Many HIV-1 tests can miss HIV-1 infection in a person who has recently become infected. If you have flu-like symptoms, you could have recently become infected with HIV-1. Tell your healthcare provider if you had a flu-like illness within the last month before starting TRUVADA for PrEP or at any time while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Symptoms of new HIV-1 infection include tiredness, fever, joint or muscle aches, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, night sweats, and/or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or groin. While taking TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce your risk of getting HIV-1 infection: u You must continue using safer sex practices. Just taking TRUVADA for PrEP may not keep you from getting HIV-1. u You must stay HIV-negative to keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP. u To further help reduce your risk of getting HIV-1: • Know your HIV-1 status and the HIV-1 status of your partners. • Get tested for HIV-1 at least every 3 months or when your healthcare provider tells you. • Get tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Other infections make it easier for HIV-1 to infect you. • Get information and support to help reduce risky sexual behavior. • Have fewer sex partners. • Do not miss any doses of TRUVADA. Missing doses may increase your risk of getting HIV-1 infection. • If you think you were exposed to HIV-1, tell your healthcare provider right away. u If you do become HIV-1 positive, you need more medicine than TRUVADA alone to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time.

TRUVADA can cause serious side effects:

u Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis),

which is a serious medical emergency. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, nausea, vomiting, stomach-area pain, cold or blue hands and feet, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, and/or fast or abnormal heartbeats. u Serious liver problems. Your liver may become large and tender, and you may develop fat in your liver. Symptoms of liver problems include your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, and/or stomach-area pain. u You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or serious liver problems if you are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking TRUVADA for a long time. In some cases, these serious conditions have led to death. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any symptoms of these conditions. u Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. If you also have HBV and take TRUVADA, your hepatitis may become worse if you stop taking TRUVADA. Do not stop taking TRUVADA without first talking to your healthcare provider. If your healthcare provider tells you to stop taking TRUVADA, they will need to watch you closely for several months to monitor your health. TRUVADA is not approved for the treatment of HBV.

Who should not take TRUVADA for PrEP?

Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you already have HIV-1 infection or if you do not know your HIV-1 status. If you are HIV-1 positive, you need to take other medicines with TRUVADA to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you also take lamivudine (Epivir-HBV) or adefovir (HEPSERA).

What are the other possible side effects of TRUVADA for PrEP? Serious side effects of TRUVADA may also include:

u Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare

provider may do blood tests to check your kidneys before and during treatment with TRUVADA for PrEP. If you develop kidney problems, your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking TRUVADA for PrEP. u Bone problems, including bone pain or bones getting soft or thin, may lead to fractures. Your healthcare provider may do tests to check your bones. u Changes in body fat, which can happen in people taking TRUVADA or medicines like TRUVADA. Common side effects in people taking TRUVADA for PrEP are stomach-area (abdomen) pain, headache, and decreased weight. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that bother you or do not go away.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking TRUVADA for PrEP? u All your health problems. Be sure to tell your healthcare

provider if you have or have had any kidney, bone, or liver problems, including hepatitis virus infection.

Please see Important Facts about TRUVADA for PrEP including important warnings on the following pages.

u If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not

known if TRUVADA can harm your unborn baby. If you become pregnant while taking TRUVADA for PrEP, talk to your healthcare provider to decide if you should keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Pregnancy Registry: A pregnancy registry collects information about your health and the health of your baby. There is a pregnancy registry for women who take medicines to prevent HIV-1 during pregnancy. For more information about the registry and how it works, talk to your healthcare provider. u If you are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. The medicines in TRUVADA can pass to your baby in breast milk. If you become HIV-1 positive, HIV-1 can be passed to the baby in breast milk.

