Ariana Grande

An intersectional conglomerate of resisters against the current state of political affairs comes together under one beautiful umbrella called Grassroots Activists of Atlanta. Step off downtown with them with the rallying cry, “We are all one force, a force that cannot be broken!”

The men of National Flag Football League of Atlanta continue their spring season pitting the gay jocks of their 10 teams against each other in man-on-man gridiron action each Saturday. Get down to see them play, then play with them afterwards at Blake’s.

No matter which group of “gays of a certain age” you belong to, there is a concert for you this week. Save a Prayer for Duran Duran on Saturday with our Nick Rhodes interview on the following pages, or wait for Wednesday to Break Free with the little girl with the big voice.

GET INTO HIS UNDIES ANDREW CHRISTIAN BRINGS AUSTIN WATIE ALONG FOR AN ATLANTA RIDE WITH SEX POWER FREEDOM. BY MIKE FLEMING Gay underwear designer Andrew Christian is famous not only for his sexy skivvies, but the men he gets to model them in way-too-hot-for-tv online video ads and print campaigns. Then his Sex Power Freedom book features an even more risqué set of images of hot guys doing other hot guys in stark and enthralling black and white (main image above). Now Atlanta’s gay clothing retailer Boy Next Door lets you sample the merchandise up close and personal. And again, by the merchandise, we don’t mean just the titular briefs and other gear, but the man himself and one of his most popular muses Austin Watie (inset photos). If you aren’t already one of his rabid fans, Google Watie for an eyeful. 18 | 4.5.17

Both men will sign copies of the new book at an exclusive event at Boy Next Door on April 14 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. The event includes pics and selfies with the guys, and an autograph session of your very own copy of the Sex Power Freedom Silver Edition. Copies of the book are on sale now at Boy Next Door, and you can bring it for signing at the event. While supplies last, more copies will be available to buy during the event so you can buy it and get it signed all on one night. Andrew Christian and Austin Watie appear April 14, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. with Christian’s Sex Power Freedom book at Boy Next Door, 1447 Piedmont Ave. NE. boynextdoormenswear.com

IN THE NICK OF TIME

NICK RHODES OF DURAN DURAN CHATS ABOUT HEYDAY BRIT POP AND NEW MUSIC AS THE BAND HITS ATLANTA BY GREGG SHAPIRO For Duran Duran’s 2015 studio disc, Paper Gods, the band invited some friends along for the ride, and the ‘80s boybanders from Britan bring an undying energy to their most recent tour, which hits Atlanta this week.

Mark Ronson and Nile Rodgers make “Only In Dreams” dreamy. Duran Duran’s resident keyboard god – and still the OG quintessential dreamboy of straight girls and gay boys of a certain age – Nick Rhodes chats with us about the album, the band’s lifelong queer fans, and so much more. The band plays Chastain Park Amphitheatre on April 8.

That’s 21st century dance diva Kiesza joining Simon Le Bon on lead vocals for “Last Night In The City,” a song perfect the dance-floor. “Pressure Off” Almost 40 years since forming and with features Janelle Monáe and Nile Rodg- 15 albums to the band’s name, what is ers, and delivers on the funk promised the secret to Duran Duran’s longevity? by the presence of both. I’m not quite sure that we have a secret. We never look back is perhaps one of the Jonas Bjerre of Mew pipes is on things. We always keep moving forward. “Change The Skyline,” diva Anna Ross helps “Butterfly Girl” take wing, and 26 | 4.5.17

When people say to me, “Do you realize how long your band’s been together?” I do if I really think about it. Otherwise, I feel like we’re a new band who’s wiped the slate entirely clean and we’re just starting out trying to figure out what we’re going to do with our sound. How does that way of thinking appear in the songwriting process? We have always tried to keep ourselves as pure creatively as we can and to guard our naivete as much as we possibly can, too. I think that’s very valuable to the creative process. Sometimes when you know too much,

NICK RHODES, Continued

That’s an extra bonus! She’s fabulous, and we all adore her and think she’s enormously talented. The band has always had queer fans. What does that following mean to you guys? It means absolutely every bit as much to us as anyone who follows the band. We’ve always had a big gay following and we embrace it very much. You’d probably find it hard to find another band any more liberal than we are. Artists tend to be open and to want everyone in the world to be harmonious and are much more positive about things in our world than a lot of other people. We’re certainly no exception. Given the world that we’re living in now, and even the world that we lived in that was somewhat less aggressive over the past two, three decades, we’ve always felt that it’s an amazing thing to lift people’s spirits in times of darkness. Music has done that for me throughout my life, and I know I can speak for the rest of the band, so part of our mission is to make something that will have a positive emotional effect on people. That’s often a dance song. Sometimes it’s a more thought provoking song like “Ordinary World,” about the state that the world’s in. That song seems to have become more relevant recently. Often we look to the dance floor to help people elevate their spirits. Nick, if you could put one Duran Duran album into a time capsule to be opened in 100 years, which one would it be? I would just put them all into a melting pot and melt them all together. Then I’d scrape them out and make a new album out of the plastic and see what it sounded like. Duran Duran dedicated “Save A Prayer” to George Michael at your Cancun concert. Can you say a few words about him?

then you start to adhere to rules and it takes away your ability to experiment. We’ve somehow quite successfully managed to keep that enthusiasm in the band by having the curiosity and the will to try to find something new every time we write. Paper Gods features collaboration with Kiesza. How did that come about? We knew we wanted a powerful female voice, someone with a lot of energy. We’d been looking and we spoke to our publishers to ask if there was anyone that they’d recommend. They came up with Kiesza. When we listened to “Hideaway,” we thought she was perfect. We had such an uplifting day in the studio, because when you collaborate with someone you also find out that they’re truly lovely human beings.

28 | 4.5.17

It was an enormous shock to everyone. I guess some people closer to him knew that he was suffering from addiction and problems, but we had no idea. It’s heartbreaking to think that yet another gentle soul has left us. Someone who had so much creativity in him. He had an amazing career and a beautiful voice. All of the times that we met him on Top of the Pops, when we were both starting out; he used to come backstage after our shows in the early `80s when he came as a fan. We met many times when he became hugely successful; he was always funny and gracious and gentle. That’s how I remember him.

READY TO

RIDE SELF-PROFESSED ‘CRAZY BIKER DUDE’ CYCLES ACROSS THE EASTER SEABOARD FOR LOST N FOUND YOUTH BY MATTHEW HOLLEY Brainy, brawny and admittedly maybe just a little crazy, good-natured gay Atlantan David Paris is preparing to take to the road on his bike in just a few weeks, traveling from Atlanta up the East Coast with just the bare necessities. The former microbiologist for Coca-Cola is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. “It’ll just be me, a change of clothes and whatever money I have to live off Big Macs,” Paris tells David Atlanta. “They are my favorite.” 36 | 4.5.17

Paris’ love for biking began about a year ago, when he decided he needed a reset. Taking a break from his career, he set out for Florida, biking all over the state with few supplies and help from some friendly strangers. “While on hiatus from work until I get my MBA this fall at University of Georgia, I solo biked 1500 miles around Florida, and it was a great experience,” he explains. “Basically, through Couchsurfing.com, you find like-minded people who are willing to let you crash with them for a day or two. … I was able to get a good night’s sleep and take a much needed shower.”

While surfing from couch to couch in between putting the miles on his bike tires, David was constantly asked one common question: Why are you biking? “For the Florida trip, my initial answer was that I just needed a change and wanted to get out and do something, anything. Now, after such a cool experience, I realized I can turn this next challenge into something even greater. “Growing up gay in Atlanta, I have seen the difficulties that some gay kids face when their families and friends may not understand them,” he adds. “I decided to set up a YouCaring fundraiser in

honor of Lost n Found, Atlanta’s LGBT Youth Shelter.” David’s YouCaring page breaks down what the money from any potential donation is for, why it is needed, and the rewards givers and receivers alike will reap. “There are only two problems in this world,” Paris states. “There are 950 homeless LGBT youth in Atlanta, and I will need to eat an ungodly amount of Big Macs when I bike cross country this spring. “80 percent of the cash given to this campaign will go directly to Lost n Found Youth,” he assures. “The remaining 20 percent will buy as many Big Macs as possible in a desperate attempt to fill the black hole that will be my stomach while I bicycle up the East Coast.”

38 | 4.5.17

Anyone who may doubt the good Samaritan’s sincerity needs only to understand Atlanta’s unyielding need for Lost n Found, he says. “I can attest, being young and gay is a unique and often alienating experience,” Paris says. “Add on top of that the troubles of homelessness – many times caused by coming out – and you can see how having a safe space with people who understand what you’re going through would be super important.” LNF is the only organization providing that space in Atlanta, Paris says. “Their youth center sees hundreds of youth each month and provides emergency housing, meals, counseling, job services, and much more. You should

check out their website to see all the cool stuff they do - Lnfy.org.” At this writing, Paris has raised $1,030 of his $2,000 goal on his YouCaring page @macsauce. “I am grateful for everyone who wants to give back to the community and is excited about the challenge I have set for myself. It really means a lot.” For more information, visit youcaring. com/macsauce. Track the bole journey online at blog- davidderails.wordpress. com, Instagram @fartz5000, or Facebook.com/dparis3.

Opening old wounds early extends your distress. The grieving process is how you move on. Absorb memories and internalize how much the relationship meant to you. Think about why breaking up was the right thing to do. You might try a ritual: Write a letter pouring out the good, bad and ugly. Now – and this step is crucial – don’t send it. Put it and your former relationship away. Or further, burn it and release the past into the air.

Hey, Daddy!