u All the medicines you take, including prescription and over-

the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. TRUVADA may interact with other medicines. Keep a list of all your medicines and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. u If you take certain other medicines with TRUVADA for PrEP, your healthcare provider may need to check you more often or change your dose. These medicines include ledipasvir with sofosbuvir (HARVONI). You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.FDA.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

quires work (yuck), patience (I want it now), and being at least somewhat pragmatic (so basic). Ugh. Am I right? Most of us have an understanding of what it means to work and to be patient, even if we don’t enjoy doing either. When it comes to resolutions, lack of pragmatism is the likely culprit behind our failures. Without even realizing it, we shoot ourselves in both feet before we even reach the starting line. BUT DON’T FRET CHILDREN. THERE’S a simple fix and it only involves a small amount of homework. Ask three questions about Each Resolution:

RESOLUTIONS WITHIN REASON BY JAMES PARKER SHEFFIELD

BREAK THE CYCLE OF FAILED NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS BY STARTING ON THE RIGHT FOOT. THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT THE changing of a calendar that brings out the “New Year, New Me” thoughts. We weren’t good enough in the last year, but we’re committed to change this year. We. Are. Going. To. Crush. It. Those six-pack abs, that higher paying job, and a new husband are just around the corner. We are going to be so hot for Joining Hearts 2017. January is all about business. We feel good about it. Then there’s February. WE OFTEN FORGET ABOUT February. That’s when writing the correct date on paperwork becomes easier, but remembering promises to 26 | 1.4.17

ourselves becomes more difficult. There’s plenty of time to go to the gym… next week. Fast forward to June, when resolutions are distant memories and we begin daydreaming about next year. Everything will be better then. Our dedication will rival Leo DiCaprio letting a bear attack him, so he could finally win an Oscar. If none of this sounds familiar, because you’re a robot and champion of life, feel free to stop reading. But if you’re a human tired of this brand of “wash, rinse, repeat,” here’s some perspective: Our New Year’s resolutions are only as achievable as we make them. Ah yes, that terrible truth that success re-

Is this a specific action item? For instance, “Lose 100lbs” is not a specific action item. It’s a goal that requires action items to accomplish. List all steps to reach the goal, then pick a few things and make those items your actual resolutions. Could I really accomplish this within a year? Be honest. For example: Mark and John both want to be more politically active in 2017. Currently, Mark’s email signature includes his preferred pronouns, and he canvassed during the election. John asked “When is voting day?” while showing off his “Nasty Woman” t-shirt. It’s reasonable for Mark’s resolution to be, “Volunteer for a Capitol Lobby Day,” but John may want to start with something like, “Locate news on channel guide: Watch.” Why am I doing this? Seriously. Resolutions about anything other than what you really want are generally doomed. If you’re getting a trainer, because that cute barista only talks to fit boys, well… We’ll look forward to seeing you at the Colonnade in a few weeks. Some resolutions just shouldn’t be on your list to start with. Asking why will help eliminate those items. In contrast, if your resolution is to quit smoking, because you don’t like the way it makes you feel, it’s too expensive, and your doctor says it’s killing you, you’re likely to at least give it an honest Boy Scout try. Creating change is hard, especially when it comes to bad habits or an issue we’ve struggled with for years. Being clear about why you’re doing it can help provide motivation to reach the finish line.

the light on some of the queer community’s most underrepresented – yet most fabulous – members: gay and transgender men of color who stage and compete in elaborate cross-dressing pageants. According to our voters, Paris gets 10’s across the board.

Greenwich Village. We also recommend the documentaries Before Stonewall and After Stonewall.

GAY SEX IN THE ‘70S Focusing its steamed-up lens on the period between when the Stonewall Rebellion liberated New York City’s gay community and AIDS brought it to its knees, Joseph F. Lovett’sgleefully hedonistic doc is a fascinating look at a sexual revolution unlike any other. Mustaches, machismo, and muscles abound.