HEY,

DADDY! WORST-EVER BREAKUPS Hey, Daddy! After a year of passionate sex and genuine laughs, we broke up. It was mutual, and it was the right thing to do, but the only person I want to talk to about it is him. Everything reminds me of him. Inside jokes, our show, our place all make me want to text him. I don’t want to get back together, but I miss him. I don’t want to give the wrong impression, but I do want to talk. What should I do?

Truly Admit Loving Kindness Is Never Gone Dear TALKING: What you’re experiencing is grief, and the impulse to talk to him is understandable. But don’t, at least not yet.

My ex and I were together seven years, but the last year was a lie. He cheated repeatedly, promising each time not to do it again. He moved out without discussing what made him do it. I see him at the bars enjoying his singlehood, but I can’t stop wondering what happened. I deserve an explanation. How do I get it?

Couldn’t Handle Even A Talk Explaining Dalliances Dear CHEATED: Wondering what motivates other people is tempting, but futile. There are probably tons of “reasons,” but speculating on theories only delays your recovery. Turn your energy toward the person you can control and who needs your help: You. What would you do differently? Did you put up with it too long? Did you invest in someone who wasn’t earning it? How do you find a man who respects your relationship as much as you do? The closure you seek will come in the form of lessons learned.

DADDY LOVES HIS BOYS He knows the answers you need, and you’re going to get them. Reach out to him with your burning questions via our editor, mike@davidatlanta.com. Warning: Advice given in this column is intended for entertainment and novelty purposes. Please proceed at your own risk.

ARIES (Mar. 21 – Apr. 19):

LIBRA (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22):

Stop making trouble and go to your room. It’s nobody else’s fault that you’re being cranky. The hypersensitivity will pass. In the meantime you need time alone for meditation, moderate exercise and simple housekeeping.

Discussions with your (potential) partner can help set limits and structures. It might not be easy or pleasant, but you’ll both know where you stand and where to go from there. Whether it creates freedom or security you’ll be better for it.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 – May 20):

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21):

Luck serves the well-prepared. Your lucky day isn’t happening this week, but you should be getting your share of them soon. Fun with friends can go way over the top. How much trouble do you really want to handle?

Vent about stress at work with your friends safely away from your job. Sure you have legitimate complaints to handle on site, but let off the steam and get others’ perspective so you can cool down and deal with it constructively.

GEMINI (May 21- Jun. 20):

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21):

The rush to catch up can have you tripping all over yourself. Slow and easy does it. Breathe. Meditate. No matter how badly your parents screwed you up, you’re a grown-up, have to be responsible and fix your own problems.

What looks like innocent fun can easily get you caught up in stupid arguments or other annoying details that just distract from valued work and pleasures. There may be no avoiding it, but you can easily walk away.

CANCER (Jun. 21- Jul. 22):

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19):

New friendships could last forever. Cultivate important connections you can depend on, but be certain you can be counted on, too! You need some time out to charge your batteries, but too much seclusion is an unhealthy indulgence.

Defending your turf will get more contentious than you’d expected. Set limits as diplomatically as you can, but you may have to give a little to protect a lot. Think ahead and be sure you can defend whatever lines you set.

LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22):

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18):

All eyes are turning to you. Strut your stuff; show off your best work. The flip side is that you can’t pull anything sneaky. That’s not to rule out private pleasures. Have fun, but be very careful not to slide into excess.

New ideas quickly lead to brilliant breakthroughs. Discuss anything and everything openly. Keep your BS filters up, but resist the urge to argue. Friendly advice about your partnership is worth listening to. Be polite anyway.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22):

PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 20):

Some of your darkest, naughtiest secrets are about to be revealed. You might be able to control which ones and to whom. Good luck with that! Opening the right discussion with the right person could open a lot more!

A secret just isn’t safe in your mouth. Stay focused on your own business. You could stumble onto a great deal, but is it really? Check it out as carefully as you can, but act fast or forget it. It won’t last long.

bitch session Did U get paid after taking about me, or U still broke?

Instagram gays be like ‘new project coming up.’ We get it, Darren, you’re gonna post more pics of you in underwear.

SEND US YOUR BITCHES! Text 404.969.BTCH, tweet @BitchSessionATL or email bitch@davidatlanta.com *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)

I am still broke, and you are still a bad-grammar homewrecking whore with a bent dick.

Don’t be jealous, sugar. Not everyone can look amazing with their clothes off.

I finally learned if I can’t build with them, don’t chill with them.

Chile, please. You finally figured if they won’t chill with you, you should make like it was your idea.

Girl, you’re a personality, not a performer. And even that is pushing it.

Cardboard box and rickety door knob, meet dry lumber and sawed-off stump. #nopersonality #perfectmatch

When will these drag queens learn that there’s more to it than makeup and outfits?

Sssshhhh. You're just another emotional invalid with a social media account and an opinion.