SMALL TOWN GAY BAR Filmmaker Kevin Smith (Chasing Amy, Red State) produced this documentary by Malcolm Ingram exploring the culture of gay bars in the rural American South. The film chronicles the gay communities struggling for acceptance in the shadow of overwhelmingly conservative landscapes, and the refuge that their gay bars provide. They also have a heck of a good time. 30 | 1.4.17

OUTRAGE Straight documentary provocateur Kirby Dick (This Film Is Not Yet Rated) turns his lens on the destructive hypocrisies of closeted gay politicians who lobby for anti-gay legislation in the United States in this 2009 film. THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK Decades before Sean Penn earned an Oscar for playing him, Rob Epstein’s Oscar-winning 1984 documentary honored the life of Harvey Milk, California’s first openly gay elected official. Using both archival footage and original interviews, the film chronicles Milk’s rise from a Castro Street activist to his assassination at the hands of rival politician Dan White.

PARAGRAPH 175 Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman co-directed this 2000 film chronicling the lives of the handful of known survivors of Germany’s Paragraph 175, the sodomy provision of the penal code that led to over 100,000 men being arrested and imprisoned or sent to concentration camps between 1933 and 1945. Rupert Everett narrates this harrowing and essential look at one of the darkest times in history for gays and lesbians.

THE CELLULOID CLOSET Based on gay activist and media critic Vito Russo’s groundbreaking book, Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s Peabody Award-winning documentary examines homosexuality in American film from the classics of Old Hollywood to New Queer Cinema, as well as the struggles of gay and lesbian filmmakers and stars. Choice clips from touchstone films and interviews with Hollywood allies like Susan Sarandon and Whoopi Goldberg make Closet an informative and wonderfully entertaining landmark in the study of gay visibility in entertainment.

someone else, and I could relate. I wanted to be the straight guy I had tried to be, but I had failed. The line “All we have to do now/ Is take these lies and make them true somehow.” I wanted to do that, but I knew I couldn’t live a lie, although I sure did try. I was afraid of what my family would say, friends, co-workers, church … everyone. I realized that I couldn’t change, and began to believe that I shouldn’t have to. A great therapist helped me figure out what was right for me: To tell everyone, including my Southern Baptist family.

‘FREEDOM’ THROUGH SONG BY BUCK C. COOKE

WE ALL GOT A PIECE OF GEORGE MICHAEL’S ‘FREEDOM.’ HERE’S HOW HE TOUCHED SO MANY LGBT LIVES. LIKE SO MANY, I WAS STRUCK by the death of George Michael on Christmas Day. For me, this wasn’t just another case of ‘80s nostalgia. Yes, I loved the music. It would provide the soundtrack to my coming out and impact the rest of my life. His first solo album, Faith, coincided with a seismic shift in my awareness of other men, and his videos resonated with my closeted self – along with a visceral love for the singles “I Want Your Sex” and “Monkey.” On his sophomore album Listen Without Prejudice, Volume One, one track further developed the seeds of my self-awareness: “Freedom! ’90” 34 | 1.4.17

Initially, I thought it was a really fun song. As I came out to myself, I marveled at the lyrics – words I had been singing at the top of my lungs for years – and began to understand their meaning: I think there’s something you should know I think it’s time I told you so There’s something deep inside of me There’s someone else I’ve got to be IT BECAME SO OBVIOUS THAT THIS was Michael’s way of coming out, even if he didn’t “officially” do it for some time. I had said “I’m gay” to myself, but I was terrified of others finding out, so “Freedom! ’90” became even more powerful. Michael wrote that he wanted to be

I think there’s something you should know I think it’s time I stopped the show There’s something deep inside of me There’s someone I forgot to be I DID NOT EVER ANT TO FORGET WHO I was, even if telling my parents scared me. I had to be honest, like they taught me: “Tell the truth. You can talk to us. We love you.” I knew not telling them was causing me extreme anguish. I struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts and was afraid of what would happen if I didn’t take this stone from around my neck. Keeping that part of me a secret was literally killing me. May not be what you want from me Just the way it’s got to be Lose the face now I’ve got to live, I’ve got to live Right there in front of me was one of my favorite songs telling me that I could alleviate my suffering. MICHAEL SUFFERED A GREAT DEAL IN life, but his work unlocked a profound truth – that I could be a happy gay man wwas open and free. I’ll be forever grateful for the freedom about which he sang. I won’t let you down I will not give you up Got to have some faith in the sound It’s the one good thing that I’ve got I won’t let you down Please don’t give me up ‘Cause I would really love to stick around Oh yeah Thanks to your music, George, you’ll always stick around. Rest in peace.

WHETHER YOU’RE DRESSING UP YOUR iPHONE OR ACCENTUATING YOUR ANDROID, THESE GADGETS WILL DEEPEN YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR PHONE. Last week, we covered what smartphones were good alternatives for those with iPhone Yawn Syndrome. This week, we look at smartphone accessories for everyone. That’s right, the following devices will work on iPhone and Android devices alike, so it’s a geek party for all!

ALL DOLLED UP IN TECHCCESSORIES BY CHRIS VIZZINI

SAMSUNG GEAR S3 Samsung’s latest smartwatch/ fitness tracker is a great choice, because it actually looks like a nice watch rather than a boxy computer strapped to your wrist, while still packing lots of features. A rotating bezel around the watch face acts as navigation for the system, alleviating troubles if your fingers are on the thicker side and hitting small icons on a watch face proves challenging. You can also make and receive calls directly from the Gear S3 with a slight twist of the bezel, never having to touch your phone. A handy feature if your arms are full or your phone is across the room. With the S Health companion app, you pair your phone with the S3 to auto-detects exercise, or tap the S Health icon on the watch to choose from a well-covered range of activities. The sensors have your activities covered with GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer, HRM and an ambient light sensor for self-adjusting screen brightness. It also tracks your sleep. Don’t worry about battery life, either. If you stay the night at your boyfriend’s house, you’ll get 2.5 to three days per charge. There’s also dust and water resistance up to five feet for up to a half an hour, so no worries if you get dunked in a pool. Suggestion: Look at replacement bands out of the box for the Classic model, which comes with a rather thick leather band. The sportier Frontier model’s band should suit most. They both take standard watch bands. FRONTIER

THE LG 360 CAM This is a fun little gadget if you want to play with taking 360-degree photo and video. While it’s not the newest, it is a capable solid device that won’t break the bank at $99.

UE BOOM 2

The unit uses dual 13-megapixel cameras for taking 2K photo and video of all that surrounds you in any direction. The 360 Cam is easily pocketable at just 3.5 inches tall. With the LG companion app, you can remotely trigger the cameras to record or shoot rather than the button. This is awesome for getting nature or cityscapes without your being in the shot. The LG app includes a viewer and the ability to share your creations, but it doesn’t include an editor. However, you can download THETA+Video for free from the app store, which enables you to trim video. Facebook and YouTube both support 360-degree photo and video posting, so spend a few bucks, get creative and share your imagination!

LG 360 CAM

UE BOOM 2 This one premiered late in 2015, but that doesn’t mean it’s outdated. It’s an exceptional Bluetooth speaker that’s water and shock resistant with a long 100-foot range from your phone or tablet. You can connect three devices and take turns playing songs with friends for up to 15 hours thanks to the rechargeable lithium-ion battery. It’s also capable of Google Now Voice and Siri integration. Don’t let the small size fool you. Only seven inches tall and weighing a mere 1.2 pounds, the sound is loud and rich while being ultra-portable. You can connect multiple Booms together for even more sound, up to 50. It’s perfect for watching movies on a tablet, because it transforms meager tablet speakers into a cinema sound experience. The Boom 2 is also great for pool parties, camping or anyplace you’d love to hear awesome sound without the benefit of an outlet. Best of all: The price. The UE Boom 2 on sale at most stores and online retailers for $129. That’s $70 off the regular price of $200.

Dear OBJECT: I get the attraction to the intrigue and drama of this situation, but based on the facts you provided, almost none of this is your problem to handle. It’s on him if he really does have secret feelings for you. It’s also his problem if he made a bad mistake while drunk. Even if he’s actually dealing with something that he can’t face sober, it’s still his issue. In none of these scenarios are you in a position to do anything about it. If he’s actually getting ready to marry a guy while in love with someone else, that’ll ultimately be the other guy’s problem, too, obviously, but there isn’t a single thing you can do to make it better. If you’re close enough, send a noncommittal message like, “Weird text last night. You OK?” If not and he never mentions it, you’ve got a great reason to develop compassionate, selective amnesia.

HEY,

Daddy!

DRUNK-TEXT DEAL BREAKERS Hey, Daddy!

Continue as if it didn’t happen. The text could mean nothing but a case of cold feet. If he doesn’t remember, great. If he does, he’s probably way more embarrassed than you are.

Hey, Daddy! My first friend after we both came out – 20 years ago – has been rubbing me the wrong way for a while now, but he finally sent me a text so offensive that I’m done. I don’t want to talk about it. I don’t want to fix it. I just want him out of my life, but I can’t exactly contact him and say, “Nice knowing you.” Help!

Didn’t Overstate Nasty Egregiousness Dear DONE:

There’s this guy in my circle of gays who I’ve known for several years. He’s recently asked his boyfriend to marry him, and we’re all planning on attending their excursion wedding in the spring. Now he’s sexting me.

Actually, you can do that. Just because it seems awkward, there’s nothing wrong with saying that his comments were so awful that you want to end the friendship.

Yes, really. First I got a dick pic, then I got a series of texts while he was obviously drunk saying he couldn’t stop thinking about me, did I want to come over and blow him, etc. It was embarrassing as hell in the moment, but the long-lasting implications are worse.

Word of warning: Do be sure, because the chance of taking it back is slim. I’ll trust you that it’s irreconcilable, if you’ll trust me that the upstanding thing to do is lay all your cards on the table.

We were in a large group right after the text, and I can’t tell if he was ignoring it or doesn’t even remember it because he was so wasted. This is not one of my closer friends in the group, but he’s definitely someone I’ll see every time I go out. Should I confront him? Say something to the fiancé? Say something to our mutual friends who know him better? I’m at a loss.

Mirror, Mirror on the wall/Vanity leads to a fall. You’ve nothing to prove. Those who don’t love you as you are don’t really matter. Those who do may seem demanding, but rise to the occasion. The challenge will make you stronger.

A break from your past might seem liberating, but remember a tree stands tallest when it has strong roots. You need to criticize and innovate, but build on your past. Even negative examples and painful lessons serve a purpose.

GEMINI (May 21- Jun. 20):

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21):

Some things are better left unsaid or talked around rather than directly addressed. Much as you prefer full frontal frankness, stop and think a bit about what the best strategy really is. However apt, sexual analogies can be more disruptive than helpful.

If you really want to do something nice for your darling, housework is always appreciated. Showing off will just mess it up. Just do with humility whatever’s needed. The less you draw attention, the more it will be appreciated.

CANCER (Jun. 21- Jul. 22):

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19):

Re-affirm (or take a late start on) any New Year’s resolutions about quitting a habit or losing weight. To prioritize and simplify your relationships make three lists: important professional contacts; friends you really care about; the few you’d take on a long retreat.

It’s too easy to feel beat down thinking of where your hard work has not gotten you. Focus instead on what you have accomplished despite tough times. That can lead you to better strategies and more effective use of your resources.

LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22):

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18):

Harsh words with colleagues will come back to haunt you. Putting what needs to be said nicely or handling blowback effectively can be a huge boost to your career. Accept an invitation to something you’d normally never do.

Some quiet down time can do you good, but you’ll soon come out swinging. Starting or joining a provocative family discussion can be very educational; go ahead, stir it up! Bruised feelings will quickly heal.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22):

PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 20):

Your first ideas are likely to be extravagant and wasteful, but don’t let disillusionment stop you. Accept scarcity as a challenge to your creativity. At least you’ll never run out of ideas.

You could be a big hit at a dungeon party. Hitter or hittee? That’s up to you. Personal insights are better explored with a friend you can really trust. You may uncover inner resources you’d never dreamed of.
